YORK COUNTY The 13th annual Go Red For Women event for York County is scheduled for Wednesday, October 25 at The Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport. This American Heart Association (AHA) event is focused on raising awareness of cardiovascular diseases and stroke in women as well as educating attendees on how to prevent this widespread health threat. The event's 2017 Crystal Heart Honoree is Tina HewettGordon, General Manager of The Nonantum Resort. In addi-

The dinner program, emceed by Channel 8 WMTW Anchor Tracy Sabol, will feature a local guest survivor speaker. Mary Toussaint of Arundel, who was selected as a Go Red spokeswoman for Maine in 2016, will share her close call with heart disease. "I thought my achy arm

Women, please don't brush off your symptoms!" Noel Graydon, Regional Vice President, Commercial Lending, Norway Savings Bank, is the 2017 Event Chairman and has a goal to raise $50,000 with 180 attendees. Storing the harvest: With so many fruits, herbs and vegetables hitting their prime at once, it is impossible to enjoy it all before it’s gone. Be proactive with your harvesting of fresh produce and store seasonal goods properly. To store apples, inspect the fruits for cuts or bruises and use these for pies or applesauce. Apples should be stored in a cool (30-32 degrees), dry place. ~ News ~ Do This Fall Yard Work and Reap Springtime Benefits Lots of people think that their family yards need less attention in the fall, but autumn is no time to ignore your lawn and landscape. “What you do now will determine the quality of your family yard next spring and summer, said Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), the international trade association representing more than 100 power equipment, engine and utility vehicle manufacturers and suppliers. “Every gardener knows to plant bulbs in the fall, but autumn is also the time to mow, mulch, aerate, trim and patch your lawn, said Kiser. He offers the following tips to help you get your yard into top shape this fall and ready for more relaxing and fun outdoor activities next year. Keep mowing. Grass still needs regular care to stay healthy. Grass that is too high may attract lawn-damaging field mice. Shorter grass is more resistant to diseases and traps fewer falling leaves. Cutting the grass low allows more sun to reach the crown of the grass, so less leaf will turn brown in the winter. However, cutting off too much at one time can be dam-

aging, so never trim more than a third of the grass blades off in a single cutting. Put mower blades on the lowest settings for the last two cuts of the season. Aerate your lawn. Compressed soil hurts grass health. Aerating punches holes into the soil and lets oxygen, water and nutrients into a lawn. Use a walk-behind aerator or get an attachment to pull behind a riding mower. Mulch your leaves. Many mowers can mulch leaves with an attachment. Since mulching with a mower can mix grass clippings with leaf particles, these nitrogen-rich grass particles and carbon-rich leaf particles will compost more quickly. Together, they return nutrients to the soil. Trim and shore up trees

and bushes. Use trimmers, chainsaws or pole pruners to cut back trees, shrubs and plants. Make sure branches are safely trimmed back from overhead lines, and not in danger of falling on a structure in winter weather. You may need to tie or brace limbs of upright evergreens or plants to prevent them from breaking in high winds or snow. Call a professional arborist for big trees or hard to reach spots. Repair bald spots. Fall is a great time to patch bald or thin spots in a lawn. The easiest way to do this is with an all-in-one lawn repair mixture (found at most garden shops and home centers). Use a garden rake or de-thatcher to scratch loose the soil on the spot. Kiser also added it is im-

