hope to expand the Keep York County Warm! weatherization program to aid 30 homeowners and to offer more comprehensive repairs. Keep York County Warm! is a community based program which brings volunteers together to assess homes for their individual weatherization needs and to install weatherization kits for low-income, elderly and disabled homeowners. The expansion of the program follows the new addition of Habitat for Humanity York County’s Weatherization Coordinator, Ali Simpson, an AmeriCorps VISTA member. “I’m excited to be part of this project,” Simpson said. “Maine has some of the oldest housing stock in the country, which means many residents live in drafty homes and face high heating and energy bills. But with a few simple fixes, we can help vulnerable residents save money and live more comfortably.” Volunteers, under the guidance of team leaders with construction and home repair experience, will install simple yet effective materials such as door

sweeps and storm windows. Last year, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Saco, Biddeford Regional Center of Technology, and the Landing School in Arundel each had teams of volunteers build the storm window inserts. Each insert saves approximately $17 worth of heating oil, with many homeowners receiving as many as six inserts. Overall in 2013, the volunteers built 125 window inserts, saving homeowners approximately $2,125. “The volunteer and community response was wonderful last year,” said Meaghan Arzberger, Manager of Youth and Volunteer Engagement at United Way of York County. “Through our partnership with Habitat and our efforts in reaching out to community members this year, we hope to make the program even more effective.” Homeowner registration for the 2014 season is open until Wednesday, October 8. To register, contact your local General Assistance Office, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging or York County Community Action. If

Federal Grant Made Solar Panels a Reality at Library

By Carin Lee Staff Writer SOUTH BERWICK – The same warm September sun that lights up the interior of the South Berwick Public Library through large, southernfacing windows, now fills the solar panels on its roof with energy that becomes electricity. Town Manager Perry Ellsworth was the mastermind behind the

solar energy project. Project Manager Matt Bush of ReVision Energy, Portland, and his crew did the work, spidering out across the roof and covering it with black, shiny rectangles that connect to each other and then feed the building below with current. Town Library Director Karen Eger and very active Friends of the Library had a solar-paneled roof on their wish

list for the library - a good candidate with “... a big roof, up so high, with nothing in the way...” said Eger, …“no buildings close enough to block any sunlight.” In July of this year, Ellsworth received word of federal grant money available for energy projects. The $120,000 grant stipulated that work on the project be completed by September 30, so Perry needed to act fast. He immediately made contacts for bidding and communicated with Efficiency Maine, the state agency administrating the grant funds, and talked with area towns also using grant money. As a result of his efforts, he accumulated 1,000 emails in one

...SOLAR from page 2 clean, renewable geothermal power for heat. “And now the solar is the frosting on the cake,” said Ellsworth. Looking at the environmental cost, or “carbon footprint” of the project, it will take only a year and a half for the solar panels to produce the same amount of energy it took to manufacture them. ReVision Energy workers completed the project in thirteen days, finishing September 17. Matt Bush, project manager, said it took “... a shocking amount of effort - a very challenging roof - very steep and old, so nothing was flush.” But he and his crew perservered, collaborating with Ellsworth on a well-planned project. Bush and his crew packed up on their last day, still wearing the safety harnesses that protected them while they performed their dangerous work. Bush was “excited that the solar energy will provide electricity for hot water, lighting, and anything plugged in the library.” He also credited Ellsworth with great “long term vision.” Library Director Eger will put details about solar energy on the library’s website, so anyone with a curiosity about this alternative way of providing electricity may read more about it. She leaned back with a smile of satisfaction, saying: “It’s not that often that you get excited about a building. But it is nice when beauty and efficiency come together.”

