Ten Years On, It’s Still “Nice Work for Brad Kenney By Scott Andrews, Staff Columnist

Brad Kenney is currently celebrating his 10th season as the executive artistic director of the Ogunquit Playhouse, which has prospered greatly under this leadership. (Neil McMahon photo)

OGUNQUIT Ten years ago this December, Brad Kenney took the reins of the Ogunquit Playhouse as executive artistic director. As his 10th season draws to a close this weekend, the notices are in: The shows are better than ever, and the venerable playhouse is prospering. Kenney’s decade at the helm has been dominated by positives. Its production season is lengthening, attendance is rising, revenues are increasing and the playhouse’s stature in the Maine and New England arts community is higher than ever. One of the first and most noticeable changes during Kenney’s tenure has been a longer season. When “Saturday Night Fever closes this weekend, it will mark the playhouse’s longest-ever season since it was founded in 1933. Extending the schedule was one of Kenney’s first moves. Upon his arrival, the playhouse had previously committed only one show for the 2006 season: a midsum-

mer production of “Hello, Dolly! with Sally Struthers in the title role. Everything else was Kenney’s choice. Believing that the weeks after Labor Day might prove auspicious for a musical that appealed to the older, empty-nest tourists who tend to take their vacations during that period, Kenney picked “Menopause: The Musical for his final show of 2006. He scheduled it to run well past Labor Day, into the middle of September. It was a low-risk gamble, he recalled. If successful, the run could be extended. If it flopped, it could be closed quickly to cut the playhouse’s loss. Kenney’s roll of the dice paid off. “Menopause: The Musical was wildly popular with both the critics and the public, and the run was extended into October. “It was our biggest show ever in terms of tickets sold and length of run, said Kenney. “It changed the playhouse forever. What used to be a traditional summer stock calendar now begins in late spring and continues into the See KENNEY page 15...

day on October 28 affects roads, docks, piers, marshes, beaches, and other coastal settings. Winners will receive gifts contributed by Patagonia and Photo Market in Portland. Contest details are at gulfofmaine.kingtides.net. In September, an astronomical high tide coincided with a storm that delivered up to 8 inches of rain to some coastal communities in Maine and New Hampshire. “That event demonstrated the kind of flooding and erosion that may become more common as sea level rises, noted Marina Schauffler, Climate Network Coordinator for the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment. “King tides help us visualize where typical tides will likely reach in coming years, so contest images can help coastal communities assess their vulnerability and better prepare. Sea levels within the Gulf of Maine have increased more than half a foot during the past century and scientists anticipate an additional rise of two feet by the year 2100. Organizations from three states and two provinces plan the Gulf of Maine King Tides Photo Contest, which attracts participants from Cape Cod Bay in Massachusetts to Cape Sable in Nova Scotia. “This year we’re hoping students and teachers plan to participate, said Suzanne Kahn,

education director at the Wells Reserve. “The contest website has a page of educational resources on sea-level rise to help teachers link the contest to classroom curricula, Kahn added. Photos should be taken around the midday high tide on Wednesday, October 28 (see local tide charts for exact timing) and submitted online no later than November 4. In case of inclement weather, photos taken October 29 will also be accepted. Winners will be announced by November 25. The grand prize is a Fujifilm FinePix XP80 waterproof digital camera. ~ News ~ Maine Premiere of “ Most Likely to Succeed” KITTERY – Monday, October 26, at the Kittery Community Center’s Star Theatre “Most Likely To Succeed” will be shown, a documentary about the future of education. The screening begins at 6:30 p.m. Traip Academy’s Vision For the Future was adopted by the Kittery School Committee in the spring of 2012. The Vision For the Future (often referred to as the Traip Academy Redesign) has helped to chart a course for positive change not only at Traip Academy but also at Shapleigh School and Horace Mitchell School. Transitioning to a personalized delivery model is often referred to as Proficiency-Based Learning or PBL. PBL, however, is just the beginning to personalized learning, and we have made impressive inroads in other areas of the

Vision as well including online learning, early college experiences, internships, and other community-based learning opportunities. Progress is being made. What is behind the national movement for change in our schools? The answer may lie in these statistics: 53 percent of recent college graduates are either unemployed or underemployed; student engagement in school plummets as they get to higher grades — from 80 percent in elementary school to just 40 percent by the beginning of grade 9; Gallup found that college grads who had opportunities to apply classroom learning to internships, job, or ambitious projects are twice as likely to be engaged in work later in life; 65 percent of today’s elementary school students will land jobs that haven’t been invented yet;

and 45 percent of recent college graduates return home to live with their parents. In an effort to continue the discussion about schools for the future, Traip Academy will host the film documentary, Most Likely to Succeed. The 89-

minute documentary was first released at the Sundance Film Festival last spring, and we are thrilled to be hosting the Maine premier of the film here in Kittery. Here is a synopsis of the documentary: For most of the last century, entry-level jobs were plentiful, and college was an affordable

path to a fulfilling career. That world no longer exists. The feature-length documentary Most Likely to Succeed examines the history of education, revealing the growing shortcomings of our school model in today’s innovative world. Directed by ac-

