OGUNQUIT “Ogunquit in Native American means “Beautiful Place by the Sea, and at no time is that more true than during Christmas by the Sea. This annual seaside celebration, brings the town of Ogunquit to life and to light with plenty of holiday cheer. They have shown their dedication this Thanksgiving season by sponsoring ‘Stuff the Turkey’. This fundraising effort asked students to bring in loose change to help support the food pantries in the three towns in their district. This year the Student Council members were proud to have collected over $1,500 because of the generosity of the student body. Berwick, North Berwick and Lebanon food pantries will each receive a donation of over $500 with the hopes that these donations will help their community members be able to enjoy their holiday season. The Student Council members went to all teamrooms each of the four days collecting change. The students were very generous and made collecting that amount of cash easy. The teamroom with the largest donations received 5 large cheese pizzas donated by Bubba Fryes in North Berwick. This year's donations were a record at Noble Middle School.

KITTERY It’s The Nutcracker, but definitely not as we know it! On Friday and Saturday, December 8 and 9, The Bang Group returns to The Dance Hall in Kittery with “Nut/Cracked, their brilliant and hilarious rendition of the classic Nutcracker. They have taken every little girls favorite Christmas show and torn it limb from limb. Mixing Tchaikovsky’s original score with music by Duke Ellington, Glen Miller and others, the company turns the sugar coated ballet into a percussive piece of dance theatre. Expect tap dancing, singing and some unusual pointe shoe activity. Nothing is sacred as “Nut/Cracked twists and melds various dance traditions
into an ode to American eclecticism which honors the power of the human urge to dance while riding Tchaikovsky’s voluptuous waves of rhythm. The Bang Group's mission, based on choreographer David Parker's vision of diverse dance forms united by a common purpose, is to facilitate the creation and performance of Parker's work and to promote, mentor and present the work of artists who embody this vision. Standards of craftsmanship, creative liberty and aesthetic diversity are present in the rehearsal and mentoring process, in the curation of the company's performances and those presented by The Bang See NUT page 31...

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Eliot Artist Gordon Carlisle Exhibits ELIOT Join Eliot artist Gordon Carlisle for an open studio of his artwork on December 8 and 9. After a twenty-seven tenure at Portsmouth’s Button Factory, Carlisle moved into a converted six-car garage in the fall of 2010. This is the first time he has hosted an exhibition of his work there. Carlisle’s wacky collages always made his third floor studio at the Button Factory Open House a popular destination. Known for his humor as well as artistic prowess, his open studio event will showcase a wide variety of artwork, including not only his collages, but oils, acrylics and watercolors as well as his unique, re-purposed Paint-By-Number paintings. All are priced to sell. Just look for the brightly colored sandwich board in front of his house at 111 Fore Road. Gordon Carlisle has been
actively involved as a visual and theatrical artist on the Seacoast since 1982. A graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, Carlisle was a member of Portsmouth's Mural Works for ten years before starting his own mural painting business in 1994. He currently
makes his living as a commissioned muralist, painter and illustrator. In November, he installed his most recent mural within the main entrance of York Hospital. His artwork has been exhibited across the U.S. For more on Carlisle’s public art,
visit gordoncarlisle.com. Gordon Carlisle’s Open Studio runs for two days only: Friday, December 8, 5:30-9 p.m., and Saturday, December 9, 11

Fashion & Radios Displayed KENNEBUNK The Brick Store Museum presents two brand-new exhibitions: The Festival of Style, in which local organizations and individuals selected over 20 pieces of clothing from the Museum’s costume collection; and The Golden Age of Radio, in which two local radio collectors have shared parts of their personal collections of early radios. The exhibitions will be on display through January. The Festival of Style is presented by the Captain Lord Mansion, with additional support from Nvest Financial Group. It features costumes spanning 200 years of local history, and includes pieces selected by local companies Boulangerie, Gorham Savings Bank, Cloth Interiors, and more. Visitors to the exhibit are invited to vote on their favorite entry with a ballot; on December 22, at the Museum’s Holiday Open House, the winning costume will be announced, and one visitor’s ballot will be chosen to win a gift card from local clothier Ramblers Way. The Golden Age of Radio investigates the beginnings of radio in the early 20th Century. The exhibition features early radios and artifacts like Atwater Kent radios, Radiolas, a spark gap transmitter, and more. Visitors to the exhibition will discover how the science of radio waves inspired a nation to develop wide-ranging communication that still exists today. The Brick Store Museum is located ad 117 Main St, Kennebunk. For details: 207-9854802; brickstoremuseum.org.

