Students Readying to Radio Astronauts KENNEBUNK Students at Kennebunk’s Sea Road elementary school are continuing to get ready to talk directly with astronauts aboard the orbiting International Space Station (ISS). The Sea Road School serves over 300 third, fourth, and fifth-grade students. NASA indicates the direct radio contact will likely take place this coming January. The New England Radio Discussion Society, a Maine radio club comprised of Federally-licensed Radio Amateurs, known as ham radio operators, is actively helping plan the contact. Significantly, NASA is celebrating its 20th anniversary of Amateur Radio operations on the ISS. The new crew
includes Commander Bill Shepherd, with American ham radio call sign KD5GSL, Soyuz Commander Yuri Gidzenko, and Flight Engineer Sergei Krikalev, with Russian ham radio call sign U5MIR. Just a few days after the new ISS crew arrived, they set up the Amateur Radio equipment. ISS crews will now use the new gear to talk to schools as they orbit the Earth. Here are some typical questions students ask the astronauts: How has ISS changed your outlook on life?; What is your favorite thing to look at in space?; What is most difficult when returning to Earth?; What does it feel like when you are on a space walk?; What
was the strangest thing that’s happened to you in space?; What is your favorite activity when you have free time on the ISS?; Do you think I will visit outer space in my lifetime, even if I never become an astronaut?; What does it feel like to sleep on the ISS?; What mission were you most scared of?; What are your favorite ISS experiences?; What has been your favorite experiment on the ISS?; How many repairs are made aboard the ISS?; What are your three favorite foods on the ISS?; What language has been the most challenging to communicate aboard the ISS?; What food are you most looking forward to See RADIO page 27...

Arundel Town Hall and Community Trails Open
ARUNDEL It was a very special day for Arundel on Saturday, October 17 when both the Town of Arundel and The Arundel Conservation Trust (ACT) had their offi-
cial opening ceremonies on their properties on Limerick Road. The Town opened the new and impressive Municipal Building and ACT opened their Arundel Community Trails. Both or-

ganizations had worked closely together to buy the 47-acre property and a beautiful building and community trail system was the result. A chilly and steady autumn rain did not dampen the spirts of the gathered supporters, but following COVID-19 social gathering rules did limit the crowd to about 45 people. The ACT Ribbon Cutting group included all five Selectmen, the ACT Board of Directors, Bike Trail sponsors and ACT trail building volunteers and families. The ribbon cutting ceremony was facilitated by the Kennebunk-Kennebunkport-Arundel Chamber of Commerce. ACT Board members Tanja Schoenbrod, ACT’s Vice President and Chair of the Trailblazers and Matt Cooper, Chair of the ACT Bike Trail Project did the honors of cutting the ribbon to the new trail system. They, together with the ACT Board and our many volunteers have worked countless hours to make Arundel Community Trails a reality, bringing amazing energy, passion, and vision to the effort.

The newly opened trail system included a first of its kind in Southern Maine, mountain bike flow trail. This bike trail, built by Portland’s Maine Trail Builders, is over 1,500 feet long running through the forest, has more than 60 features such as rollers, berms and switchbacks turns. It is part of a multi-phase mountain bike trail project that when completed next year by ACT, will include a ¾ mile multi-use biking and walking flow trail, connecting to the Eastern Trail where it crosses the Kennebunk River. For donations towards the flow trail project, go to www.arundel.org/actmtb. In the short time since its opening, riders have tried their skill, ranging from Arundel Selectmen Dan Dubois who took a ride with his GoPro helmet camera and stated that he “can’t wait ‘til ACT builds more” to seven year old Luke Wasson, who, when asked by his mother to rate the trial on a 1 to 10 scale, declared the trail a “300”! In addition to the Bike Trail, ACT officially opened their four-season multi-use, dog friendly trail for walkers, skiers, bikers, and snowshoers. The trail meanders through the ACT parcel from the trailhead behind

