Dynamic Duo Honor the Memory of Departed Veterans BERWICK There have been many dynamic duo’s over the course of history, but none more famous locally than the dynamic duo of Buckman and Vigue. Better known to their friends, wives and fellow legionnaires as Andy and Ron, these two military veterans donate their time and talent constructing hand crafted memorial flag display cases in Ron’s Berwick workshop. Andy initiated the idea in 2013 and since that time, he and Ron have made and presented

more than 40 flag boxes. In creating these beautiful presentation cases they’ve utilized more than a
dozen different types of wood donated either by Kenneth R. Place, (son of award winning Post #79
Historian Robert K. Place), Post #79 Chaplain Paul Lapierre, Jeff Saucier of Hussey Seating Company in North Berwick, or by Andy and Ron themselves. Initially, the glass they used was purchased from the Portland Glass Company of Dover, New Hampshire and paid for by Post #79, but once Manager Nicole Franke became aware of this heartfelt initiative, she is donating the glass. The military decals and plaques/nameplates have been donated since 2013 by Elisha Kinch and Jeff Parmley of
Seacoast Printing & Awards of South Berwick. Andy and Ron cover the cost of the backings and fasteners (the flags are obtained from the government by the respective funeral homes) and have been known to complete each memorial flag display case in as little as two hours, depending on how much coffee they consume! After military honors are performed, Ron takes the flag from the family member to whom the flag was presented and See HONOR page 2...

RSU 21 has welcomed the Wreaths Across America convoy as they head south to Arlington National Cemetery several times in recent years, but every year, the students at KES support WAA by making wreaths, whether the convoy is stopping in Kennebunk or not. Hinkel teaches the children the meaning of each of the ten different balsam “bouquets” that make up each wreath, including “Honesty” and “Integrity,” which are two of the monthly KES Character Traits. The children love the fact that their wreaths ultimately become part of such a major endeavor. Maine Honor Flight Chairperson, Laurie Sidelinger, originally connected KES and WAA several years ago during one of the annual Veterans Celebrations
that KES hosts each November. “It’s so heartwarming to see these young children supporting all of
these wonderful patriotic missions,” said Sidelinger. KES also fundraises regularly for Honor

Flight and has sponsored four WWII Veterans and one Korean War Veteran on their Honor Flight Trips to Washington D.C. “It is such an honor to work with these incredible organizations” said KES Principal, Ryan Quinn. “These veterans and individuals who lead these amazing patriotic initiatives are such incredible role models and living examples for our students of honor, service, integrity and many other important values. They make it really easy to talk about the Character Traits that we teach each month.” The wreath making event on November 15 will be announced at the annual KES Veterans Celebration on November 8, as will the total for the current annual donation to Honor Flight.
Popular Exit Closures Announced for Safety PORTSMOUTH, NH / KITTERY As the Piscataqua Rive Bridge Rehabilitation Project expands, lane and shoulder restrictions on the bridge approaches leave less room for traffic to safely use these on and off ramps. While the following closures create inconveniences, the changes are necessary to ensure the safety of both the traveling public and project crews: Right lane on I-95 South-
bound (Mile 1) at 6 a.m. on 11/12/19, with the lane re-opening by 4 p.m. on 11/16/19. Right lane on 1-95 Northbound (Mile 0) at 6 a.m. on 11/13/19 with the lane re-opening by 6 p.m. on 11/14/19. This event will be free and open to the public, as well as regional veterans, to celebrate their service and talk with Legion
members. Food and beverages generously supplied by local businesses and neighbors. The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. The Web-

