Construction Moves Forward with Berwick Development
Visioning plan of downtown Berwick with 40% green space. Image by Brad Sullivan on https://mainearts.maine.gov/.
BERWICK Downtown Berwick sees a critical investment as Great Falls Construction, based in Gorham, purchases the vacant Prime Tanning Mill. Great Falls, a family owned construction and development firm, has spent the past year in discussions with the town about the site, and is excited to work with the community to realize the vision of a revitalized downtown Berwick. Great Falls has extensive experience with renovations and new con-
struction sensitive to the context of village centers. Their Station Square project in Gorham Village is a 70,000 sq. ft. mixeduse development that includes six commercial units and 33 residential units. Their properties are managed by JCS Property Management, also based in Gorham. Jon Smith, president of Great Falls, takes pride in keeping it local. “For years our team has been ‘Constructing with a Purpose’; by that I mean that our
goal, since we started in1988, is to understand the needs of the local community and work with them to formulate a plan to address those needs. It’s more than just building buildings”. Smith says the Prime Tanning site is a perfect opportunity to do what they do best: collaborate with the community to cultivate small business and residential opportunity, strengthening their sense of place. museum invites donations to its Annual Fund, which seeks to raise $60,000 by December 31 to fuel the museum’s year-round programming, exhibitions, education, and operations. The talk itself will focus on the feast held in Plymouth in 1621 and shared by English settlers and native people, which is often called the “first Thanksgiving.” But that festive meal was not comprised of the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie we now consider fundamental components of the American Thanksgiving dinner. So what did those gath-
ered at Plymouth eat, and what do their foods reveal about who they were? In their illustrated one-
hour presentation, “Displaying Abundance: The New England Thanksgiving,” award-winning food historians Keith Stavely
and Kathleen Fitzgerald will dispel the myths surrounding the Thanksgiving menu and tell the real story of how the holiday developed in colonial New England. Through historic accounts, recipes, and descriptions of how they themselves prepared many traditional dishes, the authors will share their take on the diverse, delicious, and sometimes surprising food heritage of New England. Book signing to follow. To learn more about this program or others upcoming, visit www.brickstoremuseum. org or call 207-985-4802.
Veterans Receive New Honorable Service Coin AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills and Major General Doug Farnham, the Commissioner of the Maine Department of Veterans and Emergency Management, hosted a veteran recognition ceremony at the Maine State House and presented the new State of Maine Honorable Service Coin, also called the Forever Coin, to more than 150 Maine veterans. “Today, we thank those who have borne the battle and honor what they fought for,” said Governor Mills. “Although we can never fully express our endless gratitude for our veterans, it is my hope that they are able to look upon these new Forever Coins with pride, knowing that the State of Maine and its citizens are forever grateful for their service and sacrifice.”

“The Forever Coin represents a sense of duty to country, our state, and of sacrifice and service to others,” said Major General Farnham. “Its heft can be felt in one’s hand and is a testament to the artist who created it – a mother of two veterans – the forge that founded the metal, and the mold that shaped the design. Alongside Governor Mills, it is an honor to thank these veterans and offer them this token of appreciation for their service.” The event, which came ahead of Veterans Day this Monday, was the first public presentation of the newly-redesigned coin that is dedicated to all honorably discharged veterans. Previously, coins had been presented See VETERANS page 4...

However, for the entire month of November, police officers have pledged $100 to forego the traditional grooming policy and grow beards, mustaches and goatees – all in support of Home Base and their mission to provide no-cost clinical care to Veterans and Military Families impacted by the invisible wounds — such as post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury. The movement is spearheaded by MBTA Transit Police and Boston Gang Unit Detective Kurt Power, a U.S. Army Veteran and Purple Heart recipient who sought care for his own invisible wounds at Home Base. “The only wish I have is that we give the gift of hope, hope to all the veterans that don’t believe reintegration is possible. MMS Hosts 19th Annual Veterans Day Celebration
ELIOT On November 1, Marshwood Middle School hosted their 19th annual Veterans Day Celebration. The school-wide assembly, featured various student tributes to approximately 400 local veterans and first responders. Before the assembly, guests form a reception line as every student passes through the line shaking hands and welcom-
ing our guests. A bagpipe processional, played by firefighter Dave McLean, led veterans into the gym to a standing ovation. The Eliot Police Department Honor Guard posted the Colors and Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts led the Pledge of Allegiance. Superintendent John Caverly addressed the audience reflecting upon the sacrifices our veterans have made for our
country. For the next hour several tributes are presented from the student assembly to our veterans in musical selections by our chorus entitled “I Am But A Small Voice”, Canon in D performed by student Silja Pope, and “Armed Forces on Parade” from Grade Seven and Eight band members. Andrew Ryan and Brynn Butler performed an emotional rendition of TAPS

