Annual OgunquitFest has Arrived! OGUNQUIT Ogunquit's town-wide fall festival takes place on October 21, 22 and 23, when the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce will hold the town’s 13th annual OgunquitFest weekend. The festivities begin Friday, October 21 with a Brewfest at the Ogunquit Playhouse. Throughout the month of October, until OgunquitFest weekend, look for scarecrows at participating businesses and vote for your favorite. On Saturday October 22, the Autumn Bazaar, a shopper’s dream of one-of-a-kind crafters, artists and retailers, will be ready to help you with your holiday shopping. Pumpkin decorating and story hour at the Dunaway Center, OgunquitFest Olympics at the beach and horse-drawn wagon rides departing from Veteran’s Park at the corner of Beach and Main Streets are sure to be a delight for the kids. The Classic and Antique Car Show (rain date Sunday) at the Main Beach will be a draw for the entire

family. Also at the beach, from 2:30-3:30 p.m., let the kids run off some energy in our Halloween-themed Obstacle Course. There may be a great special guest appearance too! You won't want to miss the Wine Tasting from 2-5 p.m. at the Village Food Market, 230 Main Street. Try some tasty wines as well as crackers, salami, and cheeses. And what's a fall festival without a ghostly Tour from 6-8 p.m. at the Ogunquit Heritage Museum, Obeds Lane. Tours by the Ogunquit Heritage Museum. Bring your flashlight – it’s dark out there! $5 adults, children under 10 free. Weather permitting. Parking available at Obed's Lot (entrance to lot is on Cottage Street). Let your hair down on Sunday October 23, with the costume parade for the whole family (yes, bring the dog, too!), Waiter Races, and the High Heel Dash for charity. Be sure to check out these and more events at visitogunquit.org, or pick up a brochure, available at businesses throughout town. For more information: maineoktoberfest.com.

Learn more about Wentworth-Douglass Hospital’s plan to join the Massachusetts General Hospital Family A Community Forum will take place Thursday, November 3rd at 6pm at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. State regulators are currently reviewing the proposal put forth earlier this year by both WentworthDouglass Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital to have Mass General become the parent organization of Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. This is an exciting proposal for Wentworth-Douglass and our entire community—one that will enhance the quality care available for patients and their families right here on the Seacoast. WORLD-RENOWNED CARE Wentworth-Douglass has had a clinical affiliation with with Mass General since 2008 which has brought new sophisticated levels of care with world-class clinicians and expertise to this community. Joining the Mass General family is a natural progression of this close relationship and will make Wentworth-Douglass a leading destination for health care right here in the Seacoast with additional specialty services to treat conditions not traditionally available at community hospitals. LEADING-EDGE PROTOCOLS Wentworth-Douglass will provide care with evidencebased best practices created by the nation’s leading

hospital. In conjunction with our existing network of skilled primary care and specialty providers, new skills and technology will mean cutting-edge care is available right here in the Seacoast. SEAMLESS INFORMATION SHARING Medical, diagnostic and pharmaceutical information will be accessible by providers through a shared (and protected) electronic medical record system. This makes transitions in care safer and meets the challenges of the future in a more cost effective manner by reducing unnecessary testing for patients and improving the efficiency and coordination of care. This proposed acquisition is still under review but its terms note that while Mass General would be the parent organization, Wentworth-Douglass Hospital would remain an independently licensed, not-forprofit, charitable health care organization, and maintain its own board of trustees, medical staff, community connections, and fundraising activities. We invite you to learn more and ask your questions at our Community Forum in the Garrison Auditoriums at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital on November 3 at 6pm. Location: 789 Central Ave, Dover, NH 03820.

