Fiber Network will be the Largest in Maine YORK COUNTY – The City of Sanford has announced plans to build a 32-mile municipal broadband network with optical fiber, a system eight times as large as the next largest municipal network in Maine. Sanford’s network will be capable of Internet upload and download speeds as fast as 10 gigabits-per-second. While driven by the need to stimulate and enhance commerce, the network will be mixed-use,

available to businesses, residents and government and nonprofit entities, and will position the city very favorably in ongoing efforts to attract new enterprises and jobs to the region. Sanford will work with two vendors: GWI, a Maine-owned Internet services provider, and NextGen Telecom Services Group, a fiber optic network contractor based in Rochester, NH. GWI and NextGen were partners in a competitive bid process, and they expect con-

struction to begin as early as Spring of 2016. The project is also the first major new fiber loop to be built to significantly extend the much-heralded 3-Ring Binder. The 3-Ring Binder in its original form did not serve York County. It is an open access fiber network intended to connect rural, disadvantaged, unserved and under-served communities to an ultra-modern See NETWORK page 9...

Rare Supermoon Lunar Eclipse of 2015 Thrills Skywatchers On Sunday, September 27, the moon passed through Earth's shadow and wowed sky-gazers around the world with a dazzling total lunar eclipse during a perigee full moon, better known as a "supermoon" (super blood moon.) Supermoons occur when the moon reaches its full phase at or near the satellite's closest approach to Earth, and appears abnormally large and bright and producing a reddish hue. The September 27 event

is quite special in that the last supermoon eclipse occurred in 1982 and the next won't take place until 2033.

“It was a tremendous honor to be on the Official Escort committee and to have the wonderful opportunity to see the Pope prior to his speech. The Pope’s inspiring message of 'hope and healing, of peace and justice' and his focus on four Americans — Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Dorothy Day, and Thomas Merton. His call for a renewal of a spirit of cooperation I hope, will inspire members of Congress and the President to work together to address our problems at home and the crises overseas," said Senator Collins following the Pope's remarks. YCCC Celebrates 20th Anniversary

WELLS – On Friday, September 25, York County Community College (YCCC) celebrated its 20th Anniversary at an event held at Village by the Sea in Wells. Village by the Sea was the first “home of the college. YCCC, then known as York County Technical College, held its first

classes there in 1995 before the construction of the campus on College Drive. YCCC President, Dr. Barbara Finkelstein welcomed guests and served as the event’s Emcee. Remarks were given by: Maine Community College (MCCS) Trustee, Larry Grondin; YCCC Foundation

Chair, Marc Brunelle; YCCC Staff Representative, Patricia O’Brien; YCCC Faculty Representative, Dr. Dianne Fallon, YCCC Alumni, Wayne “Colby Williams and one of YCCC’s Founding Fathers, William Kany Jr. Interim MCCS President, Derek Langhauser gave guests

a brief overview of the college’s history and recognized MCCS President Emeritus, Dr. John Fitzsimmons for his role, vision and leadership in the college’s founding. Special Representative to Senator Susan M. Collins, Cathy Goodwin was also in attendance and presented the college with a Congressional Record. Bonita Pothier, Special Representative to Senator Angus S. King Jr presented the college with a Letter of Congratulations. The Honorable Mark Eves presented a Senti-

ment issued by Maine’s 127th Legislature celebrating the college’s 20 years of commitment to the people of York County. York County Community College, established in 1994, is one of seven community colleges in the Maine Community College System. The college annually enrolls nearly 3,000 students in certificate and associate degree programs, continuing education, career and professional development and business training. YCCC is located at 112 College Drive in Wells.

~ News ~ ...NETWORK from page 1 communications network. “Utilizing the talented staff at Portland-based Tilson Technology Company for guidance, we went through a very exhaustive RFP process, approaching 22 vendors, said Jim Nimon, Executive Director of the Sanford Regional Economic Growth Council. “With our goal to establish a public/ private partnership, we learned a lot about various models, and left no stone unturned finding the best solution for the City of Sanford. This move will put Sanford on the map. The city joins a small but growing cadre of municipalities in Maine that have recognized how important ultra-fast Internet will be to the future of Maine’s economy. In just the last year, Rockport, South Portland and Islesboro have started to build their own fiber networks, and several other municipalities including Ellsworth, Old Town and Orono have announced that they will do the same. Sanford is the largest of these projects. Sanford’s mayor, Tom Cote, said bringing more jobs to the Sanford/Springvale area is the most important priority for the Growth Council board and the city council. “The sheer size and scope

of this undertaking is impressive, and that’s what I love about it, Cote said. “This is a bold move that will make Sanford a technological standout in the Northeast, and very attractive as a place to start, modernize or move a business. This is a truly visionary step, and absolutely necessary to boost economic growth. City Manager Steve Buck said the network can accommodate additional municipal partners along the proposed routes, such as Wells, Kennebunk and Alfred. He said Sanford insisted that GWI and NextGen build an “open access network, meaning that once it’s in place, providers other than GWI can use the infrastructure for an appropriate fee.

