15th Annual Spirit of Giving Campaign is Underway OGUNQUITWhat is the spirit of giving? These words mean many things to many people, but in Ogunquit, they conjure up visions of hundreds of gifts gathered for needy children throughout the state. The Ogunquit Spirit of Giving Committee has been gathering gifts for over a decade to provide for children as the spirit of giving grows within the community. Gifts are collected for specific individual children served
by two Maine non-profit organizations: Adoptive and Foster Families of Maine (AFFM) and Frannie Peabody Center (FPC). The committee works with the Kinship Program of AFFM. That program works with kids who are being raised by relatives other than their natural parents. “It’s primarily grandparents raising their grandkids,” said Bette Hoxie, the program’s director. “Sometimes it’s an aunt or uncle. Most are on fixed incomes and
most don’t get reimbursement from DHHS as foster parents do. Holiday gifts are a luxury for many in this population. In order to provide gifts for the children, the care providers would need to use money that would otherwise be used to heat their homes or pay for food, utilities, medicines or other essentials.” Katie Rutherford, Development Director of the Frannie See GIVING page 2...

Dual Groundbreaking at PNSY KITTERY U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) delivered remarks at a dual groundbreaking ceremony at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) for two projects: the new Paint, Blast, and Rubber Facility and the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Consolidated Warehouse. The ceremony was also attended by Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH). The groundbreakings came hours after the announcement of a contract award for a third, separate project: a nearly $158 million contract to modernize Dry Dock #1.

KENNEBUNK With community support from Chris Wells at Redfin Solutions, LLC, the Kennebunk Police, the New School, the Kennebunk Free Library and others, the non-profit Center for Social Isolation Remedies recently launched two programs. In collaboration with the New School, several students braved the cold on November 8 to put up posters and to wave placards in downtown Kennebunk. The sign-wave drew attention to the new local organization: www.socialisolation.org. The Center’s mission is to help people of all ages who feel socially isolated to join the community. The students encountered
considerable interest and provided flyers to those wishing more information. Just days later, the Kennebunk Free Library together with Center for Social Isolation Remedies, provided its first nocost, round-table workshop to discuss ways to increase community involvement in everybody’s lives. The next discussion will take place December 5, 2-3:30 p.m. at the Kennebunk Free Library and will be led by Susan Richards. She will discuss the November issue of Oprah Magazine and its very good article on loneliness; it’s causes, consequences and solutions. The event will be in the library’s Walker Room, and everyone is invited.

~ Library News ~ A Time Remembered: Pictures and Drawings of the Past KENNEBUNK The public is invited to the upcoming December exhibit at the Kennebunk Free Library – “A Time Remembered: Pictures and Drawings of the Past”. Featuring the works of Gerald and Linda Stone, there will also be an artist’s reception on Friday, December 6, 3-5 p.m. at the library, which is open to the public. Gerald was born in Dover, NH, whose art education started early in childhood before going outside to play ball. Through high school he loved drawing sports figures and his UNH mechanical drawing classes led him to working as a draftsman for architectural and engineering
firms. Later in life, Gerald returned to the freedom of pastel, watercolor and pen and ink. “Living in Portsmouth, NH, where you are surrounded by history, planes, ships, submarines, beautiful beaches and ocean give me so many subjects to draw and paint,” said Gerald. Linda’s art education started with her father who was a carpenter who became blind but continued working with wood. Linda helped him by cutting wood with a bandsaw. “That began my love for wood and creating. In 1990 I began designing primitive art. I didn’t start painting until retirement in 2012. I love the beauty

