Locals Take Part in “Dark Harbor” Film

Filming of “Dark Harbor” took place at Brewed Awakenings in Wells. Pictured is Sterling Hurst (yellow shirt), Connor Trinneer (officer in green), and Jessica Sipos (blond hair with back to camera).

By Nancy McCallum, Staff Writer SEACOAST If you get the chance to see Dark Harbor, a suspense film that will be released by summer of 2019, look closely, as you might see some local people you know. That barista pouring coffee could be Jacqueline Maude, owner of Brewed Awakenings in Wells. Does one of the extras in the funeral home scene look familiar? It could be, as funeral director Doug Bibber was in scenes shot at Bibber Memorial Chapel in Kennebunk. The production crew from North of Two, a film company

based in Los Angeles, travelled to Maine in late October to shoot scenes in several Maine locales, including Portland, Standish, Boothbay Harbor, Lincolnville and Isleboro. The film is being co-produced with APS Films. Theresa Przybylek, North of Two’s office coordinator, describes the story as “… a thriller about a Maine native that comes home from the big city when her father dies. She finds herself at the center of her father’s secret life unraveling. It is a contemporary Hitchcockian suspense thriller.” The movie is not a remake of a similarly named movie re-

leased in 1998 (and which also included filming in Maine). Dark Harbor is a screenplay written by Joe Raffa, also the film’s director. The cast includes Jessica Sipos, Meagen Fay, Joel McHale, Xander Berkeley (who owns property in Maine), Connor Trinneer, Jillian Armenante, and Sterling Hurst. “The state of Maine is essentially a character in the movie - its beauty and mystery - not to mention the time of year (and) the dramatic foliage,” Przybylek said. “Our cinematographer Edwin See FILM page 8...

YEF Granting Wishes Again

YORK The York Education Foundation (YEF) recently presented an unrestricted grant of $250 to Pam Whelan-Roy. Mrs. Whelan-Roy is a kindergarten teacher at Village Elementary School. An unidentified parent of a preschool-aged child nominated “any kindergarten gradelevel teacher while visiting the YEF “Granting Wishes booth at York’s Marketfest festival this past October, in anticipa-

tion of their child’s ascendency into elementary school and for their “gratitude to all kindergarten teachers. Every year YEF randomly grants “Granting Wishes funds following Marketfest. These unrestricted grants allow school staff to use the money in any way they see fit as long as its intention is to benefit students. Whelan-Roy is a deserving recipient, having taught at Village for more than 25 years.

The York Education Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization of volunteers who are committed to excellence in education. YEF’s mission is to provide funding for innovative and challenging curriculum in the York Public Schools that is beyond the scope of traditional funding. Over its existence YEF has raised and granted more than $250,000 to York school staff members in support of innovative programs. On December 12 and 19 Roberts Maine Grille will kindly host “Community Suppers at its restaurant in Kittery for the benefit of YEF. Please consider dining at Roberts on one (or both) of these evenings to help support YEF, as Roberts will donate a portion of its profits to the Foundation on each of these evenings. Also, YEF will host its third annual “Spirit of Giving event at The Wiggly Bridge

Work to Begin on the Town House School

KENNEBUNKPORT The Friends of the Town House School and the Kennebunkport Historical Society are thrilled to announce that the contract for rehabilitation of the Town House School has been awarded to local builder, Gary E. Martin, of Kennebunkport.

On October 30, Martin and the members of the Combined Building Committee (Sandra Severance, Barbara Barwise, Dana Dakers, and John Zimmerman) signed the contract which officially started the long-awaited rehabilitation project. Martin plans to move the

building off of its current granite foundation as soon as possible, add a new foundation base, and replace the building. This would then allow work to be done on the inside during the winter months. The Friends of the Town House School wish to convey their sincere thanks to all who, over the past three years, have helped to make this possible.

Fundraising continues for the rehabilitation as well as for maintenance of the Town House School. A Christmas Dinner is planned at the Kennebunk Inn

on December 5 which will celebrate this milestone. For tickets and information, call Barbara Barwise at 207-967-5253 or Judy Hyotte at 207-467-3357.

The crew brought in a few props, such as plants, but essentially left the restaurant as it is. The timing was perfect for Maude, as the seasonal shop closed after Columbus Day weekend. The shoot took about five

hours. “This is probably a oncein-a lifetime experience, she said. The film company also shot footage at nearby Joshua’s restaurant, Bibber’s Memorial Chapel and the Evergreen cemetery in Kennebunk. Przybylek praised all the participants for being so helpful. “ It is an honor to have had the support of the community, and it’s a memory the entire cast and crew will cherish, Przybylek said. “I certainly plan to vacation there with my family. North of Two’s CEO, Mark Cartier, had this to stay about his visit to Maine: “Maine was amazing. As a Minnesota native I have never met nicer people. Not to mention the food. I don’t think I have ever had so many lobster rolls in my life.