dant wildlife and marine life found within the park. However, information about these intriguing places and animals is scarce. As a result, the Fort Foster Committee has been raising funds for a comprehensive signage project which will enhance the park experience for locals and visitors alike, while conveying key information. These large, full-color interpretive signs will be placed at key points around the park and made to withstand the elements. The goal is to have these signs installed by late spring of 2021. Donations have been going well, but the project needs one ...ARUNDEL from page 2 several bridges over streams and stretches of boardwalks crossing over boggy patches. The trail also boasts two Eagle Scout projects, one being a 40-foot bridge built by Jacob Pisani of Troop 330 as his project and four 8-foot benches along the trail built as part of Robin Gorham’s project for Troop 304. As noted above, the ACT trail system on Limerick Road and the new Town Municipal Building are a cooperative venture to help our town build community amongst residents of all ages. It’s a special place where “Arundelites” and people from our greater three-town community can gather as neighbors and friends to enjoy what is special about Arundel. Safe parking for the trail system is available behind the Municipal Building and access to restrooms will soon be available during daylight hours at the Community Room entrance. final fundraising push to make the signs a reality. To that end, the public is invited to contribute. Those donating at least $1,000, whether individuals or companies, will have their names tastefully presented on the sign. Those underwriting the total cost of a sign can pick their sign, but the selection is on a first-come, first-served basis. A list of signs is available from the Fort Foster Committee. Contact Gale Turner, project chair, at 207-439-0550 to learn more. People can support the project by donating any amount through the Kittery Maine Improvement Fund. This nonprofit fund is set up to accept donations for improvement projects in the town, and the money would be allocated to the Fort Foster signage. Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Donors can make their contributions by writing checks made out to KMIF and sending their donations to KMIF, Attn: George Dow, 1 Bartlett Road, Kittery Point, ME 03905. Audubon Presents “The Narwhal’s Tusk” YORK COUNTY Have you ever wondered why a narwhal has a tusk? How sperm whales catch squid in the deep dark ocean? Which whale has the biggest tail, lives the longest, and holds the world migration record? Did you know that whale “waste” results in great plant plankton blooms in the ocean that produce the oxygen we breathe and help create more productive fisheries? On Tuesday, November 17, York County Audubon is delighted to host an online Zoom program featuring Maine marine mammal naturalist and conservationist Zack Klyver. He will give a presentation based on a book he is writing titled The Narwhal’s Tusk: the ten most remarkable marine mammal adaptations. Over millions of years of evolution, marine mammal physiology has evolved to take full advantage
of the world’s oceans. Marine mammals occupy all oceans and major rivers of the world. Zack will draw on his personal travels from around the world, including the Arctic and Antarctica, and his encounter with the oldest known living blue whale in the world. Learn all about the narwhal’s tusk, how deep marine mammals dive, how long they live, and other examples of astounding adaptations. York County Audubon will be presenting this program online. It’s available free of charge, but advance registration
is required. To register, go to www.yorkcountyaudubon.org, and click on the link found there. After registering, a confirmation email containing information about joining the program will be sent in return.

YCCC Reveals New Brand, Logo and Mascot WELLS York County Community College is excited to announce a major transformation of their brand, logo and mascot to reflect the positive evolution of the College and a renewed optimism for the opportunities that we provide. Over the last six months the College has evaluated and reimagined everything they do to better serve students, community and beyond. “Find the Fearless You” is more than a new tagline; It is a call to action for students and community. While many in the community understand the need
to prepare for, advance or change careers, there are sometimes perceived obstacles that may delay or deter them from seeking higher education. The College has committed resources to ensure that they remain an affordable and supportive option for all prospective students in the region. The new brand has been designed to position York as the destination of choice for high
school students taking concurrent college-level courses, and for those attending college right after high school, or many years thereafter. As they continue to evolve, the College remains committed to providing an accessible education that effectively prepares our graduates for the workforce with the confidence and fearlessness that allows them to stand apart and go beyond.

International Women’s Club of NE Support Charities for Women & Kids CAPE NEDDICK The International Women’s Club of New England (IWCNE) is a 501C(2) nonprofit organization. The mission of the club is to foster friendship and understanding among people of different nations and to support charities that assist women and children. This year the organization has a commitment to support the following three charities: “A company of Girls” which serves fourth grade through High School-age girls in Portland. They mentor girls through after-school programs in visual and culinary arts and theater. “In Her Presence” empowers immigrant women from different cultures and backgrounds to learn to think in English through contextual conversation classes and workshops which assist women with com-
munity and career integration. “Stop Trafficking Us” is an organization with the mission to educate the public that 1 in 5 children are sexually abused and this abuse is the precursor to sex trafficking, addictions, incarcerations and more. The IWCNE made a commitment to raise funds to support these charities. Because of the obstacles brought about by the corona virus, they were unable to have their usual fundraisers. The IWCNE members came up with creative alternatives, and expect to contribute the same amount this year as they contributed last year. If interested in learning more about the club and perhaps joining them for social, international and charitable endeavors, visit www.iwcne. net or call President Mariene Benoit at 207-251-8430.

