Winners Announced for Vocal Competition at Playhouse OGUNQUIT The Ogunquit Playhouse hosted the first annual New England Sings vocal competition to benefit five New England nonprofit organizations. The event was organized by former American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi and the brainchild of Pastor Anna Copeland of First Parish Congregational Church in York, Maine. Dozens of singers and songwriters throughout New England entered the competition, and 15 were selected to perform before the sold-out audience on the evening of Tuesday, October 11. went to 24-year-old Lexi James from Kittery Point, Maine who sang her original song “Brave�
which is about not letting painful experiences, such as bullying tear you down. The overall theme of the evening was about being true to one’s self. The $250 second place winner was 12 year-old Colette Haines from Durham, New Hampshire, who played the piano while rapping and singing the song “Wings� by her favorite artist Macklemore. Both winners will be featured in a CBS Boston piece to air next year. Each of the contestants received positive affirmation for their efforts from judges Ogunquit Playhouse Executive Artistic Director Brad Kenney, Kara DioGuardi and composer Tim Janis.
The host of the event was Jadd Naamani of iHeartRadio's Z107. The proceeds of the event will benefit the Ogunquit Playhouse, York County Family Fund, My Breast Cancer Support, the Enough Campaign and First Parish of York Outreach. Special Guest two-time Olympic gold medalist in Juno, Kayla Harrison attended the show. She and DioGuardi, both survivors of child sexual abuse, addressed the crowd on the need for meaningful legislation, education and awareness on the issue. Stage Neck Inn and Eldredge lumber were the presenting sponsors for the event.

She then read her latest release, “I’m New Here.� The book follows three students who are new to their American elementary school: Maria is from Guatemala, Jin is from Korea, and Fatima is from Somalia. her books are produced, about her color palate, even about her editor and publisher! During her visit with the third and fourth grade classes, Sibley O’Brien asked the students to pause and reflect on what it’s like to be new. The exercise challenged the students to take themselves out of their comfort zone and focus on what it means to be different. Get Spooked at Junkins Haunted Estate KITTERY This is a non-commercial Halloween home haunt event in New England. Over 2,000 people from all over the Northeast come each year to stroll through the old family estate located at 87 Wilson Road Kittery. Over two acres of Halloween decorations await our guests. Don't let the warm fuzzy kiddy decorations from the safety of your car fool you. If you want the candy it's a quarter mile through the haunted swamp! As you follow the luminaries towards the woods and
cross the bridge into the swamp, the darkness will surround you and the cold swamp air will chill you to your bones...oh, and by the way, they will be waiting for you! Admission is free, donations are graciously excepted. Dates for 2016: October 21–23, and October 28–31, 6-9 p.m., weather permitting. Special nonscary time for the little ones will be October 30 from 5- 6 p.m. Families are welcome and all children 18 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