~ News ~ Seniors ‘Go Grateful’ with Second Annual World Gratitude Day Campaign KENNEBUNK Atria Senior Living residents across the U.S. and Canada embody the spirit of gratitude through their yearly Civic Engagement programs and even an entire day is dedicated to “giving back” through Atria’s #goGrateful campaign celebrated on September 21 on World Gratitude Day. Atria Kennebunk residents have been working on several outreach projects with retired teacher members; Shirley Jones, Ute Stevens, Rosemarie Smith, Sharon LeBlanc and Mariene Benoit. One program in particular is “Operation Gratitude,” which partners with Kennebunk Elementary School students for a goal to make scarves to be included in gift packages for troops to say ‘thank you to all who serve’. Atria residents successfully donated more than 20 scarves to that cause. Other charity projects included “The Teal Hat Project” which focused on making more than a dozen teal and white hats and scarves for a local chapter of this national group which helps patients with ovarian cancer. Residents and teachers also assembled knitted blocks into an afghan which was donated to a York County Chapter of “Project Linus” to be given to a child in a local emergency room. Another important group focused on the month of September in honor of World Gratitude Day was Maine Lions, “Project Recycle”. Since early September, Atria Kennebunk resident Joyce Hutchins encouraged fellow residents, staff members and guests of the community to donate their glasses for this cause. Hutchins worked with Maine’s Blindness Prevention Program for over 30 years until her retirement. She was given a Melvin Jones Fellowship by the Maine Lions which is one of the highest levels of honors from the Lions you can receive. “It is my most cherished possession. Somewhere along the way in this world, I did something right because they just don’t give this award away for nothing.” Said Hutchins. With Joyce’s consistency, a total of 32 pairs of glasses were collected along with cases and a few cell phones. The glasses will

go to the Massabesic Lions Club for a full prescription analyses and will then be shipped to third world countries to be matched with people who can benefit from those particular prescriptions. The cell phones are given as only 911 cell phones for battered women who can call the police for immediate assistance. Bob Williams, 19-year member of the Lions Club came to Atria to meet Joyce Hutchins for the first time, collect the donations and join in on Atria Kennebunk’s Gratitude Celebration

Day which included entertainment with Dave Hollis, hors’ d'oeuvres, bright colored balloons, gograteful bracelets, and an appreciation station where everyone could express what they are grateful for! Atria’s employees worked hard to create personalized letters to each resident to be placed on dining room tables for the gograteful luncheon! Atria’s #goGrateful campaign is designed to encourage public participation. Atria has created a website, GoGratefulNow.com, where shareable

images for social media posts can be downloaded and photos of expressions of gratitude can be

uploaded. Participants are asked to incorporate “#goGrateful” in social media posts with the goal of reaching 50,000 hashtag shares by the end of September.

Do you recommend this window repair software? Thank you, Bru Dear Bru, The fact that the icon just appeared on your desktop usually indicates that it is some sort of malware, but in this case a little bit of research shows that this is a legitimate program. In fact, it has been featured on several websites that I read and trust. While I have never used this program, it looks like a trusted program. It might be that someone working on your computer left it there. In this day and age, it is often hard to tell the difference between malware and legitimate software, so it is good that you are cautious. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am having a problem with my yahoo email. When I open it, it shows the current day with past days behind it. But for the last couple of days when I open my saved emails, they are not in

Make sure you have "Inbox" selected in the left column. If you use one of the "Smart Views" it will change the order of your messages. In the upper-right corner there is a sort by menu. Click the drop down list to select how you want to sort your messages. If that drop down list has a check mark in front of, "Group by conversation" you might want to click to remove that check mark and see if that fixes your problem. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ “The Redemption of Gertie Greene presented at WJHS WELLS This month, Wells Junior High School students will perform the play, “The Redemption of Gertie Greene a drama mixed with comedy written by Taryn Temple. The curtain will open to three performances, Thursday, October 26 and Friday, October 27 both at 7 p.m., and on Saturday, a matinee at 2 p.m. in the Ward Gymnasium of Wells Junior High School located on Route One in Wells. Tickets are available at the door at a cost of $5. Refreshments and snacks will be available. For details, contact WJHS at 207-646-5142. The play’s setting is a modern day junior high school, best described as a “play within a play. Most students at WJHS can easily relate to the challenges faced by the main character herself, Gertie Greene. Specifically, Gertie is a new student of the drama class and, “thanks to this school’s overheated rumor mill, she is believed by many in the school to be much more of a trouble maker and bully than she actually is. From the teachers’ viewpoint and fellow students, she is felt to perhaps be a “monster bully. But is she? This play reflects typical

adolescent dilemmas and anxieties, yet yields an important message relevant to all ages as the play’s central question is answered: “Is Gertie really what everyone calls her: a freak, strange, stupid, clumsy, and mean? As fact from fiction is separated, these students bring to light the transforming power of kindness, and the importance of standing up for people who can’t defend themselves. (Source of quote: Theatrefolk. com) The 50-minute production packs a bold and big punch to society, all by a cast of 24 per-

