Christmas Prelude Celebration in Kennebunkport KENNEBUNKPORT Kennebunkport pulls out all the stops and turns the town into a winter wonderland for Christmas Prelude, which began Dec. 2 and runs to Dec. 14. Kennebunkport's Christmas Prelude has been noted as the ultimate seaside holiday celebration. It was the early spring of 1982 when Henry Pasco called a meeting of business people for the purpose of discussing ways for the business community to give thanks to the residents of Kennebunkport and Kennebunk for supporting them. Pasco suggested a Christmas Festival of some sort to create a sense of community spirit. At the time

Nantucket, Mass. and Marblehead, Mass. were staging Christmas Festivals. The goal was not to duplicate these events, but to

stage their own unique festival. Committees were formed and the name Christmas Prelude™ was suggested.

The celebrations start off with the Dock Square tree lighting, where everyone gathers around as carolers take the stage to sing our favorite Christmas tunes. Other events include historic house tours, sleigh rides, concerts and more. Kids will love watching Santa arrive in town on a real Maine Lobster Boat! Shoppers will delight in the steals and deals around town, with stores offering great seasonal discounts for those looking to get a jump on their Christmas shopping. Many shop owners and art galleries will even serve up cookies and fresh cider to warm up visitors as they

browse. There are also several local craft fairs that offer unique and hand made gifts from local artisans. With so many festive ways to celebrate the holiday season, it is no wonder that Christmas Prelude has gained a large amount of media attention. HGTV recently featured the annual Kennebunkport celebration as the “#2 Christmas Town in America. Prelude celebrations have even begun spreading to nearby towns Kennebunk and Cape Porpoise, which constructs a Christmas tree made out of lobster traps! Kennebunkport is the perfect place to kick off the See PRELUDE page 6...

When he moved on to the rank of Boy Scout, he hit the road running, earning his ranks and awards as soon as requirements would allow. Within his first 15 months as a Boy Scout, Burgess was elected into the Order of the Arrow (OA) and now serves as representative for his troop #313. An avid outdoorsman, he creat-

ed a hiking trail for the town of Berwick for his service project, whereby he constructed 400 feet of “bog bridge, consisting of half logs that hikers could walk on through wetlands. The project lasted four months and upon completion Jacob dedicated it to the men and women of Berwick, Maine that served in the armed forces. Now an Eagle Scout, scouting for Burgess has become his life, finding passion for the life style of helping others. For

Kindness Keeps Memory of Veteran Alive

SANFORD – WABAN Resident Mike Liberty has a big heart and recently had a chance to show his kindness toward an admired co-worker. Liberty initiated a gesture of caring to honor the memory of his dear friend Jim Reed, a retired Veteran who is remembered as the bright and friendly face at the Home & Living entrance of Sanford’s

Walmart, who greeted everyone from his wheelchair. For almost eight years, Mike and Jim worked side by side, but last year, on Christmas Day, Jim passed away. Mike has missed his friend. A few months ago, Liberty came up with an idea of how Jim Reed could be honored, not only as a dear friend and exemplary employee, but also as a

Veteran. He wanted a star with Jim’s name to be displayed at the store for all to see and remember him. Liberty took the idea to the Walmart management team. “I thought it would be nice for everyone to look at, Liberty said. Liz Gile, the House Manager where Liberty lives, said, “He talked about it for a long time, since the Spring. When asked about Jim’s special qualities, Liberty said,

“His friendship, his humor‌ just being Jim.â€? Walmart Assistant Manager Anthony Alemany delivered the good news to Liberty whose persistence paid off when the head office agreed to create the memorial and display it. A ceremony was planned for Veterans Day, appropriately so, as Reed was a Navy Veteran, and family, friends, co-workers and local Veterans gathered to honor him. Ann Reed, Jim’s widow was in attendance and very touched by the gesture. Liberty’s father, Bob

