New Bowling Alley/Restaurant/Bar Plans are Underway By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Reporter KENNEBUNK Folks will soon be tallying their strikes and spares and chowing down on tasty gastropub fare if plans for the new Garden Street bowling alley, restaurant and recreation complex continue to progress smoothly. Jake Peterson, John Nelson and Dan Hardy, partners in Garden Street Bowl, Inc., intend to purchase the building, vacant since the old Garden Street Market closed in 2010 and then renovate it into a 10-lane bowling alley and 75-seat restaurant, bar and game area. “We have signed the purchase contract and hope to complete that and do construction and renovation this winter, then

open sometime in the spring, Nelson said recently. He and his partners stood

outside the empty building that was originally built as a shoe manufacturing plant in the ‘50s.

It was a grocery store from the 1960s to 2010, when it closed after Hannaford opened its large supermarket on Rte. 1. The three have worked together for the past decade at the Village Tavern in West Kennebunk. Last Thanksgiving, they devised their plan and brought it to town officials. “A lot of people have talked about doing something with the building and we decided ‘let’s go for it.’ This is what the community wants, and we’re thankful to the town for helping us to make it happen, “said Nelson, a waiterbartender at Village Tavern. Mat Eddy, Kennebunk’s economic development director, said that he and his office have worked with the three men ever

since they presented their plan. “There have been other ideas for this building, and we’ve spent time as a staff seeking a suitable leasee or owner. But I’ve been impressed with them from the start. They are conservative, careful, thorough and move at a pace that makes sense, said Eddy. The project will be a great addition to downtown Kennebunk, Eddy added. “It will help make Kennebunk a destination and bring life to the downtown after dark and on Saturdays. It will be a nice addition to the Waterhouse Center (the two-year-old skating rink/event center located on Main Street) See BOWLING page 8...

decided to laud one of their own, applauding her good works and giving her some well-deserved recognition for her hard work and heartfelt efforts. The woman is 91-year-old Helen Stewart. In July of 2013, Helen’s son, John R. Stewart, passed away just 7 weeks after having been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Originally when Helen knitted shawls she wanted them to go to pancreatic cancer patients, like John, but that is no longer the case. Now her prayer shawls go to anyone diagnosed with cancer. According to her friends, “knitting was something that she enjoyed doing for others and it helped comfort her through her own loss. Since 2013, Helen has lovingly hand-knitted more than 40 prayer shawls to bring comfort to cancer patients. Each shawl requires roughly three skeins of homespun yarn and many compassionate hours to make. Helen buys all the yarn, knits each shawl and passes her gifts on to hospice through her friend and hairdresser, Hannah Rothermel. Helen has been a long time member of York Senior Center and has found many friends over

the years. She was the Senior Center crafter that originally started knitting squares for blankets. She knitted and brought in 10 knit squares she had made. Originally the squares were supposed to measure 7 x 9, but she’d made 9 x 9 inch squares. She said she’d tear off the two inches, but her friends said absolutely not! The 9 x 9 See SHAWLS page 2...

Traip Student Receives National Merit Commendation KITTERY Eric Waddell, principal of R. W. Traip Academy in Kittery, has announced that Sarah Montembeau has been named a 'Commended Student in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.' A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented to Sarah at the school’s Senior Assembly in June. Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2017

competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. urday, Oct. 29, 10 a.m. - 12 noon, explore the dramatic ledges and varied terrain of Kenyon Hill Preserve, off Ogunquit Road in South Berwick, including the wetland headwaters of the Ogunquit River. Joe Hardy of Wells, author of Settlement & Abandonment on Tatnic Hill is returning this year to lead the popular Tatnic Hill History Hike on Saturday, Oct. 22, 10 a.m. - 12 noon. The next day, Sunday, Oct. 23, follow another historic road, Old Punkintown Road in South Berwick and Eliot. This hike, led by member Jack Kareckas and forester Steve Bodkin, will visit York Pond and Bartlett Mill Pond, beginning with a look at the results of a selective timber harvest a few years back on Great Works’ 100acre Rocky Hills parcel. This is one of well over a dozen activities in western York County included in Forest Works!’ Take to the Woods October program

(www.forestworksme.org). Forest Works! is a regional conservation partnership to promote sustainable forestry and to connect communities to the woods. Fall color will be in force for the two “Wandering Wednesday 3-5 pm walks: Brooks Farm Wildlife Preserve in Berwick on October 12 and the October 26 hike to LaChance Point and the beaver wetlands at Orris Falls Conservation Area in South Berwick. Come and observe the changes as a result of the “beaver deceiver installed this summer to relieve rising water levels. Space on hikes is limited to 20 people so reservations are required. Call the Great Works office at 207-646-3604 or email info@gwrlt.org to reserve your place. All hikes are open to the public and free of charge to Land Trust members. A $5 donation per person or $10 donation per family is suggested for non-members. FMI: www.gwrlt.org.

and social justice organizations across our country, and he’s the author or photographer of seven books about people’s relationship to place. You can learn more at Peterforbes.org. The event is free and open

or duck pins. Plans also include a separate game room with games like indoor bocce ball and table shuffle board. Peterson, the Village Tavern sous chef and kitchen manager, is devising the menu. “My menu

isn’t set in stone, said Peterson. “But it will be upscale gastro-pub food with nice sandwiches, tastings and shared plates to complement our craft beers. “We’ll have 22 taps, added Hardy, a bartender at Village Tavern. “What they are planning provides a different type of eatery and gives people a choice of restaurants without competing with Duffy’s, 50 Local and the Kennebunk Inn, said Eddy. Their plans are progressing through the town’s planning review process, and Peterson, Hardy and Nelson have worked with Saco-Biddeford Development Corp. and Kennebunk Savings Bank for financing commitments. Now, as their plans fall in to place, they look forward to providing people with a new venue to hang out and have a good time. “It’s for the locals — we hope they will look at it as the ultimate hangout and a great place for them and their families to come and have fun, said Nelson.