1st Annual “Django By The Sea” Gypsy Jazz Festival in Kittery KITTERY – On Friday and Saturday, October 9 and 10, the first annual “Django by the Sea” Gypsy Jazz Festival will take place at The Dance Hall in Kittery. Celebrating the music of guitar legend Django Reinhardt, the festival will feature some of the top Gypsy Jazz musicians in the United States. Performances both evenings begin at 7 p.m. Appearing at the festival will be two popular, Mainebased groups — Ameranouche and Mes Amis — as well as the NYC-based Koran Agan Quartet, and one of the hottest Gypsy Jazz bands in the nation, The Rhythm Future Quartet. Tickets are $25 for a one-night pass or $40 for a two-night pass. After each evening’s performances, there will be a post-show reception and “Djam" session at the nearby Buoy Art Gallery. Gypsy Jazz is a unique blend of Eastern European melodies, Parisian Musette, Spanish Flamenco and American Swing that was created and perfected by guitarist Django Reinhardt, violinist Stephane Grapelli and their fellow Gypsy musicians in the cafés of Paris during the 1930s and 1940s. In recent years, this classic form has been discov-

Today, Gypsy Jazz is one of the most distinctive and widely enjoyed jazz hybrids on the music scene, spawning popular Django Festivals around the globe, including Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago, New York and now — Kittery. The line-up for Friday, October 9, begins with Mes Amis, featuring Bangor-based guitarist, vocalist and composer Steve Lynnworth. This band plays an infectious mix of Gypsy, Latin and American jazz standards along with Steve’s original compositions. Following Mes Amis on Friday is the Koran Agan Quartet from NYC. A renowned guitarist, Koran has performed at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, Atlanta Jazz Festival, Rochester International Jazz Festival, DjangoFest NorthWest and more. On Saturday, the evening kicks off with a performance by the award-winning trio Ameranouche (pronounced “ahMare-ah-noosh”), a name that is a hybrid of “American” and “Manouche,” the Gypsy tribe of Django Reinhardt. Closing out the festival on Saturday will be The Rhythm Future Quartet featuring Django by the Sea cofounder and curator Jason See GYPSIES page 30...

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ ‘Saturday Night Fever’ Recalls 1970s Disco Era By Scott Andrews, Staff Columnist OGUNQUIT – The throbbing, electrifying disco beat goes on. And the famous film that epitomized the disco era is now an electrifying Broadway musical. Those are the take-home messages from “Saturday Night Fever, the final show of the 2015 season at Ogunquit Playhouse. “Saturday Night Fever is also a show that exemplifies two trends in contemporary Broadway theater. First, most new musicals are stage adaptations of popular films. Second, a high percentage of new shows are jukebox musicals. “Saturday Night Fever epitomizes both trends. It is a stage version of the 1977 film of the same name that starred John Travolta. The script for the stage adaptation is credited to Nan Knighton, Arlene Phillips, Paul Nicholas and Robert Stigwood, based on a story by Nik Cohn and Norman Wexler’s screenplay. The score remains a compilation of songs written and/ or performed by the Bee Gees, a British-Australian pop trio

comprising brothers Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb. (Bee Gees is shorthand for “Brothers Gibb.) Several additional Bee Gees songs have been interpolated into the stage version of the show. The plot concerns Tony Manero, a street-smart 19-yearold from Brooklyn, New York, who fights with his parents, works in a dead-end job in a hardware store and hangs around with four dead-end pals. But on Saturday nights, Tony’s life undergoes a total transformation at the local disco. Here under the dazzling lights, Tony is king of the dance floor and a magnet for every girl in the room. Considered a shoo-in for

A Chronology of Selected Paintings at Black Bear Gallery OGUNQUIT Don Gorvett’s Black Bear Fine Art Gallery is featuring the artist’s paintings from his summers of 1968 to the early1990s. Although Mr. Gorvett is well know for his large multi-colored woodcuts prints and drawings the public is generally unaware that prior to his intensive and productive printmaking years the artist spent numerous years experimenting with painting outdoors on location. These paintings in the exhibition have seldom been seen and are largely views of Gloucester, MA and Ogunquit. They are in the medium of oil on canvas and vary in style. The opening will be held upstairs at BBFA Gallery over looking Perkins Cove in Ogunquit, Friday 5-7:30 p.m. on Oc-

Koch. It’s an interesting amalgam of chain-link fence, corrugated steel and disco mirror balls – no fewer than seven of them – that undergoes frequent and rapid transformations between scenes. Lighting design, by Richard Latta, is another high point in the technical department.

a $500 prize offered in a disco dance contest, Tony needs to choose between a pair of potential partners, and a classic romantic triangle results. That powerful relationship drives the plot. Plus there are two significant sub-plots, both of which only partially resolve by the denouement. Luke Hamilton is mesmerizing as Tony, boasting a fine voice and exceptional dance moves. I also liked the two actresses who fly in his orbit: Haley Hannah as a loud and aggressive wannabe girlfriend and Jenny Florkowski as his quiet, hard-to-get love interest.

Keith Andrews skilfully manages a very large and outstanding cast of 24 professional actors, who sing and dance through 18 classic Bee Gees songs. “Jive Talkin’ is perhaps the best-known song in the score. Others include “Stayin’ Alive, “How Deep Is Your Love, “More Than a Woman and “What Kind of Fool. In a show where vibrant, energetic dancing is a central concept, the choreographer assumes an elevated role. Richard Hinds, who boasts extensive Broadway and international credits, keeps the movement flowing and always engaging for the audience. I was also impressed by the huge, flexible and aesthetically agile set, designed by Adam

