In Honor of Local Ghosts

KENNEBUNK There are many stories of ghosts and witches that swirl around towns in New England. With some of the oldest buildings in the country so lovingly preserved, there comes an abundant ethereal history. One local haunt to pay homage to this Halloween is at the Kennebunk Inn, located at 45 Main Street in Kennebunk. The story begins in 1799 when Phineas Cole built the home as a private residence. Rumor has it that Silas Perkins, who passed away in the mid-twentieth century, continues to inhabit his place of former employment. Silas Perkins was a native

of Kennebunkport and a wellknown poet. He was born in 1880 on the Kennebunk-built ship “Mt. Washington” when his father, Captain Fordyce Perkins, was master. Silas spent his twilight years working as the night watchman at the Kennebunk Inn as its currently-known. One day in June 1952, he left the inn to buy a newspaper across the street. Before he reached the other side, he collapsed from a heart attack. He was quickly helped back to the inn, where he ultimately died in Room 17 – Now said to be the most haunted room at the inn. Visitors reporting unnaturally cold brushes of air, rattling doorknobs, and opening doors.

York Police Take Part in Bruin’s Pre-Game

A housekeeper was cleaning the room when the unplugged television turned on by itself. Guests have also reported seeing a man in a double-breasted suit standing in one of the second-story windows, described as “obviously not from this era.” A local medium has visited the Kennebunk Inn several times, and suggested that there are three spirits inhabiting the structure: Perkins; another former employee named Cyrus; and a little girl named Emily. But it is Silas Perkins who has remained on the job, even in the afterlife, keeping an eye on the guests. Information and photos provided by Brick Store Museum’s Facebook page.

MMS’ 19th Annual Veterans Day Celebration

ELIOT On November 1, 2019, Marshwood Middle School will host its 19th annual Veterans Day Celebration. The school-wide assembly, starts at 9 a.m. and will feature various student tributes to local veterans. Most of the veterans are parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends of our students and staff. Local first responders and various dignitaries, including state representatives, local politicians, and school board members will attend to honor the veterans. Last year, over 400 guests were in attendance. All guests form a recep-

tion line at 9 a.m. and every student passes through the line shaking hands and welcoming our guests. The reception line emphasizes a personal touch for every student to come in contact with the guests. Upon gathering in the gym, the Eliot Police Department Honor Guard will post the Colors and for the next hour, several tributes are presented from the student assembly to veterans in musical selections, video presentations, and readings. At the conclusion of the assembly, a luncheon will take place the cafeteria where students serve the veterans and

York County Parishes Assist with “Box of Joy” Program YORK COUNTY Three years ago, Elyse Wilson of Christ the King Parish in Skowhegan read about a program that helped provide shoe boxes full of gifts to mission children in South America who had never received Christmas presents before. “I was very inspired by the stories, and I thought it would be a great way for kids in our area to get involved with missions,”

she said. “Children are naturally generous, and they love to give gifts, especially at Christmas time.” Weeks later, “Box of Joy” in Maine was born. ON NOVEMBER 5TH, As marijuana legalization approaches reality in Maine, Eliot has the opportunity to support a legal, regulated, and safer adult cannabis and in so doing:

EMPOWER LAW ENFORCEMENT It's time to draw this industry out of the black market, regulate and tax it, and free up law enforce ment resources to concentrate on serious issues that truly impact Eliot residents' quality of life. REGULATE FOR CONSUMER SAFETY People buying marijuana on the street (i.e. the current vape scare) have no way of knowing if what they're ingesting is covered with mold, fungus, pesticides, or other harmful substances.Licensed distributors lab test products and check IDs to limit youth access (studies show drop in youth use of cannabis once cannabis is legalized) - black market operators do not.

ON:

PROVIDE TAX REVENUE Cannabis sales in Maine (est. to grow to $300+ million) will provide hundreds of millions in tax revenue over the next decade. In states like Colorado, cannabis brings in 3x more tax $$ than alcohol. DRIVE BUSINESS & CREATE JOBS For every $1.00 spent in the marijuana industry, between $2.13 and $2.40 in economic activity is generated. Tourism, banking, food, real estate, construction, agriculture and transportation are a few of the industries that benefit from legal marijuana. At Sweet Dirt alone, we expect to hire up to 60 people during the next year.