studying and thinking about the coming years, he is creating a foundation for a career as a first responder by being a volunteer firefighter with the Wells Fire Department. That is not all Cox is doing in his ‘spare time’. In March of 2014, he added ‘Police Cadet’ to his growing resume by becoming a cadet with the Portsmouth Police Department in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. In addition, he is studying to be an emergency medical technician (EMT) at Sanford Regional Technical Center. “As a police cadet, we are exploring the law enforcement field,” continued Cox. “It’s a great experience for me to learn what the duties of a police officer are. We do many things while we are there, both hands on and classroom learning.” Cox added that he is with the Portsmouth PD for three and a half hours a week. At the PD, Cox and other cadets spend time exercising studying and training. The cadets also do volunteer work in the Portsmouth community. Cox spends a lot of his free time from school each week at the Wells Fire Department taking in a variety of information and learning new skills. He proudly carries a pager on his side that links him to the fire department, as he is now a volunteer firefighter that can go out on any alarm call with some restrictions. “Ever since I was around the age of four, I have looked up to firefighters,” commented Cox. “It was always my life goal to become a firefighter and a Maine state trooper. Finally, I’m able to become active in the fire department as a junior firefighter and a police cadet.” “I have gotten to do many things with the fire department,” stated Cox, who is in the Junior Firefighter Program and has been reporting to the Wells FD since August of 2013. “Since I have been there, I have been to one fire in town. It was a good experience and I can’t wait to see where I will be at in the future with the fire service.” “Brandon is a real asset to the department with his skills of setting up a rehab station whenever needed,” commented Administrative Assistant to the WFD Chief Debra Nolette. According to Nolette, Cox has logged 470 hours at the WFD doing a variety of tasks including hose testing and inspection activities. Cox has also responded with the Department to 67 incidents and attended 45 training sessions covering a vaSee CAREER page 16...

to be working,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign reinforces the importance of testing smoke alarms each month, and works to ensure that people have the needed protection in the event of a home fire.” Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half. While research shows that most U.S. homes have at least one smoke alarm, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. “The common presence of smoke alarms in the home tends to create a false sense of security,” said Carli. “Simply having smoke alarms isn’t enough. They need to be tested and maintained properly.” In addition to monthly testing, smoke alarms should be installed and maintained as follows: There should be at least one smoke alarm on every level of the home (including the basement), outside all sleeping areas and in every bedroom. For smoke alarms that include a 10-year non-replaceable battery, replace the entire smoke alarm if it begins to “chirp”, indicating that the battery is running low. For smoke alarms that use regular batteries, replacing the batteries once a year is recommended, or before then if the battery begins to chirp. All smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years or sooner if they don’t respond properly when tested. For the best protection, smoke alarms should be interconnected, so that when one alarm sounds, they all do. Visit www.firepreventionweek.org for more safety information.

Maine Awash in Color with Peak Fall Foliage STATEWIDE A beautiful tapestry of colors blankets northern Maine where forest rangers report that the fall foliage season will reach peak conditions this weekend. “With below average day time temperatures and very chilly nights over the past several days, northern Maine has seen the progression of color rapidly spreading throughout the forest canopies and hillsides in zones 6 and 7. BUSINESS & FINANCE When Is It Time to Make Portfolio Changes?

The kids are back at school and summer vacations are now just fading memories, so it must be autumn. But the seasons don’t just move on the calendar — they also change in your life. And, speaking of changes, you’ll have to make many of them as you move

through the years — and that includes changes to your investment portfolio. But how will you know when it’s time to take action? Just as Mother Nature sends out “signals” to indicate a change in seasons — blooming flowers, falling leaves, warmer or colder temperatures, longer

or shorter days, etc. — your portfolio will frequently “tell” you when you need to make adjustments. Here are a couple of indicators you may want to heed: • Out-of-balance portfolio — Even the best stocks can lose value when the overall market is down, but if you only own stocks, you could take a big hit during a downturn — and if it happens repeatedly, you may find it hard to even stay invested. After all, stocks will always fluctuate in value, and protection of your principal is not guaranteed. Yet you can at least help defend yourself against market volatility by balancing your portfolio with a mix of stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and other investments, with the percentage of each type of asset based on your individual goals, time horizon and risk tolerance. • “Overweighting” of indi-

