South Berwick Village Welcomes Revelers to “Believe”

“Believe” is the word as the Home for the Holidays celebration takes on a Polar Express theme on Friday, November 30, 5-8 p.m. in South Berwick Village.

SOUTH BERWICK Bells, treats, history, and a new North Pole trolley will welcome residents and visitors to Home for the Holidays on Friday, November 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. The annual holiday evening stroll through village businesses, shops and restaurants coincides with the SoBo Arts Sale at South Berwick Town Hall. “This year we invite the imagination,” said event organizer Deb DeColfmacker of

Edward Jones, whose committee has added a trolley ride and readings of the book “The Polar Express” to the celebration. “Wearing pajamas is permitted,” she added with a laugh. A punch ticket will invite everyone to visit all businesses in the village. Children completing the route will be given a bell at the end of the evening. “Residents and visitors alike love our downtown. Home for the Holidays is our way to encourage everyone to shop local

first during the holidays.” Cookie decorating, warm drinks, dreidel games, are among the attractions, as well as a visit from Santa Claus. Many businesses will offer SoBo Bucks, coupons that entitle shoppers to a discount at that local independent store. The SoBo Art Sale continues 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 1. “We hope revelers will See HOLIDAYS page 22...

body conditioning it entailed, he started to see his interests go from baseball to bodybuilding. In fact, when he was 18, he and a friend were walking on the beach one day and he asked his friend “What do you want to do with your life?” and his friend said, “Play baseball” then his friend asked him, “What do you want to do?” and Daryl said “I want to compete in the Mr Universe contest!” A lofty goal for an 18-year old but he was determined to make his dream come true! He was able to get all the training in nutrition, physical education, sleep management and body conditioning for sports at East Tennessee State University where he graduated with a Masters degree. He also learned what it takes to succeed in helping a person achieve their overall well being. His first big chance came when an internship opened up for a strength and conditioning coach at the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, Colorado for the 1994 Lillehammer Olympic Winter Games and the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Summer Games. He applied for the internship and was chosen over 5000 other applicants! He had the privilege to help boxers, speed skaters and cross country athletes with their strength and conditioning training. He enjoyed it very much, and said,

“These were the two best years of my life.” What also come out of that experience is his own brainchild invention called 3D

WELLS For Veterans Day 2019, Wells Junior High School students created a unique display of photos with brief descriptions of veterans related to them and school staff. According to WJHS Assistant Principal Doug Perley, this effort began modestly with a few exhibits but soon spread quickly filling a major section of a hallway wall and then some. What came to be referred to as “the Wall” is located close to the school’s main office. The display was planned and assembled as a classroom community initiative and consists of over 200 individual exhibits highlighting veterans primarily from the World II era up to the present time including some former students of WJHS. The display consists of engaging photos, both black and white and color, of fathers, sisters, grandfathers, and other relationships. “Every photo is of a person

WJHS staff member Deb Sheppard displayed a photo and brief description of her father-inlaw, Master Sargent James A. Sheppard who was part of the famed Tuskegee Airmen serving in the US Army Air Corps (now the Air Force) during World War II. The community groups at WJHS meet once a week and are composed of students grouped primarily by classroom. ...CONANT from page 1 was told if you want to be good in sports you have to keep away from smoking, drinking and anything else that’s a detriment to your overall body health. Even as a kid he took all that very seriously and it followed him into adulthood. Finally and fortunately his biggest dream to compete in the Mr. Universe Contest on his terms came to fruition when the Amateur Atlantic Union took over the Mr. Universe contest and they advertised it as a “drug free” competition. His patience had paid off and here was his chance to compete under much better and healthier circumstances without having to compromise his integrity. Owning his own fitness facility didn’t hurt either, so even though he had kept himself in great shape all these years he still had to train for 12 weeks before competing. All of it paid off big time, his dream came true! He competed and won third place in the 2019 Mr. Universe contest in Las Vegas! Not only that, but his trophy actually has “DRUG FREE” engraved right on it! He’s proud of his new title and passionate about his work that was partially inspired by Vince Gironda a very famous bodybuilder also known as the “Iron Guru” who helped create

the fitness boom that exists today. Conant’s philosophy mirrors Gironda’s when it comes to proper nutrition, physical exercise, and body conditioning but Conant goes many steps beyond because of the 3D Neuromuscular Proprioceptive functional training (mentioned before) that brings his expertise to another level as far as being able to help train people in deeper more specific ways. He also believes in holistic healing so that with his knowledge and innovative training, one can actually be free of pain killers and medicines that have been a crutch for many people for a long time. For instance, exercise and proper nutrition can help lower blood pressure, help one lose weight the proper way, help seniors with bone building programs thus reducing the ageing process and bring on longevity. He has written books on nutrition and bodybuilding. “Diet Earth” is about nutrition and one of his bodybuilding books is called “Buff Daddy, Family Man Bodybuilding.” His credentials are much too extensive to list but he’s the real deal and possesses a never give up attitude that keeps him and others going with his mind body connection expertise! Dreams do come true with hard work and determination and lots of patience which he had and it paid off!