~ Library News ~ “Haunted, A Translation into Paint” at Kennebunk Free Library KENNEBUNK The Kennebunk Free Library announces its November 2019 exhibition, “Haunted, A translation into paint!”, the oil paintings of Sherry Holden Dresser Dec, formerly from Kennebunk. The public is invited to view the exhibit at 112 Main Street, Kennebunk, during regular library hours when the gallery is not in use for library programs, as well as an artist’s reception on Saturday, November 2, 1-3 p.m. From the Artist: “After thirty-seven years of teaching, I retired and found a new passion as I began to paint. I’ve found two particular elements catch me. I am forever chasing the use of light on a surface. The power and scope of its mystery challenges me again and again with each new project. I feel like I am learning to see for the first time. I also explore the energy underneath objects, people, and landscapes. I find that the right composition, color and value unlock a deeper level of truth about my chosen subject. Only when I can get those qualities right, do I begin to authentically paint it. I have had a wonderful teacher for seven years, Ron

Frontin, who has inspired me to work hard. He is a masterful painter and I am acquiring skills to begin the level of painting I want to express because of him. The adventure has begun and I’ve been waiting all my life to do this work. My Y.A. book ‘Haunted’ inspired this show. Set in Kennebunk-Kennebunkport in the 19th century, characters and landscapes from its pages fueled my imagination. I sign my book with the statement, ‘Everything you do counts!’ I believe that each of us have the responsibility to live deliberately with compassion and humanity. The book implies reincarnation and that a score is kept from lifetime to lifetime of everyone’s intentions as they live their lives. When Julie goes back in time and becomes Victoria a hundred years in the past, she must solve a mystery and complete something she chose to ignore then.”

The nonprofit is dedicated to inspiring, bringing together, and allowing young people to voice their stories through music. “[New England Sings] helps artists hone in on their talent and use their gifts on behalf of other children in their generation that are in need of support,” DioGuardi said during an introductory video at the competition. Sifflard, who played the cajón (a box-shaped percussion instrument), was applauded by Hayes for playing and writing blues-based music, and for “killing” his performance. Bailey sang opera, and received the loudest and most enthusiastic crowd reaction of the night. She introduced the song she was singing by explaining the lyrics, which were largely sung in Italian, translate to saying goodbye to one’s country. She related this message to the fear and hope many immigrants coming to America must have felt in making the decision to immigrate. The competition’s results were decided American Idol-style by audience members texting their votes once all performers had sung. Local sponsors of the event included Congress Wealth Management, Bangor Savings Bank, Walkers Maine Restaurant, York Hospital, Robert’s Maine Grill, The Front Porch, Stage Neck Inn, and Aland Realty. National sponsors included iHeartRadio, Berklee College of Music, Universal Music Group, Arthouse Entertainment, Atlantic Records and BMI. All proceeds from the competition will go to beneficiaries Portsmouth Music & Arts Center, Music & Youth, and the Ogunquit Playhouse scholarship.

Thanks, Sarah L Dear Sarah, An email list is something like an ongoing email discussion. Any email message that is sent to the list is automatically sent to each list member. Some lists have only a few messages a week, while others have over a hundred messages each day. To participate, you need to first “join” the email list. If you are curious, visit https://groups.io/ and take a look at all the groups there. Once you have joined a list, it is a good idea to “lurk” on the list for a while to get a feel for the atmosphere of the list, and what kind of “posts” are acceptable. Lurking is when a member of the list just reads all the messages without actually sending any messages of their own. Any message sent to a list is called a post, since by sending a message to a list, you are posting it for all the members of the list to see. There are email lists on every subject imaginable. Computers, cooking, sewing, fan clubs, bible studies, business tips and computer tips are just a few. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. To submit a question, email her at elizabeth. boston@gmail.com.