‘Nut/Cracked’ Returns to The Dance Hall KITTERY The Bang Group’s Nut/ Cracked returns to The Dance Hall for two performances on Friday, December 6 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, December 7 at 2 p.m. David Parker’s Bang Group first brought the house down with their performance of Nut/ Cracked at The Dance Hall in 2016. This hilarious rendition of the storied holiday production is performed to perfection by a company of exquisitely trained artists. It’s The Nutcracker, but definitely not as we know it. The Bang Group has taken every little girls favorite Christmas show and torn it limb from limb. Mixing Tchaikovsky’s origi-
nal score with music by Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller and others, the company turns the sugar coated ballet into a percussive piece of dance theatre. Expect tap dancing, singing and some unusual pointe shoe activity. Nothing is sacred as Nut/ Cracked twists and melds various dance traditions into an ode to American eclecticism which honors the power of the human urge to dance while riding Tchaikovsky’s voluptuous waves of rhythm. Tickets are $20 Senior/ Child in advance, $25 at the door; and $25 Adult advance, $30 at the door and can be purchased at www.thedancehallkittery.org.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ A Victorian Tradition Continues at Clay Hill Farm CAPE NEDDICK Christmas By The Sea Weekend in Ogunquit marks the return of Clay Hill Farm Presents...“A Christmas Carol: A One-Man Musical Tale.” Local actor, Kirk Simpson, brings this one-man, musical extravaganza to life with a brilliant theatrical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ timeless story with original heart-warming music and lyrics by Nancy Day. Simpson, recently starring as King Richard XI at King Richard’s Faire in Carver, MA and the star and co-founder of Clay Hill Farm Presents…, has brought many beloved historical and fictional characters to life since the theatrical dining series at Clay Hill Farm Restaurant debuted eight years ago. During the 1800’s, Charles Dickens toured throughout Europe and the U.S. reading and performing, his famous tale for thousands, giving voice to all his beloved characters. In the Victorian style, Kirk Simpson dons his top hat and continues the “Carol” tradition with original music by Nancy Day. Audiences interact with Ebenezer Scrooge prior to the show opening, giving them a hysterical taste of who this curmudgeon really is. With a little help from the audience, Simpson then performs a powerhouse, one-man musical extravaganza, bringing ALL the beloved classic characters to life while guests enjoy Clay Hill Farm’s delicious drinks and sumptuous food. Kirk Simpson is one of the founders of Clay Hill Farm Presents..., bringing to life such greats as Edgar Allen Poe, Charles Dickens, Robert Frost, Benjamin Franklin and Henry VIII, as well as a full cast of original characters in WHO?: A One-man Murder Mystery- written by Simpson. Having over 25 years experience in entertainment, his talents vary from mu-