Tributes from each grade level honored our Veterans with powerful and poignant presentations highlighting :”First Amendment Freedoms”, “Mission 22” and “Wreaths Across America”. Principal Tony Bourbon concluded with recognizing the importance of the flag in our society and inviting Marine Joe Wessling, a graduate of Marshwood High School on stage. PFC Wessling thanked the veterans who came before him. At the conclusion of the assembly, veterans, first responders and other guests attended an amazing luncheon served by our students in the cafeteria (complete with the authentic SOS!) Following the luncheon, approximately 30 veterans stayed and shared their stories with our eighth graders in the classrooms. ...VETERANS from page 1 to veterans based on their era of service, but where many other Maine veterans have served during peacetime and in conflicts other than WWII, Korea and Vietnam, MBVS worked with local Maine artist Georgette Kanach to design the State’s first-ever “Honorable Service Coin.” Going forward, MBVS will present the new coin, along with a certificate of appreciation to Maine Veterans in acknowledgement of their service and sacrifice, as part of its dedicated Veteran recognition program.

WELLS In early October, twelve 5th grade students at Wells Junior High School were recognized by their school for being selected Students of the Month for September 2019. They were chosen for this distinction by their teachers for demonstrating the school’s core values of Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Compassion and Trustworthiness. “These are attributes that we want to see from our students each and every day,” commented WJHS Principal Roland (AJ) Dufort. “The 5thGrade has been recognizing
students for a number of years and it helps students to see that displaying our core values and modeling them daily pays dividends. We are really lucky that we have such a large percentage of our students who set the bar for everyone to follow.” Dufort explained why 5thgrade students at WJHS transition so well to the junior high environment. “We have a great 5th grade team of teachers who make students feel welcome and comfortable. Our 5th-graders have their own wing in our building and still spend lots of time with their homeroom teachers.”

~ News ~ Arundel Conservation Trust Opens New Walking Trail ARUNDEL Surrounded by town and state officials, volunteers, friends, neighbors and the community, the Arundel Conservation Trust cut the ribbon on the new Welch Woods walking trail on River Road in Arundel. “Building community, one board at a time,” said Tanja Schoenbrod, ACT’s Trail Master as she had guests in attendance on Thursday, Oct. 24, sign a board to become part of one of the trail’s boardwalks as a way to commemorate the opening of the group’s first trail. Guests -- including Arundel Town Manager Keith Trefethen, Arundel Selectman Velma Hayes and Arundel’s State Rep. Henry Ingwersen, plus Tom Bradbury of the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, Jack Reetz and ACT Board members --– The group enjoyed opening remarks by Board members Joan Hull and Leia Lowery followed by official greetings from Representative and Board member Henry Ingwersen and poetry by Board member Sam Hull at the trailhead, followed by cutting the official KennebunkKennebunkport-Arundel Chamber of Commerce grand-opening ribbon on the project. Those in attendance then enjoyed the half-mile loop through the woods, over the newly constructed boardwalks in spots, to a clearing on the bank of the Kennebunk River. Jack Reetz, a founding ACT Board member, with a little help from his friends, made the trek on the Town of Kennebunk’s beach wheelchair, which has large inflatable wheels also appropriate for trails! On a beautiful fall afternoon as the maple leaves continued to fall, the group enjoyed hot cider and cider donuts thanks to the volunteers who trekked in a portable stove and pop-up picnic supplies for the occasion. Year-round, the trail is an easy hike that leads to a beautiful view of the Kennebunk River on land once owned by avid outdoorsman Richard Welch; he donated land to the conservation trust when he died in 2017. memorating Welch and his generosity. Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 330 in Arundel built two benches for the area for folks to use and enjoy the views. There are also log “stools” cut from a fallen tree nearby to complete the picnic area. Named for Richard Welch who once owned and loved this land on River Road in Arundel, the trail is an easy, mostly flat half-mile walk free and open to
all. Dogs are welcome on leashes, please pick up after your pet. Parking is available in a small
lot off River Road, located about a quarter-mile past Durrell’s Bridge Road.

