Dynamic Speaker Coming Home and Creating Stronger Communities
KENNEBUNKPORT – Last year Houston Kraft left Kennebunk High School and the Middle School of the Kennebunks with a standing ovation and a no less than enthusiastic staff. Due to the amazing impact Houston had on the students of the middle and high schools, Trust in Education of the Kennebunkport Conserva-
tion Trust, and the RSU 21 Positive Climate Committee paired up to bring him back, with a twist. This year he’s bringing his message to more than just MSK and KHS, the community will have the opportunity to see what all the fuss is about. Though on the national circuit speaking to thousands of students every year, Houston

has roots in the Kennebunks and is thrilled to bring his message back here. As his literature reminds us, his is not a message, but a movement. A movement to bring about action, rooted in kindness, compassion and love. This goal to “inspire a passion for people and a commitment to community is a lofty one, but this dynamic speaker seems to light a fire in the hearts of those he speaks to. Having been involved in student leadership for over 10 years and speaking professionally for over 5, Houston is successful at helping to create a culture of compassion in schools, where those attributes may not
be the first course of action. His dedication to teaching our youth and communities at large how to be compassionate, selfless and loving people is palatable in his presentations. He has created short movies and an app to carry the message on after he leaves, and helps to train kids to think with empathy and care. In a time when there is so much turmoil and negativity, this message of hope and resilience is important. Come hear this self-proclaimed “professional hugger and start the movement to “choose love. Houston Kraft's Schedule of events spans from Wednesday, Decmber 2 – Friday, De-

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5744 will gather with historical society members to commemorate the attack on Pearl Harbor and dedicate a new flagpole by the bridge between Maine and New Hampshire on Route 4. It replaces a pole the society has maintained since the 1960s. “The community rallied round the flagpole, said Patricia Laska, the society’s president, noting the success of fall fundraising events, a grant application, and an appeal to members, supporters and the veterans’ group. In all, over $12,000 was raised for the flagpole as well as new museum signs, building repairs and local history programs.

~ News ~ Being Thankful and Thinking of Others at WES WELLS On November 24th, a couple of days before Thanksgiving, two fourth grade classes at Wells Elementary School (WES) gathered together in a common area to participate in the annual “Gobble Up Party, a pre-Thanksgiving event which included a pie festival. Students of Pam Lear and Donna Longley had a wide variety of pies made by parent volunteers to select a slice from. Before digging into the afternoon’s dessert treat, numerous students mentioned what they were most thankful for including their family, friends, teachers, house and food. Earlier in the week, these fourth graders made Thanksgiving-themed nameplates and turkey decorations to later take home. Students also brought home small loaves of bread made by them and baked by kitchen staff. These loaves had been placed in small baking tins, wrapped and decorated with ribbons on top. These banana, apple and lemon breads were for them to give to someone in the spirit of Thanksgiving. Later, in Longley’s classroom, there was a further break from studies to hear the story, Twas The Night Before Thanksgiving by Dave Pilkey. “It’s one of our many opportunities to give thanks, commented Lear who added that this is a special time for the children to slow down enough to be thankful and think of others in what can be a “busy time of the year. For this year’s preThanksgiving party, teachers Lear and Longley would like to thank all the parent volunteers who made pies plus school volunteers Sheila Gabrielli and Kitty Sprout, interns Tania Riegelman and Trevor Hopwood, and Mirna Davila for their help preparing for this event.

Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night KENNEBUNK/ KENNEBUNKPORT A group of about a dozen ShakeStars from Kennebunk and Biddeford are self-producing an abridged version of Twelfth Night. This entire production is being done by the kids - abridging the play, casting, costuming, building sets, locating rehearsal space, directing - even working with local businesses to use as venues for the show. All of this is being done by a very dedicated and passionate group of ShakeStars who want to be sure that MaineStage Shakespeare comes back in 2016. There are two shows
scheduled before Christmas: Monday, December 7 at 6 p.m. at the Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport and Sunday, December 13 at 4 p.m. at Wallingford Farm on Route 1, South in Kennebunk. Admission will be ‘Pay What You Can’ with all proceeds being donated to MaineStage Shakespeare. We are especially grateful to the folks at the Nonantum and Wallingford Farm for hosting these shows. The ShakeStars have done a fantastic job with this show. CMP Offers Holiday Lighting Safety and Efficiency Tips STATEWIDE – Central Maine Power Company (CMP) is urging customers to follow some simple electrical safety and energy-saving tips so they can have a safe and enjoyable holiday season. In addition to testing smoke detectors and planning emergency fire escape routes for your family, people should keep the following safety tips in mind: Safety: The combination of dried Christmas tree limbs and hot lights can be dangerous, so if you have a live tree, be sure to keep it fresh. Before you put the tree in its stand, cut its base at a 45-degree angle so it can absorb water. Water the tree liberally — the average tree can consume between a quart and a gallon of water a day. Remove the tree promptly after the holiday or when it becomes dry. See SAFETY page 21...

