Local Builder Assists Seacoast Family with Accessible Addition YORK – A local builder has taken on a second pro bono home accessibility project, to help another family of a severely disabled child on the Seacoast. This comes immediately following completion of his work on his first project. Jason Lajeunesse, owner of JDL Building & Remodeling of New England in Greenland, is now making an accessible home addition project feasible for the Chumsae family of York. By donating his own time as a general contractor, and assembling a team of subcontractors and vendors pledging to donate their labor and materials, the Chumsaes’ BARN (“Bring Accessible Rooms Now”) Project kicks off

Miles Chumsae and his family will have the benefit of an accessible home thanks to builder Jason Lajeunesse and his team

this week. Less than two months ago, Lajeunesse completed a similar home modification for

the Bowie family of Berwick (bowiehouse.wordpress.com). “The need for an affordably accessible home is real for families like ours, with a loved one who relies on us for everything,” said Michelle Chumsae, mother of Miles, an eight-year-old who requires total care and battles catastrophic epilepsy of childhood and brittle bones. “We love our 1770 York home, and just want to be able to stay here to care for our son. As Miles has grown, the safety issues both for him and for us as his caregivers have become more challenging, and more urgent.” “This connection to the Chumsaes, like the Bowies, is a door for me to provide community service in a way that

Berwick’s First Public Trail to Open BERWICK – During recent years and even further back, it has “taken a village,” so to speak, to help Great Works Regional Land Trust establish the town of Berwick’s first public trail at Grant’s Meadow in the Beaver Dam Heath area. On Sunday, Oct.27 at 1 p.m.,

Great Works is inviting residents, Town of Berwick officials, Eagle Scouts and other visitors to celebrate completion of the trail and opening of a new parking area at the Grant’s Meadow preserve. It is located at Diamond Hill Road/ Old Sanford Road along the Berwick/North Berwick line. “We hope many people will join us for the celebration when we once again thank the Bryans, other contributors, the town of Berwick, and Eagle Scout James Rothforte. Together, they have created a nice spot for enjoying nature,” said local resident Michael Wright. A lifelong Berwick resident, Wright managed the Grant’s Meadow Project for Great Works

Regional Land Trust as a Board member. Among the contributors who helped make the trail a reality, Bill and Carolyn Bryan will be there in spirit from their retirement home out of state. In 2012, they completed a bargain sale to Great Works for 28-acre Grant’s Meadow. The Bryans had previously donated an abutting 113acre parcel. The lands had passed down to Carolyn from her family, and an ancestor, Joshua Grant, hayed nearby fields in the 1800s. The town donated another twoacre parcel as well as a donation towards the bargain sale purchase. See TRAIL page 7...

aligns with my profession,” said Lajeunesse. “My wonderful wife Holly is a special education teacher who has taught our family sensitivity and awareness about disability. We have two healthy young boys ourselves, who are already practicing service to others. Our family feels deep gratitude for what we have, and for the fact that we can help.” At presstime, Lajeunesse has assembled a BARN Project roster that includes: JDL Building & Remodeling, Casella Inc./ Blow Brothers of Old Orchard Beach, Edwards Concrete & Excavation, Shipyard Waste

Solutions, Hertz Equipment, Industrial Landscape, Dirt Pro/ Dube Plus, R Pepin & Sons Concrete, Eldredge Lumber, Atlantic Spray Foam, Scott MacDonald Tile, Creative Masonry, Shea Concrete, Exeter Lumber and Jack Rodie Fine Woodworking. Lajeunesse met Miles and his family at their friends the Bowies’ celebration of the completion of their home modification for son Aidan. There, Lajeunesse learned of the similarities between Aidan and Miles, and of the Chumsaes’ longstanding See BUILDER page 5...

By Ethan Bukowiec Staff Writer NORTH BERWICK – Eleven year-old Alyviah Paquette is a busy young lady. Between school, homework, gymnastics and play rehearsal, she rarely has time to herself. But the North Berwick native always finds the time to join the Pease Greeters in greeting and sending off members of the United States military at Portsmouth International Airport at Pease in Portsmouth, N.H. Alyviah first became involved with the Pease Greeters in August, when her Grammy

Joyce asked her if she would like to join in attending a greeting at Portsmouth International Airport. Paquette was hooked from the beginning, and she has not missed a week since. “I was a little nervous at first because I didn’t know what to expect, but it was amazing,” says Alyviah as she recalls her first few greetings at Pease. “I felt so happy seeing their faces.” It wasn’t long before Alyviah was able to convince her mother, Brina Paquette, into attending the greetings with her.
