A Story of Courage and Determination
Mark Thallander
Mark Thallander, a musician who has experienced serious life challenges, plays his music at churches and halls throughout the country. (Nancy Tuttle photo)
By Nancye Tuttle Contributing Writer OGUNQUIT – Magnificent music soars from the Ogunquit Baptist Church sanctuary to the sidewalk outdoors. A passerby stops, listens and recognizes the familiar hymn. Inside, Mark Thallander sits at the pipe organ — the only one in Ogunquit — playing the keys with his right hand and tapping the pedals with his feet. A talented musician, he shares his music at churches and concert halls in Maine and Massachusetts during his summers in Ogunquit. When he returns to his winter home in Palm Springs, California, he plays in churches across the country,
as well as at venues like Carnegie Hall and St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City and the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Cal., where he was on the staff for years. Music has been Thallander’s passion since childhood, when piano and organ lessons ignited the talent that his mother had prayed for before he was born. “After I was conceived, my mother and her church organist prayed that I would be a player, he said. “And when I was in fifth grade, my parents won an organ for a month and I took lessons. I loved it, and when the organ went back, they bought me a piano. A musician from then on, he was acclaimed as one of the best church or-
ganists in the country, inspiring people with masterful playing. For the past twelve years, Mark Thallander’s story has become as inspirational as the hymns he plays in church. His story of faith, friendship and fighting back begins August 3, 2003, on a rain-soaked ride to Ogunquit from Worcester, Massachusetts, where Thallander had played at First Congregational Church. A storm erupted and Thallander, driving his friend Gary De Vaul’s car, was caught in wind and rain. “I was getting off the Wells/Ogunquit exit of the Maine Turnpike, lost See THALLANDAR page 4...

students admitted free with a sponsorship by Hannaford Supermarket. The narrated historical walks begin at the Brick Store Museum at 117 Main Street, Kennebunk, and cover a halfmile loop through Kennebunk’s Hope Cemetery, lasting approximately one hour. Costumed interpreters portray the historical figures, and share their stories of love, loss, and fate. Not too spooky, it’s a perfect activ-
ity for the whole family. Participants visit more than a dozen gravesites and learn local history through the fascinating and often tragic tales of residents from bygone eras. Featured historical characters include ill-fated sea captains, a Civil War soldier killed in battle, children lost at sea, a teenager who faced tragedy on Mount Washington, and other Kennebunk notables from the past 250 years. General Fitz-John Porter was blamed for the bloody Union defeat at Second Bull Run for 20 years. Yet in 1886, President Grover Cleveland restored him to the Army at his former rank. Amateur historian (and retired lawyer) Wayne Soini tracks the successful post-war campaign of Porter’s belated-but-key supporters, U.S. Grant and his amazingly resourceful lawyer, Joseph Choate. Court-martialed in early 1863, Union General Porter sat out the rest of the Civil War in disgrace. After the war, Porter began an epic quest for his vindication, slowly gathering allies, turning enemies into fervent champions one by one, among them General Grant and attorney Joseph Choate. Porter’s Monument in Portsmouth, NH (Porter’s birthplace) provides clues to why Porter felt justified in making no move on August 29, 1862 in response to an order delivered to him near sunset. The monument, which Porter personally had a role in designing, continues to argue in favor of his brav-
ery and loyalty to the flag. Wayne Soini recently retired after practicing law for 37 years. Always fascinated by American history, Soini returned to school for a Master’s degree in history in 2009 from the University of Massachusetts Boston. Soini researched his book on General Porter at the New York Historical Society, Massachusetts Historical Society, Rhode Island Historical Society, Gotlieb Archival Research Center at Boston University, the Suffolk County Probate Court, Library of Congress microfilm and archives and on site in Haven Park, Portsmouth, New