~ Ask The Computer Lady~ Dear Computer Lady, I use Windows Live Mail. Since I updated to Windows 10, Windows Mail often opens without anyone prompting it to do so. I often close Windows Live Mail and go to search the internet and Windows Live Mail will open even though I closed it a few moments ago. It is very frustrating. I use a Dell Computer. Is there anything I can adjust on the computer to stop this from happening? Thank you, in advance, for any help you can provide. Dorothy Hi Dorothy, Windows Live Mail does not work with Windows 10, I am actually surprised that it is running at all since you upgraded to Windows 10. You will need to move your email to another
program that does work with Windows 10. Your options include some of the following programs: 1. The built in mail app that comes with Windows 10. It is not very powerful, a little bit buggy, but comes free with Windows. 2. Outlook that comes with Microsoft Office. It is very powerful, includes a calendar and contacts. It is included with Office, if you have purchased it. 3. Another email program like Mozilla Thunderbird. It is almost as powerful as Outlook, is free to use, and will not become obsolete with future versions of Windows. Elizabeth Elizabeth, I just wanted to thank you WHOLEHEARTEDLY for a recent article of yours that has helped me with almost a year-

You recently came up with LibreOffice that not only does that, but it’s FREE! Boy-oh-boy, did you ever make my day when I opened that email of yours yesterday! Every time I hit ‘print screen’ the only thing that happens is the page advances upwards. I’ve tried several ways-windows key with the ‘print screen’ key, alt key with it, control key but nothing seems to help. What do you think I
am doing wrong? I am running Windows 7 on a Toshiba laptop. Thank you for your help, Diana Dear Diana, Usually when a key has two functions, you need to hold down the “Function or “FN key to access one of the functions of that key. Some laptops use color coding to identify which action needs the FN key, while others use a symbol like a small box. For example, if your FN key is blue (or has blue lettering) and your End/Print Screen key has “print screen in blue lettering, you would need to hold down the FN key while pressing the End key to activate the print screen command. Another example would be if your FN key has a small box around the letters, your End/Print Screen key would have a box around the words, “Print Screen indicating that you need to hold down the FN key to activate the Print Screen command. Hopefully this will help you, Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Is it ok to shut down a computer by holding in the button on the computer? There is one way to make the power button work for shutting down your computer, and that is to make a change in the computer power settings. If you open the control panel (Right click on the start button if it is not listed in your start menu), click on “Hardware and Sound, then on “Power Options. In the left column, click “Choose What the power buttons do. In the power and sleep button settings section, click the drop down list next to “When I press the power button and select “Shut down. Click the “Save Changes button at the bottom of the window to save your settings. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? ~ News ~ Christmas Readings at White Columns
A Kind Deed Shared by a Reader KENNEBUNK Editor's Comment: At this wonderful season of giving,
KENNEBUNKPORT Christmas Prelude is here, and that means story time for area children at the Kennebunkport Historical Society’s White Columns mansion. This year all of the rooms in the mansion are decorated to the theme of children’s Christmas stories, and children will be guided through them. On the Saturdays of Prelude, December 2 and 9, from 2-4 p.m., children are invited to the White Columns mansion, at 8 Maine St, for readings of popular children’s Christmas stories. There will be guest readers, capped off by readings with Mrs. Claus in the parlor. The event is free for children 2
to 10 years of age, and a photographer will be available for pictures of children with Mrs. Claus.
it is truly special when people do unselfish deeds to help one another. A Weekly Sentinel reader sent the following to us to share: On the windy Sunday following Thanksgiving, my husband and I struggled in the Home Depot parking lot to secure a 4x8 piece of sheetrock to the top of our small Subaru Impreza. A man driving by stopped to help put it on the top. When my husband went into Home Depot to get some tie downs, the wife of the helpful man came back and asked if she and her husband could deliver the sheetrock for us in their truck. We were driving to Kennebunk 9 miles away. They followed us down Rte 1, unloaded the sheetrock and drove back to their home in Arundel.

