Halloween at the Junkins Haunted Estate in Kittery KITTERY The Junkins Haunted Estate will be open for their 30th year. This has been quite a journey and a lot of fun but 2017 will be the last year for the 'swamp walk.' However, decorating the front lawns is expected for years to come! Junkins Estate is the largest non-commercial (free) Halloween home haunt event in New England and just maybe the country. Over 2,000 people from all over the Northeast come each year to stroll through the old family

estate located at 87 Wilson Road Kittery. Over two acres of Halloween decorations await guests. Don't let the warm fuzzy kiddy decorations from the safety of your car fool you, if you want the candy it's a quarter-mile through the haunted swamp! As you follow the luminaries towards the woods and cross the bridge into the swamp, the darkness will surround you and the cold swamp air will chill you to your bones... oh, and by the way, they will be waiting for you!

Admission is as always, free (donations are graciously excepted to defray the cost of electric bill!) Remaining dates for 2017: October 27-31, about 6:30-9 p.m. weather permitting. Special nonscary time for the little ones will be October 30 from 5-6 p.m. Families are welcome and all children 18 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. More information, photos and videos on Facebook page - "Junkins Haunted Estate."

Poison Control Warns of Halloween Hazards Adulterated candy isn’t the only hazard that kids face on Halloween, according to the California Poison Control System (CPCS). Keep them safe this Halloween with these 10 tips. Glow-in-the-dark jewelry and glow sticks are used by parents to keep their children visible while trick-or-treating. Children may break open these glow sticks getting the liquid on their hands and in their mouths which can be mildly irritating to the skin or eyes but is not likely to cause harm if a small amount is ingested. Children should not eat

treats until they return home and all items have been inspected by an adult. Torn, loose or punctured wrapping may be a sign of tampering which should be reported to the police. Limit the amount of candy ingested at one time. Too much candy can cause stomach discomfort, and sugars and other sweeteners can act as laxatives when consumed in large amounts. If a child brings home a brand of candy that is not familiar, throw it away. Some imported candies have high levels of lead that can be harmful. Candy that is unwrapped

Homemade treats should be discarded unless the individuals who prepared them are well known and trusted. Small pieces of candy are potential choking hazards for small children. The History Games to be Held in South Berwick on November 4 open at 7 p.m. at Wadleigh Gardens Ballroom on Main St, South Berwick, which in 1871 was a community center known as Newichiwannock Hall. “Why should kids have all the fun? said Nicole St. Pierre, event coordinator who for years has taught students during South Berwick’s Hike through History. Loosely based on the more educational, fact-based 'Hike Through History' coordinated by Central Elementary School,

SOUTH BERWICK People wishing to explore South Berwick’s historic village will hobnob with the likes of author Sarah Orne Jewett and her servants in the 1800s, sockhop at Teen Haven in the 1950s, and solve a scandalous murder case that riveted the town in 1901, all while raising funds for their local historical society. The event is called the “History Games, presented by Old Berwick Historical Society on Saturday, November 4. Doors

the History Games is tailored for adults to have a fun night out, and includes a scavenger hunt leading to a “Speakeasy with drinks and food, St. Pierre explained. Participants are invited to come with a team or join a team after they arrive. Everyone will compete for points as they collect clues, participate in team challenges and try to solve the puzzle. Winners will be celebrated with a trophy. Over 20 historical society volunteers worked several months to prepare the event by researching local history and creating costumes. The event will feature authentic history, researched at the historical society’s Counting House Museum and related by costumed characters impersonating old sea captains, a Revolutionary War widow, and citizens escaping the famous downtown Fire of 1870.

Tickets at $40 per person are available through the Old Berwick Historical Society’s website. The evening will also include a small live auction. The event supports the society's Counting House Museum as well as yearround programs of events for all ages. St. Pierre said the historical society is grateful to the owners of the five historic buildings on the tour. They include the 1774 Sarah Orne Jewett House, owned by Historic New England; the 1798 former Frost Tavern, soon to be a bed and breakfast; the 1925 South Berwick Central School; the 1903 Academy Street home of attorney George Yeaton, now owned by Berwick Academy; and the 1871 Newichawannock Hall, now Wadleigh Gardens Ballroom. For more information, and to buy tickets, visit www. oldberwick.org, or call 207-3840000.