~ News ~ Mailboxes of Years Gone By By Jim Fabiano If there could ever possibly be a positive of our present pandemic is we are spending more time with our families. Well, at least our immediate families. My wife and I spend all of our time together even though we would like to be able to spend more time with all of our family but that is another story. In order to keep sane we do a lot of walking around the neighborhood. This gives us a lot of time to observe things we wouldn’t ordinarily notice. One of these things is the variety of mailboxes that are in front of all of our homes. Most of these boxes have the same style. Some are larger than others but the box itself seems to be the same. The posts holding them up drives the distinction between them. Most have a cedar post that gives the mailbox its height so the mailperson, notice how careful I am here, can deliver our mail. When these posts age they go from a light brown to a winter storm gray. Since I live in an established neighborhood most of the mailboxes are into the gray category. Every now and then one sees a new mailbox with a new post. This usually means someone must have run over the old one. Lately the color of these
mailboxes has evolved. Most are black with white numbers but many are now white or gray. Basically they are all the same but a new color explains what the personality is of the people that live in the house. During our walks I’ve seen bright red mailboxes that match the color of the front door. We even pass by a few that have designs painted on them. These people must have grown up in the 1960’s.

We sometimes see people walk from their homes to check their mail. They range in years from very young to very old. They always seem excited to see what the postal service has for them. It is kind of like Christmas every day. Some seem to be relieved because they finally received the medicines they need to survive. I can always tell if medi-
cines were received because they come in white tightly wrapped packages. These same people also demonstrate a relaxed sigh when they receive a pension or a social security check. I don’t feel bad for these people because I am one. Everyone receives bills through the mail. These are just shuffled through and brought

I’ve witnessed young men and women run to the post office to get information about their future in the form of acceptance letters. Usually these are ripped open as soon as they are retrieved. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, Thank you for your very informative and helpful column. I upgraded to Win10 and now my computer can’t keep up with my typing. Is there a setting somewhere? I am a very fast typist but this has got me so very frustrated – it doesn’t seem to always read the letters and sometimes hangs up on a letter or two. Can you help? Thank you, Cathy Dear Cathy, I don’t think it is a setting that is slowing your computer down. It is probably either a driver, or some process running in the background that is having problems. Unfortunately, there is no quick and easy way to isolate the problem. But, there are a few things you can try if you are comfortable doing so. First, go to the website of your computer manufacturer and check to see if there are any new drivers available that have been optimized for Windows 10. Next, open the task manager (you can access it by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del on your keyboard) and click on the “Startup” tab. You can disable a few startup items at a time, restart your computer and see if that makes a difference. It takes time, but you might be able to narrow it down to a single entry that is causing the problem. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Thank you for your column
– I find it very helpful. I recently purchased a new Dell computer with Windows 10 and Microsoft Office. I regularly get messages from Slim Cleaner Plus and Driver Update asking to scan the computer and take appropriate action. These software packages are from Slimware Utilities Holdings, Inc. and came preloaded. There is a charge for each service ($30 each per year). My question – are they necessary? I don’t believe they are, but hesitate to uninstall them. The Driver Update software does state that updates may be available free of charge from the various companies. Please provide any information and/or your opinion on this matter. Thank you for your time, Marilyn Dear Marilyn, No, these services are not necessary. In fact, these programs are examples of bloatware that come preloaded on new computers. The slim cleaner program just does clean up that you can do yourself in Windows, or have done when you take your computer in for a tune-up. You can also download ccleaner at piriform.com and use it free of charge. The driver update software is also not necessary. Many drivers are automatically updated when doing a windows update, and you can manually check for them using Windows