Attention: I-95 Exit Closures
e t te r G a t e
wa
MaineDOT, the Maine Turnpike Authority, and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation are collaborating to make necessary improvements to the iconic Piscataqua River Bridge. While there has been minimal disruption over the summer, we now need to close Exit 1 in Maine and the Exit 7 northbound on-ramp from Market Street in New Hampshire. Safety is our top priority, and that is why we need to close these ramps for an extended period. As the project expands, the lane and shoulder restrictions on the bridge approaches leave less room for traffic to safely use these on- and off-ramps. We know these closures create inconveniences, but we trust drivers and residents will understand that these changes are necessary to ensure the safety of both the traveling public and our crews. Please remember to drive carefully on the detour routes and observe work zone speed limits. Construction is weatherr rdependent, so this schedule may change. CLOSURE INFORMATION:
• Exit 7 – Northbound on-ramp for Market Street in Portsmouth from 11-12-19 to 5-14-20 • Exit 1 – Northbound off-ramp to Kittery from 10-24-19 to 10-01-21 • Exit 1 – Southbound on-ramp from Kittery from 6-18-19 to 10-01-21 Exit 1, Northbound Detour

Envisioning Downtown Berwick, a report developed by the Town of Berwick in 2014, calls for a community-centered downtown, where residents can walk and bike to stores and businesses. “We see opportunities to support a more vibrant village center by providing services in a walkable setting,” says Great Falls Vice President Cindy Smith, “currently some of the important places such as the library and post office are quite a walk from the center of the Village. We would like to explore bringing those things into the Village.” The mill housed various manufacturing operations from 1877 to 1930, when tannery operations began. Prime Tanning closed the mill in 2008, filing for bankruptcy. In 2016 the site was cleaned up with funding from the EPA’s Brownfields environmental clean up fund. Jon Smith says the site, about 10 acres in the center of the downtown, has the solid infrastructure necessary for redevelopment. He sees an opportunity for an outstanding mix of commercial and residential development, but first wants to hear about the aspirations of the Berwick community. Great Falls has its second listening session scheduled to hear what the local community wants on December 5, 10-11:30 a.m. The location will be posted on Great Falls and the Town of Berwick’s Facebook pages as the time nears. “Now the fun part begins” added Smith, “Our team is excited to get to work and we look forward to engaging with the citizen’s of Berwick”. To stay engaged follow Great Falls Construction and Town of Berwick Facebook pages, use the on-site suggestion box, or contact Julie Smith at 207-839-2744 or email at jasmith@greatfallsinc.com.

~ News ~ Eliot Joins Daffodil Tribute - United We Bloom ELIOT On November 5 Eliot took part in the Maine Suffragist Committee’s “Daffodil Tribute” which marks the 100th anniversary of Maine’s ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1919, giving women the right to vote. The Maine Suffrage Centennial Committee has encouraged everyone around the state to plant daffodil bulbs, the symbol of the Maine Suffragist movement, this fall, during Maine’s Centennial Commemoration, as a tribute to their historic victory. Next year (2020) marks the 100th Anniversary of the adoption of that Amendment to the US Constitution. These Spring blooms will then
serve as a beautiful, living and renewable memorial to the suffragists and the ideal of equality for all. Plantings in Eliot were held at six locations - the Eliot Historical Society’s # 8 School-

STATEWIDE Governor Janet Mills and AARP Maine State Director Lori Parham announced that the State of Maine has joined the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities, a move hailed by AARP as a major step toward making Maine more livable for people of every age. The announcement was made before a crowd of state and municipal officials and statewide aging organizations at the Wescustogo North Yarmouth Community
Center. “Creating age-friendly, livable communities with walkable streets, safe and affordable housing, transportation and access to services will ensure that Maine people of all ages contribute to our state while living with dignity and comfort in the homes and communities they love,” said Governor Mills. “With this designation, Maine now has access to critical data, technical advice, best practices and organizing tools to help us plan for

the future in a thoughtful way and learn from a global network of partners to better serve older Mainers.” Maine is the sixth state to receive the coveted designation; but Maine has led the country for years in the number of towns and counties that have joined the Network, currently at 69, and these towns are in every region of the state. “The designation of Maine as an age-friendly state will ignite important partnerships at every level from our smallest communities to government agencies, and will make Maine an even better place to live for people of all ages,” said Lori Parham, AARP Maine State Director. “On behalf of our 230,000 members in the state, we thank Governor Mills for her leadership. Together with age friendly leaders from across the state, Maine can be the best place to work, play, and retire.” Joining the network is the first step in a multi-year process. Member states and communities are encouraged to plan and implement strategies that best fit the assets and opportunities of that state and community. Work focuses on eight age-friendly domains: Transportation, Housing, Public Spaces, Respect and Social Inclusion, Civic Participation and Employment, Social Participation, Community and Health Services, and Communication and Information.

