Ogunquit Actress Is Coming Home, Going Places By Scott Andrews Staff Columnist OGUNQUIT Here. There. Here again. That’s the story of Jennifer Fogarty, the 27-year-old actress who plays the lead romantic role in Ogunquit Playhouse’s current production of “The Addams Family.” Soon the story could be “here, there and everywhere.” Fogarty is clearly going places. At the playhouse, most actors belong in one of two categories: Some are getting started, while others have already arrived. Fogarty represents both types. Five years ago, when she first trod the boards at Ogunquit, Fogarty was fresh out of college and just getting started in theater. After three summers at
Ogunquit, she landed important roles in regional theaters across the U.S. Then she gained further prominence playing the ingénue Wednesday on a 17-month national and international tour of “The Addams Family.”

~ News ~ What We Ate in Berwick and Beyond SOUTH BERWICK The shape of modern food habits begins to emerge in the early 1800s, including the order of the menu, and the preparation of dishes we know and love today. In a lecture sponsored by the Old Berwick Historical Society, Sandy Oliver will explore the life stories of classic Maine dishes enjoyed by Berwick residents from 1814 to 1914 like chowder, baked beans and brown bread, and some that have disappeared (or nearly) like salt fish dinner. The program will be held on Thursday, October 23, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Berwick Academy’s Jeppesen Science Center on Academy Street. Sandy Oliver has been active in food and food history for 42 years starting in 1971 at Mystic Seaport Museum, where she developed a fireplace-cooking program in an 1830s house. Her insightful and perceptive intelligence and charismatic sense of humor make a personal connection with her interests and her audiences. She is the author of a number of food history books including Saltwater Foodways: New Englanders and Their Foods at Sea and Ashore in
the 19th Century, The Saltwater Foodways Companion Cookbook, and The Food of Colonial and Federal America. With Kathleen Curtain, Sandy co-authored Giving Thanks: Thanksgiving History and Recipes from Pilgrims to Pumpkin Pie. Sandy is also a freelance food writer with the column Tastebuds appearing each Wednesday in the Bangor Daily News, and regular columns in Maine Boats, Homes, and
Harbors magazine, DownEast, and The Working Waterfront. Her newest book, Maine Home Cooking was published in September 2012. In addition to her writing, she often speaks to historical organizations and food professional groups around the country, organizes historical dinners, and conducts classes and workshops in food history. The public is invited, and volunteers will serve refreshments. Donations are welcome.
This lecture is one of many 2014 Bicentennial events to be organized by the Old Berwick Historical Society and other community organizations.

If you are serious about learning to balance your blood sugar naturally without the use of drugs or surgery, this is a must attend event for you! “My name is Stephen Berry and I live in Barrington, NH. I went to Dr. Donatello’s diabetes workshop in late August and I knew right then and there I needed to follow his protocols. It is now the middle of October and over the last ten weeks, my hemoglobin A1C went from 11.5 to 5.4 and I have lost 52 pounds. I am also off all my insulin medication. And best of all, I can now climb stairs without feeling like I was going to pass out. If you have diabetes and are looking to change your life, I would highly suggest you go to this workshop.”

“In just six weeks I am off insulin after being on it for 8 years. My sugar numbers were always in the 200s and now they are closer to 100, and best of all, I feel way more energetic as the weight is finally coming off. If you have diabetes you must come see Dr. Donatello speak.” ~ Isabel Stevens, Dover, NH “My blood sugar hovered around 350-400 and my A1C was over 9. The medications were going up and up. Under Dr. Donatello’s care the sugar dropped to normal ranges and I reduced all my diabetes medications.” ~ Tim Macnetee, Kittery, Maine

which is vitally important for fish, shellfish and migrating waterfowl. The Trust hopes the property will serve as the centerpiece for future conservation efforts, possibly with hiking access all the way from downtown. Great Works is poised to conserve several farms in North Berwick as well. The 100-acre property was donated to Great Works Regional Land Trust in 2011 by Vera Spohr. When she purchased the property, it had been approved for a suburban subdivision but taken over by the bank. She bought the threatened property and her later gift of it to Great Works ensures that it is saved for future generations. Spohr retains a lot and small cabin on the original property. Board member Todd Hoffman of North Berwick worked with Spohr on the conservation project. “We are honored to award a lifetime membership to Vera, whose vision and dedication have been so generously demonstrated. She saw the need to save open spaces for future generations. That she wishes to share it now so others can also appreciate and love this special place, is a generous gift indeed,” said Hoffman. Sparrow Workshop with Louis Bevier WELLS Want to learn more about the many sparrow species that breed in and migrate through Maine? Want to know the difference between a sparrow and a finch? How can one bird be both a bunting and a sparrow? Why are longspurs no longer sparrows? Often skulking, elusive, and confusingly similar, sparrows can make any birder prefer fall wood-warblers. The workshop will be held on Saturday, October 25 at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm. Meet at 8 a.m. and take a short walk, then move to the Mather Auditorium for a talk on “all
things sparrow.” After a lunch break, (you’ll need to bring your own), head to Mile Rd. to try for Saltmarsh or Nelson’s Sparrows at high tide, and then continue on to Beach Plum Farm and possibly Ogunquit Beach. That is the plan for now. As part of this workshop, you will learn how to find and observe sparrows in their preferred habitat. We will learn through classroom and field time useful foraging behaviors, flight characteristics, and vocalizations helpful for identification and appreciation of Maine’s sparrows. The workshop will feature some of the rare species

