Three Tips for Keeping Your Holiday Spirits Bright The annual stress of the holiday season could be even more intense than usual this year. Thanks to COVID-19, families may need to reconsider those Thanksgiving trips to grandmother’s house – or at least social distance around the turkey. Nervous shoppers are wondering whether to do all their gift buying right away lest the supply chain once again run into trouble and stockings end up empty.

Szeniawski Named Citizen of the Year YORK The results are in and after careful consideration it is with great pride that Mary Anne Szeniawski was named York’s Citizen of the Year. In addition to assisting with Table of Plenty, Mary Anne also irons all the alter cloths for St Christopher’s – she used to also clean the church! She bakes and cooks for all first responders throughout the

Deer Collisions Peak in Mid-November! STATEWIDE It is exciting to see a deer or moose in the wild but it can be frightening if they suddenly appear in front of your vehicle on the roadway. Collisions with deer increase in late October, peaking in November - during breeding season. AAA reminds drivers to be on the lookout for an increasing number of deer on roadways across New England in the coming weeks. “AAA urges everyone on the roadways to be extra vigilant, but especially on rural roads” said Pat Moody, manager of

She bakes for senior center events and the Christmas parade and works the Christmas parade every year. In short, the pandemic has the potential to take the usual holiday depression, loneliness and general angst to a whole new level, while also draining away much of the season’s merriment, goodwill and childlike wonder. But it needn’t be that way, says Dr. Allen Lycka (www.drallenlycka.com). Previously acknowledged as one of the leading cosmetic dermatologists globally for three decades – he is now a transformational keynote speak-

The northbound left travel lane on the bridge will remain closed. Crews will open the bridge to three lanes (closer to the outside edge of the bridge) by 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 21. Like all outdoor construction work, this schedule is heavily dependent on weather conditions. Drivers should obey workzone speed limits and be alert and careful while passing project crews. The construction team’s primary focus is the safety of both their crews and the traveling public. For details, visit www. buildingabettergateway.com.

Nationally there are about 1.5 million deer-related car crashes annually that results in over $1 billion dollars in vehicle damage. Deer-related insurance claims average over $4,470.00 in Northern New England. As random as these collisions might seem, there are things you can do to improve your chances of avoiding one. station give away over 1,000 turkeys to those in need over the years. This year the turkey give-away is once again in conjunction with Maine’s Credit Unions and returns to the Great East Butcher Company located at 450 Payne Road in Scarborough. The turkey give-away will begin at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 24 and turkeys will be handed out on a first come, first serve basis until all of the turkeys are gone. There is no cost, no catch, and no strings attached to receive a free turkey for Thanksgiving. Hot Radio Maine does respectfully ask that those in need of help are allowed to go first. The Hot Radio Maine staff will be on site handing out turkeys and all necessary COVID-19 precautions will be in place including mandatory mask wearing. Hot Radio

Maine Program Director and Morning Host, Ryan Deelon announced the give-away on air saying “We’re proud to be able to hold this give-away for the 8th straight year. We know that particularly 2020 has been a tough year for many Mainers and we’re hopeful that a free turkey for Thanksgiving can offer some assistance for their holiday.” Hot Radio Maine has a statewide signal after expanding in January and is heard on 104.7 FM in Portland and southern Maine. Their top-40 format includes core artists like Drake, Ariana Grande, Cardi B, Post Malone, Khalid and more. The station compliments hit driven music with live and local personalities based locally in Maine. Hot Radio Maine has given out thousands of dollars to local Maine listeners as well as other prizes, concerts tickets, and thousands of turkeys during Thanksgiving.

even going to their homes if need be and performs wedding services free of charge. She donates her beautiful handmade quilts and mittens to the needy. As a salaried Town Clerk, she has gone above and beyond to accommodate residents “after hours” assisting panicking brides who need a marriage license, staying late helping someone with a car registration and more. In short, Mary Anne works many, many hours, late into the night or at the crack of dawn, to keep the office running smoothly. In fact, the number of hours she puts in getting the elections organized is staggering! Also, and very important, Mary Anne is the voice of reason who patiently explains town policies to frustrated residents and offer suggestions on how to resolve their dilemmas. For all these reasons and many more, Mary Anne Szeniawski is York’s Citizen of the Year!