At “The History Games, a new fundraiser to benefit the Old Berwick Historical Society, participants will roam through South Berwick’s historic village.

Veterans will be honored on November 3 at Marshwood Middle School during their 17th Veterans’ Day Celebration.

SOUTH BERWICK On Friday, November 3, Marshwood Middle School will host their 17th Annual Veterans Day Celebration. The schoolwide assembly, which starts at 9 a.m., features various tributes from students to local veterans. Most of the veterans are parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends of Marshwood students. Local first responders and various dignitaries, including state representatives, local politicians and school board members attend the celebration to honor the veterans. Last year, over 400 guests were in attendance. All guests form a reception line at 8:30 a.m., then every

student passes through the line shaking hands and welcoming their guests, emphasizing a personal touch for every student. After everyone gathers in the gym, the Eliot Police Honor Guard posts the Colors and for the next hour several tributes are presented from the students to the veterans in musical selections, video presentations and readings. After the assembly, the school hosts an amazing luncheon in the cafeteria where the students serve the veterans and dine with them. Following the luncheon, veterans are invited to stay and share their stories with the eighth graders in the classrooms.

~ News ~ Eastern Cottontail Poses Threat KITTERY The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) have recently confirmed sightings of eastern cottontail rabbits on Badger’s Island. Eastern cottontails are a non-native species that can pose a threat to our native cottontail rabbit, the New England cottontail. The New England cottontail is currently a State Endangered species that can also be found in Kittery, although not within Kittery Foreside at this time. The population of eastern cottontails found on Badger’s Island is the first confirmed population of the species in Maine. The MDIFW is seeking the public’s help in identifying areas where eastern cottontails may be located in an attempt to determine the extent of the population and the threat it may pose to our native cottontails. Question 1? By voting YES, we can allow a first-class gaming and entertainment venue to be built in York County.

“As a kitchen manager, it’s important to have a full staff that you can depend on. Yes on 1 would give my employees a paycheck year round.” — Keith Knight Scarborough, ME

The new entertainment venue and event center is projected to generate over $45 million in revenue for the residents of Maine, each year, without raising taxes.1 The establishment of the facility will lead to the creation of 2,767 construction jobs and 2,165 permanent jobs as well as $175 million in capital investment. That means year-round activity and long-term employment opportunities right here in York County. Plus, the state will receive over $3,028,817 in additional funding every year specifically for property tax relief — it’s written right into the legislation. That means lower property taxes statewide and more money back in the pockets of hardworking families of Maine.

More jobs, year-round business, and property tax relief. Better schools, improved seniors programs, and support for veterans.

On November 7, Vote YES Question 1!

Wells Reserve to Expand Fisheries Science and Conflict Management Research WELLS Two grants from the National Estuarine Research Reserve System’s Science Collaborative will extend Wells Reserve research in collaborative and fisheries science. Both projects begin this fall, continue into 2019, and involve colleagues from across the country. The Wells Reserve will receive $99,948 to work with more than a dozen other estuarine reserves to develop a curriculum, resources, and training in conflict resolution. The project, “Resilience Dialogues: Strategies for Conflict Management in Collaborative Science, will be coordinated by the director of the Wells Reserve’s Coastal Training Program, Dr. Christine Feurt. Feurt explained, “For nearly 10 years, our network of reserve sites has been bringing people together to make decisions about protecting water resources in their communities. At times, conflicts arise that challenge a group’s ability to reach consensus. This grant will allow us to discover, evaluate, and share the best techniques for removing barriers so cities and towns can improve water quality. The Wells Reserve will also be involved with a University of New Hampshire (UNH) project to expand the use of genomic research in fisheries management. UNH was awarded a $496,887 grant for “New Technology for Old Problems—Using DNA

Methods to Monitor Invasive Species and Biodiversity in Estuarine Systems. The Wells Reserve will help UNH design and test a DNA-based method for monitoring invasive species and

biodiversity. “Environmental DNA techniques, or eDNA, may revolutionize fisheries field work and population monitoring, said Dr. Jason Goldstein, the reserve’s re-

search director. “Water and sediment carry traces of DNA from fishes and invertebrates that in-