Everyone Has a Table of Life

By Jim Fabiano Nothing stays the same. Everything changes. I have been known to make that statement to many of my students when they are depressed about something that is happening in their young lives. I have also been known to tell this to my daughter when she thinks that her life has hit a snag that seems to have the capacity

to never go away. Every now and then she tells me that she is sick of hearing it but I know that she knows what I am trying to say. The holidays, especially Thanksgiving has the tendency to prove this point. In fact, the point becomes a part of many of our lives. Last year one of my nephews made a very interesting observation, as we as a family,

were enjoying the holiday festivities. He noticed that the generations of our family seem to be in a kind of shift. Those who used to have the position of the young teenagers with few cares in our world now were becoming the heads of young families with different kinds of dreams and aspirations toward their futures. My memory of some of the first Thanksgiving holidays had all of my aunts, uncles, cousins

and grandparents come over to our house for what we all called “turkey day”. The women used to come over early in the morning to help my mother and my sisters with the cooking and getting the large dining room table ready for the feast that was sure to come. But, the dining room table was not the only one readied. There was also an old card table my parents stored in the basement only to be taken out during this time of year and set up in the kitchen so that it could be viewed and controlled by the people who would sit at the larger table in the dining room. This table was for the children of the family who were not

quite old enough to sit at the main table. We were given the same food and when I, and the rest of my family, was young we used to enjoy this separation because we could have our own conversation and an ample supply of soda and dessert. The older we got the more we started to dislike our allocation to the “children’s table.” We were relegated to this part of the festivities until we started our teenaged years. Sometimes we had to stay for a longer period of time because there was not enough room for us to join our more adult family at the main table. But, soon the day arrived when we were asked to join the adults because we were old enough to be responsible and enjoy the grown-ups with their grown-up conversation. This was both a sad and happy time for me because it was a sign that I was growing up and it was also a sign that I could not eat as much dessert as I wanted. My first year at the main table I noticed that the children’s table did not have a vacant seat that I created when I was allowed to join the main table. A newer and younger member of my family took it up. It seems that some aunt and uncle started to bring their new baby to the festivities because it was simply See TABLE page 7...

~ News ~ ...TABLE from page 6 their time to come. Years past and more of my cousins and nephews started to join the main table with new arrivals filling our spots. Another thing I noticed was that the older people of my family started to vacate their spots at the table. In the beginning it was said that they were just a bit too old or sick to join us on that particular Thanksgiving. Soon after it was said that they passed away to a place that was called better. I always felt sadness because I would miss their stories about the life they led. I also thought that they should always belong on their allotted spot at the Thanksgiving table. More years past and I noticed that more people started to leave the festivities that always seemed to be at my childhood home. They did not leave because of a sickness or death, they left because they found a wife or a husband and decided to have their own Thanksgiving banquet at their new home or at the home of their new families. I also noticed that the small card table in the kitchen soon disappeared because the new people of their families started to join their new families instead of joining mine. In the scheme of reality I soon left with my new wife and

joined her family for the Thanksgiving Holiday. It seems that the men of the family were the first to leave because they usually joined their new wives with their families. The women of the family stayed and brought someone new into their family. I don’t know why this is the case but like the inevitability of winter in New England, it simply is. My new family had similar traditions like the family I just left. There was a large table set up for the older members and a smaller table in the kitchen for the children. The children’s table was always full and because I had taken up another seat at the large table a young teenager was returned to join his younger siblings. I don’t think he ever forgave me for this. Time passed and I observed the evolution of the years that took place at the holiday table. Where for years the older grandparents sat and were listened to with interest and admiration because of their years they simply started to disappear with new family members taking their place. The children also evolved and took the place of people who left for other families or took the chairs of family members who rose in stature because of their age. This year I find myself sitting very near the head of the See LIFE page 11...