WELLS Drivers who transport the K-12 students of the Wells-Ogunquit CSD were recognized for their work and dedication during School Bus Driver Appreciation Week, October 21-25. There are currently 19 drivers who work out of the Ledgemere bus barn in Wells. On an average schoolday, they collectively transport approximately 800 of the District’s students over hundreds of miles. This year, drivers received gift bags that included personalized cards of appreciation from elementary students and Dunkin’ Donuts gift cards. They were also served a Monday breakfast and a Friday lunch with food donated by parents of students and Hannaford in Wells. Beginning Monday they were greeted with “thank you” signs along their routes. This annual event is
sponsored by the PTSA at Wells Elementary School with Nicole Iannillo and Kelli Madsen heading the parent organization’s Bus Driver Appreciation Week committee. “It feels nice to be acknowledged,” commented longtime bus driver Paul Littlefield. “Getting students on and off the bus can be tricky sometimes - especially on busy roads. Safety is always the top priority. The cards and treats from the kids and PTSA are great!” Lauren Clark is the manager of the Ledgemere bus barn in Wells. She thought this year’s week of appreciation went “very well”. She added, “We especially loved the cards that we get from the students.” Clark said that anyone interested in a part-time See BUS page 16...

~ News ~ Yearning for the Days When Watching Football was Manly By Jim Fabiano Football season is now in full swing. The lawn and my garden are cleared out and not a weed has a chance to survive the frosts of New England. Today’s stress of family and politics take a back seat to the diversion of hoping our team will once again extend its season and become the greatest team in all history. Tradition has it that every Sunday afternoon my friends and relatives meet in my “man cave” to eat chips and drink beer as we watch our mighty team. At least it used to be that way until the wives of my friends and relatives started to show up. In the midst of cheese trays, paté balls, and vegetable sides I used to remember a time when watching a football game was not as civil as it is today. The boys used to show up around 11 a.m. in order to watch the prepre-pre-game reports on the upcoming game. Everyone brought a six-pack or two in a cooler that was topped off with plenty of melted ice. My responsibility was to make sure I had plenty of chips and onion dip on hand. This food was never placed in a bowl. The bags were just thrown open in the middle of the room Today no one is allowed to come before 12:45 because it
would be unfair to the women to interrupt their preparation time. Plus the downstairs recreation room, that once was called the hole, had to be cleaned and vacuumed. It is also very important I make sure I have enough Chardonnay chilled. In fact, it also became my responsibility to fill the ice buckets so if anyone’s wine or aperitif was not cold enough he or she would have easy access to the ice The football games of yester-year had a bunch of frustrated athletes scream at the television attempting to have the inept coaches of the game hear that any one of us sitting in the hole could manage the team toward victory. Adjectives, adverbs, and some other parts of speech were frequently used and without hesitation. Today language is kept in tow. It is impolite to raise one’s voice above a normal speaking level because that would show we did not respect our wives. Children are now allowed to join us in our weekly tradition. Many are seen in front of the television playing some sort of board game as the rest of us pray they don’t stand up and block our view I also notice the attire has See FOOTBALL page 16...

She said that she currently receives reports from her drivers (up to 12 total per day) of vehicles illegally passing the busses she manages. She stressed that it is critical for drivers not to pass a school bus when they see it stopped and showing warning indicators, including flashing lights and a raised stop sign.

WELLS The Common Loon is an iconic denizen and for many epitomizes a Maine summer. But how well do you actually know the Common Loon? Find out at the Mather Auditorium of the Wells Reserve at Laudholm on Tuesday, November 19 at 7 p.m. This program will start with an in-depth look at the physiology and habits of the Common Loon, including how its body is built to be an effective underwater hunter, and the timing of its arrival on Maine breeding lakes. We will also take a look at the threats faced by loons. Nick Lund is Maine Audubon’s Network and Outreach Manager. A Maine native and well known birder, he writes for publications like Audubon, Slate, Down East, and National Geographic. On the web many follow his entertaining posts about birds and birding at “The Birdist”. Maine Audubon has
worked for more than 35 years to count loons in the state, and to examine the causes of loon mortality. This information has helped inform policies necessary to protect loons and ensure

