their Third Annual Thanksgiving Feast at the fire station. In Kittery, Footprints Food Pantry provided Thanksgiving baskets that included a meal with all the fixings to 130 families in curbside format on November 18. The Wells Junior High School’s 26th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner was offered as take-out meals for area seniors on November 18. Vicki Aldridge, who organizes the dinner, commented, “We handed out 357 meals. It was a wonderful day. Special thanks to the Congdon’s staff.” This popular holiday dinner is not only a gesture of goodwill offered to the community but part of a service learning project for eighth-grade students. Vision 2025 Open for Conversation KITTERY The Kittery School District is creating a new vision for the future of their K-12th grades. A series of interactive conversations has been offered for community members, parents, teachers, administrators, and students, to question engagement, success, and innovation in Kittery schools. The zoom sessions have already been held for October which asked “How has 2020 shifted our thinking about

schooling and education?” and November which asked “How do we educate our students in a rapidly changing world?” However, the December 7 session is upcoming and will consider “How do we ensure the success of all of our students?” The data collected from these conversations will go to a steering committee for compiling and then to focus groups made of interested individuals – eventually resulting in a formal Kittery School District Vision 2025 document. To partake in the next zoom meeting, register by calling Donna Schoff at 207-4751334 or emailing dschoff@kitteryschools.com by December 3.

page, instead of the right side of my page? Thank you in advance for helping me get my front page looking like it used to. Sincerely, Carol Dear Carol, Normally, your taskbar is on the bottom of your desktop, but you can customize it to be on any side of the screen. You can move the taskbar by dragging it to any side of your desktop, but an easier way is to follow these directions: 1. Right-click on a blank spot on the taskbar; 2. Click on “Taskbar Settings” in the context menu; 3. Find the drop-down list for “Taskbar location on screen: and select your desired position (bottom, left, right, or top). Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, I can no longer connect to a Wi-Fi network. The problem seems to be that the toggle switch in setup for Wi-Fi will not stay in the On position. Click it and it goes from on right back to Off immediately. Any ideas? Thanks, Steve Dear Steve, I do have a couple of ideas. First, make sure you haven’t accidentally turned on Airplane mode. There is usually a keyboard combination that if pressed, turns on and off airplane mode. I have seen the exact symptoms you describe on a laptop with airplane mode turned on. Second, do you have an Ethernet cable plugged in? I

have not been able to verify this, but Windows 10 appears to turn off the wi-fi when an Ethernet cable is plugged in. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, If I am a victim of a computer scam who do I contact? Fortunately, I caught the scam in time where I was able to stop payment on the check. But I want to report the company that scammed me. Thank you, Robert Dear Robert, There are a lot of different kinds of computer scams out there, so sometimes who you report it to depends on the details of the scam. Here are some good guidelines to get you started. You can always file a report with your local police department. In addition to filing the report, they will usually be able to help you figure out what other agencies you should report the scam to. Contact one or more of your state consumer protection offices. You can look up your specific state at www.usa.gov/ state-consumer. You can learn more about scams and what to do about them at www.usa.gov/

scams-and-frauds. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, My problem is my SD card is not being recognized when i insert it in the SD card reading slot on the computer. I have pictures to download. Thank you for your help, Betsy Dear Betsy, The first thing you need to do is determine if the problem is with your SD card, or with the card reader. To do that, I would suggest you try a different SD card in the slot. If that one doesn’t work either, the problem might be with the card slot. You should be able to purchase a USB SD card reader and plug it into a USB port on your computer. If the second SD card works in the slot on your computer, you might have a bad SD card. They do go bad after a while. If that is the case, simply purchase a new SD card and start using that for your pictures. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? FINANCE & CAREER History of Black Friday through Giving Tuesday Black Friday marks the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season. Come Black Friday, shoppers strive to get the lowest prices on gifts for their loved ones. Much of the focus of Black Friday is on finding the best deals, but it can be interesting to take a breath and

learn how this phenomenon developed and how it has evolved over the years. The term “Black Friday” was originally associated with gold prices and manipulation on the part of speculators Jay Gould and James Fisk. This scandal occurred in September 1869. Commodity prices plummeted 50 per-

cent as a result, and the term was coined to refer to that drop. The phrase also became famous for all the wrong reasons in 1966. Philadelphia police used it to refer to the Friday traffic jams and crowding in downtown stores from tourists and shoppers who flooded into the city in advance of the Army-Navy football game held the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year. Bigger crowds and rowdiness contributed to long hours and stressful shifts for local police. The retail industry started using the term “Black Friday” in the late 1980s. Spin doctors turned previously negative connotations into positive ones by associating the phrase with stores turning a profit and moving accounting ledgers from “red to black” thanks to big year-end sales. Retailers and

