Ogunquit Celebrates 30th Annual Christmas by the Sea OGUNQUIT Ogunquit’s Christmas By the Sea weekend takes place Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 9-11. The annual event offers a variety of activities that have become crowd favorites over the years. Some of the events happening this year include: tree lighting, a visit with Santa, kid’s ornament and card making workshop, living manger, concerts, hay rides, story hours, art & craft shows, polar plunge, wine tasting pa-

rades and fireworks! Friday, December 9, the Town Tree Lighting will take place at 8:15 p.m. at Veterans Park. Join in for caroling and warm drinks and cookies. (Weather permitting.) On Saturday, December 10, from 9:30-11 a.m., Santa makes his debut at the Fire Station (School Street). Get there early to see Santa arrive by fire engine. Have a photo taken with Santa and pick it up later at the Ogunquit Camera Shop.

At 11 a.m., visit Taste of the Season at the Dunaway Center, 23 School St, and enjoy a variety of foods from local dining establishments. In the afternoon, the parade, which starts at 3 p.m. from Perkins Cove in Ogunquit, will travel onward to Main Beach. Go Red York County Event to be held at Nonantum Resort KENNEBUNKPORT The 12th Annual Go Red For Women event for York County is scheduled for Wednesday, December 7 at the Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport. This American Heart Association (AHA) event is focused on raising the awareness of cardiovascular diseases and stroke in women as well as educating the attendees on how to prevent these leading health threats.

Maine survivor Monica Salamone will share her story of surviving a major cardiac event shortly after giving birth to her second child. Monica is one of this year’s Maine Go Red Spokeswomen, one of six women selected to represent the Go Red For Women campaign throughout Maine. Eric Andrews, Chief Banking Officer at Gorham Savings Bank, is the 2016 Event Chairman and has a goal to raise $50,000 and to have 160 attendees at this event. Registration and the silent auction will begin at 4:30 p.m. with educational break-out sessions starting at

5:15 p.m. The dinner and live auction will take place later that evening starting at 6:15 p.m. The 2016 Crystal Heart Honoree is Patsy Aprile, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Southern Maine Health Care. She is a senior healthcare leader who works collaboratively with physicians, staff at all levels and boards of trustees to achieve health care objectives for the York County community. Aprile currently serves on the Board of Directors for Home Health Visiting Nurses and the Board of Directors for Allied Health Resources. She has dedicated her volunteer

31st Annual Christmas Parade is on the March WELLS The Wells Chamber of Commerce announces the 31st Annual Christmas Parade scheduled for Sunday, December 11. The parade steps off at 2 p.m. from the Wells Plaza and proceeds north on Route 1 to the Wells Junior High School. The theme is “Christmas Fun for Everyone�. The Grand Marshal this year is Diana Abbott, a wellknown figure in Wells and the surrounding towns. Diana was an Elementary School teacher from 1962 to 1988. Throughout her career she was actively in-

volved in boards and committees including the York County Child Abuse and Neglect Council, the Senior Center at Lower Village, the Historical Society of Wells &

Ogunquit, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging and the Wells & Ogunquit Outreach Committee. She is currently a volunteer Storyteller at the Wells Public

Library, Ogunquit Memorial Library and the Elementary Schools in Wells, Kennebunkport and Kennebunk. York Hospital in Wells will be serving hot cocoa and cookies in front of the Junior High School gymnasium at the conclusion of the parade . Families, youth groups, civic groups, businesses and individuals are cordially invited. There is no charge to participate. “Portsmouth Naval Shipyard plays a critical role in the defense of our country, and it’s important that the shipyard has the tools and infrastructure needed to continue in that mission,� said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “We applaud Cianbro for securing this competitive contract from the Navy and expect that their work on repairs will provide valuable support to the daily operations at PNSY.� This competitively-awarded contract will support repairs and modernization of pile supported open wharf structures at PSNY’s Berth 11. The project aims to restore the load carrying capacity of the crane rail system on the shipyard’s waterfront, while providing corrosion protection to the wharf. The work is expected to be completed by March 2019. Cianbro is a construction and construction services company based in Pittsfield. Kennebunk Free Library Tail Waggin’ Tutor Jack, a Tail Waggin’ Tutor, returns to the library on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 10-11 a.m. to listen to children read. World War II Soldier’s Memorabilia on Display at Library SOUTH BERWICK In time to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the war memorabilia and letters home of a World War II soldier are part of an Old Berwick Historical Society display at South Berwick Public Library.

