“Young Frankenstein” a Raucous, Riotous Romp at the Playhouse
“Roll in the Hay” number in “Young Frankenstein” at Ogunquit Playhouse features (left to right) John Bolton, Will Burton and Hannah Cruz.
By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Writer OGUNQUIT Just in time for Halloween hijinks, “Young Frankenstein” soars onto the Ogunquit Playhouse’s Leary Pavilion stage in all its hilarious glory — and what a lusty, high-spirited, fun-filled romp it is. From the show’s start with Dr. Frederick Frankenstein warbling the tongue-twister “The Brain” to his medical students to the “Finale Ultimo” with the
entire cast, it’s non-stop laughs and sheer escape. “Young Frankenstein” got its start as a 1974 comic horror film from the brilliant minds of Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder. It starred Wilder as the crazed young physician, with a great supporting cast including Peter Boyle (the Monster), Marty Feldman (Igor), Madeline Kahn (Elizabeth), Cloris Leachman (Frau Blucher) and Teri Garr (Inga).
Survey Says This Year’s Costumes will be DIY STATEWIDE Three in four Americans plan to celebrate Halloween this year, according to Goodwill’s annual Halloween Survey. Meanwhile, many big box stores have few costumes on the racks because of international supply chain issues. This makes 2021 the best year ever to DIY a Halloween costume. “Halloween is Goodwill’s busiest season as customers embrace do-it-yourself costume and décor shopping at thrift stores,” said Rich Cantz, the President and CEO Goodwill Northern New England.

As many people plan to partake in traditional Halloween activities this year, safety concerns around COVID-19 loom over the season. A majority of Americans (73%) say overall safety concerns due to the pandemic will have some impact on their Halloween plans this year. Most say their plans will be affected a lot (32%) or somewhat (29%). Roughly two-thirds of adults indicate their Halloween plans will be impacted to some extent by concerns with unvaccinated family members, friends or neighbors (67%) and/or the inability of children ages 12 and younger to get vaccinated (65%). The survey also found that two-thirds (66%) of adults who prefer DIY costumes say they or members of their household turn to social media and websites for DIY costume ideas and inspiration. The survey also found that Halloween costumes based on pop culture trends or characters from TV, movies, video games or books are the most popular among respondents planning to dress up this year. Twenty-eight percent preferred these kinds of costumes this year, followed by iconic Halloween costumes, such as witches, ghosts, zombies or werewolves (25%), and very unique, one-of-a-kind costumes

The film, which Brooks described as his best, parodied the horror movie genre, especially the Universal Pictures 1930’s adaptations of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” and “Son of Frankenstein.” Brooks, Thomas Meehan, and choreographer Susan Stroman created the stage version in 2007, with music and lyrics by Brooks; and it ran on Broadway to mixed reviews until 2009. The Playhouse staged it in 2013, with John Bolton creating the role of young Frankenstein, a part that he re-creates with verve and gusto in the current production. The plot revolves around Dr. Frankenstein, a New York medical doctor and teacher who has dismissed his great-grandfather Victor’s assertion that he can bring the dead back to life. But, while in Transylvania to settle his departed ancestor’s estate, he gets interested in the family business — one that involves grave robbing— and brings a dead man back to life, See ROMP page 12...