SOUTH BERWICK Residents of South Berwick are joining residents of their Sister City in Tuskegee, AL, to recognize the 200th birthdays of both states with a joint project that is focused on registering voters and interviewing 200 people in their communities about why it’s important to vote. The project, called “Together We Vote – Two Communities, One Nation”, will culminate with a booklet and video featuring the citizens of the two towns, which became sister cities in 2017. Video interviews will begin in South Berwick on Election Day and will continue through the fall until 100 people have been interviewed. In Tuskegee, videographers will also do 100 interviews in the months ahead. “We wanted to come up with a way to celebrate together with Tuskegee and also to focus on election year and the importance of voting in our democracy,” said John Klossner, of South Berwick, who is one of the many volunteers doing interviews for the project. Two centuries ago when Alabama and Maine became the 22nd and 23rd states, women and African Americans, who
make up a large contingent of the people involved in the Sister City program, were not allowed to vote, Klossner noted. “This 200th birthday project recognizes that our states and country have come a long way over the years but that we also have a long way to go,” Klossner said. Alabama became a state on Dec. 14, 1819, followed three months later by Maine on March 15, 2020. Maine was created as a free state to balance out the introduction of Missouri as a slave state. At the time, voters in South Berwick opposed the creation of Maine by a 2-to-1 margin saying “inhabitants of this town view with concern and abhorrence the existence of slavery in this country; and consider it a disgrace to a free and Christian land- that it should be not be tolerated.” The 200 interviews will be included in a book, with an introduction talking about Alabama and Maine voting laws. Maine allows same day voter registration, voting by incarcerated people, in-person absentee voting and absentee-voting by mail without a reason. These laws are considered part of the See BIRTHDAY page 11...

MaineDOT, the Maine Turnpike Authority, and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation are collaborating to make necessary improvements to the iconic Piscataqua River Bridge. While there has been minimal disruption over the summer, we now need to close Exit 1 in Maine and the Exit 7 northbound on-ramp from Market Street in New Hampshire. Safety is our top priority, and that is why we need to close these ramps for an extended period. As the project expands, the lane and shoulder restrictions on the bridge approaches leave less room for traffic to safely use these on- and off-ramps. We know these closures create inconveniences, but we trust drivers and residents will understand that these changes are necessary to ensure the safety of both the traveling public and our crews. This federal law outlawed discriminatory voting practices after the Supreme Court ruled that an electoral district’s boundaries could not be created to disenfranchise certain voters. They ruled that Tuskegee lines had been drawn to exclude blacks, which violated the Fifteenth Amendment. In the last decade, parts of the Voting Rights Act have been struck down. South Berwick and Tuskegee created the Sister City relationship nearly three years ago in recognition of ongoing challenges in racial relations across the nation. The mission of

Berwick Post Builds Vietnam Memorial Wall Parade Float
BERWICK When past Post Commander Frank Milinski has an idea, you’d better follow his lead or get out of the way! Late last year Milinski, a 22-year lifetime member with Berwick’s Charles S. Hatch Post #79, saw a video that struck a chord and launched a post initiative that locals are still talking about.
The video showcased a parade float honoring the Vietnam Memorial Wall, created by members of the Solid Rock Baptist Church of Berlin, NJ. For the past ten years, members of the Solid Rock church have constructed patriotic parade floats honoring the greatest moments in American history. Their hope is that others would be inspired to make

a similar impact in their community. This specific float is based on the painting “Reflections” by artist Lee Teter, who wrote out a license to reproduce and distribute prints of this work to members of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 172 of Cumberland, MD (www.vietnamreflections.com). Milinski, a Vietnam veteran, knew immediately that this was a project Post #79 should take on and organized a small committee that took this initiative from the proverbial drawing board and brought it to life. From
January through March, with the assistance and support of Steve Guptil, and Post member Cliff Schweiger, Frank’s committee met to share ideas, research costs and source materials and by early Spring, they had all they needed to start construction. Utilizing a
trailer donated by Post member Robert Allen and using Post Member Dan Flint’s workshop, the float started to take shape. Past Post commander Lou Sanfacon was instrumental in making much of the woodwork. Long time Legionnaires and Vietnam See WALL page 13...