consumers rallied around lowcost “doorbusters” and other discounted prices. Interestingly enough, according to the National Retail Federation, Black Friday really hasn’t been the most lucrative day for retailers over the years. In fact, greater profits and larger crowds are often seen on the last Saturday preceeding Christmas. While Black Friday may have been the catalyst, in recent years shoppers have made the entire weekend of Black Friday a lucrative one for retailers. Many stores now open on Thanksgiving and extend sales through the entire weekend. Small Business Saturday and Sunday promote patronizing mom-and-pop stores. Cyber Monday emerged when online shopping became a popular way to grab deals, and

it marks the close of the opening weekend of the holiday shopping season. Giving Tuesday is also becoming pretty popular in its own right. Celebrated on the Tuesday following American Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday helps raise awareness that charity is an important component of the holiday season. The nonprofit services company Neon says nearly one-third of all annual giving occurs in December, with 12 percent happening over the final three days of the year. Giving Tuesday is positioned right in the midst of the most popular time for charitable giving. What makes Giving Tuesday unique is that it is largely fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. The day was actually created by the 92nd Street Y, a cultural center in New York City that has been instrumental in bringing diverse groups of people together with the goals of giving back through service. The 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation came together in 2012 to help form a day that was focused on the generosity of giving during the holiday season. Thus, Giving Tuesday was born. Health & Fitness More Public Health and Safety Measures Announced AUGUSTA Following an increase in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and positivity rates in the State of Maine, the Mills Administration announced new measures to mitigate the spread of this deadly virus. Beginning Friday, November 20 through Sunday, December 6, all outdoor and indoor amusement venues, movie theaters, performing arts venues, casinos, and businesses that provide seated food

and drink service, including social clubs, restaurants, and bars and tasting rooms currently open for outdoor service, will close for the night by 9 p.m. This limit on hours is designed to limit extended gatherings at a time when many students and family members are returning to Maine and at a time when social gatherings are more common, both of which will likely lead to more COVID-19 transmission. This latest measure is consistent with actions taken

by other states, including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, and New York, which require early business closures to minimize extended evening gatherings while preserving standard business operating hours. “As we enter the colder months and a holiday season when we customarily gather with friends and family, we are also entering a new and dangerous phase of the pandemic,” said Governor Mills. “Since the

Grants & Awards to Address Violence Against Women WASHINGTON, D.C. Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME) announced three Maine organizations will receive grants from the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW), totaling $843,619. These grants will be used to stop domestic violence, support rape crisis centers, and provide legal assistance for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. “The Violence Against Women Act is a success story. Since its groundbreaking passage in 1994, this bill has been an example of Congress working in a bipartisan way to address an intolerable problem — the problem of domestic violence. VAWA ushered in transformative progress by calling for the protection of all Americans from violence and abuse, and working to ensure survivors had access to essential services and to justice,” said Pingree. “Since this law was enacted, the rate of domestic violence has declined by over 50 percent.” The Maine Coalition To End Domestic Violence received $91,274 and the Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault received $152,345 for the State and Territorial Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Coalitions Program. This program supports the enhancement of coalitions by funding specific projects and is a set-aside program under OVW’s STOP Violence Against Women Formula Grant Program. State and territorial domestic violence and sexual assault coalitions serve as a collective voice to end violence against women, providing direct support to member rape crisis centers through funding, training and technical assistance, public awareness activities, and public policy advocacy. The University of Southern Maine received $600,000 for

the Legal Assistance for Victims (LAV) Grant Program. This program is designed to increase the availability of civil and criminal legal assistance programs for adult and youth victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking who are seeking relief in legal matters relating to or arising out of that abuse or violence, at minimum or no cost to the victims. Additionally, U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King recently announced that several organizations have been awarded a total of $2,312,338 to support rape crisis centers and assist victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking who are homeless or in need of housing assistance – also funding awarded through the OVW. The State of Maine received $388,589 to assist rape crisis cen-

ters and organizations that provide core services, direct intervention, and related assistance to victims of sexual assault, regardless of age. New Hope for Women in Rockland, in collaboration with Sanford Housing Authority and York County Community Action Corporation, received $515,000 to provide five scattered-site residences for survivors and their families through private landlord housing. Caring Unlimited Corporation in Sanford, in collaboration with New Ventures Maine, received $400,000 to provide 11 program-owned units and rental assistance for four scattered-site housing. The organization also received $498,496, in collaboration with York County Sheriff’s Office, to expand personnel, increase the efficiency of domestic violence case investigations, and strengthen planning and coordination efforts.

