Students Partner in Goat Island Green Energy Project By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Writer KENNEBUNK Goat Island has pending energy problems. The underground cable that brings power to the scenic lighthouse and historic keeper’s home on the island off of Cape Porpoise is beginning to break. But the problems won’t persist if kids from Kennebunk High School and University of New England in Biddeford have their way. This fall, KHS and UNE students are partnering in a pilot program to study alternative energy sources — tidal,

solar and wind — that they hope will eventually result in Goat Island going off the power grid and sustaining itself with green energy. They are enrolled in Gulf of Maine Studies, a new problembased course, taught at KHS by science teacher Melissa Luetje and at UNE by environmental studies professor Pam Morgan. The cooperative effort also involves Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, which owns the island, and the Gulf of Maine Institute, which is helping fund the project.

Nearly 40 students are taking the hands-on class and the KHS students, all seniors, can take it for college credit. Twenty-eight are doing so. Students visited the island several times this fall to collect tidal, wind and solar data using instruments built at UNE. In November, the KHS students will meet their UNE counterparts on the Biddeford campus to analyze data and share information. Students will also particiSee GREEN page 4...

Tender Loving Quilters Craft Comfort WELLS Grieving over the loss of anyone who was once part of your life, can be a long and complex process. There are stages one passes through that can take days, weeks, months or even years. For some, the pain never goes away completely and events such as debilitating diseases, violent deaths or suicides can test individual beliefs no matter how strong one’s faith might be. It is not uncommon to “fall to pieces” while trying to put the pieces of your life back together. And so it is with quilting. Quilting is a process of binding together many different pieces, to create a thing of beauty. It takes

time, patience, and some creative effort. A quilt can be purely decorative or functional to keep you warm. There are keepsake quilts that have been passed down through the generations that to some are priceless. The quilt I started as a young bride, is still not finished after 32+ years! But so much came together for me, and touched my heart, when I was presented a quilt made by the ladies who call themselves Tender Loving Quilters. Their mission is to create bereavement quilts. Led by a petite “powerhouse” of a woman, Carol Varano, they gather each week in Wells, to create a variety of quilts,

Architectural Legacy of Local Franco-Americans SOUTH BERWICK On Thursday, October 25, historian Peter Michaud will give a lecture about the architectural impact of French Canadian immigration over three generations in New Hampshire and Maine. They will also conduct community forums to discuss the changes and learn about legal regulations. Efforts started last winter, said Morgan, who serves on the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust board and reached out to the Gulf of Maine Institute, which engages students and teachers in conservation projects. “The Trust came up with the idea since its underground cable to Goat Island is leaking and the energy keeps cutting in and out. Replacing it is expensive. So before the cable goes out, we’re trying to figure out how much energy they really need and what sources will work, said Morgan. Getting kids on board to help solve the problem is a winwin for all. “Kids love environmental studies — it’s real world and they are interested in it. When you do actual science in the community where you live and make a difference, it feeds the soul, said Luetje, who is teaching two sections since so many

students signed up for the class. Students love working on finding a solution. “The best part is how interactive the project is — it enables us to get out in the environment and make a change, said KHS student Meg Noble. KHS student Hayley King said the project is “eye-opening and gives us a new perspective on this coastal community that we are a part of. It’s giving us real world knowledge and the opportunity to make positive changes in the environment. The actual research has been “helpful and interesting and gives us the ability to do something real, said KHS student Eli Richardson. Their teachers are excited, too. “The project gives students more confidence in problem solving. We hope it becomes a model for other project-based, collaborative classes, said Morgan. “We won’t have a solution by the end of the year, so the project will continue, noted Luetje. “It’s a small change, but it’s helping to get Goat Island off grid and stop contributing to carbon emissions and climate change. And that is meaningful.

On the Judiciary Committee, Reps. Brad Moulton, Charlie Priest, and Mike Beaulieu, and Senators Dick Woodbury and Cynthia Dill all demonstrated leadership, providing critical 3&1 .06-50/ support for a substitute to the original bill. Known as the Moulton-Priest amendment and later the Majority Report, the substitute offered a balanced approach to addressing landowner concerns regarding property devaluation. Sen. Tom Saviello and Rep. Bob Duchesne also provided valuable input.