Spiritual Direction Practice Opens in Kennebunk KENNEBUNK – Helen Rousseau is pleased to announce the opening of her Spiritual Direction Practice in Kennebunk. Helen is an ordained Interfaith Minister and a graduate of Adelynrood School of Spiritual Direction. She also holds a Masters Degree in Theological Studies from Boston University School of Theology. Spiritual Direction is an exploration of one’s spiritual path, or lack of, with a person trained in listening, deep reflection and spiritual practices. Spiritual Direction opens us up to healing, fulfillment and joy by developing an understanding of the Divine, God, the Great Mystery or a Higher Power. Some people have lost sight of the Holy in their lives and go to a Spiritual Director

to help them get clarity. Some, also, have been wounded by religious traditions in their younger years and seek healing and a deeper, freer understanding of what it means to be a spiritual person. From her years of spiri-

Thanks, Nita Dear Nita, There are several ways you can quickly open the Control Panel in Windows 10, and there is a way to create an icon for it on your desktop, taskbar and start menu. First, to quickly access the control Panel in Windows 10, you can just rightclick on the start button and find "Control Panel" listed in the context menu that appears. Once you have opened the Control Panel, you can right click on the taskbar icon and click, "Pin This Program To Taskbar" in the context menu. This will give you 1-click access to your control panel right from the taskbar. Another way to quickly access the Control Panel in Windows 10 is with a keyboard shortcut. Simply press the windows logo key and the letter X at the same time, and you will get the same context menu that

you saw when you right-clicked on the start button. If you want to add the control Panel to your start menu, you will need to search for it first. Just click on the start button, then type "Control Panel". Once you start typing, the search box will appear. When a link to the Control Panel appears in the menu, right- click on it, and click on "Pin To Start" to place a link in your start menu. Once you have the link in your start menu (you might have to scroll down to the bottom of the menu for newly placed links) you can drag the icon from the start menu to your desktop to place an icon on your desktop. Hopefully this will help you set up your computer so that you can quickly access the Control Panel. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have "gone over to the other side" and now have MACs, but a volunteer at the hospital where I work recently upgraded to WIN10 and now her printer won't work. What

should she do? It's a Dell computer and Dell printer. Becky Dear Becky, She should go to the Dell website and search for her printer model. Hopefully, Dell will have written new drivers for the printer and made them available on their website. If not, she will either have to go back to her previous version of Windows, or purchase a newer printer. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, When I had my old computer, I used to be able to make everything on the screen appear larger by changing my screen resolution. Now that I have a new computer with Windows 8 and a nice widescreen monitor, if I try to change the resolution, everything looks funny, and it is not any easier to read. How do I make the text on my screen larger and easier to read? I hope you can help me with my computer, Kimberly Dear Kimberly, Changing the resolution on new, widescreen LCD monitors will tend to distort the images, so you need to adjust the text and images using a dif-

ferent method. This will work in both Windows 7 and Windows 8: 1. Tap the windows logo key on your keyboard and type "Control Panel" then click on "Control Panel" on the start screen. (In Windows 7 you can also click on "Start" and then "Control Panel) 2. In the Control Panel, click on "Appearance and Personalization" 3. Click on "Display". 4. You will see a section labeled, Change the size of all items. Click on the size you want, Medium or larger, then click "Apply". You will have to log out of your account, and then log back in to see the changes, but this should make your new computer easier to read. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, A question about Excel -a pretty elementary question, I think, but I am not a practiced Excel user. I have (and use slightly) Excel 2007 and 2010 on my laptops. I use the program to maintain a record of the business miles I drive each year, for tax purposes, so each year I have to try to recreate the same form to fill in. Here's the question: How do I

ask the program to carry out the same procedure in multiple rows of the same column? (e.g. if I want column H to show the product of (G - F) in each row, and want this to happen in every row from 1 to 67, how do I program that?) I hope this is clear enough. Thank you for any help you can give! Jo Dear Jo, Thank you so much for your detailed description! It makes it very easy to answer your question. To make every row in column H show the product of (G - F), first make your formula in the first row. Make sure the formula is correct, and showing you the correct results, then, follow these simple steps. 1. Click on the cell with the formula once to highlight it. 2. Notice in the lowerright corner of the highlighted cell there is a small box. Hover your cursor over that small box and it will turn into a plus sign. 3. When your cursor turns into a plus sign, hold down your left mouse button and drag down as many rows as you want to copy the formula to. 4. Release your mouse button, and excel will copy the formula to each row, relative to that row. Now, if the formula in row 3 is G3 F3, the copied formula in row 4 would be G4 - F4. Health & Fitness UNE Announces ‘Doctors for Maine’s Future’ Scholarship Recipients STATEWIDE – The University of New England, (UNE) Biddeford, is pleased to award 34 College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) students with $25,000 each, as part of the Doctors for Maine’s Future Scholarship Program. The Doctors for Maine’s

Future Scholarship Program aims to rectify Maine’s shortage of health care providers by alleviating the high cost of medical education for students, encouraging them to pursue careers in primary care. To be eligible for the Doctors for Maine’s Future Scholarship, students must be enrolled in a

Fire Prevention Week: Oct. 4-10 Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the notorious blaze that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres on October 8-9, 1871. Forty years after the Great Chicago Fire, the Fire Marshals Association of North America (today known as the International Fire Marshals Association), decided that the anniversary should be used as an occasion to raise awareness about the importance of fire prevention. This year's Fire Prevention Week will be held October 4-10. The following are some tips for fire safety at home: Eliminate Hazards Keep space heaters away from anything that can burn; Store all flammable materials away from heat; Don’t let trash accumulate in attic, basement or garage; Don’t run extension cords behind

rugs or curtains; Use fuses, circuit breakers and appliances with UL (Underwriters Laboratory) seal only; Don’t overload circuits. Fire Prevention Keep operational fire extinguishers handy; Install and maintain smoke detectors. Develop Escape Plan Develop and memorize escape route; Assign responsibility for evacuating infants, elderly and infirm; Choose meeting place outside home; Keys must be easily accessible; Hold frequent fire drills; Test every door; be sure there’s no fire on the other side; Know two ways out. During a Fire Leave personal belongings behind; Don’t go back for any reason; If clothing catches fire, stop, drop and roll; In dense smoke, crawl on floor to nearest exit. qualifying Maine-based medical school program and be a Maine resident. The program stipulates that recipients must gain experience in rural health care and primary care environments during their education, and it is especially targeted toward supporting students with an interest in serving rural areas upon graduation. The program came to fruition in 2009 after the Finance Authority of Maine, in association with the Maine Legislature, reserved funds to serve medical programs in Maine.