beginning of this pandemic, we have been performing a balancing act, basing our decisions on science and medical expertise, weighing the safety of reopening with the necessity of getting back to business. This targeted and temporary step will reduce extended gatherings while keeping the businesses open. Other steps may be necessary in the coming weeks if we do not get this virus under control. I ask all Maine people, please wear your face covering, wash your hands, watch your distance and avoid hosting or attending gatherings with friends and loved ones

unless it is absolutely necessary. Returning to normal life sometime next year first requires us to survive the holidays this year.” Additionally, DHHS announced that another 52 Walgreens pharmacies will begin offering free drive-through rapid COVID-19 antigen testing Friday to people in Maine experiencing symptoms of the virus. Three more Walgreens sites in southern Maine will begin offering antigen testing next week, bringing the total to 65 Walgreens sites throughout the state.

Russell. Maggie grew up in Renfrew, Scotland and graduated from Renfrew High School. Her beauty caught the eye of a young airman in the RAF in 1953. James Calder would periodically receive the local newspaper from home to keep up with football scores. In one of the editions, he saw a picture of Maggie and remembered her from the school they both attended. Although in the same class, they never communicated. James wrote her a letter, reintroducing himself, and asked her to accompany him to a movie when he was home on leave. They agreed to meet in front of City Hall. The movie was “Walking My Baby Back Home” starring Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds. They were married on December 24, 1955 and would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year. In 1960, Maggie and James relocated to the United States. Maggie earned her LPN certification from Northeast Regional Vocational school in 1973. Following graduation, she worked at Saugus General Hospital until it closed in 1978. From there, she worked at several nursing homes

Maine Churches to Change Attendance Capacity Temporarily PORTLAND In accordance with Governor Mills’ guidelines, Catholic churches in Maine will temporarily allow a maximum of 50 persons in attendance for indoor daily and Sunday masses, as of November 16. Strict adherence to state and diocesan protocols have led to the successful operation of the 141 Catholic churches in Maine during the pandemic. The protocols have included mandatory masks for Mass attendees; pew seating arrangements to separate

individuals/families; and proper sanitization of pews and all touched surfaces after each Mass. To date, no cases of COVID-19 have stemmed from a Mass at a Catholic Church in Maine since the start of the pandemic. The dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass continues to be in place, and the many live-streamed Masses being offered at churches around Maine (www.portlanddiocese. org) will also continue, enabling parishioners to participate in Masses from home.

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

~ Pets ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Due to Hank’s studious, wise and calming presence he is sometimes referred to as “The Professor” around our farmhouse at Cattail. This shorthaired, orange and white guru seems to look through you when he sits on your lap. At age three, Professor Hank has endured many life-changing experiences, and now he’s ready for the next chapter. When he first arrived he was quarantined in the farmhouse bathroom. Hank and a volunteer would frequently curl up and nap together in the clawfoot tub. The farmhouse radio can only tune in a country music station, so close your eyes and imagine the sight: a Johnny Cash tune playing as Hank and a 70-ish woman snooze

together in a bathtub. This is Safe Haven: crazy cat women (and a few men who love those crazy cat women). Once his quarantine ended, Hank moved upstairs with the other kitties. No bathtub, but a fluffy cat bed and a few other cats. He needed to find his place in the group. He was cautious at first and so were they, but Hank eventually found himself jumping into tunnels and enjoying the

fun and games all kitties enjoy. Hank loves life, being spoiled with good food and toys that chirp like birds. Hank is truly happy, and now awaits adoption. Hank just wants to be held and fussed over. He climbs up on your lap and begs to be held. He wants to be held all day and night. Hank’s ideal would probably be a home with older quiet children, or a someone who’s home most of the day, who could fawn over this gentle soul. Of course, if you have an antique clawfoot bathtub, that would be perfect. Visit Hank at Safe Haven’s Cattail Farm location. Call Joyce 207-229-8314. Last call for our beloved wild animals before the ground freezes. Put leftover halloween pumpkins out in your fields or backyards, instead of throwing in the trash. Wildlife feeds on them. Keep feeding the birds, too, and please if you spot any strays call Safe Haven or another No-Kill rescue for help. Mother cats and kittens are still out there, so don’t just grab a cat until you know better. You could be taking away a mother cat who needs to be nursing her helpless kittens. Put out food and water for them. Call a professional for help.