BUSINESS & FINANCE Maine Home Sales Up 8% Percent in October STATEWIDE Homebuyers across Maine have been active this fall season. Maine Listings announced that sales of single-family existing homes increased by 8.05 percent in October 2017, statewide, compared to October 2016. Prices also jumped 6.49 percent to a median sales price (MSP) of $205,000 comparing October 2017 to October 2016. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. “We’ve been hearing for many months that a shortage of for-sale inventory had hindered the potential for 2017 real estate markets. While the for-sale inventory levels continue to be historically low,
they are increasing, and buyers are now finding options and purchasing the right home for their needs,” says Greg Gosselin, Broker/Owner of Gosselin Realty Group in York and 2017 President of the Maine Association of REALTORS®. “The past four months, including these very strong October numbers have brought us on par with the record-setting 2016. To date in 2017, the number of home sales statewide is just 0.4 percent below last year. Buyers hoping to be settled before winter should provide a strong ending to the year,” added Gosselin. According to the National Association of Realtors, sales of single-family existing homes eased 1.0 percent nationally
comparing October 2017 to October 2016. The national MSP reached $248,300 in October, a 5.4 percent increase. Regionally, sales in the Northeast rose 4.2 percent and the regional MSP jumped 6.6 percent to $272,800 last month. Source: Maine Real Estate Information System, Inc. (d/b/a Maine Listings). Note: Maine Listings, a subsidiary of the Maine Association of REALTORS, is a statewide Multiple Listing Service with over 4,500 licensees inputting active and sold property listing data. NORTH BERWICK Meet Nyla, an absolute beauty that came to ACAR when her young human family added a new baby. Nyla wanted nothing more than to cuddle and love the new member of the family so much, that her loving behavior concerned the new parents, so Nyla had to be re-homed. Nyla is about five-yearsold, loves people and will do well with all adults and older children. She has always been an only kitty and would prefer not to share her attention and loving ways with any other cat. Dogs are an unknown. She is already spayed, vaccinations are current and she has passed her wellness exam. Nyla's wish list is very short: She wants nothing more than one very loving family in time for Christmas. If you are able to provide a loving home for Nyla before the December 25, Nyla would so like to meet with you this week during either Wednesday Open Adoption hours from 4-7 p.m. or on Saturday Open Adoption hours from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at our Adoption Facility, 251 Country Club Rd, Sanford,, or by appointment during the week by calling either Marilyn at 207-490-2855 or Amanda at 603-205-3615. York HS Athletes Raise $2,500 for York Hospital’s Living Well With Cancer Fund YORK If you visited the York High School campus after 2 p.m. from September through November you’d have noticed that every field has been a beehive of activity! And if you spoke with any coaches, you’d know that this fall, the motivated students on those fields and courts weren’t solely dedicated to winning games and meets—field hockey, football, golf, volleyball, cross country or soccer. These kids were also taking time, broadening perspectives and considering how their teams may be able to positively impact those in their community who may not be faring as well. Their efforts came to fruition at the school’s Fall Sports Award Banquet on the evening of November 15, in the form of a much needed and appreciated $2,500 donation to York Hospital’s “Living Well With Cancer Fund. This season, each team was tasked with hosting a game where they decided how they might raise funds for
the “Living Well With Cancer Fund. Many held bake sales for loyal fans or hosted raffles with items donated by local businesses, and others asked teammates to bring gas and grocery gift cards for cancer patients who are unable to work during treatment. “The donated funds are used to improve the quality of life for those diagnosed with, undergoing treatment for and recovering from cancer. Patients may receive services
including exercise and physical rehabilitation, massage and Reiki, emergency funds for gas, food, oil, rent or mortgage when needed, along with assistance with prosthetics and nutritional guidance, offered York Hospital Oncology Social Worker, Susan Kelly-Westman. Ignored, Dismissed, Misdiagnosed: Things Parents Should Know about Traumatic Brain Injury Luke Galloway died at age 22 by suicide, 19 years after being struck on the head by a playground swing. The two events were connected. His mother, Claire, tells his story in a heart-wrenching new book. Here, she reveals eight truths about traumatic brain injury and how it's too often overlooked by those who are supposed to diagnose and treat it. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) can be devastating. When a person suffers a blow to the head—due to sports injury, military combat, a car crash, a fall, a violent attack, or some other accident or event, it can alter his or her brain function and behavior. For some, the change is temporary. For others, it never goes away. And for some, whose injuries
remain unidentified and untreated, it can set off a spiral into depression, substance abuse, criminality, homelessness, or - most tragically of all - suicide. Yet, as dire as TBIs can be, and as common as they are (1.7 million per year, estimates the CDC), there's a shocking lack of knowledge and resources around them. "I know firsthand how lifeshattering unidentified TBIs can be," says Claire Galloway, author of “A Call to Mind: A Story of Undiagnosed Childhood Traumatic Brain Injury (Brandylane Publishers, 2017, ISBN: 978-1939-93094-1, $16.95). "And I also know how ill-equipped our healthcare system, education system, and the public in general are to detect, diagnose, and treat them. This has to change. Our
children deserve better." Galloway's book tells the story of her son, Luke, who suffered a closed-head TBI at a park playground at almost three years old. As she and her husband were spreading out blankets by the pool, they took their eyes off Luke for a few seconds. He darted away and into the descending arc of a child on a hard
plastic swing. It struck him on the head and sent him flying. As Galloway rushed to him, she feared he might be dead. He wasn't. But he was forever changed. "The child who ran away from that blanket never returned to me," she says. "I waited, hoped, and prayed for the next 17 years, but he was like a differ-