Health & Fitness ...SAFETY from page 20 Decorate the tree with miniature lights. They produce much less heat and reduce the drying effect on the tree. Only use lights and cords that have been factory tested. Check for the UL label on the packaging. Carefully inspect light cords, plugs and receptacles for worn or frayed insulation and loose connections. Throw away damaged items. Don’t overload electrical circuits or extension cords. Follow the directions on cord labels regarding connecting lights strings and extension cords. Make sure the cords are out of the way so that nobody trips over them.
Keep flammable decorations away from the tree's lights. Also make sure that electric window candles do not touch drapes or other flammable objects. Keep wires away from toddlers. Push wires toward the center of the tree, and clip them securely to the branches. Never use electric lights on metallic trees. Avoid using plastic trees unless they’re flame resistant. Always turn holiday lights off before going to sleep and when you leave home. For outside use, use only outdoor-approved lights that can withstand cold temperatures. While decorating the outside of your home, never raise ladders, poles or other extended objects into or near power lines. If
you are decorating an outside tree, check to make sure that its limbs aren’t near power lines. Remember that no power line is safe to touch, ever. Replace the batteries in your smoke detectors. Energy Efficiency: LED lights are highly efficient and use a small fraction of the energy of an incandescent bulb to produce the same amount of light. For example, the amount of electricity consumed by just one 7-watt incandescent bulb could power 140 LEDs (two 24-foot strings). Use a programmable timer to turn lighting displays on and off; unplug lights when you leave home or go to bed. Turn decorations on only after dark. FMI: www.cmpco.com.

left) and Little Man (right above): Dear Santa, If you can find room in your bag of gifts for me and Little Man, we would love a real home for the two of us to live in for the rest of our lives. We’ve bounced around too much already, and we’re ready for someone to love us forever. Safe Haven will even pay the vet bills for my thyroid checkups and medicine, which is easy to give me. Just a dab in my ear twice a day, and I never make a fuss! Little Man needs no medicine.
Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK – Home for the Holidays! We have one wish for the holidays here at Animal Welfare Society – that each and every shelter pet will find his new home before the end of the
year. From now through New Year’s, every time a pet is adopted, his new family will go home with one of our commemorative “Home for the Holidays t-shirts. Help us find a new home for all our pets!
We’re older, and many people only want young kitties, so it’s hard for us to get noticed. I sit and wait at the door every time someone visits the shelter, but no one has fallen in love with us yet. But Santa, we know you work magic. So please make a miracle happen for us. Thank you, Santa! Love, Mooglie (and Little Man)
Calendar: Saurday, December 5 Join us from noon to 3 p.m. for our annual Holiday Open House at the shelter on Holland Road in Kennebunk. We’ll have ornaments to hang on our trees, handmade presents for sale, crafts for the kiddos, and holiday treats. Animal Welfare Society alumni receive a gift from Santa! Social Security Helps America Plan for Retirement Today, the Retirement Security Project at the Brookings Institution hosted an event with the Social Security Administration and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Carolyn W. Colvin, Acting Commissioner of Social Security, joined Richard Cordray, CFPB Director, to give keynote remarks about helping people plan for retirement. Social Security presented retirement planning tools available at my Social Security, a secure, online hub for doing business with the agency. More than 21 million people have created a personal online account. Approximately 168 million workers pay toward Social
Security coverage through taxes on their earnings—and almost 60 million people receive monthly Social Security benefits. Around two-thirds, or 40 million of these beneficiaries, are retired workers or their dependents. However, many workers paying into Social Security know little about how the system works, or what they need to do on their own to be ready for retirement. “We are so pleased to partner with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Brookings Institution to help Americans plan for retirement, said Acting Commissioner Colvin. “Because we’re living longer, healthier lives, we can expect to spend more time
in retirement than our parents and grandparents did. Creating a sound retirement plan is vitally important. Social Security provides secure online services for our customers—including the my Social Security suite of services, the Retirement Estimator, and the online retirement application. A panel discussion on efforts to improve retirement planning included guests Jonnelle Marte, financial reporter with The Washington Post, Olivia S. Mitchell, International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans Professor at the Wharton School
at the University of Pennsylvania, and Jean Setzfand, Senior Vice President of Programs at AARP. To learn more about re-
tirement planning tools available through my Social Security and to create an account, visit www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount.