friends to check for updates and send words of encouragement to ailing friends. “I got through it because of my network of family and faith, said Thallander. At one point during his healing, Thallander told DeVaul that he was giving up music to work with computers. DeVaul wouldn’t hear of it. “He told me ‘God has given you the gift of music and you will continue to play, said Thallander. With DeVaul’s encouragement, about six weeks into his healing, Thallander realized, “Well, I better start playing — and it was great. The phantom pains (a natural occurrence in amputees) went away when I played. Three months after the accident, he played a duet at his father’s Celebration of Life service at the Stockton, California Baptist Church. “It was rewarding and healing, said Thallander, whose first public concert during Advent that year brought media coverage and increased his confidence. “That got the ball rolling,
he said. In spring of 2004, benefit concerts for Thallander at Lake Avenue Congregational Church and the Crystal Cathedral attracted 4,000 people, all there to hear beautiful music and share in Thallander’s healing. The non-profit Mark Thallander Foundation evolved from those concerts and has become an organization that grows faith and communities with inspirational, ecumenical music festivals and educational programs in California, Hawaii, Missouri, Maine, Massachusetts and Canada. “We thought we would do one or two festivals, but next spring’s in Maui — our 29th — will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the foundation, said Thallander. Despite his loss, he delights in inspiring people with his music and plays many summer Sundays in Maine. ~ News ~ Haller Speaks about Historical Canterbury Women SOUTH BERWICK – The last four women living at Canterbury Shaker Village, now a historic site in Canterbury, NH, are the subject of a talk by master chef James Haller at the Counting House Museum located at Main and Liberty Streets. Haller was chef at Canterbury Shaker Village from 1988 to 1991. Part of a series called “Chefs in the Counting House: Talk, Tales and Chatter from a Trio of Culinary Authors, the program will be held in the museum’s historic second floor ballroom at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 25. Admission is $10 at the door and supports the Old Berwick Historical Society’s Rally Round the Flagpole Campaign and local history programs. Haller, an internationally acclaimed chef as well as a writer and performer, was founder of the famed Blue Strawbery restaurant in Portsmouth, and past owner of the Lee Fontaine Carriage House in Memphis, Tennessee. Haller was acquainted with the last four women at Canterbury for 18 years, and learned the stories of how they were brought there as children and orphans, what they did and why they stayed. The four included Eldress Bertha, whose mother died leaving two daughters, but when her father remarried, the stepmother did not want to raise another woman’s children, so both she and her sister were sent to Canterbury. Sister Milly was taken in after her father murdered her mother when Milly was 16. Sister Ethel called herself a “pepper Shaker. Haller’s new culinary memoir, “Salt & Pepper Cooking, has been published this fall by Great Life Press, and will be available for purchase and signing at the event. The book chronicles his lifelong love affair with food through stories of his childhood experiences with family farm life and cooking in pre-World War II American Midwest, and how he came to be a chef and owner of the Blue Strawbery restaurant. House, the society will also present a talk by celebrity chef Kathy Gunst, who will discuss the rituals of preserving and passing on family recipes on November 1. That program will also begin at 2 p.m. in the Counting House, and admission is $10. Those attending all the talks are also invited to explore museum exhibits covering a range of local history topics from the early settlement of the region in the 1600s to the incorporation of South Berwick in 1814. The Counting House is a textile mill building dating to 1830, and is now the home of the Old Berwick Historical Society. For nearly half a century, a tall flagpole standing next to the museum has welcomed arrivals into the state of Maine and the town of South Berwick. The town provides American flags,
but the Old Berwick Historical Society has maintained the pole since members erected it in the late 1960s, and it now needs to be replaced. The flagpole, located on

"The Wisdom to Survive" accepts the consensus of scientists that climate change has already arrived, and asks, what is keeping us from action? The film explores how unlimited growth and greed are destroying the life support system of the planet, the social fabric of the society, and the lives of billions of people. The film features thought leaders and activists in the realms of science, economics and spirituality and discusses how we can evolve and take action in the face of climate disruption. They urge us to open ourselves to the beauty that surrounds us and get to work on ensuring that it thrives. Featured in the film are Bill McKibben, Joanna Macy, Roger Payne, Richard Heinberg,

Gus Speth, Stephanie Kaza, Nikki Cooley and Ben Falk. Tom F. Driver of the Union Theological Seminary writes: “This is a starkly prophetic film. It combines the direst of warnings with deep love of life. Better than any other film I know, it makes clear that our profitoriented growth economy has caused the climate catastrophe and cannot itself rescue us from disaster. We need new thinking and a new way of life.