sical theater, drama, comedy, interactive theatre, murder mysteries, choral singing, historical recreations, renaissance fairs, children’s theatre, voice over, and so much more. Simpson also works as a freelance graphic designer and artist. Composer, singer and lyricist, Nancy Day from Newburyport, MA, lends her talents to composing original music and lyrics for this family favorite. With an incredible talent for storytelling, poetry, and music, Day worked closely with Simpson to create a very special personal and intimate telling of this classic tale. Her imaginative musical score has audiences dancing in the aisles for the Holiday season, providing the musical backdrop for Simpson, as he weaves the tale of Merry Olde England, Ebenezer Scrooge and all Dickens’ characters, in this family Holiday Classic. The relationships and stories that began at The Goldenrod are a piece of the larger story of a business that has contributed to shaping generations, as well as a small community. Lifelong relationships blossomed as people in the community worked side by side, day after day, keeping the tradition alive. Watching each new generation get introduced to The Goldenrod is an employee favorite. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, Thanks so much for your newsletters. My question is I took a video on my iPad of a friends 80th birthday – how do I make a DVD of it for her? The photos have been no problem it’s its just the video please help. Diana Dear Diana, It sounds like you need a program for creating DVDs. Photos are fairly easy to put on a disk that can be read by your DVD player, or any computer, all you have to do is burn the photos on a disk. DVD videos, on the other hand, need to be converted to a format that can be used by DVD players. If you just burn the video file to a DVD disk without converting, you will only be able to play the video on your computer. To do this, use a program like Roxio My DVD. It allows you to take the video you made, edit it, and then share it on DVD or even on social media sites like facebook. You can check it out at www.roxio.com. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I had Picasa on an old computer. On my new computer I use Windows 10. In transferring personal stuff, I am told I can’t transfer programs; I will have to install or download in the new system. Is this correct? Thanks, Ruth Dear Ruth,
You are correct that you can’t transfer your programs from one computer to the next, but you can install programs on the new computer. When I purchase programs online, I save the file that I downloaded, along with the registration information, like the product key in a folder so that I can re-install the program in the future if needed. Since Picasa is no longer available, I would suggest that you download and install the free program, FastStone Image Viewer from www.faststone.org. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I really enjoy your newsletter and hope you can help me. I have been using Picasa for years to edit photos and then post on a listing to Etsy and a couple of other online stores. It has been very easy to use. Now, all of a sudden my unedited photos are showing up on etsy instead of the edited photos. Picasa does not seem
to have a help desk and their user forum has tried to help but so far nothing works. Do you have any ideas? Failing that, can you recommend another photo hosting site that is not too complicated? I am not very tech savvy. Thanks! Barbara Dear Barbara, Since I have not been able to observe your process when editing photos, I can only guess at what is going wrong. Here are a few things to check. 1. Are you clicking the “Apply” button after editing your photos? 2. It appears that Picasa only saves some of the changes in the program unless you resave the file. Once you are done making your changes, click on “File” and “Save As” and save a copy of your picture. Upload the new copy to your Etsy listing. 3. You can also export the picture to a folder of recently updated photos, then use that folder to upload your pictures to Etsy. Just click,
“File”, then, “Export Picture To Folder” Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I recently had a new hard drive installed. My old drive is now my D: drive, and my new one is C: I have installed Windows, and all my programs on the new C: drive, and only want to use the older drive for backing up my data files. Is it safe to delete the Windows folder on the D: drive? Thank you, Alfred Dear Alfred,
WS
Yes, it is safe to delete the windows folder on your old drive. You might want to look through it first to make sure you don’t want to save anything. Internet Explorer, for example, saves it’s bookmarks in the Windows\favorites folder. Backing up to a second hard drive is a great idea! Elizabeth Interested in learning more? — to their parents, spouses, partners, and loved ones in 2017, according to state data available in the latest report of AARP’s Valuing the Invaluable series. The complexity of family caregiving increases as medical and nursing tasks continue to enter the home, and family demographics change amidst an aging population. “AARP Maine is proud to recognize family caregivers whose tireless efforts help older parents, spouses and other loved ones remain in their homes,” said Lori Parham, AARP Maine State Director. “Caregiving is a labor of love, but sometimes it is more than a full-time job. We hope that this latest report will emphasize how much caregivers need support so they can continue to provide care for others.” In 2020, AARP will continue to fight for commonsense solutions to give family caregiv-
ers more support. These solutions include: Home and Community-Based Care: Increasing or protecting against decreases in the number of older adults who have access to services at home, like home care and adult day care. Respite Care: Increasing services that allow family caregivers to take a hard-earned break. Telehealth: Breaking down the barriers that prevent use of telehealth and investing in digital information and communi-

but is there scientific proof behind the recommendation? The 10,000-step standard - which equates to roughly five miles, depending on a person’s stride length and speed - has some surprising origins that are not necessarily rooted in medical science. I-Min Lee, a professor of epidemiology at the Harvard University T. H. Chan School of Public Health and the lead author of a new study published in May 2019 in The Journal of the American Medical Association wanted to explore the origins of the 10,000-step recommendation. She discovered the guideline evolved from a marketing strategy devised by a Japanese company called Yamasa Toki. That firm introduced its new step-counter in 1965, naming it Manpo-Kei, which translated into “10,000 steps meter.” They marketed the meter using the Japanese character for “10,000,” which resembles a man walking. The character and round number proved memorable and the slogan, “Let’s walk 10,000 steps a day” was catchy. As a result, many people adopted the 10,000-step approach, even though its medical benefits might not have been proven. But this isn’t to suggest that taking 10,000 steps per day cannot be part of a healthy living plan. In fact, such a goal promotes physical activity, which is a key component of a healthy lifestyle. However, simply taking 10,000 steps per day might not be enough to achieve long-term health. Lee conducted her own research to test if the Japanese were on to something by inadvertently setting the 10,000step standard. She found that an increase in walking correSee STEPS page 21...