~ News ~ T3 Grant Deadline Extended STATE WIDE Teens To Trails (T3) provides small grants to high school Outing Clubs that get teens active outdoors and reconnect them with nature. High school outing clubs are an effective way to engage teens in their natural world with the potential to make fun safe outdoor experiences accessible to every Maine student. Established in 2008, the T3 Grants-to-Clubs Program exists

...CHEF from page 1 Books in the fall of 2016. Those attending the talk are also invited to explore museum exhibits covering a range of local history topics from the early settlement of the region in the 1600s to the incorporation of South Berwick in 1814. The Counting House is a textile mill building dating to 1830, and is now the home of the Old Berwick Historical Society. For nearly half a century, a tall flagpole standing next to the museum has welcomed arrivals into the state of Maine and the town of South Berwick. The town provides American flags, but the Old Berwick Historical Society has maintained the pole since members erected it in the late 1960s, and it now needs to be replaced. The flagpole, located on Route 4, Main Street, is now the centerpiece of a $10,000 Rally Round the Flagpole Campaign to support the flagpole, signage and other improvements at the Counting House, and local history programs. More information on the project is available on the Old Berwick Historical Society website, and by email at info@oldberwick.org, or by calling 207384-0000.

Berwick Teacher Awarded University of Chicago Outstanding Educator Award SOUTH BERWICK – Berwick Academy faculty member John Downey was recently awarded the University of Chicago Outstanding Educator Award. The award, which is given each year to educators across the country, is a result of a written nomination from Berwick alum and Downey’s former student Jake Greenspan. According to the University of Chicago website, “For three decades, we have invited entering first-years to nominate an educator who has changed them, challenged them, or helped them along the path toward intellectual growth. Every year, the University of Chicago receives letters from hundreds of admitted students, inspired by teachers who have literally changed the course of their lives. In recognition of their profound influence, the Office of College Admissions grants the Outstanding Educator Award to teachers who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to the education and mentorship of their students. Greenspan, who is a first year student at the University of Chicago wrote, “I have had the distinguished fortune to cultivate relationships with several magnificent teachers. But of them all, John F. Downey III has left the most profound and enduring impact. For four years, Mr. Downey has been not only my Latin teacher, Golf Coach, and advisor, but also, and more meaningfully, my exemplum, chief advocate, and most valued of friends. He further wrote, “He teaches with all his heart, all his soul, and all his might - often interspersed with anacoluthic flashes of insight or an abrupt urge to illustrate his mental expatiations with a semi-crude whiteboard sketch - and in the process, has inspired me in ways I never before would have imagined. Through his guidance I gathered the confidence

to start my own club, try a new sport, and discover a passion for teaching others. The final sentence perfectly summarized John's personality and character, “Though his inner stoicism and generosity of spirit would preclude him from want of praise, it is expressly because of these qualities and so many more that praise should be conferred.

Head of School Greg Schneider commented, “John Downey has been an inspirational educator at Berwick Academy for a long period of time. Beyond his love of the classical world and his success as a coach, he has become one of our most powerful mentors for students. In addition to his genuine concern for their development, he has always focused

novel of the same name written by Harper Lee. The film is set in a small Alabama town in the Depression-era South in the 1930s. Lawyer Attics Finch (Gregory Peck) defends a black man against an undeserved rape charge, and his kids against prejudice. Finch is a scrupulously honest and highly respected lawyer, a role Gregory Peck interprets to perfection. The trial and surrounding events are seen through the eyes of Finch’s sixyear-old daughter Scout (Mary Badham.) “To Kill A Mockingbird” carries its audience on an odyssey through the fires of prejudice and injustice in 1932 Alabama, This process exposes Scout and her brother Jem to the evils of racism and stereotyping, “To Kill a Mockingbird” was a huge box office success, earning more than 10 times its budget and an overwhelmingly positive response from critics. It won three Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Peck,

and was nominated for a total of eight. Previous to being turned into a film, the book had been translated into more than 40 languages, sold more than 30 mil-