It is not what happens to you, it’s what you do with what happens.” Doc Lycka offers a few ways to lessen the pain of what happens to us through positive actionable steps that include: Practice the power of gratitude. With all the negative things that 2020 brought – a pandemic, social unrest, a divisive election – it’s easy to forget the many things you can be thankful for, Lycka says. “Giving thanks for what we have and for the people in our lives, and realizing that this is something that will bring us joy changes your perception,” ...EVENTS from page 4

he says. “It turns from having a ‘me’ focus to a focus on others. We all need to press pause, reflect, and be grateful. Practice this regularly and experience a radical change in your life.” Indulge in self-compassion. Showing compassion for others is wonderful, but it’s also important to show yourself compassion if you feel you failed to meet other people’s holiday expectations, or if world events cause you more worries than you can handle, Lycka says. “Self-compassion is the practice of noticing what you’re feeling and remembering that you’re human and therefore fallible, just like everyone else,” he says. “It’s about treating yourself with the same kindness you would give to a beloved friend. Make an effort to forgive. Holidays are a time when grudges can become magnified. If that’s the case for you, it’s time to put any pain you still feel behind you and consider forgiveness, Lycka says. It won’t just make the holidays better, but your life as well. “When we refuse to forgive and instead indulge in thoughts or acts of revenge, retaliation, and hate, we keep the cycle going and going,” Lycka says. “I once read that forgiveness does not mean you have to break bread with the transgressor. What it does mean for you, in the most positive sense, is when you wish them well you also give yourself peace.” “Finally, this holiday season would be a great time to begin practicing spontaneous acts of kindness,” Lycka says.

“Have you ever noticed how good it feels to say or do something kind for someone else? Performing random, spontaneous

the Marshwood Middle School in Eliot at their annual Veterans Day Celebration and witnessed the care, respect, and genuine dignity that students and staff have fostered for our veterans and first responders. This year however, the traditional setting at the school was out of the question so students in grades six through eight created a comprehensive yet virtual program to thank veterans with a video that’s available to view online. The town of York didn’t let the pandemic stop them from celebrating veterans either, with help from York’s Committee for Veterans’ Affairs, York Parks and Recreation, and others. Street banners were put out to honor those who died in York. The First Parish Church bells toll at 11 a.m. on November 11. A takeout pancake breakfast was held in the parking lot of the Center for Active Living on the day before. Old York Historical Society offered the walking tour, “Answering the Call: York’s Wartime Service”. Students in the York school system worked on veteranthemed projects. And of course, the local American Legion posts included ceremonies on Wednesday as well. The Kittery Community Center usually provides a Thanksgiving dinner to veterans at the beginning of the November, but this year was bound to be different. The staff set up a

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Curator Mary Harding to Retire YORK Twenty-five years ago, Mary Harding, former director of the Old York Historical and Improvement Society, had an idea. Old York Historical Society had moved its headquarters from the George Marshall Store to York Street, leaving the building without a use. Through the years Harding’s vision and dedication to New England artists have become legendary. She created a cultural oasis on Lindsay Road, and brought a great deal of visual joy to York’s residents and

Governor Mills' COVID-19 Update AUGUSTA The Mills Administration announced that, effective Monday, November 16, Massachusetts is no longer exempt from Maine’s quarantine or negative test requirement. People coming here from Massachusetts must either quarantine for 14 days or receive a negative COVID19 test with a sample taken no longer than 72 hours from arrival in Maine. This protocol applies to Maine residents returning from Massachusetts or another of the non-exempt states. The decision comes after the Administration reviewed

recent public health data in Massachusetts and other states. In reviewing metrics, which include but are not limited to positivity rate and 14-day case rate, Massachusetts demonstrated an alarming increase in prevalence of the virus with a

vices (DHHS) Standing Order, any person in Maine who feels they need a test, with or without symptoms, can get a test at participating sites without an order from a health care provider. These sites include 27 “swab and send” locations that offer testing to the public at no charge under agreements with DHHS.