Salvation Army Needs Your Help KENNEBUNK Fall and Winter time is the hardest season for The Salvation Army. Donations are at an alltime low. The Salvation Army will be at Maine Cleaners in Kennebunk collecting donations this Saturday, October 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Do you have items you’ve been meaning to get rid of that have been sitting in your house for a long time? If the answer to any of these is “yes, then why not donate them to The Salvation Army and be our partner in doing the most good? All donations are tax deductible. This will be a large item drive as well. Bring furniture that is in good condition. Since we do not solicit government funding for this program, the ARC program is made possible through the generosity of those who donate goods that can be sold in our family thrift stores and provide services that are made available to the participants of our programs. Online Driver License Renewal Service now Allows Users to Update Address STATEWIDE Motorists in Maine can now easily update their address and physical attributes when obtaining a duplicate license or renewing a license using the Driver License Renewal (DLR) online service at www. maine.gov, Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap announced recently. This new option, which also applies to ID cards, became available as of October 5, 2016. Previously, the online renewal service was not avail-

able to those who wanted to update their address, height, weight or hair color. Class C licenses, which are issued to non-commercial drivers, are valid for six years. The online renewal service is available to any Maine licensed driver with an active motor vehicle license or motorcycle license, and any holder of an ID card. Girl Scouts Sign-Up Events STATEWIDE Girl Scouts of Maine (GSME) announces that it will host new member sign-up events for potential members and volunteers at various locations in the month of October and November as a part of a new recruitment initiative. These events, hosted around the state, will bring together girls from kindergarten through fifth grade and their parents, and allow them to discover why Girl Scouting is important to the development of girls, how it relates to the success of young women today, and the important role that adults play. The following is a list of sign-up events in this area: October 15 - York Harvest Fest, York Beach, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Dyer Library, Saco, 10:30

a.m.; October 22 - Kittery Recreation's Community Halloween Celebration, Kittery, 12-3 p.m.; November 2 - York Public Library, York, 5 p.m.; November 7 - William Fogg Library, Eliot, 5 p.m.; November 12 Rice Public Library, Kittery, 10:30 a.m. For more information, visit girlscoutsofmaine.org or call 888-922-4763.

donate back to residents there and thank them for their efforts. This year the Chamber of Commerce, the Kennebunk Police Department and the Brick Store Museum will serve as collection drop-off locations. Collection boxes are out now, so donors can pace their candy purchases throughout the month of October. “In my mind, it’s a community tradition and it’s one worth keeping because so many of us enjoy it," said Kate Frost Mastrangelo, a Kennebunk mom who started the drive years ago. "People from other towns come and enjoy it now, too. It’s one of our biggest, most popular community gath-

erings. If we don’t jump in as a community and help this tradition continue, it won’t. Donations of Halloween candy are being collected at the Chamber of Commerce on Water Street, the Kennebunk Police Department on Summer Street, and the Brick Store Museum on Main Street.

Donations should be dropped off at any location by Friday, Octobr 28, and Chamber volunteers will distribute the candy to Summer Street homeowners. Summer Street will be closed, at Summer and Depot Streets and at Summer and Park Streets, from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday, October 31.

People and Business ProďŹ les New President, Vice President at MMA

YORK COUNTY Kennebunkport Town Manager Laurie Smith (pictured) will become the next President of Maine Municipal Association’s Executive Committee and Linda Cohen, City Councilor in South Portland, was recently elected Vice President. Smith, who began her career in municipal government as manager of the Town of Boothbay in 1988, assumed the Vice Presidency last January and will serve in that role through December. She will succeed Stephan Bunker, Selectman in the Town of Farmington, as President of MMA in January 2017. Bunker will serve as Immediate Past President in 2017. Smith said her top goal is to reach out to MMA members and ensure that their needs are being met during the 21st Century. “Maine Municipal Association has been a valuable resource for me during my 27 years of service in municipal government, she said. “I hope that our outreach, training and staff sup-

port services continue to provide the same experience for our 486 members. Smith has served as Town Manager in Kennebunkport since 2014. She previously was Town Manager in Wiscasset (2010-2014), Assistant City Manager, Interim Finance Director and Community Relations Manager in Auburn (19992010). Prior to that, she served as manager in Boothbay Harbor and Oxford. Smith has been a member of the MMA Executive