We did not know until a few months ago that this Election would be the most unprecedented in modern history. We spent these last months preparing for chaos and confusion. To our delight, the day went remarkably smoothly. We are happy to say that all the talk about coming together as a Nation; actually happened in Wells. For those of you who may have felt like you were not important, it's just not true. Each and every one of

Stone has written a biography about his father, Dr. Frederic Stone who gave 30 years of active and reserve duty to his country as a pilot and surgeon. He served in two wars, assisted on three Apollo missions, flew an F-111 and served two years in Africa as a volunteer medical doctor. Through this long and active life (he passed away at age 91 in 2014) he maintained his sense of humor and faith. Son and author, Dr. Judson I Stone served as the pastor of the Cape Neddick Baptist Church from 1993-2005.

The new exhibit coincides with the library’s book discussion of “Ice Cream, Gas Masks and God� by Joyce Lovely, who will speak about her time growing up in England during World War II. The program will take place on Pearl Harbor Day, Wednesday, December 7, at 7 p.m. Pelletier, who grew up on what is now often called lower Main Street, and attended St. Michael’s Church decades before the building became the library in 2013, entered the Army in 1943. He was one of two sons to do so in his family of nine children raised by their mother, Clementine, after their father, Henry, died of pneumonia. After basic training in 1943 and 1944, Pelletier was about to be sent to Europe for the D-Day invasion when he was singled out for his fluent French language ability and sent to the South Pacific for over 17 months. Six months before Pelletier enlisted, his wife, Jeannette, had given birth to a daughter, Elaine. The couple exchanged letters every day of his almost three-year absence. Jeannette

worked in General Electric and other factory jobs while living in Berwick, caring for Elaine and, like so many young wives, waiting for her husband’s return. In the Foreign Service Association Pacific Theater, Pelletier became interpreter for the large Allied base on the French island of New Caledonia, where he was a member of the 208th Army military police and attained the rank of sergeant. After the war, the Pelletiers settled in Berwick and raised Elaine and her younger brother, Norman. WildrÊ worked many years at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and died in the 1986, and Jeannette in 1999. Over 500 letters and other memorabilia have been donated to the archives of the historical society’s Counting House

“A Christmas Carol� on Stage at Wells High School

WELLS The drama club at Wells High School will present Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol� in the school’s new performing arts center, through December 3. Dates, times and ticket prices for this show are as follows: Friday, December 2 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, December 3 at 1 p.m. (students and senior citizens $5, adults $8). “A Christmas Carol� is based on the classic, haunting tale by 19th century English author Charles Dickens. It was adapted for the Wells stage by

Director Andrew Lopez and produced by Jay Audet. About 30 students are part of the production of this first play to be presented in the new venue. “My adaptation of A Christmas Carol is the original novel, adapted for the stage,� commented Lopez. “Other than one scene written by myself, all dialogue is verbatim. I created a five-character Greek Chorus to deliver narration that I considered essential. It is a dark show, full of music, dance, and special effects.� Indeed the Olenn Perform-

ing Arts Center is now capable of wonderful special effects with state of the art sound and lighting technology. This new venue with a balcony can seat an audience of about 440. In addition, this play introduces David Littlefield as assistant director for this and future plays at WHS. Littlefield is a 2010 graduate of Wells High School and a 2014 graduate of Burlington College in Vermont where he majored in video production. He is currently a substitute teacher in the Wells-Ogunquit CSD and owner of the video production company, David Littlefield Productions.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Merry TubaChristmas, A Free Concert at Nonantum Resort KENNEBUNKPORT The Nonantum Resort, will celebrate the 43rd annual Merry TubaChristmas at a special free holiday concert Sunday, December 4 on 95 Ocean Avenue at 3 p.m. The historic Merry TubaChristmas event was created by musician Harvey Phillips and debuted in 1974 at New York City’s Rockefeller Center to highlight the warm, rich music of tuba and euphonium players at Christmastime, and also to honor the late great tubist William J. Bell. Since that time, spontaneous community ensembles of local musicians of all ages gather to play traditional Christmas carols together. The unique concerts have been showcased in more than 290 citiies nationally and worldwide. This will be the first time this proud brass tradition will be featured in Kennebunkport.

