Christmas by the Sea Reimagined! OGUNQUIT The Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce proudly welcomes the public to celebrate the sights and sounds of the season with Christmas by the Sea, December 11-13. But like everything else, this year’s celebration had to be reimagined to follow statemandated guidelines but also (thankfully!) carefully managed and produced to provide a variety of fun and safe activities for the whole family. The schedule of events include:
Wells Parade “Reversed” WELLS The Wells Chamber of Commerce will host its Annual Christmas Parade but due to COVID-19, the 2020 version will be a “reverse” parade where spectators will drive their own cars past floats and parade participants lined up along the road. The event venue will take place Sunday, December 13 at Wells Harbor Park, 331 Harbor
Road in Wells, 2-3 p.m. Participants and spectators will be advised that they must wear face coverings and the participants need to adhere to CDC protocols and safe social distancing practices. For more information, call the Wells Chamber of Commerce at 207-646-2451 or visit www. wellschristmasparade.com.(Image of Congdon’s float in 2009)
December 11
Virtual Tree Lighting at 6:30 p.m. Follow the Chamber’s “Beautiful Place by the Sea” Facebook page and watch the event virtually as we light up the tree in Veteran’s Park.
December 12
Drive-thru Santa Adventures: First stop - Bangor Savings Bank, 12:30-2:30 p.m. Spectators remain safely in their vehicles and “drive thru” to be greeted by Santa and his elves with special giveaways for every child who comes to visit; Second Stop - Letters to Santa via Perkins Cove Sail Mail Express, 12:30-3 p.m. Drop off letters to Santa in the special mail box located in Rotary Park where you will be greeted with some sweet treats courtesy of Perkins Cove Candies. The Perkins Cove Sail Mail Express will make sure your letters get delivered to the big guy before Christmas!
A Christmas Carol: Dinner with Dickens at Clay Hill Farm, 1 p.m. A one-man dramatic reading of Charles Dickens’ beloved classic starring Kirk Simpson. Ogunquit Ocean Rescue Polar Plunge at Main Beach, 4 p.m. (see image above!). Come support Toys for Tots (www.toysfortots. org) and cheer on the Ogunquit Ocean Rescue Service as they brave the wintry elements. Please bring unwrapped toys, donations, and plenty of good cheer! There
will be an extreme low tide this day offering plenty of room for people to socially distance and enjoy the event. Cozy up at Goods on Shore Rd. Join us around the fire pit and warm up with a cozy blanket. Sip on some hot cocoa and apple cider. Plus, a pop-up donut shop!

OGUNQUIT The Maine Make-A-Wish foundation is one that is near and dear to the hearts of the staff at Old Village Inn, 250 Main St., Ogunquit. In fact, the establishment and it’s supporters have raised over $150,000 over the past 11 years for Make-A-Wish! Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s annual fundraising event has been impacted but everyone at the Old Village Inn is still going to try – On Saturday, December 19, all income from
meals sold will go to Make-AWish with the goal of raising $7,000, about the cost of one wish. They can only seat so many people so reservations will be required. Take-aways meals will also be available and included in the effort. Cash donations are always welcome. A few baskets will be up for auction on Facebook and Instagram as well. For reservations or for more information, call 207-6467088 or go or visit www.theoldvillageinn.net.
partments have also joined forces to help provide gifts to Eliot children, ages 0-16, whose families need assistance. Wish tags have been placed on the Giving Tree at the police station and can be picked by donors who then purchase the gift wish and bring it
back, unwrapped, to the station by December 21. Donors may instead help the program by mailing a check, made payable to Friends of ECSD, to Giving Tree at 27 Dixon Road, Eliot, ME 03903. For additional information, call Judy Smith at 207-439-1890.

Old York Celebrates Yuletide
YORK Old York Historical Society is delighted to present a Yuletide celebration at historic Jefferds Tavern this season, with a spectacular display of holiday greens and historical vignettes. Take a peek through the windows of the tavern to glimpse scenes of holi-
days past, or bring your family for a picture-perfect holiday photo under a garland of greens. The holiday garland on Jefferds Tavern and wreath on the museum center are the creation of Anika Wilson of Bad Rabbit Flowers in Westbrook. Assembled with the help of a team of