Eventually Buddy’s enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to embark on a journey to New York City to find his birth father, discover his true identity, and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. community deem Margaret an oddity — an other. Plain-spoken and direct, she is gifted with second sight—an intuitive ability to see beyond ordinary perception and distill what is seen to its practical essence. For decades her gift has benefited many while frightening others, often making her a target for jealousy, suspicion, and hatred. Margaret encourages young Emily Donne to recover abandoned gifts of her own, deal with the mystery that is her mother, and adjust to an onslaught of challenges. But even as Margaret guides Emily, supports friends and neighbors, and helps find those who are lost, some old business is coming back around, setting the stage for confrontations rooted in tragedies of the past.

OPA Screens Classic Film “The Nutcracker

OGUNQUIT The Ogunquit Performing Arts Classic Film Series presents legendary dancer Rudolph Nureyev, starring in his own production of “The Nutcracker with The Royal Ballet, London, co-starring Merle Park on Sunday, December 2 at 2 pm at the Dunaway Center, 23 School Street, Ogunquit. Filmed in full color at the Royal Opera House by the BBC, this historic performance from 1968 captures Rudolph Nureyev at the peak of his career, seven years after his dramatic defection from the Soviet Union in Paris’ Le Bourget Airport while on tour with the Marinsky Ballet. At the time, Nureyev was quickly offered a contract with London’s Royal Ballet, where he began his famous partnership with Margot Fonteyn, and also immediately began to re-choreo-

graph the company’s most traditional ballets. Nureyev staged The Nutcracker for the first time in November 1967 for the Royal Swedish Ballet, a version which would be revived several times in London, Milan, Buenos Aires and Berlin. He aimed to retain the ballet’s appeal to children while changing the balance of roles and choreography to be of more interest to adults as well. The work had traditionally featured the toymaker Drosselmeyer giving a magic nutcracker at Christmas to the child Clara, who is then escorted by the Nutcracker/Prince to a distant land of sweets, where she enjoys watching a series of dances by solo artists, climaxed by the famous Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Nureyev gave his version a new dimension: Drosselmey-

er and the Prince are one and the same person, representing the ideal man of Clara’s dream. Clara herself becomes the Sugar Plum Fairy and a young woman, joining her Prince in the final Grand Pas de Deux. With the additional choreography for these two, including another gorgeous Pas de Deux in the first act, Nureyev created two major roles suitable for a company’s leading dancers, and gave the ballet a more cohesive plot. This new approach was soon adopted in other companies and productions, including one by Baryshnikov for American Ballet Theatre ten years later. From the beginning of his career, Nureyev had already changed the role of the male dancer in the general repertoire, (which heretofore had tradition-

ally been to support and showcase the ballerina, with only a few solo moments for himself.) Nureyev dramatically upgraded the choreography, requiring the premier danseur to perform as intricate and demanding steps as the prima ballerina, whether in unison, mirror-image, or complementary fashion. He was also known for his thrilling and seemingly effortless leaps and jumps, implementing a combination of two skills: to jump very high while also con-

National Grief Study to Help Military Families Manage Loss tific study on the impact of service member death on surviving family members. These findings suggest surviving family members, who have experienced the loss of a service member, may benefit from help managing their loss and grief with programs that recognize their unique experience as military families. Over the last two years, the researchers have worked to develop new, innovative digital programs focused on loss, grief and wellness to support bereaved military families. The study is now seeking participants to enroll and help test out these programs. Eligible participants may include spouses, ex-spouses, adult partners, children, sib-

More info about participating in the study can be found on the Stepping Forward in Grief website: http://steppingforwardstudy. org. The digital programs are referred to as GriefSteps and WellnessSteps. GriefSteps is based on a model of grief therapy, used successfully with people with complicated grief, and suggests activities specifically designed to help individuals adapt to loss. WellnessSteps provides information and suggests activities designed to foster general health and wellness, including stress-management and health maintenance, which have been shown to help reduce distress. In both programs, participants can message a program “guide” who is available to answer questions and share observations. “As a retired military psychiatrist, I look forward to testing how these digital programs help bereaved military family members with loss, grief and wellness. We are pleased that over two hundred have already signed up to participate,” said retired Army Col. (Dr.) Stephen J. Cozza, co-principal investigator on the study. Cozza is a professor of Psychiatry at USU and associate director of USU’s Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress.

Don’t miss a moment.