that have turned up in Maine, and some that might yet so you’ll be prepared! The marsh sparrows, Le Conte’s versus Grasshopper, who was Henslow, and the tricky Spizella are some of the featured sparrows. This workshop will be led by well-known Maine birder Louis Bevier. Since the 1960s, birds have drawn him to explore most of North and South America, leading to months at sea off Alaska and California, backcountry surveys in the high Sierra, plant and bird expeditions to several countries, and many other adventures. He has worked as a tour guide for Field Guides, as an editor for The Birds of North America series, as Associate Editor for the journal North American Birds, and is Chair of the Maine Bird Records Committee. Sponsored by York County Audubon. The cost is $10/ person, payable by check or cash at the workshop. But space is limited and advance reservations are required at our website: yorkcountyaudubon.org.

Wells Rotary Club Volunteers in Fight Against Hunger WELLS The Maine Mall was the setting on September 27 for a Food-Packing Event on behalf of District 7780 of Rotary International. The event was spearheaded by the Sebago Lake Rotary Club and assisted by the Rotary clubs in Wells, Falmouth, South Portland/Cape Elizabeth, Saco Bay and Seacoast Portsmouth. The volunteers packed 31,272 meals with the food already on its way to Food Pantries across southern Maine. The food was purchased in bulk from a $5,000 contribution which turned into 20,000 meals. The additional meals were brought in by End Hunger NE, knowing that Rotarians are a group that get things done and get things done they did! Members of the Wells Rotary Club in attendance at the Event delivered packed meals (6 cartons, enough for 36 meals for a family of 4 in each) to the St. Mary’s Food Pantry in Wells.