Rep. Russell Black demonstrated leadership within the Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (ACF) Committee as the only Republican objecting to several provisions from the study report that would weaken LURC’s ability to conserve Maine’s

Reps. Bob Duchesne, Meaghan Maloney, Brad Moulton, Megan Rochelo, Charlie Priest, Kim Monaghan-Derrig, Ed Mazurek, and Chuck Kruger delivered floor speeches in opposition to the Minority Report which threatened to freeze the passage of any future environmental law or regulation. Meredith Strang Burgess, Dave Richardson, Brad Moulton, Mike Beaulieu, and Dennis Keschl – voted against it in roll call #323 (See Legislative Scores p. 6-11).

Dear Representative Foley, On behalf of the thousands of children and adults with autism, intellectual, and other disabilities that Waban provides essential services to each year and our 450 dedicated, committed, and passionate staff, I wanted to recognize and thank you for your years of efforts to ensure that these critically needed service receive the essential funding that they need. This year, one of your many accomplishments was in supporting the effort to forge the consensus necessary to support increasing the wages of thousands of Direct Support Professionals across the state from the sub-minimum wage level of $9.17 per hour. Your efforts have been instrumental in providing a fair wage for this key work sector group of employees and addressing the state-wide work force crisis that threatened the ongoing viability of these life-supporting services.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Horror Stories Blended With Humor On Stage at WJHS WELLS For their fall play production, Wells Junior High School students will be presenting “Horror 101, Failing Can be Deadly, a collection of five hauntingly bizarre tales written by Steven Stack from October 25 through October 27. Despite its somewhat grim title, this production turns out to be a comedy behind a horror facade in five situational vignettes. According to promotional material, this collection of scenes promises to “keep you laughing as you keep your eyes covered. Featuring over thirty 6th through 8th grade performers all under the direction of Josie Perkins (director) and Lauren Rivera (assistant director), Horror 101 is real entertainment. “The kids really like this genre, said Rivera. “They get involved, they’re taking it on. She added, “It has some laugh out loud moments with a little bit of spookiness. Rivera offered a glimpse into one of the tales where students become locked in a haunted house. Although Scooby Doo won’t be making a guest appearance, Rivera says “you will feel like you have a mystery to solve. As with past productions directed by Perkins, the first curtain opening for this play will find both cast and crew having accomplished many aspects of theater production including stage management, make-up, costumes, set design, acting, lights and sound. In addition, Team Perkins and Rivera believe their multiaged drama students, will have gained self-confidence and added new connections and relationships with one another in rehearsing for this play. They will have taken risks and thought outside the box in order to bring their show to life. The curtain will open to three performances, Thursday, October 25 and Friday, October

26 at 7 p.m. and on Saturday October 27 for a matinee at 1 p.m. in the Ward Gymnasium at WJHS located on Route 1 in Wells. Tickets for all shows are available at the door for $5. Refreshments and snacks will be available for purchase at intermission. For more information, call 207-646-5142.

Rarely Shown ‘Faust’ Adaptation At Leavitt Theatre

OGUNQUIT It’s been a novel, a stage play, and an opera. So when movies first appeared a century ago, it was only a matter of time before they tackled ‘Faust,’ the tale of a man who consigns his soul to the devil to obtain power in the present.

At the height of the silent era, German director F.W. Murnau created a cinematic version of ‘Faust’ filled with stunning images that maintain their power to astonish. See for yourself with ‘Faust’ (1926), the original silent film adaptation of the

classic legend, to be shown on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Leavitt Theatre, 259 Main St. Route 1, Ogunquit, Maine. Admission is $10 per person, general seating. In screening F.W. Murnau’s version of ‘Faust,’ the Leavitt aims to recreate all essential elements of silent film experience: high quality prints shown on a large screen, with live music and an audience. “These films caused people to fall in love with the movies for a very good reason,” said Jeff Rapsis, who will improvise a musical score during the screening. “They were unique experiences, and if you can recreate the conditions under which they were shown, they have a great deal of life in them. “Though they’re the ancestors of today’s movies, silent film is a very different art form than what you see at the multiplex today, so it’s worth checking out as something totally different,” Rapsis said. Rapsis performs on a digital synthesizer that reproduces

the texture of the full orchestra and creates a traditional “movie score” sound. For more information, visit www.leavittheatre.com or call (207) 646-3123. For more about the music, visit www.jeffrapsis.com. Photo to right: A scene from F.W. Murnau’s ‘Faust,’ to be shown at the Leavitt Theatre.