Holiday Artisan Workshop

This musical event has special significance to Nonantum Innkeeper Jean Ginn Marvin, who is an accomplished tubist and euphonium player along with her husband Bob. “Nothing says Christmas like Merry TubaChristmas,” Marvin said. “My family and I have thoroughly enjoyed playing in these concerts over the years. BUSINESS & FINANCE REALTORS® Raise $30,000 at Scholarship Auction ELIOT The York County Council of REALTORS® recently hosted its annual scholarship auction at the Regatta Banquet Center in Eliot, Maine. Nearly 150 Maine and NH real estate agents, affiliates and guests were in attendance and $30,000 was raised. This annual event raises money through cash donations, sponsorships, a live and silent auction, raffles and games. The funds are then distributed among qualifying York County high school seniors for their continuing education after graduation. Last year, eight $2,500 scholarships were awarded, including three York County Community College recipients. As a result of the successful evening, the organization will be awarding even more next spring. The York County Council of REALTORS® has been providing scholarships to high school seniors for over 15 years and to date has raised nearly $180,000. They have given away 90 scholarships, not including what will be awarded in 2017. "It's important that we give something back to the communities our industry serves. We care about the future generation of profes-

sionals, vocational tradesmen and women and of course home ownership opportunities. It's a win-win and if we can provide students with some financial help to make their first year a little easier, we are eager to do so," Lori Barrett, Committee Chairperson said. According to the National Restaurant Association, seven in 10 consumers say their favorite restaurant foods provide flavors they cannot easily duplicate at home. Perhaps that’s one reason why nine in 10 consumers say they enjoy going out to restaurants. While few would likely be shocked to learn that so many people enjoy dining, the types of restaurants consumers prefer reflects a trend that might not have been so important as recently as a decade ago. The National Restaurant Association notes that 68 percent of consumers surveyed for the organization’s 2016 Pocket Factbook are more likely to visit a restaurant that offers locally produced food items. Locally produced foods not only support the local economy, but also tend to be more eco-friendly, as fewer natural resources must be used up to get them from the farm to the dinner table. That preference for eco-friendly food might also explain why 60 percent of consumers are more likely to choose restaurants that offer eco-friendly foods than establishments that provide no such offerings.

It’s decision time for the 55 million Americans covered by Medicare. Open enrollment, when people can enroll in Medicare or make changes to their plans, runs every year now through December 7. But anyone who thinks that signing up for the medical plan for seniors is simple could be in for a rude awakening – and a costly one. “People need to realize that enrolling in Medicare can be complicated,� says Chris Orestis, a senior-care advocate and author of the books “Help on the Way� and “A Survival Guide to Aging.� “If you don’t pay attention you can end up missing needed coverage or paying more out-ofpocket expenses in premiums, co-pays and deductibles than you realize–or can afford.� This year open enrollment comes during a presidential

transition and a time when there are concerns about Medicare’s long-term future and whether it can remain solvent. But any future political decisions about Medicare can seem far off to anyone whose main concern is figuring out how they fit into what’s offered right now, says Orestis, CEO of Life Care Funding. My favorite local backup program is Acronis True Image. The reason I like is because Acronis has all kinds of options for backing up. Using Acronis, you can set backup size limits, or limit the number of older backups you want to keep. You can make a full backup image of your hard drive (if you have space) or just select