Open Enrollment: A Great Time to Review Your Retirement Plan If you work for a medium-tolarge company, you may now be entering the “open enrollment” period — that time of year when you get to make changes to your employee benefits. Your benefit package can be a big piece of your overall financial picture, so you’ll want to make the right moves — especially in regard to your employer-sponsored retirement plan. Take a close look at your 401(k) or similar plan, such as a 403(b), if you work for a school or a nonprofit group, or a 457(b), if you work for a state or local government. And keep these possible moves in mind:
Boost your contributions. If your salary has gone up over the past year, or if you just think you have a reasonable “cushion” in your disposable income, boost your contributions to your employer-sponsored retirement plan. Even if you can’t afford to contribute the maximum amount — which, in 2014, is $17,500, or $23,000 if you’re 50 or older — to your 401(k) or similar plan, try to put in as much as you can afford. Remember the key benefits of these plans: Your money can grow tax deferred and your contributions can lower your annual taxable income. (Keep in mind, though, that you will eventually be taxed on your withdrawals, and any with-
drawals you take before you reach 59½ may be subject to a 10 percent IRS penalty.) Don’t miss the match. Try to take full advantage of your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. Your employer may match 50 percent of employee contributions, up to the first 6 percent of your salary. So if you’re only deferring 3 percent of your income, you are missing half the match — or leaving money “on the table,” so to speak. Rebalance, if necessary. You may be able to change the investment mix of your employer-sponsored retirement plan throughout the year, but you might find that the best time to review your holdings and rebalance your portfolio is during open enrollment, when you’re reviewing all your ben-
efit options. Try to determine if your investment allocation is still appropriate for your needs or if you own some investments that are chronically underperforming. And always keep in mind the need to diversify. Try to spread your money around a variety of investments within your plan, with the exact percentages of each investment depending on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. As you near retirement, you may need to lower your overall risk level, but even at this stage of your career, you’ll benefit from a diversified portfolio. While diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss, it can help reduce the impact of volatility on your holdings. Review your beneficiary designations. Your retirement plan’s
beneficiary designations are important and, in fact, can even supersede the wishes you express in your will. So if you experience changes in your life — marriage, remarriage, a birth or an adoption, etc. — you’ll need to update the beneficiary designations on your 401(k) or similar plan. It won’t take much time today — and it can help prevent a lot of trouble tomorrow. You work hard for the money that goes into your retirement plan —so make sure your plan is working hard for you. the CA$H Coalitions across the state, which bring together partners to help guide lowincome families toward ways to save money, take advantage of income tax refunds, use matched savings programs, such as Family Development Accounts and college savings plans, and participate in financial literacy classes. “Even though most people are working harder than ever, far too many parents with lowincomes still encounter serious obstacles that prevent them from saving for the future,” said Tony Cipollone, President and CEO of the John T. Gorman Foundation. “We believe that helping parents provide and care for their families is crucial to our state’s success.” The financial position of Maine residents is more precarious than people in many neighboring states, as well as in the nation. Per capita income in Maine is the lowest in New England, and nearly 15 percent of Maine households worry about food security. Understanding how to make the best use of one’s money is a positive step forward towards setting achievable goals, planning for the future, and enhancing selfsufficiency. CA$H sites help families improve their financial status. One way the sites work is by helping families take advantage of such tax benefits as the Earned Income Tax Credit -an income tax refund that has been shown to be an effective tool in reducing childhood poverty. Trained tax preparers and counselors advise families how to save and invest their money, setting up a nest egg that can be used to weather a life crisis and save for short and long-term financial goals such as postsecondary education, business ownership, and home ownership. “This partnership and grant award from the John T. That will benefit their children and their children’s children. That is certainly true in the case of New Sharon’s Amy Scholl, a graduate of Women, Work, and Community and a beneficiary of asset-building help from the Western Maine CA$H site. Scholl graduated from college with a young baby and a mountain of debt. “It felt like I would never be free from the financial situation I had gotten myself into, I was at rock bottom, Scholl said. Only 3 percent of schools nationwide received this recognition. Sullivan’s favorite lunch is pizza paired with a salad from the salad bar but the pizza isn’t your typical fast food, delivery pizza, it’s made with a whole grain crust, low-fat cheese, topped with veggies and portioned for a student. “The food is just really, really good”, says Sullivan. “There’s a lunchroom revolution in Maine. We don’t hear enough about nutrition advances in schools; if parents knew about these changes I’m sure they’d give school lunch a second chance” says Heidi Kessler Let’s Go! Senior Program Manager and School Nutrition Specialist. A recent study conducted by Tuft’s University found school lunch to be healthier than the food in children’s lunchboxes. School cafeterias are limiting sugar, sodium, fat and calories while many of the lunches brought from home contain packaged foods, sugary beverages and desserts, and more calories. Cafeterias statewide provide whole grains, lean protein, low-fat milk, fruits and veggies, source local ingredients and deliver choices for children all while requiring that they walk away with at least one fruit or veggie. “We don’t stop there, walking away with a fruit or veggie is just the first step. To improve consumption of those fruits and veggies we implement Smarter Lunchroom techniques to guide smarter choices.” says Tyler Goodwin, Nutrition Services Director for the Wells Ogunquit Community School District. All Let’s Go! school cafeterias take part in the Smarter Lunchroom movement, introducing simple, low and no-cost changes specifically designed to help kids make better choices. Of the cafeterias surveyed by Let’s Go! in 2013, 77 percent of them display at least one fresh fruit option near each register and 96 percent have a salad bar in the main flow of traffic. Even better, they offer unlimited fruits and veggies, which have been rebranded with exciting names kids love. Health & Fitness The Relationship Between Vitamin D And Cancer Vitamin D has long been a friend to men, women and children. Obtained primarily through exposure of the skin to sunlight but also procured in certain foods and dietary supplements, vitamin D helps the body use calcium and phosphorous to improve bone health and build healthy teeth. But as valuable as vitamin D can be to your bones and teeth, it also may play a role in reducing your risk for certain cancers. The National Cancer Institute notes that many studies have suggested that higher intake of vitamin D or higher levels of vitamin D in the blood are associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer. To understand this relationship, it helps to first understand vitamin D. What is vitamin D? A group of fat-soluble prohormones, vitamin D comes in two forms that are important to humans. Vitamin D2, also known as ergocalciferol, is made naturally by plants, while vitamin D3 is produced naturally by the body when it is exposed to ultraviolet radiation in sunlight. How are vitamin D levels in the body measured? When vitamins D2 and D3 enter the body, they are converted to 25-hydroxyvitamin D in the liver before traveling through the blood to the kidneys, where the 25-hydroxyvitamin D is modified to calcitrol, which is the active form of vitamin D in the body. When a person has their vitamin D levels measured, the most accurate method of doing so is to determine the amount
of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in their blood. How do I get enough vitamin D? The NCI notes that most people already get at least some of the vitamin D they need through sunlight exposure. In addition to sunlight exposure, many people get plenty of vitamin D from their diets, including foods such as fatty fish, fish liver oil and eggs that naturally contain vitamin D. But foods fortified with vitamin D, such as milk, juices and breakfast cereals, also ensure many people get adequate amounts of vitamin D. For many people, the combination of exposure to sunlight and diet is enough to produce strong bones and healthy teeth and reduce risk for colorectal cancer. But people who are diagnosed with low levels of vitamin D can look to supplements to ensure they’re getting enough. Recommended daily intake guidelines vary depending on age, but those interested in learning these guidelines can find them on the Institute of Medicine website at www.iom.edu. Why study the connection between vitamin D and cancer? While studies have previously linked higher levels of vitamin D with reduced risk of colorectal cancer, research is ongoing to determine if vitamin D plays a role in lowering a person’s risk of developing other types of cancers as well. Driving this research are early studies that discovered incidence and death rates for certain cancers were lower among people living in southern latitudes than those living in northern latitudes.
That’s a significant distinction, as levels of sunlight exposure, which is a chief source of vitamin D, are relatively high in southern latitudes and considerably higher in such areas than in northern latitudes. Studies are ongoing into this particular link and if vitamin D is, in fact, behind the lower cancer incidence and death rates. Another reason to study the connection is that experimental studies conducted on cancer cells and tumors in mice found that vitamin D may play a role in slowing or preventing the development of cancer.

