Spirit of Giving in 16th Year OGUNQUIT It’s that time of year again, when we all feel the Spirit of Giving! The Ogunquit Spirit of Giving Committee welcomes all to join in our 16th year of bringing gifts and cheer to needy children throughout the state. Again this year, Spirit of Giving supports the children of two Mainebased organizations: Adoptive and Foster Families of Maine and the Frannie Peabody Center. Adoptive and Foster Families of Maine provides support to families throughout all of the regions of the state. The families all have one thing in common – that they have opened their hearts and homes to children who need loving and safe shelter. Frannie Peabody Center is Maine’s HIV/ AIDS Service organization. The children affiliated with this program are touched by HIV in some way, whether it be a family member or caregiver with this expensive condition. Ogunquit Spirit of Giving provides gifts to children associated with these programs. In the past, sponsors have purchased, wrapped, and donated specific gifts requested by the children. With an average donation of $50 per child, the group has sponsored 600-650 children in each

of the past few years, growing significantly from the 88 children sponsored in 2004. Like everything else, this year’s Spirit of Giving is going to be different. In light of pandemic restrictions, strained resources, and the desire to keep sponsors, volunteers, and recipient organizations safe, Ogunquit Spirit of Giving will not be hosting an in-person party this year, nor will they be collecting gifts for children. However, in order to ensure a brighter Christ-

Wreaths Across America Updates Technology NATIONWIDE Wreaths Across America (WAA), is the non-profit organization best known for placing veterans’ wreaths on the headstones of our nation’s fallen at Arlington National Cemetery. However, today the organization, in total, places more than two million sponsored veterans’ wreaths at over 2200 participating locations nationwide. In order to achieve this mission, in this challenging year, the organization had to be open to new approaches and partnered with generous organizations willing to share new technologies while helping achieve our ultimate goal of fulfilling the mission to Remember, Honor, and Teach in part by placing veterans’ wreaths at the headstones of all fallen U.S. service members. ing pages for Participating Locations and Sponsorship Groups, providing real-time information to donors and volunteers across the country. In addition, the nonprofit has focused efforts on other owned-media channels, including Wreaths Across America Radio, an internet radio station bringing you a unique mix of music, interviews and entertainment designed to uplift the American spirit during these challenging times and to promote our mission to remember,
honor and teach about America’s veterans. Expanding on the Teach aspect of the mission, WAA’s Mobile Education Exhibit hit the road early this summer. This traveling learning experience helps live the mission to remember, honor, and teach. The expanding internal movie theater and interactive learning displays help remember the sacrifices our nation’s heroes, honor living veterans and teach future generations about the price of freedom.
In the last two years, by partnering with AT&T veterans, WAA has been able to offer a pilot “Text to Donate” program that is allowing donors in several states to sponsor a veteran’s wreath for a family member or loved one from the comfort and safety of their own home. By texting 20222 and a corresponding text code specific to an area cemetery, a contribution can be made over the donor’s phone no matter who is their primary service carrier. All mobile users can obtain a tax receipt for donations made via text message by visiting www.mobilegiving.org/ tax-receipt/. Although the use of social media has been around for some time and become a business mainstay of building a community of supporters, virtual events have also become the norm this See WREATHS page 16...

Last Friday saw 103 new cases of COVID-19, the highest single-day increase in Maine since the beginning of the pandemic. Saturday saw 98 new cases, and one more person lost their life to the virus. Maine’s 7-day positiv-