“Equipping military families with resources that address the unique circumstance of their loss is an important part of honoring their service and sacrifice.” “Loss and grief are universally recognized as highly challenging life experiences,” said M. Katherine Shear, M.D., Marion Kenworthy Professor of Psychiatry at the Columbia University School of Social Work, and study co-PI. “Most people find a way to adapt to even the

most difficult losses when they are provided sufficient support. In studying how to help bereaved people who have not found a way forward, we came to understand the kinds of information and activities that can help. We are honored to have the opportunity to share these digital programs with bereaved military families and look forward to working with participants who join our study.”

American Red Cross Launches First Aid Course for Opioid Overdoses The American Red Cross has launched First Aid for Opioid Overdoses – an online course to teach people how to respond to a known or suspected opioid overdose. “An opioid overdose is a life-threatening emergency,” said Patricia Murtagh, CEO of the Maine Region of the American Red Cross. “When you suspect an opioid overdose, it’s important to start providing care immediately.” The overall drug overdose rate in the United States is on the rise. fatalities in the first half of 2018, with 84 percent caused by at least one opioid. The 45-minute course contains content on how to identify the signs and symptoms of a suspected opioid overdose and the appropriate care to provide based on the responsiveness of the person. Information on how to use several different naloxone products – including a nasal atomizer, Narcan® Nasal Spray and EVZIO® – to temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose is also included. People can register and access the course at www.redcross.org/take-a-class/opioiSee CLASSES page 19...

Health & Fitness Maine Governor Elect Urged to Address Youth Smoking Issue AUGUSTA The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced it intends to take a historic step forward in reducing the death and disease caused by tobacco use in our nation. The agency announced a multipronged approach on tobacco: its intent to end the sale of menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars, while also implementing restrictions on e-cigarette sales in certain locations. However, FDA’s response to protecting youth from e-cigarettes will not be sufficient in light of the startling new data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on skyrocketing youth e-cigarette use. The American Lung Association in Maine encourages Governor-Elect Mills and the Maine Legislature to address this epidemic by restoring recent cuts to Maine’s tobacco control program and fully funding efforts to reduce and prevent youth ecigarette use. “With today’s announcement, the FDA is taking an

important step forward in the effort to reduce tobacco use and protect the nation’s health,” said Lance Boucher, American Lung Association, Senior Division Director, State Public Policy. “However, this effort stands in the shadow of a new report showing significantly increased use of e-cigarettes by kids. The American Lung Association calls on GovernorElect Mills and the legislature to take swift action to protect kids from this e-cigarette epidemic and a lifetime of nicotine addiction by fully funding Maine’s tobacco control program at the recommended level, as well as closing loopholes in Maine’s flavored cigar ban and extending it to all tobacco products.” The data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed youth use of e-cigarettes has skyrocketed, with a 78 percent increase in high school students’ use of e-cigarettes since last year – meaning that one in five high school students are using e-cig-

arettes. It also shows a nearly 50 percent increase in the use of e-cigarettes by middle school students since 2017. While reducing youth access to ecigarettes is an important step, the Lung Association continues to urge the FDA to use its full authority to protect kids, including ending the sales of all flavored tobacco products, including all flavored e-cigarettes, from the marketplace. And in the meantime, the Lung Association is calling on states including Maine to take action now. In the 2017 biennial budget the Maine Legislature substantially cut tobacco control funding to a near historic low of $5.3 million, well short of the United States CDC recommended level of $15.9 million. The American Lung Association strongly urges the full funding of the program to best combat the tobacco epidemic in Maine. Additionally, in 2009, Maine became the first state to institute flavor restrictions, banning the sale of

flavored cigars. However, this legislation included an exemption for products currently on the market as long as no material changes are made to the cigar’s flavoring, packaging or labeling. For the ease of enforcement, and ensuring these products are not made available to kids, the flavor restrictions should be expanded to all tobacco products and exemptions removed. Home Cooking Fires can Occur at Th anksgiving According to the National Fire Protection AssociationÂŽ (NFPAÂŽ), there are more than three times as many home cooking fires on Thanksgiving as a typical day of the year, making it the leading day for US home cooking fires. This sharp spike (a nearly 250% increase over the daily average)

is a powerful reminder to use caution when cooking this year’s Thanksgiving feast. “Thanksgiving is a festive but hectic holiday, where people are often preparing several dishes at once. They’re also entertaining friends and family with lots of other potential distractions, said Lorraine Carli,

NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “These factors all contribute to the increased likelihood of home cooking fires and underscore the importance of being extra vigilant in the kitchen.â€? According to NFPA, cooking is the leading cause of reported home fires yearround, accounting for nearly half of all US home fires (48%) and reported home fire injuries (45%), as well as one-fifth (21%) of home fire deaths. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home cooking fires and fire deaths; 15% of the fatalities are attributed to clothing ignitions. Carli says awareness can play a critical role in keeping Thanksgiving fire-free. “Knowing where potential cooking hazards exist and taking basic precautions to prevent them can go a long way toward ensuring a fire-safe holiday.â€? NFPA offers the following tips and recommendations for cooking safely this Thanksgiving: Never leave food cooking on the stovetop unattended, especially when frying and sautĂŠing with oil. Stay in your home while the turkey is cooking and check on it frequently. Use a timer to keep track

of cooking times, most notably when simmering, baking, or roasting foods that require longer cook times. Check the stove or oven frequently. Consider putting timers in different rooms so you can hear them over music and party chatter. Keep things that can catch fire like oven mitts, wooden utensils, food wrappers, and towels well away (a minimum of three feet) from the cooking area. Push up shirt sleeves and avoid wearing billowy clothing that may come in contact with open flames or other heat sources. Avoid cooking when drinking alcohol, using other substances, or if you’re sleepy. Make sure children stay at least three feet away from all cooking areas, hot food, and liquids to avoid burns. Also, NFPA discourages the use of turkey fryers, which can lead to devastating burns, other injuries, and property damage. NFPA strongly suggests looking instead to grocery stores, specialty food retailers, and restaurants that sell deep-fried turkeys as a safe alternative. For more information, visit www.nfpa.org.

LeGrande (Sam) Ridgeway Howell, 92 ELIOT – LeGrande (Sam) Ridgeway Howell, born August 5, 1926, passed away on November 6, 2018 at his home in Eliot. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jane Lemmon Howell, his son, Thomas L. Howell along with his wife, Lori A. Howell, of Eliot, and his daughter, Ruth H. Sutton along with her husband, D. James Sutton, of Buskirk, NY. Sam and Jane’s oldest child, Ridgeway T. Howell, predeceased his parents in 2008. Sam also is survived by eight grandchildren, Hannalea Howell and Pierce W. Howell, both of Eliot; James R. Sutton of Washington, D.C.; Stephen E. Sutton, of San Diego, CA; Caitlin L. Sutton, of San Diego, CA; Taylor P. Sutton, of Denver, CO; Connor A. Sutton, of Hoosick Falls, NY; and Summer J. Sutton, of Phila-

delphia, PA. He is also survived by his adoring dog, LuLu. Originally from East Moriches, NY, Sam was one of three children and was the only son of Ruth Learie Howell and Ridgeway Taylor Howell. He graduated from Center Moriches High School in 1943 at the age of 16 and wanted to serve in the US Navy immediately after high school, but his parents would not consent to his joining the military as a minor. He was granted a scholarship to Union College, Schenectady, NY, and attended for several semesters until he was accepted into the V-12 Program, the pre-cursor of today’s ROTC. In 1944 he entered the Navy as a midshipman and later rose to the rank of a commissioned officer. Two weeks after the war was officially over, he boarded the USS Alabama as it entered Tokyo Bay and his ship anchored adjacent to USS Missouri when the Armistice was signed, officially ending WWII. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946, Sam briefly worked in construction until he was able to return to Union College to complete his bachelor’s degree and pursue graduate coursework at the University of Wisconsin. After his military service, Sam taught chemistry at Munson Academy, Wilbraham, MA,and later math, chemistry, and physics at Williston Acad-

emy, Easthampton, MA, where he also coached track and field. He took particular pride when, after coaching for four years, the team won the New England Championship. Following his teaching experiences, Sam made his career in sales and executive management at several companies: Lemmon Pharmaceuticals in Sellersville, PA; Tilden Yates/ Chemway in Worcester, MA; Cooper Laboratories; and Diamond Shamrock in Cleveland, OH. Over his career he and his young family lived in five states and abroad in Quebec, Canada and Mexico City, Mexico. In 1983, Sam and Jane moved to Eliot to start an innovative aquaculture business, Spinney Creek Shellfish, with their son, Tom. The business continues to provide restaurants and retailers with the finest shellfish today. Sam was a member of the Seacoast Wind Ensemble, served on the Eliot Board of Appeals, and was a volunteer at York Hospital for 13 years. Sam was known as a crusty “old salt who loved fishing, boating, and gardening. In his retirement he became a bee keeper. He lived on the Maine coast longer than any other location and marveled at all the area had to offer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cocheco Valley Humane Society, 262 County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820.