The program is entitled “Chamberlain and Hayes and in his presentation Fletcher will illustrate and document the remarkably similar and nearly parallel careers of these two distinguished military men. Both men were marked by their ability, courage and fortitude. Their personalities were decidedly different. CMP Conducting Aerial Inspections
STATEWIDE – Central Maine Power Company (CMP), a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, has begun its fall inspections of its transmission lines by helicopter. The flights are an important part of the utility’s inspection program to ensure
safe, reliable delivery of power to homes and businesses throughout its service area. Each spring and fall, CMP does a visual inspection of all of its transmission rights-of-way from the air. These flights help to spot potential problems with
equipment, as well as signs of unauthorized use. “When people encroach on our rights-of-ways with heavy equipment during logging and other operations, it poses a threat to both system reliability and public safety, says CMP spokesperson Gail Rice. “We also have had problems with people using
our rights-of-way to dispose of old appliances, building materials, and cars, and even for ATV ‘mud runs.’ This unauthorized use is bad for the environment, and unfair to people who live nearby who should be able to enjoy some peace and quiet around their homes. In addition to the spring
and fall visual inspections, CMP also flies over its entire transmission system in the summer using a helicopter equipped with infrared thermal imaging equipment to detect “hot spots that might need attention. “Our lines are exposed to See CMP page 31...

The Wondertwins Come To The Dance Hall
KITTERY – On Saturday, October 24 at 7:30 p.m., The Wondertwins, (Billy and Bobby McClain) present an exclusive, one-night only performance of “To HipHop, with Love” at The Dance Hall in Kittery. This is only the second appearance by the awardwinning duo in the Boston area since their wildly successful appearances in 2014 at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, The Yard, and the Music Hall Loft. Six-time winners of Showtime at The Apollo Theater, The Wondertwins have appeared with Maurice Hines' Club Harlem and toured internationally with Bobby Brown's Don't Be Cruel in the UK, and Purple Rain's Apollonia's Since I Fell For You tour in Singapore. With the technical facility of hip hop, the sophistication of the glory days of the Cotton Club, the flash of Rat Pack era Las Vegas, and elements of vaudeville, robot, tap, and mime, The Wondertwins create a distinctive style all their own.
Former Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre executive director Judith Jamison has praised The Wondertwins as "absolutely beautiful, strong, powerful, and electricmade for Broadway" and Maurice Hines noted that the identical twins "dance in the same spirit as the great brothers of dance before them." "To Hip-Hop, with Love" is made up of three separate pieces: "Broadway to Hip-Hop," "Sounds of Movement," and "L.OV.E." With an eclectic See HIPHOP page 34...

The sale was based on reports by retailers leasing outlet center stores for the trailing 12 months ended August 30, 2015 for tenants that have occupied such stores for a minimum of 12 months. “These centers have an average age of approximately

A High School Equivalency Positively Impacts Your Life YORK COUNTY People who have a high school equivalency have more choices! Not having a high school equivalency can severely limit your choices for employment or often impact any chances of advancement. Many entry level jobs, including most McDonald’s require you to be in high school or have a high school equivalency. National unemployment rates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics report an August rate of 5.1%. While Maine’s unemployment rate is slightly below the national average at 4.5%, we are heading into the future where the job market is changing before our eyes.
This is an exciting time for job seekers. As the current workforce retires, by 2018 an estimated 196, 000 job opening will be available and approximately 115,000 will require some type of post-secondary credential. Where do you begin? If you are someone who does not have a high school diploma, earning that credential is the first step. Here in the State of Maine, it is the Department of Education’s mission to ensure all residents are provided the opportunity to a free education, and that includes adults who need to earn their high school equivalency. Contacting your adult education office is the first step. Students are assessed and then pre-
pared by trained educators who work specifically with adults to take the HiSET test. (The HiSET is the new federal exam, replacing the formerly well-known GED). Students work in either small classes or with one-on-one tutoring to help build needed skills or dust off old forgotten ones. Earning your high school diploma will positively impact your success in obtaining one of the estimated 196,000 job openings. One of the opening could be the promotion you deserve or an open door to a new
career field. For more information or a free assessment, contact Lisa A. Crothers, Director of Adult Education for the Wells-Ogunquit
Community at 646-4565 or The Kennebunks and Arundel at 985-1116. A positive change is waiting for you – make the call so we can help!