~ News ~ ...WALL from page 12 veterans Phil Jenks, Lynn Rendell, Bob Irvine and Forrest Davis also pitched in, while Kimberly Flint painted the jungle mural backdrop and Donna Flint arranged and installed the jungle foliage. The finished float features two black plexiglass wall panels listing the names of the Maine veterans who were lost in Vietnam, to include two veterans from Berwick who were killed in action (John Knight and Edward Dufault). A man in civilian clothing stands in front of the wall, touching the panel in silent reflection. Behind the semi-transparent wall, is a diorama with an incredibly realistic jungle scene painted on the back along with jungle foliage. Several young soldiers in jungle fatigues stand at the ready, and one of them reaches forward, as if to reach out from beyond the wall to the civilian on the other side. A recording of “Taps” plays in the background. Regardless of your age, experience and knowledge of history, you cannot help but be moved by this float as it passes by. Their Vietnam War Memorial Float generated so much interest that the Solid Rock Baptist Church created a website (www. patrioticfloats.com) with detailed information on how they built their float. While this information provided an important framework upon which to build, it was the Vietnam Memorial wall panels provided by the Portsmouth Sign Company of Newington, NH, that worked miracles for Post #79 and gave the float its “soul”. The parade float virtually came to life when young Matthew Dos Santos, Mat Dupuis and Thomas McIntyre donned Vietnam era uniforms and helmets and stepped into the “jungle”. Most recently, the float was showcased in the August North Berwick Mill Field Festival parade. Other towns and venues have expressed interest in this patriotic float. In between parades,
Traip Student First in Maine to Earn Advanced Industry Certification KITTERY Killian Campbell, a senior at Traip Academy in Kittery, recently became the first high school student in Maine to earn an Advanced Professional Industry Certification using Dana Hall is graciously providing storage. It goes without saying that while this initiative grew out of love of country and pride in our military service, the intangible benefit gained on this most special project was getting to work together, yielding hammers, nails, and paint and swapping war stories, to underscore that Legionnaires are very much, and always will be, comrades in arms.
SolidWorks engineering design software. Killian’s advanced certification is in Advanced Sheet Metal Design. He will soon be moving on to an Expert Certification which is unprecedented at the high school level. SolidWorks is the same software used by most colleges and industry. Locally, SolidWorks is used by the University of Maine and the University of New Hampshire. The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard also uses SolidWorks software. AirBus, the industry-leading commercial aircraft company, intends to design, 3D print, and test an entire aircraft using SolidWorks. Last summer, Killian traveled to Louisville, Kentucky for

Shoes and Their Secret Stories YORK A talk by Kimberly Alexander concludes the 2019 Dessert and Lecture Series, which takes a deep dive into Old York’s collections—exploring the history and context of a variety of objects, from furniture and porcelain to shoes and jewelry. Forgotten in cupboards, pushed into the back of drawers, secreted away behind walls and chimneybreasts, footwear frequently connotes a sense of the mystery of history. Often small, and disarmingly pretty, silk shoes made during the long 18th century are often last-minute additions to a curatorial vignette or quickly cataloged in a data entry project. And yet, the stories cap-

Music, Poetry and Sufi Mystic Stories at The Dance Hall
KITTERY Globally known and revered Sufi musician Latif Bolat comes to The Dance Hall on Sunday, November 10 at 3 p.m. Bolat plays saz and sings devo-
tionals by 13th century poets Yunus Emre, Mevlana Rumi, as well as Turkish folk music. He also recites ancient Turkish Sufi poems and talks about the thousand years of Turkish Sufi mystic
tradition – its philosophy, arts, music and dances. Turkish Mystic Sufi scholar and musician Latif Bolat will present music, poetry, Sufi mystic stories and images from the ancient land of Turkey. Latif Bolat plays Turkish Folk Music and devotional Sufi songs which are called Ilahi and Nefes, from the Anatolian peninsula. The lyrics of Ilahis or Nefeses are taken largely from the great mystic poets Yunus Emre, Niyazi Misri and many other ancient troubadours of Turkey. The program also includes sacred ballads composed by Latif Bolat. Throughout the program, devo-
tional poetry will be recited from 13th Century Sufi poets Yunus Emre, Rumi. One of the most well-known Turkish musicians in the US, Bolat possesses a vast repertoire, ranging from Sufi devotional songs and Turkish Folk music to classical pieces. In addition to his Carnegie Hall concerts and lectures, he has recorded 4 successful CDs, made many TV and radio appearances and composed music for the PBS Documentary Mohammed: Legacy of a Prophet and the George Lucas TV series Young Indiana Jones. He is also the co-author of a Turkish Sufi poetry book titled “Quarrel-
ing with God” which is published by White Cloud Books (Oregon, 2008). Tickets are $14 in advance and $18 at the door and can be purchased at www.thedancehallkittery.org.
Ceramics, Embroideries and Photographs on View YORK Ceramics, Embroideries and Photographs are on view now through November 10 at the George Marshall Store Gallery 140 Lindsay Road in York. From functional to sculptural, the work of twenty-one accomplished New England ceramic artists is showcased. Working with techniques as varied as sgraffito, slip trailing, and combining clay with found objects, these New England artists represent the vibrant, contemporary ceramics being created today. The show is titled “A Community of Potters” Courtney Sanborn pushes the boundaries of the century old art of hand embroidery. Sanborn’s colorful narratives are often described as being a mix of both personal and historical
imagery. Her stories are told by incorporating figures, plants, small monsters, insects and animals into her depictions. At first glance Julee Holcombe’s photographs seem to depict real places and landscapes. One quickly realizes that if these images depicted reality you might not want to go there. Using computer programs she seamlessly combines images of buildings and places from around the country and the world. In “American Babylon” one can recognize some of our local landmarks such as the Portsmouth Naval Prison, waterfronts and mill sites. Much like Sanborn’s embroideries, Holcombe’s photographs suggest a narrative which encourage the viewer to stop and contemplate what is myth and