Health & Fitness Red Cross Offers 10 ways to Safely Decorate for the Holidays STATEWIDE Christmas and New Year’s are the top days for home candle fires in the U.S. and the American Red Cross of Maine wants everyone to stay safe as they deck the halls this holiday season. Decorations like trees, lights and candles increase the risk of home fires during this festive time. In fact, Christmas, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are the days with the most home fires caused by candles in the United States. 10 Holiday Decorating Safety Tips Use battery-operated candles. If you must use candles, never leave them unattended, keep them away from anything that could burn, and place them out of reach from children and pets. Check all holiday light cords to make sure they aren’t frayed or broken. Don’t string too many strands of lights together. Don’t use more than three per extension cord. When decorating outside, make sure decorations are for outdoor use and fasten lights securely to your home or trees. If using hooks or nails outside, make sure they are insulated to avoid an electrocution or fire hazard. However, when these women reached about 7,500 steps the mortality rates leveled out, suggesting that those extra 2,500 steps might not be necessary. Even the manufacturer of one of the most popular fitness trackers, Fitbit, says that users’ step goals can vary depending on need, and that goals may even shift over time. People who are looking to lose weight and maintain their existing health will need to modify their step count accordingly. Working with a qualified trainer or using a medically sanctioned training program can help people exercise safely and effectively. Taking 10,000 steps per day may help people achieve their health-related goals. But 10,000 steps alone likely won’t be enough to achieve optimal health. tree, look for the fire-resistant label. When putting it up, keep it away from fireplaces, radiators and other sources of heat. If getting a live tree, make sure it’s fresh and water it to keep it fresh. Bend the needles up and down to make sure no needles fall off. Don’t use electric lights on metallic trees. If hanging stockings on the fireplace mantel, don’t light the fireplace. Turn off all holiday lights
when going to bed or leaving the house. If using older decorations, check their labels. Some older tinsel is lead-based. If using angel hair, wear gloves to avoid irritation. Avoid breathing in artificial snow. If using a ladder, be extra careful. Make sure to have good, stable placement and wear shoes that provide good traction. The Red Cross also advises people to test their smoke alarms and practice their home

Through ride- alongs, officers and crisis team members will build relationships of trust and shared language that becomes very important when working

It’s that moment that leads them to the community connections and treatment that will set them on the path to recovery,” said Debra Taylor, President and CEO of Sweetser. In the fall, Sweetser representatives, Kennebunk Police Chief Robert MacKenzie, Kennebunkport Police Chief Craig Sanford, York County Sheriff

This type of partnership born out of a community that cares is key to the success of those that struggle,” said Kennebunk Police Chief Robert MacKenzie.

BUSINESS & FINANCE Caregivers: How to Manage a Loved One’s Money The number of retirees is on the rise. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau points out that, by 2030, there will be 81.2 million Americans over age 65, and many of them will need help taking care of themselves. Caregiving is a big re-
sponsibility. One crucial role caregivers may take on involves managing a loved one’s finances. AARP states that acting as a money manager becomes especially important if a loved one begins having trouble keeping a checkbook or becomes confused about money. The Family
Maine Home Sales and Values Up in October AUGUSTA The $224,900 median sales price of a single-family existing home in Maine in October 2019 was 4.6% higher than October 2018, according to data released by the Maine Association of Realtors. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. Realtors also reported a record-breaking 1,845 sales for October—an increase of 0.71% compared to October 2018. “REALTORS® across Maine report motivated and focused buyers searching for homes. Through October, the number of home sales statewide in 2019 has exceeded our best-ever (2018) by 0.8 percent.” says Peter Harrington, 2019 President of the Maine Association of REALTORS and Broker/Partner with Malone Commercial Brokers in Portland. The National Association of Realtors reported a 5.4% increase in single-family existing home sales on a na-
tional scale comparing October 2019 to October 2018. Prices jumped 6.2% to a national MSP of $273,600. Regionally, sales in the Northeast remained flat while prices rose 5.7% to $296,700, comparing October 2019 to October 2018. “Sales volume remains steady,” says Harrington. “Median prices trending upward in some markets are indicative of tight for-sale inventory levels and the sustained historically low, and affordable, mortgage interest rates,” says Harrington.
Caregiver Alliance® indicates millions of Americans are managing money or property for a family member or friend who is unable to pay bills or make financial decisions. Juggling one’s own finances and the responsibilities of another person’s money can take its toll. Here are several ways to navigate these often tricky waters. Discuss plans in advance. Have conversations even before an aging loved one needs caregiving. Talking through difficult topics when parents are healthy can simplify decisions later on. Open a joint account. Joint back accounts make it easier for caregivers to manage loved ones’ money if the person becomes physically or mentally incapacitated. When necessary, you can step in as a money manager to pay bills, make deposits and withdrawals and monitor account balances. Make legal fiduciary changes. AARP suggests drawing up legal documents to manage all financial accounts. A power of attorney is a legal document in which one person
assigns another the power to make financial decisions on their behalf. This also protects family interests, so that another relative like a sibling, who may want his or her share of a loved one’s money, will not have access. Documenting fiduciary changes in the letter of the law can serve as a measure of protection against potential problems. Put your priorities first. You may end up running yourself emotionally and financially ragged catering to a loved one’s needs. According to a 2015 study from the National Alliance for Caregiving, an estimated 43.4 million American adults provide
unpaid care to an adult or child. Taking repeated time off of work or paying for loved ones’ needs out of your own pocket can take its financial toll. Do not take on unmanageable debt. Ask for help. Speak with a financial advisor and/or elder care attorney about the best ways to manage a loved one’s money to ensure an aging parent or child will be provided for. Arranging assets in certain ways can make individuals eligible for certain benefits. Managing money is just one of the many tasks associated with being a caregiver.