As the days went by, Luke's brow never unfurrowed. Suddenly, he was fearful of going to bed. He clenched his fists and shook his arms in what were later (much later) diagnosed as miniseizures. And as he grew up, different symptoms appeared. He complained of noises in his head. He experienced synesthesia. He got "stuck" in thoughts he couldn't move through. He struggled in school (despite his high IQ). He became socially isolated. He began to act out impulsively, and, eventually, depression set in. Throughout his childhood - and despite Galloway's many pleas for help to physicians and teachers and her certainty that her son's problems stemmed from his playground accident, Luke wasn't diagnosed with a brain injury until he was 18-years-old. By then, years of psychological overlay, frustration, and shame had taken their toll. When he finally lost all hope, he bought a gun, put it to the exact area of his head that had suffered the injury, and pulled the trigger. No one ever gets over the death of a child. Yet in the wake of this terrible loss, Galloway has been determined to raise awareness for others about the scope and impact of unidentified TBI, especially closed-head injury. She wants physicians, educators, psychologists, family, friends, and, of course, parents to better recognize how a TBI can manifest so it can be identified and treated as soon as possible. She offers the following insights and advice for parents: Take every bump on the
head seriously. There may be no marks or immediate signs of a problem but that doesn't mean there isn't one. If your child loses consciousness, even briefly, or seems dazed and confused, vomits, or shows unequal dilation of the eyes, seek medical help right away. Also, be aware of any other unusual behavior—for instance, Luke didn't cry, which is not normal for a toddler—and don't try to explain it away. "Teach your child to tell you every time she has a bump on the head," suggests Galloway. "This will alert you to be on the lookout for anything that seems 'off.'" Make sure your child's doctor takes them seriously as well. Many physicians lack a precise protocol for diagnosing head injuries, so parents need to understand what the issues are, says Galloway. If you're seeing worrisome symptoms in your child and your pediatrician doesn't order appropriate testing and follow-up, you may need to seek emergency or urgent care to have your child assessed. "The blow to the head, accompanied by changes in Luke's behavior, should have triggered advice to take him to the ER to determine the nature and extent of the injury," confirms Wayne A. Gordon, PhD, ABPP-CN, Jack Nash Professor and Vice Chair, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, who wrote the foreword to A Call to Mind. Be aware that many TBIs go undiagnosed. Many TBIs remain undiagnosed because physicians don't believe the See INJURY page 30...

Irene (Steere) Butland, 92 NORTH BERWICK – Irene (Steere) Butland, 92, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, November 26, 2017 at the Newton Center in Sanford, where she had resided for the past two years. Born on June 7, 1925, she was the daughter of Maynard and Nelida (Thibeault) Steere and was a life-long resident of North Berwick. She was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Kenneth (known by locals as Bucky) and by her brother, Dexter Steere. She is survived by her four children: Sherry and Alan Weisberg of North Berwick; Jeffrey and Betty Butland of North
Berwick; Glenda and David McChesney of Berwick; and Denise and Jim Libby of Kingman, AZ. Her loving family also includes 9 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. As well as a beloved mother and grandmother, Irene was a friend and mentor to many. She was a faithful member for over 50 years at First Baptist Church where she served as sexton for many years. Her passion for the souls of both children and adults led this quiet, gentle woman to teach Sunday School classes, direct Vacation Bible School, lead ladies neighborhood Bible classes, and teach Good New Clubs. At her request, a private graveside service will be held. A Memorial Service will be celebrated on Saturday, December 9 at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 31 Main Street, North Berwick. Arrangements are entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick. Condolences may be expressed at wwww.johnsonfuneralhomeme.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 729, North Berwick, ME 03906 or Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 US Route one #1, Scarborough, ME 04074.