~ Arts and Entertainment ~ OURBIGBAND Celebrates Thelonious Monk’s Centennial KITTERY Monk Dreams, Hallucinations and Nightmares, the new large ensemble recording from Frank Carlberg (on Red Piano Records), draws its inspiration from the work of Thelonious Monk. Celebrated at The Dance Hall in Kittery on Saturday, October 28 at 7:30 p.m., the album taps into the atmosphere and orbit of Monk; infected by, informed by, in awe of Monk, and presented as an act of love and respect. The pieces generate their shapes from splinters, cells and feelings found in and around Monks music, as well as from his verbal utterances in the form of advice and/or cryptic observations. Monk Dreams, Hallucinations and Nightmares is not intended as a tribute album, but rather as, "a celebration of the beauty and vitality of his music that has impacted me profoundly," explained Frank Carlberg. "I thought it fitting to present this recording during the Monk Centennial year, 2017."

Why Monk? Carlberg explains: For me, a Monk-inspired project is quite personal. Monks music has been central to my musical life from very early on. The clarity of his thought, the uncompromising nature of his art, the emotional impact Monks music has made on me; this recording is a culmination of all these elements, and being able to record this music with these remarkable musicians is really a dream come true for me! Monk Dreams, Hallucinations and Nightmares is not your grandfather’s Big Band music. Specifically, it offers new perspectives on Monk’s music, and on compositions for large jazz ensemble in general. It celebrates Thelonious Monk on his centennial while forging new paths in modern jazz by balancing the improvisational impulses with exciting orchestral and structural designs. Tickets are $16 in advance and $20 at the door and can be purchased at www.TheDanceHallKittery.org.

“The Sacred Cod” at First Parish UU Church KENNEBUNK The film, "The Sacred Cod" will be shown at 7 p.m., Friday, October 28, at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, Main Street in Kennebunk. Doors open at 6:30. The event is free and open to the public. The film is co-sponsored by the Sierra Club of Maine and the First Parish UU Church of Kennebunk. Before the film, Dr. Jason Goldstein, the new research director at the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, will offer remarks. Goldstein oversees the Wells Reserve fish studies, salt marsh restoration activities, and long-term environmental monitoring program. "The Sacred Cod" film is an examination into New England's fishing industry. Delving into the drama and disputes that surround New England’s cod fishing industry, “The Sacred Cod” examines a cod population in sharp decline, the scientists and policy makers who are fighting to save it, and the local fishermen who are fighting to save their livelihood. The diminishing cod population in the Gulf of Maine is largely attributed to over-fishing and warming waters, and has drastically changed the shape of the commercial fishing industry in New England. Scientists insist that fishing must be regulated in order to preserve the species, while those who catch it say that

the strict quotas are destroying the only way of life they’ve ever known. Throughout the film, the documentarians juxtapose scientific researchers, government offices, and political figures with men in rubber pants and old tshirts, boats falling in to disrepair, and families who have been fishing on the Gulf of Maine for generations, all of whom have a stake in the cod fishing industry. “The Sacred Cod” explores the issue from all angles, and shows the consequences reaching beyond the fishermen and their families, to local pubs, one of the last icehouses in the region, and more.

~ Ask The Computer Lady~

Dear Computer Lady, Years ago (when I had time) I loved to read your helpful hints and they really got me more computer savvy. Thank you for that. I have gone through several computers in the last few years. Two HPs with cracked screens, Apples (that as a PC person, I could not adapt to), to name just a few. I've been looking at the new Microsoft Surface laptop (although I would miss having the keyboard - not a fan of the little detachable number key pads). I have an old Sony that I think I purchased around 2014, that I loved and then they went out of business. I don't know if it's a crazy idea or if you do this sort of thing, although I've heard you are amazing with computers. So, I figured it never

hurts to ask. Is it crazy to think it might be possible to rebuild the old Sony. To put in a solid state drive, fix the CD/DVD player, add memory, increase the speaker volume and (may not be possible) keep the Adobe Photoshop which came with their bloatwear? Also it runs very hot and might need a new battery. I realize it's probably a crazy idea and I have no idea how much all that would cost (it's possible), but it never hurts to ask, I hope. Thanks for your time, Sally Dear Sally, I am so glad that my newsletters have helped you get more computer savvy! I can do a lot with computers, but rebuilding your old Sony laptop is not really possible, or affordable. Finding