This past weekend, the nation surpassed more than nine million total cases of COVID-19, and more than 230,000 deaths – about four times the number of American soldiers who perished during the entire Vietnam war. Project Pilgrim Provides Curbside or Delivery for Thanksgiving KENNEBUNK On Thursday, November 26, Community Harvest, a local nonprofit organization, will host the 22nd Annual Project Pilgrim at St. Martha’s Church on Route 1 in Kennebunk. Traditionally, Project Pilgrim is a complimentary Thanksgiving Day dinner for community members to come together and share in delicious food and wonderful company. This year, due to COVID19, the organization is pivoting to curbside pick-up and delivery options rather than a gathered meal. While the organization has long relied on dozens of volunteers to plan and hold the dinner, volunteer opportunities will be strictly limited this year due to the pandemic. Meals will be professionally prepared and packaged by the kitchen staff at Walker’s Restaurant in York. Chef Justin Walker, a longtime Community Harvest volunteer, has generously donated his time and space to this effort. “When I asked Justin for help envisioning how we could continue the Project Pilgrim tradition this year despite COVID-19, the words couldn’t come out of his mouth fast enough,” said Project Pilgrim Co-Chair Mario Barros. “He was ready to jump right in and help us plan the safest event possible. We are grateful to have the support of Walker’s Restaurant to keep this event alive.” Community members are welcome to reserve their com-

Berwick Public Library Civil War Lecture
The 29th Maine regiment was part of a Civil Engineering feat that prevented the obscure Red River Campaign of 1864 in Louisiana from becoming a complete debacle for the Union during the Civil War. In a lecture titled, “A ‘Dam’ Fine Regiment: The 29th Maine and the Red River Campaign of 1846”, Dr. Michael Schroeder will show how this came about and why it is a bit of Maine history that deserves to be remembered. Christmas Fairs Go Virtual in York County
YORK COUNTY Like most popular events that highlight the holiday calendars of community members, Christmas fairs will look different this year due to the pandemic. “The pandemic has affected everyone and some will not be able to donate to our Christmas fairs this year,” said Fr. Scott Mower, pastor of the Parish of the Ascension of the Lord (St. Raphael Church, Kittery; St. Christopher Church, York; Our Lady of the Angels Church, South Berwick; and Star of the Sea Church, York Beach). “Even during these challenging times, we are still working to continue

our mission.” The spirit and parish financial support generated by the fairs remain, only this year, it moves from decorated parish halls and churches to a virtual forum. “We are asking parishioners who can donate this year to support businesses that have supported our parish,” said Fr. Mower. “We are listing the businesses on our website under each of the Christmas fair sections. Some suggested donation items include gift cards, toys, household items, and tools.” Another difference is that, due to pandemic protocols, homemade food items will be replaced by theme baskets. To eliminate overlapping fairs, they
will be held on three consecutive weeks in November. Here are the specifics for each Christmas fair: November 8-14 - St. Raphael Christmas Bazaar in Kittery. For more information, email diannegoedecke@gmail.com or bill.green@portlanddiocese.org. November 15-21 - St. Christopher Holiday Faire in York. For more information. email pelkeye@sbcglobal.net or jcronin2@maine.rr.com. November 22-28 - Our Lady of the Angels Holiday Fair in South Berwick. For more information, email jksheedy@ yahoo.com. Details are available at the Parish of the Ascension of the Lord website: www.pal-me.org.
Kittery Shop Showcases Mexico and Maine Artisans KITTERY During an environmental career that took her to several different countries, Johanna Thomas was struck by the art and artisans of Oaxaca, Mexico and when she returned to Maine she dreamed of showcasing that work. “I watched women working side-by-side in Oaxaca creating these vibrant rugs and wall hangings using traditions and materials that date back centuries,” Zapapa owner Thomas said. “I decided this summer to pursue this dream of sharing their work through opening a shop in Kittery. “Lost Boundaries” Online Screening November 12 STATEWIDE The Maine Historical Society and the University of Maine at Augusta will present an online screening of “Lost Boundaries”, a 1949 film, representing race in Mid-Century Maine. A discussion of the film follows with Dr. Ardis Cameron, USM Professor Emeritus. The event is free, open to the public and will take place online via Zoom on November
12 but registration is required. The film is based on the William Lindsay White’s book of the same name and narrates the experiences of a black doctor who passes for white to work in a New England hospital. Based on the real story of a black family in early 20th century New England, Lost Boundaries was filmed in Kittery and York, as well as parts of New Hampshire,
and released in 1949. Historically, this film is part of the movement that spawned socially conscious films in Hollywood in the 1930’s and 40s, but few such films directly addressed racism in New England. This film provides an opportunity to consider the larger context of racial politics in mid-century Maine and the significance of See SCREENING page 17...