Committee since 2011, she is a board member with the Maine Energy Investment Corp. and she is a former President of the Maine Town, City & County Management Association. Smith is a graduate of the University of Maine with a degree in Public Administration. One specific area of focus for MMA and municipalities in general will be succession planning, particularly in regard to municipal staffs and key officials, Smith said. “With an aging work force, Maine municipalities need the next generation of police officers, firefighters, assessors, code officers, town clerks and town managers, said Smith. “Maine Municipal Association will be called upon to assist our members to attract and train the future public work force of our state. Founded in 1936, the MMA is a voluntary, non-partisan, member-service organization to which 486 municipalities in Maine belong.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, Thank you for all the years of information, many of a great help. Now I have a question. Do you use an online password program? I have so many different passwords between work and home with loads of pieces of paper with each one on, that I thought maybe this might be the way to go and wonder what you thought of the different ones. I have been getting emails from Dashlane and seeing I know nothing about these thought I would ask you. Thank you, Barb Dear Barb, I have not used dashlane, but I have used an online password manager, lastpass for several years now. I have one master password with Lastpass that I don’t have written down, and I don’t use for other

sites. Using this one password, I keep track of all my other passwords. I also use it to store secure notes and information that I need to keep private. Just like Dashlane, Lastpass is free to open an account, but also has a premium version for extra features. Both programs appear to be secure and encrypt your data so that only you (or someone with your master password) can read it. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Do you like Acronis True Image better than Carbonite? Thanks! Liz Dear Liz, I have both Acronis and Carbonite installed on my computer, and I use them both on a regular basis. I can’t really say that I like one better than the other because they don’t do exactly the same thing.

Carbonite is an online backup program that copies your important files, over the internet to their servers. This is important because your data is safe even if your computer is stolen, or destroyed. Acronis is a local backup program. It can be configured to copy your important files to a local disk like an external USB drive. You can also create a recovery backup on either optical disks (like DVDs) or your external drive that can be used to restore the entire hard drive in case of failure. It is easier and faster to recover your files with Acronis, but in the case of fire, theft or some other disaster, chances are your data would have been lost or destroyed along with your computer. In that case, the files on Carbonite’s servers will be there waiting for you. I hope this helps you understand the difference between the two programs. Elizabeth

OMAA’s ‘Art by the Sea’ Gala Raises Record Funding Moser to Speak on Lake Baikal Tour

OGUNQUIT Ogunquit Museum of American Art (OMAA) has announced that its August 20th ‘Art by the Sea’ auction and gala, the museum’s largest annual fundraising event, raised a record $110,000. “We’re so thrilled with the enthusiasm of our supporters and so appreciative of everyone who made this event such a great success, from donating artists to sponsors to patrons and volunteers, said Andres Verzosa,

OMAA Interim Executive Director and Curator. “We broke records – Art by the Sea broke six figures for the first time this year, exceeding our wildest expectations. The record amount we were able to raise for our White Glove Fund alone – $22,200 to support conservation and restoration of our permanent collection – is a real testament to how much our supporters value and appreciate this museum. It’s truly a very special place with a wonderful story to tell about OMAA’s early

roots in American Modernism and the early art colony. In addition, the annual auction elicited its highest ever bid for an art object, a winning price of $13,000 for a painting by regional artist Ron Emmerling, entitled, “Waiting for the Sea to Rise. “This painting resonated with many of our auction guests for a variety of reasons, from the painting’s nod to Hurricane Katrina to the artist’s own triumph over personal adversity, said Art by the Sea Auction Committee Chair Lisa Aubin. “We were delighted with its success and with the warm reception received for all of the works contributed by our talented and generous donating artists, she added. While White Glove contributions raised from the annual event are used exclusively for restoration of OMAA’s permanent collection, all other funds raised from ‘Art by the Sea’ are used for the museum’s programs and general operation. OMAA Board of Directors President David Mallen noted, “Art by the Sea contributions represent a significant source of funding for the museum’s continuing operations. The funds raised will help OMAA continue to thrive and remain an important arts institution in the region. For more information, visit www.ogunquitmuseum.org.