Kennebunk their home and Natalie, an only child, grew up spending summers between the Dane cottage on Great Hill Road and the Oliver Farm in West Kennebunk. She inherited the Dane cottage in 1963 and spent summers there ever since. Known for her spunk and spirit, Natalie spent her final years enjoying her beloved cat Harley, making her famous fish chowder and blueberry pie, sitting on the front porch of her cottage greeting much loved neighbors and friends, laughing with the now famous “girls, supervising the pulling of rocks out of her rose bushes, communicating with her late husband Jack (“It’s a boat day Jack) and honoring her father’s pet peeve by yelling at the passing cars to “SLOW DOWN! Natalie is survived by her son Fred and daughters Roxie, Joanne, Margo and June, as well as by five grandchildren – Andy, James, Maris, Brian and Eric and 2 great grandchildren – Finley and Clara. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I just got an email from UPS stating that I was not available when they attempted to deliver a package, and a second attempt will be made to deliver the package on the next business day. That’s nice, but I never ordered anything. There is a tracking number and a shipment detail link that I can click on, but I am a little nervous to click and see what is being shipped. Do you think this is a scam? Nancy Dear Nancy, I am 99.9% sure that it is a scam. Please don’t click on anything in that email! It is probably malware of some sort. In fact, it could be a very malicious piece of malware that encrypts all your

files (locks them up so you can’t access them) and then demands a ransom of $300 or more to unlock them for you. My advice to you, or anyone reading this is to never click on a link or open an attachment in an email that you are not expecting. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I’ve enjoyed your column for a few years -- useful answers without tech mumbo-jumbo. Now I have a question. I’ve used Microsoft Works a lot because it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles the other Office type suites have, but now Windows no longer includes Works. Can you suggest any other similar program? Thanks, Chas

Dear Chas, Microsoft discontinued Works in 2010, so the number of computers that can read and/or write Works files is dwindling. What can you do to replace Works? I can give you two, no cost, options to get started. 1. You can download and install the free, open source, Libre Office at: www.libreoffice.org Not only will LibreOffice allow you to create documents, spreadsheets and presentations, but it will also be able to open most of your Works documents. 2. You can switch to online document creation using Google Docs. Just head over to: www.drive.google. com where you can create, share and store documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, My Start Menu used to be across the bottom of my front page. For some reason, recently it now shows up top to bottom on the right side of my screen. Can you please tell me how to get it to run at the BOTTOM of the page, instead of the right side of my page? Thank you in advance for helping me get my front page looking like it used to. Sincerely, Carol

Dear Carol, Normally, your taskbar is on the bottom of your desktop, but you can customize it to be on any side of the screen. You can move the taskbar by dragging it to any side of your desktop, but an easier way is to follow these directions: 1. Right-click on a blank spot on the taskbar. 2. Click on “Properties in the context menu. 3. In the Taskbar and Navigation Properties window, make sure the “Taskbar tab is selected. 4. Find the drop-down list for “Taskbar location on screen: and select your desired position (bottom, left, right, or top) 5. Click the “OK button at the bottom of the dialog box to save your changes and close the dialog box. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have enjoyed your letters for a long time and now I have a question. How can I get rid of this popup: “remove the ad on the right and get an expanded view of your inbox by making att. net your default search engine. It keeps popping up and I can’t get rid of it. I finally made att. net my default search engine but it didn’t stop popping up when I make the window bigger and the ads disappear. Help! Doris

Dear Doris, While I don’t have an att. net email account to test with, my guess is that you are using the webmail interface and the ads are part of the att.net web page. They want you to use them as your default search engine because they make money when you click on their ads. There is probably not much you can do to get rid of the ads, but I do have a couple of suggestions for you. 1. You can install a pop-up blocker on your computer. I don’t use one, so I can’t tell you a good one, but most web browsers have built in settings for disabling pop-up windows so check the settings in the web browser you are using. 2. Get a good tune-up. Malware is a common cause of pop-ups (although probably not the specific pop-up you are describing) so be sure to get your computer cleaned out and updated once a year. A thorough tuneup has more steps than I can give here, and is probably not for the average user, so take it in to your local computer shop once a year for a good cleaning out. This is a service I provide for my customers. 3. Use an email program like Thunderbird. If you set up an email program, you won’t have to visit the att.net website to get your email and you won’t see the ads on their site. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Marissa, who has lived in Safe Haven care for 10 years, is now on her way to a wonderful forever home where her shyness will be understood and respected. Despite her beauty, potential adopters never chose Marissa because she was so shy. But her new mom recognized what a treasure she is. Now Marissa will have a fantastic life where she’ll have the love and space she needs. We want the same for all

the other kitties, especially shy older ones like Maddie and Stella. They’re ten now, surrendered when their owner was placed in a nursing home. They arrived sad and withdrawn, missing the certainty and love of their old life. Thanks to our volunteers, they soon relaxed and blossomed. These two sweeties love our sunny window ledges and comforts of our free-roaming rooms. They’re still shy but you can pick them up, and they enjoy being brushed. They’ll really blossom in a peaceful, quiet home – especially in time for Christmas. They really want to stay together forever, so if you’d like to share life with two lovely, healthy kitties, please visit us at 1420 Post Road, Wells, FMI, please call 207-646-1611. Since they’re “senior cats, their adoption fee is waived. We’re celebrating the holidays with an open house on December 8, 1-4 p.m. at our Adoption Center and from 11 a.m. - 4

