Go Red Event to Honor Tina Hewett-Gordon

Tina Hewett-Gordon will receive the 2017 Crystal Heart Award at the Go Red York County event on October 25.

YORK COUNTY The 13th annual Go Red For Women event for York County is scheduled for Wednesday, October 25 at The Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport. This American Heart Association (AHA) event is focused on raising awareness of cardiovascular diseases and stroke in women as well as educating attendees on how to prevent this widespread health threat. The event's 2017 Crystal Heart Honoree is Tina HewettGordon, General Manager of The Nonantum Resort. In addi-

tion to volunteering for countless organizations, Hewett-Gordon is a strong advocate for promoting Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation training and for placing Automated External Defibrillators in hospitality locations throughout Maine. The dinner program, emceed by Channel 8 WMTW Anchor Tracy Sabol, will feature a local guest survivor speaker. Mary Toussaint of Arundel, who was selected as a Go Red spokeswoman for Maine in 2016, will share her close call with heart disease. "I thought my achy arm

was due to too much shopping," said Toussaint. "It turns out I was actually having a heart attack. Luckily, my husband urged me to go to the hospital because I had another heart attack there. Women, please don't brush off your symptoms!" Noel Graydon, Regional Vice President, Commercial Lending, Norway Savings Bank, is the 2017 Event Chairman and has a goal to raise $50,000 with 180 attendees. Registration, a silent auction and health screenings will begin at 4:30 p.m. with an educational break-out session

starting at 5:15 p.m. "Understanding the Symptoms of Heart Disease in Women", will be presented by Dr. Brandei Wingard, Medical Director of Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC) Cardiology, and is sponsored by Bangor Savings Bank. In addition, SMHC nurses will be on hand to provide blood pressure screenings and AHA volunteers will demonstrate Hands-Only CPR to any guests who wish to learn this lifesaving technique. The Siefker children, Wyatt, 2nd grade and Elizabella 3rd grade, are both at Kennebunk Elementary School and

have been a big part of the planning and execution. Elizabella will be casting her spells on the guests as the “Mean Witch� and her mother Sarah will be the “Good Witch� doling out the goodies. Savoring Our Local Fall Harvest By Jenna Mead, Staff Reporter YORK COUNTY With the summer over, it is not time to simply “weather� through fall but to embrace it. The harvests of autumn can be savored, strolled through and eventually stored away. The time of year brings out the peak freshness for more than just pumpkins and apples. The bursting colors of tress and matched in the ripeness and flavors of fall. You don’t have to do all the work to enjoy the season’s offerings. Farmers and chefs across the county are sharing in the celebration of fall with offerings only available for a limited time. To truly embrace the season take

a trip to the farm for pick your own apples, pumpkins or purchase some of the pre-harvested produce at many local farms: Chase’s Farm Located in Wells, the farm offers a farm stand rich with the latest produce coming off the farm. The stop boasts beautiful scenery and horses to take in while enjoying a fresh cup of coffee with homemade baked goods. The farm also offers hay (and eventually sleigh) rides around the farm. Open 7 days a week 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. Zach’s Farm Visit Zach’s in York for more than the harvest. This year Zach’s Corn maze is 17 acres and

is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday until Halloween. The farm also offers pick you own pumpkin, hayrides and a farm stand. The farm stand is set to be open until at least October 22. Spiller Farm Offering pick your own pumpkin, apples and assorted vegetables Spiller Farm in Wells is the perfect place to go to stock up on produce especially if you plan to store or preserve the harvest. The farm and orchard are seeing great returns this year. If you just need the produce without the time for the farm, visit the Spillers’ Farm Store, open 6am-9pm, both the farm and store are located in Wells.