The terms stipulate that every $25,000 offered to students from the State of Maine must be matched by the school through private philanthropic channels in an effort to increase the number of scholarships available for students. For the past several years in a row, a matched amount of $800,000 in scholarship funds has been awarded to 32 UNE COM students. “This is an ideal program that makes a significant difference to our COM students who strive to remain in the state to

a day texting, tweeting and typing on smartphones and tablets. Looking down at a phone increases joint stress, making your phone a true pain in the neck. Research shows just how much posture stress from tech device use is hurting our health. According to a recent study, looking down at your phone or computer with just 15 degrees of forward head tilt more than doubles the pressure on the neck and upper back. An adult head typically weighs 10 to 12 pounds when it’s in a neutral position. But as soon as you begin to tilt your head forward, the amount of weight your neck has to support increases dramatically. Researchers found tilting your head forward just 15 degrees surges the amount of pressure on your spine to 27 pounds. Depending on how far forward your phone habits make you tilt your head, it can add up to a whopping 60 pounds of pressure on your neck and spine! When you consider on average people spend two to four hours every day with head tilted down texting, surfing, gaming and reading on smart phones, the increased pressure on your neck adds up and stresses spinal joints and discs. It’s even worse with young adults – one study showed college women spent 10 hours a day on their devices, while college men spent 8 hours. Anything you do repeatedly, especially for so many hours a day trains and changes body posture and functionality. Doctors are seeing increasing numbers of people, from middle school age to older adults, complaining of neck aches, back pain and pinched nerves with many showing signs of early arthritis. Tech Neck causes more than muscle and joint pain.

Health & Fitness Mental Illness Awareness Week: October 4-10 STATEWIDE – October 4-10 is Mental Illness Awareness Week. Health Affiliates Maine (HAM) a statewide substance abuse and mental health agency, and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) are both calling on the public to learn the symptoms of mental illnesses such as depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and to “go

stigma free. To “go stigma free, is to see the person, not the illness; to listen and to understand. “It is also a time to free everyone from stereotypes that too often discourages people from getting help when they need it. says Executive Director, Andrea Krebs of Health Affiliates Maine. One in five adults experience mental illness every year; however, 50 percent of chronic

mental illness begins by age 14 and three-quarters by age 24. Although many people today understand that mental illness is a medical condition, individuals and families affected by mental illness are still often subjected to stigma and discrimination. “This is a time to raise public awareness about mental illness, says Krebs, “NAMI and Health Affiliates Maine hope everyone will educate themselves about

mental illness and share what they learn with family, friends and others. The staff at HAM will be wearing green, the official color of Mental Illness Awareness Week, to help bring attention and awareness to the issue. Health & Fitness The Often Unsung Benefits of Plastic Surgery Some are quick to pigeon hole plastic surgery as something restricted to the rich, famous or the vain. But plastic surgery often helps restore confidence and functionality, and is often relied on to correct birth defects or injuries. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 1 million reconstructive surgery procedures are performed each year. Plastic surgery can help repair everything from cleft palates to mastectomies. Many injuries, disfigurements or birth defects can now be mitigated if not corrected entirely by modern plastic surgery. Cleft lip or palate mending Cleft lip (cheiloschisis) and cleft palate (palatoschisis) are some of the most common birth defects affecting children in North America, says ASPS. They form during the very early stages of development when portions of the upper lip and the roof of the mouth fail to develop normally in utero. Through specialized surgery techniques, clefts can be repaired to improve appearance and improve a child’s ability to

eat, speak and breathe. Skin cancer repair According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the most common form of all cancers. Around 2 million people each year are affected by skin cancers. Dermatologists can remove cancerous growths, but often have to work with a plastic surgeon to minimize scarring or disfigurement at the surgical sites once the growths have been removed. Breast reconstruction Women who have undergone mastectomy procedures for cancer treatment may opt to have breast reconstruction surgery. A plastic surgeon can restore a more natural appearance to the breast through the use of implants or surgical techniques to recreate the nipple and areola. Plastic surgeons also can help reduce the appearance of scarring around the incision sites. Hand or foot surgery Hands and feet affected by any number of conditions can be operated on to achieve a more natural look. Webbed toes or fingers, burns and even extra fingers or toes can be surgically