...KENNEY from page 15 middle of autumn. The 2015 season began on May 20, when “Sister Act” opened, and will end on October 25, as the curtain drops on “Saturday Night Fever.” That’s a span of 159 days, or 44 percent of the total calendar year. Another Kenney initiative in 2006 was less obvious, but has had a long-term positive effect. Using his personal connections in the theater world, Kenney snagged the performance rights to re-create Sam Mendes’ fourtime Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of “Cabaret.” Regional premieres of top Broadway shows are now commonplace. “Hairspray” in 2007 and “Les Miserables” in 2008 were early examples. More recent cases include “Young Frankenstein” in 2013, “Billy Elliot” in 2014 plus “Sister Act” and “Saturday Night Fever” this year. A new and welcome development is awards and honors. Prior to Kenney’s directorship, the playhouse had been repeatedly nominated for IRNE awards — and was repeatedly passed over when final results were announced. (The IRNE competition has been held since 1997 by the Independent Reviewers of New England.) No more. The 2014 season

BUSINESS & FINANCE 4 Tips to Help Couples Keep the Peace about Money

Money may not have the power to buy happiness, but it sure can stress us out. In fact, a survey by the American Psychological Association pinpointed money as the leading cause of stress for Americans, with 72 percent saying they had felt at least some stress about money in the previous month. What’s more, about onethird of adults with partners said money is a major cause of conflict in their relationship. Those survey results aren’t necessarily surprising, but there’s also no need to treat them as inevitable, says Cynthia Fick, author of the book “The Sisterhood of Money: The Art of Creating Wealth from Your Heart (www.thesisterhoodofmoney.com).

“A lot of couples don’t like to talk about money, but good communication can play a big role in reducing both the stress and the conflict, she says. And it’s also important for couples to remember that, regardless of who makes the most money or who handles the monthly bill paying, it’s a partnership and both people need to be involved in financial decisions. “A lot of couples simply don’t make those decisions together, Fick says. “They don’t talk things out, they don’t try to understand their differing views about spending and saving, so that creates a situation where trouble between them can start brewing. Fick finds that many women feel less confident about

their money acumen than do men, and so will cede financial decisions to their partner. “Sometimes those negative beliefs come from traditional teachings that told women they were less capable of managing money,â€? Fick says. “That’s simply not true, so wives stuck in that thinking need to come to an understanding that money issues are not somehow beyond them.â€? She has these tips to help couples avoid cash-induced conflict. • Accept your differences. “Just because your spouse’s views about money are different from yours doesn’t make that person wrong and you right,â€? Fick says. “Sometimes different is just different.â€? It’s important to stay open to compromise and

be willing to listen to the other point of view, she says. • Act as a team. You both have knowledge, experience and viewpoints to bring to the situation. Take advantage of that because when you work together you are stronger, Fick says. “Think of it this way,â€? she says. “When both spouses are big savers, they might not have as much fun. When they are both big spenders, they might put their future in jeopardy because they won’t have enough savings.â€? • Don’t wait for a crisis to talk. Discussions about financial matters are best held when heads are cool and no major problem has erupted that would set stress levels spiking, Fick says. “You can set a regular time to talk about your money

situation so, hopefully, it will be a more relaxed atmosphere,â€? she says. • If necessary, seek help. The two of you don’t have to go this alone, Fick says. If you need financial planning assistance, money management counseling or even relationship counseling, you should seek assistance from a professional. That person can listen to the concerns of both spouses and offer advice from an objective and knowledgeable standpoint, Fick says. Cynthia Fick, author of the book “The Sisterhood of Money: The Art of Creating Wealth from Your Heartâ€? (www.thesisterhoodofmoney. com), is an investment advisor with more than 28 years in the field of finance and investing.

this exciting collaboration with NASA is yet another example of their forward-thinking leadership, Senator Angus King said. “GMRI’s work to equip students and teachers with interactive science and technology will help inspire the next generation of scientists and, ultimately, advance our knowledge of climate change. With the changes we’re seeing in the Gulf of Maine and around the globe, this mission has never been more important. I am thrilled NASA has recognized GMRI’s excellence in science and technology education, and look forward to following this innovative program as it enables our students build a deeper understanding of the impact of climate change on the world around them. The grant, titled “Real World, Real Science: Using NASA Data to explore Weather and Climate, will support a redevelopment of GMRI’S existing LabVenture! Program, which is currently featured in the Cohen Center for Interactive Learning in Portland. This renewal will allow the Cohen Center technology to

for over 30 years, arriving on the Hilltop in 1985. During his long tenure, Downey has taught Latin in grades 7-12, as well as Classical Art History and Western Civilization. In addition to teaching, he has held administrative positions including Dean of Students in the Upper School, Language Department Chair, and is currently Dean of the Senior Class. His contribution to the athletic realm over the years has included coaching soccer, hockey, baseball, softball, and the six-time EIL Championship golf team. John lives in Eliot with his wife Sue. His two children, Blake ’13, a junior at Bates College, and Brooke ’15 a freshman at Connecticut College, both graduated from Berwick after spending their K-12 education on the Hilltop. Downey commented, “Teaching at Berwick is not just a job for me, it’s a lifestyle. I enjoy helping students know the fulfillment of their potential. The real paycheck of this job is watching my students become magnificent young adults following their passions and I love the fact that they always remember to share their successes with me. This recent award is truly humbling. I am honored to know that I made such an impact on Jake’s life. I know that Jake himself will be taking the University of Chicago by storm and will be a huge contributing member of their community. Berwick Academy is honored to call Downey a valued and respected member of its community for over three decades and congratulates him on this well-deserved award.