Dear Computer Lady, Your weekly column and E-mails are great sources of information for me and I am grateful to have them. Perhaps you have addressed my question before, but I have not found it. There are times when I want to go through a document and highlight information and put it on the clipboard without immediately using it. I would like to continue to copy information without each copy erasing prior entries. Is there a way to do that in Windows 10? Thanks, Kell Dear Kell, When you copy something in Windows, the item you copy stays on the clipboard until you copy something else, then it is replaced by the new item. I have used a clipboard extender program called Clipmate for

years now, and it is absolutely the most used program on my computer. Clipmate remembers every single thing that I copy on my computer and stores it all in a searchable database. I can organize clips that I use often in folders for safe keeping, and quickly access them for things like blog posts, business receipts and newsletter templates. In addition to saving clips, I use it to remove line breaks, add line breaks in the right spots, remove capitol letters, add then back in the right spot, and even spell check my writing. Clipmate also allows me to copy multiple items one after the other, then either combine them into 1 clip, or paste then in new locations in the same or reverse order that I copied them in. You can find ClipMate at: www. thornsoft.com/. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, What is the latest anti virus you are using and why did you switch from AVG? Thanks so much! Been reading your emails for years. Thanks! Doug in Hampton NH Dear Doug, I am currently using Emsisoft Anti Malware for my security program. I really like the way it works, and how it automatically updates multiple times a day. I have been using and selling Emsisoft for over a year now, and it is working great. Did You Know? According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, e-waste refers to electronic products that have finished their useful life. Televisions, computers, tablets, audio and stereo equipment, cameras, and mobile phones all qualify as e-waste. Many people are unaware of how to safely dispose of such items, and simply throwing them into the trash can be harmful to the environment and even illegal. Electronics can typically be donated or recycled; personal or potentially sensitive information should be scrubbed. This article was provided by MetroCreative. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ 4th Annual All Souls’ Walk at the Museum KENNEBUNK Join the Brick Store Museum for its ever-popular 14th Annual All Souls’ Walk on Saturday, October 28. Continuous tours through Hope Cemetery will begin at 12 p.m., with the last tour departing at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person, $30 per family (max). The narrated historical walks begin at the Brick Store Museum, 117 Main Street, Kennebunk, and cover a half-mile loop through Hope Cemetery, lasting approximately one hour. Costumed interpreters portray

the historical figures, and share their stories of love, loss, and fate. Not too spooky, it’s a perfect activity for the whole family. Tours conclude back at the museum, where guests are invited to enjoy

cider and treats while viewing the museum’s portraits of those highlighted on the walk. Presenting sponsor Avita of Wells and the Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation are proud

supporters of the event. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the museum or at www.brickstoremuseum.org. No advance reservations are required, except for large groups.

The event occurs rain or shine, since a modified indoor version of the program can be presented in the event of inclement weather. For more information, call 207-985-4802.

Storm Warnings Theatre Presents “Our Better Angels KENNEBUNK Storm Warnings Repertory Theatre presents “Our Better Angels, a new play by playwright/director Paul Dervis. All ticket sales will be donated to Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief. Dervis notes, “Due to the on-going needs of the people of Puerto Rico, we want to do whatever we can to help. “Our Better Angels is the story of Jill and George. Jill Chambers, approaching middleage, a graduate of Juilliard and former performing jazz musician, now spends her days in a cubicle settling accident claims, and her nights alone along the coast of Maine. Her prized possessions are an artwork she purchased decades earlier and her beloved grand piano – a keepsake from her concert days. George Shapiro, pushing sixty, has settled into a nondescript life, running his small art gallery with his old college roommate, Hal. His wife, Rita, left him years earlier; her life moving on while his remains mired in lost youth. George and Jill meet at an art opening, both sharing a passion for the artist who created Jill's painting and an affair is born. From steamy nights to missed flights, the two attempt to hold together a relationship that bounces from the euphoric to the lowest depths and back again. (Note: This play contains mature subject matter.) Elizabeth Freeman of South Portland plays the role