Ganci. This is not the same musical of Little Women that was on Broadway in the early 2000’s. “Little Women” an American Musical has only been presented as a staged reading, first in Los Angeles and then in NYC. In NYC the staged reading starred Elaine Stritch as Aunt March and Debbie Gibson as Jo. The director, Dennis St. Pierre originally appeared in the NYC reading as John Brook and has been working with the writers to bring this fully realized production to the stage for the first time. When hired to teach theater at KHS, he asked permission of the creative team to take it out of the trunk and dust it off on behalf of the Kennebunk High School students. The music to this score soars and is reminiscent of the big musicals of the 1980’s such as Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, and Miss Saigon. The book and lyrics truly capture the essence of the original material full of humor, emotion,

~ Pets ~ Animal Welfare Society KENNEBUNK Meet our fluffernutters! BRUCE: Hi there, I’m Bruce. I’m a very handsome and fluffy fellow. I’ve been told I’m quite the charmer as I love to get attention from people and I have an adorable head tilt when I’m looking for affection. My ideal home is one where I don’t share with other felines or small children. And trust me, you won’t need any other pets when you have me! When I’m not doling out love I enjoy sitting comfortably near my people or roaming about for the best perch from which I can watch the world outside. ASPIN: Aspin is a sweet and fluffy gentleman. He recently lost his very best friend, so he’s grieving and has been
shy and reserved here at AWS. He doesn’t venture out much from his comfy, cozy bed, but in time, he’ll get more adventurous and be his playful self again. In his previous home, he was keen on being around people and keeping tabs on everyone’s comings and goings. He’s best described as a next-toyour-lap cat. He’ll come up and snuggle in when he’s ready for affection. He is gentle and easy going and will be a wonderful companion to his new people. Aspin is hanging out in one of our staff member’s offices, so you won’t see him in the Adoption Center. Please ask to visit this lovely fluffernutter. He’s worth a visit and a lifetime of love! PANDA: Panda is a sweet,
Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK Introducing “Feeney” & “Wilson”, two very bonded brothers just over 1 yr old who had their entire lives turned upside down a few weeks ago. They came to us after a domestic violence incident forced their mum to sadly surrender them to us. She felt that we would be their best chance at a new life filled with love and a home free from fear. They are terribly sweet boys, a bit timid initially until
they get to know you and then all they want is to be loved upon, played with and their bellies rubbed! They are current on all of their vetting and would need to be be adopted as a bonded pair. They are good with children and while they have not been around dogs, we suspect if the dog was respectful and gradual introductions were made, they would be ok with dogs too. A quieter low activity home would be ideal for these two boys to get the soft
spunky, and independent guy who lives up to his Chow Chow nature. He also lives up to his name with his round plump face and silly antics (which are plentiful since he’s still a young guy). Panda loves to play and romp and will make a very loyal companion. He is nervous around new people at first, but warms up with time. In his previous home, he was the center
of attention as an only pet with two older adults. He may do well with other animals and younger people, but will appreciate a proper introduction first. Panda has a beautiful coat that will need lots of TLC including daily brushing (with an emphasis on DAILY!) and professional grooming. Panda is eager to find his new home and share his love and joy for
living they need and so deserve! Come meet Feeney & Wilson along with some of our currently available kittens and other young adult cats this coming Saturday from 10 a.m. 2 p.m. at our Open Adoption Facility in Sanford at 251 Country Club Rd, Rt 4. Our Thrift Shop at 37 Market St. in North Berwick is currently seeking donations of clean, gently worn, and in good repair Winter Clothing and Outerwear. Donations of such items can be dropped off Wednesday
and Thursday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. during open hours. Please do not leave on the stoop outside after hours as we don’t want such items stolen or ruined by weather. We are also open on Fridays but do not accept donations as we need to get caught up on other donations we receive in huge amounts! To “Help Us Help Them” with vetting, litter and food supplies for the animals currently in our care, monetary donations can be mailed to PO Box 552, North Berwick ME 03906 or PayPal’ed to us at boomeredgewater@gmail.com using the “friends and family” payment option to avoid fees to us or you. No donation is too small and it all benefits our animals 100%! Thank you all so much for your ongoing support of our efforts, it is truly appreciated!
Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Safe Haven always believes our cats are perfect, and once again we have a perfect kitty to introduce to you. Her name is Veronica. She’s only two years old and hails from midcoast Maine. This stunning short-haired buff tiger has a white chest and white paws, and the most beautiful yellow eyes. Veronica is enjoying life in her temporary foster home. Her foster mom, Linda, says you couldn’t ask for a sweeter girl. She is so easy to handle, she even allows her little nails to be trimmed. Linda thinks that the best home for Veronica would be with an older person or couple who are home much of the day, someone who wants a kitty to sit nearby who enjoys being petted or brushed. Linda has another cat and a large cat-friendly dog, and Veronica has no problem getting along with either of them. Sounds like a perfect new family member! If you are interested in adopting this perfect kitty and giving her the forever home she deserves, please call Joyce at 229-8314. Safe Haven’s Adoption Center is still closed to the public temporarily, due to kitty
illness. Of course, our team of volunteers continues to work diligently and we’ll reopen as soon as possible. Due to the closing of our shelter, we are redoubling our efforts at expanding our foster program, so we can continue to save as many homeless animals as possible. Are you interested in learning more about what’s involved in fostering? Call Joyce at 229-8314. Maybe you can’t take in a homeless kitty temporarily, but would still like to help us. We always need donations of canned cat food, preferably Friskies, and clumping kitty litter like Tidy Cat. Because our shelter is closed, please bring your donations to our thrift shop at 1517 Post road in Wells, next to the IGA supermarket in Wells Corner plaza. Our thrift store is open seven days a week: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Our store is the major financial support of our shelter and pays most of the vet bills for the kitties we rescue, so when you shop at our store you’re helping a (literally) like-saving cause. We’re currently accepting donations of good quality