KENNEBUNK Home is the place where we have all spent more time than we ever thought possible this year. Home has been our refuge and has provided calm. Home has been the place that we have relied on for safety and comfort. But what about those pets without a home? AWS’ mission of providing humane shelter and care to pets temporarily in need of housing has never had more meaning than it has in 2020. More than 2,000 dogs, cats, and small animals have come through our doors. Through it all, we’ve never stopped making happy homes – sending our pets off to be a loving companion, precious partner, and member of their new families. But it hasn’t been easy. A gift today ensures that we continue to have the resources we need to make many more happy homes. To donate or learn more, visit www.animalwelfaresociety. org. Thank you!

At Cattail Farm, 1784 Route 1, Wells • 207-646-1611

Adoptions at our shelter at 1420 Post Road in Wells, have been booming. Many kitties are finding wonderful homes. Please visit our website to see available kitties and call 207-646-1611 to schedule a time to meet them. Right now a few mice have been spotted inside, and Safe Haven, being No Kill will not kill even the mice, and so we are working with a company who will close up any cracks in our building where the mice will come in. Meanwhile we have been humanely catching them and releasing them but now with the weather turning we have a volunteer who will care for them until spring when they can be released. Cattail Farm is cutting back on donation days to just one day a week, Saturdays only from noon-3 p.m. We have to refuse yard sale leftovers and anything that belongs in a dumpster. We cannot afford to accept items we must pay to dispose of. Please only donate the best quality housewares, clothing, linens. We will be happy to receive new or like new clothing, antiques, French country or Farmhouse, or beach house décor. We do welcome holiday décor at this time of year. FMI: 207-216-9169. Thank you all for all you do to help animals and please stay safe out there!

Emma’s Angels NORTH BERWICK Our sweet Thanksgiving pup of the week is Bliss! She is a four month old Louisiana mix looking for a happy Maine home. Technology and social media play a large role in uniting people for Giving Tuesday. Founding partners included Mashable, a technology website, Skype and Cisco. But the success of Giving Tuesday is thanks in large part to the general public, who have both spread the word and made their own contributions to charity. In 2017, Giving Tuesday soared to new heights when technology mogul Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, announced their foundation would match up to $2 million in donations to Giving Tuesday fundraisers started on Facebook. Facebook similarly waived its 5 percent fee for U.S.-based nonprofits all day long. The global Giving Tuesday movement helped raise more than $300 million online across more than 150 countries in 2017 alone. This year, the Giving Tuesday organization is poised to top their numbers and continue to improve upon the more than 46,000 participating organizations involved in their charitable efforts. Public Service Announcement York Water District

York Water District would like to make our ratepayers aware of a recent decision by the Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC): As of November 1, 2020, the Maine PUC has voted to lift the Emergency Moratorium on utility service disconnections that had been in effect since March 16, 2020 (MPUC Docket No. 2002-00081). While most customers are not affected by this decision, there are a few hundred customers that have either fallen behind or stopped water bill payments altogether in recent months without contacting our office. We take service disconnections very seriously and this option will always be a last resort, but it is important to note this collection method will now be in use as the situation dictates. Therefore, All accounts with a past due balance with York Water District have received a notice by mail informing them of the MPUC decision. Following this announcement, we will attempt to contact customers by phone to discuss a payment arrangement that is suitable to individual situations. We understand every situation is different during this unusual time. We will be flexible as we work to bring all accounts back to good standing. Please call us at (207) 363-2265 to establish a payment arrangement or with any questions or concerns. Customers that cannot be contacted in a reasonable amount of time or are unwilling to make a payment arrangement will be issued a 10-day disconnection notice. If payment arrangements are not made within 10 days of notice, service disconnection will follow. Please be advised, York Water District is required by Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) rules to offer you a reasonable payment arrangement on your past due account balance and if we cannot agree on an arrangement, you have the right to seek assistance from the Consumer Assistance and Safety Division (CASD) of the MPUC. You can reach the CASD at (800) 452-4699 or at CASD.PUC@maine.gov. If you are having difficulty paying your utility bills, you may be eligible for financial assistance. You can learn what financial assistance is available by calling 211 and requesting a list of assistance agencies near you or by visiting their website at www.211maine.org and entering your town name.