of Jill. Stephen McLaughlin of Portland performs the role of George. Jay Weston Jones of Biddeford plays the role of Hal. Rebecca Cole of Windham performs the role of Rita and Shelly Elmer from Yarmouth performs the role of Therapist. Susan Staples from Wilton is the Producer. Avery Lescaleet of Arundel is the Stage Manager. Photography courtesy of Tadin Brown Photography. Storm Warnings Repertory

When Bartus spoke of her husband, the presenter’s equipment started to make noise indicating a spirit was near! Whether you are a believer or not, everyone in the room could recall something they could not quite explain. Partners of EVP, Beverly Young and Caroline Mezoain have been in this field for seven years and enjoy the history and mystery of the business. “We get to learn so much about the surrounding communities and help people to feel more at ease, that they are not imagining things when they say they can hear someone or something they can’t explain, said Beverly Young. It was certainly a fun event to add to the spookiness of the Halloween season.

Fall Exhibitions at George Marshall Store Gallery YORK The fall exhibitions on view at Old York’s George Marshall Store Gallery present the work of four New England artists, each who have a personal point of view and perspective. Grant Drumheller, a professor of art at the University of New Hampshire, is exhibiting two dozen paintings, most of which have been completed in the last year. He has titled his show “New Perspectives, a title that can also apply to the work by the other artists currently showing. Courtney Sanborn completed a masters in painting at the University, however she is exhibiting ten small embroideries, a medium where she can apply her knowledge of composition, color, and gesture, using cotton threads instead of paint. Solo Art Opening YORK Landscape artist Janice Picone Santini’s solo art opening will take place in York Village on Saturday, November 4 and 5. Santini, who has a Bachelor of Fine Arts, is excited to return back to the gallery scene after a nine-year pause to raise her three children. Her show will display over 40 pieces of new work created this year. Janice’s new series is a collaboration of her love of painting big sky landscape oil paintings and her debut of encaustic landscape and nightscapes. After 17 years of producing and selling her landscapes, the encaustic pieces have brought her series to a new level. Encaustic is an ancient medium consisting of a process of applied paints, pigments, layers of beeswax and resin at high temperature. Janice lives and creates her art in York Harbor. "I feel really excited to be painting again. Friends and family have been surprised about the number of pieces I’ve created in such a short time. Its been inspirational to have my children and husband around me while I paint." The opening will be held at The Studio, 250 York Street (below Daisy Janes) York Village. Santini's paintings will be exhibited in the pace with a public opening and champagne reception on Saturday November 4 from 5-9 p.m. Private viewings and art pickup are scheduled for November 5 from 1- 4 p.m. Additional viewings can be scheduled by contacting Janice Santini directly at janicesantini@icloud. com, @janicepiconesantiniart or by calling 207-332-2938.

PDP presents “The Full Monty

OGUNQUIT On Sunday, October 29, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., learn to fold a classic paper crane. In Japanese tradition, the iconic symbol is a wish for hope, peace, health and well-being, and 1000 is a blessing for good luck. Origami is an expressive medium for artmaking, art-taking, and art-giving. Wellness benefits include improved agility and memory, active brain-eye-hand functioning, the confidence of learning a creative skill, and stress reduction through mindfulness. Each crane is a whimsical work of art. This event is an ongoing project of the Art HOPE Youth Service in Health Care Program involving local student volunteers who fold cranes throughout the year for York Hospital Oncology Care patients and community members living with longterm illness. For more information or if you would like to volunteer contact: www.arthope.org.