formers and a tech crew of six, representing grades 6th, 7th and 8th. Several actors portray multiple characters and the typical stereotype students are surely visible as in the roles of “jocks, “gossipers, and “pigs. And what would a classroom be without teachers? No worries. This show has them also portrayed along with a cameo appearance from one (or more) of the WJHS administration; so come and find out who! Josie Lynn Perkins is the play’s Director, Chris Milliken the Assistant Director and Jo-Ann Bazata the Costumer/ Production Assistant. Although a small group, both cast and crew have accomplished many aspects of

theater production including stage management, make-up, lights and sound, costumes,

set design, and acting. As with

‘Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde’ at Leavitt OGUNQUIT It was first a best-selling novel, then an immensely popular stage play. So it was just a matter of time before the movies tackled 'Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde,' Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale of a man tortured by two personalities — one thoroughly good and the other completely evil. Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde' (1920), the original silent film adaptation of Stevenson's classic story, will be shown on Saturday, October 28 at 7 p.m. at the Leavitt Theatre, 259 Main St. Route 1, Ogunquit. Admission is $10 per person, general seating. Starring iconic actor John Barrymore, the film was a huge early hit for Paramount Pictures. It helped establish the "thriller" genre and showed the potential of the movies to vividly tell disturbing and creepy stories. Dr. Jekyll, a London physician and philanthropist, becomes fascinated with the dual nature of man after the profligate Sir George Carew exposes him to temptation. When Jekyll invents a potion that separates the good from the evil in a person, he decides to live both roles and names the evil persona Mr. Hyde. Jekyll is in love with Millicent, the daughter of Sir George; meanwhile, Hyde prowls the poorer districts of London, debases and discards Theresa, a dance hall performer. Jekyll's

control over Hyde weakens gradually to the point where his alter ego resorts to murder, forcing Hyde into a showdown to save his loved ones and reign in the evil he himself has spawned. The film put Barrymore, a noted stage actor, on the cinematic map. Following 'Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde,' Barrymore would go on to be one of the biggest stars of early cinema. His handsome visage, dubbed "the great profile," was instantly recognizable to movie-goers of the time, who flocked to see Barrymore in later films such as 'Sherlock Holmes' (1922), 'Don Juan' (1926), and 'The Beloved Rogue' (1927). Stevenson's story has been re-filmed many times, including versions in 1931 and 1941, and was most recently remade in 2008 as a TV movie starring Dougray Scott. Health & Fitness Medicare Open Enrollment Now Underway STATEWIDE Medicare Open Enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7 and is the perfect opportunity each year to review your Medicare plan coverage for 2018. AARP Maine is encouraging all Mainers with Medicare coverage to compare their health and prescription drug plan options during the seven weeks of Medicare Open Enrollment. Medicare plans often change their cost-sharing and coverage benefits every year. Insurers are required to notify all their enrollees of any plan changes for the coming year before the end of September by sending them an Annual Notice of Change. AARP Maine strongly recommends that people read these notices carefully, compare their current plan with other available plans, and change to a different plan during open enrollment if it better meets their current needs. For in-person help, Mainers can call the Area Agency on Aging at 1-877-353-3771. Their staff and volunteers are fully-trained, certified SHIP counselors that can help individuals navigate Medicare and the complexity in choosing drug plans with deductibles, copays and how to address the

coverage gap (the so called the “donut hole). Changes you can make during open enrollment: Switch from traditional Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, or vice versa; Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another; Switch from one

stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan to another; Drop Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage; Join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan if you didn’t sign up when you were first eligible. For more information: www.medicare.gov/find-aplan; 1-800-633-4227.