WELLS – The 20th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner for area seniors presented by the eighth grade class at Wells Junior High School took place on November 16. Within two hours, approximately 425 seniors had been served a traditional Thanksgiving meal in the school’s multi-purpose room. Started in 1994 as a gesture of goodwill to the community, the dinner also serves as a service learning experience for eighth graders and the culmination of a five-week Generations Unit in Language Arts class taught by Julie Esch and Matt Coleman. In this class, students study issues related to aging and produce oral histories from interviews with residents of Sentry Hill at York Harbor. In preparation for the feast, students made decorations, banners, napkins and decorated the dining room. They set up tables and chairs and also baked pies. On the day of the dinner students, dressed in white shirts and black slacks, greeted guests, seated them at their tables, worked in the kitchen, waited on tables and helped with clean-up. There was even a valet service provided by several high school seniors. Occupational Therapist for WJHS and Wells High School Robin Reidy commented that she received “a full number of compliments from many diners about the impressive work of the students. Reidy pointed out that each year brings a new group of eighth graders to work on this large event. “For some of the kids who have not had much training or served people ever, they really did a nice job stepping up, said Reidy. Eighth grader Lauren Bartlett was on the wait staff. With some initial trepidation about serving, Bartlett said that her job of taking orders and delivering meals to table 13 got easier as the dinner progressed. Bartlett indicated that some of the residents of Sentry Hill actually came by bus to the school a few days earlier in the week to visit and lunch with students. Those affiliated with the Wells-Ogunquit Senior Center at Moody now make up a large portion of those who attend the Thanksgiving Dinner. “We think it is absolutely wonderful what the children do, said Sheena Allara, Director of the Wells-Ogunquit

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Holiday Folk Concert at First Congregational Church KITTERY Susie Burke, David Surette, and Kent Allyn will perform in a Holiday Folk Concert presented by the Kittery Art Association Music Series on Friday evening, December 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall at the First Congregational Church on Pepperrell Road in Kittery Point. The concert will feature a number of selections from their holiday CD “Wonderland,” along with folk and acoustic fare from their standard repertoire. With influences and styles ranging from folk to jazz, Celtic to rock, blues to Broadway and beyond, this trio presents the seasonal repertoire with heart, flair, and energy. Burke and Surette have made a name for themselves as one of the finest acts on the lively New England folk scene. Together since 1988, they have built a steady following for their own blend of contemporary, traditional, and original folk and acoustic music. Kent Allyn, a seasoned studio musician, performer, and longtime anchor of Ben Baldwin & “The Big Note,” is known for his extraordinary musical versatility. Of their holiday CD, Boston Globe music writer Scott Alarik says, “Wonderland is a

wintry gem, elegant as a Manhattan midnight, bewitching as hot buttered rum, and as warm and folksy as your grandmother’s old quilt. The trio moves gracefully among pop chestnuts, new songs, and ancient carols. Surette’s playing on guitar, mandolin, and cittern, is a marvel of

melodic purity and ribbon-candy chordal color, lightly augmented by Allyn’s quicksilver piano. Burke’s twilight mezzo always puts melody before mechanics and heart before dazzle.”

Together these three fine artists will ring in the holiday with music everyone will enjoy. Doors open at 7 p.m. There is

a suggested donation of $15 per person, $10 for seniors and students. For information, call 207451-9384 or 207-384-8151.

Russian A Capella Ensemble at Christ Church, Kennebunk KENNEBUNK The Russians are coming! Christ Church, at 6 Dane St, Kennebunk, is thrilled and proud to present the St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble in concert on Monday, December 8, at 7 p.m. These four young men form a highly polished a capella quartet touring throughout the world, presenting a varied program ranging from Russian traditional folk and liturgical music to popular contemporary music. Highly trained and educated vocalists Kirill Sokolov, Sergey Shapinsky, Andrei Volikov, and Vadim Smantser formed the group in 2003 to expand the known limits of vocal music. With just four performers, they present complex works usually performed

by much larger groups. Their repertoire encompasses various epochs and styles, from ancient Russian chants to Western European chorales to contemporary compositions, along with Russian folk songs, and secular and religious music. To learn more about these very talented young men, visit their website http://sfcrook.com. Suggested donation for the concert is $10, or $7 for seniors and children, or whatever you choose to give. Christ Church is handicapaccessible from the parking lot behind Town Hall, and also has a parking lot in front across Dane Street. For more information, please visit the website evwww. christchurchkennebunk.org, or call 207- 985-4494.