Improve The Nutritional Value Of Candied Apples Homemade candied apples are a fixture come Halloween. Sweet, delectable and very easy to make, these apples are a staple at parties and may even be distributed to trick-ortreaters. As anyone who has bit into a sticky-sweet candied
apple can attest, although delicious, these apples are not exactly a healthy snack. Yet, with a few, easy modifications, it’s possible to improve the nutritional value of candied apples. With ingredients like caramel, marshmallow, chocolate
fudge, and sugar, it’s easy to see how candied apples do not embody a healthy treat, despite an apple being underneath all those candy adornments. Try these ideas to increase the nutritional value of this beloved treat. • Make your own caramel using condensed milk, brown sugar and butter. By controlling the ingredients, you can avoid extra sugar and any additives in commercially sold caramel toppings. • Use honey for the outer coating of the apple. Then roll it in chopped almonds or granola. • Coat apples with dark chocolate, which contains less sugar than milk chocolate and is packed with antioxidants. Sprinkle with dried cranberries and chopped walnuts. • Substitute actual cinnamon for melted cinnamon candies in recipes. Mix powdered cinnamon with a light corn
Traditional candied apple recipes are full of sugar. Experiment with more nutritious ingredients to create healthier apples that still boast a lot of flavor.
syrup and then dip the apples to coat. • Swirl homemade raspberry jam with an all-natural peanut butter and spread it on the apples for a gourmet take on peanut butter and jelly. • Hazelnut spreads are all the rage right now. Use your favorite chocolate hazelnut spread

on the apples and sprinkle with granola for crunch. • Drizzle the apples with your sugary concoction rather than dipping them to cut down on the sugar. This still provides much flavor but does so without all of the sugar. • Dip apples in melted cheese, like brie or gouda. Sprinkle with bacon bits for a sweet and salty combination. Experiment with your own flavors. Making your own candied apples, rather than purchasing them from stores, enables you to control the ingredients and how much actual candy goes into the recipe. inconsistent. While numerous studies have concluded that vitamin D reduces a person’s risk for colorectal cancer, even that widely acknowledged link remains open to debate. For example, a 2006 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that healthy women who took vitamin D and calcium supplements for an average of seven years did not have a reduced incidence of colorectal cancer, though some scientists questioned if that study was extensive enough to support its ultimate conclusion. ‘Gruesome Playground Injuries’ At Stage Force
KITTERY – The 2014-2015 Main Stage opens the season with ‘Gruesome Playground Injuries’ by Rajiv Joseph. This darkly humorous drama was an overwhelming audience favorite in Stage Force’s Winter 2014 Play Reading Series and features Seacoast actors Ryan Salvato and Jessica Miller. The play runs Fridays through Sundays, October 17, 18, 24, and 25 at 8 p.m., and October 19 and 26 at 3 p.m., at the STAR Theatre at the Kittery Community Center, 120 Rogers Road, Kittery. Tickets are $25 and available at www.kitterycommunitycenter. org and at Kittery Community Center (603-436-2400). The production is made possible with support from Bob’s Clam Hut and Robert’s Maine Grill, Kittery; Pickwick’s Mer-
cantile, Portsmouth, NH; and D. Pratt Framer, Kittery. The Stage Force season is supported by Cava Restaurant of Portsmouth, NH.
With ‘Gruesome Playground Injuries’, Rajiv Joseph, author of the Pulitzer Prizewinning ‘Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo’, has penned a contemporary love story that personifies the expression “love hurts.” Doug, an accident-prone daredevil, and Kayleen, a caustic masochist, navigate friendship, love and the squishy parts that lie in between. They first meet in a school nurse’s office, and over a 30-year relationship, build a complex connection through a lifetime of injuries, both physical and emotional. Gruesome Playground Injuries combines an unusual structure – the eight scenes leap back and forth in time with Joseph’s specific instruction to producers that the characters’ costume and makeup changes take place as much is possible in
Gabriella, she worked backstage with the technical crew and later appeared in the ensemble with “All Shook Up.” The following two summers she worked backstage, starred in “Pinkalicious” and had an ensemble role in “The Sound of Music.” After leaving Ogunquit, Fogarty landed major roles in “Rent,” “Hairspray,” “Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Little Shop of Horrors.” Her biggest part – and the one that lasted the longest and paid the most – is Wednesday in the national and international tour of “The Addams Family.” It’s a curious role – diametrically opposed to her real-life self. Sometimes dubbed “the princess of pain,” Wednesday is dour, stiff and seldom smiles – a role that gives Fogarty ample scope to demonstrate her prowess and range as an actress. After two years of acting across the U.S. and Asia, returning to Ogunquit was a homecoming of sorts for Fogarty. She
profusely thanks some of the people who guided her through her first three summers in professional theater: executive artistic director Brad Kenney, children’s theater administrator Jean Benda, associate producer Jayme McDaniel and marketing director Cheryl Farley. “They gave me the opportunity to get a head start in the game,” says Fogarty. When “The Addams Family” closes on October 26, Fogarty will head to Japan, where she has been cast in another top role. Southern Maine audiences yearn for her return in another summer engagement. And Fogarty reciprocates the feeling. “I consider Ogunquit home,” she adds. “When I drove into town, and saw my picture on the billboard, I had to stop and really choked up. I never thought that it would really happen.” Fogarty has come a long way in a few short years, and there’s every expectation that she’ll continue to go places.
Seacoast actors Ryan Salvato and Jessica Miller will perform in ‘Gruesome Playground Injuries’ (David J. Murray, ClearEyePhoto.com)
...FOGARTY from page 20 the New York Times, Fogarty is clearly a rising star of musical theater. A native of greater Boston, Fogarty never aspired to a career as an actress, instead majoring in communications at Curry College. Her thespian interests were evident when she took courses in music and theater and served as general manager of the college troupe. Shortly before graduating, she saw an audition notice for “High School Musical,” a 2009 production at Ogunquit Playhouse, and decided to give it a try. She was cast as Gabriella, the lead female character, and within weeks of graduation Fogarty was professionally performing this choice ingénue role. Fogarty totally immersed herself in theater that summer in Ogunquit. In addition to playing