October Is Dyslexia Awareness Month Children have been back to school for a month now, and for many this can be a frustrating and anxiety-producing time. Approximately 20 percent of the population is affected by dyslexia, a disability that is often undiagnosed or misunderstood. Dyslexia is a neurological condition that causes difficulty in reading, writing, spelling and other language skills. It is a genetic condition without a cure. Dyslexia is not associated with intelligence, and having dyslexia does not mean a person cannot succeed. There are many stories of success by people with dyslexia, including Thomas Edison, Stephen Spielberg and F. Scott Fitzgerald. What does it take for someone with dyslexia to successfully deal with their disability? Strong support and a systematic method of instruction are critical. Research indicates that providing a structured, multi-sensory approach to instruction by qualified professionals can result in significant improvements in reading, spelling and writing skills. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Portland is one of

more than 50 centers in the Northeast. Established in 2001, the Portland center is a freestanding, locally administered program governed by a volunteer Board of Governors. The center offers tutoring services free of charge to participants, using the evidencebased Orton-Gillingham method. In addition, the center offers a professional development program, also free of charge, which results in certification at the teacher level through the Children’s Dylexia Centers, Inc. The center is partially funded by the Scottish Rite Masons, as well as private donations, grants, and fundraising events. The center is in the process of establishing a 15K fundraising race “The Cabin Fever 15K Dash for Dyslexia,” which will be held in Freeport on March 19, 2016. For more information, contact Barbara Labrecque, Center Director, at 207-7734949 or visit www.cdcp.me.

Trick or Treating to Fight Malaria YORK COUNTY This Halloween, young people from Seacoast United Methodist congregations will be collecting money for ‘Imagine No Malaria,’ a campaign to eradicate a disease that claims a life every 60 seconds. Through prevention, education and treatment, lives are already being saved. According to the World Health Organization, the mortality rate in Africa has already being cut by 50 percent

in just a few short years. It is now possible to envision the day when no child will have to die from this preventable disease. Please be generous when a trick or treater comes to your door with the special ‘Imagine No Malaria’ collection box. Health & Fitness Grumpy? Perk Up Your Posture! Are you feeling tired and grumpy? Do you ever have trouble lifting yourself from the blues? Straighten out your attitude! Stand up straight! Research shows a big correlation between your posture and your outlook. It turns out posture isn’t just important for how you look – but for how you look at life. From a neurological and hormonal point of view, posture and attitude have been tightly linked in many scientific studies. By strengthening your posture, you not only look better, but you FEEL better – even down to simply taking deeper breaths, which creates many health benefits. The Language of Good Posture: When you look at language, a better posture implies a stronger, more capable way of life. There’s a reason why language has phrases like, ‘Keep your chin up,’ or ‘Hold your head high,’ instead of being ‘downcast,’ where you’re looking down – and feeling down. But when we spend our days slouched over computers, tablets and smart phones, how do we make changes to improve posture? After all, in reality, technology use is a habit that’s not going away anytime soon. We will all keep using computers

and smart phones, but creating posture-smart habits makes sense. Better habits begin with becoming aware of your posture and then doing something systematically to un-bend your body from the folded-forward position. Three Ways to Perk Up your Mood & Attitude: 1. Keep moving. Every 30-45 minutes – take a StrongPostureŽ break at work. Stand up tall, tuck in your pelvis, roll your shoulders up, back and down, and float your head toward the ceiling. 2. Take the stairs. But instead of just choosing the stairs, take a moment to make yourself aware of your posture and carry yourself with strong, tall posture, rather than leaning forward as you climb. 3. Drive tall. When driving, position your seat more vertically and adjust your rear view mirror in a way that forces you to keep your body lengthened, aligned and tall. These 3 tips are your first steps towards standing taller and feeling confident, happier and more energetic. Submitted by posture and healthy living expert Dr. Steven Weiniger who speaks globally on improving posture for longevity, health, pain relief and aging well. He has trained