the files and folders you want to backup. You can set more than one backup plan to run automatically, you can even backup to more than one location. No matter what kind of backup you choose, you can always use Acronis to recover any or all of the files and folders in the backup. You can also export the picture to a folder of recently updated photos, then use that folder to upload your pictures to Etsy. Adele Frances Chesley Fyfe, 97 YORK – Adele Frances Chesley Fyfe, 97, of York, a former Auburn resident, died Friday, November 18, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. She was a loving wife, mother, nana and great nana. She was born in Lewiston on Oct. 15, 1919, the daughter of the late Earle and Edith (Estes) Chesley. In 1937 she graduated as salutatorian at Edward Little High School in Auburn. Adele went on to further her education at Simmons College in Boston where she was senior class secretary and a graduate in the School of Business and secretarial studies in 1941. Adele’s interests included crossword puzzles, bowling and traveling. On Jan. 12, 1944, she married Gordon F. Fyfe, who died in 1965. She is survived by her son, Gregory C. Fyfe, and his wife, Marilyn L. Fyfe of York; one sister, Dorothy Kerr of Auburn; three grandchildren, Douglas Fyfe and his wife, Amanda, Suzanne Camire and her husband, David, and Laura Fleming and her husband, Brian, all of Massachusetts; seven great-grandchildren, Lily, Stella and Amelia Fyfe, Tia and Teddy Camire, Miles and Nolan Fleming. She was predeceased by a son, Gordon F. Fyfe Jr., in 1998; a brother, Earle M. Chesley Jr., in 2004; and greatgranddaughter, Celia Grace Fyfe, in 2003. The family is grateful for years of loving care at Sanctuary Care in Rye, NH, for Adele. Online condolences and sharing of memories may be expressed at www.lynchbrothers.com. WELLS – Roger Mark Draheim, of Sanford Road, Wells, passed away at the age of 69 in Massachusetts General Hospital on November 20, 2016. Roger was born in Milford, MA on March 8, 1947 and grew up in Wrentham, MA as one of three children. He married his beloved wife Carol Marie Zabchuk in 1975. After relocating to Maine, he started a family and was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He spent his free time woodworking; however, his main focus always remained as his family. Roger was pre-deceased by his brother Steven Russell Draheim. He is survived by his brother, Peter Russell Draheim of Wrentham, MA. He is also survived by his wife, Carol Marie Draheim and their two children, Roger Russell Draheim of Portsmouth, England and Matthew Mark Draheim; Daughter-in-law Hyemi Yun Draheim and grandchildren Noah Matthew Draheim, Harper Grace Draheim and Finley Choe Draheim all of Wells, Maine. Joseph and Juliette (Paradis) Chamberland. After graduating high School, Celine went on to earn her nursing degree and worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Nashua, NH. In 1960, Celine married Roger T. O’Neil. Together they owned and operated Home Fashions and locally they owned and operated Cannon Sheets and Towels in Wells. Celine loved doting on her children and grandchildren. She was a fantastic cook and loved hosting holiday meals with her family. She was known for her generosity and enjoyed knitting and Bingo. She also enjoyed a good political discussion. Celine is lovingly remembered by her husband, Roger; her daughter, Jill Marie O’Neil of Sanford; her sons Mark J. O’Neil and his wife, Cheryl, of Windham, NH and Michael F. O’Neil of Portsmouth, NH; her ex daughter in law, Theresa McGuinness, whom Celine loved like a daughter; her grandchildren, Mikala, Kelsey, Courtney and Taylor; her cousins, Dorothy and Richard Sletterink of Nashua, NH; and many nieces and nephews in the Biddeford-Saco area. A memorial service was held on Saturday, November 26, followed by interment at Ocean View Cemetery in Wells. St. David’s Calls New Rector KENNEBUNK St. David's Episcopal Church of Kennebunk announces the calling of a new rector, The Rev. Andrew D'Angio White. He will begin celebrating services and preaching on Sunday, December 4. The Rev. D’Angio White comes to Kennebunk from Newark, NY where he was the rector for the Northeast Partners in Episcopal Ministry, a cluster of three congregations that share clergy leadership. Prior to that position, he worked on a Navajo reservation and served as an assistant to the rector in Alexandria, VA. He was educated at Haverford College and Virginia Theological Seminary. The Rev. D’Angio White, his wife Sara and their two young children, Maggie and Charlie, will move to Kennebunk at the end of November. While he begins serving as rector in December, The Rev. D’Angio White's formal installation by the Episcopal Diocese of Maine will take place at a later date. The members of St. David's welcome The Rev. YORK Buddy is a big bundle of love. This gentle giant was taken in a few years ago by a very kind, cat loving woman. He was being beat up by another cat in the area and would run to her deck for safety. When she finally got him indoors, he became her lap cat instantly, and for two years he was happy living the way a cat should. Sadly, his kind savior passed away and Buddy is, once again, in need of a home with a loving companion. While out on his own, getting attacked by other cats, Buddy contracted FIV. Cats with FIV or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus can live long, healthy lives like most other cats. FIV can make them more susceptible to other viruses such as upper respiratory so prompt treatment of initial signs of illness is best. Buddy is neutered and up to date on vaccinations.