Acclaimed Folk Duo to Perform WEST KENNEBUNK The well-known and acclaimed duo of Susie Burke and David Surette will bring their signature brand of traditional and contemporary folk music to West Kennebunk on Sunday, October 19, at 3 p.m. full view of the audience. Opening night, Oct. 17, includes a special treat for theatre-goers: ‘Gruesome Delights & Enchanting Elixirs,’ a Halloween-themed post-show party featuring wine, pastries by Lil’s Café and chocolates by Lindt, and the opportunity to mingle with the cast of Gruesome and other Stage Force artists. Tickets are $46.
at the West Kennebunk United Methodist Church, 160 Alfred Road in West Kennebunk, as part of the “Concerts in West K!” series. Together since 1988, Burke and Surette have made a name for themselves as one of the finest acts on the lively New England folk scene. Their music features Burke’s stunning and heartfelt vocal style, and Surette’s fluid instrumental work on guitar, mandolin, and bouzouki. Admission by donation, suggested at $15 for adults and $10 for youth and seniors. A special suggested family rate of $35 for parents with children is also available.

~ News ~ York Art Association and Mt. Agamenticus Team Up YORK The York Art Association (YAA) and the Mt. Agamenticus to the Sea Conservation Initiative (MtA2C) have teamed up to offer opportunities for local outdoor photographers to show their work this Fall. “The vast undeveloped open space and varied landscapes in the Mt. A. region are an outdoor photographer’s playground” said Tom Gilmore, a local photographer and cochair for the “The Great Conserved Outdoors” juried photography show opening at the YAA in November. In partnership with this effort, MtA2C is sponsoring the “Through Your Eyes” photography contest which invites photographers to submit their best
two photos taken in the region in each of three categories: People on the Land, Wildlife and Plants and Scenery. In addition to cash and other prizes, winning photos and other entries to the photo contest will be unveiled at the YAA show opening reception on November 7 and on display during the month-long show at the YAA Gallery on Rt. 1A in York Harbor.
Both the YAA show and MtA2C contest encourage photographers to explore the many conservation areas around southern York County to capture these special places and the people enjoying them on film. “This is a wonderful time of year for both outdoor fun and photography. We hope the contest and show will inspire photographers and others to get outside to enjoy the region’s trails and nature preserves” commented Karen Young, MtA2C Coordinator. “As I travel through the region, my eye catches all sorts of beautiful scenes” added Tom Gilmore. Armature and professional photographers are encouraged to enter both the YAA juried show and the MtA2C “Through Your

Edward Roy Durham, 39 WELLS – Edward Roy Durham, “Bull D II” passed away at his home on October 7, his 39th birthday. He was born October 7, 1975 in Sanford, a son of Edward Durham, Jr. and Micheline (Stevens) Durham Coulson. Edward graduated from Wells High School in 1993 and Maine Central Institute, and went on to Maine Maritime Academy. He fought a long battle with psoriatic arthritis and peripheral neuropathy with substantial pain – but he always kept going. Edward loved his family and friends with such a big heart and will always be remembered for his bear hugs and offers of help. He was well known for his love of football, baseball and wrestling, when his Dad started coaching. He was a star in the Wells School Hall of Fame. His playing days ended when he lost his dad. Edward’s love for fishing started in Perkins Cove in Ogunquit and ended in the notorious Bering Sea of Alaska, when the ship he was on sunk. Everyone was saved except one. He came home and never went again. He was also an avid hunter, looking forward to this hunting season. Edward was predeceased by his father, Edward “Bull” Durham, Jr., by his sisters, Shannon Durham (2013) and Angela Stone McCarthy (2014); and by his grandparents, Roy and Louise Stevens, who all died in the past two years. He is survived by his mother and step-father, Micheline and Ernest Coulson; his big brother, Stephen Stone and his wife Becky, his sister Marcy Mayo and her husband
Bruce; nieces Bethany Stone, Nicole Mayo and Cassandra Durham; nephews Stephen Stone and Joshua Mayo; great niece Summer Marie Durham, all of Wells; one step-sister and 3 stepbrothers. Sorry to say there won’t be a Bull III! Rest in peace my sweet baby boy! There are no calling hours. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2014 from noon to 3 p.m. at the York Elks Lodge, 1704 U.S. Route 1, Cape Neddick. During the Celebration of Life, a Remembrance Service will be held at 1 p.m. Anyone is welcome to share a story or memory. I would love to hear from Ed’s friends that I don’t know. Rosebud is a lovely little brown and white tiger who’s playful and full of spirit. In our care, they’ve become good friends. Each seeks out the other for comfort, naps and fun. Because they’re so tightly bonded, they must be adopted together in a quiet home with someone who loves cats and will give them lots of tender love and affection.