~ News ~ The Central School Hoophouse Gets an Update ELIOT Jeff Hoerth is a community volunteers who made Eliot's Central School Outdoor Classroom and Hoophouse an amazing success. The Hoophouse is a greenhouse that is planted with edible plants, then grown, harvested, cooked and eaten by students, volunteers and invited guests. A The Hoophouse is part of the Outdoor Classroom Program at Central School. The purpose of the outdoor classroom is to connect every child with nature's lesson for their health, social and academic growth. Studies have shown that children playing in

diverse natural school grounds are more physically active, more civil to one another, more creative and more aware of their own health. Recently, Jeff and a team of volunteers, Gregg Harrington, Tom Hoerth and Jennifer Hoerth, put in a full weekend taking down the old, tattered hoop house skin staple by staple and rebuilding it with new vents and boards along the ends to help with future repairs and weed whacking. If anyone is interested in becoming involved with the outdoor classroom, please let the Central School office know

by calling 207-384-2333. They are always in search of volunteers for their cooking program, extra hands on community work days and scientists/naturalists/ master gardeners/amateur gardeners who are passionate about the outdoors and children in nature!

Citizens’ Guide to Ocean and Coastal Law SEACOAST Accessing Maine’s coastal areas, including its beautiful sandy beaches, can pose a challenge because the public owns just 12 percent of the state’s 5,400 miles of shoreline. Access to the remainder of the Maine coast varies from place to place, but in most areas the rights of private property owners extend to the low-tide mark. This sometimes causes conflict and has occasionally led to legal action. The free guide, “Public Shoreline Access in Maine: A Citizen’s Guide to Ocean and Coastal Law brings clarity to coastal access issues and offers guidance to citizens wishing to resolve conflicts. First of a Series, held Tuesday, October 4 at 6 p.m. This will be a low key relaxing night where you might be convinced to enter a new exciting mysterious world of the mind of a mystery writer that was previously unknown to you. Or you may discover a kindred spirit who lives down the street from you--someone you can share your love of the same mystery books that you have been reading for years. The format is for each person to talk about a mystery book and/or the author for five or six minutes and then leave a few minutes for discussion. Reading might be a solitary experience, but the love of reading creates community.

The Center for Wildlife will be at the library on Saturday, October 8, at 1 p.m. to provide an in-depth introduction to the unique differences between raptors, reptiles, and mammals. Focusing on animals that live in Maine, the program will include live animals and interactive displays. This family program is free and open to the public.

The library will feature five of Lehoux’s Giclee prints, all depicting images of Maine. Lehoux's passion is Giclee art. Giclee is a type of inkjet print that is produced on a large format printer with eight different colors and tiny nozzles that spray the ink on a high quality archival paper. Her work typically includes anywhere from 200-250 layers of flat shapes of color that are built one on top of the other to create a larger object within the piece. The process is akin/similar to drawing shapes on several pieces of glass, then stacking that glass so all the shapes appear as one image when looking at it from above. Free and open to the public.

South Berwick Public Library In Memory of Rebecca Woodman The Friends of the library have been the recipients of over $2,500 given in memory of Rebecca Woodman (you may know her by Becky Wieder). Her husband Phil designated that donations be made in her memory to a fund that will be used to purchase children’s picture books and services. She worked for many years in local schools and was clearly beloved by many people in our community. The fruits of these gifts have transformed our library’s picture book collection! The area for inspiring young readers and reader to be is fresh, colorful, and within reach. Becky touched many lives in the community and it is deeply satisfying to see these books come and go in her name.

All About Elvis: An Original Short Film & Live Concert ARUNDEL Renowned folk-rock artist Rex Fowler presents “All About Elvis, an original short film and live concert featuring Rex and the Rockabilly Kings on Saturday, Oct. 1, 8 p.m. at Vinegar Hill Music Theatre, 53 Old Post Road in Arundel. Rex Fowler, co-founder of Aztec Two-Step, has an exciting new show that pays homage to the legacy of Elvis Aaron Presley. The evening begins with a screening of “200 Cadillacs, the original 48-minute documentary film conceived and coproduced by Fowler, showcasing Elvis' often forgotten generosity. A Q&A session will follow the film, after which Rex and the Rockabilly Kings will take the stage to perform authentic renditions of the classic songs from Presley's early years on Sun and RCA Records, covering his startling pioneering era from 1954

into the early '60s. Elvis’ musical contribution, cultural impact, and artistic achievement made him an unsurpassed 20th century icon. Drawing from his country roots and the African/American traditions of gospel and Rhythm & Blues that were nurtured in the fertile soil of the Mississippi Delta, Elvis intuitively created a revolutionary groundbreaking sound that had never been imagined before, inspiring artists such as John Lennon and Keith Richards to form their own bands, and changing popular music forever. BUSINESS & FINANCE

