Harvestfest is held every year on the weekend following the three-day Salefest event held Columbus Day weekend. Harvestfest extends the season one more week for many businesses in the area and aims to support the entire region and community. This festival includes a variety of activities, live performers, local food vendors, juried

Senator Collins, Federal Highway Administration Administrator Greg Nadeau, and Maine Department of Transportation Commissioner David Bernhardt. As the Chairman of the Committee that oversees funding for the Department of Transportation, Senator Collins works closely with Secretary Foxx in Washington to improve our nation’s air, maritime, and surface transportation systems. Senator Collins was a strong advocate for the $25 million grant that was awarded to
Maine in 2014 for the rail portion of the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge. In addition, the Port of Portland was awarded $5 million in 2010 and $7.7 million through Senator Collins’ efforts. She invited Secretary Foxx to Maine so that he could see firsthand the infrastructure improvements underway in Maine due to these federal investments. Along with Maine DOT Commissioner David Bernhardt, Senator Collins and Secretary Foxx held a press conference later in the day at the Port of Portland.
Embrace A Vet Assists Berwick Veteran BERWICK Brian Drake, a 22-year Army veteran who served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, went through some dark days last December following the tragic loss of his 7-year-old service dog Sophia. The gallant German Shepherd was struck while protecting her owner from being hit by a vehicle while checking his mailbox. Based on outstanding police work, Facebook postings, and calls from Berwick residents, the driver was identified, arrested and charged. But while justice was served, Drake,
deeply felt the loss of Sophia, who helped him cope with post traumatic stress. The community response

to the incident was overwhelming. Members of Berwick’s Charles S. Hatch Post #79 set up a fund for the Drake family at
Kennebunk Savings and a local business increased the reward offered for information about the incident to $2,000. But the real breakthrough came just recently with the arrival of Kaiser, an American King Shepherd into the Drake family household, courtesy of Embrace A Vet. From acquiring a dog to providing the months of intensive training required before they “graduate, service dogs can cost thousands of dollars, placing them out of the financial range See DRAKE page 2...