The Maine Dental Association is reminding students and parents that during this busy back-to-school time of year, it is important to keep oral health in mind. Dental decay is the most chronic disease among children ages 6 to 19, according to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention. The National Institutes of Health estimate 42 percent of children 2 to 11 have some dental decay, and 59 percent of children 12 to 19 have some dental decay. Going back to school is a great time to incorporate healthy lifestyle changes like brushing regularly into your children’s daily routine, according to MDA Executive Board President Dr. Gary Creisher. “The good thing about getting back to school is that the children get back in a routine, Creisher said. “Allowing

The closet is operated by volunteers from Kennebunk’s Committee on Aging, which was formed in May of 2016 to address issues regarding aging in Kennebunk. The Committee has collected over 100 items in the last several months and worked with the Kennebunk Fire Rescue department to develop a process for obtaining and safely cleaning the equipment. The closet has also received support from Aging Excellence in Kennebunk and the Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Arundel Chamber of Commerce. Residents of all ages can call the volunteer phone line to borrow equipment such as crutches, wheelchairs, commodes, shower chairs and canes. There is no public physical location for the closet and all exchanges are taken place after arrangements are made via phone. “Someone may need to borrow a walker or cane after surgery, or a child may injure themselves playing sports and need crutches for a short time. We are thrilled to be able to serve all ages in our Town, said Donna Curtis-Binette, a volunteer for the loan closet. “Donations are essential to the success of the loan closet, said Martha HessPomber, a volunteer with the closet. “While we can’t accept motorized items such as hospital beds or motorized scooters, we will take just about anything else! Just give us a call and we will make arrangements for the item. To make a donation or to borrow equipment please call 207-251-3097 or visit www.kennebunkmaine.us/loancloset. For more information about the Committee on Aging contact General Assistance Administrator Karen Winton at 207985-2102, ext.1342.

~ News ~ ...YARD from page 9 He said, “You’ll also want to service and winterize your lawn mower, string trimmer, leaf blower, and other outdoor power equipment.” And, remember, most gas-fueled outdoor power equipment is warranted and designed to run on E10 (10% ethanol) fuel or less. There are fuel options available today that should not be used in your outdoor power equipment. Remember ‘look before you pump.’ And, make sure to drain the fuel tank before storing equipment for the winter.

Dispose safely of any fuel that is more than 30 days old. “Winterization is important for outdoor power equipment. When everything is growing again in the spring and you see how all of your hard fall lawn work has paid off, the last thing you want to deal with is a malfunctioning mower,” said Kiser. For information on safe fueling go to www.LookBeforeYouPump.com. For tips on outdoor power equipment safety, go to www.opei.org. Video Game Developer Visits Great Work School SOUTH BERWICK Great Works School staff and students were fortunate to have Adam Kelley, an educational video game developer, come to their school. He met with students to share information about the process of creating video games and brought examples of games he has developed. One was created for Atlanta's Aquarium to teach about marsh life. The students were able to interact with, and observe two of his games. Students asked very insightful questions during the presentation.

This informative day was an introduction for students who will be developing their own video games using “Scratch” and “Soundation” during music and art classes. The process will continue throughout the school year.

Marshwood Great Works School thanks Adam Kelley for generously sharing his time and talents and school staff members Rhonda Miller, Janice Marro and Christal Villemaire who coordinated the program.

BUSINESS & FINANCE Wells Receives Dividend Check from Municipal Officials WELLS Municipal officials are pleased to announce that the Town of Wells has received a $9,584 dividend check from the Maine Municipal Association as a result of its good loss experience and loss prevention programs. The Maine Municipal Association offers three selffunded pools for municipal and quasi-public entities in Maine: the Workers Compensation Fund formed in 1978, the Property & Casualty Pool formed in 1987 and the Unemployment Compensation Fund formed in 1978. The programs are overseen by governing boards of elected and appointed mu-

nicipal officials. Each year the boards review each program’s loss experience to determine if dividends may be paid. Patricia Kablitz, Director of Risk Management Services for MMA, said more than 77 percent of program participants received a dividend this year for their good risk management practices and loss experience. This year the Workers Compensation Fund has distributed almost $650,000 in dividends to participants and the Property and Casualty Pool has paid dividends of nearly $550,000, for total payments of just under $1.2 million returned directly to MMA members. In the twenty years the Maine Municipal Association