Health & Fitness UNE Researchers Explore Oxytocin Influence on Psychological Disorders PORTLAND – University of New England (UNE) researchers are embarking on a three-year study into the effects of oxytocin on patients suffering from psychosocial distress, thanks to an Academic Research Enhancement Awards grant through the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Aging. Oxytocin, a naturally produced chemical in the human body, influences how we process and respond to emotional stimuli. Clinicians have long been administering pharmaceutical oxytocin to patients with certain psychiatric disturbances, including autism, schizophrenia and depression, with the goal of alleviating some of the negative symptoms associated with these disorders; however, researchers are now interested in learning more about naturally-occurring oxytocin levels, with the hope that such information will allow them to manipulate these levels to improve the quality of life for patients. Srinidi Mohan, Ph.D., assistant professor in UNE’s Department of Pharmacy, will serve as

co-primary investigator for the study along with Nancy Koven, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at Bates College. “Little is known about the psychosocial correlation of naturally-occurring oxytocin levels,” Mohan explained. “This grant will provide us with the opportunity to administer assessments and behavior tests to better understand. Ultimately, our goal is to help improve people’s emotional well-being and the quality of social relationships.” For details, contact Srinidi Mohan at smohan@une.edu, or call 207-221-4058. ...GROUND from page 1 So that they may provide their best, within the best possible environment,” stated York Hospital President, Jud Knox. In 2014, York Hospital kicked off “Miracles, The Campaign for Birthing & Family Care” with a goal of raising $1,000,000 toward the project. In Wine, Accidental Superstars Abound "Born to Run," the album that catapulted Bruce Springsteen into the national spotlight, recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. Springsteen fanatics love sharing the story behind the album. The Boss released two records in 1973, and although critics praised both, they flopped. So Springsteen's third effort was, quite literally, his last chance. As Springsteen biographer Peter Ames Carlin once explained, "Columbia [Records] gave Bruce and the band just enough money to produce one song to show he could make great singles and prove the next album would be worth making. That's why [the band] took six months on 'Born to Run.' Every single note had to be perfect, otherwise they knew they would be going back to Asbury Park empty-handed." When Columbia executives heard Springsteen's recording, they signed up for a third album. They knew that the 26-year-old Garden Stater was going to be a superstar. Similarly, many of history's greatest wines almost never made it. Consider the wines that emerged victorious at the "Judgment of Paris," the 1976 wine competition that pitted California against France. Everyone assumed that France would win, but the winners -- Chateau Montelena's 1973 Chardonnay and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars' 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon -- hailed from California. The performance transformed America's wine industry, yet both wines almost didn't happen. The story of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars begins in 1969. That year, former Robert Mondavi winemaker Warren Winiarski tasted a homemade Cabernet Sauvignon from winegrowing pioneer Nathan Fay. The wine was an epiphany for Winiarski; it captured everything he loved about Napa Valley. So he promptly purchased 44 acres of land next door to Fay, ripped out most of the prune, cherry, and walnut trees that covered the property, and planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. If Winiarski hadn't tasted Fay's homemade wine -- and been able to purchase the adjoining property -- Chateau Mouton-Rothschild would have won the Judgment of Paris. At Chateau Montelena, winemaker Mike Grgich feared for his job after finishing his 1972 Chardonnay. Grgich had exposed the wine to so

little oxygen during production that a natural browning enzyme remained in the wine for two months after bottling. Had the wine remained brown -- and had Grgich lost his job -- he wouldn't have finished the 1973 Chardonnay, so Domaine Roulot's Meursault-Charmes would have won the Paris contest. The list of inadvertent superstars goes on. John Shafer is sometimes credited with creating Napa Valley's modern style with his 1978 "Hillside Select." But that wine was an accident. Shafer had just moved to Napa Valley and couldn't find any pickers during harvest. As a result, his grapes were picked several days later than planned -- and were consequently much riper. Screaming Eagle, Napa Valley's most famous "cult" Cabernet, traces its origins to a trashcan. In 1986, former real estate agent Jean Phillips purchased 57 acres in Oakville, California. Most of her land was planted to white varieties that were sold. But one acre consisted of Cabernet Sauvignon, from which she made wine in a plastic trashcan. Curious about her homemade wine's potential, Phillips brought some to the team at Robert Mondavi Winery, who promptly encouraged her to produce commercially. So in 1992, Phillips hired well-known consultant Richard Peterson and his daughter, Heidi Barrett. The inaugural release was awarded 99 points by Robert Parker and sold out instantly.

One of Bordeaux's top properties, Château Cheval Blanc, describes its 1947 cuvee as a "happy accident of nature." The weather was extreme that year; by harvest, most grapes had roasted on the vine. Air conditioning and temperature-controlled fermentation tanks didn't yet exist, so the excessive heat continued through production. As a result, many wines -- including the Cheval Blanc -- didn't finish fermentation, so were bottled with significant residual sugar and volatile acidity. Yet, as wine

forever failed to capture oenophiles' imaginations. But it's certainly possible. In wine, as in art, accidental superstars abound. Submitted by David White, founder and editor of Terroirist.com.