BUSINESS & FINANCE Strategies for Paying Off Credit Card Debt
Consumers faced with high credit card debt face another challenge, too: picking and choosing from various techniques, strategies and “must-do approaches to bringing balances to zero. “Paying off credit cards is an important step toward financial health, but people get hung up on the right method
for paying down debt, said Mike Sullivan, spokesperson for Take Charge America, a national nonprofit credit counseling and debt management agency. “There are many approaches, but the right strategy depends on an individual’s financial habits, personality and motivation for paying balances. lowing strategies consumers may employ to pay off their credit cards: The Snowball: This method works well for consumers who are juggling several credit cards. They pick the smallest balance, pay it off as quickly as possible, and make only minimum payments on other credit cards. The Avalanche: Instead of picking the credit card with the smallest balance, consumers attack the debt with the highest interest rate first, paying only minimums on their other cards. Since the avalanche may feel slower than the snowball, this strategy is best for consumers who can stick to a longterm goal.

it sounds – somewhere in the middle of the snowball and the avalanche. This strategy does not prescribe how to pay off debt – consumers simply pay down balances on all of their cards, all at the same time. This is best for people who feel they need to make a dent on all of their cards, even if the process is slower than the snowball or less strategic than the avalanche. The Request: Consumers paying debt on high-interest cards may succeed in simply calling their credit card company and requesting a lower rate – especially if they’re long-

The Balance-Transfer: Credit card companies flood mailboxes with balancetransfer offers, promising low interest rates for people who move old balances to a new card. While this may prove a good solution for consumers with high debt and high interest rates, it’s important to read the fine print; many balance transfer offers only provide a low interest rate for a few months, or charge a transfer fee that may offset any savings in interest. storms and hurricanes. Only about half of those surveyed had an evacuation plan or a plan for communicating with family members if they are separated. Nearly a third of people did not have an emergency kit with supplies. “Preparedness is critical when it comes to life-threatening disasters such as hurricanes,” said Larry French, Red Cross Disaster Program Manager. “It’s important that families and individuals make time to build an emergency kit, create an evacuation plan, and download the free Red Cross Emergency App to help make it through the next storm safely. Prepare before a storm hits. Hurricanes are powerful and dangerous storms that often bring heavy rain and flooding. Destructive winds can down power lines, uproot trees, and damage homes. On the coast, storm surges can travel several miles inland, destroying everything in their path. Even inland communities can experience hurricanes, often with powerful winds and widespread flooding. Some things you can do to prepare: • Pack a disaster kit Include a gallon of water per person, per day, non-perishable food, flashlight, batterypowered or hand-crank radio
(NOAA Weather Radio, if possible), first aid kit, whistle, dust masks, moist towelettes, garbage bags, and medications. Learn more at www. redcross.org/prepare. • Make a disaster plan for your family, and practice the plan • Bring inside any items that can be picked up by the wind • Fill your vehicle’s gas tank and get some extra cash • Download the free Red Cross Emergency App The app includes information on Red Cross shelters, a toolkit with a flashlight, strobe light, and alarm. Its “I’m Safe” feature tells family that you’re okay. Visit redcross.org/mobileapps. • Know the difference between hurricane threat levels A Hurricane Watch is when conditions are a threat within 48 hours. It’s then time to review your hurricane plans. Get ready to act if a warning is issued, and stay informed. A Hurricane Warning is when conditions are expected within 36 hours. It’s then time to complete your storm preparations and leave the area if directed to do so by authorities. For more information: MaineRedCross.org.

Kennebunk First Parish UU Hunger Banquet Benefits Syrian Refugees KENNEBUNK First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Kennebunk will be holding an Oxfam America Hunger Banquet at 6 p.m., Saturday, October 24. The event is sponsored by the First Parish Youth Group. Hunger banquets have attracted over 850,000 people since their inception. Proceeds go to help feed Syrian refugees in camps in Jordan and Lebanon. The amounts of food shown in the plates below are accurate representations of how food is distributed worldwide with 50 percent of the world's population having too little to eat. The Oxfam America Hunger Banquet is an interactive event that brings hunger and poverty issues to life. When guests arrive at the banquet, they draw tickets at random that assign each to a high-, middle-, or low-income tier—based on the latest statistics about poverty around the world. Each income level has a different experience. The 20 percent in the high-income tier are served a sumptuous meal;
the 30 percent in the middleincome group eat a simple meal, like rice and beans; and the 50 percent in the low-income tier help themselves to small portions of rice and water. The 50 percent represent the world population earning less than $1,032 a year. Tickets to the event are available at the door. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids, with a maximum family price of $30. Youth Group advisor Jacky Peters says, "We have all seen horrible images and been saddened by the plight of Syrians fleeing war. The evening's proceeds will go to help feed people in refugee camps in Jordan and Lebanon." Oxfam America has been
conducting Hunger Banquets since 1974 and says: "By growing our
community, we increase our power to respond to global crises, raise aware-
ness, and change the unjust laws that keep people trapped in poverty."