Eliot United Methodist Church, Route 236, Eliot Blue Christmas Worship Service and Meal held on Sunday, December 10 at 5 p.m. For anyone who has suffered a loss and is struggling this Christmas Season. For many people, the approaching Christmas holiday does not bring with it the joy and happiness that is advertised on television or in greeting cards. This service will reach out to people who feel such burdens and has a more quiet, contemplative feel than a traditional Christmas worship service. Scripture, music and meditations. Everyone in the community is welcome. Immediately following the service there is a free meal provided in the fellowship hall. Candlelight Peace Vigil held on Wednesday, December 13 at 6 p.m. on the front lawn of Eliot United Methodist Church. Vigil will take place the week after Advent service. FMI: www.eliotumc.com: 207-439-6593.
...INJURY from page 22 parent's report of behavioral, emotional, or physical changes in their child. They might not believe what they can't see, or they might initially diagnose a concussion, but then dismiss a parent's observations of lasting changes, assuming the injury has healed. Also, parents may notice changes in their child but don't realize that he fell off the monkey bars at school (or, they realize it but don't connect the strike to the head with the subsequent symptoms). The bottom line? If your child is having unexplainable and confusing symptoms, get her checked out. "For example, one of Luke's symptoms was perseveration, meaning that he would get stuck on a thought or action and could not be redirected," notes Galloway. "This kind of behavior is common with some types of brain injury, but a physician might dismiss it as simply a bratty episode."
Know that brain scans don't always show a TBI. Sometimes, evidence never shows up on a scan. If your child does have a scan after a strike to the head and it appears to be clear, don't take this as proof that nothing is wrong. There are neuropsychological tests that can be administered that provide as much or more information than a scan. "Parents must be incredibly persistent, and doctors and educators open-minded," says Galloway. Woven throughout A Call to Mind is the continual unfolding of unexplained changes in her son. "I shared my observations many times with professionals who should have been trained to know there was a problem, and yet I was ignored again and again." "Luke's episodes of fist clenching were eventually recognized as seizures, yet they were interpreted as fits of rage for years," notes Galloway. "I See TBI page 31...

~ News ~ Maine Classrooms Advance in Samsung’s $2 Million National STEAM Contest STATEWIDE Five Maine classrooms are among the nation’s 255 state finalists in the “Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest, a program that encourages students to solve real-world issues in their community using classroom skills in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). Selected from a pool of nearly 3,000 entries, the five schools (listed below) have been named state finalists. The finalist schools were chosen based on their creative and strategic proposals to solve complicated issues that affect their communities by using STEAM learning. All 255 teachers selected as state finalists will receive one Samsung ChromebookŽ for their classrooms and have the opportunity to advance in the competition for additional prizes and educational opportunities. With $2 million in technology on the line, teachers from the five State Finalist schools will submit an Activ-
ity Plan outlining how students will tackle the local issue using STEAM skills to ultimately improve the greater community. Maine state finalists: Wells High School, Wells, teacher, Chrys Demos; Wells Junior High School, Wells, teacher, Jason Hludik; Sebasticook Valley Middle School, Newport, teacher, Kern Kelley; Sebasticook and Somerset Valley Middle School, Newport, teacher, Keith Kelley; Noble High School, North Berwick, teacher, Yuhong Sun. tional finalist stage. National finalists: 10 national finalists will be selected to attend a Pitch Event where they will pitch their project to a panel of judges. National grand prize winners: 3 national winners will be selected and each will receive a $150,000 Samsung technology package. Community Choice Award: All of the 10 national finalists will be eligible to win an additional $20,000 Samsung technology package based on social media voting. Mr. Winchester's fourth grade students collaborated with Mr. Pollock, Physical Education teacher to view topographic maps of South Berwick’s Powderhouse Hill. Students then hiked to find the summit of Powderhouse Hill and ski area and compared the contour lines, contour intervals, and elevations on their maps with the location they visited. This activity enriches the Foss Science Curriculum on soils, rocks, and landforms taught in fourth grade. ...NUT from page 14 Group at venues throughout the U.S. and Europe. ...TBI from page 30 was even accused by a preschool teacher of being an abusive parent. Luke's agitation during one doctor visit caused him to run wildly around the room, which led to his being labeled a behavior problem. 'You just need to be a better mother,' the doctor told me, despite having been told we were there because Luke had not returned to 'normal' after the playground accident. These problems should have been recognized as physical signs of a brain injury." The effect of TBI might not be immediate.