Update in the control panel. I have been working on computers, fixing problems, and doing tune-ups for 20 years now, and problems caused by not updating drivers are few and far between. It is perfectly safe to uninstall those programs. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a Toshiba 1T hard drive with a lot of things saved on it. Lately when I plug in the device to the computer a message box from Microsoft Windows will come up with: “ Do you want to scan and fix Toshiba EXT (H )” There might be a problem with some files on this devise or disc. This can happen if you remove the device or disc before all files have been written to it. It wants to know if I want to: Scan and fix (recommended) This will prevent future problems when copying files to this device or disc. Continue without scanning. I always continue without scanning. I would hope it would fix if I scan and fix, but I do not want to lose files. Can you tell me what I should do. It is frustrating that this is coming up. Please help! Ann
I get this message sometimes as well, although usually with a USB thumb drive, not a larger hard drive. Most of the time, you can scan and fix the drive without losing the files, however, if this drive has your only copy of these files, you should really save them someplace else before you run the scan. If you have files saved on an external hard drive, they are not backed up unless you also save them in another location as well. The hard drive on your computer is a good place to save them, or you can backup to a cloud backup service. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have an iPad that is five years old. I have since replaced it with an iPad air. I want to clean the old one out and gift it to someone who might be able to tolerate the slower speed. If I go to “restore to manufacture settings” (or similar utility) will that clean all identities, photos, e-mails, etc out? And by deleting all of that, am I to assume that it will not bother my new iPad or iMac computers? Thanks very much, Janet Dear Janet,
Dear Ann,
What you want to do is reset your old iPad. This will clean out all your files and settings and reset the iPad back to factory default. Since this process removes all your personal photos, music, files and settings you want to make sure you have everything that you want backed up and/or copied to your new iPad. Once you have everything saved, it is safe to continue to reset your iPad, here is how: 1. On your iPad, tap the “Settings” icon to open the settings app. 2. On the left side of the settings page, tap on “General”. 3. On the right side of the settings page, scroll down to the bottom and tap on “Reset”. 4. Follow the prompts to reset your iPad, if you want to clear all your data off the iPad, be sure to select, “Erase all content and Settings” You will have to tap to confirm your choice a couple of times. Once your iPad has finished the process, you can safely pass it on. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. Safely Use GPS Systems While Driving It wasn’t too long ago that drivers pulled into filling stations and rest stops to pick up maps to help them find their way. But nowadays global positioning systems have rendered paper maps and atlases somewhat obsolete. GPS systems are now so advanced that many even help drivers avoid traffic and/or toll roads. Navigation systems can be used from smartphones or technology built into cars. GPS systems are convenient and often very accurate. But drivers run the risk of accident anytime their attention is diverted from the road — even during momentary glances at GPS devices. The National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration says distracted driving is dangerous and claimed 3,166 lives in 2017 alone. The Ontario Provincial Police say distracted driving continues to be the No. 1 cause of accidents in the province, causing more fatal accidents than any other factor. How can drivers safely use navigation systems while operating a vehicle? The following tips can help. Set the address destination and plot the course while the vehicle is parked. GPS should not be tinkered with while driving. If new directions are needed, or if you need a look ahead at the route, pull over to do so safely. Engage vocal guidance.
Allow the navigation system to speak directions to you so you can keep your eyes on the road as much as possible. Familiarize yourself with the route prior to your trip. GPS systems are not infallible, so you should have a basic understanding of where you are going even if you plan to use GPS. This way you can anticipate turns or highway exits before the alerts and stay attuned to the traffic ahead. Navigation systems may sometimes direct drivers down the wrong side of one-way streets, so common sense should always prevail. Know how to operate the device before driving. Learning the tools and features of the device while the car is in motion is a recipe for an accident. Instead, learn how to use it before hitting the road so you can engage the screen or navigation system as minimally as possible while on the move. Enlist the help of a co-pilot. Ask a passenger to take charge and help with directions so you can keep your eyes on the road. GPS navigation systems come in handy, but they should always be used with safety in mind.

FINANCE & CAREER $17M to Improve K-12 Education During Pandemic WASHINGTON, DC U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a member of the Education and Appropriations Committees, announced that Maine will receive a total of $16,958,613 through the CARES Act to create new, innovative ways to better serve K-12 students during
the COVID-19 pandemic. The U.S. Department of Education contacted Senator Collins this morning to notify her that this grant, which Senator Collins strongly advocated for, was approved. “Educators throughout Maine have truly gone above and beyond to adapt their teach-

Why my work matters ‌
unsuspecting consumers into sharing their personal information. This year is no exception. According to new www.bbb.org/ scamtracker reports, Americans are getting scam calls phishing for their Medicare numbers and other personal information. This year, open enrollment runs October 15 through December 7 for Medicare and November 1 through December 15 for the Affordable Care Act. How the Scam Works You receive a call (or a recorded message) from someone who claims to be helping you navigate your Medicare options. They may call themselves a “health care benefits advocate or a similar title. The caller says they can enroll you in a better Medicare program than what you currently have. This new plan is cheaper, and you can
keep all the same services. To get started, all you need to do is provide some personal information, such as your Medicare ID number. Of course, the call is a scam, and sharing personal information will open you up to identity theft. In another version, the caller is trying to frighten – rather than assist. In this case, they claim that your Medicare will be discontinued if you don’t re-enroll. Fortunately, this “Medicare advisor can fix the situation – if only you share your share personal information. Also, www.bbb.org/scamtracker is getting reports about callers pushing “free back or knee braces. This is Medicare fraud, and you can learn more by going to www.bbb.org. Tips to Avoid Open Enrollment Scams Be wary of anyone who contacts you unsolicited. People representing Medicare or ACA plans don’t contact you by phone, email, or in person unless you are already enrolled. Be es-
pecially cautious of threatening calls that require quick action or immediate payment. Decline promotional gifts in exchange for personal information. Keep a healthy level of skepticism any time a broker offers you free gifts, health screenings, or other special deals. Never sign up with a broker who offers you an expensive “sign-up gift in exchange for providing your Medicare ID number or other personally identifiable information. Beware of dishonest brokers who offer “free health screenings. Some brokers offer this to weed out people who are less healthy. This is called “cherry picking and is against the Medicare rules. Guard your governmentissued numbers. Never offer your Medicare ID number, Social Security number, health plan info, or banking information to anyone you don’t know. Hang up and go to official websites. You can enroll or reenroll in Medicare at Medicare. gov or in a marketplace health plan at www.healthcare.gov. See SCAM page 17...