Visitors are invited to come by any time to take photographs with friends and family. Please be sure to tag Old York on social media (#OYHSyuletide)! Inside the tavern, staff have created two historic holiday scenes which can be safely seen looking in the first-floor windows. A large 1940s dollhouse will also be on display in the windows of the museum center visitors entrance. Because of social distancing requirements, the public will not be able to enter the building. Jefferds Tavern was built in 1750 in Wells on the King’s Highway, a stage and mail route between Portsmouth, NH, and Portland. The building was moved to York in 1941, and restored to create an idealized version of a colonial tavern. “We hope the public will enjoy this festive Yuletide display,” says Joel Lefever, Old York’s executive director. “While we are unable to safely open our doors for the usual hol-

Visitors may enjoy the displays at their convenience, which will be illuminated until 8 p.m. every night. Dear Computer Lady, I’m becoming very frustrated, because my cursor has a mind of its own and jumps around while I type... HELP! Hugh Dear Hugh, This is probably the most commonly asked question I get asked, and when I start to answer it, people usually try to argue with me saying that I am wrong, but I have not had a person come back yet and show that I was wrong. While you are typing, your hands are going over the touchpad on your laptop to touch the letter keys. When this happens, the touchpad detects movement either because your palms brush against the touchpad, or if the touchpad is really sensitive, it just detects the motion. When the touchpad
~ Ask The Computer Lady & News ~ detects movement, it moves the cursor on your screen. To test and see if this is what is happening on your computer, tape a small piece of cardboard, (or one of those credit cards from the offers that come in the mail) over the touchpad and start typing. I’m willing to bet the cursor will stay where you want it. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I’ve heard that LibreOffice can be used to open files created years ago in MS Works (WPS files, DOC files, Spreadsheets, etc.). I am running Windows 10 Home edition. Under system type, it says that it is a 64-bit operating system with a X64-based processor. When asked to choose which Windows download I want at the Free Office site, the choices
NOW ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS
are Windows X86 or Windows X86_64. Which one is the appropriate choice for me? There are also two LibreOffice versions available: the 5.4.3 “fresh” version and the 5.3.7 “still” version. Which one would you recommend? Francis Dear Francis, Let’s go to: www.libreoffice. org/download/download/ and take a look at the options. In the “Choose your operating system” section, there are two options for Windows. The Windows X86 version is actually the 32-bit version of Windows. If you had an older computer, or were not sure if you had a 64-bit operating system or not, you would select that one. Since you already know you are running the 64-bit version of Windows 10 on your computer,

you can select, Windows X86_64 which is the same as your 64-bit operating system. As for which version of LibreOffice you should select, the first one is the newest version. It might have more features, but it might not have all the bugs worked out yet. The second one is a little bit older, but is more stable. You can select whichever one you want, but if you want the version that has had the bugs worked out of it, go with the second one. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am running Windows 10, I cannot figure out how to change my default view of files to “List”. When I attempt to change it folder by folder (which takes hours), I often find it has reverted back to the default “Details” view. Is there a way to change to “List” view universally? Thank you for all you do! Best Wishes, Stephanie Dear Stephanie, The first step to setting the default view for all your folders is to set up one folder exactly the way you want all your other folders to look. When you have it set up, click “View” in the ribbon, then click, “Options” (located on the right side of the ribbon). This will open the “Folder Options” dialog box. In the Folder Options dialog box, click on the “View” tab. In the “Folder Views” section, click the button that says, “Apply to Folders”. Click the, “Yes” button in the confirmation dialog box. Finally, click the “OK” button in the Folder Options dialog box to save your changes and close the dialog box. Your might have to repeat this process for different types of folders (folders with music or pictures are treated differently) but this is much faster than doing one folder at a time. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I hope you can help me, I have somehow copied my photos from my phone to my computer multiple times, and now have duplicates of almost every picture in different locations. I know I need to clean them up, but this is going
York Giving Tree YORK The York Police Association is reaching out to ensure that local families in need have a Merry Christmas. There is a Giving Tree located in the York Police Department lobby with gift tags available. Interested individuals can come pick out a tag, purchase that item, and bring it back to the station by December 16. Another option is to go to the York Police Department website at www.yorkpolice.org and go to the Amazon Wish List on the bottom left-hand side. From there you can have the gift sent directly to the police station, and they’ll take care of the rest. Cash and gift card donations can be left with the administration staff at the station Monday-Friday. FMI: Jaime Leighton at 207-363-1031 or jleighton@yorkpolice.org. to take forever! Please tell me there is an easier way. Thank you, Dakota Dear Dakota, I actually have a great way to speed up the process of cleaning up your files. Some time ago, a reader sent me a link to this free program: www.auslogics.com/en/software/duplicate-file-finder/ and I have been putting it to use. Sometimes when I am working on a project, either learning or teaching a subject, I make copies of files as I go, and I have been using this program to clean things up. One helpful hint for this program though, is to narrow the results down to just the specific folders you are working on, otherwise you might be overwhelmed by the number of results. The files you remove can be sent to the recycle bin so that you can restore a file later if you desire. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Parade & Letters to Santa Brings Good Cheer NORTH BERWICK The town of North Berwick was disappointed at having to cancel their annual Tree Lighting event this year, but still came together (safely) to enjoy a parade on November 28. The North Berwick Recreation Department, with help from the Police, Fire and Rescue Departments, encouraged residents of all ages to smile and laugh again. Sparky The Dalmatian, as well as volunteers as Rudolph, Frosty, Gingerbread Girl, and the Grinch, joined the entourage with also the Tri-Town Bookmobile and their walking dinosaur. Santa, Mrs. Claus, and their assistance elf, gathered 96 letters along the parade route