He loves playing with stuffed toys and will entertain himself for quite some time tossing one around. He loves getting attention from his people, though he can be a little “mouthy” when over stimulated. It’s just his way of showing affection and playing with his people. Banner hasn’t yet mastered all of his obedience skills, so he would be a great candidate for an obedience class like

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK – A Found Adventurous Kitty This kitty was just rescued from a drain pipe; hence the name D.P. This kitty is someone’s most beloved pet and needs your help to be reunited with its family. Description of D.P: Black, Medlong haired, green eyes, large framed, friendly, adult cat. This kitty comes from Berwick somewhere near Ireland Avenue close to Aroma Joe’s Coffee Shop. The Berwick Fire Department dispatched a rescue crew to extract the distressed cat from the drain pipe. Once freed, D.P. was too stressed to move around so a concerned citizen took kitty home for the evening. If you live in Berwick, near Ireland Avenue, and/ or recognize D.P. maybe a friend’s or neighbor’s kitty, or maybe your own, D.P. would like to be reunit-
ed with family and home. Please contact our Sanford adoption center at 207-490-2855 for information. ACAR has a bus load of loving kittens/Teenagers/Adult cats that would like to get new loving homes. This story is preempting our own furry little clients because we do believe that D.P. can get back home immediately with our reader assistance. We are still in desperate need of canned and dry cat, and kitten foods. With so many mouths to feed and the cost of pet foods rising, we ask graciously for your help! Goodale Selected As ‘Clerk Of The Works’ For Wells High School Renovation WELLS – Earlier this summer, the Wells-Ogunquit CSD School Committee approved the hiring of Brad Goodale of Cape Neddick to fill the role of Clerk of the Works, a critical and multifaceted position that will oversee the District’s 26.85 million renovation project at Wells High School. The project is slated to begin in August with a planned completion date of September 1, 2016. “Brad is perfect for this very important position,” commented WOCSD Superintendent Ellen Schneider. “He comes to us with years of experience as a Clerk of the Works for many projects including several school facilities. Brad is a local person. He knows the community and has an exemplary reputation for being diligent, thorough and knowledgeable.” Goodale, who has overseen various construction projects for York Hospital in the past 10 years, views his new role as one of making certain that the Dis-
trict and taxpayers receive the best value for the high school project. “That means that I make sure that the general contractor and sub-contractors build this building according to plans and specs,” said Goodale in an interview. As Clerk of the Works, Goodale will work closely with the project’s architect, Lavallee Brensinger Architects, and the District’s officials and Building Committee. According to Goodale, there will be many types of con-
tractors involved including electrical, mechanical and plumbing, to name a few. He believes that as many as 20 contractors will eventually work on the project. On August 5th, the WOCSD School Committee selected Arthur C. Dudley Contractor • Builder, Inc. of Standish to be the project’s general contractor. Goodale not only has experience with the strict constraints (involving cleanliness and patient privacy) of hospital construction but with school construction. Prior to working as a Construction Specialist (or Owners Representative) for York Hospital he oversaw several school construction projects in communities such as York and Yarmouth and in the Oyster River Cooperative School District in New Hampshire. Throughout the renovation and additions to Wells High School, the school will remain open at its current location. A formal ground breaking ceremony will be scheduled for late September or early October.