Santa Paws Fest Event in Arundel ARUNDEL Vinegar Hill Music Theatre and Lucky Pup Rescue are excited to announce that they’re joining forces to create a new holiday experience and fundraiser on Prelude weekend. The weekend will offer lots of fun holiday activities and events for all family members -including the furry kind! The anchor event for Santa Paws Fest will be the highly anticipated third year of the Adopta-Tree Festival. There will also be lots of opportunities to celebrate the pets in your life and to raise awareness and financial support for the canine friends at Lucky Pup Rescue. The Adopt-a-Tree Festival, now in its third year, is a wonderful weekend of trees and wreaths beautifully decorated by local businesses and supporters. The

event culminates with each tree and wreath going home with a new family, just like Lucky Pup Rescue’s mission of matching dogs in need with their forever families. This year, the Adopt-aTree festival expands, adding a full array of activities and events for locals and visitors to enjoy. You can also decorate mini-trees and wreaths! To sign up or for more details, go to www.luckypuprescue.org/adopt-a-tree-festival. This year’s inaugural activities will also include pet pictures with SantaPaws/Claus, decorating gingerbread dogs, holiday face painting, live music, a hot cocoa and cider station and wreath making. Lucky Pup will offer educational opportunities through their “Awareness Station, which will feature adopt-

p.m. at our Thrift Shop. Please come and visit both – they’re just a few doors down from one another on Route 1. Refreshments will be served at both locations. Please come meet our kitties, and witness for yourself why we love the work we do. Tour our cage-free catrooms,

talk to our volunteers, enjoy the holiday music. Then visit our thrift shop and see why the work we do there (and the money it raises) is critical for paying our vet bills. Our shop will be loaded with holiday bargains, and our resident shop kitties are looking forward to meeting you. We hope to see you there!

~ News ~ Airbnb Thanksgiving Data Looks Promising for Maine STATEWIDE Ahead of Thanksgiving, Airbnb has released data on expected business in Maine over the holiday weekend (November 21-25). Along with the clear spike in guest arrivals statewide, nearly 1 million guests are expected to stay in Airbnb listings across the US on Thanksgiving Weekend, a record for Thanksgiving travel on Airbnb. In the US alone, home hosts will earn an estimated $270M and the money stays in the local community. In addition, an increasing number of these guests will be family travelers. It is projected that family bookings will increase 78% over last year’s Thanksgiving Weekend. Families are choosing Airbnb because Airbnb listings typically offer more space for less money and the kind of amenities like kitchens and common spaces that families need when they are on the road. The data on Maine includes: There will be approxi-

mately 4,400 expected guest arrivals in Maine over this Thanksgiving Weekend. This is up from approximately 2,900 guest arrivals the weekend prior and up from 3,400 guest arrivals last Thanksgiving Weekend. 25 Percent of expected guest arrivals in Maine over Thanksgiving are families. The top origin states for expected guests to Maine over Thanksgiving are Massachusetts, New York, and Maine (locals will be using Airbnb to see other corners of their state). Overall, expected guests to Maine are from a total of 24 countries, 47 states and 724 origin cities. The top three destinations for expected guests to Maine over Thanksgiving are Port-

land, Bar Harbor and Newry. Approximately 1,000 hosts statewide are expected to welcome guests over the holiday weekend, up from approximately 760 hosts the weekend prior and up from approximately 780 hosts last Thanksgiving. 62 Percent of hosts are women, and 26% are seniors (over the age of 60). Maine hosts will make approximately $553,000 this Thanksgiving, up from approximately $397,000 last year. The typical host will make approximately $378 over the holiday. Josh Meltzer, Head of Northeast Policy for Airbnb, offered this on Thanksgiving travel on Airbnb in Maine, “This November, family and friends will travel from all