home-cooking fires. NFPA offers these tips: Never leave the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop; When cooking in the oven, stay home to check it regularly; Set a timer on your stove or phone to keep track of cooking times; Keep things that can catch fire like oven mitts, wooden utensils, food wrappers, and towels away from the cooking area; Avoid long sleeves and hanging fabrics that could come in contact with a heat source; Always cook with a lid beside you to cover a pan fire, and never use water or a fire extinguisher on a grease fire; For an oven fire, keep the oven door closed until it goes out; Keep children at least three feet away from areas where hot food or drink is being prepared or served to prevent burns; NFPA strongly discourages the use of turkey fryers, suggesting to buy a deep-fried turkey instead; If you have any doubts or concerns, contact the fire department for assistance.

Troops First Announces Major Suicide Prevention Effort NATIONWIDE The Troops First Foundation recently announced a national push to create greater connection among military personnel in an effort to stem a troubling rise in suicides. By asking service members and veterans to reach out and connect with former comrades the message from Troops First is clear – make a call, take a call – it could help save a life. Research shows that active duty service members and vets in need of support often don’t seek help on their own. The Foundation’s effort, known as “Warrior Call,” is calling on those who are wearing or who have worn the uniform to share a sense of responsibility for those with whom they have served. The Foundation’s goal is to have at least 50,000 current service members and vets make a phone call and connect with another by the end of the year. “Our message to current service members and vets is simple: Connect with your battle buddies. Be honest with them. Let them know that you care about their wellbeing,” said Frank Larkin, co-chair of Warrior Call, who has experienced firsthand the indescribable loss and anguish of losing a service member son to suicide. Worsening trends in suicides is driving the action by Troops First and a host of partners. The suicide rate among active-duty troops is on the rise, according to the Pentagon’s latest figures. In 2019, the rate of suicide among active-duty troops was 25.9 per 100,000 troops. That represents an increase from 2018, when the rate was 24.9 per 100,000 and 21.9 per 100,000 in 2017. The rates have been since 2014. At the same time, the Army has seen a 30 percent increase in 2020 in deaths by suicide, from 88 deaths by suicide in 2019 to 114 this year, the Associated Press has reported. The story among veterans is similarly troubling. The suicide rate among vets is now approximately double the rate of the general population. Another reason for the big national push now by Troops First is the impact of the pandemic and its height-

ened stressors. The Army’s leadership issued a statement recently underscoring concerns about the impact of COVID19 on the mental health of soldiers. “At this time of additional stress, we want to make certain that the nation’s warriors, whether retired or active duty, connect and check in with one another. All it takes is a simple call,” said Leroy Petry, a 2011 recipient of the Medal of Honor and co-chair of Warrior Call. Service members and veterans are encouraged to go to www.warriorcall.org for more information on how they can participate and for resources on suicide prevention. Founded in 2008, the Troops First Foundation implements initiatives that foster connectivity, build trust and address reintegration in post-9/11 warrior care.

Dear Computer Lady, Since you switched to Emsisoft, do you still use Malwarebytes? I would like to get rid of both AVG and Malwarebytes. Thank you in advance, Tom Dear Tom, I do not personally have Malwarebytes installed on my computer any longer, so I guess Emsisoft has replaced both AVG and Malwarebytes. The computer I am currently using is about four years old. When I set it up, I installed