“When people have multiple addictions, smoking is usually the last to go, says Jantz. “It’s as if they are saying, ‘Don’t take everything from me.’ Generally, given the opportunity, people do want to quit smoking. But they don’t believe they can or don’t know how. About 46 million Americans smoke, but most wish they didn’t, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A 2010 survey showed that 70 percent of smokers in the U.S. would like to quit, and in 2012 more than 40 percent actively tried to stop.

The National Institutes of Health points to numerous reasons to end the habit. Smokers who quit lower their risk of getting various cancers, including lung cancer, and also reduce their chances of suffering from heart disease, stroke, emphysema, and other serious diseases. Figuring out a strategy for quitting involves recognizing the depths of the smoking addiction, Jantz says. A few points to understand include: • Smoking meets emotional needs as well as physical needs. “It meets a huge need for comfort,â€? he says. “So smokers need to ask themselves, ‘How do I bring comfort into my life without smoking?’â€? • Smoking is relational. Smokers get together with other people to smoke, which fuels the habit. “Once you become an exsmoker, you are no longer part of that group,â€? Jantz says. “And that’s not fun. But if smokers can begin to see the possibility of themselves as healthier, vibrant persons, then they are more inclined to make the effort.â€? • Going cold turkey doesn’t work for most people. Jantz says. “That’s a powerful addiction.â€? The American Cancer Society reports that only about 4 to 7 percent of smokers are able to stop on their own without using smoke-cessation products, yet almost all of these products use nicotine reduction therapy (NRT), which require smokers to quit cold turkey. Most smokers who have tried NRT products fail to quit multiple times. “Obviously, people can and do stop,â€? Jantz says. “Sometimes they just need the right method and approach that can free them from both the physical and emotional aspects of their addiction. Submitted by Gregory L. Jantz, Ph.D, who has nearly three decades of experience in mental health counseling and is the founder of The Center for Counseling and Health Resources near Seattle, Wash. The Center, “a place for hope,â€? provides comprehensive, coordinated care from a treatment team that addresses medical, physical, psychological, emotional, nutritional, fitness and spiritual factors involved in recovery. He is the best-selling author of more than 28 books and is a regular contributor to The Huffington Post and Psychology Today blogs. For more information: www.aplaceofhope.com.

Lectures Explore Responses To Human Hatred
YORK St. George’s Church in York Harbor is set to present a series of six monthly lectures and discussions called “Human, Hatred, and Violence: Christian, Jewish and Islamic Perspectives – and Our Hopes” beginning Sunday, October 18. These lectures will provide insights into the causes of hatred and violence that have existed for millennia, and the pervasive racial, ethnic, and religious tensions that fuel intolerance both in our country and around the world. The series kicks off this Sunday, October 18, with Holly Sargent presenting “Humans and Violence: A brief look at the biology and psychology that drive and deter violent behavior.”
Sargent will explore violence in human nature; examining biological drives for survival and dominance, as well as psychological forces behind fear, rage, and revenge. The lecture will address both triggers and deterrents of violence, while providing a context for exploration of the interrelation of violence and faith in subsequent sessions. On November 15, the Rev. James H. Gambrill will speak about “The Christian Crusades of 1095-1291: A Middle Eastern free-for-all from Europe to the Muslim-dominated Holy Land – with religious hatred aplenty and mixed motives galore.” Looking at contemporary documents, such as diaries, Papal sermons, and battle depictions from both sides of the conflicts, Mr. Gam-

brill will explore the consolidation of Muslim conquests in the Middle East and the forces of nationalism in Europe that culminated in the nine violent crusade journeys. On December 12, Barbara Diamond will discuss Karen Armstrong’s recent book, “Fields of Blood: Religion and the History of Violence,” which disputes the common secular notion that religion underlies most war and violence. Instead, Armstrong lays out the social and political trends that over his-