As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

KENNEBUNKPORT – Marcia Symmes Harmon passed away with her three daughters by her side on November 13, 2019. She was born April 11, 1935 to the late Chandler W. Symmes and Lorna B. Symmes, and is a graduate of Winchester High School, class of 1953, Colby Jr. College (Colby-Sawyer College now) class of 1955 and Katharine Gibbs School in 1956. Marcia married John Hay Caldwell in 1957, divorcing in 1974. She later married Charles (Chuck) A. Harmon, Jr. on January 15, 1977 and moved to Kennebunkport where they spent 28 wonderful years together on Langsford Road until his death in 2005. Together, Marcia and Chuck enjoyed traveling the globe and a yearly escape to their beloved St. Croix, playing their daily Parcheesi game along the way. Marcia was an avid cook and hostess. missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth.
John graduated Wells High School before beginning his 20year military career, first in the U. S. Army then the U.S. Air Force. In 1955 John married Juanita Johnson. They raised their family in Wells where John worked for the U.S. Post Office as Postman for 10 years then on to the Maine Turnpike Authority as a toll collector. He stayed active throughout his retirement with playing cards, volunteering at the Ogunquit Playhouse; Wells Ogunquit Senior Center and past president of the Mill Pond Condos. He was predeceased by his wife, Juanita Graves in 2001 and daughter Tammy Tebbetts in 2008. Surviving are his son Jeff Graves and his wife Patricia of Wells; sister Shirley Fearon of West Gardiner; eight grandchildren, January and John Tebbetts, Alexis Jones, Michael Spinney, Sonya Spencer, Michael, Andrew and Dennis McLatchy, Jr; and many great-grandchildren. Visiting hours were held Sunday, November 24 at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick, where a funeral was held Monday followed by interment in Oceanview Cemetery, Wells. Friends who wish may contribute to the Wells Ogunquit Senior Center, PO Box 987, Wells, ME 04090. Arrangements entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick. Condolences may be expressed at www.johnsonfuneralhomeme.com. • • • • • • • • • •
There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

~ Pets ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS This is Ella and she’s had her ups and downs. For starters, her former family sadly had her declawed and just fed her dry food which resulted in her gaining too much weight. Later, when a dog was introduced to the home, poor declawed Ella was terrified and defensive and she ended up at a vet’s office to be euthanized. Luckily, the vet had good sense and a big heart, and Ella was spared and placed in a holding facility where Safe Haven met her and offered to help. Now in a foster home with Safe Haven, Ella is enjoying being part of a real loving home where she’s on a healthier diet, getting exercise, and getting brushed and groomed by her faithful foster mom who describes her as a lovable busybody