Governor Mills Announces New Mask Mandate AUGUSTA Last week, Gov. Janet Mills announced new Mask/ Face Covering changes due to the surging number of COVID19 cases in the state. The changes, which affect businesses, include: Face coverings must now be worn in public settings regardless of how far apart residents are from other people; Owners and
operators of all indoor public settings in Maine must now post plainly visible signs notifying entrants of the requirement to wear cloth face coverings, and may deny service or entry for non-compliance; Face coverings are required for all children age 5 and older in public settings, including school and childcare settings, and are recommended for children ages 2 to 4 unless
$10.4M for Maine Nursing Homes WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced that 93 skilled nursing facilities and nursing homes in Maine have been awarded a total of $10,421,700 to support increased testing, staffing, and personal protective equipment (PPE) needs. The funding announced today is a targeted distribution from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Provider Relief Fund, which is funded through $175 billion included in the bipartisan CARES Act and the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act. “In the midst of this ongoing public health and economic crisis, it is crucial that our seniors and all of those who make up our nursing home communities remain supported and protected,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “This additional funding will help protect the health of nursing home residents, prevent and reduce the spread of COVID-19, and support our health care providers on the front lines.” In May, Senators Collins and King announced that Maine nursing homes would receive a total of $17.9 million to help protect the health of residents and staff and support nursing homes struggling with significant expenses or lost revenue due to COVID-19. To date, Maine health care providers have received more than $400 million in relief from the HHS Provider Relief Fund. To further support nursing homes, HHS also announced today the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) will be partnering with America’s nurs-
ing homes to create the National Nursing Home COVID Action Network. Through the Network, AHRQ will offer training, and mentorship to the approximately 15,400 nursing homes across the country to supplement efforts aimed at protecting residents and staff.
deemed developmentally inappropriate. Exemptions continue to exist for those who have serious medical conditions or who are otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance. Previously, only certain types of businesses like large retail businesses were responsible for implementing measures requiring customers to wear face coverings. ...SCAM from page 16 If you are unsure whether a call or offer is from Medicare, or you gave your personal information to someone claiming to be with Medicare, call 1-800-MEDICARE to report it. York Hospital Welcomes New Providers in Pulmonary Medicine and Newborn Telemedicine YORK York Hospital is pleased to welcome two new physicians to its medical staff this month. Ming Hui Fan, M.D., has joined Pulmonary Associates of York Hospital, while Derek Trapasso, M.D., F.A.A.P., has been appointed Consulting Medical Director of York Hospital’s Newborn Telemedicine. Dr. Fan earned her medical degree at Harvard Medical School. While at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, she completed three years of residency in general surgery, along with fellowships, in nephrologyinternal medicine, surgical intensive care and burn trauma, before opting for a change of focus toward internal medicine and critical care. Dr. Fan then completed her residency in internal medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital; this was followed by a Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. Upon the completion of her formal education, Dr. Fan held professorial appointments at both the University of Pennsylvania and University of Pittsburgh Schools of Medicine, followed by positions as a pulmonary/
critical care medicine physician at Washington Hospital and Jefferson Hospital in Pennsylvania. Dr. Fan is now seeing patients at Pulmonary Associates of York Hospital in the clinic, in addition to providing care for those in the ICU. She has a particular interest in interstitial lung disease although she cares for patients with conditions across the full spectrum of pulmonary medicine. Derek Trapasso, M.D., F.A.A.P., the Director of the MassGeneral for Children Community Hospital Medical Program, has been appointed as Consulting Medical Director, Newborn Telemedicine Program at York Hospital. After earning his medical degree from Albany Medical College, he completed his residency Albany Medical Center. Additionally, his undergraduate education was completed at Siena College, Loudonville, NY. Dr. Trapasso has over 15 years of experience in pediatric hospitalist and emer-
gency medicine, with particular interests in newborn medicine, respiratory illnesses, procedural sedation and traumatic injuries. York Hospital’s Newborn Telemedicine Program provides 24/7 telephone and videoconferencing guidance and clinical support by MassGeneral for Children (MGHfC) neonatologists to the pediatric physicians on site at York Hospital. This program grants babies presenting with concerns during the birth process, the opportunity to be cared for by York Hospital’s on-site birthing team, in tandem with the neonatal experts at MGHfC via videoconference in real time. There is growing evidence that telemedicine provides prompt and informed decisions, allowing for either for safe and continued care at York Hospital, or prompt transfer of the newborn to a medical center offering neonatal intensive care. For more information, call 207-351-2273 or visit www.yorkhospital.com.