The Camden Conference presents Peter Imber at the Library on Monday, December 2 at 6 p.m. Fifty years ago, at the height of his popularity, Walter Cronkite and the CBS Evening News averaged nearly 30 million viewers a night. Today, the three major network television evening news broadcasts have a combined audience every night that is half of that. How this happened will be the focus of Imber’s discussion, which will examine the history of TV news, the impact of technology, the influence of corporate control of the networks, the rise of cable news and the growth of social media as a news source. Peter Imber worked in the ABC News Los Angeles Bureau for 26 years as a producer for ABC News’ broadcasts, including World News Tonight with Peter Jennings and Nightline with Ted Koppel. ing events. The first is a talk and exhibit on Friday, November 22; the second is on Friday, December 13. Both are at 7 p.m. at York Public Library, 15 Long Sands Road, York. Hydrocarbons are the basis for fossil fuels -- primarily wood, petroleum, natural gas and coal. When these fuels are burned, as for energy and heat, they combine with oxygen and release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. As always, James Kences offers a great tale and fresh approach to complex issues. He is an avid reader and investigator, absorbed by questions related to scientific invention, the history of various technologies, and the forces behind global-

ization – developments propelled by the human passion for change and speed. In his quest to understand how fossil fuels became the engine of our civilization, he developed a chronology and a compelling narrative that describe the origins and growth of the “Hydrocarbon Age,” which began with coal mining in England in the middle 1500s. The use of coal for heat led to the development of the steam engine, a pivotal invention that ushered in the Industrial Revolution and the great shift from agricultural communities to manufacturing and city life. ...LIFE from page 7 table. My older brother-in-laws and wives now hold the right to be where they have people listening to their stories and fables about the life they had lived through. The children’s table is filled with young boys and girls who came from people’s children whom I grew up with and who accepted me into their family. I look to my right and left and see these same people sitting precariously close to the head of the table. I guess I am now close to having my seat evolve to the end of both the Thanksgiving Table and in reality to my own life’s position. I will soon be the focal point with my stories of how I survived to become as old as I am. I can’t say I am looking forward to that time but I can say that I am thankful that I have stories to tell and family members who want to hear them. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I just got an email from UPS stating that I was not available when they attempted to deliver a package, and a second attempt will be made to deliver the package on the next business day. That’s nice, but I never ordered anything. There is a tracking number and a shipment detail link that I can click on, but I am a little nervous to click and see what is being shipped. Do you think this is a scam? Nancy Dear Nancy, I am 99.9% sure that it is a scam. Please don’t click on anything in that email! It is probably malware of some sort. In fact, it could be a very malicious piece of malware that encrypts all your files (locks them up so you can’t access them) and then demands a ransom of $300 or more to unlock them for you. My advice to you, or anyone reading this is to never click on a link or open an attachment in an email that you are not expecting. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I see several questions on Picasa. ~ News ~ Governor Mills Issues Executive Order to Fight Elder Abuse AUGUSTA Joined by lawmakers, advocates for older Mainers, and other state government officials, Governor Janet Mills signed an Executive Order establishing the Elder Justice Coordinating Partnership to combat elder abuse in Maine. The Partnership – comprised of government officials from the Departments of Health and Human Services, Public Safety, and Professional and Financial Regulation as well as members of statewide aging and other advocacy organizations – aims to break down silos to coordinate a multi-agency and multisector response to elder abuse with the goals of: 1) identifying challenges to the prevention of, detection of, and response to elder abuse; 2) developing strategic priorities across the public and private sectors to prevent and respond to elder abuse; and 3) making recommendations regarding direct services, education, public policy, and data collection and evaluation, including legislative changes, if any. The Partnership will submit these recommendations in the form of an “Elder Justice Roadmap” to the Governor no later than December 8, 2021.

“The abuse of vulnerable people, especially our older citizens, is an insidious crime and has no place in Maine,” said Governor Janet Mills. “Maine is an aging state, and it is crucial that we harness the collective power of state government and private organizations to develop a roadmap to protect them from abuse, neglect, and all forms of exploitation. I look forward to appointing members to the Elder Justice Coordinating Partnership and reviewing the Elder Justice Roadmap so that we can take action to protect older Mainers.” The Partnership was requested by Legal Services for the Elderly, the Elder Abuse Institute of Maine, the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, the Maine Association of Area Agencies on Aging, the Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence. It comes at the request comes at a time when the U.S. Department of Justice estimates that one in nine people over the age of 60 will be abused or exploited every year, including an estimated 33,000 victims in Maine alone. Recent Retiree Pays it Forward with Published Books