SPORTS SCORE BOARD
Girls’ Varsity Soccer Berwick 2, Dana 2 Wednesday, Oct. 7 The Berwick Academy Girls Varsity Soccer team earned their third tie of the season in a back and forth battle with Dana Hall. With the tie the Bulldogs remain undefeated. Dana Hall got the first goal in the 30th minute after some solid passing and a hard low shot to the corner. It seemed like the Bulldogs would go into another halftime speech down 1-0, but Caroline Starr (Rye, NH) felt otherwise. She quickly collected the ball and from distance launched the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net with under 2 minutes left in the half. The Bulldogs came out strong in the second half and started to create more chances, however it was Dana hall that would regain
the lead in the 62nd minute and the Bulldogs were again chasing the game. Julia Schaepe (Newburyport, MA) got behind the defense on a breakaway, but was tracked down by a Dana defender. Caroline Hernon (Hampton, NH) set up Starr for a good chance, but the shot was just wide. Abby Moore (Rollinsford, NH), Annie Vatcher (Kennebunk), Siobhan McDermott (North Andover, MA), and Kat Reid (Dover, NH) had some quality chances but the Bulldogs could not equalize until stoppage time when Christie Sullivan (Stratham, NH) played an amazing cross to Kenza Farid (Hampton, NH) who headed it home to tie the game at 2-2. In the closing seconds Vatcher had a late chance to pull ahead but the game came to a close. The Bulldogs are now 6-0-3 and will travel to Kents Hill on Friday 10/9.
Notice to School Athletic Directors, and Student Athletes The Weekly Sentinel invites you to email your latest sports news, including game results and notable accomplishments! Please include the name of the sport, the date of the event, venue, scores and details of the play. Send information to editor@theweeklysentinel.com. We look forward to hearing from you!
Scoring Summary: 30th minute Dana, 38th minute Starr, 62nd minute Dana, 78th minute Farid from Sullivan.
Berwick 3, Kents Hill 0 Friday, Oct. 9 The Bulldogs traveled to Kents Hill in the pouring rain, but as we pulled in the rain seemed to pass and for the most part the game went on with nothing more then a light drizzle. The Bulldogs took a while to get a rhythm and adjust to the slick field and couldn't capitalize until the 2nd half despite numerous chances in the opening half. In the 44th minute Caroline Starr (Rye, NH) crossed the ball and Siobhan McDermott (North Andover, MA) put it into the back of the net with a perfectly timed run. In the 81st minute the Bulldogs would increase the lead when Sahanah Heiderscheidt (Lee, NH) threw the ball to Caroline Starr who hammered it home for the 2nd goal of the game. Only minutes later McDermott set up Abby Moore (Rollinsford, NH) for a shot she blasted to the top corner making it 3-0 Berwick. The Bulldogs are now 7-0-3 and will travel to Marianapolis on 10/14. Scoring Summary: 44th minute McDermott from Starr, 81st minute Starr from Heiderscheidt, 83rd minute Moore from McDermott.