Get Your Home $67,184 Awarded to Support AP Ready for Winter Testing for Low-Income Students STATEWIDE Summer is over and it won’t be long before the leaves begin to fall. Now is the time to get your home and yard prepared for the cold. Though there are many reliable businesses that provide these services, there are also a few that have no plans to actually do the work. Better Business Bureau serving E. MA, ME, RI & VT (BBB) is reminding consumers of the steps to take to ensure your property is taken care of this fall. Everyone knows it's important to have your chimney serviced and yard debris cleaned up before winter begins. Remember that flyer in your mailbox last week from a local chimney sweep or tree trimmer offering a “oneof-a-kind deal? Homeowner beware! Rather than choosing the first business who pitches you, it's important to do your research before you let them work on your property. “BBB urges consumers to take the same amount of care finding a business to perform work outside their homes as they do for inside, said Paula Fleming, spokesperson for the local BBB. “It’s easy to hire a business on the spot, but it’s important to do your research and find out who you’re letting on your property. When looking for yard and maintenance services, keep these tips in mind: Hire a professional. Research businesses to find reliable businesses. Make sure you know who you’re dealing with and how to reach them if problems arise. Be sure to ask for references. Be wary of door-to-door solicitations. Every year, countless homeowners have tree trimmers or chimney sweepers knock on their door and offer to provide their services at a discount. In too many cases, the work performed is shoddy or only partially completed while paid in full – and the company fails to return, as promised – forcing property owners to hire a reliable business to do the job right. Request an on-site inspection. The inspection should include all landscaping, all parts of the chimney, or any other areas that need preparation for the fall. Estimates should be given only after an onsite inspection. Businesses that give an estimate without a visual inspection cannot be sure of the scope of the work involved and consumers run

the risk of paying more than they were quoted. Estimates should include all labor, cleanup and disposal charges. Get everything in writing. A contract should clearly state the services you will receive, as well as when the job is expected to be completed, payment terms and conditions, contact information for the business – phone number and address – as well as any refund or cancellation policies. Verify insurance coverage. Tree care can be dangerous if not done by properly trained experts. Confirm that the business has insurance that covers worker’s compensation, property damage and personal liability in case of accidents. Also be sure that the chimney sweeper you hire has the necessary insurance to protect you and your home in the event of damage or injury. Remember, you’re the customer; it’s your home. Never feel pressured to give anyone your

STATEWIDE The Maine Department of Education has been awarded $67,184 from the U.S. Department of Education through the Advanced Placement Test Fee Program. The award will be used to partially subsidize the cost of Advanced Placement (AP) tests for low-income high school students. “A quality education is fundamental to ensuring that students have the opportunity to achieve their goals, said U.S.Senators Susan Collins and Angus King in a joint statement. “Advanced Placement exams allow students to demonstrate what they have learned in academically rigorous AP classes, and students who score success-

fully can receive college credit, potentially saving them on college tuition. We are pleased that this investment will help more Maine students achieve a bright future. The grant to the Maine Department of Education will significantly reduce the cost of more than 1,700 AP exams for eligible

low-income high school students across Maine. The Advanced Placement Test Fee Program awards grants annually to eligible state educational agencies. The program is designed to increase the number of lowincome students who can take AP exams for which college academic credit may be awarded.

BUSINESS & FINANCE It’s Outcome, Not Income – In Retirement Planning

Most Americans are pessimistic about how well off they’ll be financially when they reach retirement. “People have a lot of worries and that’s understandable,” says Dan Carter, an Invest-

ment Advisor Representative for Safeguard Investment Advisory Group. “Their savings may not be what they hoped for. Pensions for most people are a thing of the past. And many are uneasy about the future of Social Security.”

A Gallup poll this year showed that just 48 percent of Americans expect they will have enough money in retirement. Those in their 50s were the least optimistic, with 42 percent in that age group saying they expect to

live comfortably in retirement. Financial advisors might be able to get those Gallup numbers moving in a more optimistic direction if they didn’t focus so much on “income,” and paid more attention to “outcome,” Carter says. “Certainly, income is a top concern for retirees,” Carter says. “But not all income is equal. For example, how much of your retirement income is taxable? Does the total look great at first, but look a little less great once Uncle Sam’s share is subtracted?” To improve the odds of a better outcome, Carter says some issues people planning for retirement should focus on include: • Longevity. People are living longer, but many advisors don’t recognize longevity as a risk, he says. “Most plans that I see out there will run out when people are in their early 80s,” Carter says. “And most people will say that’s no big deal because they don’t believe they’ll live longer than that. But they could be in for a surprise.” As an example, take a married couple who are both 65. There’s a 63 percent chance at least one of them will live into their 90s. Retirees who want to eliminate longevity risk should consider implementing a hybrid technique which will create lifetime income that will never run out. • Taxes on Social Security. Many people planning for retirement may not realize that Social Security counts toward their

taxable income. If their income exceeds a certain level, they will be taxed. Staying below those income levels could be one option, but most people might not be able to live on such limited income. When planning retirement expenses, be sure to take taxes into account, and discuss with a financial advisor what your options might be for avoiding or at least limiting those taxes, Carter says. • Consider working longer. One way to improve your income situation in retirement is to continue working, either full or part-time. That’s not possible for everyone because of health or other concerns. But for some people this can be a solution that allows you to both save more and postpone spending your savings. “It’s important that people sit down with a financial advisor who can take all these issues into consideration,” Carter says. “You want to make sure that your ‘income’ results in a positive ‘outcome.’” Dan Carter, an Investment Advisor Representative for Safeguard Investment Advisory Group (www.safeguardinvestment.com), has 18 years experience in the insurance and estate planning industry. Carter also is the radio host for a financial radio program, “The Big Picture Radio Show,” on KVTA 1590, Ventura County’s Gold Coast “News Talk” station.