Art HOPE: 1000 Healing Cranes

KITTERY Patrick Dorow Productions (PDP), the Seacoast’s acclaimed top-quality performing arts and education company, is thrilled to present "The Full Monty" as part of their Broadway in Kittery Professional Mainstage Series. The show is being performed now through November 5. Sponsored by Mari Woods Kitchen Bath Home, the Divas of 18 Congress, Vicky Blodgett, Steppin’ Out Dance Academy and Club Boutique & City Shoes, "The Full Monty" is a ten-time Tony Award nominated Americanized musical stage version adapted from the 1997 British film of the same name. Six unemployed Buffalo steelworkers, low on both cash and prospects, decide to present a strip act at a local club after seeing their wives' enthusiasm for a touring company of Chippendales. One of them, Jerry, declares that their show will be better than the Chippendales dancers because they'll go "The Full Monty"—strip all the way. As they prepare for the show, working through their fears, self-consciousness, and anxieties, they overcome their inner demons and find strength in their camaraderie. With a raucous mix of razor-sharp humor and toe-tapping pizzazz, this

heartwarming, upbeat comedy is a must for any theatre-goers looking for a big hit. Tickets are available at the PDP box office at 170 West Road Suite 15, Portsmouth, NH

WELLS This lovely Siamese, Molly, simply wants a home where she’ll be loved and cherished. But she needs a very special person, someone who will treasure her while knowing that kidney disease will likely shorten her life. Molly, of course, ignores her disease, which she was born with. Siamese are exceptional cats, and Molly may live many years. Her kidneys require a special diet and a pill twice a day, which she takes easily. Safe Haven understands, and is prepared to pay for all her medical needs. We don’t want money to stand in the

way of Molly having a wonderful home. Molly is a most lovely Siamese kitty. Her blue eyes are tranquil and lovely. The grey markings on her cream coat make her a natural beauty. She is young and very social -- with people, but not cats. A typical Siamese, she quickly bonds with humans and requires lots of human contact. She’ll follow you around the house, sit on your lap, climb on your chest. She’s not happy or brave around other animals, so she must be an only pet. Please call Safe Haven at 207-646-1611. SOUTH BERWICK “Kids Helping Kids Great Works School is Proud to Participate in JDRF’s Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes Program. Each day, 40 children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in the United States alone. That’s the equivalent of an entire classroom full of students each and every day! While diagnosis frequently occurs in childhood and adolescence, it can and does strike adults as well. Diabetes is one of the most costly chronic diseases, and children who have T1D will never outgrow it. To stay alive, they must take multiple insulin injections or use an insulin pump, and they test their blood sugar by pricking their fingers about six times a day. Insulin is not a cure! That is why Great Works School is proud to participate in JDRF’s Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes Program. With the slogan “Kids Helping Kids, students will be learning about type 1 and how they can support two of their classmates with T1D. They also will learn what it means to make

Health & Fitness ...NURSES from page 17 work in ambulances, urgent care centers, sports arenas, and other high-stress situations. ER nurses are registered nurses who work closely with doctors to help diagnose, stabilize and manage conditions. They also liaise between family members and other medical staff and educate patients about their conditions once an emergency situation is addressed. Because ER nurses specialize in treating severely ill or injured patients or those in lifethreatening situations, those considering a career in this field must be ready to adapt to many different situations. In a single day, ER nurses may encounter children with broken bones, patients with acute stomach pains and people injured in motor vehicle accidents, among many other potential situations. Patients of all ages come through trauma centers, and prioritizing emergencies can be part of the job description. An ER nurse’s day is frequently stressful and fast-paced. Some of the tasks to be expected, according to the nursing career resource Nurse Frontier, in-

clude: First aid; Suturing; Intubation; Bag valve mask ventilation; Administering medicine; Basic life support; Advance cardiac life support; Transfusing blood. Prospective ER nurses must complete a nursing degree or diploma program. In Canada, since the late 1990s, the provinces and territories have moved from diploma entry level to baccalaureate entry level for RNs, says the Canadian Nurses Association. Both the United States and Canada require prospective ER nurses to pass the NCLEX-RN exam, which is administered by the National Council of State Boards. RNs receive state licensing in the United States. In Canada there is no national license; each province or territory licenses individually based on jurisdiction. According to Johnson & Johnson’s Discover Nursing, ER nurses are increasingly learning about tech, thanks to electronic medical records and point-of-care barcoding. ER nurses have more responsibility than ever because of nursing shortages. That means there are plenty of opportunities to become leaders in the field.