~ Pets ~ Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK Meet Fay, a young, small, spay female calico feline. Fay was a stray from Biddeford who broke a cellar window in someone's house to find a warm place to give birth. Fay and her kittens were surrendered to Another Chance and while all her babies have been adopted, Fay is still looking for a quiet place to relax. Fay came to the rescue very shy, but has come a long way since then. Come and visit her. In addition to Faye, we still have a good selection of kittens, a few teenage kittens, a small number of adult cats and a limited number of older adult cat also looking to you for new loving homes. If you are still looking for a dog we do have several available for your consideration. Please check out our adoptable pets at www.petfinder.com in the 03906 zip code. All vet bills will be paid by Safe Haven. If you can’t afford to buy cat food, we’ll even provide that. You provide the love, and help
WELLS Meet Piggley and Wiggley, two active young kitties who need a home together. They seem to sleep very little and play day and night. They practice their leaps and bounds to perfect their agility skills. No cosmic catnip banana stands a chance in Piggley’s mitted claws. And no turbo chaser is fast enough for little Wiggley who grasps the ball and kicks at it with her hind feet. They wrestle, they climb, and they leap like flying squirrels. We look at amazement at their crazy antics and darling romps. These precious young kitties are about five months old, with adorable black-andwhite markings and are totally bonded. Currently they live at “Scardey Cat School, at our Thrift Store, next to the Wells IGA. They were invited here to teach the shy (formerly feral) cats a few things. Like how great it feels to be petted and kissed by Teacher and her assistants. These two deserve to graduate with honors. Give Joyce a call at
here mostly all day five days a week cleaning, Denise who bottle feeds and loves our kittens everyday, Jeanie who comes in and says “I'll take care of it, Robin and her Mom who make this place sparkle, the entire Petsmart volunteers who care so much for our cats and kittens, the Petlife staff who love to see us there, Kirstin whose knowledge is invaluable, Karen Molly and Sam who help in every way and Mom who, without her support this foster home would not be what it is and to everyone else who takes the time to volunteer, sincere thanks are offered. If you would like to volunteer, please call 207-490-2855. Our “Support For Life program asks for the pledge of a $10 monthly donation. Your $10 combined with donations of others will help us meet our expenses and continue our work as a true “No Kill organization.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, Thank you so much for your newsletter. I have learned so much and appreciate your taking the time to help! Internet Explorer 9 is on my computer, but I do not use it. Firefox is my primary browser. Is there a reason to keep Internet Explorer upgraded even though I do not use it? (I have Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron desktop.) Many thanks, Patti Dear Patti, Actually, it is a good idea to keep Internet Explorer updated even if you don't use it. I have IE, Firefox and Chrome installed on my computer, and even though Chrome is my preferred browser, there are still a few things that work better in IE, and sometimes not at all other browsers. A quick
example would be recording online video using Real Times Downloader. It does not work in Chrome, but works in IE, so I use IE for that task. Another reason to keep IE updates is that some programs use the programming in IE to run. A quick example of that is a pattern drafting program I use called, Dress Shop. It depends on IE for a lot of features, so I need to keep Internet Explorer updated and running smoothly for that program. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I had a Dell rep tell my daughter that McAfee bought on line are just viruses. Is this true, as I also have McAfee on my computer? I have read your newsletter for a long time and trust your advice. Thanks, Carol

Dear Carol, No, this is not true, however, if you are not careful, any software that you purchase online could be carrying viruses. Let me explain. If you go directly to McAfee's official website at www.mcafee. com then you can be sure you are getting their real antivirus program, with no added junk. However, if you go to your favorite search engine and search for McAfee, you will get a lot of results, click on any one of them, and you will most likely be taken to a site that is pretending to be McAfee, or support for McAfee. These are not the real thing, just scammers pretending to be so that they can get your credit card information. The same is true for computer companies like Dell. If you go directly to their website, www.dell.com you will be getting information from Dell, however if you go to your favorite search engine and search for

Dell, you will get a lot of results that are just scammers pretending to represent the company so they can get to your money. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Why can't I watch videos on my computer that come in a email? It tells me to download media player is that safe to do. I am able to to watch them on my iphone and also my ipad. Just can't open and play them on my desktop computer. Thanks, Janet Dear Janet, It sounds like you don't have the necessary video codecs installed in order to play your videos. Since you haven't specified exactly what kind of video you are getting in your emails, I can't tell you the exact codec you are missing, but I can point you in the right direction. It is safe to download Windows Media Player, you just need to make sure you are downloading it directly from Microsoft, and not from any other site. Windows Media player might not be able to play every kind of video that comes in your email, so another alternative might be the open source player, VLC media Player at www.videolan. org. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I was wondering if there
is an easy way of clearing the email trash folder on an iPad. Thanks, Judy Dear Judy, There is an easy way to empty the trash folder on your iPad or iPhone email app. Here is how: 1. Open the "Mail" app on your iPad. 2. Tap on the upper-left icon in the Mail app. It might say, "Mailboxes" or in my case, it says "Gmail". 3. Tap on the email account you are using. Mine says, "Gmail", yours might say, "Yahoo" or whatever program you are using. 4. Tap on the "Trash" folder for your email account. 5. Now that you are looking at the items in the trash folder, tap on the "Edit" button located just to the right of the word, "Trash". 6. Tap on the "Delete All" icon at the bottom of the screen. 7. A larger "Delete All" button will appear. Tap on that as well. 8. In a few seconds (or longer if you have lots of messages in the deleted folder) all your messages will be gone and the "Trash" folder will be empty. Elizabeth Interested in learning more?