Wallingford Square, is a bright, richly colorful shop that is a feast for the senses. Zapapa’s vibrant rugs, blankets, clothing, wooden carvings, framed artwork and pottery are created by artisans in Oaxaca in patterns and styles that carry on centuries-old artistic traditions. Working with Mexicobased partner Mauricio Sada, Thomas brought back trunks of handmade goods and artwork including colorful “Alebrijes” – handcarved sculptures of animals and mythical beasts – along with natural hand-dyed rugs of deep red, orange, yellow and purple. Zapapa sells embroidered garments, handwoven bedspreads, bags, silk scarves, pottery, figurines of frogs, rams, fish and owls, and a tapestry of the Tree of Life. “The work of these artists deserves to be seen and appreciated and placed in homes where it will be loved,” said Thomas. “The artists love knowing that what they produce in Mexico is creating joy in homes here in Maine.” Zapapa opens on Saturday, November 5 and on November 8 will host a ‘trunk show’ featuring Seacoast Yarnery’s (www. getwool.com) brilliant handmade yarn, sweaters, and blankets. A collaborative approach will connect and coordinate resources to help owners recover and relaunch their small businesses. “The goal of the Resource Center is to get business owners the tailored information they need to manage their businesses through this stressful time. We want business owners to know

New Electronic Social Security Number Verification Service NATIONWIDE The Social Security Administration has begun the initial rollout of its new electronic Consent Based Social Security Number (SSN) Verification (eCBSV) service. The agency is rolling out the service to selected participants through 2020, and plans on expanding the number of users in 2021. “Our new electronic SSN verification service helps reduce synthetic identity fraud by comparing agency records with data provided electronically by approved participants,” said Andrew Saul, Commissioner of Social Security. “This is an im-
portant online service that helps us provide participants and their customers fast, secure, and more efficient SSN verifications.” Social Security created eCBSV, a fee-based electronic SSN verification service, to allow select financial institutions and service providers, called “permitted entities” and including subsidiaries, affiliates, agents, subcontractors, or assignees of a financial institution, to verify if a person’s SSN, name, and date of birth combination matches Social Security records. Delisle continues, “Our mission is simple: To guide and support Maine entrepreneurs in the success of their small businesses. We are dedicated to helping as many Maine businesses as possible through this trying time. We want entrepreneurs and business owners to know they are not alone. We are here and we can help them navigate the right next steps for their businesses.” This robust initiative is funded by a grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration as part of the CARES Act. The additional funds provided to Small
Business Development Centers across the country help to expand advising and training capacity to address issues facing small businesses as a result of the pandemic. “Maine small businesses continue to need support as they work hard to discover what their best path forward is. Regardless of the stage they are at, resources like the Recovery & Relaunch Resource Center will be critical in helping them rebound from the significant challenges many are facing at this time. The Small Business Administration is pleased to support the Maine SBDC in its efforts to provide a wide range of accessible and timely assistance to aid Maine small businesses, our job creators and economic drivers,” commented Amy Bassett, Maine District Director with the U.S. Small Business Administration. Go Red For Women's “Purse-onality” Digital Event STATEWIDE The American Heart Association (AHA) in Maine will hold its 4th annual Go Red “Purse-onality” event on Thursday, November 12. This year’s digital experience will feature a silent