WELLS Kitty needs a home! The kitty in the photo is not eating outside for the fun of it. Her life is no picnic. When she’s hungry she must hope that the kind person who noticed her will put food out, so she doesn’t go to sleep hungry again. She has to constantly watch her back to be sure no predator is near. The attack could come from the ground or the sky in the form of a hawk or owl. This kind of tension exhausts outdoor kitties, but they can’t nap for fear they’ll become a meal. They must find ways to stay warm as the seasons change. We’ve named her Orphan Annie, but she used to be someone’s family member - until they moved and simply left her behind. She’d been a happy part of the family for 8-10 years. Then she was abandoned. Now her only routine is survival. Obviously, Orphan Annie needs a Safe Haven. But our adoption center is full. So we need to find a foster home for her, and all the others out there. Every day they wait, their lives are literally at risk. A kind person is feeding her, but she’s wary and backs away. This is a good thing actually,

because stray cats must be careful. Some people are NOT nice. A few are downright cruel. Her own family deserted her, so why should she trust anyone new? Please consider adopting a senior kitty like Orphan Annie. The adopting public often overlooks older kitties. All her vet work will be completed, and we’ll waive her adoption fee for the right applicant. Here’s what you can do: Adopt any kitty from us, making room for one more to come out of from harm’s way. You may offer to foster a kitty in your home, sponsor a kitty for $10 a month,

make a donation toward a $125 kitty condo for her, until space in a cat room become available. If you donate the full $125 to buy a condo, your name (or a name you specify) will be put on it. Thanks, Kennebunk Savings Bank and all KSB customers who voted for Safe Haven in their annual customer balloting. Thanks to you we received a very generous check that will help keep our No-Kill mission running. Thanks for your generous outpouring of support for Little Sammi, the kitten born with CH which prevents her from walking. A woman who’s had CH kitties before and loves being their caregiver and mom will soon adopt her. Your donations are helping pay for Sammi’s medical care and a cart for her disabled rear legs in the future. Currently she’s using a fabric sling on wheels. She’s too tiny to actually pull it, but her legs are flexing and she’s getting exercise and building strength. Safe Haven’s thrift Shop needs bubble wrap, scotch tape, and large shopping bags with handles (both paper and plastic). We also need volunteers to ring up sales on Wednesdays and Fridays as our summer volunteers head South. Call Joyce 207-229-8314.

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK Meet Atticus, a sweet gentle teenage kitten who came in from a family that could no longer give their furry family member the care and attention he so loves and needs. The difficult decision was made to find Atticus a new family that would be able to provide all the love and attention that he needs and deserves. Atticus is an eleven-month-old neutered male Coon X. He has the sweetest personality and the gentlest manners that make for a wonderful combination. He is looking for an indoor only home where he will be safe and secure for the duration of his life. Atticus is current on all necessary vaccinations, will be excellent with all family members, including other non aggressive kitties and non aggressive dogs. In addition to Atticus, we still have a good selection of kittens, a very limited selection of teenage kittens, a smaller selection of young adult cats and a very limited number of older

kitties and canines also looking to you for a new loving family. Please check out our adoptable pets at www.petfinder.com in the 03906 zip code. Our “Support For Life” program asks for the pledge of a $10 monthly donation. Your $10 combined with the monthly donations of others will help us meet our ongoing expenses and continue our work as a true “No Kill” organization. Please help us continue our mission to provide a safe environment and quality care for abandoned, abused, and lost pets by becoming a “Support for Life” member and pledging a monthly donation. It is through your generosity that the organization exists and will be here to serve your community for years to come. Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK – Fall in Love at AWS! From now through October 31, join us for a Feline Frenzy. All adult cats six months and older have a reduced adoption fee of only $25. Come by Animal Welfare Society to fall in love with your new feline friend! Meet Cecilia, a 2-year old short-haired cat. Cecilia is a typical cat, she doesn’t always greet new visitors, but if you happen to be near and give her some attention, she’ll more than gladly accept it. She enjoys taking many naps, particularly in comfy beds or on high perches so she can survey her territory when she awakens. Cecilia would be happy to share a new home with other cats and children of all ages. While she may not be as energetically playful as a kitten, she has been known to swat at an occasional toy every now and

then. Cecilia would make a wonderful companion for just about any household, so stop on by the shelter today to meet her and see if she’s the right one for yours. Meet Topaz, an 11-year old short-haired cat. Topaz is a big, loving lady who enjoys getting attention from visitors. Sure, she can be a bit lazy from time to time, but it’s hard to blame her when she can be such a lovable fur ball. Topaz would be happy to share a new home with respectful children who will give her the attention she loves, yet will understand that she’s not always one to go running after toys. If you’d like to add this big, beautiful kitty to your home, then stop on by the shelter today to meet Topaz. Meet Smokey! Just because you’re old, it doesn’t mean you can’t still be adorable. Smokey exemplifies this in her demeanor and social

nature. Smokey is a 13-year old short-haired cat that you would swear isn’t a day over 2 years. She is sweet, affectionate, and loves getting attention from each and every person who visits; she even returns attention with kisses. When not being petted, she likes to burrow, so give her a comfy blanket or towel and watch her go. Smokey is declawed and would do best as the only pet in a new home. If Smokey sounds like the one for you then stop on by the shelter today to meet her. With fall travel right around the corner, many of us plan on hitting the road with our pooches to enjoy the Autumn scenery. However, for some four-legged family members, road trips can mean upset tummies. Queasiness in the car is not just a human problem. Dogs and puppies do sometimes exland for a program on animal care and handling from 10:3011:30 a.m. Thursdays - Furry Tales is back! Join us from 10-11 a.m., in the Humane Education Room at the Animal Welfare Society on Holland Road, West Kennebunk, preschoolers are invited to discover the exciting world of animals with stories, playtime, crafts, songs, movement, and animal time. The event is free to attend, though donations are appreciated. Furry Tales follows the RSU 21 school calendar. We will not hold Furry Tales during school breaks or on snow days. Saturday, October 10 Join us at Atria for a Halloween-themed Fashion Show. The Mobile Adoption Team will be there with dogs putting on a show for the residents. The event will start at 2 p.m.