BUSINESS & FINANCE YCCC Now Offers Credit for Veterinary Techs
WELLS On Friday, October 25, the Veterinary Technology program at York County Community College held the first event offering Continuing Education credits for Veterinary Technicians as well as the first organizational meeting for a Maine Veterinary Technician’s Association. Adrienne Kruzer RVT, LVT, of Nutramax Labs, has generously flown up from South Carolina to present to the students in the Animal Nutrition course at YCCC but this time her presentation was available to the broader audience of all area Veterinary Technicians providing the opportunity for continuing education credits. After the presentation, students and graduates of the YCCC Veterinary Technology program, led by the program Department Chair, Peg Wheeler MS, LVT, and supported by the Executive Director of the Maine Veterinary Medical Association, Katherine Soverel, held the first organizational meeting of a Maine Veterinary Technician’s Association. In 2012 YCCC began the work of building an accredited program in veterinary technology. In 2013, Wheeler was hired to design the curriculum and take the program through accreditation with the national accreditor, the American Veterinary Medical Association. The program received its Initial Accreditation status in 2016 as they saw their first cohort of graduates leave and enter the work place. Students that graduate from AVMA accredited
veterinary technology programs are required to sit for a national exam in order to receive their license as veterinary technicians. The success rate of YCCC veterinary technology students has been excellent as has been their success in finding employment in the field. Nearly all graduates of the program are hired in veterinary practices prior to graduation and they can continue to re-
PORTLAND AARP Foundation TaxAide has kicked off volunteer recruitment for its Tax-Aide program, the nation’s largest volunteer-run tax-preparation service. The Foundation is looking to expand its team of volunteers for the upcoming tax season and is accepting new volunteers. Tax-Aide offers free inperson tax preparation and assistance to low- and moderateincome individuals nationwide. Volunteers make a difference in their communities by helping taxpayers, and their families, who might otherwise miss out on the tax credits and deductions they’ve earned. There are a variety of volunteer roles, including tax preparers, client facilitators, those who can provide technical and management assistance, and interpreters. Every level of experience is welcome. Volunteer tax preparers complete tax preparation training and IRS certification.

This accomplishment marked was one of two important goals for Wheeler, the next one being to get the Maine Veterinary Technician’s Association functioning as a continuing resource for students. This Association will offer students a vehicle