WELLS Apollo is ready for a nap. He drags his blue blankie across the floor at Safe Haven and pushes it into his bed. He chases toy mousies and carries them in his mouth. He’s full of doggielike charm, his striking black and white sleek coat a purrfect example of a classic tuxedo kitty. Smart, skillful, friendly and silly, Apollo has it all. He’s great with other cats. He’s a real charmer who entertains us all with his tricks and comical antics. This easygoing young fellow lives in-the-moment and makes every minute count. When he decides to take a nap, he sometimes lies on his back, feet in the air, totally relaxed. Apollo would love a happy home with friendly, active people. Inquire about him and the other wonderful Safe Haven kitties at 207-646-1611. As overnight temperatures dip into the ‘30s and the leaves begin to drop, we look into our food cupboard. Our winter reserves are too low. We’re starting our Fall Food Drive now with canned Friskies being the most urgently needed. We’ve just rescued 18 kitties from Downeast

Maine, and we’re getting calls about strays living outside who must come in. All these kitties have big appetites. They also eat more in cold weather and are very good at licking their plates clean. Please drop off food donations either at our Adoption Center, 1420 Post Road, Wells, or our thrift store next to the Wells IGA. We are looking for extra help for cat care, especially Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings from 5-6:30 p.m. Choose the night that’s most convenient. You’ll help with feeding, scooping, fluffing up blankets and medicating if you are capable and willing. You’ll get training and help on your shift, of course. It’s less than 2 hours per week. Your help would really be a blessing.

WEST KENNEBUNK Lucky is a 15-year old, sweet senior of a cat. He came to us as a stray, so we don’t know everything about his past. One look at him though and he certainly seems to have had a tough life. Since being with Animal Welfare Society he has shown himself to be a very sweet old man. He loves getting attention from people and will even sit in laps. He has the longest legs, so he was probably quite the adventurer in his youth, but these days he prefers to take things easy. He has hyperthyroidism, which does require a somewhat inexpensive daily medication, something potential adopters should be aware of. Lucky is a DDAF Senior: Through generous funding from the Doris Day Animal Foundation (DDAF, www.dorisdayanimalfoundation.org) to support senior cats, we are able to offer

John Dumont, 60 SANFORD – John Dumont, 60, formerly of Sanford, born June 24, 1957, son of Marcel and Ida (Fortier) Dumont, brother to James Dumont, passed away September 23, 2017 in Freeport. John attended Sanford Schools and was employed as a woodworker for several years at LaValley Lumber. Graveside services will be held Friday, October 20, at 11 a.m. in the St. Ignatius Cemetery, Berwick Road, Sanford. Contributions in memory of John may be made to NAMI Portland, P.O. Box 614, Portland, ME 04104 (www.nami. org/get-involved/donate). Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick. Condolences may be expressed at www.johnsonfuneralhomeme.com.

Nancy E. Smith, 67 VA NCOU V ER , BC, CANADA / CAPE NEDDICK – Nancy E. Smith went Home to be with the Lord on May 7, 2017. She was 67. Nancy was born in Massachusetts to Richard and Helen Smith, and early in her life her family moved to Cape Neddick. During this time, her mother, Helen, passed away. She became friends with her neighbor and they remained friends until her death. Nancy attended York

schools until age 15 when she went to live with her Uncle Charlie and Aunt Lelia Smith in New Brunswick, Canada. She finished high school in New Brunswick, then started moving west, first to Toronto, and then to Vancouver, where she finally settled. For many summers Nancy returned to Maine, staying with her second “mother, Myra Bassett of Ogunquit. While there, she worked at the Blue Water Inn and other businesses. At age 30 Nancy enrolled at University of British Columbia where she earned a degree in Social Work. Social Work was her passion and she had a special place in her heart for families. Over her long career, she helped countless families reach wholeness. Though she had no biological children, she loved children and was a second mother for her friend Dorlis’ three children, Sascha, Patrick, and Caitlin.

In addition to social work and children, Nancy had a passion for travel. As a young twenty-something, she traveled to Turkey. Many more countries followed, including Mexico, Canary Islands, France, Costa Rica, and several trips to Switzerland where a close friend lives. Nancy never married but she was rich in friends, many of whom gathered in Vancouver to remember and celebrate her life. Her hobbies included photography, crosswords, and watching tennis. She would often clear her schedule to watch hours of Wimbledon or the US Open. And she was a formidable Scrabble player! She had a wonderful sense of adventure and an insatiable interest in and love of people. One of her axioms was “Everyone has a story. She was loved by so many and will be greatly missed.