OGUNQUIT Christian McCarthy is a recent retiree from the life insurance industry but while the idea of more free time to volunteer and enjoy life appealed to him, he chose to rekindle his dream of becoming a writer. Chris studied history and political science in college and wanted to use research material to write books that connected to his broad knowledge and interests on a variety of subjects. He also wanted it to be a hobby and not a moneymaking

proposition, so he came up with the idea of donating the royalties from every book to a theme charity based on each book’s story. His first book, “The Golden Child”, took three years to write. The story details a family’s struggle with their adopted daughter’s mental health and a riveting tale of deceit, malpractice and the heartbreaking choices families face. To help sell this book, Christian’s publisher suggested a healthy mix of marketing ideas to get the book in front of as

many people as possible. From pop-up ads and publicity mailers to visiting local libraries and independent bookstores, Christian and his wife traveled throughout New England to get his book onto shelves. It was a great experience and Christian donated the money he earned from the book to the Maine Society for Autism, since the story had a mental health theme. The agency was thrilled, and the experience inspired him to write a second book. With a strong interest in history and WWII, Christian decided that his next book would have a historical fiction theme. He did a lot of research, and wove a compelling story that combined elements on the end of the war, a Nazi hunter storyline, an energy crisis, and the threat of nuclear war and as this story had a military backdrop, he also decided to donate the royalties to a veteran’s charity. At this same time, Christian’s good friend and neighbor had a nephew who was killed in the war on terror. This soldier was highly decorated, served in the military for many years and

even has a street within Arlington National Cemetery named after him! It was because of this and the fact that the soldier left behind a wife and five small children, Christian chose to have all the royalties of his second book, “The Descendant”, go to The Brothers In Arms Foundation. Currently, Christian is writing his third book which will be a mystery novel that takes place in Boston. Like the two before it, this book too will have an overriding theme with all the proceeds donated to a worthy theme charity. Interested readers can find Christian’s books, The Golden

SOUTH BERWICK Central School guest artist Lorenda James was welcomed into Central’s Art Studio to teach Mrs. McDonnell’s 3rd-graders how to make tempera paint. The students were extremely engaged and proud of their efforts. James brought in colorful leaves for all to inspect. She explained that the rich colored pigments she brought were made from natural items found in nature. Students crushed charcoal to make fine dust and other natural pigments were used. The students took turns cracking and straining the eggs, carefully making sure only the yolk went into the beaker and mixed specific amounts of egg yolks, distilled water, linseed oil, and lavender oil.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ OPA Celebrates Holiday Season with Screening of The Nutcracker OGUNQUIT -

Mikhail Baryshnikov’s breathtaking production of The Nutcracker, will be shown on Sunday December 1 at 2 p.m. at the Dunaway Center, 23 School Street, in Ogunquit. Admission, parking and holiday treats are free! The Nutcracker is Mikhail Baryshnikov’s beautiful and critically acclaimed, Emmynominated 1977 production. This spectacular performance is danced by the magnificent team of Baryshnikov, one of the greatest classical dancers of the century, and Gelsey Kirkland, both showcased at the peak of their careers, with members of the American Ballet Theatre. The Nutcracker is the magical and lighthearted story of a small girl’s dream on Christmas Eve. Baryshnikov is the toy Nutcracker-turned-Prince in this exhilarating production that marked his initial and universally acclaimed choreographic effort. Gelsey Kirkland is little Clara, the dreamer, and Alexander Minz is Drosselmeyer, the wizard who conjures up the dream and eventually dispels it. Extravagant sets and costumes bring the beauty of this winter wonderland to life. The magical aspects will delight children, while the spectacular sets and performances will enchant and delight the child in all of us. Celebrated by critics and public alike, Baryshikov’s The Nutcracker delivers a brilliant

and sparkling adaptation of the famous E.T.A. Hoffmann tale along with Tchaikovsky’s classic score – and showcases the athleticism and precision of Baryshnikov’s solo variations. His brilliance, coupled with the lovely dancing of Kirkland, made this Nutcracker a holiday perennial on network and public television. The film is shown on a full wall-size screen; admission, parking, and holiday treats are free. For more information, visit www. ogunquitperformingarts.org.

~ Pets ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Safe Haven volunteers agree: the very best thing about being part of our team is meeting the kitties that come in – usually from very dire circumstances. We thrill at spoiling them, and celebrate when they get a wonderful home. Every single kitty tugs at our heart strings. Pumpkin, shown here, won our hearts the moment we met her. At age 19, she was scheduled to be euthanized by her owners,

even though she was in very good health. We welcomed her with open arms and helped her forget what almost happened. Pumpkin had spent most of her time outdoors, lying in the grass. She had never been to the vet or received medical care. At first she was sullen and would swipe occasionally. It’s hard to have your entire life changed and be surrounded by strangers in a strange place. Over the months, Pumpkin has come to know and trust

us and enjoys the softer side of life with toys, soft blankets and yummy treats. She’s definitely happier and more relaxed knowing she’s safe and loved. She enjoys being pet and talked to and will even sit in your lap if so inclined. She loves canned food and fresh water, and despite her age requires no medication. Because of Pumpkin’s age, we are looking for someone to foster her forever. Safe Haven will pay the medical expenses at our vet if needed, or you may adopt her and we will help with

those expenses at your vet. We do not want concern about possible expensive medical care in the future to prevent this darling girl from finding a wonderful home. For details, call Joyce at 207-229-8314 or Leonore at 207-985-3227. See HAVEN page 20...