Nationally, there is an initiative moving forward in the pilot stages to change the job title from Veterinary Technician to Veterinary Nurse. Tips for Choosing 401(k) Investments Saving for retirement is an essential component of financial planning. Adults can save for retirement in various ways, and one of the simplest, most popular ways to do so is to enroll in an employer-sponsored 401(k) plan. Enrolling in a 401(k) plan can be a wise decision. According to a recent report from Fidelity Investments, the average 401(k) balance rose 8 percent in the first quarter of 2019. Investors seem to be taking notice of such returns, as Fidelity also noted that the average 401(k) employee contribution reached $2,370 in the first quarter of 2019, marking a 15 a percent increase from the year prior. When enrolling in a 401(k) plan, professionals may wonder how to choose their investments. Such plans typically include an assortment of funds. There are a host of factors to consider when choosing 401(k) investments,
and the following are some strategies that can help investors make decisions they’re comfortable with. Read the enrollment brochure. Brochures might not be the most exciting reads, but 401(k) brochures, which should be provided when employees enroll in a plan, typically include a detailed rundown of the investment options within a given plan. As valuable as these rundowns can be, a recent survey from Prudential Investments found that 42 percent of investors don’t know how their retirement assets are being allocated. Investors who know how their 401(k) contributions are being allocated are in better position to address market fluctuations, giving them more control over their money. Involve a financial planner in your 401(k). Financial planners can be an invaluable
resource that can help investors in myriad ways. Some investors may be surprised to learn that outside planners can even help them with their employer-sponsored 401(k) plans. Provide a planner with detailed information about your 401(k), including a rundown of the plan’s investment options, and See TAX page 35...

~ Technology ~ Ask The Computer Lady
Dear Computer Lady, How do you remove (get rid of) the activity log on Facebook? I enjoy playing GSN slot games often and was shocked to see it being tracked on my Facebook activity. I am fairly new to Facebook and do not appreciate this activity showing on Facebook for everyone to see. Thank you for your response, Sar Dear Sar, When you log into your account in Facebook, you can see your activity log, but you cannot view anyone else’s activity log. The same thing is true for other facebook users. They will be able to see their own activity log, but they will not be able to see yours. Here is what Facebook has to say about the activity log: “The activity log is a tool for you to review and manage what you’ve personally shared on Facebook and only you can see it.”
You can actually use your activity log to manage your timeline (which other people can see) and remove things that you don’t want to be public. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, How can I stop Facebook from sending me an email whenever my friends post something on Facebook? Joyce
Dear Computer Lady, Thank you for your very informative and helpful newsletter. I upgraded to Win10 and now my computer can’t keep up with my typing. Is there a setting somewhere? I am a very fast typist but this has got me so very frustrated – it doesn’t seem to always read the letters and sometimes hangs up on a letter or two. Can you help? Thank you, Cathy from Ireland
Dear Joyce, You can easily control when Facebook sends you an email alert and when it doesn’t. Let’s take a look: First, log into Facebook, and click on the page of a friend you want to change settings for. At the top of the page, to the right of your friend’s name, is a small box that says, “Friends” with a check mark in front of it, and a triangle after. Click on that triangle to access a drop-down list. The first item on the dropdown list is, “Get Notifications” You should have a check
Do A Digital Detox! “Cleanse” diets are designed to help people clear their bodies of foods that might have an adverse effect on their health. Many people find such diets effective, prompting others to wonder if a digital cleanse, particularly while on vacation, might produce equally beneficial results. Advances in technology make it possible for people to essentially be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Free Wi-Fi is available at restaurants, rest stops and hotels and beckoning people to stay connected. In fact, according to information from Hotels.com, free hotel Wi-Fi has become the most sought after amenity at resorts and places to stay. But is there a price to pay by remaining so available to work and other outside influences while traveling for recreation? Studies have shown that unplugging while on vacation — or at other times — can boost meaningful conversations and more. The study, “Can you connect with me now? How the presence of mobile communication technology influences face-to-face conversation quality,” indicates devices can
negatively impact closeness, connection and conversation quality, essentially interfering with human relationships. Phones and other digital devices also force people to multitask. Evidence suggests that multitasking isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, leading to preventable errors and actually delaying the completion of tasks. A 2010 study from researchers in France found that the human brain can handle two complicated tasks relatively easily because it has two lobes that can divide responsibility equally between the two. Add a third task, however, and it can overwhelm the frontal cortex and increase mistakes. Trying to multitask on vacation can lead to stressful feelings and not being fully immersed in the experience. Being connected while on vacation may leave a person dealing with stresses they normally would avoid until returning home. A study published in the journal Applied Research in Quality of Life indicates that stress accrued on vacation can cause people to feel like they had lower energy at work after returning from a relaxing vaca-
Dear Cathy, I don’t think it is a setting that is slowing your computer down. It is probably either a driver, or some process running in the background that is having problems. Unfortunately, there is no
quick and easy way to isolate the problem. But, there are a few things you can try if you are comfortable doing so. First, go to the website of your computer manufacturer and check to see if there are any new drivers available that have been optimized for Windows 10. Next, open the task manager (you can access it by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del on your keyboard) and click on the “Startup” tab. You can disable a few startup items at a time, restart your computer and see if that makes a difference. It takes time, but you might be able to narrow it down to a single entry that is causing the problem. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I needed to update my Norton subscription, had trouble seeing if installed correctly, so called Norton. Person I spoke with said I have been hacked by Russian hackers and need to immediately get this corrected with a program that costs $299 per year. Told him I needed to think
about it, he was adamant but I resisted his pressure. My question, do you take on this kind of pc problem? Thanks for your consideration to this matter. Jackie Dear Jackie, I don’t think you have been hacked by Russian hackers, I think you were almost conned by the person you were speaking to on the phone. Where did you get the phone number that you used to call Norton? I’m guessing it was an online search, and you actually called a number belonging to a scammer pretending to be Norton. Technology Helping Those With Dyslexia Dyslexia is a condition in which people have problems processing letters, symbols and words, potentially compromising their ability to read. According to Kids Health, a medical information site powered by Nemours, research has shown dyslexia is a byproduct of how the brain processes information. Those with dyslexia actually use different parts of the brain when they try to read than those without dyslexia, and these parts do not work efficiently. Contrary to popular belief, those with dyslexia do not necessarily see words or letters backwards. One of the more common problems people with dyslexia
experience is struggling to recognize phonemes, or the basic sounds of speech. As a result, putting the sounds of letters together to make words can be tricky for those with dyslexia. With widespread technology usage at home and in schools, assistive devices and apps can help change the game for children and adults with dyslexia. The organization Dyslexic Advantage has found through their Dyslexia at School Study that denial of assistive technology in American schools continues to be a large problem. Of the respondents, 68 percent reported that their students weren’t offered accessible text or technol-