Drivers Waste $2.1 Billion Annually on Premium Gas According to new AAA research, American drivers wasted more than $2.1 billion dollars in the last year by using premium-grade gasoline in vehicles designed to run on regular fuel. With 16.5 million U.S. drivers having used premium fuel despite the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation in the last 12 months, AAA conducted a comprehensive fuel evaluation to determine what, if any, benefit the practice offers to consumers. After using industry-standard test protocols designed to evaluate vehicle performance, fuel economy and emissions, AAA found no benefit to using premium gasoline in a vehicle that only requires regular-grade fuel. In partnership with the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Automotive Research Center, AAA tested 87-octane (regular) and 93octane (premium) gasoline in vehicles equipped with a V-8, V-6 or I4 engine designed to operate on regular-grade fuel. To evaluate the effects of using a higher-octane fuel when it’s not required by the manufacturer, each vehicle was tested on a dynamometer, which is essentially a treadmill for cars that is designed to measure horsepower, fuel economy and tailpipe emissions when using both fuel types and variety of driving conditions. The laboratory testing found no significant increases in any tested category, indicating the practice of using premium gaso-

line when it’s not required for the vehicle offers no advantage. Tests reveal that there is no benefit to using premium gasoline in a vehicle that requires regular fuel, said John Nielsen, AAA’s managing director of Automotive Engineering and Repair. “Premium gasoline is specifically formulated to be compatible with specific types of engine designs and most vehicles cannot take advantage of the higher octane rating. “Using premium fuel in a vehicle designed for regular is like throwing dollars out the window while you are driving, he added. To understand the magnitude of the issue, AAA surveyed U.S. drivers to understand what type of fuel their vehicles require and the frequency at which they upgrade to premium fuel. Results reveal: Seventy percent of U.S. drivers currently own a vehicle that requires regular gasoline, while 16 percent drive vehicles that require premium fuel. The remaining 14 percent own a vehicle that requires mid-grade gasoline (10 percent) or uses an alternative energy source (4 percent). In the last 12 months, 16.5 million U.S. drivers unnecessarily used premium-grade gasoline in their vehicle at least once. On average, those that upgraded to premium gasoline did so at least once per month. In the last 12 months, U.S. drivers unnecessarily used premium gasoline in their vehicle more than 270 million times.

“When it comes to gasoline, ‘premium’ does not mean ‘better’ if your vehicle doesn’t require it,â€? continued Nielsen. “Drivers looking to upgrade to a higher quality fuel for their vehicle should save their money and select a TOP TIER™ gasoline, not a higher-octane one.â€? Drivers are urged to use the appropriate gasoline as determined by their car’s manufacturer (regular or premium) that meets TOP TIER standards for engine cleanliness and performance. To calculate the total annual cost of using premium

gasoline when not required by the vehicle manufacturer, AAA conducted a comprehensive analysis that included a U.S. consumer survey, Federal Highway Administration data, per-gallon costs of premium gasoline and regular gasoline and the average number of fillups annually. All testing was conducted at the Automotive Club of Southern California’s Automotive Research Center in Los Angeles, California, using an industry-standard chassis dynamometer, emissions test equipment and Environmental Protection Agency

driving cycles. All gasoline used for testing was EPA Tier III certification fuel with ten percent ethanol content in both regular and premium grades. Certified test fuel was used to remove variability in fuel quality and additives. For this study, AAA did not evaluate the effects of using regular fuel in an engine that requires premium gasoline. For additional information about premium fuel, including the full test report and fact sheet, visit NewsRoom.AAA.com.

Health & Fitness York Hospital Golf & Gala Raises $60,000 YORK It’s true Hollywood has its Emmy’s and Oscars, but if your cause is the ‘art’ of healthy aging, then last weekend, York, Maine was ‘the place’ to show your support and have a lot of fun while doing so! To celebrate the newly created, Hancock Family Fund for Healthy Aging, York Hospital and The Hancock Family hosted a two-day event-filledweekend, beginning with a Gala on Saturday evening at The York Harbor Inn and followed by their 28th Annual Frank E. Hancock Memorial Golf Tournament at The York Golf & Tennis Club. The fund itself was created to honor the lives of Cape Neddick residents Frank and Kay Hancock who embodied the classic art of enjoying life while aging with grace and humor. A former Attorney General of Maine, and Hospital Board Chair, Frank was a powerful, yet diplomatic intellect who easily blended commitment to his community and family. Kay, always strong, caring, a Hospital Trustee and chair of many committees— maintained her wit and mental edge until the age of 91. Their children, Cal, Josh and Emi continue their parent’s commitment to York Hospital as they helped to create these events from their respective homes across the United States. The fund that bears their family name will help support Transportation, Strength and Balance, and Home Delivery Meal Programs and other services. The more than 100 guests at the Gala were inspired by the words of Dr. Lisa Belisle, wellness editor for Maine Magazine and host of Love Maine Radio; and Senior Health experts Barbara Roberge, PhD NP Nurse Practitioner and Ardeshir Hashmi, MD of Massachusetts General Hospital – Geriatric Medicine. The evening was filled with laughter, co-hosted by Hospital President Jud Knox and Josh Hancock, consisting of video tributes to the Hospital from friends as far as Hollywood including Jonathan Goldsmith (“The Most Interesting Man in the World, Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad’s Marie Schrader, now in CBS’s Life in Pieces) and Al Ford Uzielli (Ford Motor Co. executive and restaurateur)! The appetizers were provided by Hancock Gourmet Lobster Company owner, Cal Hancock. Auctions