The Weekly Recipe: The Best Cornbread Ever - Southern Style Corn bread is a southern delicacy and a must when eating any type of pork or beef meat, especially ribs! The edges are crispy and the center has a wonderful gritty texture that is intensiĂžed with a bit of butter or honey. The secret to making the best corn bread you ever had is to use a seasoned cast iron skillet. Use either white or yellow corn meal; I prefer the yellow as it is a bit coarser. Add a tablespoon of fat or Crisco, add it to your skillet to melt before adding the mixture for a crisp crust.

Ingredients: 6 Tablespoons of butter, softened 2 Jumbo eggs 1 ½ cups of yellow cornmeal 1 cup of all-purpose Ă&#x;our 1 tablespoon of Ă&#x;our 1 tablespoon of baking powder ½ cup of whipped cream 1 Âź teaspoon of salt 1/3 cup of sugar 1 tablespoon of shortening like Ă’Crisco.Ă“ 1 can of cream-style corn, about 14 ounces

Cooking directions: 1} Pour your cream style corn into a blender and blend until smooth, put aside. 2} In a large mixing bowl beat the butter and egg yolks until smooth with an elec-

tric mixer until smooth. Add your pureed cream styled corn and blend well then add the whipping cream, stirring well. Your mixture will be lumpy. 3} Combine the cornmeal, Ă&#x;our, baking powder, salt, and sugar to your large bowl and stir well until all ingredients have been blended. 4} Heat your 9 to 10 inch cast iron skillet in an oven set at 375 degrees with your tablespoon of shortening for about 5 minutes. 5} Beat your egg whites at high speed until stiff peaks form. Add to corn meal batter and fold into the mixture. 6} Remove the cast Iron skillet from the oven. Pour in the batter into the hot skillet and even mixture. 7} Bake at 375 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the cornbread comes out clean. The secret ingredient to this recipe is the can of cream-style corn as most other recipe call for buttermilk. Serve right out of the oven or while it is still warm for the best taste. Great with pulled pork, chili, beef stew, and barbecue ribs from the grill. Enjoy!

When he came to the United States, he obtained Professional Engineering status in the State of New Hampshire. Mike understood how things work and could build anything. In Kenya he built a 35Õ steel schooner, making his own sails, learning to navigate and sailing in the mid-Ô70s with

his wife Sally and 1½ year-old son Brian. They sailed from Mombasa to the Seychelles, Mozambique, around the Cape of Good Hope, to South Africa, St. Helena, Brazil and the Caribbean, then to Florida and up to Maine. Once here he built a home in the woods, a barn, started an orchard, cleared land, etc. He continued his love of sailing and big projects by delivering yachts, completing the hull of another steel boat and teaching his sons to sail. Living family includes, in England, a half-brother Cyril Handley and five nieces and nephews. In West Australia are children: Robert Hunter, Lynne Ketteringham, Rachel Hunter, Susan Gallacher, and Jane Hunter. At home Mike is succeeded by son Brian Hunter and his wife Lynne of Andover, MA, daughter Elizabeth McDuffie and her husband Travis of Cumberland, and son Mark Hunter and his wife Adina of Eliot. In addition, there are 25 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and wife Sally Hunter of South Berwick. He was predeceased by a sister Ann and granddaughter Tiffany. The Hunter family thanks, so very much, those at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital and Hyder Hospice for the skilled, respectful and kind care of their late husband and father. A celebration of life will be held at Spring Hill in South Berwick on Sunday, November 1, 2-5 p.m.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady I have been ÒcleaningÓ folders up in my gmail account. I have several folders I no longer use and would like to delete. How can I delete an empty folder? Thank you in advance for your assistance. BG Dear BG, Removing folders in Gmail is done in the ÒSettingsÓ menu. One thing to note is that Gmail uses the name, ÒLabelsÓ instead of Folders, so you are actually removing a Label instead of a folder. Here are the directions: From your main Gmail window, click on the ÒSettingsÓ icon in the upper-right part of the window. It looks like a gear, and when you hover your mouse over the icon, the word, ÒSettingsÓ will appear. In the Settings menu, click on the ÒSettingsÓ sub-menu, and

it will bring you to a settings page. Across the top, you will see links to each settings page, click on the link for ÒLabelsÓ. Scroll down until you find the Labels section and find the empty label (or folder) that you wish to delete, and look in the third column (under Actions) to the right. Click ÒRemoveÓ and your label will be removed. If you remove a label that has messages in it, the messages will not be deleted, they just wonÕt have that label attached to them any more. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, My kids insisted that the business world is going to Chrome Books and they obtained one for me. My problem is that it doesnÕt have a CD or DVD player. I have a medical bracelet