Recognized for Leadership in Fighting Alzheimer’s WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Susan Collins delivered remarks at the UsAgainstAlzheimer’s 6th Annual Trish Vradenburg Reception, where she was recognized for founding the Alzheimer’s Task Force in the Senate. “Combatting Alzheimer’s requires a unified national effort that transcends politics,” said Senator Collins. “I was delighted to join UsAgainstAzheimer’s to celebrate the 20th anniversary of a major step forward in that effort. In 1999, when I founded the Congressional Alzheimer’s Task Force in the Senate, there was virtually no focus on Alzheimer’s in Washington. Nine years ago, I co-authored with then-Senator Evan Bayh the bipartisan National Alzheimer’s Project Act, which set the primary goal of preventing and effectively treating the disease. That legislation created an expert council, which calculated that $2 billion per year would be needed to make progress toward
that admittedly ambitious goal. Last year, I worked with my colleagues to secure the largest funding increase for Alzheimer’s in history, bringing us above the $2 billion milestone for the first time to a total of $2.34 billion.” The rate of Americans dying from dementia has more than doubled in the United States since

Daylight Saving Time Ends: Time to Test Smoke Alarms! As people have turned their clocks back for the end of daylight saving time, the American Red Cross asks everyone to also test their smoke alarms. “Please ‘turn and test’ to help protect your family from home fires, which tragically take seven lives each day in the United States,” said Jonathan Shapiro, who as Regional Disaster Officer leads Red Cross disaster prevention, response and recovery efforts in Maine. “Because working smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half, we urge you to test your smoke alarms and practice your escape plan with everyone in your household.” The threat of home fires, which are most often caused by cooking and heating equipment, increases with the holidays and cold weather. It is recommended to prepare your household by following these steps: Install smoke alarms on every level of your home. Place them inside and outside bedrooms, and sleeping areas. Test smoke alarms and replace batteries if needed. Test smoke alarms monthly, and change the batteries at least once a year, if your model requires it. It’s also a great time to check carbon monoxide alarms. Practice your home fire escape plan. Include at least two ways to get out of every room. Select a meeting spot at a safe distance away from your home, such as your neighbor’s home or landmark like a specific tree in your front yard, where everyone can meet. Practice your plan until everyone can escape in two minutes or less. The Red Cross has been working with partners to install free smoke alarms in high-
risk communities and help families create escape plans through its Home Fire Campaigns. For more information, visit www.redcross.org/homefires or download the free Red Cross Emergency App (search “American Red Cross” in app stores).