Dear Election Worker,

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Emsisoft as my antivirus. In the past, I would install Malwarebytes when I felt that I needed to run a malware scan. I am very happy with Emsisoft! Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, My question: technology is changing so fast – most new

computers do not have a CD drive – I was putting all my pictures on CDs so what would you recommend to store your pictures? I was thinking about a jump drive. Hopefully you can be of help. Thanks and have a great day, Barb Dear Barb, For archiving files like pictures, optical media like CDs and DVDs are far better than a jump drive. This is because the files are burned onto the disk, and unless you scratch it or melt it, your data is not going to become corrupted. With a magnetic media like a jump drive, your pictures can become corrupted much more easily because things like a static charge can damage them. You do have some options though. You can always purchase an external DVD drive to go with your new computer. It will attach by USB and you can

use it to access your photos, and burn additional photos to disks. You can store them on an external hard drive. This is a bit more secure than a jump drive, and certainly easier to use since you don’t have to break your photo library down into disk sized chunks. You can store your photos on a cloud based service. Some examples are a backup service like Carbonite, or even OneDrive, which is Microsoft’s cloud. If you are paying for Microsoft Office 365, your subscription includes up to 5TB of cloud storage, which should be more than enough for your photos. You can store them on a small server or network attached storage device in your home. The advantage is that you would be able to access your photos and videos from any computer, smart TV, tablet, or phone that can access your network. Whatever you choose to do, the best backup plan should have your files stored in three locations, on your computer, on a local backup, and in an off site backup. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Is there a way to clean out a tablet? Must it be thrown out? Thanks, Cindy Dear Cindy, Every tablet that I have worked on has a way to reset it back to factory defaults built into the tablet. Since it is a little different for each tablet brand, you would have to look it up for your specific tablet. Once you reset your tablet, it will no longer have your personal information on it, and you can safely sell it or give it away. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have enjoyed your letters for a long time and now I have a question. How can I get rid of this popup: “remove the ad on

the right and get an expanded view of your inbox by making att.net your default search engine”. It keeps popping up and I can’t get rid of it. I finally made att.net my default search engine but it didn’t stop popping up when I make the window bigger and the ads disappear. Help! Doris Dear Doris, While I don’t have an att. net email account to test with, my guess is that you are using the webmail interface and the ads are part of the att.net web page. They want you to use them as your default search engine because they make money when you click on their ads. There is probably not much you can do to get rid of the ads, but I do have a couple of suggestions for you. 1. You can install a pop-up blocker on your computer. I don’t use one, so I can’t tell you a good one, but most web browsers have built in settings for disabling pop-up windows so check the settings in the web browser you are using. 2. Get a good tune-up. Malware is a common cause of popups (although probably not the specific pop-up you are describing) so be sure to get your computer cleaned out and updated once a year. A thorough tune-up has more steps than I can give here, and is probably not for the average user, so take it in to your local computer shop once a year for a good cleaning out. 3. Use an email program like Thunderbird. If you set up an email program, you won’t have to visit the att.net website to get your email and you won’t see the ads on their site. COVID-19 Clinical Study Scams Promise Big Bucks According to the Better Business Bureau, scammers are sending out text messages promoting participation in phony clinical studies. Don’t be tempted by the opportunity to help scientists while making extra cash. Make sure it’s the real thing before you sign up. How the Scam Works You receive an unsolicited message via text, email, or a social media message. It explains that you may qualify for a COVID-19 study, which pays upwards of $1,000. One version received by BBB staff read: “Local Covid19 Study: Compensation up to $1,220! Qualify Here: [link removed] stop2stop.” The phony message includes a link to see whether or not you qualify for the study. If you click it, you could unknowingly download malware onto your computer or phone. This virus can give scammers access to your usernames, passwords, and other personal information stored on your computer.

In other cases, the link may take you to a website that looks like a real clinical trial. You will be asked for personal information, such as government ID or bank account numbers. Real medical researchers would never ask for this information during the screening process! How to Avoid Trial Scams Look up the domain. Use

lookup.icann.org to look up the URL. Look for warning signs such as a very recent registration date or registration in a foreign country. Think the trial is real? Find it on the official website. If you receive a message about a study and want to confirm whether it’s true, go directly to (or do a web search for) the organization’s website for further information.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Library of Medicine (NLM) also maintain ClinicalTrials.gov, a free searchable database of clinical studies on a wide range of diseases. If there is no government agency, university, or hospital mentioned, it’s likely a scam. Never pay to be part of a clinical trial. Real clinical trials will never ask you to pay them.