Social Security Announces 1.6% Benefit Increase WASHINGTON, D.C. The Social Security Administration announced that Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for nearly 69 million Americans will increase 1.6% in 2020. The 1.6 percent cost-ofliving adjustment (COLA) will begin with benefits payable to more than 63 million Social Security beneficiaries in Janu-

ary 2020. Increased payments to more than 8 million SSI beneficiaries will begin on December 31, 2019. (Note: some people receive both Social Security and SSI benefits). The Social Security Act ties the annual COLA to the increase in the Consumer Price Index as determined by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some other adjustments that take effect in January of

Short Sale Versus Foreclosure Shopping for real estate may require prospective buyers to learn a whole new language. Buyers may come across certain terms they don’t understand. Among the more common terms that first-time buyers may not fully understand are “short sale” and “foreclosure.” According to Realtor. com, short sales and foreclosure auctions are situations that occur when homeowners fall behind on payments and can no longer afford to live in a home. A short sale happens when a homeowner owes more on the mortgage balance than the market value of the property when the owner needs to sell. The homeowner can ask the mortgage lender to accept a lesser amount than the total mortgage owed - making the homeowner/seller “short” on paying the lender back. A foreclosure is a legal process that occurs when a borrower cannot make mortgage loan payments for a significant period of time. If the debt is not recouped, lenders will step in and take ownership of the property, putting it up for sale in a foreclosure auction. While these situations can be troublesome for the homeowner facing financial

Based on that increase, the maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax (taxable maximum) will increase to $137,700 from $132,900. peril, distressed properties can be advantageous for buyers who oftentimes can buy homes at steep discounts. However, short sales and foreclosures are not without challenges. The real estate experts at Zillow say that foreclosures and short sales involve more layers than traditional transactions. Zillow offers that bank lenders historically can be slow at giving approval for mortgages to purchase short sale properties or even agreeing on an amount for the sale. As a result, buyers may miss out on other opportunities while waiting for short sales to move along. Foreclosures carry their own hurdles. Buyers may not get a chance to even see a foreclosure property, nor be eligible to have it inspected, as foreclosed homes are typically sold “as-is” and at auction. The real estate agency Re/Max says buying a foreclosure typically is faster than buying a short sale, and an investor can buy a foreclosed home for below market value. But foreclosures cannot be contingent on the sale of another home, so a buyer must have funds in place and be ready to move quickly. Short sales are often initiated by homeowners looking to avoid foreclosure. As a result,

AUGUSTA Consumer confidence bolstered sales of single-family existing homes in Maine last month. The Maine Association of REALTORS® released statistics today showing an 11.01% jump in sales during September 2019 compared to September 2018. Statewide, the median sales price (MSP) in September increased 6.4% to $228,750 compared to September 2018. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. “September 2019 was a record-breaker with 1,866 sales short sale properties may be in decent condition. This may not be the case with a foreclosure. The American Society of Home Inspectors says foreclosed homes may have been neglected by having utilities turned off and no maintenance done on the home. Other homes may have been purposefully vandalized by the former owner or by squatters. Short sales and foreclosure properties are options for buyers who want to get the best price possible on a home and are willing to take some risks in their pursuits. statewide. Buyers are in the market and are taking action,” says Peter Harrington, 2019 President of the Maine Association of REALTORS® and Broker/ Partner with Malone Commercial Brokers in Portland. “After a down-and-up year of real estate activity, a strong September has brought the total sales volume to 0.8% ahead of 2018—Maine’s best year.” Nationally, sales of singlefamily existing homes rose 3.9% comparing September 2019 to September 2018. According to

the National Association of REALTORS®, the MSP for those homes increased 6.1% to $275,100. Regional sales in the Northeast are up 1.5%, and the regional MSP jumped 5.2% to $301,100 comparing September 2019 to September 2018. “With Maine’s low unemployment rate, strong consumer confidence, job security, and responsible lending practices, positive fourth quarter results will depend on the availability of quality-for-sale inventory,” says Harrington.