Health & Fitness Local Law Enforcement Taking Part in National Drug Take Back Day STATEWIDE Many regional law enforcement agencies are participating in the 13th annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day in efforts to help the public safely dispose of expired, unused and unwanted prescription medicine. The event, sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration nationwide, is October 27, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at a variety of locations in Seacoast New Hampshire and

Southern Maine. Acting United States Attorney John J. Farley encouraged the public in the drug take back day in a statement recently: “As our state continues to battle with an epidemic of opioid overdoses, we must acknowledge that many individuals start on the path toward addiction through the misuse of prescription drugs. Often, this can start when unneeded prescription drugs are used for recreational purposes,” he stated. “That in-

itial experimentation sadly can lead to opioid addiction and, in far too many cases, untimely deaths.” Michael J. Ferguson, the agent in charge of DEA’s New England Division, said in the release, “Many Americans are not aware that medicines which languish in home cabinets are highly vulnerable to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisoning

and overdoses due to the illegal use of these drugs. Please take the time to clean out your medicine cabinet and make your home safe from drug theft and abuse.” According to the release, a previous take back day in October netted 731,269 pounds — almost 366 tons — of medication to DEA at nearly 5,200 collection sites nationwide. Over the life of the program, the public has turned in 7.1 million pounds,

Learn About Plant-Based Eating KENNEBUNK On Tuesday, October 23 at 6:30 p.m., presenter Joy Watts (pictured) will discuss the benefits of a plant-based diet. Watts is a resident of Kennebunk, pursuing her passions for wellness and natural healing through her education at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. She also works under Dr. Tony Lebro at A Lebro Center for Well Being, located in Kittery. Her strong beliefs in the benefits of plant-based eating are a culmination of her care for both the planet and

healthy living. Joy finds delight in cooking for her friends and family, as well as exploring and creating new and fun recipes! She looks forward to spreading awareness of the beauty of sourcing our food from the earth, what this lifestyle can do for your well being, and holding space for an engaging discussion. This program is free, wheelchair accessible and will take place at the Kennebunk Free Library located at 112 Main Street in Kennebunk. For more information please call 207-9852173 or email kfl@kennebunk. lib.me.us.

Prepare Now To Avoid Dry, Cracked Winter Skin Winter weather brings harsh conditions that can wreak havoc on skin. Come winter, winds pick up, temperatures plummet and humidity levels in the air can drop. These factors create a recipe for sapping skin of its natural oils and vibrancy. Even the most well-maintained skin can be impacted by winter air, and the other changes the season brings forth. Taking the initiative ahead of winter’s arrival can help people salvage the appearance of their skin. • Start exfoliating. Skin’s radiance can be dulled by a buildup of dead skin cells. These cells also can clog follicles, leading to breakouts. Regular exfoliation one to three times per week can assist with the removal of dead skin cells. Ridding the outer layer of skin of unnecessary debris can also help skincare products penetrate more readily. • Choose a thick moisturizer. It may be necessary to ramp up moisturizing products to combat with dry, winter air.

Look for products that contain shea butter, olive oil, jojoba oil, or cocoa butter. They’ll help retain moisture and protect the skin against the wind and cold. • Turn down the heat. While it’s important to stay warm, bundle up rather than cranking the heat. Avoid especially hot water in the shower as well. Hot water can strip the skin of its natural moisture. Therefore, be sure to take warm showers instead of boiling hot ones. • Invest in a hydrator. According to the experts at Glo Skin Beauty, hydrators are lighter than moisturizers, allowing them to penetrate further into the skin. • Use sunscreen. Do not deviate from daily sunscreen use. Even though conditions seem less sunny, skin still needs to be protected from harmful UV rays. • Wear gloves to protect hands. Frequent hand washing and exposure to cold temperatures can impact the skin on hands. Protect them with warm See SKIN page 19...

Natural Ways To Fight Fall Allergies As the days become shorter and the weather cools down, a new crop of allergy symptoms can arise, turning the autumn

season into one marked by sneezing, scratchy throats and itchy eyes. Medications can alleviate such symptoms, but allergy sufferers may want to investigate some natural ways to beat allergies. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, ragweed is one of the more common triggers of autumnal allergies. Ragweed contributes to “hay fever, which is a term to describe allergic rhinitis that occurs as a symptom of ragweed pollen in the air. Ragweed releases pollen in midAugust, and it can continue to be problematic until a deep freeze arrives. Other sources of fall allergies include leaf mold and pollen that is present on fallen leaves. This gets circulated when people begin to rake or blow fallen leaves. Classroom pets and chalk dust in schools (although chalkboards are largely a thing of the

past) are other autumn allergens. The good news is that many natural remedies work just as effectively as over-thecounter medications in regard to combatting ragweed and pollen problems. Here’s how to beat the fall allergy blues. • Stay away from pollen. Stay away from pollen and prevent it from being tracked indoors. Remove shoes when walking through the door. Take off clothes worn outside and launder them promptly, showering to wash pollen off of the body. Use an air conditioner or keep windows closed when the pollen count is high. • Increase omega-3 fatty acids. It is well documented that fatty acids are good for brain health and cardiovascular well-being. But these acids also may help with allergies. A German study linked foods See ALLERGIS page 34...