ogy supports for reading. Assistive technology can help those with dyslexia save considerable time and overcome challenges. People with dyslexia who opt to use assistive technology may find that they are able to showcase their intelligence and potential more fully. The following are some tools that can be assets. • Speech recognition software: Users can dictate to a device and have their voices converted into text. Those with spelling or handwriting may find this helps dramatically with written communication. • Text-to-speech software: This is essentially the reverse of speech recognition software. Text is turned into an audible voice that reads the words to the end user. This can help individuals understand written material and check over their work. • Spellcheckers: Some spellcheck programs are designed specifically for dyslexics and look for common errors and automatically replace them. Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.
missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Mary Elizabeth (Staples) Steves, 102 NORTH BERWICK – Mary Elizabeth (Staples) Steves, a lifelong resident of North Berwick, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at the age of 102. She was born in North Berwick on July 6, 1917, the daughter of Clyde and Helen (Nowell) Staples and graduated North Berwick High School. Mary was truly an old fashioned, dignified lady in every sense of the word. She was the matriarch of her family who devoted her life, not only to her family but to helping others; whether it be cooking meals, volunteering or visiting with the sick and elderly. She volunteered at the Waban Country Store and was a very active member of the 1st Baptist Church in North Berwick where she was the pianist for many years. Mary had a great love of music and also played piano at the Bauneg Beg Grange in North Berwick, where she was a member. She was also a member of the Madisses Club. Mary loved her books, puzzles and playing games and was an avid Red Sox fan. Mary adored her family and cherished everyday visits from the five generations. She led a long and healthy life surrounded by her large loving and doting family. Mary was the holder of the Boston Post Cane, held by the eldest citizen of North Berwick. She was pre-deceased by her
siblings, Paul, Ralph and Clyde (Buddy) Staples, Ruth Mathews and Olive Furbish; her husband John (Jack) Steves and her beloved daughter Carole (Steves) Desrochers. “Gamma” as she was lovingly called, will be sorely missed by her son, John Steves and wife Dowie; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great grandchildren with two more eagerly anticipated in the spring. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and cousins. A time of visitation will be held Saturday, November 9, 10-11 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick. Interment to afterwards in Hillside Cemetery, North Berwick. Donations in her memory may be made to D. A. Hurd Library, 41 High Street, North Berwick, ME 03906. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick, where condolences may be expressed at www. johnsonfuneralhomeme.com. • • • • • • • • • •

While investors need to recognize that markets fluctuate, they still need to keep an eye on how their 401(k) investments are performing. Keep an eye out for funds that consistently lose money or provide little to no return, as they’re likely not worthy of your investment dollars. Investors should not overreact and immediately move money around when typically strong funds take a dip, but they also should not accept poorly performing funds as part of the risk of investing.