vidual investments — Related to the point made above, you can also have too much money kept in a single investment, such as an individual stock or bond. Sometimes, this “overweighting” can happen almost on its own, as when a stock, or stockbased vehicle, has increased so much in value that it now takes on a larger percentage of your portfolio than you had intended — possibly bringing with it more risk than you had intended, too. As a general rule, no single investment should take up more than a small percentage of your entire portfolio. Your own life may also send you some messages regarding changes you may need to make to your investment and financial strategies. Here are just a few of the milestones that may trigger necessary moves: • New child — You’ll need to review your life insurance to make sure it’s sufficient to help provide for a newborn or newly

adopted child, should anything happen to you. You may also want to begin investing in a college savings vehicle, such as a 529 plan. • New job — Assuming your new job offers you a retirement plan, such as a 401(k) or similar vehicle, you’ll have some choices to make. How much can you afford to contribute? How should you allocate your dollars among the investment choices offered in the plan? How can you best integrate your 401(k) or other plan into your overall investment portfolio to avoid duplication? • Impending retirement — As you enter retirement, you may want to adjust your portfolio to help reduce its short-term fluctuations and to provide more current income opportunities. At the same time, you may still need to invest for growth — you could be retired for two or three decades, and you’ll need to stay ahead of inflation. Pay close attention to the messages coming from your portfolio — and from your life. These “signals” will give you a good idea of when it’s time to make the right investmentrelated moves. Home Sales Increased 3.32 Percent & Prices Eased 2.2 Percent STATEWIDE – Sales of single-family existing homes continue to rise in the state of Maine, according to statistics released recently by Maine Listings. A total of 1,556 homes changed hands during the month of August 2014 - an increase of 3.32 percent from 12 months ago. The August median sales price (MSP) eased 2.2 percent to $178,000. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. National sales were down

4.9 percent last month, while the MSP increased 5.2 percent to $220,600. The National Association of Realtors reported that regionally, sales in the Northeast followed national trends with a dip of 4.3 percent. The regional MSP of $265,800 represents a decrease of 0.8 percent. Angelia Levesque, President of the Maine Association of Realtors, said, “We have seen a consistent trend of unit volume increase and sales price decrease over the last few months. The good news is that buyers are out

there and they are stepping up and purchasing. Levesque, a Realtor with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate/The Masiello Group in Bangor, advised that, “With the slight decrease in home values, sellers must seek advice from their Realtor and carefully evaluate their listing price. Consider how you are positioned in your market. Now is perfect time to capture buyers during the active fall season. Source: Maine Real Estate Information System, Inc. (d/b/a Maine Listings).

Our patients come in hoping to avoid the drawbacks of other more invasive interventions that often have undesirable side effects. After care, we often find those interventions become unnecessary. It’s not that we’ve sought to replace them, we just attempt to facilitate proper function and healing first, in non-emergency situations only, through a course of neuro-structural correction.” This kind of holistic approach is part and parcel with the overall wellness-driven tact that drives the Great Works practi-

Health & Fitness A Journey of Endurance For A Cause NORTH BERWICK A Maryland man running on foot from Lubec Maine to Key Largo, Florida passed through southern Maine last week in a quest to raise public awareness and funds for the fight against Sturge-Weber Syndrome (SWS). Al DeCesaris began running on September 8 in Lubec, logging about 20 miles each day. On September 22 and 23, DeCesaris ran through Kennebunk, Wells, North Berwick and South Berwick. DeCesaris’ final destination is Key Largo Florida, which he hopes to reach in mid December after running through 14 states. The total run will be about 2,000 miles. DeCesaris made an overnight stop during his run in North Berwick at Angel of the Berwicks Bed & Breakfast. “I couldn’t have picked a better town to stop in, “ said DeCesa-

Golf Tournament Raises $47,000 for Miracles Campaign for Obstetrics and Pediatrics YORK The York Golf & Tennis Club was the setting for the 26th Annual Frank E. Hancock Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit York Hospital on Sunday, September 28. Inspired by Indian summer weather and York River views, over 160 golfers and guests came out and helped raise $47,000 in support of The Miracles Campaign for Obstetrics and Pediatrics at York Hospital.