Health & Fitness Mary Jordan to Raise Funds for MS Society and US Finals KENNEBUNKPORT Mary Jordan is on a quest to create a world free of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) – an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. An avid, lifelong equestrian, Jordan loves her sports of Dressage and Para Dressage; horses and riding have been her passion since age two. When she was diagnosed with MS in 2002 she learned early on, especially as a parent, that she cannot simply say “everything will be okay to her son and others. But as she always looked at the glass as “half full, she decided early on that her sport could be the conduit to show what a person with MS can do and offer hope and support to other patients and their families. For Mary, it’s personal. “MS has affected 50% of my family. I have experienced MS from every conceivable

angle... as a 5-year-old child of an MS patient caring for my quadriplegic father; as an MS patient myself; and as a parent with MS raising the next generation. MS is not an individual disease, but one that affects an entire family from a physical, spiritual, mental and financial perspective; what happens to one patient affects an entire family. MS affects more than 440,000 Americans, mostly women. I’d love your support as I prepare for this incredible experience and opportunity to change the lives of people affected by MS and fuel progress toward a world free of MS. Since her diagnosis 16 years ago, Jordan has represented the US Equestrian Team at the 2010 World Equestrian Games as a member of Team USA; was alternate for the 2012 London Paralympics; was an alternate for the 2014 Normandy World Equestrian Games in

Did you know there is a mathematical formula for figuring out how many bags of candy to purchase for trick or treaters on Halloween? There are lots of variables. Proximity of houses, destination neighborhoods, neighborhood ‘spirit”, type of candy, who is giving out candy, mini or maxi candy bars, do all trick or treaters need to be in costume to get candy, etc.. Here is the formula: Kids in neighborhood/servings per bag x (“fun” factor of your neighborhood (1-5 scale) + expected weather (1-5 scale) all divided by 2. Let’s say 100 kids live in the neighborhood and a bag candy has 20 servings. Your neighborhood is a spirited 5 but the weather is an expected 1. This would mean 100/20 x (5+1) divided by 2 results in you needing 15 bags of candy. However, Halloween is for treats, not math. An easier contemplation is

this. On a 1-5 scale, do you want to be the house on the street that runs out of candy? Probably not. Buy the candy.

Halloween Roll Cookies These roll cookies use simple ingredients and are easy to enjoy. In the spirit of Halloween, there is a trick, too. Instead of baking the cookies and frosting with colored icing for effect, add food coloring to the dough. Black food coloring gives you great looking bats and cats without having to frost or deal with coloring all over the hands and lips of those with whom you share. And you will have to share.

Ingredients: 1 ½ cups softened salted butter 2 cups sugar 4 eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract 5 cups all purpose flour 2 tsp baking powder

Directions: Cream together butter and sugar.

Add eggs and vanilla. Stir in dry ingredients, cover and chill for at least one hour. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Roll out dough on well floured surface 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Cut into shapes with any cookie cutter. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 6 to 8 minutes in preheated oven. Cool completely. lion Americans will increase 2.8 percent in 2019, the Social Security Administration announced recently. The 2.8 percent cost-ofliving adjustment (COLA) will begin with benefits payable to more than 62 million Social Security beneficiaries in January 2019. Increased payments to more than 8 million SSI beneficiaries will begin on December 31, 2018. (Note: some people receive both Social Security and SSI benefits). The Social Security Act ties the annual COLA to the increase in the Consumer Price Index as determined by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some other adjustments that take effect in January of each year are based on the increase in average wages. Based on that increase, the maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax (taxable maximum) will increase to $132,900 from $128,400. Social Security and SSI See BENEFITS page 31...