...EQUIPMENT from page 28 taining ethanol can potentially stale over time. To be safe, try to avoid purchasing more than what you’ll need for thirty days. Tip #2: Properly Dispose of Leftover Fuel. Whether left in the tank of your equipment or in a gas can on the shelf, it’s easy to forget how old your fuel is. Take note of when you purchased the fuel and properly dispose of it after a month. Tip #3: Run the tank dry or drain unused fuel out of the equipment you are storing. A safe and easy way to dispose of fuel is to run the engine until the tank is empty. You can also add fuel stabilizer to the gas,
run the engine so it circulates throughout the system, and then safely drain the tank. This step ensures that any residual fuel remaining in the equipment after the tank has drained is treated. Get more information on proper fueling at www.LookBeforeYouPump.com. Dear Computer Lady, I really enjoy your newsletter and hope you can help me. I have been using Picasa for years to edit photos and then post on a listing to Etsy and a couple of other online stores. It has been very easy to use. Now, all of a sudden my unedited photos are showing up on Etsy instead of the edited photos. Picasa does not seem to have a help desk and their user forum has tried to help but so far nothing works. Do you have any ideas? Failing that, can you recommend another photo hosting site that is not too complicated? I am not very tech savvy. Thanks! Barbara Dear Barbara, Since I have not been able to observe your process when editing photos, I can only guess at what is going wrong. Here
~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ are a few things to check: 1. Are you clicking the "Apply" button after editing your photos? 2. It appears that Picasa only saves some of the changes in the program unless you resave the file. Once you are done making your changes, click on "File" and "Save As" and save a copy of your picture. Upload the new copy to your Etsy listing. 3. You can also export the picture to a folder of recently updated photos, then use that folder to upload your pictures to Etsy. Just click, "File", then, "Export Picture To Folder." Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, My Start Menu used to be across the bottom of my front page. For some reason, recently it now shows up top to bottom on the right side of my screen. Can you please tell me how to get it to run at the BOTTOM

of the page, instead of the right side of my page? Thank you in advance for helping me get my front page looking like it used to. Sincerely, Carol Dear Carol, Normally, your taskbar is on the bottom of your desktop, but you can customize it to be on any side of the screen. You can move the taskbar by dragging it to any side of your desktop, but an easier way is to follow these directions: 1. Right-click on a blank spot on the taskbar. 2. Click on "Properties" in the context menu. 3. In the Taskbar and Navigation Properties window, make sure the "Taskbar" tab is selected. 4. Find the dropdown list for "Taskbar location on screen: and select your desired position (bottom, left, right, or top). 5. Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the dialog box to save your changes and close the dialog box. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I had Picasa on an XP computer. On new computer we

use MS 7-Pro. In transferring XP personal stuff, I am told it doesn't transfer programs; you have to install or download in the new system. Correct? Every time I try to down load Picasa, to manage my pictures, Malware finds problems and has quarantined the problems, but my husband doesn't feel it is safe to use. I don't know what I can do to have more control over managing my pictures. Does this mean the program itself is infected or is the problem something that can be isolated so I can still use it? HELP! Ruth in MN Dear Ruth, You are correct that you can't transfer your programs from one computer to the next, but you can install programs like Picasa on the new computer. I can only guess that your malware program is flagging Picasa because you are trying to download it from a site that has packaged some advertising software in with Picasa. Instead, you want to make sure you are downloading it from https://picasa. google.com/ This is the official site for Picasa. If you are still having problems, you might want to bring your computer in to my shop so I can install the programs for you without any malware sneaking into your system. Elizabeth
Dear Computer Lady, Thanks so much for your newsletters. My question is I took a video on my iPad of a friends 80th birthday - how do I made a DVD of it for her? The photos have been no problem it's its just the video please help. Diana Dear Diana, It sounds like you need a program for creating DVDs. Photos are fairly easy to put on a disk that can be read by your DVD player, or any computer, all you have to do is burn the photos on a disk. DVD videos, on the other hand, need to be converted to a format that can be used by DVD players. If you just burn the video file to a DVD disk without converting, you will only be able to play the video on your computer. To do this, use a program like Roxio My DVD Video Lab. It allows you to take the video you made, edit it, and then share it on DVD or even on social media sites like facebook. You can check it out at:www.Roxio. com. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. Come browse her articles, watch instructional videos, ask questions, and view comments at www.askthecomputerlady. com/questions.