and effective fundraising ran rampant during exciting bidding for a signed bottle of wine from Francis Ford Coppola, a friend of Josh Hancock. The evening came to a close with a door prize for a trip to Paris. The Frank E. Hancock Memorial Golf Tournament, held the last Sunday of September, the York Golf & Tennis Club, was enjoyed by over 125 golfers. “Although each year since Frank’s passing, the tournament has benefited a different York Hospital program, we think it’s exciting‌ and that both he and Kay would be thrilled to know the proceeds are benefiting a fund in their honor, with programs designed to help our community live out their lives happily in a myriad of ways. Ways that work for them in body, mind and spirit,â€? offered Hospital President Jud Knox. Tournament Champions Dave Fletcher, Rob Hannigan, Mike Jacobs and Rick MacFarland were cheered as they accepted honors and awards for having the low score of 61. Closest to the Pin honors went to Chad Pierce for the Men and Kim Vieira for the Women, while Longest Drive Honors went to Christine Sieks and David Fletcher. When the sun went down on the York River on Sunday evening, almost $60,000 was raised for The Hancock Family Fund for Healthy Aging. Josh Hancock summed it up, “York Hospital continues to innovate in both health care and fund raising! My parents would be delighted at such a successful outcome in terms of both finances and fun.â€? ADD/ADHD is Not Just a Childhood Disorder Add/ADHD can and most likely will persist into adulthood and many adults do not know they have it and by the time they do find out, if ever, much fallout has most likely happened in their lives. ADD/ADHD begins in

childhood and has many symptoms that can be misunderstood for other conditions, a 'bad attitude' or a childhood behavioral problem. ADD/ADHD is not a behavioral issue, it is neurological and can be misunderstood as a behavioral issue by those who do not

Statistics vary, but nearly 10 percent of the population has this disorder and at any given time as many as 1 in 4 families are dealing with a mental health condition and ADD/ADHD may be one of those conditions. It is not just the hyper active boy in class who cannot sit still and gets in trouble regularly for outbursts, excessive talking, fooling around, and of course not doing his homework! ADD/ ADHD manifests itself with many different symptoms and most likely includes an executive function disorder. If left undiagnosed and untreated it can have severe consequences down the road including depression and bi-polar disorder, substance abuse through self-medicating, and even suicidal ideation, psychosis, and trouble

ADD/ADHD can manifest itself as oppositional defiance disorder and various statistics reveal that anywhere from 20-75 percent of the prison population has ADD/ADHD. The mean may be perhaps in the 30-40 percent range. This is staggering. Imagine if this neurological condition was caught and treated early. Think of the number of lives spared? Become informed, ADD/ADHD is not just a childhood condition, nor is it a condition of which to just joke about the wired up child. It can greatly impair, spin a child or adult out of control into an utter hopeless depression and send par-

ents into a whirlwind. However these people are also very gifted, willing to please, and themselves don't understand why they're "different" or don't understand what's "wrong with me", they just need to have their condition understood in the home, school, office and even by medical professionals who are not up to speed on advancements in neurological technology for the ADD/ADHD brain. Overprescribing of opioids has fueled the number of overdose deaths in Maine. In 2014, 350,000 Mainers were prescribed a total of 80 million opioid painkillers – almost one quarter of the population. The Chapter 488 legislation addresses overprescribing by putting dosage restrictions on new prescriptions, requiring physicians to check the Prescription

Drug Monitoring Program before prescribing opioids, limiting the duration of opioid treatment for both chronic and acute pain[i] and requiring continuing education for opioid prescribers. The National Safety Council, a leader in opioid safety education and advocacy, identified six key indicators that will have immediate and sustained impact

if states implement them. The Council performed an exhaustive evaluation of the data and research into effective prevention strategies, ranking all 50 states based on their efforts in those six areas. Twenty-eight states were given a “failing rating, and no state met all six indicators. Submitted by State Representative Beth Collins.

~ Obituaries & News ~

Edward Henry Danis, 90 WELLS – Edward Henry Danis (Ted) 90, of Wells, died peacefully at home Wednesday, September 22, 2016 with his loving family surrounding him. He was born in Saco, October 17, 1925, a son of Joseph Danis and Georgianna (Courriveau) Danis. Ted was also a retired navy sailor who over the years shared many amazing and courageous adventures with his children. He retired from the Portsmouth Navy Yard as an electrician inspector on submarines in 1986. He married the girl, the first time he laid eyes on her, he told his friend, one day I’m going to marry her! And in June 1949 he married Patricia Mae (Moulen) Danis. Together they shared 36 years of marriage until her passing. Ted was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved the outdoors. Every November he took two weeks to go hunting up north on the Maine/Canadian border with his buddies. Year after year, new hunters formed the group, and we still hear amazing stories of the ‘one that didn’t get away fromTed’. He enjoyed his solstice being on the ocean in his lobster boat. Weekends were always a ‘steamed clam or lobster event’. And what a huge Red Sox fan he was! Ted’s inquisitive mind

and intellect, coupled with his can-do attitude is what taught his children about life and success. He was a self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit that rarely rested. He had an unforgettable personality. His quick wit entertained all that were fortunate enough to meet him and enjoy his company. Surviving are his brother, Robert Danis of Saco, sisters Laurette Whitehurst of East Waterboro and Port St. Lucie, FL, and Constance Vadnais of Saco; sons David Danis of Shapleigh and Thomas Danis of Wells; daughters Doreen Lerner of Miami, FL, and Rebecca Danis of Pembroke Pines, FL; grandchildren Ashley Danis of North Conway, NH, Cole Danis of Alfred, and Bret DesJardins of Waterboro; along with several nieces and nephews, brothers in law and sisters in law, and daughters in law. He is predeceased by his wife Patricia in 1987, and his son Michael in 2012. Visiting hours were on Tuesday, September 27, at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells. Family and friends gathered to share remembrances of Ted’s amazing life. Should friends choose, memorial donations in his name are encouraged to a Vet-