ER nurses and other nurses fill a much-needed responsibility in the medical field. A career as an

ER nurse can be challenging but very rewarding. This article was provided by MetroCreative. The

children, who raised $885 selling lemonade to honor their grandfather, Stoddard Chaplin. Chaplin passed away at Gosnell. His grandchildren, ranging from 5-17 years old, wanted to support a very special campaign that will help ensure Gosnell Memorial Hospice House remains a world-class facility for generations to come. We’re honored to receive this wonderful gift from the Chaplin family. Ten years ago, leaders in our community understood how important it was to have a comfortable place for those needing continuous acute care at end of life, said HSM CEO Daryl Cady. “Through the support of many, our community opened its heart for this need so families like the Chaplins and over 6,000 others may receive the care they need when each moment counts. The Gosnell Memorial Hospice House was built in 2007, in response to a universal need expressed by southern Maine’s medical community and concerned citizens for patients and their families to receive hospice care in a home-like setting from a team of trained professionals, including physicians, nurses, aides, chaplains, social workers and volunteers. The house was financed through a grass roots fundraising campaign. Gifts of all amounts helped bring the plan to a reality. HSM fundraises throughout the year to ensure care is provided for anyone, regardless of their ability to pay. As with any home, periodic improvements are necessary to maintain a modern, healthy environment. Funds raised through the campaign will support updates to patient rooms and family areas. To make an online gift to the campaign, visit https:// tinyurl.com/hzhqe74. When Worlds Collide: History Hike Explores Frontier Raid on the Salmon Falls

Hiking at Brooks Farm Wildlife Preserve, Berwick. (Brenna Crothers photo)

BERWICK The devastating and heroic events of the Salmon Falls Raid of 1690, which shattered a frontier settlement on the upper reaches of the Piscataqua, will be the focus of Old Berwick Historical Society’s History (OBHS) Hike at Brooks Farm Wildlife Preserve in Berwick on Sunday, October 29, from 1-4 p.m. OBHS consulting curator Nina Maurer will relate events that led to the predawn attack by French and Native forces. Hikers will hear about the pivotal standoff at Worster Brook

and the alliances that shaped this region. At Brooks Farm, hikers can enjoy views of Mount Agamenticus, the sweeping meadows of a once active farm and the chattering waters of Worster Brook. The property is located on Route 9, between Old Pine Hill Road and Brooks Lane. This History Hike is the last in a five-event hike series led by historians on Great Works Regional Land Trust conservation lands, which complements OBHS’s 2017 lecture series about cultural fron-

tiers. These programs are part of the historical society’s twoyear 'Forgotten Frontier' project, which brings to light longburied clues about our regional identity. For details on hike sites, visit www.gwrlt.org. Email or call 207-646-3604 to reserve a spot. Free to GWRLT and OBHS members; $5/individual or $10/family suggested donation for nonmembers. Reservations required. Please refer to the GWRLT website for cancellations. For more information visit the OBHS website, www.oldberwick.org.

BUSINESS & FINANCE $454,532 Granted to Build Maine Mass Timber Commercialization Center at University of Maine STATEWIDE The University of Maine System will receive a grant of $454,532 from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to create the Maine Mass Timber Commercialization Center, which will establish a center for forest industry partners, trade organization, construction firms, architects, and other key stakeholders to revitalize and diversify Maine’s forest-based economy by advancing new forest products technologies and bringing innovative mass timber manu-

facturing to Maine. The funding for the Center is a result of the Economic Development Assessment Team’s (EDAT) January assessment that outlined strategies to leverage federal resources to redevelop former industrial sites and support the viability of affected mill communities to grow Maine’s rural economy. The EDAT was originally requested in March 2016 by U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King. The EDAT – an integrated, multiagency team – brought together local, state, federal, and

industry partners to work together to build a bottom-up strategy to foster innovation and commercialization for the future of Maine’s forest-based economy. The report released in January represented the culmination of those efforts and was accompanied by over $1.5 million in federal grants aimed at addressing critical needs. The Maine Mass Timber Commercialization Center aims to boost the local and regional economy in Penobscot County and throughout rural Maine. The Center will partner with

tect-engineering contract will cover services in the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Mid-Atlantic area of responsibility (AOR), with a focus on Maine. The first project for the inspection and observation of construction operations