Hal and Kathi Nelson make 100th Visit to Captain Lord Mansion
Hal and Kathi Nelson at Captain Lord Mansion during their 100th visit in October, 2014.
KENNEBUNKPORT “I feel like I own the place, it feels like home here,” said Hal Nelson on his 100th visit to the Captain Lord Mansion. “I come here to relax and rejuvenate.” Hal and Kathi Nelson, of Beverly Mass., first came to the Captain Lord Mansion in June of 1983. They have now been married 40 years, and this is their special place. “There’s something so special about the Captain Lord Mansion, you immediately feel uplifted when you enter, and you truly relax because it feels like home. The Inn is not overly done up, every room is authentic, real and everyone here is genuinely special,” said Kathi Nelson. “The bond begins over breakfast,” said Hal, “Over conservations at the breakfast table, with delicious food, we have made many friends from all over.” In fact, the Nelsons recently attended a wedding in Maine for the daughter of fellow inn guests they have become close friends with. Kathi said, “We have been to many B&Bs. Other inns just aren’t the same. Some are very lavish, you feel like you can’t touch anything. Rick and Bev go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and welcome. It’s not pretentious.” The Nelsons have stayed in every room but two, Kathi’s favorite room currently is Callender, previously Dana. “When we first came here 30 years ago, there were no locks, no clocks, no TV or phone, now every room is spectacular and the baths are so luxurious.” “I love the shopping in Kennebunkport, Hal likes to walk to the Bush’s, said Kathi. His favorite season is summer, “Summer in Maine is peak, there is nothing like sitting in the shade of the chestnut tree in front of the Inn, it is rejuvenating,” said Hal. Kathi loves fall and Christmas Prelude best. “The Captain Lord is just so
beautifully decorated for Prelude, Currier and Ives decorations adorn the Inn and the town. We see the same people here every year, we say someone has to die for you to get in to the Mansion during Prelude.” The Nelsons love of the inn is obvious and infectious. They know all of the staff by name. “The cleanliness of the Inn is like no other. It is impeccable.” says Hal. Kathi reserves their next stay at Captain Lord a year in advance, already reserved for next summer and fall, “We love this place. We want to be sure we get in and we get the room we want, although I don’t care as long as we are here.” Rick Litchfield, Innkeeper with his wife Bev Davis for 36 years, said “Hal and Kathi are like family and friends to us and our Mansion staff. They consider our two daughters Dana and Stacia as surrogate nieces, they watched them grow up here at the Inn, Hal and Kathi attended our daughter’s wedding.” The Captain Lord has an industry-leading Frequent Guest Program, visitors receive an honorary plaque in the Inn’s Memory Garden on their 10th visit. Hal and Kathi Nelson will be honored for their 100th visit on October 4, innkeepers Rick Litchfield and Bev Davis will name the Captain Lord Mansion “Memory Garden” Fountain for them with an engraved plaque, and host a private dinner party at their home with several couples the Nelsons have met at the inn over the years. The Captain Lord Mansion, 6 Pleasant Street in Kennebunkport celebrated 200 years this past June, built in 1812 and completed in 1814. Rick Litchfield and Bev Davis have been innkeepers since June 1978, 36 years. For more information, visit www.CaptainLord.com or call 207-967-3141.

SCORE BOARD GIRLS SOCCER
Berwick Academy NEWTON, MA – Oct. 10
The Ber wick Academy girls’ soccer team traveled to Newton Country Day and came home with a 1-0 victory. The Bulldogs started strong, keeping the ball in the offensive half for the opening eight minutes of the match, creating chances. The best chance came when Julia Schaepe of Newburyport, Mass., got in on a breakaway, but the goalkeeper came up with the save. In the ninth minute a counter at tack by New ton could have changed the momentum had goalkeeper Sam Montagno of Exeter, N.H., not made a game -changing point blank breakaway save. Berwick maintained the momentum creating chances, but it wasn’t until the 23rd minute that it got on the board when senior captain Parker Johnson of Kittery Point played a great ball to Kenza Farid pf Hampton, N.H., who dribbled and tucked the ball into the lower left corner. Berwick had more chances to increase its lead, the best coming in the 33rd minute when Brooke Downey of Eliot took a free kick and scored, but did not wait for the whistle after asking for 10 yards. On the retake the keeper made the save. Sam Montagno made a big save off a cross with less than two minutes in the half to preserve the lead going into half time. Most of the second half was back and forth with neither team able to capitalize. In the 64th minute Schaepe broke behind the defense again but was tackled hard by a defender and had to leave the game due to injury. The team rallied behind their teammate and battled for the win in the closing 16 minutes. Montagno earned her sixth shutout of the season with the win and Farid got her second goal of the season and first game winner. The Bulldogs were 6-2-1 and faced Pingree Wednesday, 10/15, in South Hamilton, Mass.
SOUTH BERWICK – Oct. 8
The Bulldogs faced off against Marianapolis for the first time and came away with a 4-4 draw in a non-league match. In the fourth minute Kat Reid of Dover, N.H., got the Bulldogs on the board when Caroline Hernon of Hampton, N.H., flicked the ball on from Maddie Balas, of Rye, N.H., and Kat Reid tucked the ball into the corner. In the sixth minute Marianapolis equalized the count. In the 14th minute Berwick regained the lead when Parker Johnson of Kittery Point, played a great
through ball to Schaepe who slotted the ball past the Marianapolis goalkeeper. The lead lasted a mere 30 seconds before Marianapolis equalized again. Schaepe scored her second goal of the game in the 16th minute off a pass from Siobahn McDermott of North Andover, Mass. Marianapolis equalized for a third time in the 24th minute Berwick continued the attack just before the half as Maddie Balas carried the ball up the field beating two defenders and blasting a shot into the back of the net to give the Bulldogs the lead again. Marianapolis came out strong in the second half and equalized off a free kick that was headed into the net in the 50th minute. The remaining 30 minutes provided both teams opportunities to take the lead, but neither team could capitalize Christina Grassie of Somersworth, N.H., did a great job marking Marinapolis’s top striker for the entire 80 minutes. Berwick goalkeeper Montagno made a game saving point blank breakaway save in the 74th minute that preserved the tie for the Bulldogs.
Marshwood High School PORTLAND – Oct. 13
The Hawks traveled to Deering High School and came away with a hard-fought 2-1 Western Maine Class A victory. Marshwood’s goals were scored by Korinne Bohunsky, assisted by Reagan Nichols, and Marin Smith, assisted by Hannah Fife Ewka Varney scored Deering’s goal unassisted.