Our volunteers are working very hard and the kitties are doing fine. In the meantime, we desperately need canned cat food, clumping litter, Chewy gift cards, and gas cards. We also need supplies for our foster program, including new litter boxes, pooper scoopers, new soft fleece blankets, cat toys and laser toys. Our Thrift Shop is open seven days a week, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Thursday and 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Friday - Sunday. The American Red Cross offers a variety of helpful tips to

Health & Fitness Healthcare Providers Nationwide are Gearing Up for Flu Season As the Centers for Disease Control and Infections urges the public to heed the dangers of the flu, US MedEquip reports that healthcare providers across the U.S. are renting medical equipment at a record rate to treat the influx of

US Med-Equip, which partners with top hospitals across the nation to provide the highest quality movable medical equipment for patients in their care, already has seen a spike in orders for respiratory ventilators. “Flu season and the rush of patients it brings can significantly strain hospital resources. Our

healthcare partners are geared up to provide the best care possible with ready access to the medical equipment they need to help patients heal,” US MedEquip CEO Gurmit Singh Bhatia said. US Med-Equip recently invested more than $50 million in thousands of new ventilators and supportive movable medical equipment to help healthcare providers brace for the flu outbreak. Health & Fitness Surviving the Holidays is Difficult for Alienated Grandparents WELLS For grandparents who once had a loving grandparentgrandchild relationship or those who never were allowed to meet or hold a grandchild, the holidays can be an especially difficult time. Grandparent Alienation is a global epidemic with no socio-economic or religious boundaries. It is considered by leading international experts in the field of Alienation to be both a severe form of child abuse and

a severe form of elder abuse that can have devastating effects on families. Surviving the holiday season has become a particularly challenging time for grandparents who wonder how they are going to survive yet another year without their sons, daughters, and grandchildren. Instead of a time filled with family and traditions, this time of year can be particularly lonely and filled with anxiety and dread. Studies show the best form

of help for those who suffer from complicated grief (grief without closure) is to attend a peer-led support group. AGA, Alienated Grandparents Anonymous, has monthly support group meetings in southern Maine with the next one taking place on Tuesday, December 10 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Wells Public Library, 1434 Post Road (Rte 1) in Wells. The focus will be on coping with the holidays. Interested parties can email local AGA coordinators at AGAYorkCo@gmail.com. NFPA Cites Thanksgiving at Leading Day for Home Fires NATIONWIDE More than three times as many home cooking fires occur on Thanksgiving Day as on a typical day of the year. That’s according to the latest U.S. Home Cooking Fires report recently released by the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA), which shows that there were 1,600 reported home cooking fires on Thanksgiving in 2017, reflecting a 238% increase over the daily average. Unattended cooking was the leading cause of these fires. “With people preparing multiple dishes, often with lots of guests and other distractions in and around the kitchen, it’s easy to see why the number of home cooking fires increases so dramatically,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “Fortunately, the vast majority of cooking fires are highly preventable with a little added awareness, and by taking simple steps to minimize those risks.” According to the NFPA report, cooking is the leading cause of home fires year-

round, accounting for almost half of all US home fires (49%) and reported home fire injuries (45%). Cooking is the secondleading cause of home fire deaths, accounting for 22% of all fire deaths. The report also shows that less progress has been made in reducing deaths from home cooking fires than deaths from most other fire causes. There were more cooking fire deaths in 2013--2017 than in 1980–1984, despite total home fire deaths falling by 46% over the period. The NFPA recommends the following tips for cooking safely this Thanksgiving: Never leave the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop. Some types of cooking, especially those that involve frying or sautéing with oil, need continuous attention. When cooking a turkey, stay in your home and check on it regularly. Make use of timers to keep track of cooking times, particularly for foods that require longer cook times. Keep things that can catch fire like oven mitts, wooden utensils, food wrappers, and towels at least three feet away