If you are making your own costume, avoid loosely woven fabrics like linen and cotton, which can be very flammable. The Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault works in collaboration with Aroostook Mental Health Center, Rape Response Services, and Sexual Assault Support of Midcoast Maine. Safe Voices of Auburn received $624,941 to improve safety and the criminal justice response for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking in Oxford County. Safe Voices works in collaboration with Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services and Maine Prosecutorial District Three. This funding was awarded through the Office on Violence Against Women’s Rural Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence,

Cameron N. Cooley, 18 NORTH BERWICK – Cameron Cooley died unexpectedly Friday, October 18, 2019 at Wentworth-Douglas Hospital in Dover, NH, after a long battle with epilepsy. He was born February 18, 2001 in Biddeford, the youngest son of Lester and Rebecca (Wilson) Cooley. Cameron would’ve graduated Noble High School in June. Cameron loved the Lord and was very active in the Bethel Christian Church Youth Group and Sunday School programs as well as played drums in the band. He was a warm-hearted, caring and giving kid. He had such a big heart that on his days off, he would visit the residents of Varney Crossing Nursing Home where he worked as a dietary aide. His smile lit up the faces of the residents and of others who knew and loved him. He also enjoyed fishing with Andrew, playing drums, and so enjoyed his time with special friends and mentors, Josh Gove, Bob, Lisa

Glidden, and many others who took him under their wing. Cameron had a passion for playing video games, especially the Fallout Game series. He loved being with his older brothers and being part of something, whether it be the Bethel Band or parades in town. He loved a good adventure, and walking everywhere in town saying “Hi” to everyone, being the friendliest kid around. He loved going on beach trips with Ben and Jordan, or to the Kittery Outlets. He had a genuine heart that wanted to take care of everybody. Cameron will be forever loved by his parents Lester and Becky Cooley; two brothers Malachi Cooley and fiancé Monica Young, and Benjamin Cooley and fiancé Jordan Guptill, all of North Berwick; paternal grandmother Irene Norton of South Berwick; paternal grandfather Barry and Ann Cooley of York; best friend Andrew Turcotte of Lebanon; Max the cat; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins; and his extended church family at Bethel. Visiting Hours were held Thursday, October 24, 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Bethel Christian Church, 129 Lower Main Street, North Berwick, where funeral services will be held Friday, October 25 at 10 a.m. Interment in Hillside Cemetery, North Berwick. Friends who wish may contribute in his memory to the Bethel Christian Church Music Fund, P.O. Box 537, North Berwick, ME 03906, or to the Epilepsy Foundation New England,

Norm will always be remembered for his kindness, his steady nature, his love and devotion to family, his thoughtful observations, and his subtle but keen sense of humor. received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Ursinus College in Pennsylvania, and later served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. In 1957, he married Nancy Ewen, and eventually they settled in Franklin, MA, where they raised their five children. During that time, Norm worked for Raytheon for 25 years and was an active member of the Franklin Federated Church. Later they retired to Ogunquit. Norm’s family expresses sincere gratitude to the staff at Sentry Hill and Caring Way, both of York, for their love, friendship, kindness, and compassionate care during his final years. A memorial service celebrating Norm’s life is being

FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

She graduated from St. Margaret’s High School in Waterbury, CT, Class of 1958, and attended Colby Junior College in New London, NH. In 1959 she married her first and only love, Harry D. Lyttle and together they raised their four children, first, 40 years in West Townsend, MA, and then on Drakes Island in Maine. Marty loved her family more than anything else in the world. And her family would extend beyond her blood kin. At their home the door was always open. There was always room for one more at the table, for an overnight, or in a pen, as her devotion often extended to orphaned or injured animals, both domestic and wild. It was on Drakes Island that she became “Nin” to her grandchildren. It was on Drakes Island where she made summers magical. And it was from Drakes Island, Marty traveled the east coast to watch all her grandchildren partake in all their respective activities. Animal Welfare Society