YORK What do you think gardeners like to do after planting and caring for their flowers and shrubs? Take pictures of them of course! pictures. Clemons suggested that it is best to know your camera and its capabilities as well as the subject of the photograph. What is it that is attractive about the flower? Is it the simplicity of graceful lines or subtle variations of color? For a more complex flower, try zooming in to focus on the detail rather than entire flower for a bigger impact. Unless you want the subject backlit, avoid a bright sunny day and she noted that too much light can wash out the detail. Clemons likes to move around the subject, taking pictures from many angles. When photographing a mass of flowers, she likes to focus in on the one that stands out above the rest. For more information, go to kathleenclemons.com.

Coastal Public Access Guide Available The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s Maine Coastal Program announced that all three volumes of its Maine Coastal Public Access Guide are now available for online purchase by coastal enthusiasts. The guidebooks provide descriptions for more than 700 sites along Maine’s 5,300-mile coastline, including geographic coordinates, amenities, facilities, parking and directions. The series is comprised of three volumes: Southern Region (South Berwick to Freeport), Midcoast Region (Brunswick to Hampden), and Downeast Region (Bangor to Calais). “Coastal lands and waters and recreational boating play a major role in Maine’s economy,” said Governor Paul R. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, My Dell laptop has a CD drive with a slot instead of a drawer that slides out, so there is no button to eject the disk on the side of the computer. Instead, I have always used the eject key on my keyboard. That key no longer seems to work, and I need to get a disk out of my drive. Help! How do I get it out? I am running Windows 7. Thanks, Lisa Dear Lisa, I can’t tell you how to fix the keyboard button (the computer must have come with special software for that) but I can tell you how to eject the disk in your drive. 1. Click on the “Start” button, then click on “Computer”. 2. Find your CD drive in
the list of drives. 3. Right-click on the CD drive icon, and click, “Eject” in the context menu that appears. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I bought a new computer that had a trial version of the latest MS Word. After the trial period, I decided I preferred Word 7, I uninstalled the latest version of Word, then installed Word 7 which didn’t require an Activation Code. I’ve done this before when I upgraded my computers. Now when I try to save a document in Word 7, I get a message asking for an Activation Code. Is there any way around this? Thanks, Ed Dear Ed,
NACE Computer Club at NOBLE High School
Every version of Word or any Microsoft Office program for that matter requires a product key for activation. Most of the time, you type in that product key when you install the program. If you did type in the product key, you should be able to just let the program activate over the Internet without typing in any additional information. If you didn’t type in the product key when you installed Word, then you will have to locate the product key and type it in before you activate. It is a 25 digit key made up of letters and numbers. You need that product key, there is no way around it. When you purchase any part of Microsoft office, what you are really purchasing is the product key, so make sure you always have that written down and stored with your disk. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Thank you for being such

a Godsend over the years. You have helped me so much. My grandson-in-law recently replaced my computer with XP operating system to one with Windows 7 Home Premium. He downloaded Open Office on it. I had lots of Excel files on my old computer. He showed me how to save items in the Open Office spreadsheet program in Excel format, but it is still not 100 percent compatible; some of the info in the cells that is formatted to wrap is not spaced correctly in the spreadsheet program. A friend of mine uninstalled Open Office and used my original discs from my old computer to install Microsoft Word 2003 and Excel on the Windows 7 operating system so that I could proceed with work that had to be done. Since support has ended for XP and Office 2003, am I any better off at this point than I was with my old computer. I am so frus-

trated ñ I hope you can advise me. Thanks so much, Jean Dear Jean, Yes, you are much better off using Windows 7, regardless of which office program you are using. The Windows operating system is the part of the computer that provides security and protects you from the dangers online. Your office program deals with documents, which have far less potential for infection. Just add a good internet security program, and you should be all set. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, What type of UPS will I need to buy if I have 6 desktop PCs that need to run even just for 5 minutes? Thanks, Minoz Dear Minoz, You would need more information in order to determine the output needed from a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply), but I would suggest that you plan on putting no more than 2 computers on one UPS. APC, a leading UPS company has a great tool on their website at: www. apc.com/tools/ups_selector/ where you can enter your equipment and the amount of time you need to run your computers and find the best USP for you. Hopefully that will help. Elizabeth For more information, visit www.askthecomputerlady.com.