whose always exploring her new digs. Weighing in at nearly 19 pounds even Ella’s purr is huge! However, her chubby bulk means she needs extra help to keep herself clean. She can’t reach every area of her body herself – so mom needs to use medicated wipes to help her out. She’s a beautiful, big, longhaired, orange beauty, ready to enjoy the life that was nearly taken from her. If you’d like to meet Ella, call Joyce at 207-2298314 and we’ll arrange a meetup. Safe Haven’s shelter remains temporarily closed. We’ll announce when we reopen. If you wish to see a kitty, please
call 207-646-1611 to make an appointment. Our shelter really needs your support to get through this difficult and expensive time. We need medical disposable booties, hairnets, disposable gloves, trash bags, paper towels, canned friskies, HE laundry detergent and additional volunteers! Please call Joyce if interested. Our thrift shop is a-bustle, getting Christmas decorations out so everyone’s home is trimmed from top to bottom. We happily welcome your holiday trims, quality homewares and cook- and bake-ware which are really selling well due to the holidays. As always, good quality clothing, jewelry, giftware and unique treasures are always welcome. We have a special need for Christmas colored yarn skeins, because a volunteer is knitting toy mice for our shop to sell. So bring in your red, green and variegated holiday colors, please. Our shop is open seven days a week: 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Thursday and 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday - Sunday. Your purchases support our no-kill cause. Thank you for all your help and support.
Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK This lovely calico is “Peanuts”. She is between 1.5-2 years old and very sweet. Peanuts was a stray found outdoors, pregnant and alone. She was brought in by a family who fostered her and her babies. Her babies have gone on to find their loving homes and although her foster family had intended to keep her, Peanuts is just not fond of dogs which is too bad as the family also has a dog and it simply wasn’t working out.

...WESELY from page 30 vember 17, 2019 with family by her side after a long struggle with pulmonary fibrosis. She was born in Brazil on June 20, 1944, the daughter of Higino and Maria Silveria (Ramos) Pinheiro and graduated from school there. In 1976, Maria moved to the United States, becoming a U.S. citizen in 1988. Maria raised her children in Sanford and worked for Sprague Electric and Cyro. After taking several classes, Maria worked at the National Passport Center in Portsmouth, NH, at the International Help Desk where she was extremely good at her job. Maria was a selfless woman
who loved helping people. She would go without just so others would have and was humble about her kindness. She traveled to Germany and Brazil to care for her ailing sister. Maria attended the Eliot Baptist Church. Her greatest joy in life was her family. Maria loved spend-
ing time with them all; especially trips to the beach with the grandchildren. She also loved the high mountains and going for rides along the Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire. Maria was pre-deceased by her parents and two sisters, Maria Magda Rodriguez and Maria Henia Seifert. She will be sorely missed by her son Andy Wesely and his wife Malinda of Biddeford; daughter Adriana Lord and husband William of South Berwick; sister Maria Jean Jensen and her husband Ed of Englewood, FL; her five precious grandchildren Jenica, Julia, Joshua, Kurt, and Madison; and her sister of the heart, Barbara Crowley, who will miss
her dearly. Services will be held at a later date. Memorial donations in her memory may be sent to the York County Shelter Programs, Inc., 147 Shaker Hill Road, Alfred, ME 04002. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick. Condolences may be expressed at www.johnsonfuneralhomeme.com. • • • • • • • • • •

Hamilton Marine to Open New Location in Kittery KITTERY Hamilton Marine, the popular Maine marine supply store well known to boaters throughout the Northeast, will be opening its sixth marine store location in Kittery. The location is the former site of Jackson’s Hardware and Marine store, whose owners recently retired. “With 100+ years of business in a location rich in history, we are inheriting a loyal customer base,” said Hamilton COO Andrew Blanchard. “Customers in the area have been asking for a Hamilton Marine store for many years and with the closing of Jackson Hardware we felt it was our opportunity to service them.”
Hamilton Marine Inc. has other locations in Searsport, Portland, Rockland, Southwest Harbor, and Jonesport. “Over the next few months we will work on updating the Kittery store to fit our needs and steadily add stock until it’s filled,” said Wayne Hamilton president and owner. Hamilton, a Searsport native, has been on the water most of his life. He lobstered before opening his first store in his Searsport garage in 1977 selling commercial fishing supplies. Shortly afterward he moved to Route 1 and was joined by his (late) wife, Loraine and her siblings. “We’re still family owned and operated,” said Hamilton.