Sacha Kiesman Promoted at WordLab
UWYC & Ogunquit Rotary Provide School Supplies OGUNQUIT The Rotary Club of Ogunquit recently partnered with United Way of York County to gather much needed school supplies during the annual Tools4Schools program.
BERWICK WordLab®, a state-accredited apprenticeship program and sister company to strategic communications firm Broadreach Public Relations, announced the promotion of Berwick native, Sacha Kiesman. Kiesman, a University of Southern Maine (USM) graduate, was hired to a permanent position at WordLab after completing the 12-month apprenticeship program earlier this year. “Expanding our staff with young, talented professionals is essential to our growth today and into the future. Sacha is poised to make immediate contributions to the firm; and her resilience during the COVID19 pandemic and willingness to step up was commendable,” said Linda Varrell, president
and CEO of both WordLab and Broadreach. Kiesman studied strategic communication and public relations at USM, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 2019. She has also previously worked as a communications intern for Catholic Charities Maine and as a public relations specialist for Amistad Counseling Services. At WordLab, she’ll draw upon
Scallop Fishermen Secure Access to Northern Gulf of Maine Resources STATEWIDE Three years ago, the Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association (MCFA) began working with fishermen and local businesses to improve scallop management and give a voice to scallop fishermen on important regulatory issues. As a result of the work from these efforts, at a virtual meeting of the New England Fishery Management Council, the Council voted in favor of regulations that protect both the scallop resource and the smaller Northern New England scallop fishing businesses. The outcome ensures that there will be a scientifically set limit on scallops harvested from the Gulf of Maine and meaningful investments in science and accountability to ensure the resource continues to grow. The Council also voted to set aside a portion of catch specifically for the federally permitted smaller fishing businesses from Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. The scallop set aside will allow for preferential access for the small boats within this area and create stability for the small-boat fleet moving forward. Scallops are one of the most
valuable fisheries in the United States, but for decades the resource had been absent from the Gulf of Maine. As waters warmed and state fisheries rebounded, scallops begun to rebuild in fishing grounds offshore in federal waters. With the potential growth of the scallop fishery in the Gulf of Maine, access became a contentious issue as businesses from Southern New England and the Mid Atlantic vied for access and control of the fishery. In response, fishermen from around the state, the Department of Marine Resources, Downeast Dayboat, and MCFA worked collaboratively to ensure that the small boats had a seat at the table and were heard throughout this process. “Today was a big win for Maine’s fishing communities and the diverse fleet along our coast. Fishermen and community members came together to make sure that the resource would be protected and that Maine fishermen could continue to land local scallops. This decision and opportunity will help support vibrant working waterfronts and fishing communities in Maine. Ben Martens, Executive Director, MCFA.
...SOLAR from page 9 members at the OPA recognized that while the Legislature is advancing its policy goals, potential exists for customers to get confused as these new policies advance. In anticipation, staff at OPA prepared and released a guide called “Community Solar Offerings for Residential Customers”. OPA personnel stress that
her nonprofit experience to balance technical procedure and humanity while working with clients. WordLab® is a first-of-itskind state-accredited Department of Labor apprenticeship program for public relations specialists under the Maine Apprenticeship Program (MAP). Bringing together recent college graduates in a supervised environment, apprentices work on real-world communications and marketing projects to gain the necessary skills to advance their careers. For more information, visit www.wordlabpr.com.
the Community Solar Offerings program differs from a separate program whose focus is competitive electricity supply options. Staffers have noticed in recent calls that consumers often mix up the two. They urge the public to call the OPA for help if they need clarification, and to read the guidance that the OPA has made available. “Our mission here is to help utility customers, and to protect them,” said Barry Hobbins, Maine’s public advocate. “The guidance we have just released will be an enormous help to customers on the front end of what can be a complex process. If you want to explore community energy projects, avoid potential missteps and tap into solar energy for your home or business, we highly recommend reviewing the very useful information in this guide.” Maine energy consumers may download a copy by visiting www.maine.gov/meopa, or request a copy by calling 207-6243687 or writing opa@maine.gov.