Maine Home Sales Up 26.24 Percent Impressive, double-digit real estate sales increases were recorded last month across the state of Maine. According to Maine Listings, statewide single-family existing home sales jumped 26.24 percent last month, compared to figures from October 2013. The median sales price (MSP) for those homes eased a very slight 0.71 percent to $175,000. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. The National Association of Realtors released statistics indicating a 2.9 rise in October’s national single-family existing home sales. Sales prices across the country were up 5.6 percent to a national MSP of $208,700 last month. Regionally, the Northeastern United States

witnessed a sales increase of 4.4 percent, and the regional MSP rose 1.2 percent to $246,900. Angelia Levesque, President of the Maine Association of Realtors, said, “The rise in units sold seems to echo what I’ve been hearing from Realtors all across the state. Many buyers hoped to be settled into their new homes before winter, so Realtors have been very busy showing their clients options. Levesque, a Realtor with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate/The Masiello Group in Bangor, has also seen “steady activity in the marketplace currently. I’m optimistic that 2014 will end positively, and activity will continue throughout 2015. Source: Maine Real Estate Information System, Inc.

BUSINESS & FINANCE

What Can You Learn from the “Oracle of Omaha? Warren Buffet, the “Oracle from Omaha, is considered one of the most successful investors in history. Yet while the investment world may seem complex, Mr. Buffet’s advice is actually pretty simple. Here are a few Buffet quotes, along with some suggestions on putting them to use: “Whether we’re talking about socks or stocks, I like buying quality merchandise when it is marked down. Essentially, this means you should look for good investment vehicles whose price may have dropped. A “bear market tends to drag down many stocks — even those with strong fundamentals and favorable prospects. These stocks might then be considered “bargains. One way to determine whether a stock is “expensive or “cheap is by looking at its price-to-earnings ratio (P/E). For example, if Company “A has a share price of $20 and earnings per share of $4, then it has a P/E of 5. On the other hand, if Company “B has the same share price of $20, but has earnings per share of $2, its P/E would be 10. So it would be considered more expensive than Company “A. Be aware, though, that the P/E ratio works better as a measure of cost when you are comparing two companies in the same industry. “Time is the friend of the

wonderful business, the enemy of the mediocre. Be prepared to own quality stocks for the long term; over time, your confidence may be rewarded. On the other hand, if an investment is not of high quality, its flaws will be revealed over the years. “If investors insist on trying to time their participation in equities, they should try to be fearful when others are greedy and greedy only when others are fearful. Trying to “time the market — that is, attempting to buy when prices are low and sell when prices are high — is a difficult task. Too many people do just the opposite: They try to “cut their losses by selling when the market is down and then go after the “hot investment whose price may already be as high as it’s going to go. Mr. Buffet clearly is not in favor of a market timing approach, and those who try to do it, he says, are probably better off by going against the crowd. Keep in mind, though, that even when holding investments rather than trying to time the market, investing in equities does involve risk, including potential loss of principal.

endless holding period may not be possible for all of us, you get the idea: the longer you keep a good investment, the better off you may be when you do sell. "The line separating investment and speculation, which is never bright and clear, becomes blurred still further when most market participants have recently enjoyed triumphs. Nothing sedates rationality like large doses of effortless money. The lesson here? Be an investor, not a speculator. A long run-up in the market can increase your wealth, but it may also make you prone to risky

behavior if you think that all your investments will rise indefinitely. As an investor, you may well want to consider Mr. Buffet’s ideas — after all, they’ve sure worked well for him.

Health & Fitness What You Need to Know About Ebola

Ebola has been ravaging residents of West Africa for quite some time, but the virus hit closer to home when the disease touched down in North

America in September of 2014. The presence of the Ebola virus in the US sparked immediate panic, but many concerns surrounding this potentially deadly virus are

a strain of an Ebola virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Though Ebola primarily affects humans and other primates, it also can be passed by bats and other wild animals. Ebola viruses are contained in five different varieties: Ebola virus (formerly Zaire virus), Sudan virus, TaĂŻ Forest virus, Bundibugyo virus, and Reston virus. Little is known of how the virus first passes to humans, but it could be through interaction or consumption of infected wild animals. Human-to-human transmission is to blame for the epidemic in Africa. How is Ebola contracted? In humans, Ebola spreads only via direct contact with the bodily fluids of a person who has developed symptoms of the virus. Fluids that may contain the Ebola virus include saliva, blood, mucus, vomit, feces, tears, breast milk, urine, and semen. The World Health Organization says only people who are quite sick are able to spread Ebola through saliva, and more studies are necessary to determine if the virus can be transmitted through

sweat. Many people are infected when they come in contact with blood, vomit and feces from infected individuals. Vomiting and diarrhea are main symptoms of the disease and prolific transmitters of the virus. It's important to note that deceased bodies remain infectious, and people handling human remains have contracted the virus from burial rituals and embalming. Even if a person has recovered from Ebola, the virus may still be able to persist in semen or breast milk of survivors for up to seven weeks. Caution is always suggested to prevent additional transmission. What are Ebola symptoms? The incubation period for Ebola is between two and 21 days. Many infected persons exhibit no symptoms during this time. Typically, the first symptoms of the virus to appear are the sudden onset of fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headache, and sore throat, according to the WHO. Vomiting, rash, diarrhea, and symptoms of impaired kidney and liver function See EBOLA page 19...