Glenn served as an Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister at Corpus Christi Parish in Portsmouth, NH. He loved spending summers at his cottage in Nova Scotia. and looking out at their parents and grandparents, brothers and sisters, and the rest of their family and friends. Executive Director Neal Meltzer had the honor of welcoming attendees and congratulating the Class of 2016 on their hard work and numerous achievements. He then passed the microphone off to the Cen-

This is the third edition of the publication and the first update in more than a decade. “Public Shoreline Access

SANFORD On August 17, twenty little graduates celebrated the successful completion of their programs at the Fraser-Ford Child Development Center surrounded by parents, teachers and staff. These graduates have been working and playing, learning ...GUIDE from page 9 standing and appreciation of the legal issues that surround public access and private ownership of coastal lands, Dest said. The publication follows a series of five workshops Dest coordinated over the past two years focused on the question, “Who owns the beach? The citizen’s guide describes Maine law and prominent court cases related to public use and access to the coast. It

ter’s veteran teacher, Brianne Westman. She proudly shared memories and accomplishments of her students’ journeys. Each of her fellow teachers was in turn able to impart stories and words of encouragement with their own graduates and the audience before handing out the well-deserved diplomas and gift bags. Westman, Erica Johnson, Amy Knapp, Kiley Monsalvez, Erica Beal, Jo-Ann Estrella, and every member of the staff mentioned the same bittersweet feelings as they watched their students, knowing that they had to say goodbye. The center addresses the needs of preschool children with autism, intellectual and developmental disabilities, severe medical issues, Down Syndrome, and other developmental delays with the goal of transitioning to public school systems.

Parent Christa Silva expressed her thanks and congratulations, "When our Jackson first started at Waban he made minimal to no eye contact, he would not respond to his name, wouldn't dream of wearing a backpack and was making no attempt at mimicking words. Jackson now enjoys spelling his name with blocks and playing with numbers. He will try very hard to mimic sounds and has started to make his needs known with a special communication device. To say we will miss Waban is an understatement, but the skills we are taking away from our time here will never be measured. You increased my son’s quality of life in just a few years, and for a Mother there is no greater gift you could give me than that. Good job Jackson! Couldn't be more proud of you!" WEST KENNEBUNK AWS Receives $1,100 from SIS Animal Welfare Society was the proud recipients of SIS Bank’s Homeruns for Good program for August. The Red Sox hit a whopping 22 homers at Fenway Park during the month, yielding a very generous donation of $1,100 for our animals. We are so grateful to SIS for their continued support of AWS and the work we do in the community helping animals in need. For more information: www. animalwelfaresociety.org; or call 207-985-3244 x 128. NORTH BERWICK Meet Ellie:, who was born to a stray six-month-old kitten that came into ACAR from local town in York County. Mom has been spayed, vaccinated and has moved to her new home. Ellie and all her littermate, Crescent, are black tigers, with excellent personality traits, very social and will do well with children, all adults, non aggressive house cats and gentle dogs. Both girls are looking specifically for a family or a single person who will be able and willing to provide an indoor only life style so each will live a long safe life style. Ellie and Crescent would like to be placed together so each would have a buddy for playtime and company for sleep time. Meet Ellie and Crescent at the Sanford adoption center located at 251 Country Club Road (Route 4) in Sanford. ACAR will be holding an adoption event at the Pet Life Store in the Shaw's

Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Mission Maine Update Our photo this week is of a feral momma kitty named Sadie with four of her young kittens. She came from Northern Maine with 6 kittens but sadly, due to illness, two died. Her 4 remaining kittens are healthy and we are all hopeful there will be no other issues with her litter. She's enjoying the comforts and great care from her foster mom Debbie. When we watch how they react to a cat toy it simply tickles our hearts. Never seeing a toy before, the kitty is uncertain of what it is and will hesitantly touch it. When the toy jingles and rolls the kitty forgets it's shyness and weariness and within seconds the kitty is happy and romping and joyful. We need more fosters for more of the kitties so if you want to be a part of our Mission Maine Rescue work call Joyce at 207229-8314. Help Needed! We are in great need for you to financially support our work. All the blankets we are using need to be washed. This means we need more help doing laundry at the center, along with more laundry detergent. We clean their cages and turn around and they have spilled their food and water once again, and somehow their

blanket seems to land in the litter box more often than not, and we have to scrub and redo their condo. This means more paper bowls, more Clorox wipes, more paper towels and even more help with laundry. Looking at the faces of these darling kitties has been a most rewarding experience despite the challenges! We hope you will donate lovely, useful, seasonal items to our thrift shop to bring in more funds. We are in need of litter, canned cat food (Friskees poultry flavor is best), dry Purina One cat food, Purina Kitten Chow, laundry detergent, Mr. Clean, trash bags, latex gloves, and small paper bowls, as well. No Kill! We have always been “No Kill from the very start and we want every cat to have an opportunity for a happy, healthy life. Since we are in Wells, it makes sense to serve our state first and that's why we reached out to Northern Maine who is overburdened with so many kitties and so little money and facilities to save them.

mall in Sanford this Saturday October 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cat Food Needed! ACAR is spending a fortune on canned cat/kitten food, dry kitten/cat food and litter just to meet our day to day basic needs. We are looking to the public to help us by dropping off any of these very basic items so we may continue to meet our mission. We have drop sites at our adoption center in Sanford, and our thrift store located in North Berwick. Any and all donations will be most gratefully appreciated. Volunteers Needed! The thrift Store is in need of volunteers. Please call Debby at 207-676-9330 if interested. One hundred percent of the profits benefit the animals in our care. Donations of items are always welcomed.