Raymond M. Chase, 94 YORK – Raymond M. Chase passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, November 7, 2020. Together with his wife, he lived out his final months at Durgin Pines in Kittery where the wonderful staff took excellent care of him. Ray proudly served in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Pitt out of San Diego, CA, from 1942-1944. After discharge, he bought the Esso service station in York then became manager at the Badger Farms Creamery in Portsmouth, NH. His love for building became his fulltime career. He taught his sons the trade and worked with them until his retirement. During car rides he was always quick to point out his handy work, everything from renovations to houses built from the ground up. He is survived by the love of his life, Jacqueline (Thomas) Chase who he met in 1951. They were married Easter Sunday, April 13, 1952 in Methuen, MA. They made their home in York where they raised their children. Lisa, Scott married to Mary (Tuttle), Susan, Paul married to Holy (Moore) and Rebecca married to Alex Wiley. Family was everything to “Gramps”. His favorite moments were spent with his grandchildren, Erica Davies of York, Brandon and Jennie (Allen) Davies of Brunswick, Zachary and Alyssa (Spang) Chase of Cape Neddick, and Aaron Chase of Cape Neddick. He was blessed with four amazing great-grandchildren who he loved dearly – Madison, Lucas, Annabelle and Lydia. He also had many nieces, nephews and countless friends who he enjoyed spending time with. He will be remembered for his “rides around the beach”, love of stock car/NASCAR racing and Hogan’s Heroes. His neighbors will think of him fondly sitting on the front porch, often in a winter coat, waving
to them as they walked by. The area kids knew that a quick visit meant leaving with a full Dixie cup of chocolate chips. He was predeceased by his parents Arthur and Hazel (Moulton) Chase, his six brothers Arthur, Roger, Conrad, Gerald, Edward and Dennis and his precious daughter, Lisa. Ray will be laid to rest in the family cemetery by Chase’s Pond. A small, private, graveside service is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to his church where he was an active member for over 68 years – United Methodist Church of York-Ogunquit, P.O. Box 521 York, ME 03909. Barbara Mae Grace, 81 YORK HARBOR – Barbara Mae Grace passed away surrounded by family on November 7, 2020 at her home in York Harbor. She was born on December 1, 1938 to Allen and Eleanor Knapp in Newark, NJ, and grew up in Eatontown, NJ, with her older brother Richard. She attended Drew University in Madison, NJ, graduating in 1961 with a B.A. in English. After meeting Patrick W. Grace at Drew, they married in 1965. Their daughter Miranda was born in 1966. Before moving to York in 1970, they spent a summer on the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge in Lewis, DE. Their son Patrick Allen Grace was born in 1973.
Barbara was an avid history buff, enjoying her 20 plus years teaching in the Living History program of the York Historical Society. This involved wearing colonial costume and teaching hearth cooking to York fifth graders. She was also a docent at the Emerson Wilcox House, Elizabeth Perkins House and Old Goal in York. She also volunteered at the Strawberry Banke museum in the archaeology department. Bird watching was a passion. For 40 plus years she and Patrick counted birds for the annual breeding bird survey of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Her family will miss her excellent cooking, homemade bread and birthday cakes, always from scratch. Gardening was another beloved hobby. Many hours were spent planting bulbs the deer would later eat in spring. She was a master crossword puzzle solver and took yoga before it was in vogue. Knitting and sewing were other pursuits she enjoyed. Barbara was a generous donor to conservation and wildlife causes. Camping in Cobscook State Park was an annual trip she looked forward to. As a lover of all things Anglophile, she treasured the trips she took to England and Ireland. She is survived by her husband Patrick William Grace, daughter Miranda and her husband Sean Ryan, son Patrick Allen Grace, and nephew Joel Knapp. The family would like to
thank her caregiver Sue Bennett and all the staff at York Hospital Home Care and York Hospital Hospice Care. Funeral arrangements are with Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home of York. No service is planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the National Audubon Society or your local animal shelter. • • • • • • • • • •