According to York Hospital Lead of Development Carol Kane, “Our sponsors and golfers simply continue to give back. Each year, they step up and come through for us; we realize we couldn’t succeed without their steadfast support.” This year’s proceeds will help to fund the Obstetrics and Pediatrics renovation at York Hospital - from labor, delivery and recovery rooms, a dedicated nursery to private breastfeeding room and new secure reception and

He passed away in 1988 leaving a legacy of community service. His strong leadership and fundraising efforts resulted in a number of important hospital expansions between the years 1958-1978. Kathleen “Kay” Hancock and children continue his legacy and were all present to support this year’s tournament. Following tournament tradition, players and guests savored a delicious dinner catered by York Hospital’s dining and nutrition staff. And while raffle and silent auction winners were applauded, the live auction crowd was entertained and “eagerly encouraged” to increase their bids by Auction Host, Joshua Hancock, son of Frank and Kay Hancock. “I’m delighted to come here to support York Hospital and the Golf Tournament, and even more so

St. Francis, founder of the Franciscan Order of Friars, is remembered in many stories about his relationship with animals and his deep affinity with nature. Blessing reminds us

to celebrate creation and to be faithful stewards of the earth. Those bringing pets are asked to leash or crate them for the animals’ safety. Families may wish to bring a picture of a pet that is too infirm to come, who may be unable to attend the ceremony, or who has died in recent years and for whom the family is thankful. Beloved stuffed animals are also most welcome. Organizations who work to be stewards of the earth and our communities will also join in for the morning. These will include Caring Unlimited, Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting, and the York Community Ser-

vice Association. St. George’s Church is located at 407 York Street, Route 1A, in York Harbor. For details, email Susan Mullens at mainemullens@gmail.com.

Owner, Bill Doherty, says “We have a great bar staff at BeachFire and have become very popular with tourists and locals for not only our food, but also our adult beverages. Bartender, Pete MacDougall, does a great job and is responsible for coming up with the recipe for this Bloody Mary. We appreciate all our customers and others around the country that have gone online and voted for us. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, Somehow I get extra toolbars across the top of my page and would like to get rid of them. But I cannot figure out how to do it. Help, please! Janice Dear Janice, I have been fixing a lot of computers lately that have multiple toolbars and coupon programs

installed. These toolbars and programs usually slow your computer down, display unwanted advertisements, and sometimes make it impossible to navigate on the internet. Getting rid of them is sometimes easy, and sometimes very difficult. First, you can go to the control Panel, click on “Uninstall A Program” and try to find the toolbar in the list of programs.

You can access the print settings in Firefox, you just have to use a different method of getting to them. Open Firefox, and go to the page that you want to print. Tap the “Alt” key on your keyboard to display the Firefox menu bar. In the menu bar, click on “File” and then “Page Setup”. The Page Setup dialog box will open, and you will see a check box in front of “Shrink to fit Page Width”. Click to remove the check mark from the “Shrink to fit” setting. While you are in this dialog box, you can also change the scale to whatever percentage you desire. Click “OK” to save your changes and close the dialog box and you will now be able to print with a larger print size in Firefox. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? print size of web pages using Internet Explorer browser. I am having the same problem but am using Firefox browser and use Yahoo.com email program and Yahoo as my home page, therefore I have no small “Printer Icon” with the small arrow that you described using IE browser. I wonder if you could tell me the steps of how I could increase the print size using Firefox web browser? I am a recipient of your newsletter of many, many years and I learn something each week. Thank you, Jeanette

Some toolbars are listed here, and you can simply click on them, then click “Uninstall” in the toolbar. Other toolbars are hidden and more difficult to remove, and require quite a bit of searching on your computer. If you cannot find the toolbar you want to remove in the Control Panel, I would suggest you bring your computer to a local repair shop and have them clean the computer up. This is something that I do for my customers all the time. Elizabeth
