New Bowling Alley/Restaurant/Bar Plans are Underway By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Reporter KENNEBUNK Folks will soon be tallying their strikes and spares and chowing down on tasty gastropub fare if plans for the new Garden Street bowling alley, restaurant and recreation complex continue to progress smoothly. Jake Peterson, John Nelson and Dan Hardy, partners in Garden Street Bowl, Inc., intend to purchase the building, vacant since the old Garden Street Market closed in 2010 and then renovate it into a 10-lane bowling alley and 75-seat restaurant, bar and game area. “We have signed the purchase contract and hope to complete that and do construction and renovation this winter, then

open sometime in the spring, Nelson said recently. He and his partners stood

outside the empty building that was originally built as a shoe manufacturing plant in the ‘50s.

It was a grocery store from the 1960s to 2010, when it closed after Hannaford opened its large supermarket on Rte. 1. The three have worked together for the past decade at the Village Tavern in West Kennebunk. Last Thanksgiving, they devised their plan and brought it to town officials. “A lot of people have talked about doing something with the building and we decided ‘let’s go for it.’ This is what the community wants, and we’re thankful to the town for helping us to make it happen, “said Nelson, a waiterbartender at Village Tavern. Mat Eddy, Kennebunk’s economic development director, said that he and his office have worked with the three men ever

since they presented their plan. “There have been other ideas for this building, and we’ve spent time as a staff seeking a suitable leasee or owner. But I’ve been impressed with them from the start. They are conservative, careful, thorough and move at a pace that makes sense, said Eddy. The project will be a great addition to downtown Kennebunk, Eddy added. “It will help make Kennebunk a destination and bring life to the downtown after dark and on Saturdays. It will be a nice addition to the Waterhouse Center (the two-year-old skating rink/event center located on Main Street) See BOWLING page 8...

decided to laud one of their own, applauding her good works and giving her some well-deserved recognition for her hard work and heartfelt efforts. The woman is 91-year-old Helen Stewart. In July of 2013, Helen’s son, John R. Stewart, passed away just 7 weeks after having been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Originally when Helen knitted shawls she wanted them to go to pancreatic cancer patients, like John, but that is no longer the case. Now her prayer shawls go to anyone diagnosed with cancer. According to her friends, “knitting was something that she enjoyed doing for others and it helped comfort her through her own loss. Since 2013, Helen has lovingly hand-knitted more than 40 prayer shawls to bring comfort to cancer patients. Each shawl requires roughly three skeins of homespun yarn and many compassionate hours to make. Helen buys all the yarn, knits each shawl and passes her gifts on to hospice through her friend and hairdresser, Hannah Rothermel. Helen has been a long time member of York Senior Center and has found many friends over

the years. She was the Senior Center crafter that originally started knitting squares for blankets. She knitted and brought in 10 knit squares she had made. Originally the squares were supposed to measure 7 x 9, but she’d made 9 x 9 inch squares. She said she’d tear off the two inches, but her friends said absolutely not!