KENNEBUNK I’m a dog with a blog. Check it out at www.animalwelfaresociety.org/home_page_ promo/a-dog-with-a-blog/. My name is Carlos and I’m looking for a home with an energetic, adult only family who live in a rural area. I’m a proven “escape artist” so a home with minimal foot traffic going in and out the door would be best. I can get very overwhelmed with too much stimulus around me such as new people and dogs so let’s keep my home peaceful and quiet. I would do best in a home where I can utilize a large fenced in yard to safely run and drain my endless energy. I can really get myself worked-up when I’m on leash and see another dog, which makes taking me for a walk around them nearly impossible. But I have successfully met and played with several dog friends here at AWS and enjoy running around in a safely-fenced in yard and exploring the area. My ideal home would be

either as the only pet or with another dog that is medium or large sized that can handle my sometimes intense energy level. Having a calm, confident canine role model in my life may be good for me. Cats and small animals are a big “no-no” for me in the home. You may also want to hold on tight to the leash if there is a squirrel in the yard because I love to find them and to point them out for you! (Don’t even get me started on chipmunks!) I need an experienced dog owner who is willing to put in the time with me to help me live my best life. In exchange, I am a loving, loyal companion. If you think you could give me the home, yard, love and support I need, please give our behavior and training team a call to make an appointment to meet. They can be reached

Carlos will be showing off his tricks and giving out treats in front of AWS this Saturday, Oct. 26, 12-1 p.m. If you’re interested in learning more about him, please stop by! Wednesday, Oct. 30 is Pal-oween at AWS! We’ll make treats for the animals, have a costume parade, and trick or treat around the Adoption Center and program offices. Come after school 3:30-4:30 p.m. to 46 Holland Road, Kennebunk. FREE and fun for all!

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK Introducing “Lorelai” and her baby “Rory”! This dynamic mum and baby kitten are absolutely darling, hilarious and very bonded. Both are super sweet and would love nothing more than to find a family willing to adopt them both together! Rory was an only kitten born to Lorelai and is approximately 14 weeks old. They are ok with dogs and children if both are respectful and introduced gradually. Both Lorelai and Rory along with many other amazing cat and kitten friends can be met this Saturday, Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during our Open Adoption hours at 251 Country Club Road (Route 4), Sanford. Efforts to Open Fuller Forest Preserve in 2020

YORK York Land Trust is taking initial steps toward opening their new Fuller Forest Preserve for public access, with a grand opening planned for August of 2020. The 220-acre preserve on Bartlett Road will be one of the land trust’s largest, with plans for three miles of new walking trails. A parking lot, to be built next spring, will help increase public access to the preserve with room for 15-20 cars and a school bus. In addition to hiking, hunting by permission will also be allowed. The land trust has begun designing the new parking area, has mapped out trail routes, and will soon implement a sustainable forest management plan for the preserve. The plan includes work to reduce invasive plants and selectively harvest timber from within a 100-acre area

north of Dolly Gordon Brook to improve the health of the forest. The harvest will take place later this fall or winter. “By creating some openings in the predominantly red oak forest canopy, we will increase the amount of sunlight reaching the forest floor which will help the understory to grow, says Joe Anderson, York Land Trust’s Stewardship Director. “This will result in a more diverse, mixed-age forest that includes old trees and a wider variety of trees species. These changes will enhance the quality of habitat for wildlife and the resilience of the forest to exotic pests and diseases.” The land trust has identified sensitive wetlands that they will avoid in both the timber harvest and trail design. New bog bridges will help ease wetland crossings within the trail

system as well. After years of planning, the land trust is eager to finally take these steps to make the preserve available to the community. “We promised the community a preserve that they could enjoy, and we’re excited to be working toward delivering that promise,” says Doreen MacGillis, Executive Director of York Land Trust. The property originally belonged to the late Marion Fuller Brown who was a founder of York Land Trust in 1986 as well as a member of the Maine House of Representatives and a leader in statewide conservation efforts. York Land Trust is grateful to the Town of York for its contribution of $300,000 and other private donors for their support that made the land trust’s acquisition of the property possible in 2017.

YORK Despite widespread power outages from the storm last week, the York Wildcats showed they had power to spare in a rescheduled Saturday game against Morse in Bath, that resulted in a commanding 55-6 win to improve their regular season record to 6-1. Highlights included Caleb “Papa G” Pappagallo scoring three touchdowns, Hayden Hen-

riksen and Riley Linn each scoring a pair and Teagan Hynes who had a QB keeper for one. Aidan Martin also went 7 for 8 on extra points. Strong offensive and defensive play was also shown by the JV in the second half to preserve the win. The last game of the season is scheduled to take place this Friday evening against Wells at 6 p.m. at York High School.