Health & Fitness ...EBOLA from page 18 may eventually appear. In some cases, internal and external bleeding may occur. It can be very difficult to distinguish Ebola from other infectious diseases. Several tests are required to confirm Ebola is the culprit behind symptoms. How is Ebola treated? Many nations do not have the necessary medical care facilities and equipment to treat Ebola or contain the disease. There are currently no proven treatments available for Ebola, nor a vaccine. However, supportive care in the way of rehydration and treatment of specific symptoms can improve a patient's chance of survival. Experimental treatments with blood products and immune therapies also are being evaluated. At press time, two Texas nurses, who contracted Ebola while treating the late Thomas Eric Duncan, the first person to be diagnosed with Ebola in the US, were recovering quite well. Process for avoiding Ebola and containing the virus Successful outbreak control relies heavily on case management, monitoring symptoms, good laboratory services, and safe burials. The CDC recommends practices of careful hygiene, including washing hands with soap and water. Avoidance of blood and body fluids is key. Anyone who has had contact with someone suffering from Ebola is at risk. The virus can enter the body through broken skin or unprotected mucus membranes in the eyes, nose or mouth, and the CDC released updated guidelines for people who might have been exposed to the Ebola virus. "The new guidelines increase the level of protection by outlining different levels of exposure and outlining different public health actions that can be taken for each of those levels of exposure," said CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden. Direct contact with infected body fluids, for instance, would be classified as high risk. Someone would be considered low risk if he or she traveled on an airplane with a person showing symptoms of Ebola. At press time, no travel restrictions to North America from West Africa had been implemented. However, travelers should expect screenings for symptoms at airports. While Ebola has a high fatality rate elsewhere in the world, health advisors want

to reiterate that pneumonia and the flu are responsible for more deaths in the US than Ebola. This article was provided by Metro-

Health & Fitness Simple Ways To Maintain Your Mental Acuity Many people know that a combination of a healthy diet and routine exercise is the best way to maintain their physical health. But what about mental well-being? Memory lapses are often assumed to be an accepted side effect of aging, but such an assumption is incorrect, as there are many steps men and women can take to maintain their mental acuity well into their golden years. • Find time for cardio-

vascular exercise. Cardiovascular exercise can help men and women maintain healthy weights and reduce their risk for potentially deadly ailments like diabetes and heart disease. But cardiovascular exercise also can boost brain power. Cardiovascular exercise pumps oxygenrich blood to the brain, and that blood contains glucose that can fuel brain cells. Cardiovascular exercise also strengthens blood vessels, which can help prevent

potentially devastating diseases, such as stroke, that can have a lasting and negative impact on cognitive function. • Find time for friends and family. Many people need no reason to socialize, but those that do can now cite boosting brain function as a great reason to get together with family and friends. Routine socialization can keep a brain sharp by reducing its levels of cortisol, a potentially destructive hormone brought on by stress. Researchers also believe that routine interaction with other people stimulates structures in the brain’s frontal lobe that are likely responsible for planning, decision making and response control. • Squeeze in a nap every so often. Naps can have a reenergizing effect on men and women, but a study from German researchers also found that naps also can improve memory. In the study, researchers divided participants into three groups: people who would stay awake for 60 minutes; people who would sleep for six minutes; and people who would sleep for 30 to 45 minutes. After the hour was up, participants were given a word recall test, and those who slept performed better on the test than those who hadn’t. But the development that was perhaps most interesting was that those who slept for just six minutes performed just as well on the test as those who slept for far longer, leading researchers to suggest that men and women need not take long naps to improve their memories. • Include fish in your diet. A study from researchers at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center found that people who eat fish once per week have a 60 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease than those who do not include fish in their weekly diets. Researchers credit this lower risk to DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid that is found in both the brain and in fish such as salmon and tuna. This article was provided by MetroCreative. Health & Fitness The American Heart Association’s (AHA) Operation Winter Weather Warnings recently launched with an educational campaign targeted to individuals with existing heart disease or stroke, and those who may be at high risk. This includes people with a strong family history, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smokers, those who are overweight and the sedentary. For these individuals, the stresses of the season may pose extra concern and the association is urging individuals to exercise due caution to avoid sudden cardiac death. Deaths from coronary artery disease tend to rise rapidly right after Thanksgiving, continuing through Christmas, and peaking around New Year’s Day. Several factors may influence this unfortunate trend, from an increase in respiratory infections during the winter, to increased workload on the heart from activities such as shoveling of heavy snow, according to the AHA. The AHA recommends the following tips to help respond to and prevent sudden cardiac arrest:

cise, but not if you are normally sedentary, are in poor physical condition, or have risk factors that make snow shoveling inadvisable for your health. Everyone who must be outdoors in cold weather should avoid sudden exertion, like lifting a heavy shovel full of snow. Even walking through heavy, wet snow or snowdrifts can strain a person's heart.

Avoid sudden cold weather exertion Snowstorms present particular challenges for everyone, primarily because getting rid of the snow usually means sudden exertion in cold weather. In and of itself, snow shoveling can be healthy, good exer-

Stay Warm People with coronary heart disease often suffer chest pain or discomfort called angina pectoris when they're in cold weather. Besides cold temperatures, high winds, snow and rain also can steal body heat. Wind is especially dangerous, because it

Recognize the symptoms of hypothermia Hypothermia occurs when your body can't produce enough energy to keep the internal body temperature warm enough, causing it to fall below normal. It can kill you. Heart failure causes most deaths in hypothermia. Symptoms include lack of coordination, mental confusion, slowed reactions, shivering and sleepiness. Children, the elderly and those with heart disease are at special risk. As people age, their ability to maintain a normal internal body temperature often decreases. Because elderly people seem to be relatively insensitive to moderately cold conditions, they can suffer hypothermia without knowing they're in danger.

...WARNING from page 21 body's heat can be lost through your head and ears are especially prone to frostbite. Keep your hands and feet warm, too, as they tend to lose heat rapidly. Avoid alcohol before heading outdoors Alcohol gives an initial feeling of warmth, but this is caused by expanding blood vessels in the skin. Heat is then drawn away from the body's vital organs. Alcohol consumption and physical activity in harsh winter weather conditions can increase the likelihood of hypothermia. Learn CPR and/or HandsOnly CPR CPR: About 80 percent of all out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in private residential settings, so being trained to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can mean the difference between life and death for a loved one. Effective bystander CPR, provided immediately after cardiac arrest, can double a victim’s chance of survival. The AHA conducts courses convenient to everyone.

To access a course listing, log on to the AHA’s web site at www.heart.org/cpr. Hands-Only CPR: Hands-OnlyTM CPR is CPR without mouth-to-mouth breaths. It is recommended for use by people who see an adult suddenly collapse in the “out-of-hospital setting (like at home, at work, in a park). It offers an easy to remember and effective option to those bystanders who have been previously trained in CPR but are afraid to help because they are not confident that they can remember and perform the steps of conventional CPR. It consists of two steps: 1) Call 911 (or send someone to do that). 2) Begin providing highquality chest compressions by pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest with minimal interruptions. For additional information on Hands-OnlyTM CPR and to watch an instructional video visit www.handsonlycpr. org.

The Weekly Recipe: Skillet-Roasted Okra and Shrimp Ingredients: 1 lb. of large raw shrimp, peeled and deveined, 21-25 count ½-1 lb. of okra, stem end removed and cut up into 1â€? pieces 1 pint of cherry tomatoes cut in half 1 medium onion, diced 1 cup of celery, diced 1 cup of red bell pepper, diced 2 tablespoons of flour olive oil 1 to 2 cups of shrimp broth* course kosher salt

fresh ground pepper 2 tablespoon of fresh parsley, chopped 3 garlic cloves finely chopped 1 bay leaf 3 cups of plain white rice to place mixture on for extra flavor (so cook first and let rest in a bowl)

Instructions: *To make your shrimp broth, place the shells in a small pot and cover with water. Bring to a medium boil and cook for 10 minutes. Remove shells from your broth. Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat, add the okra and cook until lightly browned, 4-5 minutes. Then transfer to a bowl. In the same skillet and with a bit more olive oil, add the tomatoes, onions, celery, and bell peppers. Cook over medium heat until softened. Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil and heat until hot, and add 1-2 cups of shrimp broth.