WELLS Lake Baikal, also called the “pearl of Siberia, is a truly astonishing place – Earth’s deepest lake, holding a fifth of the world’s fresh water. At 25-30 million years old, it is also one of the most ancient geographical features on the planet. Perhaps this is why the lake’s water alone is home to 1,500 plant and animal species, 80 percent of which are found nowhere else on Earth! Diverse habitats around Lake Baikal – from expansive shorelines and mountain

ranges to taiga forests and steppe meadows – attract numerous birds. Some soughtafter species include Siberian Blue Robin, Daurian Jackdaw, Amur Falcon, Siberian Thrush, Booted Eagle, and the endangered Yellow-breasted Bunting and Swan Goose. Mammals such as Long-tailed Ground Squirrel, Siberian Chipmunk, and the endemic Baikal Seal are also a treat to see. You’ve heard the rumors about

Slight Increase in Gas Prices as Seasonal Decline is Stalled Pump prices have climbed higher as compared to the recent weeks, even though many states have switched over to winter blend gasoline and there remain abundant crude oil supplies. The national average price for regular unleaded gasoline moved higher each of the past seven days reaching today’s average of $2.22 per gallon. Today’s average price is two cents more than one week ago and two cents more than one month ago. Despite the slight rise in pump prices, drivers continue to experience yearover-year savings with today’s average price about 7 cents per gallon less than the same date last year. The national average has been relatively flat since September 3, and drivers in 21 states are paying less at the pump week-over-week. While national prices have been steady, pump prices in some regions have moved dramatically over this same period, largely due to disruptions on the Colonial Pipeline and refinery maintenance. As recently as last week, gas prices jumped in the Midwest as a result of scheduled and unscheduled maintenance at BP’s Whiting refinery impacting supply in the region. Drivers may continue to see pump prices wobble higher or lower in the next few weeks as the market reacts to the OPEC production agreement, continued refinery maintenance and a possible hurricane along the East Coast. Local Prices Vermont’s current price is $2.26 per gallon, which is four cents higher than one week ago, and two cents lower than one year ago. New Hampshire’s current price is $2.15 per gallon, which is three cents higher than one week ago and two cents lower than one year ago. Maine’s current price is $2.24 per gallon, which is two cents higher than one week ago and two cents lower than one year ago. Massachusetts current price is $2.16 per gallon, which is two cents higher than one week ago and three cents lower than one year ago. students borrow textbooks in exchange for canned-food donations. At Bluefield College in Virginia, students can pay one flat, discounted fee that allows them to receive all their required textbooks before classes start. “It’s no wonder that colleges and students need to think outside the box when it comes to textbooks; they represent a staggering cost that just seems to get worse,â€? says Chris Manns of the price comparison websites CheapestTextbooks.com and TextbookRentals.com. Both free services help students locate the cheapest prices for millions of books. One study by the Student Public Interest Research Groups showed that the cost for college textbooks has risen 73 percent over the last decade – more than four times the inflation rate. “Sometimes the expenses aren’t even necessary,â€? Manns says. “For example, students might be required to buy a ‘book bundle’ with extra class materials that add to the cost. Often professors don’t even use some items in those bundles.â€? Outside of a few innovative programs, such as that textbook-in-exchange-for-fooddonation arrangement, the options for most students boil down to buying or renting. “Renting might seem the obvious choice because of the price,â€? Manns says. “But that’s not always the case. When you look a little deeper, you could find you’d be better off buying the book and selling it later.â€? He says a few factors to consider when weighing rent vs. buy include: • How soon do you want the book? Do you prefer getting your textbooks well before class starts? Then buying might be the way to go. When you rent textbooks, you need to return the book before the due date. If you rent too soon the due date will arrive before the semester ends. Hang onto the book and you’ll be charged a late fee. Most of the time, this added cost isn’t much, but it can add up if you’re really late getting the textbook back to the merchant, Manns says. • Do you like convenience? If so, then renting is probably the best option. You don’t have to worry about reselling the textbook after the class ends. Simply print a shipping label and send it back to See BOOKS page 31...

BUSINESS & FINANCE Report Identifies Ways for Seniors to Maximize Social Security In a continuation of their focus on improving retirement security, U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Claire McCaskill (D-Missouri), the Chairman and Ranking Member, recently led a hearing titled, “Maximizing Your Social Security Benefits: What You Need to Know. The hearing highlighted the importance of individuals choosing the right time to begin receiving Social Security benefits, which can affect seniors’ retirement income by tens of thousands of dollars. Retirees are entitled to claim benefits as early as age 62, but those who do so will see their annual benefits permanently reduced by nearly onethird compared to what they could have received by waiting until they’re older. In fact, few people realize that their benefits can go up by eight percent annually for each year they delay claiming benefits, up to the age of 70. For example, an average individual earning $42,000 per year and filing at age 62 would receive approximately $1,200 per month from Social Security. If this person is able to keep working until age 70, however, his or her monthly benefit could reach $2,112—an additional $912 per month. Chairman Collins and Ranking Member McCaskill have expressed concern that many Americans may be unfamiliar with this aspect of the Social Security program, leading them to make a costly mistake.