Pet Etiquette for Hotel Stays With the summer travel season in full swing, many families are planning their travels... and bringing along their pets to stay with them at pet friendly hotels. Be sure to plan ahead and take all the necessary precautions to ensure that your pets' travels during the summer are happy and safe ones. For many, summer travel means staying at a pet friendly hotel. It's important to make sure that you and your pet are prepared. Following some simple tips will help to ensure that your hotel stay with your pet is an enjoyable one. It's recommended to book a room on the ground floor and by an exit. This will make it much easier for you to take your pet out for bathroom breaks. Make sure to always clean up after your pet. A good rule of thumb is to bring along your own poop bags so you will always be prepared. Be sure to exercise your pet...this means walks. Ask hotel personnel about the best

places to walk your pet. Treat the hotel room with respect...this means covering any furniture and beds that your pet may be allowed on. If traveling with a cat, place their litter boxes in the bathroom. This will make clean-up much easier. It's recommended that you not leave your pet unattended in your hotel room. Even the best behaved pets can bark and become destructive when in new surroundings. If you must leave your pet alone, be sure that it's for a very short time. Alert the front desk that your pet is alone in the room and try putting on the TV or a radio to make your pet more comfortable. If your pet travels with a crate or kennel, place them in it when leaving the room. In addition, place a note on the hotel door indicating that your pet is in the room. Don't leave any pests behind. Before leaving home be sure to give your pet a good cleaning and de-flea & de-tick

them. This means a good flea and tick bath along with utilizing preventative flea and tick control. Leaving behind a stinky smell,or worse, fleas or ticks is the kind of thing that makes pet friendly accommodations change their pet friendly policies. In addition, if a deposit is required, these types of things could very well prevent you from getting it back. Accidents happen! Even pets that have never had an "accident" indoors may do so under stress. Bring along a disinfectant as well as a rag in the event that you have to clean up after your pet. Not doing so could also cause a loss of deposit. To ensure that you're welcomed back, keep your pet on a leash and avoid taking them into dining rooms and other restricted areas. Following some common sense rules this summer will help ensure that you and your pet have a happy and safe trip. TripsWithPets.com is an online pet friendly travel guide.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I have a desktop computer with Windows 10. I am trying to set up a program that needs me to enter the IP address. How do I find the IP address of my computer? Thank you, Traci Dear Traci, Every computer that is connected to a network, or the internet needs an IP address. Fortunately, there are a couple of ways to find it in Windows 10. Lets start by looking in the Control Panel. 1. Right click on the "Start" icon (the white flag) and click on "Control Panel" in the context menu that appears. 2. In the Control Panel, click on "Network and Internet". (If you don't see "Network and Internet" click next to "View by:" and select "Category". 3. Click on "Network and Sharing Center" 4. In the Network and sharing center, you will see your active networks (usually only 1) Find the section with Access type, homegroup and connections. Click on the blue word to the right of "Connections: and a status box will open. 5. Click on the "Details" button in that status box and another box will open. Your IP address will be in that list. Next, we will look in the Windows 10 "settings" app to find the IP address. This might be a little easier to find than the Control Panel. 1. Click on the start icon, then click the settings icon (it looks like a little gear) in the lower-left corner of the menu. (or use the keyboard to press the windows logo key and the letter, I at the same time) 2. In the Settings app, click on "Network and Internet". 3. Click on your connection type in the left column, usually either Ethernet or Wi-Fi. 4. Click on the connection at the top of the right column and your IP address will be displayed. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, I am using Windows backup to keep my files backed up. I have found where my pictures, documents and favorites are stored, but I am not sure where the emails and contacts are kept. I am using Thunderbird, and when I asked at the store, the tech told me that Thunderbird messages can't be backed up or transferred. If this is true, I need to find a new email program, I need my messages and contacts. Thank you, Debbie Dear Debbie, Not only is it possible to backup and/or transfer your thunderbird files, it is easier than most email programs. Thunderbird saves your personal information like messages and contacts in a set of files and folders called a "Profile". All you have to do is find and backup and/ or copy the profile folders and you will be backed up. Thunderbird can actually show you where your profile folders are located. Here is how to get that information: 1. Open Thunderbird. 2. Click on the menu icon (3 horizontal lines in the upperright corner) point to "Help" and click on "Troubleshooting Information." 3. In the, "Application Basics" section, find the "Profile Folder" section and click on the "Show Folder" button. 4. This will open the folder containing all your files, and the location of that folder will be displayed

in the address bar. If you want to make the backup simple, just backup the entire folder named, Users on your C: drive and you will have all the files you need. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Recently, I purchased a very much needed new computer. So far, so good. It runs on Windows 10, and I think that it will serve me well (old as I am!) I would like to download Outlook Express on it, however. I know that Microsoft no longer supports that program and that's fine with me. I like it and it's comfortable for me. Seems that others have pirated the rights to it and a 'donation' is required to partake! Is there any way around that for this old lady who doesn't tolerate change all that well? Many thanks, Jane Dear Jane, There is no legitimate or pirated (which means stolen) copy of Outlook Express available for you to download and install, and if anyone is telling you that they have a copy of Microsoft's Outlook Express that they are willing to share with you for a donation, they are not being truthful with you. I did a little searching online and found, what I think you are referring to. I'm pretty sure this program is made to look like Outlook Express, but it is not the real thing. The problem that I have with this is that they are trying to pass it off as