Shake the flour evenly over the mixture, to make a quick roux. Cook over medium heat for 1 minute and stir. Add the shrimp and cook until pink and tender about 2-3 minutes. Add the cooked okra and remaining spices and mix well. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, until thoroughly heated and serve over a large scoop of white rice. Shared by Paul Parent Garden Club

Seacoast Christian School Awards Commended Students in Scholarship Program SOUTH BERWICK The school administrator of Seacoast Christian School, Joseph Davis, announced recently that Alexandria Morin and Paige Morin have both been named Commended Students in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, was pre-

sented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors. “This is an incredible honor these two seniors,” stated Davis. “For a senior to score in the top 5 percent of all students across the nation is a great achievement, and to top it off; these girls are involved in their churches, sports, and other extracurricular activities”. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their

exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2015 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2015 competition by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT). “The young men and

women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will

help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success”. Both students from Seacoast Christian School have plans to attend college next year, and this award will help them achieve those goals. For more information about Seacoast Christian School, please call (207) 3845759 or email -info@SeacoastChristian.org.

less than their white, male counterparts. 51% of single working women in Maine make a living wage, but that number drops to 45% for a person of color. "Our report finds that a staggering percentage of fulltime workers aren't making ends meet and can't support a family. The vast majority of women and people of color working full time do not earn enough to support a family," said Allyson Fredericksen, Policy Associate at the Alliance for a Just Society. "Women and people of color are concentrated in occupations with low earnings, such as retail clerks, cashiers, waiters and waitresses, maids, housecleaners, and child care workers. These are workers we know, they are people we see every day." For Sonia Irambona, an immigrant from Burundi who

lives and works in Portland, the struggle to make ends meet is very real. Irambona, who had worked for a tourism agency in Kenya, found that even working multiple low-wage jobs in Portland's hospitality industry wasn't enough to cover basic expenses. "After paying for housing, I had less than $100 to live on each month, which just wasn't enough. I had no health care, and hardly enough money for anything else, let alone enough to save for emergencies," said Irambona. "People don't understand how hard it is to get by on low wages. It's not even a monthto-month struggle when you're not making a living wage - it's really a day-to-day struggle." The report calls for a series of policy changes to help close the wage gap for Mainers, including policies like raising the minimum wage, instituting paid sick days for employees and investing in programs like child care assistance. The release comes just weeks after voters in four states, Alaska, Arkansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota, voted to increase the minimum

wage and as Maine lawmakers prepare for a new legislative session. "We know that when women thrive, society thrives. Yet in 2014, too many women are struggling too make ends meet and too many children are living in poverty, with consequences for all of us," said Eliza Townsend, Executive Director of the Maine Women's Policy Center. "The good news is there is something we can do about it. We urge our elected leaders to make policy decisions that help women support themselves and their families." "When I was talking to voters on their doorsteps, time

and time again people would describe the difficulties they had working multiple jobs and still not making ends meet," said Heidi Brooks, state representative-elect for part of Lewiston. "I hope that my fellow legislators will come to Augusta ready to work together to tackle the pressing issues ahead of us. This report clearly shows that Maine can do better when it comes to providing living wage jobs and making sure we have policies that help people move up the economic ladder, not let them fall further down. "A full copy of the report and state findings can be found at: http://thejobgap. org.

...WAGE from page 17 future) for a single adult with no children working full-time in Maine is $15.82 an hour. Two adults, both working and with two children, would have to earn $19.49 an hour to make ends meet. The minimum wage in Maine is currently only $7.50 an hour. The report finds that for four of five household types, less than half of all workers are earning a living wage. Only 54% of single, working adults in Maine with no children make a living wage. That percentage is lower for a family of two working adults with two children with 42% earning a living wage. According to the report, the national average for workers making a living wage is 61%. People and Business Profiles