auction of more than 25 purse packages donated by local supporters. Each purse is hand-selected and filled with items and mementos that reflect the donors’ “purse-onality” such as work, hobbies or family interests. Channel 8 WMTW Anchor Kathleen Jordan will emcee the event live on Zoom which will celebrate the Go Red for Women movement and help increase research of heart disease and stroke in women. Cardiovascular diseases, which includes stroke, claim the life of a woman about every 80 seconds. As the leading killer of women – claiming the lives of one in three women – cardiovascular diseases takes more women’s lives than all cancers combined. An educational component featuring a local cardiologist and heart attack survivor will provide attendees with a better understanding about women’s risk of heart disease and stroke and will inspire women to take charge of their own health. Women are at higher risk of stroke and some risk factors include pregnancy, menopause and hormone replacement therapy. Dr. Brandei Wingard, Cardiologist and Medical Director at Northern Light Mercy Hospital Device Clinic, will present a short session on women’s heart health and will be on hand to answer questions from attendees. Tracy Grieves of Freeport will share her story to help educate women about common warning signs and why they shouldn’t be ignored. “At 47, I had a heart attack,” said Grieves. “Women lead busy, stressful lives and often dismiss symptoms like the burning sensation in my chest while running that occurred for several weeks. Even though my mother battled heart disease most of her life, I was in denial. If heart disease runs in your family, get your cholesterol and blood pressure checked and take charge of your health.” This Go Red for Women event benefits the American Heart Association in Maine.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, The taskbar on my Windows 10 computer keeps disappearing. I can get it back by tapping the windows key on my keyboard, but then it promptly disappears again. How can I get it to stay? Thanks, Rachel Dear Rachel, It sounds like the taskbar on your Windows 10 computer has been set to auto-hide. When this setting is turned on, the taskbar is hidden until you hover your mouse near the bottom of the screen, or tap the Windows Logo Key on your keyboard. You can turn off the auto-hide settings, just follow these directions: 1. Right-click on a blank spot on the taskbar; 2. Click on the “Settings” gear in the context menu; 3. Click the switch under, “Automatically hide the taskbar in desktop mode” to turn it off; 4. Close the settings menu. You can repeat those steps to turn auto-hide back on. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I was wondering if there was a way to turn on Windows 10 without a password. I know there is for Windows 7 and 8, but this doesn’t work in 10. I would like some help with this. Thanks, Ken
Dear Ken, There is a way to sign into Windows 10 without a password, but only if you are using a local account, not a Microsoft account to sign in. Here is how to check if you are using a Local account or a Microsoft Account: 1. Click on the “Start” button or tap the windows logo key on your keyboard; 2. Click on the “Settings” gear in the start menu; 3. Click on “Accounts” in the settings window; 4. You will see information about your account in the account settings window. If it says, “Manage my Microsoft Account” you are using a Microsoft account instead of a local account; 5. If you want to switch to a local account, there is a link there that says, “Sign in with a local account instead”. If you want to switch to a local account, follow the directions above, and click on “Sign in with a local account instead”. You will need to verify your current password, so type it in and click “Next”. Type in a user name and password (if desired) then click “Next”. Click the button that says, “Sign out and finish” then wait while Windows 10 creates the local account. Windows 10 will restart. If you did not create a password for your new, local ac-

Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am learning to use the Thunderbird email program, and I have one problem that I can’t seem to figure out. When I am sending an email to several people at once, (something I do quite often) I can’t figure out how to add more than three recipients. There are only three “To” lines available, and I can only put one on each line. Hope you can help, Doug Dear Doug, I can help (although I had to do a little research to figure it out). When working on a new email message, it is common
to use the tab key on your keyboard to move from one field to another, but in this case, the tab key simply moves you from the “To” field to the “Subject”. With a little bit of looking online, I found that you just need to press the “Enter” key on your keyboard to move from one “To” field to the next one, and when you have filled in the first three that are visible on the screen, pressing “Enter” again will create a 4th, and then a 5th and so on. Hope this helps with your emails, Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. ...WORK from page 9 ing remotely, strategies for safely returning to the workplace, and the future of the work from home model. Nate Wildes, executive director of Live + Work in Maine, discussed how Maine can use remote work opportunities as one way to attract people to live and work in Maine, and how this can benefit Maine’s economy. Both McGrath and Mitchell emphasized that, for employers with employees working from home during the pandemic, frequent communication and contact with their employees is key to keeping them engaged. Making sure employees have the tools they need to succeed while working remotely is important to their success, and the success and continuity of any business, as is mutual employer/employee trust and accountability. With many employees beginning to return to the workplace, employer flexibility is important to support the needs and various challenges of employees, such as child, elder care, and the health of employees or close family members who may be at higher risk due to COVID-19.
Soliciting feedback from employees through surveys and direct communication helps to understand their needs and considerations in determining returning. Many employees indicate they are more productive at home and cite fewer distractions, better idea generation, and a better work/life balance, while staying connected with the workplace virtually. For organizations whose employees are returning to the workplace, communicating new safety policies, measures and protocols is key to a successful return and the comfort level of those who are returning. “The business leaders who participated in today’s webinar emphasized that agility and resilience are key to their success now more than ever,” said Megan Diver, Senior Government Relations Specialist at the Maine State Chamber of Commerce. “The best practices and strategies presenters shared are crucial to the wellbeing of Maine businesses and their employees during the pandemic and a valuable resource for all employers,
whether in a time of crisis or not. We greatly appreciate the insights of today’s panelists.” “The commitment of Maine employers to the success and safety of their employees is extraordinary,” said Jason Judd, Executive Director of Educate Maine. “Also impressive is the optimism employers shared today. They are making the best of this crisis by leveraging the opportunities it has offered, which include the potential to attract additional remote workers to Maine.” A recording of the webinar can be found at www.mainechamber.org/webinar07.html. ...WREATHS from page 1 year as many live events have had to be transformed from their original live format. These virtual events have allowed us to share a once regional concert, with our entire supporter base, removed 5k races from the bounds of a set course, offered mothers homeschooling their children the chance to share in a pledge of allegiance with their children, and expanded a local flag waving effort to the entire nation. Some of these efforts have even spawned the need for their own new technology approaches. For example, WAA’s race partner CompetitorME began utilizing an App, called RaceJoy, to help track runners and share vital information while participating in a virtual race. And while most theater chains were trying to figure out the business of survival amidst a pandemic Showcase Cinemas made community service a priority by lifting the virtual concert from the pages of Facebook to add it to their newly launched streaming service called Showcase NOW. Matthew 25:35 Meals Find Way to Flourish in Time of Turmoil SANFORD As the rain poured down on an early October night, teens from St. Thérèse of Lisieux Parish in Sanford and Holy Spirit Parish in Kennebunk and Wells remain focused, determined to ensure that those waiting in the long line of cars in front of St. Ignatius parish hall for a free and
June W. Fernald, 90 CAPE NEDDICK – June W. Fernald went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 28, 2020. She had been receiving hospice care following a heart attack. June was born in Bristol, CT, but her parents Henry “Flint” and Mina Warner moved the family to a farm on Logging Road in Cape Neddick when she was nine. She grew up there with seven brothers and sisters. She attended York schools where she was a cheerleader and excelled at math. During her teen years, she and her sister, Ginny and brother, Henry worked at Wheeler’s Inn. They would walk to York Beach after work and then walk back home to Logging Road. At age 18 she met and married John Fernald and moved a short distance down the road from the Warner farm. There, they raised four children, Susie, David, Michael, and Kim. They were married for nearly 38 years until John died suddenly of a heart attack. Following John’s death, she continued to work at the Cliff House as the head of housekeeping and later at Kennebunkport Inn in the same capacity, and in addition, kept their books. She loved to sew and was an amazing seamstress! Her other love was singing and she participated in several community choruses as well as her beloved Cape Neddick Baptist Church choir, where she was a life-long member.
During her senior years, she traveled to Jackson, WY, and Salt Lake City with her daughters and sister Linda to visit grandchildren, Ashley and Chris. Later, at age 86, she attended Chris’ wedding in Costa Rica. She also traveled to Live Oak, FL, many times to visit Dave and his wife, Lawanna and family. June certainly had an abundant life! The love she gave to her children, grandchildren, siblings and friends remains a wonderful legacy. June is survived by her four children: Susie and husband, Terry, Norton; Dave and wife, Lawanna Fernald; Mike and wife, Linda, Fernald; Kim and husband, Brian, Day. She has eleven wonderful grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Her surviving siblings are Henry Warner, Bill Warner and Linda Flowers. She has a large extended family of nieces and nephews. Her husband, John and grandson, Michel Norton, predeceased her. Enjoy, Mom, you’re finally Home. Calling hours for family and friends took place on Friday, October 30 in the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. A graveside service was held in the First Parish Cemetery, York. Donations in June’s memory may be made to Cape Neddick Baptist Church, 34 River Road, Cape Neddick, ME 03902. Visit www.lucaseatonfuneralhome.com for online condolences.