the real thing. Instead, I would suggest that you try out Mozilla Thunderbird at: www.mozilla. org/en-US/thunderbird/download. Thunderbird is free, open source software. That means that it will always be free, and will be around for a long time, instead of suddenly discontinued at the whim of a big software company. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am wondering, how do you make a backup copy of your computer? What about creating a start-up disc? They are two different things I believe. I have a new computer and I have no idea how to do either of these things. Thank you! Deenie Dear Deenie, There are several ways to go about creating a backup for your entire computer. Most computers these days come with software installed that will allow you to create recovery disks for your computer. How you access that software and how you use it is different for each computer manufacturer, so I can't give you step by step instructions. There are two disadvantages to this type of backup. First, you can only create this set of recovery disks once. The software is made this way and if you try to run it again it will only give you a message saying that you have already cre-

ated the disks. The second disadvantage is that the recovery disks only return the computer to the way it was when it shipped from the factory. That means you will have to set the computer back up with your programs, data and personal information. A better backup might be a full system backup using a program like Acronis True Image. Using Acronis, you can create a complete image of your computer after setting it up so that you can restore it without having to also re-install all your software and printer drivers. Acronis will also help you create a startup disk to use in the event your computer can't boot from the hard drive. You can then use Acronis to backup your files like documents and pictures on a regular basis. Acronis True Image also has a 159 page user manual that you can download from their site, so you will have detailed directions on how to create your backups. You can safely purchase and download True Image here: http://goo.gl/ IjpxF9. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. Girls' Varsity Soccer Wednesday, Sep. 21 Berwick 1, Southfield 4 The Bulldogs suffered their first loss of the season on the road at Southfield by a score of 4-1. Southfi eld struck fi rst taking an early 1-0 lead over the Bulldogs, but

~ Sports ~ Berwick bounced back with the equalizer in the 16th minute when Aaliyah Farid (Hampton, NH) and Kenza Farid (Hampton, NH) found Vanessa Leavitt (Haverhill, MA) who put a rebound into the back of the net off a corner kick. The Bulldogs struggled with clearances and unfortunately Southfield found the back of the net two more times in the first half. Annie Vatcher (Kennebunk) had a really good chance from the left side taking it end line and beating three Southfield players for a shot that went just wide in the 32nd minute. The Bulldogs came out strong in the second half, but unfortunately Southfield found the back of the net a 4th time. Rayne Zimmermann (Exeter, NH) had some good chances in the first and second half and did a great job to anchor the Berwick defense at the end of the second half. The Bulldogs never quit and had some quality play in the second half. Unfortunately we could not capitalize. Aaliyah Farid (Hampton, NH) played well and some great combination plays with Kenza down the right flank. In the 69th minute Tess Varley (Portsmouth, NH) played a great ball into the box that went just over the bar. Tess had a strong defensive play shortly their after clearing away the rebound when Sam Montagno (Exeter, NH) made a great save. Saturday, Sep. 24 Berwick 1, Marianapolis 2 The Bulldogs faced off against Marianapolis on Alumni Weekend, and despite playing very well, the Bulldogs got their second loss of the season. Sam Montagno (Exeter, NH) came up with a big breakaway save in the 2nd minute to keep the game scoreless. Christine Gardella (Haverhill, MA), Caroline Starr (Rye, NH), and Annie Vatcher (Kennebunk, ME) had some great chances in the opening 20 minutes, but the Bulldogs could not capitalize. Marianapolis would get on the board first on a counter attack followed by a good through ball and a shot to the low right corner in the 25th minute. Then in the 31st minute Marianapolis picked off a pass and hit a shot top corner just out of reach of Montagno to increase the lead to 2-0 Marianapolis. In the 33rd Caroline Starr (Rye, NH) hit a shot just over the bar. Marianapolis put the pressure on in the closing minutes, but Sam Montagno (Exeter, NH) was huge in goal tipping a hard shot over the bar in the 38th minute and also making a big breakaway save in the 39th minute. Thanks to Montagno, the Bulldogs were down only 2-0 at the half. Berwick came out strong in the second half. Christie Sullivan (Stratham, NH) and Rayne Zimmermann were solid in the back managing Marianapolis's duo of strong strikers. Both had big plays

and key clearances. In the 46th minute Aaliyah Farid (Hampton, NH) beat two defenders and almost put the ball in the net but the shot was deflected out for a corner. In the 60th minute Rayne Zimmermann (Exeter, NH) hit a great ball to Caroline Starr (Rye, NH) who cut the ball inside and ripped a shot top corner to make it 2-1. In the 68th minute Tess Varley (Portsmouth, NH) played a great pass to Starr whose cross found Annie Vatcher (Kennebunk) open at the back post but the volley went wide. Berwick had their best chance to equalize in the 72nd minute when Aaliyah Farid (Hampton, NH) played a great ball over the top to Kenza Farid (Hampton, NH) who hit a great volley that hit the back post, and Caroline Starr (Rye, NH) almost put in the rebound. In the 79th minute Christine Gardella (Haverhill, MA) had a shot go just wide and shortly there after the final whistle blew. Sam Montagno (Exeter, NH) had 12 saves in net for the Bulldogs, who were handed their second loss of the season.

Girls' Field Hockey Wednesday, Sep. 21 Berwick 0, Southfield 3 Despite a strong offensive performance, the Bulldogs could not find the back of the net. Senior midfielder Brianna Rash and junior midfielder Emma O'Shaughnessy had stand out games.

Saturday, Sep. 24

Berwick 3, Concord Academy 1 Berwick field hockey beat EIL rival Concord Academy 3-1 at home in front of a large crowd of alums on campus to celebrate the school's 225th anniversary. Senior defender Sydney Hopkins (North Hampton, NH) scored twice off penalty corners. Sophomore forward Andrea Cardonna (Lynnfield MA) scored on a penalty stroke. The Bulldogs dominated the game offensively, earning 17 offensive penalty corners. The Bulldogs hope to build on this game as they move into the heart of their EIL league schedule.