A Dream Comes True for South Berwick Couple SOUTH BERWICK – People peering into the storefront on Main Street will see a modern fabric shop with handmade totes and cosmetic bags, needles, pins and lots of colorful fabric. But those who go inside, far inside, will find this is a dream come true for hometown couple Rachel Dagan and Harley Regonini. Saltwater Fabrics, which will have its grand opening December 6, is rooted in the story of these two 26-year-olds who began dating as students at Marshwood High, where they were noted as the quiet ones in the back of the classroom. Dagan and Regonini met in Mr. Edgar’s journalism class, had their first date at Kittery’s town pizza and went together to the junior prom. But it has been a long and extraordinarily winding path from there, through break-ups, college, jobs, Afghanistan and Iraq to get to their shop in South Berwick. “I saw this place and I had an idea,” said Regonini, recalling his first glimpse of an empty storefront at 245 Main Street. “I checked it out; I did some back of the napkin math and I decided it was just the time to make Rachel’s dream a reality.” If you stop and chat for a while, it won’t take long to learn that this store is really a family affair. Dagan’s step mom and mother will both work at the store, clerking, making handsewn items and perhaps teaching classes. Both Dagan’s father and stepfather have already put in their time. Gregg Seward helped build the shelves with Regonini while father Larry Dagan painted the back room blue, despite a bad back. The two couples have been great friends since each of them remarried and Dagan grew up in both her mom’s home in Eliot and her dad’s home in Berwick. They all stood behind Dagan as she studied design at Keene State, took a job managing Portsmouth Fabric Co and then moved on as creative ser-

“Adorable One” Baby Clothes Sewn with Grandmother’s Love CAPE NEDDICK Adorable One - New England’s specialty shop for handmade baby and toddler clothing is gearing up for holiday gifts to dress that special little tyke in your life. From hand-sewn bomber jackets to one-of-a kind dresses to jumpers and assorted baby fashionware, Robin Mulcahy is stitching like crazy to make this year special for your Adorable One. The dream of opening a business hand-making baby and toddler clothing began to take shape several years ago, but Mulcahy knew her instincts were definitely on target after shopping for baby clothes as a new grandmother. “I found the little girls’ clothing choices were too sexy, and the little boys’ clothing had no style at all. They were dressing boys like little old men,” Mulcahy said. When she moved to Cape Neddick, to be close to her grandchildren, Mulcahy knew the time was right.

“I was looking for a change of direction and what brings me joy is making children’s clothing,” Mulcahy said. “Adorable One” is Mulcahy’s line of hand-made, mostly one-of-a-kind clothing and gift items for infants and toddlers. She still maintains her tailoring business, Garments of Praise, in Cape Neddick as well. Mulcahy can be reached at robinamulcahy@gmail.com and adorableonebyrobin.etsy.com Visit the “Adorable One” showroom and Garments of Praise tailoring workshop in Cape Neddick by appointment by calling 603-496-6628. Adorable One garments will also be showcased at Wentworth Greenhouse winter craft show in Rollinsford, NH, on Dec. 6, 13, and 20. Each article of clothing is hand-sewn and decorated from scratch, unique and yes, adorable. One tiny outfit is adorned with a dinosaur, another with a lobster, another with an elephant made of polka dots. The colors are bright

at age 5. She hasn’t stopped since. As a young mother, Mulcahy sewed out of her home and also managed the fabric department of a national chain store for eight years. Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Like orange kitties? Come meet Big Bert. This 6 year-old orange tabby tips the scales at 23 pounds, yet he’s not overweight. In an ideal home, he can rule the roost and be revered as the king of felines. Bert’s built like a wrestler with an adorable furry head the size of a muskmelon. His weight is distributed beautifully from the tip of his handsome head, to his big paws to the tip of this striped tail. Bert’s friendly, sweet, and silly. He loves playing laser mouse, and never misses his litter box. We love him but we want all our kitties to have a home of their very own in time for the holidays. Our hearts felt a tug when we said goodbye to Bashful and Sweetie Boy. They were just adopted by someone who has what it takes to adopt our shy kitties that need extra tender loving care. They were rescued from the Kittery garage colony, who survived the winter only because some kind people brought them food and bedding and replaced their frozen water with fresh day and night. Safe Haven rescued the whole colony and they lived in our Adoption Center and foster homes. All but Bashful and Sweetie Boy were adopted over the years. Volunteers Rex, Gary, Janet, and Jimi are still working tirelessly at our new adoption center site at 1420 Post Road in Wells. Despite the cold and snow, they work on Saturdays. Rex is there every day, often by himself, doing whatever needs to be done. We are very much in need