Can Do Bottle Program Raises Funds, Seeks Volunteers KENNEBUNK / ALFRED Mark Brown runs the volunteer Can Do bottle program that operates out of the Kennebunk Transfer station. The program collects returnable bottles and cans, packages them for pick up by Cylnk, and once the returnables total value is tabulated on a monthly basis, he directs Clynk to transfer the money to two food pantries in Kennebunk and Alfred Maine. So far, the program is a success as the monthly average ranges between $600-1,200 a month to these food pantries. The program is totally volunteer and all proceeds go to the food pantries. At this time they are

trying to recruit volunteers for the program who will work 1-2 hours weekly packing bottles for the Clynk pick up. The work takes place Monday through Saturday and volunteers usually show up around 9:30 a.m. Volunteers are fully trained and are only allowed to do the work once they are comfortable with the task. Maine Student Climate Solutions Advocates Announce Success in Washington

WASHINGTON, DC Nine Maine high school students announced their success in Washington, DC, where they traveled with twelve other Maine volunteers, joining 601 volunteers from across the USA to advocate for climate solutions in Congress. gressional offices in just one day, urging Congress to enact favorable economic policies to reduce the heat-trapping pollution that is warming our state and the world with costly and painful consequences. Each of Maine’s four Congressional offices spent a good half hour with the Maine group, seriously discussing the problems climate change brings to Maine and the group’s proposed solution, the Carbon Fee & Dividend. At the end of a long day on Capitol Hill, Representative Chellie Pingree personally affirmed her commitment, made in Congressional election debates, to support CCL’s proposed Carbon Fee & Dividend. Students cheered in the halls of Congress and proclaimed success. “But, America needs a large bipartisan majority in both the US Senate and the House of Representatives, and a Presidential signature, if we are to pass a bill that can stand the test of

time” noted a group leader, Ed Pontius of Portland. And, Helen Strout of Cape Elizabeth High School insisted, “Our work must and will continue until our country and all nations are pulling together to stop Climate Change and protect life on this planet Earth, as we know it”. Lucia Daranyi, a student from Peaks Island, explained that “We nine students represented high schools in Kennebunk, Portland, Scarborough and Cape Elizabeth. We are members of the Maine Youth Environmental Association and the non-partisan Citizens Climate Lobby, which provided student scholarships that enabled all of us to participate.” According to Scarborough High’s Dyllan Hinton, “The Citizens Climate Lobby is seeking support for a carbon-pricing system known as Carbon Fee and Dividend. This program would put a fee on all oil, gas and coal we use in the United States.” Several independent studies

STATEWIDE AAA is advising drivers that this is a good time for a seasonal checkup of key vehicle systems in advance of the cold weather and winter driving conditions to minimize breakdowns. Harsh winter conditions make a vehicle work harder, particularly the charging and starting system, headlights, tires and windshield wipers. AAA’s emergency roadside service is prepared for harsh weather, as crews anticipate aiding members for dead batteries, flat tires, and with tows and recommends that motorists check the following vehicle systems: Battery: Clean any corrosion from battery posts and cable connections and wash all surfaces with battery terminal cleaner or a solution of baking soda and water. Have the battery checked by a professional to ensure it is strong enough to face cold weather. Tires: Examine tires for tread depth, uneven wearing and cupping. Check tire pressures once a month when tires are cold, and before driving for any distance. In extreme climates, a set of snow tires in some climates may be a wise investment for

winter driving safety. Engine: Have any engine drivability problems corrected at a good repair shop. Symptoms like hard starts, rough idling, stalling or diminished power could signal a problem that would be exacerbated by cold weather. Engine hoses and belts should be inspected for wear or cracking. Fluids: Important system fluids such as engine coolant/ anti-freeze, transmission and brake fluid should be checked and changed at recommended intervals. Brakes: Inspect brakes as recommended in your owner’s manual, or sooner if you notice pulsations, pulling, noises while braking or longer stopping distance. Correct minor brake problems promptly. Wipers: Replace worn windshield-wiper blades. If driving in harsh climates, purchase one-piece beam-type or rubberclad “winter” blades to fight snow and ice build-up. Use coldweather windshield washer solvent that won’t freeze, and carry an ice-scraper and snow brush. Lights: Inspect all lights and bulbs and replace burned out bulbs. Clean road grime or

ing should be so controversial. “After all”, he said, “Nearly all economists and scientists agree that carbon pricing is a necessary first step to resolving carbon pollution and climate change. When conservative economists, such as Greg Mankiw, and liberal economists, like Robert Reich, agree that such a solution will also be good for the economy and job growth, we should all take note.” Citizens’ Climate Lobby is a national, nonpartisan advocacy organization working to bring Republicans and Democrats together on market-based solutions to climate change. In addition to its signature Carbon Fee & Dividend, the group has been the primary catalyst for the formation and growth of the bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives, which now has ninety members, 45 Republicans and 45 Democrats. To date neither of Maine’s Representatives have joined the Caucus.