BA Announces Two National Merit Semifinalists SOUTH BERWICK Berwick Academy is pleased to announce two students have been named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists: Ashwin Mahadevan of Madbury, NH (left in photo) and Theo Yassa of Kittery Point (on right). Over 1.5 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. To become
a Finalist, the Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT® or ACT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. From the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists, about 15,000 are expected to advance
to the Finalist level, and in February they will be notified of this designation. All National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from this group of Finalists. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, One thing I don’t like about my new computer. It does NOT have the program for writing letters and etc. Was it the Word Perfect program... I have forgotten in my old age. I am almost 79 now... Ouch. Thanks again for your helpful newsletter, Eve Dear Eve, Every version of Windows comes with a program that you can use to write letters, it is called, WordPad. To open WordPad in Windows 10, just tap the windows logo key on the keyboard, and type, WordPad without a space between the words. You will see a search box in the start menu, and WordPad
will be listed there. Click on it to open the program. You will now be able to type and save your letters. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, We run a small business what PC specs would you recommend I look for when purchasing a new PC (desktop). Thank you, Sherry Dear Sherry, While I don’t know what you use the computer for in your business, I can tell you what to look for to get the most out of your computer and to keep it running your programs for as long as possible. First, don’t assume that your new comput-
er will last as long as your older computers may have lasted. The average computer lasts about 5 years, and as a small business, you should plan to replace your computer every 4 to 5 years. For your new desktop computer, I would suggest you look for a couple of things. First, the processor. Processors have gotten as fast as they can without overheating, so the manufacturers have started putting several processors together on one chip. These are called multi core processors. If you have 4 processors working together, you can process 4 times the data at once. I recommend getting a new computer with at least a quad core processor, 4 cores. If the sales person doesn’t know how many cores are in the computer he/she is trying to sell you, here is how you can check: On the keyboard, press these three keys at the same time: Ctrl - Shift - Esc This will open the Windows 10 Task Manager. If you don’t see tabs across the top of the Task manager window, click “More Details” Click on the Performance tab. CPU should be already highlighted on the left, look at the bottom- right of the window and find the listing for “Cores” to see how many cores the computer has. The other thing you want to have plenty of is RAM. I suggest
you get a computer with 8GB to 16GB of RAM. More if you can afford it. My personal computer has 32GB. If you get a computer with a quad core processor and 8GB of RAM, everything else on the computer will also be powerful enough to run your business for several years. You should know how much data you have and how much hard drive space you will need, but most computers these days come with 500GB to 1TB drives which is more than enough for most people. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am still using Windows 7. Will my files e.g. Word files open properly in Windows 10? Thank you, Martin Dear Martin, Your Word files will open in Windows 10 as long as you have a program installed on your Windows 10 computer that will support them. Either install Office or Word on the new computer, or install one of the open source office programs like LibreOffice at www.libreoffice.org. A good thing to know is that LibreOffice will not only open Word and Excel Files, it will also open Microsoft Works files. Since Microsoft has discontinued Works, this is a good way to access those files that