In March 2015, the two Aging Committee leaders requested that the GAO study ways in which the Social Security Administration can improve and clarify the information it provides to eligible individuals to ensure that they have a complete understanding of the factors that will affect their retirement benefits. The GAO unveiled its study for the first time at today’s hearing along with six recommendations on ways the Social Security Administration (SSA) can improve the ways it provides information to seniors. The SSA generally agreed with the GAO’s recommendations. “The decision on when to claim Social Security benefits is, for many Americans, the most important financial decision that they will ever make. Most Americans don’t realize the enormous implications of choosing one age versus another. That’s why we’re so insistent that there be accurate and complete information, said Senator Collins. “I believe SSA can do more to clarify these key points, and I look forward to seeing those recommendations implemented. “It shouldn’t take a financial professional to impart the basic message we are talking about today, said Senator McCaskill. “Every person who claims benefits must interact with SSA, so this is our last stop to inform people about the advantages of waiting. We hope SSA will see it is in all of our interests to make sure the public is fully educated on this issue. Social Security benefits

make up the largest component of retirement income for a majority of American households. Deciding when to begin receiving these benefits is one of the most important financial choices many people will ever make. While there are a number of factors seniors must consider as they approach their retirement years, including health or the physical demands of work, it is vital to ensure that seniors have accurate, clear, and consistent information they need to fully understand the Social Security rules that govern these decisions.

Health & Fitness ...COLLINS from page 20 demonstrate relentless leadership in the area of cancer-related public policy advocacy. “Cancer has taken a tremendous toll on far too many Americans and their families. As a member of both the Senate Health and Education Committee and the Senate Appropriations Committee, one of my top priorities is increasing investment in biomedical research, said Senator Collins upon receiving the award. “Against this scourge that causes so much pain and suffering, so much fear and uncertainty, and so much heartbreak, we are making progress. Together, with science, commitment, and compassion, we can and will prevail. “Senator Susan Collins has made an extraordinary difference for Mainers and the rest of the nation by being a steadfast supporter of sustaining and increasing investments in funding for the National Institutes of Health and cancer prevention and early detection, said Chris Hansen, president of ACS CAN. “Thanks to her unwavering commitment to saving more lives from cancer through public policy, Senator Susan Collins has established herself as a national leader in improving public health. Senator Collins has been a champion of cancer prevention efforts, evidenced in part by signing on as an original co-sponsor of the Removing Barriers to Colorectal Cancer Screening Act and supporting the Food and Drug Administration’s regulation of tobacco products. She also became one of the first Senate Republicans to sign on as a co-sponsor to the Palliative Care and Hospice Education and Training Act. “Senator Susan Collins’ passionate support of meaningful legislation makes a tremendous difference to those touched by cancer, said Hilary Schneider, Maine government relations director for ACS CAN. “Her leadership and ability to build bridges across party lines to increase support for legislation to improve prevention, early detection and quality of life for patients with serious illnesses is helping to save lives from cancer in Maine and across the country. The award was announced at ACS CAN’s annual Leadership Summit and Lobby Day in Washing-

ton, D.C., as more than 700 volunteers and staff from across the country convened to ask Congress to support policies that increase cancer research funding, improve patient quality of life and make colorectal cancer screenings more affordable for seniors. ACS CAN is the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate organization of the American Cancer Society, dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. ACS CAN

works to encourage lawmakers, candidates and government officials to support laws and poli-

cies that will make cancer a top national priority. ACS CAN gives ordinary people extraordi-

nary power to fight cancer. For more information, visit www. acscan.org.

Health & Fitness Maine Dental Association: Keep Young Athletes Safe with Mouthguards

Women’s Life Imaging Center is the region’s premier imaging center for women.