SPORTS Warriors ‘Meet and Greet’ with Elementary Students before Big Game WELLS On Friday, November 18, a day before the Class C State Football Championship game between the teams of Wells High School and Mount Desert Island, the Warriors took time for a morning visit with students at Wells Elementary School. “This was an amazing thing for our children, commented WES teacher and PTSA co-president Pam Lear. “Their (the students) look of awe was amazing.” With music playing over the intercom, students, many holding signs, lined the hallways to greet and cheer the

players. Both teachers and students received red Warrior towels to bring to Saturday’s game at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland. As it turned out for Wells, the Warriors were victorious over MDI with a score of 44 to 0 making this the Warriors’ third state championship win. “It was so special for the players to share their time with us,” commented Lear about Friday’s visit. “Our children loved it! Making a connection between the younger students and our older role models is so important. These kiddos will remember this”.

Girls’ Soccer EIL Tournament & Season Recap Sunday, Nov 27 Berwick 2, Concord 0 The Bulldogs took on the number number two seed Concord in the Eastern Independent League Tournament and after an exciting 1-1 draw in regulation the Bulldogs advanced after a penalty kick shoot out to play Pingree in the finals for the second year in a row. The Bulldogs played the eventual NEPSAC Class B Champions Pingree tight until the closing minutes when Pingree got the insurance goal to make it a 2-0 win for their second EIL Tournament title in 2 years. Caroline Starr (Rye, NH) had the lone Bulldog goal in the semifinals vs Concord and finished the season second on the team in scoring with 11 goals and 4 assists and was named an EIL All League Player.Christine Gardella (Haverhill, MA) had the Bulldogs best chances to equalize vs Pingree in the finals and finished the season with 11 goals and 2 assists and was named an EIL All League HM Player and NEPSAC All Star. Kenza Farid (Hampton, NH) anchored a Berwick defense that allowed only 1.28 goals per game, an impressive statistic given the season ending injury to goalkeeper Sam Montagno (Exeter, NH) 1/2 way through the season, forced Farid to step up big in her defensive duties. From her defensive role Kenza also had an impressive 5 goals and 4 assists and was named an EIL All League Player and NEPSAC All Star. Tess Varley (Portsmouth, NH) played key roles in the midfield and defense and was named an EIL All League HM Player. Her individual defense in the last three games of the season was top notch shutting down numerous dangerous attacking players, with key plays and tough tackles. Two freshmen had standout seasons for the Bulldogs. Aaliyah Farid (Hampton, NH) lead the team in scoring, assists, and points with an impressive 12 goals and 9 assists. Rayne Zimmermann (Exeter, NH) was the recipient of the Coaches Award for stepping up to play goalie when Montagno was injured and putting the team's

needs ahead of her own. She had many big saves even saving the 7th penalty kick in the EIL shootout that got the Bulldogs to the finals. She still managed an impressive 6 goals and 5 assists despite playing defense and goalkeeper for most of the season. Senior Captains Christie Sullivan (Stratham, NH) and Annie Vatcher (Kennebunk, ME) were amazing leaders for a team that earned a historic 12 wins and scored 52 goals (both records over the last 15+ years). Sullivan was an EIL All League Player and Vatcher was name the Team's Most Valuable Player. The Bulldogs finished the season 12-5-1 just narrowly missing a NEPSAC tournament birth in a very competitive field where Marianapolis who narrowly beat the Bulldogs 2-1 during the regular season knocked off defending Champion Brewster Academy (3-2) in the first round and Kimball Union Academy took the Championship for 2016 with wins over Rye Country Day (3-2) MacDuffie (2-1) and Marianapolis in the finals (1-0).

York High School Boys Hockey Team to Host Eighth Annual Toy Drive YORK The York High School boys hockey team will be hosting the eighth holiday Toys for Tots gift drive on Monday, December 5, at their game against St. Thomas Aquinas at Jackson's Landing in Durham, NH. Fans are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy with them to the game to drop off. Toys for Tots will distribute them to local families in York in time for the upcoming holiday season. Mel Bates, the southern Maine coordinator for Toys for Tots said, “We really appreciate the York Wildcats getting involved each year. Our community toy drives were able to provide toys to more than two hundred families in the York Area last year. We are hoping to exceed last year’s collection and the need is even greater this year.” This will be the official

debut for the 2016-2017 Wildcat Season. Coach Jim Powers said, “York High School hockey players have a very long record of participating in charitable events. Being part of Toys for Tots is personal to them. They can all remember getting their first pair of skates or their first stick. That magic is still in them. When they pass it on to someone else it lights up all over again. This kind of sharing is the best there is.” Game time is 3:30 p.m. Gift card donations for older kids are also appreciated. Everyone who brings a toy donation will receive an entry into a raffle for two Red Sox tickets to a home game at Fenway during the 2017 Season.