demonstrate that this market – based solution will drive down carbon pollution because energy companies and Americans will choose cleaner, cheaper energy options. All the money collected from the fee would be returned directly to every American household as a monthly rebate check worth hundreds of dollars. Most American households would end up with more money in their pockets and a cleaner and healthier environment. Nationally, conservatives have formed their own sister organization to promote a similar proposal. Led by Republicans George Schultz and James Baker, the Climate Leadership Council supports carbon pricing and rebates because this solution grows jobs and doesn’t grow government or regulations, and because it relies on the market rather than the government picking winners and losers. Another group leader, Jay Kilbourn of Kennebunk doesn’t believe that climate change and carbon pric-

clouding from all lenses. Hazardous storms and inclement weather are a factor in more than half a million crashes and more than 2,000 road deaths every winter, according to research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. AAA is encouraging drivers to be prepared and offers the below tips. Tips for driving in the snow: Stay home. If you really don’t have to go out, don’t. Even if you can drive well in the snow, not everyone else can. Don’t tempt fate: If you don’t have somewhere you have to be, watch the snow from indoors. Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Applying the gas slowly to accelerate is the best method for regaining traction and avoiding skids. Don’t try to get moving in a hurry. And take time to slow down for a stoplight. Remember: It takes longer to slow down on icy roads. The normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to ten seconds. This increased margin of safety will provide the longer distance needed if you have to stop. Know your brakes. Whether you have antilock brakes or not, the best way to stop is threshold breaking. Keep the heel of your foot on the floor and use the ball of your foot to apply firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal. Don’t power up hills. Applying extra gas on snow-covered roads just starts your wheels spinning. Try to get a little inertia going before you reach the hill and let that inertia carry you

to the top. As you reach the crest of the hill, reduce your speed and proceed down hill as slowly as possible. Don’t stop going up a hill. There’s nothing worse than trying to get moving up a hill on an icy road. Get some inertia going on a flat roadway before you take on the hill. Avoid using cruise control so you have a better feel for the traction of the tires. If you find yourself in a skid…. look and steer in the direction you want the car to go. Drive slowly. Everything takes longer on snow-covered roads. Accelerating, stopping, turning – nothing happens as quickly as on dry pavement. Give yourself time to maneuver by driving slowly. As North America’s largest motoring and leisure travel organization, AAA provides more than 57 million members with travel, insurance, financial, and automotive-related services. Operating 19 offices throughout Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, AAA Northern New England is a not-for-profit, fully tax-paying corporation and serves as an advocate for the safety and security of all travelers. ~ Sports & News ~

...SLED from page 35 some saucers can absorb shock for riders, making those downhill bumps a little easier on the backside. Keep in mind that sleds with steering mechanisms are easier to control, which can equate to safer sledding. Layer up It is best to dress in layers when going sledding Even if it seems warm at home, it may be colder and windier at the top of hills. Sweating when it’s cold out can increase a person’s risk for hypothermia. According to experts at Timberline Trails, a person who works up a sweat and comes in contact with ambient air when taking a break will feel an immediate chill. This is called evaporative danger, and can be remedied by dressing in layers and trying to stay dry.

Invest in a helmet Sledding requires the use of a helmet. At high speeds, a blow to the head can cause a concussion or worse. Let others go first Wait until some sledders have already gone downhill, allowing them to compact the snow, which should make for a smooth ride. Choose safe hills, such as those that are free of bare spots, holes, trees, and obstructions, and do not end abruptly at a road. Hills with a long, flat areas at the end make for easy, safe stopping. Safety first Put safety first when sledding. Sled during the daytime so visibility is better. Keep arms and legs on the sled, and only sled feet-first, advises the National Safety Council.

Rotary Clean Up Rain or Shine

By keeping these guidelines in mind, sledders can make sure this popular winter activity is as safe as it is fun. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.

SOUTH BEWICK, ELIOT & KITTERY Members of the South Berwick / Eliot And Kittery Rotary clubs braved the rain and cold on November 10 to clean up stretches of Route 236 between Kittery and South Berwick. The clubs also support many other local programs including End 68 Hours of Hunger, local food pantries, homeless shelters, opioid abuse prevention and scholarships.

Nationally, Rotary supports disaster relief and programs to fight against human trafficking. Internationally South Berwick / Eliot and Kittery Rotarians helped build and support schools in Haiti and Guatemala and rotaries big project to eradicate polio worldwide. The South Berwick / Eliot Rotary club meets Thursdays at 7 a.m. at the South Berwick community center and the Kittery Rotary club meets at 7:30 a.m. at Kittery Estates in Kittery.