delicious meal would receive one. “It was pouring, but the cars still lined up for pasta,” said Colby White, a senior student and member of Holy Spirit Parish. “We show our dedication to this service, and I think this is one way we can show people their community cares about them.” “It was hard in the pouring rain because our order forms kept getting wet,” said Emma Houston, an eighth grader at Holy Spirit Parish. “One of the best things about curbside though is there are almost no dishes and cleanup is faster!” On the second Tuesday of each month, teens, and a wonderful group of adults overseeing the process, provide free Matthew 25:35 Meals to anyone in the community who gathers in front of the hall on Riverside Avenue in Sanford. Devised in 2017 as a way in which to teach local teens about the importance of service, particularly the Bible verse Matthew 25:35 (“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me...“), the dinners have become so much more. They have built community, delivered smiles to faces that need them, and inspired generosity. “The St. Mary’s Ecumenical Food Pantry in Wells is providing all of our food. Congdon’s Doughnuts provides our condiment containers and flatware packets. When they were trying to get us take-out containers, one of their vendors, Favorite
Foods, decided to just donate a few hundred take-out containers to the project. Parishioners donate gift cards, fruit cups, and cookie packages. After our first meal when it became apparent that we would need portable electric roaster ovens, the Springvale Knights of Columbus just went out and bought them for us. This has truly been a blessing,” said Carolyn Houston, director of faith formation at Holy Spirit Parish. The path to this successful ministry that has grown in size and reach over the last three years has not been without obstacles. Like many programs, the Matthew 25:35 Meals were rocked by the pandemic, unable to operate from April to August. Traditionally a sit-down meal inside the hall, organizers knew for the ministry to continue, drastic changes would need to be made. “Our team at Holy Spirit and St. Thérèse of Lisieux brainstormed about how we would tackle the COVID-19 dilemma and somehow get a hot meal to those in need,” said Lisa White, a catechist at Holy Spirit Parish. “What an amazing team effort it was.” “We were very nervous about how it would go for our first meal since the pandemic began, but at the end of the night, we were thrilled with the turnout and how well our plans were implemented without incident,” said Lisa. “With the teens standing outside taking orders, they were able to be more visible to
the public and interact more with patrons. The teens did their jobs so well. It made me proud to see them at work, making an impact on the community and being the hands and feet of Christ.” The next meal is set for Tuesday, November 10, 5:30-6:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend the event which, of course, will always be held rain or shine. For more information, contact Carolyn Houston at 207-985-6252, 207-646-5605, or carolyn.houston@portlanddiocese.org. ...SCREENING from page 8 setting a story of racial “passing” in New England. Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS This Saturday, November 7, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., Safe Haven is opening the doors of our former thrift shop at 1517 Post Road at the Wells Corner for Shopping plaza, to bargain hunters. Most items will be on sale 50% off, everything from clothing to housewares, books, music, linens. Come shop and have fun with us! We’ll be having more oneday rummage sales throughout the fall and winter. Stay tuned for dates and times. Our shelter is awaiting the imminent arrival of several groups of kitties. Some are being trapped in a local town. They’re a family of kitties who live in the cold, are wary of our humane traps, yet hungry enough to engage with them. Soon they’ll arrive and need all the love, patience, food and medical care your support can provide. Another batch already arrived and, as feared, this family of cats has already crossbred. They weren’t spayed or neutered in time, and now we have a pregnant 9 month old kitten in need of a foster home. Yes, kitties can breed early in life, and before you know it, you have kittens having kittens. Not yet full grown, we want to

Another family of cats was terribly flea infested, so flea treatments have begun to prepare them for arrival. Kittens can die from flea infestation and we’re hopeful we can make them healthy and start them off in a safe and healthy environment to make up for their sad past. The work we do is so rewarding. As Safe Haven’s team of volunteers grows, more people are discovering the wonderful feeling of making a difference in others’ lives. Volunteering at Safe Haven is not depressing. Our cats are not in cages. They’re loved and spoiled. Each will get a great home because at Safe Haven, every cat is adoptable.