As the fall sports season gets underway, the Maine Dental Association would like to remind parents and young athletes about the importance of wearing a mouthguard. A properly fitted mouthguard is a key piece of athletic gear that can help maintain one’s oral health. They cushion blows that might otherwise cause broken teeth and injuries to the lips, tongue, face and jaw. The American Dental Association has taken an active stance on mouthguards since the mid1990s, as the organization has found they are the best available protective device for reducing the incidence and severity of sports-related dental injuries. They provide protection for contact sports, but also noncontact sports, such as gymnastics, baseball and skateboarding. Dentists are ready to help when one is looking for a mouthguard. They can answer specific questions and make a custom mouthguard that offers the best fit. Stock mouthguards and boil-and-bite mouthguards and also available for purchase, but be sure to look for the Amer-

ican Dental Association Seal of Acceptance before buying a mouthguard. The American Dental Association says the most effective mouthguard is tearresistant and comfortable, should fit properly in one’s mouth without restricting speech and breathing, and should be durable and easy to clean. The Maine Dental Association urges parents to talk with their dentist as their children begin the school sports season. Our organization takes our responsibility to young athletes in the state seriously. Incorporated in 1867, the Maine Dental Association is a professional membership organization of licensed dentists. The Maine Dental Association exists to improve and maintain the oral and overall health of the people of Maine, serve the dentists of Maine, collectively and individually, and represent the American Dental Association at the state level. ~ Where To Dine ~

Discovering Authenticity Beyond Bordeaux’s Marquee Estates Seven years ago, I organized my first wine dinner. I'd fallen hard for wine two years prior but still didn't know much. Sure, I was reading all the right books and magazines. But the number of wines I had tasted was still quite small. Fortunately, four close friends shared my interest in wine. So we gathered at my house to explore the wines of France. Each attendee was tasked with purchasing a $35 to $50 bottle from Champagne, Burgundy, or the Rhône Valley. I volunteered to spend $135 on a "trophy" wine from Bordeaux. The decision to spend so much on Bordeaux made sense to us. We knew that Bordeaux had dominated the global wine

marketplace for centuries. And even though we were new to wine, we could rattle off details about Bordeaux's 1855 classification of its estates. After weeks of research, I purchased a bottle of 1989 Château La Fleur-PÊtrus from a local collector. Online notes suggested the wine was drinking well. And I got a kick out of the fact that the property was a stone's throw from Château PÊtrus, one of Bordeaux's most famous estates. The wine was exceptional. And I've loved Bordeaux ever since. But I've also kept the region's wines in the box I put them in that night, assuming that every wine worth drinking carried a hefty price tag and required a decade or more in the cellar.

FALL

NIGHTLY SPECIALS

Earlier this month, I visited Bordeaux to see what else the region could offer. I learned that, contrary to perception, Bordeaux is home to countless mudon-their-boots farmers who produce affordable, authentic wines. An illustrative example was found in Cars, a village of just over 1,000 people on the right bank of the Gironde, directly opposite the renowned MÊdoc communes of Margaux, St-Julien, and Pauillac. Together with three other journalists, I visited Cars to meet with Guillaume Hubert, the sixth-generation vigneron at Château Peybonhomme-Les-Tours. Hubert has gained a small and loyal following in the United States thanks to his commitment to biodynamic farming, his hands-off approach to winemaking, and passionate support from Chambers Street Wines and Astor Wines & Spirits, two of New York's top wine shops. Upon our arrival, Hubert

emerged from his vineyard covered in dirt, wearing boots, cargo shorts, and a well-worn sweatshirt. We toured his property and tasted in his no-frills cellar, but only after greeting his parents and the family's three dogs. All Hubert's wines tasted real, without a hint of expensive oak or manipulated fruit. And all can be found for less than $25 per bottle. Another example was found in Camblanes, a small town 25 minutes south of Bordeaux, where we visited CÊcile MalliÊ Verdier at Château Brethous. Despite the imposing name, Château Brethous isn't a grand castle; it's an unassuming, onelevel farmhouse. MalliÊ Verdier's family purchased the property in 1963 and she began working there in 1998, transitioning to organic viticulture ten years later. We tasted through her lineup over a casual, outdoor lunch grilled by her husband, Thierry, over vine cuttings. These wines, too, were the real deal. The trip wasn't without reminders of why I had relegated Bordeaux to trophy status. Early in the trip, for example, we visited Château Beychevelle, a 450-year-old property that's often called the "Versailles of MÊdoc" because it boasts 11