perience motion sickness on car rides. Unfortunately, carsickness can make any kind of pet travel a distressing ordeal for both dogs and their families. Car-sickness doesn't have to be a serious or lasting problem for your pet. With the right treatment, it can be mitigated, or even stopped altogether. There are several causes of car-sickness in dogs and puppies. The most common include: Immature ears. In puppies, the ear structures that regulate balance aren't fully developed, which can cause them to be extra sensitive to motion sickness. Many dogs will outgrow car-sickness as they age. Stress. If traveling in the car has only led to unpleasant experiences for your dog - to vet exams, for example -- he may literally be worried sick about the journey. Self-conditioning. If your dog has experienced nausea on his first car rides as a puppy, he may associate car rides with illness, and expect to get sick in the car. Car-sickness doesn't look like you might expect it to in dogs, and you might not even See PETS page 35...

KHS Students Give Back: School Spirit Challenge KENNEBUNK – This year, a couple of KHS students decided to do something to give back to their community. In doing so, they chose to participate in the School Spirit Challenge this fall. This event incorporates a food drive, and a pep rally that promote participation within the community both inside and outside of school. The last week in September will be a focus week for collecting non-perishable items. Each day, there will be a theme, such as pasta or canned vegetables. We ask that students try to participate each day, as we are trying to reach our goal of 10,000 pounds of food. Funds are just as important as collecting non-perishables, and are greatly appreciated. A website has been created where you can donate food and/or funds towards the cause. This website can be found at the link: www. gsf b.org/donate/vfd/514. On

this website, you can choose food items to donate through a virtual grocery store, or donate funds directly to the cause. A portion of the proceeds do go directly back to local food pantries in addition to being distributed to families in need throughout the state. Every dollar donated equals four meals for a family in need. Beginning next week, we will have collection boxes in various locations throughout the high school to collect both food and funds to go towards our totals. In addition, on the morning of October 2 from 6-8 a.m. Channel 13 News will be at KHS hosting a televised pep rally. We ask that students arrive by 5:45 a.m. so that we can set up and allow the news crew to do the same. Throughout that time we will be participating in various school wide events. Any contributions are greatly appreciated.

$1,000 Donated to Stuff the Bus Through “Home Runs for Good YORK COUNTY – SIS Bank is proud to announce the donation of $1,000 to the Stuff the Bus program as a result of the Bank’s “SIS Home Runs for Good campaign. The promotion, a collaboration between SIS and WBLM-FM of Portland, gives $50 to a local non-profit organization for every home run a member of the Boston Red Sox hits at home throughout the month. Each month, a different area charity benefits. Stuff the Bus, a Strategies for a Stronger Sanford program, is the beneficiary of the money earned from the Sox’s 20 home runs at Fenway Park during the month of August. A school readiness campaign, Stuff the Bus provides at-risk children with the tools they need to be successful in the classroom. The program also provides free classroom supplies to teachers

so they can spend less out of their own pockets. “SIS is beyond pleased to donate to the Stuff the Bus program, said SIS Bank President & CEO Mark T. Mickeriz. “Stuff the Bus has a profound impact on our local community, investing time and resources to positively influence tomorrow’s leaders today. In addition to the $1,000 from Home Runs for Good, SIS also donated $250 and a backpack full of supplies to Stuff the Bus earlier this summer. In 2014, Stuff the Bus helped an estimated 2,000 students and 25 teachers from around York County. SIS’s contributions help put the organization well on its way to shaping the lives of even more community members this school year. For more details on the program and how you can help, visit http:// stuffthebus.me/. SIS Home Runs for Good

SCORE BOARD Berwick Academy

Girls’ Varsity Soccer BA vs Waring, Sep. 22 Score: BA 2, Waring 1 The Bulldogs held a 14 to 3 shot advantage and 15 to 1 edge on corners against Waring in their 4th game of the season. In the end the Bulldogs were able to come away with a 2-1 win. Berwick came out strong on the attack and in the 1st minute Caroline Starr (Rye, NH) dribbled down the left flank and slotted the ball to Julia Schaepe (Newburyport, MA) but the Waring keeper came up with the save. Just two minutes later Berwick's Tess Varley (Hampton, NH) played the ball into the box to Starr who tucked it into the back of the net for the first goal of the game. Waring would get the equalizer in the 7th minute off a free kick that beat Sam Montagno (Exeter, NH). Now tied 1-1 both teams battled back and forth. In the 15th minute Waring got behind the defense and Montagno came up with a big save to keep the game tied. In the 18th minute Adara Groman (Stratham, NH) played the ball to Kenza Farid (Hampton, NH) who ripped a shot from out side the 18 to the far post that dipped into the bottom right corner of the net. Two minutes later Caroline Hernon (Hampton, NH) played a great ball to Siobhan

McDermott (North Andover, MA) whose low shot was saved by the keeper. Annie Vatcher (Kennebunk) had a great chance before the half when she hit a left footed shot from the top of the 18 that went just over the crossbar. The Bulldogs finished the half up 2-1. In the second half the Bulldogs created a lot of chances but could not capitalize. McDermott had a good chance that was saved by the keeper. Schaepe set up Kat Reid (Dover, NH) for a good chance that was saved. The Bulldogs had many corners in the second half as well, but could not capitalize. The Bulldogs are now 4-0-0 and will travel to Winsor on Friday 9/25 for a 4pm kickoff. Go Bulldogs!