might otherwise be lost. As for other file types, the same principle applies, if you have the same or newer version of the program you created the files in, you will be able to open them in Windows 10. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Thank you Computer Lady, your emails are so informative. My issue is that I am still using Windows 7, I know Microsoft will stop supporting it in January 2020. Any suggestions until I purchase a new PC. I usually back up my files. Thank you, Sherona Dear Sherona, My suggestion for using the computer after January until you purchase a new one is to use a Linux CD and run the computer from that. Using a Linux Live CD, you can boot your computer to the CD, and use it without using Windows at all. I have set this up for several of my customers who just couldn’t afford a new computer, and it held them over until they saved the money. One of the easiest versions of Linux to do this with is Puppy Linux at www.puppylinux.org. Another version is Linux Mint at www.linuxmint. com. What you would do with either of these is to visit the website, download the .ISO file, use that file to create a CD, then use that CD to start your computer. If all that sounds intimidating, find a local computer shop, and they should be able to create the disk for you and show you how to use it. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Listening Sessions on Paid Time Off Rule Making SPRINGVALE The Maine Department of Labor (MDOL) is preparing for the required rulemaking process for LD 369 “An Act Authorizing Earned Employee Leave” (often referred to as the “Earned Paid Time Off Bill”). The Legislature enacted the bill May 16 and Governor Mills signed it on May 28 of this year; the law goes into effect on Janu-
ary 1, 2021. As part of the process, MDOL will hold a series of public listening sessions throughout the state to hear feedback from the public on what questions they would like addressed during the rulemaking process. The Maine Department of Labor is announcing six additional locations and times for earned paid leave listening sessions
around the state including one in Springvale at the Springvale CareerCenter, 9 Bodwell Court, on Thursday, November 14 at 5:30 p.m. The sessions will run between an hour and an hour and a half. “We are looking forward to working collaboratively with both employers and workers during the rulemaking process,” Laura Fortman, Commissioner of the
Department of Labor, said. “We are committed to a thorough and open process. The effective date of January 1, 2021 provides time for us to work together on this important policy which will allow many Maine workers five days of earned paid leave.” The legislation guarantees earned time off for employees who work for a business with 11 or more employees. Potential Passive Income Streams Jobs may be how many people earn their money, but there are other ways to generate income that may not require the level of effort of a nine-to-five gig. Passive income streams can be a great way to earn substantial amounts of money. Passive income can be earned through investing in stocks, money market funds, real estate, livestock, or savings bonds. Lending money also can provide passive income. Though such income streams are described as “passive,” they require an investment of time and/or money to get started. Passive income streams enable the average person to make some extra money without taking on a full-time job. Unlike active income, where the more you work the more you earn, passive income often generates a flat level of
return over time without the same level of commitment. Passive revenue streams are continually evolving. Modern passive investments are varied, and can include the following ideas. Home-rental service Popular sites like Vacation Rental By Owner (Vrbo®) and Airbnb put interested parties in touch with potential landlords. Vacation property owners or people who do not spend a lot of time at a primary residence may find this is a lucrative way to earn some extra money. Properties located in popular tourist areas may garner considerable income. Digital products Digital items, such as expert advice guides, books, informational articles, digital photography, digital artwork, and more can be sold online. The product only needs to be created
once, and then it can be sold infinite more times to generate an ongoing revenue stream. Peer-to-peer lending According to the financial wellness site MyMoneyWizard. com, peer-to-peer lending (P2P) is the practice of lending money to borrowers who may not qualify for traditional loans. P2P is a growing market that removes large financial institutions from the lending process. Lenders serve as the “bank,” and the consumer pays interest on the principal. The loans can be handled through an intermediary like The Lending Club, which is regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Real estate investment trusts Real estate investment trusts, or REITs, offer the benefits of being a landlord without the hassle of dealing with fixing
broken pipes or handling rowdy tenants. REITs are like stocks in real estate market. You purchase a share in a company that owns, manages or invests in various real estate properties. The higher the dividend rates the higher the risk, so investors must weigh REIT considerations carefully. Passive income streams are another way to earn extra money and can be lucrative for those who take time to invest. nesses with 10 or fewer employees and seasonal employers who regularly operate less than 26 weeks in a calendar year are exempt. The bill required the Maine Department of Labor to promulgate rules to ensure the legislation can be implemented and enforced appropriately. This process will include posting of the draft rules prior to a public comment period. The Department will ensure that final rules are posted with sufficient time for employers to prepare for changes, if any are needed, in their earned leave policies. The law requires that an employee earn one hour of paid leave from a single employer for every 40 hours worked, up to 40 hours in one year of employment. This leave can be used for any purpose by the worker, however they are required to give their employer as reasonable notice as is possible. The rules written will provide guidance to employers as well as workers who benefit from the earned paid time off. The Maine Department of Labor will also provide new posters to employers outlining guidance for the rule.

Repairs That Can Sink Budgets Fast A home is the most substantial investment many people will ever make. Once down payments have been made and closing costs have been paid, homeowners may still be staring down sizable expenses as they begin to tackle any repairs that need to be made. Home maintenance and renovations involve a certain measure of trepidation. Even after vetting contractors and establishing budgets, homeowners may worry that repairs will unearth problems that snowball into expensive fixes. Planning ahead for such projects and learning to recognize issues that tend to be costly can help homeowners weather any storms that may arise. Foundation issues: A strong foundation is key to any home. If there is a problem with the foundation, it can be unsafe
to live in the house. The foundation repair company Foundation Experts advises that foundation fixes can range from $4,000 to upward of $100,000 depending on the scale of the job. Clogged gutters and water pooling around the foundation can contribute to
damage, so water issues must be remedied first. Roof damage: A roof is a key barrier between the indoors and outdoors. Roofs must remain in tip-top shape. The home im-