bedrooms, 2 suites, a formal dining room, and numerous lounges. We also visited Château Gruaud-Larose, an impressive property that traces its roots to 1725. As prices and ripeness have edged upwards throughout Bordeaux, Beychevelle and Gruaud-Larose have kept both in check. So I would definitely include both on any list of my favorite producers in the region. Beychevelle and GruaudLarose make wines that are worth every penny. But luxury tastings in luxury settings weren't what I was after. I was far more interested in downhome conviviality and noseto-the-soil local producers than exclusivity and extravagance. Bordeaux might forever be defined by its marquee estates. But Guillaume Hubert and CĂŠcile MalliĂŠ Verdier demonstrate that once you remove Bordeaux's pomp and circumstance, you'll find vignerons who recognize that wine is agricultural – and know that great wines can and should be made in the vineyard. Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Adopt a kitty! So many wonderful kitties are looking for loving homes. We hope that you'll visit our adoption center at 1420 Post Road, next to the Wells Public Library, to visit our freeroaming cat rooms, befriend our felines and consider adoption. One kitty in immediate need of adoption is Mandy. She is not happy at our center because she prefers the company of people, not other kitties. This beautiful, female, Russian Blue mix is nine years of age, very sweet, loves to be petted and enjoys belly rubs. Mandy loves catnip toys and a fast game of laser mouse. But these are hard to do when other

cats are around. She will flourish as an only kitty in a quiet home and is affectionate, devoted and beautiful. Because she is a senior citizen, Safe Haven will waive her adoption fee to the right home. So please come in soon and meet Mandy. The kitties we rescued from up North are flourishing at our center awaiting adoption. Orange Julius, the orange tiger kitty we introduced you to a couple weeks ago, has an eye injury/ His filthy coat was stiff and oily when he arrived. Kathy, from Town and Country Grooming, donated a grooming for him -- and we couldn't believe how he sparkled afterward. Obviously the grooming did more than clean him up. It gave

had to move along some healthy well-adjusted kittens to make room for others coming in. Both kittens are brown tigers, each is gentle, loving, playful, and so ready for their new loving family and home. Both, will do well with all members of the family, non-aggressive home cats and respectful dogs. These kittens are looking for a family or a single person that will allow them to continue their indoor only life style so each will enjoy a long and healthy life. If you were considering adding one or possibly two adorable, sweet little smile makers to your family circle, Bob and twin sister Betty, would like to make your acquaintance. They will be available for adoption at the Sanford adoption center on Saturday, please plan on stopping by to meet these wonderful little charmers, In addition to our featured pets we still have a nice selection of young kittens, a reasonable number of teen kittens , a good number of young adult cats and a very limited number of older cats all looking to you for their forever loving home. Cat food needed! ACAR is spending a fortune on canned cat/kitten food, dry kitten/cat food and litter just to meet our day to day basic needs. We are looking to the public to help us by dropping off any of these very basic items so we may continue to meet our mission. We have drop sites at our adoption center located at 251 Country Club Road, Sanford, and our thrift store located at the 37 Market Street North Berwick.

SPORTS Weathervane Seafood Restaurants Charity Golf Tournament Grants Another Wish KITTERY The 25th Annual Weathervane Seafoods Charity Golf Tournament was held at The Oaks, on Tuesday, September 13. The money raised benefited Make-A-Wish NH and Make-AWish ME. These organizations help grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. In 2015 the event raised over $15,042.00 due to the generosity of vendors and golfers. As a result, a Wish was granted to a local New Hampshire teen who was battling cancer for the 3rd time in his short life. He wished to see the Daytona 500 and his wish was filled. His mother wrote to us and said “Derek got to meet Dale Jr. (and his Irish setter). Our Daytona trip was something that my husband and I could never have given him and it meant so much to him. In the limo ride home, Derek said ‘well I guess we’re done with the high life – back to the low life.’ We still