WEST KENNEBUNK – Meet Tuuka, a 2-year old Pit Bull Mix. Tuuka is an energetic fellow who loves getting lots of time to play. Fetch, tug ‘o war, walks, runs, he enjoys them all. He can be a little rough when he plays, but that’s just his style. Tuuka would be happy to share a new home with some other dogs, dog savvy cats, and older children who can handle him. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, Can you help me get BING completely off my computer? I hate it and the way it just takes over your computer. Thanks, Lynda Dear Lynda, Bing is a product of Microsoft, so of course they want it to be part of your life. You can, however, get rid of it completely. Lets start by removing any Bing toolbars or search items in the Control Panel. 1. The easiest way to get to the Control Panel in Windows 8, is to tap the windows logo key on your keyboard, then type, "Control Panel" in the search box, and click on Control Panel in the search results. 2. Once in the Control Panel,

click on, "Uninstall a Program". 3. It might take a minute for all your installed programs to load, but once they do, find any Bing products, click on it once, then click, "Uninstall" in the toolbar at the top of the list. 4. Repeat if there is more than one Bing product in the list. Once you have removed products there, it is time to remove Bing from your browser. 1. Go back to the Control Panel, and click on, "Network and Internet". 2. Click on "Internet Options". 3. In the Internet Properties dialog box, start on the, "General" tab and make sure your home page is set to a page you want. Change it if necessary. 4. Now, click on the, "Programs" tab and click the button

Give the Gift of Security, Give Computer Lady Gift Certificates!

that says, "Manage add-ons". 5. Look through the list of toolbars and extensions and disable any unwanted items. 6. Click on, "Search Providers" in the left column, click on "Bing" in the right column, then click the "Remove" button in the lowerright corner of the dialog box. 7. Close all the open dialog boxes, and you should be all set. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, First of all I would like to tell you how much I love your newsletter and I always learn something from each and every one of them. My question is the following. I have Norton antivirus. If I installed the Malwarebytes program, would it interfere with my antivirus program? l don’t think it will but I just wanted to make sure. Thank you! Carol Dear Carol, No, Malwarebytes will not interfere with any of the antivirus programs, in fact, I run Malwarebytes and AVG Internet Security 2015 on my computer together, and they work fine. Today, there seems to be a lot more malware infections on computers than virus infections. This doesn't mean that you don't need antivirus, but it does mean that you need to be sure you are also protected from malware. Did you know that cyber-

criminals want to enlist your computer in their network of computer (called a botnet) which they then use to commit crimes? These criminals distribute malware that can turn your computer into a bot. When this happens, you computer can perform automated tasks over the internet without your knowledge. Your computer could be used to send out spam email messages, spread viruses, attack computers and commit other kinds of crime and fraud. This slows down your computer, and sometimes causes it to crash frequently. Good malware protection will keep your computer running faster, and keep the bad guys (criminals) from using your system. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, My problem is with the touchpad on my laptop. I've had this Dell Latitude D350 laptop for 6 years and had been running Windows XP. When I upgraded to Windows 7 a couple months ago I realized my touchpad was still functioning even though I use a wireless mouse. I have tried all sorts of maneuvers to disable it - and it just prefers to stick with me. Can you tell me how to do that? I keep bumping it with my thumb pads while I'm typing and then my cursor jumps to someplace else in my document!! Very annoying. Thank you for any help - Nancy

Dear Nancy, When you upgraded to Windows 7, you probably lost the drivers for your touchpad, and also the drivers for any keyboard shortcut that might turn the touchpad off. You might be able to find touchpad drivers on Dell's website for your computer, but given the age of your computer, they are probably not available. (the average computer lasts 4 to 5 years). Sometimes, there is a setting in the Control Panel to disable the touchpad, but this is usually dependent on any drivers you would have installed. The best answer I can give you is the old fashioned lowtech one. Grab an old rewards card, or cut out a piece of a cereal box to cover your touchpad. Tape it to your laptop on one side so that you can flip it over your touchpad when you are typing, and flip it up if you ever want to use the touchpad. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a problem that I must have caused on my PC that is probably correctable, but I could use your expertise. MY in-house tech help is too busy. Whenever I click any link on my webpage opens a blank Tab. This is so annoying because I have all these tabs strung out next to my browser. Then I either have to reopen See COMPUTER page 37...

~ News ~ Kindergarteners Plant for Spring WELLS – Even though springtime 2015 is four months away, kindergarten students at Wells Elementary School recently took an early step towards providing for a fresh spring look to their school by planting close to 100 tulip bulbs in a green buffer area near the school’s playground. This is the twelfth year

that kindergarteners have planted tulips in the fall at various locations around the school including the school’s courtyard and on the lawn adjacent to Route 109. The Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) for WES purchased the bulbs and school volunteers pre-dug the holes.

On the afternoon of November 12, over 95 students left recess or class to participate. They received some brief direction on planting from Community Resource Coordinator Maryanne Foley and then were each handed a bulb by a school volunteer before picking a spot and burying their bulb. A patting down of the dirt with a