Good Vibrations Found at Alpha Omega Connections CAPE NEDDICK Karen Blackwell (pictured) describes her business, Alpha Omega Connections, as a healing home. She explained that everything we feel and see is vibration. Even the atoms in our body constantly vibrate. What she did was combine science with spirituality and ancient wisdom to create a healing practice. For this purpose she uses special stones from different parts and depths of the planet, crystal singing bowls, colors and light to open the chakras (portals) of clients to connect with their higher selves, guides and angels. “We provide tools and opportunities for our clients to use the most powerful healer on the planet, which is themselves.” said Blackwell. Blackwell shared, “I have followed a spiritual path my entire life. I knew early on that
I was a natural intuitive who could feel and experience what was happening around me energetically. After some time, I started traveling looking for spiritual guidance and teachings. I started obtaining professional certifications from different organizations and teachers. We are still in contact with all of them,
whether they are still living on the planet or have transitioned. With multiple debarkings and rebirths within this lifetime I became a teacher as well as a student.” Blackwell enthusiastically states that her most gratifying aspect of her work is helping others to heal. “I am honored and humbled to be a part of my clients healing journeys... The healing is not a one time journey, but a lifelong connection between us and our clients.” Lastly, Blackwell sums up her work by saying, “My hope is for all to be able to enjoy the path and journey in this wonderful life we have been given.” Alpha Omega Connections is located at Mountain View Lane in Cape Neddick. Safe Haven Humane Society
WELLS Safe Haven’s shelter is temporarily closed. We occasionally have to do this to prevent cross contamination if some kitties become ill. Meanwhile, the medical team and all our shelter volunteers, including our socializers, keep doing their work and taking excellent care of our beloved kitties. During this time, we want to continue saving homeless kitties, so we are re-emphasizing our home foster program. Last Saturday we matched up ten kitties
Country Time Pet Boarding Kennels 162 Boyd Road Wells, Maine 04090
transferred here from midcoast Maine to their new foster moms and dads (see photo). It was so heartwarming! While these ten kitties are getting settled, we are already planning our next transfer. We’d love more foster volunteers to provide temporary care and housing for the next batch of rescues. If you live in this area, love cats and have a spare room where you can tend to a foster kitty for a few weeks, call Joyce at 207-229-8314. We’ll answer your questions, do a brief home visit, and decide which kitty will be the best match for you.

One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.
missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

A time of visitation followed by a celebration of life will be held Sunday, November 10 at Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick beginning at 1 p.m. with visitation, followed by a service at 2 p.m. ...BUDGETS from page 21 provement resource HomeAdvisor says that a roof repair or replacement can cost between $3,000 and $12,000. But homeowners also must budget for the cost of removing the old roofing materials and fixing any damage to the interior of the home. Inspecting the roof and making repairs as you go is key to avoiding a big headache. Siding replacement: Another costly project can be replacing the siding. Siding may need to be replaced if there is water/wind damage or penetration from insects. Spot repairs may be relatively inexpensive. However, the home improvement resource Modernize says the average siding installation project can cost between $5,500 and $15,000 depending on the materials homeowners choose. HVAC update: Keeping a home at a comfortable temperature is also a matter of safety. If a system gives out, homeowners may be scrambling for a solution. Yearly inspections and upkeep, which includes changing system filters regularly, can help identify potential problems. Neglect is one of the main contributors to the failure of heating and cooling equipment. Based on national averages, a whole-house HVAC system can cost between $4,000 and $12,000. These are some of the more costly repairs homeowners can expect. Keeping on top of the home will help mitigate damage and could extend the life of major home components. Ashwin has been a member of several clubs at Berwick including Chess Club, Mock Trial, and is currently the co-chair of the Math Club. He has competed in Maine Public Television’s High School Quiz Show, was inducted into the National Latin Honor Society, and received a departmental recognition award in math last year. He is also a teaching assistant in an integrated Biology and Chemistry class. Ashwin is currently working on an Innovation Pursuit project (a student-driven endeavor; the subject choice is dependent upon each individual student’s passion) that involves machine learning and chess. His prior Innovation Pursuit explored ways to charge cell phones using wind energy created from downhill skiing. Ashwin also earned the Advanced Placement Scholar Award with Distinction, which recognizes college-level achievement for scoring high on five or more AP exams. Theo Yassa has attended Berwick Academy since the third grade. He is a member of the Boys Varsity Soccer team and a leader of the Coffeehouse Club. He has been inducted into the National Spanish Honors Society, as well as the Cum Laude Society, and received the Johns Hopkins Book Award, as well as departmental awards in physics and chemistry. The Man on the Other Side By Jim Fabiano Another new year has come and gone. The last few haven’t seemed special because I’ve lived through too many of them. I reached out looking for a towel like I do every morning after my shower because I can’t seem to find it through the steam that fills the room. After I dried my face I walked over to the sink in order to wipe off the bathroom mirror so I could continue with the routine at the beginning of my day. I looked into the small hole I made in the steamed mirror and thought to myself, “Hello, who are you?” This couldn’t be me. It must be someone else looking back at me on the other side of the wall. That person has thinning hair in which his hairline was well above the middle of his head. In fact, the hair on his head has evolved into filling up his ears and even most of his nose.