$2M for Lobster Industry Research WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, announced that the Sea Grant American Lobster Initiative has been awarded $2 million to support Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank American lobster research priorities. This is the second consecutive year that $2 million has been awarded for lobster research. The funded research will address critical gaps in knowl-

edge about how American lobster is being impacted by environmental change in the Gulf of Maine. Four of the nine research projects being funded will be conducted by Maine researchers and institutions, and include: Fishing in hot water – defining sentinel indicators of resilience in the American lobster fishery, University of Maine Orono. The intent of this research is to detect early signs of vulnerability among harvesters. In pursuit of this research, the authors will work closely with the lobster industry, managers, and the Lobster Regional Extension Program to solicit input and

The purpose of this project is to develop a modeling framework to assess and forecast spatio-temporal dynamics of lobster in a changing ecosystem. Legitimate clinical trials do gather information about candidates – but not financial information. The department began conducting female lobster maturity studies via ovarian staging, widely recognized as the most accurate maturity assessment methodology, although time and resource-intensive, in 2018. The goal of the work proposed here is to leverage DMR’s efforts in order to evaluate and develop two promising non-invasive assessment methodologies and generate publicly accessible instructional materials that would allow for datasets to be easily updated in the future. Understanding and improving spatial distribution projections for lobster: Considering predation and building expert consensus-Gulf of Maine Research Institute. In this project, the authors aim to address the limitations of lobster distribution models and strengthen stakeholders’ trust in our ability to accurately quantify, project, explain, and apply lobster distribution and abundance models under future climate conditions. In sum, this research will provide information necessary to support forward-looking conservation and management strategies for the lobster fishery, ultimately enhancing the resilience and adaptation capacity of coastal communities that rely on lobster to support their livelihoods and maintain their cultural identity.

Education from Lowell State College and she continued her life long passion for learning by earning her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Lowell. Prior to her retirement, Catherine was employed for 37 years as a teacher for the Lowell Public Schools. Catherine taught many different grades and subjects. During her decades long career she had the opportunity to influence many young minds. She loved teaching and would often remark how satisfying it was to see a child’s eyes light up when they mastered a new skill. Catherine loved traveling. She enjoyed researching the locations she wanted to visit and would often seek out unique places that were off the beaten path. When she retired, she moved to the Maine seacoast. She enjoyed the warm summer days and calm ocean while walking on the sand; always with Richard close by her side. She also enjoyed taking a ride after a Nor’ Easter to marvel at the ocean’s fury. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her husband Richard in the company of her

Her family had exceptional respect for “Mimi” and would often seek her comfort and sage advice. We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

phen Powers. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Catherine’s Life Celebration at the McKenna-Ouellette Funeral Home, 327 Hildreth Street, Lowell, MA, on Thursday, November 19, 4-7 p.m. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, November 20, at 10 a.m. at St. Michael Church, 543 Bridge St., Lowell, MA. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Tewksbury, MA. Due to COVID-19, face masks and social distancing are required at all services. There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased.

We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists.

LAWN CARE

...DEER from page 1 AAA has some tips to help prevent a crash or to reduce damage from an animal collision: Scan the road and shoulders ahead of you: Looking ahead helps provide enough reaction time if an animal is spotted. Also, remember deer often move in groups, so when there is one, there are likely more in the area. Good visibility is a must: Use high-beam headlights if there’s no oncoming traffic. Wildlife may be spotted sooner when using high beams. This will give the driver time to recognize and react to the situation. Slow down, and watch for other deer. Deer rarely travel alone, so if you see one, there are likely to be more nearby. What if a crash is unavoidable? If a collision is unavoidable, remain in your lane- swerving to

avoid an animal can often cause a more serious crash or result in drivers losing control of vehicles. From dusk to dawn: Be extra cautious at dawn and dusk. Most animals, especially deer, tend to be more active early in the morning and at dusk. Drive distraction and impairment free: Wear your seat belt and remain alert and sober. Driver distraction and inattention, combined with excess speed, often result in vehicle-wildlife collisions. Pay attention to warning signs.