which would soon be answered by Santa once he returned home. Children of North Berwick can still drop off a letter to Santa at the special North Pole mailbox kept at the North Berwick Town Hall (ring buzzer if it’s not outside) until Friday, December 11. Please remember to include a return address! (Image from Facebook)

YORK The Greater York Region Chamber is presenting its first annual Business “Light-Fest” Challenge where local businesses can take part in a light-hearted decorating competition where the public can vote for the business with the best holiday display. Voting is available on the chamber website at www.gatewaytomaine.org. The chamber will also be creating a document listing the participating businesses and the coupons they may be offering. The chamber will be posting images on Facebook of the business light displays as they get them. As a way to safely visit local businesses, new and old, and win prizes, York Parks & Recreation is sponsoring a Candy Cane Hunt in York through December 11. Participants print out an answer sheet then drive around the community to visit the listed businesses, and then write down the number that’s shown on the candy cane sign displayed on the front lawn or shop window. Completed sheets must be submitted to the York Parks & Recreation office, 200 Route 1, York, by 3 p.m. on Friday, December 11. Prizes will be given to one lucky participant who finds 10 places and to another participant who finds them all. with nearly every other state in the nation which have ongoing emergency declarations, according to the National Governors Association. The Governors of New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, and Rhode Island have also renewed States of Emergencies this month. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts remains in a State of Emergency, which remains in effect until rescinded. “To all Maine people, please, to keep our small businesses open, to prevent our hospitals from being overwhelmed, to keep our kids in school, to protect yourselves as well as people you may never meet – get your flu shot, wear your mask, wash your hands, and watch your distance, especially during the upcoming holiday season,” said Governor Mills. “I know we are growing tired. This is not forever, but we have to do these things in

Boy Scouts Scouting for Food Drive BERWICK Scouting for Food is once again being hosted by Boy Scout Troop 313 for the Community Food Pantry on Saturday, December 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The pantry serves families from Somersworth, NH, Rollinsford, NH, Berwick, and Lebanon. This year, due to the pandemic, the troop will be making some changes in the way they host Scouting for Food. To keep everyone as safe as possible, Scouts will not be going door to door to ask for non-perishable food donations. Instead, the public can bring food donations to a drive-thru drop-off location at the Berwick United Methodist Church located at 37 School Street (across from Cumberland Farms). Simply drive to the parking area behind the Church, off of Wilson Street, where Scouts will be waiting to gladly accept your donations. Appropriate social distancing and mask wearing practices will be followed to ensure the safest environment
possible. In addition, they will also be offering a pick-up service in Berwick. Simply call 603-9534617 between 9 a.m. and noon on Saturday, December 12 and arrangements can be made for someone to come pick up a donation. The mission of the Community Food Pantry is that no family should go hungry. Please help Troop 313 help the Food Pantry achieve that mission! In addition to the Berwick drop-off location, The Community Food Pantry located at First Parish United Church, 176 West High Street in Somersworth, NH, will also accept donations during this event.