laugh about that! Derek passed away in April, just 8 weeks after his trip. I can’t thank Make-AWish enough for giving my son such a special gift and for giving my family memories that we will cherish forever.” Jeremy Gagner, Chief Operating Officer and grandson of Weathervane Seafoods founders Ray and Bea Gagner, commented that “Over the past 11 years we have raised well over $100,000 for Make-A-Wish. We are very happy to host a golf tournament which builds awareness for Make-A-Wish and enables deserving children to experience a special hope or dream. It is a pleasure to grant wishes to the children and families of our local communities at their greatest time of need. We couldn't have done it without the support of our employees and industry partners. I look forward to building on this success each year." Weathervane would like to thank all of our employees and

...LIBRARY from page 13 update the Library. The front door will become the primary entrance to the Library when the building project begins. The Mothers Wing Capital Campaign, named in honor of all mothers who have utilized the Library’s services over the past century to encourage children to read, is raising funds to add a new wing to the existing Library to provide much needed space for collections and programs, install an elevator for enhanced handicapped access, and update the Library’s aged infrastructure. “I’m a former librarian so

you might guess that libraries have a very special place in my heart, said Mrs. Bush in her remarks at the opening. “Libraries are the souls of communities. We meet here to socialize, discover new adventures, learn and relax, and to teach our children and grandchildren the value and joy of learning. “In this digital age, some may feel that libraries are losing their place in our community; but I believe that we need public libraries now more than ever. And I’m happy that the Graves Library is serving more patrons now than ever. Libraries are vital resources; one of the few public places available to interact with your neighbors and to enjoy the

very best of your community and the world of reading. “The Graves Library has served as an educational, social, and cultural center of our town for over a century; yet it has been over 30 years since the Library has sought community support for a Capital Campaign, added Emery. “Increased use has brought challenges in finding space to meet our growing needs. In addition, the Library is a 19th century building that requires major updating. The Mothers Wing Capital Campaign addresses these needs, including adding an elevator and replacing the Library’s aging heating and air conditioning systems. “We have worked closely

with an architect who specializes in historic structures to ensure that we preserve the character of this classic building while providing Library users with an expanded and fully updated facility.

The Library, which is listed on the National Historic Register, recently celebrated its 100th anniversary in its current location. To learn more about the Mothers Wing Capital Campaign, visit graveslibrary.org.

~ Classifieds & News ~ World Gratitude Day at Atria KENNEBUNK On World Gratitude Day, Sept. 21, Atria Kennebunk residents gathered with the York County Moms Club for face painting, arts and crafts, and an ice cream social to connect kids and seniors for a day of fun. The generations shared stories about what they are grateful for and were able to express this creatively through the arts. Atria’s signature green ‘GoGrateful’ bracelets were also given to community visitors throughout the day as a small act of kindness and to get people thinking about what they are grateful for. Leaders of the York County Moms Club, Emma Bliss, mother of 2-year old Wyatt, and Mary Delehanty, mother of Anabelle age 2 1/2 and Nora 10-months, came in to help Atria Kennebunk celebrate. Anabelle melted the hearts of all residents when she said “I’m grateful for my baby sister Nora. The mothers all agreed that “family, com-

...CLUB from page 12 also presented smaller donations to ten additional charities and non-profit organizations from the area, along with our annual gift of $1,000 to the scholarship foundation as it has done every May for decades. According to the current president, Cathy Wilson, “The Club has suffered the fate of so many social/charitable organizations. The world has changed, and far fewer women are able to donate the time and effort which is needed to make the Club successful. However, the Club has supported the importance of education throughout its history, and is glad that education will continue to be its living legacy. Founded in 1918 as a literary club, early programs reflected current and historical topics, including studies of the recent First World War. As time went by, the Club’s original mission

of self-improvement for members, changed to one of mutual friendship and community service. Financial donations were made to relief efforts during WWII, as well as to meet local needs. Over the years, the Club led the way in promoting civic improvements and took a special interest in children, funding their individual needs and high school scholarships. More recently, annual donations have gone to help local organizations and charities, supporting food banks, medical aid, fuel assistance programs, conservation, animal rescue and wildlife, senior needs, libraries, and the arts.