and IÕd like to update the information on it, but I need to use the CD and program that puts the program into Chrome Book. Is there a solution for this? Thank you, Roberta Dear Roberta, You can purchase an optical drive with a USB connection to use with your Chromebook, but before you do, you need to find out if your medical bracelet program needs windows in order to work. If the program is a Windows program, it will not run on your Chromebook, since the Chromebook only runs the chrome operating system. A Chromebook is great for email and web browsing, and you can use Google Documents online for creating and editing documents, but it does not run programs like a computer with the Windows operating system does. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I hope you can help me with a problem IÕm having with my Facebook. Is there a way to put pictures and articles on to it from emails that people send to me? I canÕt find any good instructions on how to do it. Thank you for any help you can give! Sincerely, Ferne Dear Ferne, Depending on what email program you use, it is probably not possible to post content di-

rectly from your email account to your Facebook page. In order to put content from an email on your Facebook page, you would need to first save that content on your computer, and then upload it to Facebook. Once you have saved your photo on your computer, just go to your Facebook page and click on ÒAdd Photos/VideoÓ just above where it says, ÒWhatÕs on your mind?Ó. A windows explorer window will open. This allows you to find your photo, click on it, and then click on the ÒOpenÓ button. Wait while your photo uploads, you can type a description while you are waiting. When the photo is ready, just click the ÒPostÓ button to share it with your friends. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Regarding photos. I do use Picasa but have not used it correctly and my photos are a jumble. Do you have a program in mind that will make it easy to put my photos in some kind of order? For some reason I find multiples of some of the photos! I read your comments on storing them on CD/DVDs. Thanks for that info! Jean Dear Jean, Putting your photos in order is easy if you start out

with some sort of plan, and much harder the longer you go without a plan. Picasa makes it pretty easy to organize your photos, and I am not aware of any program that makes it easier. I personally donÕt use Picasa, I just use Windows Explorer and store my pictures in folders by date. For example, in my Pictures folder on my computer, I create a folder for each year. Inside each year, I have more folders broken down my month. As long as I can remember when an event occurred, I am able to find a picture for that event. If you use Picasa, not only can you organize your pictures by date, but you can also tag the pictures with the names of the people or places in the pictures. That will make it easier to find photos of a certain person or a specific place. No matter what program or method you use to organize your photos, if you have a lot of them already on your computer, it is going to take A LOT of work to get them organized. solid strike which Montagno was able to tip, but the shot still found its way to the back of the net. The game remained tied 1-1 going into halftime. The Bulldogs were determined to come out strong in the second half, and only 4 minutes into the half the Bulldogs capitalized on a free kick when Caroline Hernon (Hampton, NH) set up Moore, who ripped another shot that the Newton keeper couldn't hold onto. Kat Reid (Dover, NH) got the rebound and made it 2-1 for the Bulldogs. In the 58th minute, Starr received the ball from Annie Vatcher (Kennebunk) and hit a nice low shot to the far post to make it 3-1. Starr finished with an assist and goal on her birthday and now leads the team with 6 goals

this season. Sam Montagno made a big save off a drive from distance, and dove on the rebound before two Newton strikers were able to get to it. In the 77th minute, Hernon dribbled down the sideline after a throw-in from Christina Grassie (Somersworth, NH) and beat two defenders down the sideline and baseline. With little angle to shot her shot beat the keeper and hit the back post, such that not even a scrambling NCD keeper could keep the ball out of the net and the final score would remain 4-1. Scoring Summary: Berwick 16th minute McDermott from Farid/Starr NCD 37th minute; Berwick 44th Reid from Moore; Berwick 58th Starr from Vatcher; Berwick 77th Hernon from Grassie.

SCORE BOARD Berwick Academy

Girls’ Varsity Soccer Wed., Oct. 14 BA 0 vs Marianapolis - 4 The Bulldogs traveled to Marianapolis and struggled to create chances and get an offensive rhythm on a big field with grass longer then the bus ride. Marianapolis struck first in the opening five minutes on a breakaway and increased the lead in the 25th minute off a freekick. Unfortunately the Bulldogs could not capitalize in the first half and Marianapolis added a third goal just before halftime. The Bulldogs were better in the second half with Julia Schaepe (Newburyport, MA) and

Tess Varley (North Hampton, NH) shutting down two of Marianapolis' most dangerous players. Marianapolis scored their fourth and final goal off a freekick in the 48th minute. Kenza Farid (Hampton, NH) played amazing in the back for the whole game. The Bulldogs best chance came from Laura Hoy (York) in the 69th minute on a low shot to the corner, but the Marianapolis keeper made the diving save.

