Travis Roy Inspires Marshwood Middle Schoolers

Travis Roy, former hockey star, shares his inspiring story with students at Marshwood Middle School.

By Carin Lee Contributing Reporter ELIOT “Sometimes you challenge life, sometimes it challenges you. It’s what you do in the face of challenge that defines who you are and the direction of your life. That was the theme when Travis Roy, hockey star turned motivational speaker, spoke with students at Marshwood Middle School on October 23. Local businesses P. Gagnon and Sons and Granite Bay Wealth Management supported the visit, along with the

Marshwood Education Foundation. Roy grew up in Falmouth, Maine, where his dad managed the local hockey rink. He put on his first skates at the age of 20 months and cut a perfect path across the ice. He was a natural skater. It was the beginning of a passion. Roy early identified three goals for his life: to play college hockey, to be part of the National Hockey League and to represent the United States in the Olympics. The first goal presented challenges. Roy is dyslexic, so getting the

grades for a hockey scholarship was difficult, plus he was undersized compared to other hockey players, so he had to work harder at the game. But he pushed on, making sacrifices to spend extra hours at the rink. Roy eventually applied to Boston University, whose hockey team was defending national hockey champions, and his hard work earned him a hockey scholarship there. He set a new goal: to become one of 4 Freshmen to make the team. See ROY page 11...