At AWS, we’re preparing to assist the animal victims of Hurricane Michael in Florida. You can immediately help by adopting a cat currently awaiting adoption. Your adoption allows us to have space for accepting cats from the affected areas. This movement of animals sets up a domino effect: you adopt a cat‌ it creates a space at AWS‌ we can accept a cat from Florida‌ leaving a space in a Florida shelter for a cat that is temporarily lost from an owner and/or animals that need a safe place to stay while an owner secures temporary housing. Be part of this domino effect and help not just the cat you adopt, but the cat we are able to

bring in from Florida AND the cat in need of temporary housing down South. Your adoption could help at least three cats. Be part of the Hurricane Michael rescue effort and bring home a new cat today! • Use eucalyptus oil. This oil is great to have in the house to help clear up sinuses and provide nasal congestion relief. Mix a small amount with coconut oil and rub onto the chest. There also is some evidence that adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil to cleansing products can help kill dust mites around the house. • Wear a mask. When doing housework or yard work, wear a mask to reduce the inhalation of specific allergens. Avoid seasonal allergies by exploring natural ways to find prevention or relief of symptoms. ~ Sports ~ Coaches Recognized for Planning Military Appreciation Night at WHS WELLS At its October 3, 2018 meeting, the Wells-Ogunquit CSD School Committee recognized members of the Wells High School varsity football coaching staff and one other for their

part in planning and organizing WHS’s annual Military Appreciation Night held during the home football game on September 28. “It was a tremendous night honoring both active and vet-

eran military members,” said Superintendent Daly. “I know a lot of effort goes into it.” He indicated that stories about this pregame program was part of two later Portland television news broadcasts.

Dear Computer Lady I have been “cleaning” folders up in my gmail account. I have several folders I no longer use and would like to delete. How can I delete an empty folder? Thank you in advance for your assistance. BG Dear BG, Removing folders in Gmail is done in the “Settings” menu. One thing to note is that Gmail uses the name, “Labels” instead of Folders, so you are actually removing a Label instead of a folder. Here are the directions: From your main Gmail window, click on the “Settings” icon in the upper-right part of the window. It looks like a gear, and when you hover your mouse over the icon, the word, “Settings” will appear. In the Settings menu, click on the “Settings” sub-menu, and

it will bring you to a settings page. Across the top, you will see links to each settings page, click on the link for “Labels”. Scroll down until you find the Labels section and find the empty label (or folder) that you wish to delete, and look in the third column (under Actions) to the right. Click “Remove” and your label will be removed. If you remove a label that has messages in it, the messages will not be deleted, they just won’t have that label attached to them any more. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, My kids insisted that the business world is going to Chrome Books and they obtained one for me. My problem is that it doesn’t have a CD or DVD player. I have a medical bracelet and I’d like to update the information on it, but I need

to use the CD and program that puts the program into Chrome Book. Is there a solution for this? Thank you, Roberta Dear Roberta, You can purchase an optical drive with a USB connection to use with your Chromebook, but before you do, you need to find out if your medical bracelet program needs windows in order to work. If the program is a Windows program, it will not run on your Chromebook, since the Chromebook only runs the chrome operating system. A Chromebook is great for email and web browsing, and you can use Google Documents online for creating and editing documents, but it does not run programs like a computer with the Windows operating system See COMPUTER page 37...

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ ...COMPUTER from page 36 does. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I hope you can help me with a problem I’m having with my Facebook. Is there a way to put pictures and articles on to it from emails that people send to me? I can’t find any good instructions on how to do it. Thank you for any help you can give! Sincerely, Ferne Dear Ferne, Depending on what email program you use, it is probably not possible to post content directly from your email account to your Facebook page. In order to put content from an email on your Facebook page, you would

need to first save that content on your computer, and then upload it to Facebook. Once you have saved your photo on your computer, just go to your Facebook page and click on “Add Photos/ Video just above where it says, “What’s on your mind?. A windows explorer window will open. This allows you to find your photo, click on it, and then click on the “Open button. Wait while your photo uploads, you can type a description while you are waiting. When the photo is ready, just click the “Post button to share it with your friends. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady,

Regarding photos. I do use Picasa but have not used it correctly and my photos are a jumble. Do you have a program in mind that will make it easy to put my photos in some kind of order? For some reason I find multiples of some of the photos! I read your comments on storing them on CD/DVDs. Thanks for that info! Jean Dear Jean, Putting your photos in order is easy if you start out with some sort of plan, and much harder the longer you go without a plan. Picasa makes it pretty easy to organize your photos, and I am not aware

of any program that makes it easier. I personally don’t use Picasa, I just use Windows Explorer and store my pictures in folders by date. For example, in my Pictures folder on my computer, I create a folder for each year. Inside each year, I have more folders broken down my month. As long as I can remember when an event occurred, I am able to find a picture for that event. If you use Picasa, not only can you organize your pictures by date, but you can also tag the pictures with the names of the people or places in the pic-

tures. That will make it easier to find photos of a certain person or a specific place. No matter what program or method you use to organize your photos, if you have a lot of them already on your computer, it is going to take A LOT of work to get them organized.