KENNEBUNK On Sunday, October 29, Christ Church in Kennebunk will present a concert and bratwurst supper to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s historic act that set in motion the Protestant Reformation, by openly challenging the Roman Catholic Church hierarchy on 95 points of Scripture interpretation, or Theses, on October 31, 1517. He was the first to translate the Bible from Latin into the vernacular language of his people so they could read and interpret it for themselves. These events had lasting effects, not just in religion, but

in government, education, and Western culture. It can be said that the Reformation made possible democracy and public education, as well as rising gender equality. The Founding Fathers of America were nearly all Protestant, and clearly believed in the rights of the individual and public participation in government. Public education was seen as foundational to an informed electorate, able to intelligently vote on common issues. In celebration of this turning point in Western culture, enjoy a concert of composers contemporary with and inspired by Martin Luther’s work, including Mendelssohn, J S Bach, Telemann, Praetorius, Pachelbel, John and Charles Wesley, and Luther himself, and then share a delicious supper of bratwurst, hot dogs, potato salads, and coleslaw, in honor of Luther’s heritage. As well as Maestro Warren

King playing piano and pipe organ, and soprano Beverly Heald, performers include tenor Schuyler White, violinist Margaret Hopkins, and trumpeter Thomas Kremser, among others. This concert is open to all, with tickets available at the door or online. Suggested donation for the concert is $15, or $10 for seniors and students, or whatever one can give. Likewise, suggested donation for the supper alone is $10 or $7 for seniors and students. For both events, a single suggested donation is $20, or $15 for seniors and students. Donations of any size, large or small, are welcome, and help support Christ Church’s missions. The church cannot accept credit cards, so please bring cash or checks. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ The Yardbirds at Jonathan’s Ogunquit OGUNQUIT Yardbirds Concert is scheduled to perform at Jonathan's Ogunquit, 92 Bourne Ln, Ogugnquit on October 31, 8 p.m. The Yardbirds continue to hold true to the band’s legacy of masterful musicianship. Led by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer / founding member/drummer Jim McCarty, the band (consisting of guitarist Johnny A, bassist Kenny Aaronson, singer/blues harpist/percussionist Myke Scavone, and lead singer/guitarist John Idan) evoke the essence of the classic Yardbirds sound. An integral part of the 1960s’ “British Invasion, these blues-rock pioneers played a significant role in laying the groundwork for rock music. The band crafted blues-rock / psychedelic anthems “For Your Love, “Over Under Sideways

Down, “Train Kept A-Rollin’, and “Heart Full Of Soul, to name a few -- building an undeniable legacy that still reigns strong in 2017. As stated by TeamRock. com of a recent show “...a rivet-

ing, revelatory 90 minutes, proving that nostalgia can indeed feel contemporary. Purchase tickets at https://tickets.jonathansogunquit.com or call 207-646-4777. Jonathan’s Ogunquit, 92 Bourne Ln, Ogunquit.

Yardbirds Johnny A, Kenny Aaronson, Jim McCarty, John Idan and Myke Scavone perform at Jonathan’s October 31.

American football, field hockey, ice hockey, and basketball are just a few of the sports that make autumn an exciting time for sports fans. Buying, selling, and bartering deer: For information on buying, selling or bartering animals, see Prohibition Regarding Selling of Wild Animals. Visit http://www.maine. gov for more information.

make cheering for a favorite team even more enjoyable. Attend a game: Ardent fans can resolve to attend a game in person this season. Enroll in employee entertainment clubs to receive discounts on sports tickets among other types of entertainment. Host a game watch: Build camaraderie with fellow fans by hosting a game watch. A routine sports night is a great way to get together with friends and family members. Get together with fellow fans at a sports bar or res-

taurant, combining a night out on the town with your passion for sports. Get the kids involved: Spread the love of fandom to a new generation.