from the cooking area. Avoid long sleeves and hanging fabrics that could come in contact with a heat source. Always cook with a lid beside your pan. If you have a fire, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Do not remove the cover because the fire could start again. Let the pan cool for a long time. Never throw water or use a fire extinguisher on the fire. For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. Only open the door once you’re confident the fire is completely out, standing to the side as you do. If you have any doubts or concerns, contact the fire department for assistance. Keep children at least three feet away from the stove. Kids should also stay away from hot foods and liquids, as steam or splash from these items could cause severe burns. In addition, NFPA strongly discourages the use of turkey fryers, as these can lead to severe burns, injuries, and property damage. For a safe alternative, NFPA recommends grocery stores, food retailers, and restaurants that sell deepfried turkey. For more information, visit www.nfpa.org. Avoid Popular Scam Tactics in the Weeks Ahead With Black Friday and Cyber Monday right around the corner, shoppers should be on high alert to ensure they’re not the latest victim of a shiny and new scam being cooked up by bad actors. According to the Federal Trade Commission, $1.48B was reported lost last year due to fraud, an increase of 38% since the previous year. While all of us enjoy finding a good deal, without paying close attention when clicking around online, it’s easy to find yourself out thousands of dollars or with low-quality, counterfeit shoes and bags that no one would want. To avoid that being your reality this holiday shopping season, fraud prevention company RedMarlin has researched and compiled the top 5 Black Friday and Cyber Monday scams consumers should look out for this year. Gaming Scams: Gaming scams have drastically increased the last few years, with the most popular being the ‘Fortnite V-Bucks Generator’ scam. Fortnite allows players to buy custom skins

and weapons through its ingame currency, ‘V-Bucks,’ but scammers are using it as bait. They claim to hack into Fortnite’s servers and increase the number of your V-Bucks, solely by completing a survey and entering your credit card information. Easy enough, right? Cryptocurrency Discount Scams: Scammers have found a new way to attract crypto traders and enthusiasts by offering huge discounts and cashback offers. It starts with an email claiming to offer steep discounts on bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies. Once the user

lands the webpage, he/she will receive a promo code. They will be redirected to a page with several purchase options where the user needs to opt for a method of payment and enter their banking details. Gift Card Scams: Consumers should be particularly wary on social media channels like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp for offers like ‘Pay $10 to receive $100 in gift cards.’ If you’re buying a gift card, make sure you’re purchasing directly from the correct seller. Or, better yet, pop into a Target or CVS to avoid the digital

threat altogether! Survey Scams If you find yourself entering a landing web page with a pop up telling you that you’ve been chosen to participate in an anonymous survey, your best bet is to put your guard up. Scammers will replicate the language used on a true retailer’s page asking for your “valuable feedback for a chance to win...” Instead of going for the “$80 exclusive reward,” check the URL and make sure you’re really on an authentic website, not a Walmart look-alike, like ‘walmarty.com. New Online Reporting for Imposter Scam Calls NATIONWIDE Andrew Saul, Commissioner of Social Security, and Gail S. lead victims into making cash or gift card payments to avoid arrest for purported Social Security number problems—skyrocketed over the past year to become the #1 type of fraud reported to the Federal Trade Commission and the Social Security Administration. To combat these scams, Social Security and the OIG will use the new online form to capture data that will be analyzed for trends and commonalities. The OIG will use the data to identify investigative leads, which could help identify criminal entities or individuals participating in or facilitating the scams. Ultimately, these efforts are expected to disrupt the scammers, help reduce this type of fraud, and reduce the number of victims. “We are taking action to raise awareness and prevent scammers from harming Americans,” Commissioner Saul said. “I am deeply troubled that our country has not been able to stop these crooks from deceiving some of the most vulnerable members of our society.” Commissioner Saul and Inspector General Ennis encourage the public to use the new online form to report Social Security

phone scams including robocalls and live callers, as well as email, text, and in-person scams. The form allows people to create a unique Personal Identification Number (PIN), so if OIG contacts a person about their report, they will know the call is legitimate. “Awareness is our best hope to thwart the scammers,” said Inspector General Ennis. “Tell your friends and family about them and report them to us when you receive them, but most importantly, just hang up and ignore the calls.” Social Security employees do occasionally contact people-generally those who have ongoing business with the agency--by telephone for business purposes. However, Social Security employees will never threaten a person, or promise a Social Security benefit approval, or increase, in exchange for information or money. In those cases, the call is fraudulent and people should just hang up. Generally, the agency mainly calls people who have recently applied for a Social Security benefit, someone who is already receiving payments and requires an update to their

While fake shopping sites are not new, the tactics in which they’re being deployed and spread continues to evolve. Facebook and Instagram ads, for example, are a prime gateway. Be wary next time you follow a “Nike Black Friday Cheap Deals” link if the website has a strange URL and images and that could easily have been grabbed from Google. While the “Nikes” may be heavily discounted, you’ll be waiting forever, literally, before the illegitimate business sends them to your doorstep.