Both her parents and her brothers, Clark and Alan Smith, predeceased Nancy. She is survived by her stepmother, Muriel Smith of South Berwick, her half sister, Robin Savoie and her husband, William, of North Carolina; stepbrothers Bryant Currier and his wife, Christine, of York, and Ricky Currier and his wife, Kathy, of Kittery. She also has three nephews, Dean Smith of Thomaston, Chad Smith of Calais, and Michael Smith. She has cousins, Roberta Schew and her husband, Tommy of Tujunga, CA; Tommy smith and his wife, Marissa, of Burbank, CA.; Naomi Lesko of Hampton, VA; and Lelia May Caufman of Michigan. She also has grand nieces and nephews. A Gathering of Remembrance will be held on Tuesday, October 24, at 2 p.m. at Ocean View Cemetery, 1485 Post Road, Wells; 207-646-7637.

Bishop Deeley Celebrates 70th Anniversary of St. Anthony’s Franciscan Friary in Kennebunk KENNEBUNK “We are grateful for the Franciscans who maintain this monastery, said Bishop Robert P. Deeley to the assembly gathered in Kennebunk on Sunday, October 1. “Its presence

is a reminder to us of our need to care for others, particularly the poor and the marginalized, the immigrant and those who are dispossessed. Surrounded by Franciscan Friars and facing hundreds of people in a completely full St. Anthony’s Chapel, Bishop Deeley celebrated a special

morning Mass honoring the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the Lithuanian Franciscan Friars in Kennebunk. “In 1947, the Franciscans from Lithuania purchased this property, said the bishop referring to the friary located on Beach Avenue. “Fr. Justinas Vaskys had departed Lithuania at the beginning of the occupation of his homeland in 1940. He was sent to America to establish a future for the Franciscans of Lithuania. He first established himself in Pittsburgh, and then in Greene, Maine, when Bishop Joseph McCarthy welcomed him to the state. Bishop Deeley, who used

Bishop McCarthy’s crosier (a tall staff shaped like a shepherd’s crook to symbolize the bishop’s role as the shepherd of his flock) during the Mass in honor of the long relationship between the Franciscans and the Diocese of Portland, explained that Fr. Justinas’ success led to the Franciscans outgrowing their Greene home and to the purchase of the Kennebunk estate in September of 1947. The grounds of St. Anthony’s Monastery are equal parts spectacular and reverential, featuring the Shrine of St. Anthony, the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Chapel of the Stations of the Cross, and many other monuments of Lithuanian architectural art. “The monastery was begun to bring hope to a people who were deprived of their culture and their faith, said Bishop Deeley. “What happened here allowed them to celebrate their identity.

Today, it is a grace as well for the many people who come here. Like faith itself, it is light in darkness. Fr. Algirdas Malakauskas, OFM, the provincial superior, concelebrated the Mass with the bishop on Sunday. Many Franciscans, including current and past residents of the monastery, gathered for the anniversary celebration. The group included 92-year-old Bishop Paul Baltakis, who spent nearly his entire priesthood in the United States, many years spent in Kennebunk. The Franciscans also noted the special relationship between the friary and diocese that has existed since their arrival. After the Mass, a banquet was held in the Franciscan Guest House located on the property. The monastery is holding a 70th anniversary fundraiser to help pay for chapel renovations. During the season, Cousins pitched 8-0 games, batted 10 runs in and achieved a .396 batting average which turned out to be the highest among his teammates. Regarding Cousins’ award for June, Dodd commented, “Cam was a team captain and

pitched a shutout in leading Wells to a 3-0 victory in a June playoff game. He is outstanding in all facets of the game of baseball and represents Wells High School, the community and his team with class, integrity and pride. "Cam comes from a big athletic family where all the kids have excelled in sports, noted John Kreie, a former athlete at Wells High School. “Cam plays each sport with a ton of passion, pride and enthusiasm. That, along with natural talent, makes him the athlete he is today.