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

WELLS Cali, a lovely calico, has emotionally adopted two older Safe Haven kittens as her own. Nine-month-old calico Blankie and Lucas, a black and white medium hair male, love her back. The three do everything together. Maybe it’s because Cali looks like their momma, who had to be removed from them after she gave birth to another litter of eight kittens, who needed all the energy and milk she had. Luckily, Cali was in the next room, and looked just like their momma and the trio bonded sweetly. So we want to keep them together forever. ~ Sports & News ~ Update to Community Sports Checklist Released AUGUSTA The Mills Administration posted an updated COVID-19 Prevention Checklist for Community Sports. The checklist, written in close collaboration with public health experts, outlines health and safety protocols for community sports activities to comply with in order to occur safely. The Checklist for Community Sports has been updated to reflect the winter schedule. Additionally, the recommendations in the checklist for the levels of allowable play are now requirements and participants in community sports must wear face coverings during practices and competition, in line with Governor Mills’ new Executive Order. Experience in different states with fall sports shows that face coverings can be safely and effectively worn
during competition. As with fall community sports, specific sports are categorized as low, medium, or high risk and assigned corresponding levels of play. The six levels of play are assigned based on the activity level’s own risk (ranging from skill building to competition), protocols to allow activity to happen safely, and circumstances with COVID-19 in Maine. The winter start dates for these levels are as follows: December 7, 2020: Level 1: Skills and drills sessions at home, alone or with household members; December 14, 2020: Level 2-3: Practices and competitions (e.g. intra-squad scrimmages) within teams; January 11, 2021: Level 4: Competition among teams from the same geographic area.
The start dates of December 7 and January 11 allow for time to pass after holidays when people may be traveling or at gatherings that increase the risk of COVID-19 spread. Start dates for Levels 5 and 6 of competition will be determined in January. The January 11 start date for Level 4 competition will also be reviewed in early January based upon the status of the public health situation at that time. This winter sports schedule is similar to that adopted by Vermont and New Hampshire. The Community Sports Checklist applies to community-based sports clubs, teams, and events. It does not apply to professional and collegiate sports, which are governed by professional and intercollegiate association guidelines as well as applicable Executive Orders.

cautions, the data reinforces the need for community-wide Take Back initiatives. “The importance of the drug take back day is the disposal of unused or expired medications,” York County Sheriff’s Detective Corey Sweatt explains. “By properly disposing of these medications, we all can do are part in protecting the environment and our water supplies. In 2019, we collected 882,919 pounds of unwanted or expired prescription medications nationwide. In the County of York, we collected 7,078 pounds of prescription medications.” In addition to protecting our environment, these events also help keep harmful medications out of the hands of youth. the resources they need to continue to help students graduate and reach their career goals, particularly amid the COVID-19 pandemic.” The Student Support Services Program (SSS) is a federally-funded TRIO program that helps institutions of higher education provide opportunities for academic development, assist students with basic college requirements, and guide students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary educations. The funding includes local Southern Maine Community College $523,776 and University of Southern Maine $261,888, as well as the University of Maine in Augusta $544,741, Presque Isle $358,735, Farmington $338,971, and Orono $668,084.
In light of concerns about COVID-19, various health organizations have issued specific instructions on how to maintain personal safety and cleanliness. These recommendations involve using common household products to sanitize homes, offices and public spaces. As people take such precautions, many are stocking up on extra essentials — resulting in shortages. Everything from hand sanitizers to paper towels may be hard to find on grocery store shelves, leaving some to wonder what they can do to remain safe without sanitizers? The Environmental Protection Agency states that coronaviruses are some of the easiest types of viruses to kill because they have an envelope
around them that enables them to merge with other cells and infect them. If that protective coating can be disrupted, the virus can’t do its job. For those having trouble finding wellknown cleaning agents, these alternatives may suffice. Hot water and soap: The reason hand-washing is at the top of the list of sanitizing methods is because it is so effective at washing away viruses and bacteria. Friction from scrubbing with soap and water can help break the protective envelope, states the EPA. Soap and water can clean all surfaces in a home, especially when applying a little extra elbow grease. Hydrogen peroxide: As people clear isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) off the shelves,
...MAIL from page 13 who first reads and then has their arms fall to their side because they just experienced one of the first disappointments in their lives. The mail and mailboxes have become an intricate part of our lives. In fact, for generations the mail and mailboxes have always been there and probably lost in the concept it has always been there like that pile of dirt in the corner of the room most no longer notice. This brings to my mind all of the items I received through the mail. Cards from lost friends and relatives one hasn’t heard from in decades, notices of
marriages or lost lives, presents promised and presents delivered, letters to Santa from our children in hopes their dreams will come true, and now ballots allowing us to be part of our democracy because the pandemic makes us fear going to polls. Mail delivery people are also an important part of our Americana. I had the same postman for years if not decades. He was a wonderful gentleman with a remarkable smile. I learned about his grandchildren and how much he enjoyed his family. I sometimes ran out to my mailbox in order to see how he was
doing as he handed me my mail. During the Christmas season my wife would buy a small box of chocolates or cookies in order to thank him for being our mailman. He recently retired and I have to admit I actually miss him. If there could ever possibly be a positive of our present pandemic is we are spending more time with our families. It also reminds us as to what is important. By the way, my mailbox is red. Jim Fabiano is a retired teacher and writer living in York. You can contact him at james.fabiano60@gmail.com
do not discount hydrogen peroxide. The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of contact. Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective at combatting that virus as well. Natural items can be used for general cleaning, but have not been endorsed for use on COVID-19 disinfection. In lieu of shortages, white vinegar, baking soda pastes and citrus oils and juices could fill the void of chemically-based cleansers for other home tasks.