record, or a person who has requested a phone call from the agency. If a person is not in one of these situations, they normally would not receive a call from the agency. Social Security will not: Tell you that your Social Security number has been suspended. Contact you to demand an immediate payment. Ask you for credit or debit card numbers over the phone. Require a specific means of debt repayment, like a prepaid debit card, a retail gift card, or cash. Demand that you pay a Social Security debt without the ability to appeal the amount you owe. Promise a Social Security benefit approval, or increase, in exchange for information or money. If there is a problem with a person’s Social Security number or record, in most cases Social Security will mail a letter. If a person needs to submit payments to Social Security, the agency will send a letter with instructions and payment options. People should never provide information or payment over the phone or Internet unless they are certain of who is receiving it. ...HOLIDAYS from page 1 stop in as many of our wonderful downtown retailers as possible,” said DeColfmacker. “Joining with neighbors, singing holiday songs, sipping cocoa and supporting local businesses – what is a better combination?” A Home for the Holidays brochure distributed at downtown stores will list all participants and attractions.

People and Business Profiles Sisters Bring Salty Girl Beauty to Life

KENNEBUNK SaltyGirl Beauty is based in Kennebunk and was founded by breast cancer survivor Sarah Kelly and her sister and oncology nurse Leah Robert. After Sarah was diagnosed with Stage 3 Triple Negative Breast Cancer, the duo realized there was a lack of healthy, organic and affordable skincare and cosmetic options available to the everyday consumer. So they created their own brand of nourishing beauty products which are organic, gluten free, vegan, non GMO, sustainable and made in the USA. Not only does SaltyGirl Beauty offer up amazing products, they’ve also created a community of women who are fearless and committed to thriving. They’ve partnered with Cynthia

Besteman of Violets Are Blue to create the Warrior Revolution. Recently, at their 2nd annual retreat which took place at the beautiful Nonantum Resort, cancer survivors, thrivers and caregivers enjoyed yoga, meditation, inspiring speakers and a cooking demo provided by Blue Apron. The retreat may have ended, but so many friendships have just begun. Warrior Revolution has recently created online communities on Facebook and Instagram in an effort to foster these special and much needed connections. Additional retreats will be announced soon and will take place nationwide throughout the course of the year. For more information, visit www.saltygirlbeauty.com.

Holy Spirit Parish Sing for Seniors Daniel E. Walsh, 64

KENNEBUNK All are encouraged to join families and individuals at Holy Spirit Parish in spreading Christmas cheer to residents living in senior communities in Kennebunk and Wells on Sunday, December 1. Following a 9 a.m. Mass at St. Mary Church in Wells, all are encouraged to gather for donuts and refreshments in the parish hall before departing via bus to Avita of Wells, an assisted-living community on 86 Sanford Road, where the carolers will sing 10:45-11:15 a.m. Then, the group will stop at St. Martha Church in Kennebunk to pick up addi-

tional carolers for a visit to Atria Kennebunk, a senior living community on 1 Penny Lane in Kennebunk, for caroling from 11:30 a.m. to noon. Following the caroling, the buses, provided by Ledgemere Transportation, will drop off participants at St. Martha Church and St. Mary Church. “We’ll bring some true joy to our elders who are most excited about this event,” said Fr. Fred Morse, pastor of Holy Spirit Parish. If you are interested in participating, email James Roche at jroche@hotmail.com or call Holy Spirit Parish at 207-646-5605.

J.G.

NORTH BERWICK – Daniel E. Walsh passed away peacefully on November 8, 2019. Born to the late Edward and Regina Walsh on November 13, 1954, Dan was raised in Malden, MA. Daniel was the loving brother of Kathleen (Berube) Walsh of South Portland, Maine, Joseph Walsh of Revere and Edward Walsh and his wife Pamela of Derry, NH. He was the dear uncle to Alyssa Artiano, Maxwell Berube, Ryan, Joseph, Andrew and Bailey Walsh and the cherished godfather of Brittney Anzalone. Dan is also loved and survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Dan was a U.S. Army veteran. He loved music, sports, and was an avid traveler, reaching 48 states by bus. Dan was a master of conversation and connecting with people. He was a Malden/New England historian with an amazing memory.

Dan touched the lives of so many Maldonians, affectionately known as “the Mayor of Linden” and, along with his mother and three aunts, was one of a long line of family retirees from the City of Malden. Most of all, Dan loved kids and spent most of his life looking after, babysitting, mentoring, and supporting youth activities. Upon retirement from the city, Dan began Malden school crossing guard duties. In 2012 Dan was recognized by Malden Mayor Gary Christenson receiving citations from both the City Council and School Committee for shielding a child from an oncoming car. For the past 3.5 years Dan lived in Maine with his goddaughter Brittney, her husband Michael McNamara and their daughters Addison and Lydia McNamara, who were the lights of his life. He loved nothing more than spending time with those girls, especially their morning routine of watching Paw Patrol and eating “Freddie’s” cereal.