BA vs Winsor, Sep. 25 Score: BA 1, Winsor 25 The Bulldogs came away with a 1-1 draw at Winsor. Despite being down 1-0 since the 33rd minute, the Bulldogs never gave up and got the equalizer in the 76th minute, when Kenza Farid (Hampton, NH) played Julia Schaepe (Newburyport, MA) behind the defense whose shot was deflected and Kat Reid (Dover, NH) put it into the back of the net to earn the Bulldogs the draw. The first half was back and forth with Winsor creating a quality chance early that went over the bar and earning corners in the

31st and 33rd minute. Despite a good corner from Sahanah Heiderscheidt (Lee, NH) in the 2nd minute, a breakaway from Schaepe in the 9th minute, Reid breaking through in the 22nd minute and Farid's shot in the 29th minute, the Bulldogs could not get one by a strong Winsor keeper. The Winsor corner in the 33rd minute created a scramble in the 6yd box and put them up 1-0. In the 37th minute Caroline Hernon (Hampton, NH) set up Schaepe for a great chance but the Winsor keeper again came away with the save and the Bulldogs were down by 1 going into halftime. Sam Montagno (Exeter, NH) had a big save in the 45th minute, which kept the Bulldogs in the game and down by only one goal. Caroline Starr (Rye, NH) hit a rip near post off a pass from Hernon but the Winsor keeper tipped it over the bar. With only 6 mins left Reid broke through and tried to poke it by the keeper, but again the Winsor keeper got a touch, and Annie Vatcher's (Kennebunk) shot off the rebound went just over. But Reid got the equalizer just a few minutes later when Kenza Farid (Hampton, NH) played Julia Schaepe (Newburyport, MA) behind the defense whose shot was deflected and Reid put it into the back of the net to earn the Bulldogs the draw. The Bulldogs are now 4-0-1.

The Bank is now turning its attention to the gridiron with the return of SIS Touchdowns for Good, an initiative in which $50 is donated to a different nonprofit each month for every 6-pointer thrown by the New England Patriots’ quarterback. Obituaries Russell F. Grethe, 91 WELLS – Russell F. Grethe, a longtime, active community member of Wells, most recently of Kennebunk, died peacefully Saturday, September 26, 2015 at his residence with his family and friends at his side after a period of failing health. Russ, as he was known to his friends, was born February 28, 1924 in Everett, MA, the son of Edward and Florence L. Russell Grethe, and is a graduate of Newton High School, and Wentworth Institute in Boston, where he learned the skills of a machinist. Joining his father in the family business of repairing piano keys, he developed his skills and reputation, eventually taking over the business and expanding its reputation worldwide. He was humbled and honored to have included Henry Kissinger, Vladamir Horowitz, the 1876 Centennial at the Smithsonian, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and a Steinway Piano for the Chapel at West Point among those he serviced. Upon Russ’s

retirement, he passed the business on to his son Richard. Russ also took a great interest in his wife Georgia’s passion of their antique business, Eastmoor Antiques located at their Route 1 home in Wells. As a member of the Ogunquit Rotary Club, Russ took the lead in sponsoring and founding the Wells Rotary Club in 1986. He was an active behind the scene supporter, soliciting support for such projects as the Hope Hobbs Gazebo and Rotary Pavilion at Wells Harbor Park. He co-founded the Wells Community Kitchen, providing hot meals along

with socialization for those that found it difficult to get out regularly. Russ was also a supporter of the Wells Chamber of Commerce, and was dedicated to the Wells Community Food Pantry, now known as the St. Mary’s Ecumenical Food Pantry. Russ had a passion and love for road trips with his wife and young sons, spending fun times in Millinocket, Cape Cod and Lake Sunapee. Through his later years he especially looked forward to visits from his grandchildren. “We need to know where we are going so that we leave behind a community for the young people” Russell Grethe, Journal Tribune, 1993. He always put his thoughts into actions. With such a sharp mind and skilled hands, he was a ‘jack of all trades.’ Russ is predeceased by his wife Georgia V.

~ News ~ Adult Ed Offers Help for Those Working Toward Citizenship KENNEBUNK The Constitution and laws of the United States give many rights to both citizens and noncitizens living here; however some rights are only for U.S. Citizens. Some of the benefits given only to United States citizens include: Voting, bringing family member to the U.S., being eligible for federal jobs or being an elected official. The Test - People who wish to apply for citizenship are required to take the Naturalization Test. The test consists of a written and oral por-

tion and covers English and Civics, (U.S. History and government). Test takes prepare for 100 questions and on test day they are given 10. It can be quite daunting learning a new language and studying subjects like U.S. History and government which may be unfamiliar territory. Adult Education can help! Beginning on Monday, October 19, Adult Education of the Kennebunks and Arundel will hold a 12-week Citizenship Prep course. The classes will help students in all areas of the naturalization test, so you feel

