ARLINGTON, VA For the first time in nearly 100 years, and as part of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Centennial Commemoration, the public will be able to walk on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Plaza and lay flowers in front of the Tomb on November 9-10. The flower ceremony will start at 8 a.m. November 9 with representatives from the Crow

Nation placing flowers at the Tomb. They will recite a prayer in honor of Chief Plenty Coups, who served as a scout for the U.S. Army. Invited by President Warren Harding, Chief Plenty Coups was the sole representative of Native Americans for the dedication of the Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier in 1921. He gave a short speech in his native tongue in honor of the soldier

and the occasion. He placed his war-bonnet and coup stick upon the tomb, which are preserved in a display case in Arlington. For the 100th anniversary of the Tomb, the Chief Plenty Coups Honor Guard is traveling from Montana to Arlington National Cemetery. One of the members of the Chief Plenty See TOMB page 13...

“Ogunquit Spirit of Giving” Collecting for Needy Children OGUNQUIT The Ogunquit Spirit of Giving Committee welcomes all to join in their 17th year of bringing gifts and cheer to needy children throughout the state. Again this year, Spirit of Giving supports the children of two Maine-based organizations: Adoptive and Foster Families of Maine and the Frannie Peabody Center. Adoptive and Foster Families of Maine provides support to families throughout all of the regions of the state. The families all have one thing in common – that they have opened their hearts and homes to children who need loving and safe shelter. Frannie

Peabody Center is Maine’s HIV/ AIDS Service organization. The children affiliated with this program are touched by HIV in some way, whether it be a family member or caregiver with this expensive condition. Ogunquit Spirit of Giving provides gifts to children associated with these programs. In the past, sponsors have purchased, wrapped, and donated specific gifts requested by the children. With an average donation of $50 per child, the group has sponsored 600-650 children in each

KENNEBUNK The Kennebunk Free Library is pleased to announce the availability of newly digitized historic newspapers from our Special Collections. With the assistance of our partner institutions, Osher Map Library and the Maine State Library, and with funding generously provided by the Maine Humanities Council Bicentennial Grant Committee, we have completed a long sought after and much needed digitization project to preserve the content in issues of three local historic newspapers which have been maintained in storage for nearly three decades. The newspapers are: the Kennebunk Enterprise (1904-1920), the Seaside Echo (1901-1907) and

In light of pandemic restrictions, strained resources, and the desire to keep sponsors, volunteers, and recipient organizations safe, Ogunquit Spirit of Giving will not be hosting an in-person party again this year, nor will they be collecting gifts for children. the Wave (1887-1890). While KFL holds microfilm of several other newspapers, these three publications have never been preserved on any other format. Not only has digitization allowed us to make these news-

papers freely available to anyone via the internet, it has also saved the content within the issues from permanent loss due to rapidly deteriorating conditions of the newsprint itself. The Enterprise in particular was badly in need of

preservation due to brittle paper flaking away with such little disturbance as walking by the volumes. As a bonus to readers and researchers- the digitized issues are also keyword searchable! We are very happy to share these publications with you. They are a treasure trove of information about our community and are an invaluable resource for preserving and remembering the area’s history. You will find local news stories, advertisements for local businesses and services, social event columns, editorials, obituaries, regional and national news, and much more, all illustrating what life in the KenSee DIGITAL page 14...