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

WINTER DRIVING SAFETY Keep an emergency supply kit in your vehicle: A windshield scraper, small broom, small sack of sand for traction under wheels and/or a set of tire chains or traction mats. Matches in a waterproof container, a first aid kit and extra warm clothing. Keep vehicle’s gas tank full so you can leave right away in an emergency, and to keep the fuel line from freezing. Always use seat belts on and give your full attention to the road.

Dan always made people around him feel special in their own way, by highlighting, boasting, their skills and achievements. He will be missed by many. Services were held in Malden on Friday, November 15 by the A. J. Spadafora Funeral Home. Interment will be in Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden, MA. Local arrangements were entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick, where condolences may be expressed at www.johnsonfuneralhomeme.com. ...NUBBLE from page 1 School and Short Sands Parking Lot. A wheelchair accessible shuttle will depart from The Center for Active Living (36 Main Street). Folks needing the accessible bus may have one person accompany them, so that as many can fit on the bus. For those unable to attend the event, the Nubble Lighthouse Christmas lights display will stay on until January 1, 2020.

Don’t follow other vehicles too closely. Sudden stops are difficult on snowy roadways. Don’t use cruise control when driving in winter weather. Don’t pass snow plows. If you become stranded: Stay in the vehicle and wait for help. Display a trouble sign to indicate you need help by hanging a brightly colored cloth (preferably red) on the radio antenna and raise the hood; Run the engine occasionally to keep warm. Running the engine for only short periods reduces the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and conserves fuel. Use the heater while the engine is running. Keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow, and slightly open a downwind window for ventilation. For more information, visit www.maineredcross.org.

The Maine Hunters for the Hungry Program, a collaboration with Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, works with Maine Wardens, biologists, Marine Patrol Officers, Maine State Troopers and caring, generous hunters towards a common goal of helping Mainer’s in need. The program accepts bear, deer and moose donations. Road kill donations are also accepted, provided the meat is not damaged. Hunters do not pay for the processing of donated meat. Meat processing costs are paid for by the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry or the charity that receives the food. The program has been successful annually by supplying lean, high protein meats to food pantries, soup kitchens, and homeless shelters throughout Maine. Hunters for the Hungry offer a deep and sincere thank you to the hunters, corporations, and organizations for their past, present and continued support. Hunters choosing to keep their game can still donate a few pounds to the program. ~ Sports ~ Woodward Named Student-Athlete of the Month WELLS Wells High School sophomore Connor Woodward has been selected WHS Student-Athlete of the Month for September of 2019. He received this award for his academics and sportsmanship on the WHS Golf team. According to Wells-Ogunquit CSD Director of Athletics 6-12 Pierce Cole, Woodward qualified for the Class B Individual Golf State Championship held at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro on October 12. Cole pointed out that Connor faced “some tough playing conditions (but) shot an 84 to finish 7th overall in the state in Class B.” Presenting a plaque to Woodward on October 28 was Cole, Pamela Moody-Maxon, John C. Kreie, and WHS Golf Coach, Charley LaFlamme. “I feel like it’s a big accomplishment, especially from a golfer’s point of view,” said

Registration Open for Annual Turkey Trot 5K YORK York’s Annual Turkey Trot 5K, a collaboration of York Parks & Recreation and the York Rotary will take place on Saturday, November 30. The Race starts at Village Elementary School, goes down

to the Harbor, up Woodbridge Road and finishes at Town Hall. Race benefits the York Food Pantry and York Cross Country. Interested runners can register via the York Park & Recreation website at www. yorkparksandrec.org.

Woodward of his receiving this award, something that is rarely awarded to WHS golf players. “I am really proud of that.” Because of his demonstrated leadership with the other players, Woodward was handed the responsibility of being the junior assistant coach for the team this year. “He has lead the golf team both on and off the course by the way he interacts with teammates, opponents, officials and

coaches, not to mention his stellar performance during his matches,” commented Coach LaFlamme. “Connor is very intent on improving his game while at the same time displaying a respect and love for the sport as well as those that play and coach.” The WHS Golf Team currently has ten members. This season they finished with four wins and eight losses, hosting home matches at Old Marsh

Country Club in Wells. “Make no mistake about his competitiveness,” added Coach LaFlamme about Woodward, “There are very few amateur golfers in the state who can score lower.” In one match this year, Woodward shot an impressive 39 on a 9-hole course. The Student-Athlete of the Month program is sponsored by Wells High School, the Cole Harrison Insurance Agency and Moody Maxon Real Estate.