Star Wars Reading Challenge ELIOT Marshwood Middle School in Eliot, had a special guest stop by to help kick off their school wide Star Wars reading challenge. Six teams of students will compete to see can read 90,000 pages first and reach the Ewok Moon of Endor. Yoda levitated prizes to the students and helped each team choose the Star Wars character would represent their

memories. Take short car trips to places your dog enjoys. This will replace negative associations with positive ones. Gradually acclimate your dog to the car. Start by sitting with your dog in the car while the engine is off each day for a few days. When he seems comfortable, let it idle. Once he is used to that, drive slowly around the block. Gradually progress to longer and longer trips until your dog seems comfortable driving anywhere. Offer your dog treats, or offer him a special toy that's just for car rides. This will make the car a fun and rewarding place to be. 3. Medication - While motion sickness can be helped in natural ways for some dogs, there are cases in which medications is the only option. There are both over-the-counter and prescription medications available, including: Anti-nausea drugs: reduce nausea and vomiting. Antihistamines: lessen motion sickness, reduce drooling, and calm nerves. Phenothiazine: reduces vomiting and helps sedate the dog. Caution: Always discuss any medications you plan to give your pet with your veterinarian to ensure that your dog is healthy enough to take them, will be given the correct dosage, and won't suffer any adverse effects. 4. Holistic Approach - Holistic treatments are another way to go for dog parents. They really can be effective, and are worth trying. Some common holistic choices include: Ginger. Ginger is used to treat nausea. Try giving your dog ginger snap cookies or ginger pills at least 30 minutes before travel. Peppermint, chamomile and horehound naturally help calm the stomach and nerves of your dog. These are available

more confident and well prepared, building skills and gaining confidence. For more information contact Adult Education of The Kennebunks and Arundel at 207-985-1116.

...PETS from page 35 realize that this is the challenge you're dealing with. Here are some symptoms to look out for: Inactivity/lethargy; Restlessness; Excessive/repetitive yawning; Whining/crying; Hyper-salivation (drooling); Vomiting. If your dog is suffering from car-sickness, symptoms will typically disappear within a few minutes after the car comes to a stop. Fortunately, there are a number of different methods available to help prevent and/or treat canine car-sickness: 1. Increase His Comfort Level - Turn your dog so that he faces forward. Motion sickness is related to the brain's ability to process movement. The less blurring movement he sees out the window, the better he might feel. Keep your dog as close to the front seat as possible (but not in the front seat). The farther back in the car you go, the more you sense motion. Opening the windows a crack. This brings in fresh air, which is soothing, and helps reduce air pressure. Avoid feeding your dog for a few hours before a car trip. Transport him in a travel crate. A crate will limit his view to the outside, and will help to keep any sickness he may have confined to a small space. Keep the temperature low. Heat, humidity and stuffiness can exacerbate carsickness. Distract him. Toys, soothing music, or just hearing you speak may help calm and distract a high-strung dog. Take frequent breaks. Getting out for fresh air or to stretch your legs can help him feel better periodically. Exercise before your car ride 2. Reconditioning - For dogs that have negative associations with riding in cars, reconditioning could be the answer. Reconditioning does take time and patience, but it really can help relax your dog. Drive in a different vehicle. Your dog might associate a specific vehicle with unpleasant

team. The first team there will have a team celebration together!

in pills and teas. Massage can help sooth and relax your pet before you travel. As with other medications, always discuss any holistic remedies you plan to give your pet with your vet to ensure that it's appropriate and the dosage is correct. In short, with some patience, training, or the right medications or holistic treatments, you and your dog will be able to ride safely and happily together anywhere you need to go! Macolini Becomes Semifinalist in National Scholarship Program

WELLS – Wells High School (WHS) senior Kate Macolini has been selected as a semifinalist in the 2016 National Merit® Scholarship Program. This academic achievement is a result of Macolini’s high test scores on the 2014 Preliminary SAT National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which administers this program, released the list of Semifinalists in September. Last fall, 1.5 million high school juniors at 22,000 high schools took the PSAT/ NMSQT®. Today there are 16,000 Semifinalists. Macolini now has the opportunity to apply to become a Finalist and compete for one of thousands of National Merit Scholarships available worth a combined total of $32 million. These scholarships will be available in the spring of 2016 to about half of 15,000 remaining Finalists. To become a Finalist, one must meet high academic standards and fulfill certain requirements in the application process. “I am very excited about it,” commented Kate Macolini

about becoming a Semifinalist. She added that she did not expect this news because she believed that her scores were “just average scores.” “Kate is an integral part of the WHS community as well as being a highly committed student,” commented WHS Guidance Counselor Sherri Anderson-Wormwood. “She has an indefatigable love of learning which translates into academic success. She is a well-rounded student who will no doubt contribute greatly to her college community – both inside and outside of the classroom.”

Anderson-Wormwood continued, “Kate has received honors and accolades athletically, musically and academically including the Dartmouth Book Award, Literary Achievement Award, and Student of the Trimester; as well as, book awards and certificates in: English, foreign language, Science, and Mathematics.” At school, Macolini is president of the National Honor Society, active in student government, a member of the track team, the math team, marching and concert band, the Political Affairs Club and the school newspaper. She served as Class of 2016 Secretary during her freshman and sophomore years. Macolini will graduate from Wells High School in June 2016 and hopes to study Biology or Engineering in college. Kate Macolini is the daughter of Melissa and John Macolini of Wells. “NMSC, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and by approximately 440 business organizations and higher education institutions

Don’t Forget a Pre-Trip Vehicle Check Before Hitting the Road If you are hitting the road this fall for some ‘leaf-peeping’ you will have lots of company. With millions of Americans taking road trips, the last thing you need is car trouble. A simple pre-trip driveway vehicle inspection helps ensure a safe and stress-free journey. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering and brake and transmission, as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. Check the hoses and belts that can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show signs of excessive wear. These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering and the cooling system. Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and

be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and inspect and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during precipitation. Keep the reservoir filled with solvent. If you find your vehicle needs service, repairs can be performed before your drive begins. The non-profit Car Care Council offers many free tools on its website (www. carcare.org) to help you drive smart, save money and be car care aware, including the popular 80-page Car Care Guide and a custom service schedule and email reminder service.