Attorney General Issues Face Covering Enforcement Guidance AUGUSTA The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) and Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) issued guidance to businesses and other organizations which interact with the public detailing these enforcement options. The guidance clearly states that the Governors Executive Orders have the force of law and spells out face covering requirements for individuals and establishments, including which establishments must enforce wearing of face coverings, and the potential consequences for noncompliance. The joint OAG-DHHS guidance explains the Executive Order on face coverings and the requirements and expectations it places on individuals and establishments. These include: The definition of public settings as places like stores, restaurants, and government buildings; Clarification that all businesses may, and some businesses must enforce face covering usage, and further clarification on which

FINANCE & CAREER Real Estate Sales, Prices Up AUGUSTA Maine’s real estate sales are heating up — by double digits. According to statistics released today by the Maine Association of Realtors, Realtors across the state sold 2,341 single-family existing homes last month — a jump of 26.88 percent over October 2019. The median sales price (MSP) for homes sold reached $280,000, a 24.50 percent increase over October 2019. The MSP indicates that half of the homes
were sold for more and half sold for less. “The residential real estate recovery since the COVID-impacted second quarter has been robust,” says Tom Cole, 2020 President of the Maine Association of Realtors and Broker with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate The Masiello Group in Brunswick. “January through October 2020 sales are 5.6 percent ahead of the comparable time period for 2019 — Maine’s best year ever.
BANKRUPTCY
Effective, Compassionate Representation
“Buyers are plentiful across Maine and they are facing a sustained tight supply of for-sale inventory. This supply/demand imbalance, buoyed by historically-low mortgage interest rates, is resulting in increased competition and price appreciation.” The National Association of Realtors reported a national sales increase of 26.7 percent last month, while the national MSP reached $317,700—a rise of 16.0 percent. The regional Northeast experienced a sales climb of 30.4 percent in October, and a 20.2 percent jump in median sales prices to hit $356,500. “Maine’s lower incidence of COVID compared to the rest of the country, plus the increase
in tele-working, has resulted in out-of-state buyers adding to the demand for Maine homes,” explains Cole. “Historically, about 25 percent of monthly home purchases in Maine are by outof-state buyers; during October, that number was 36 percent.

Grants will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis which will allow for funding to be dispersed as applications are received and reviewed. The application portal will open December 2 at 9:30 a.m. on the DECD’s website (www.maine. gov/decd/home) and will remain open until funds are depleted. Funds must be committed by December 30. www.joshuas.biz Dear Friends,
Regretfully, we are going to close our dining rooms for the time being. The virus combined with current fears and restrictions have made our business model unsustainable. Our dining rooms aren’t full of people enjoying each other’s company, appreciating our service, giving warmth and life to our little restaurant. It just isn’t the same; it is too quiet. While getting a quiet table might be great for some, it isn’t great for our bottom line. Closing our dining rooms is the most difficult decision I’ve ever had to make. It crushes me to layoff the people who have made it great. I hate it, but I need to give Joshua’s a fighting chance to make it through. In the meantime, we are going to keep making breads, ice cream and pie. We’ll keep grilling, searing and roasting. We’ll continue planning out our gardens at Easter Orchard Farm and harvesting from its greenhouses. We will keep preparing for the day when we can reopen our doors to you. Tuesdays through Saturdays starting at 5pm, we will continue offering takeout and curbside pickup. Our menu can be found at joshuasrestaurantandbar.com. Thank you, Josh

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.
missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists.

Students may go to their individual school’s OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) to choose a book to read or listen to directly from their school computer, device, or cell phone.

WELLS We are heartbroken to tell you that we lost our beautiful, beloved Hootie to sudden undiagnosed heart failure. He was Safe Haven’s shop cat and official greeter. The day after Thanksgiving, she was having difficulty breathing, and attempts to save her at the emergency vet failed. We are heartbroken. Hootie was mascot at our IGA Plaza Thrift Shop for six years, after graduating with top honors from our Scaredy Cat School (“where frightened cats learn to be brave”). She greeted every shopper with purrs, happily posed to convince everyone into fawning over her. And everyone did. People from all over the country have told us that Hootie and our other shop cats were among their first stops when they visited Maine each season. She leaves behind a brokenhearted family, her brothers, Chilly Willy and Itty Bitty Boo Boo, and her friend Kanga. All are still wondering where did Hootie go? We’ll never forget our beloved Hootie. She’ll be honored at our new Cattail Farm shop with

a photo and her favorite cat tree. Next spring, when we develop our memorial garden, she will have a place of honor. But Hootie’s place will always be in our hearts. We still hear her purring and those friendly yellow eyes. God Bless You, Hootie. Safe Haven endured another tragedy last week when a family of stray cats was trapped and brought in gradually. Last to arrive was the father. Several days later, this handsome tomcat was found deceased. A post-mortem exam revealed he died from ingesting rat poison. This poor kitty never had a chance to live a safe and happy life because someone in the area put out rat poison. Perhaps he ate it himself, or ate an animal that had ingested it. Please do not use