Fri, Oct 16 BA 4 vs. Newton Country Day 1 The Bulldogs traveled to Newton Country Day and came away with a solid 4-1 victory to remain undefeated in the EIL. In the 13th minute, Abby Moore (Rollinsford, NH) ripped a shot in the top right

corner that hit the post and bounced out of net. The ball popped out to Moore again who volleyed it right under the crossbar, but the keeper pushed the ball out to Siobhan McDermott (North Andover, MA), who rebounded the ball off the post, and then out wide. In the 16th minute, Caroline Starr (Rye, NH) sent a great ball across the field to Kenza Farid (Hampton, NH), who beat several defenders to the end line and made a great cross to McDermott, who scored in the middle of the scramble in front of the net to make the score 1-0. In the 28th minute, Sam Montagno (Exeter, NH) made a great save to keep the Bulldogs ahead. In the 37th minute, after a foul outside the penalty area, NCD was awarded a free kick and hit a

“Trick or Trot Open House at Lyman Hill Farm

SOUTH BERWICK Lyman Hill Farm is hosting their 3rd annual “Trick or Trot open house fundraiser, from 12 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 24 at 57 Bennett Lot Road, South Berwick. Each year, we have selected a local charity to benefit from the proceeds. This year’s proceeds will help fund the summer camp scholarship program for, The Center of Autism and Related Disabilities of New England, known as “Camp Cardne.

The South Berwick farm welcomes children of all ages to come in costume and meet all our horses, which include Welsh ponies and a miniature horse named Cupcake. All horses will be in costume and ready to “Bob for Apples! Events featured are a Scavenger Hunt, Pumpkin Decorating, Face Painting, Sack Races, Raffles, many Games, Catch the Donut, Trick or Treat Stations and of course Pony Rides. Sami is benefiting from hydrotherapy sessions where she kicks her hind legs in water to strengthen the muscles. Sami re-

They’ve made Little Sami healthy and happy. Our newest special-needs kitty is Dove. This spunky and playful kitty arrived with four others, born to a stray on a property full of other stray cats. She also provides pony rides to many local festivals including The South Berwick Strawberry Festival, International Kids Day removed. We need to raise about $2,000 for her surgery at Portland Vet Specialists. If you can help us pay for this surgery, please do. Every Safe Haven kitty receives all their medical needs, no matter how expensive. Special-needs kitties who need expensive ultrasounds and tests take a big chunk out of our already tight budget. After learning what the cost of the surgery would be, I returned to our thrift store to tell our team that we needed to raise lots more money. A money tree

Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK – Have you met Luna? She’s a 9-year old short-haired cat who is currently residing with our Volunteer Coordinator Marie in her office. Luna has been with us for quite some time, in fact November 18 will mark a year she has been available for adoption at our shelter. Everyone who

has met her will agree that’s far too long for such a darling cat. True, Luna is sometimes not in the mood for getting attention, but she’s often a lovable, social gal. She even enjoys being picked up and held for a little while. She has taken very well to office life and loves having plenty of places to nap in and call her own, which of course includes taking over the keyboard. Luna fancies herself a Queen at times and would very much prefer to be the only cat in a new home. She would be happy to share a new home with cat savvy dogs and respectful children. Luna is diabetic; her condition is maintained by a steady diet of wet food as well as regular insulin injections. Main-

These two funloving guys have lived together before and would really love to find a new home together. They would be happy to share a new home with other dogs and cats, but would prefer not to live with small children. If you’re in the market for a pair of furry, funny, friendly fellow, then stop on by the shelter today to meet Teddy and Patches. Meet Jasper and Holly, two 18-year old Amazons. These two are a bonded pair, so they must be adopted together. Their adoption fee will be $350 for just them; they do not come with a cage. Volunteers are needed for the adoption center to care for kitties and socialize the shy ones. We also currently need paper towels, Dawn dishwashing detergent, and Mr. Clean. Thanks!

Another Chance Animal Rescue

NORTH BERWICK Meet Anna Bell and sister Mary Bell. These two adorable Maine Coon sisters are absolutely the most loving and adorable pair anyone could possibly have as new family members. Anna has the classic Maine Coon trait of extra toes on the front paws, while Mary is not blessed with this added trait. Both girls are social, playful, and will do every well with older children, and all other family members including nonaggressive dogs and house cats. Both girls are already spayed, vaccinated, wormed, and have passed their wellness exam.

In addition to our featured pets of the week, we still have a limited number of young kittens, a good number of young adult cats, and a smaller number of older adult cats. We also have a limited number of dogs that are hoping to be adopted before the holidays! Please check out our adoptable pets at www.petfinder.com in the 03906 zip code.