Both teams have since won their first round of playoff games and are now very motivated and very familiar with each other which should result in an exciting game. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. this Saturday, November 9 at York High School.

tive motions, such as running, dancing and jumping, may find themselves battling shin splints. Also known as tibial stress syndrome, shin splints are a condition marked by pain in the shinbone, also known as the tibia. Shin splints are common among athletes and dancers who spend so much of their time on their feet. The Mayo Clinic says shin splints
are caused by repetitive stress on the shinbone and connective tissues that attach muscles to the bone. Shin splints typically appear when there is a sudden increase in distance or intensity of a workout schedule. See SPLINTS page 38...

...MAN from page 33 The person on the other side of the wall has sleepy puffy eyes that look as though they have the weight of the world on them. The person looking back at me has the corner of his eyes pointing down making his eyes look perpetually sad. The man’s face on the other side of the wall looked a bit depressed and worn out. The nose of the person on
the other side of the wall has grown larger with his years. The skin on his nose was no longer smooth. It has funny little bumps on it with tiny purplish veins swimming throughout its surface. The person on the other side of the wall has hair that was primarily gray. Backing up a bit from my mirror I noticed the man on the other side of the wall has grown larger in size. His body seemed to be filled with some sort of liquid that only comes with time. The
...SPLINTS from page 36 Shin splints are characterized by tenderness, swelling, soreness, and/or pain along the inner part of the lower leg. While the pain may stop when the body stops exercising, eventually that pain can transform into continuous pain. Many cases of shin splints can be alleviated through rest, icing and other self-care methods. Wearing proper footwear
and modifying exercise routines can help ensure that shin splints are not a recurring problem. Should shin splints not clear up on their own, or if over-the-counter pain relievers prove ineffective at managing pain, then athletes should contact their physicians. Doctors will likely try to determine if the pain is caused by something other than shin splints.
color of his chest hair matched the color of the little bit of hair that was left on his head. This made his whole body look like a clouded sky in middle March over the ocean after a late winter storm. I now see what this man looks like on the other side of the wall. I begin to wonder what his passions are. I wonder if he has any left. I question if he still wants to change the world. I speculate if he still thinks he has the energy to make a difference in a society he knows was abused over time. I wonder if he still cares? I question if he still dreams about what he wants to be? I wonder if he starts every day in hopes he will be challenged and is energized by the reality that every problem is simply an opportunity. Or did he give up because he let time make him give up? Now that I understand this man on the other side of the wall is obviously older I wonder if he thinks about the importance of
God more than he did when he was young. Now that this man on the other side of the wall is closer to his end I wonder if he cares more about what will be when he finally meets his end? In fact, I wonder if the man on the other side of the world still takes the time to think of such things? I wonder what this man on the other side of the wall wears? I wonder if he still wears jeans every day and doesn’t worry about color coordination or what another guy or girl thinks of him. I wonder if he still likes to wear deep colored pull over collar-less shirts that button down only half way down his front. I wonder if he still refuses to use deodorant or cologne because of his insistence that a man is supposed to smell like a man. I come to the realization I spent too much time with the man on the other side of the wall be-
cause my wife is now telling me it is her turn to use the bathroom. It is also time to do the same things I have done for most of my life. At least the times of my life I still remember. But, before I leave I give one more glance to the man on the other side of the wall. I say good bye to him and feel a deep compassion because he looks so tired and old. I say good bye and wonder if tomorrow I will have the courage to visit again with the man on the other side of the wall? Jim Fabiano is a teacher and writer living in York.
