Shandler Earns Military Excellence Award SOUTH BERWICK Seaman Recruit Meaghan Sandler, a native of South Berwick, graduated as top sailor from Recruit Training Command, Division 439, earning the Military Excellence Award on November 22. Sandler said she was excited and honored to receive the MEA. “I definitely was not expecting it, and I never thought I would win an award like this,” Sandler said. The Navy Club of the United States Military Excellence Award is the top award presented to the No. 1 recruit of their graduating training group. The MEA is awarded

to the recruit that best exemplifies the qualities of enthusiasm, devotion to duty, military bearing and teamwork. The award placed Sandler at the pinnacle of today’s newest sailors; she was awarded a flag letter of commendation for her achievements. Sandler, 20, is a 2017 graduate of Marshwood High School in South Berwick, where she played varsity softball. She earned an associate degree in criminal justice from Great Bay Community College in Portsmouth, NH. Sandler said she joined the Navy for career opportunities and educational benefits. “I want to pursue a career

in the criminal justice field and believed the Navy could help achieve that goal,” Sandler said. “Also, I want to continue my education and earn a bachelor’s degree in behavioral science.” Sandler credited her Recruit Division Commanders, Chief Hull Maintenance Technician Lucas Giles, Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Jeric Martin, and Engineman 1st Class Windhyjoy Guerrero for their leadership and guidance. “My RDCs pushed me the most throughout boot camp,” Sandler said. “They helped me feel confident and ready whenever I had a test or inspection. Light Show Illuminates Toys for Tots

BERWICK Every year, the Marine Corps Reserve collects new, unwrapped toys, books and other gifts and distributes those toys at Christmastime to children from some 700 communities covering all 50 states. Here at home in the tri-city area, there are many toy drop-off locations inside local businesses. Monetary donations can be made directly on www.toysfortots.org. Toy donations will be picked up starting December 13 so that Toys for Tots volunteers can sort, wrap and deliver these gifts, so there is still time to donate. In addition to donation sites at the Berwick Town Hall and the North Berwick Auto Center, there is another collection site that is well worth a visit. Chuck and Pamela Bogdan have been creating large scale outdoor Christmas light displays since 1997. As you might well imagine,

these displays have gotten bigger, better and brighter over the years. Since the their very first display 22 years ago, the Bogdan’s have also collected hundreds of pounds of food for the Food Cupboard maintained by the First Congregational of Rochester, New Hampshire. This year marks the fifth year the Bogdan’s have also collected toys for the Toys for Tots campaign and they are hoping to collect as many toys from now up until Christmas as they did in 2018. Help make Christmas wishes come true and make a difference in the life of a young child and/ or struggling family by taking a family a trip to the Bogdan Family Christmas light display at the intersection of Rochester Street and Hubbard Road in Berwick and bring a toy, book or nonperishable food to help others during this special time of the year.

‘Annie’ is back — and Better Than Ever — in Ogunquit Playhouse/Music Hall Production

factor would take the stage at the Music Hall as the holiday offering, through December 22, in collaboration with the Ogunquit Playhouse. “Annie” is a classic. It won the Tony Award for Best Musical (plus several other honors) for the original 1977 Broadway production. Since then, there have been many tours, a West End London run, several anniversary revivals, thousands of youth performances and hundreds of thousands of renditions of “Tomorrow” and “Hard Knock Life,” two of its favorite tunes. So why see “Annie” again? I asked myself that on Sunday afternoon, seated in the cozy confines of the vintage Music Hall, a classic venue in downtown Portsmouth. Then the lights dimmed, the orchestra blasted the familiar overture and the lights rose on a decrepit New York orphanage, circa 1933, with a passel of scruffy orphans cowering in the dark, as Annie, their sassy, streetwise leader belted out “Maybe.” Bright-eyed and bursting with optimism, Annie, played by the talented Josie Todd in an

endearing portrayal is one big reason to not miss this delightful “Annie.” And then there’s Sally Struthers, energetically cavorting and kvetching as the despicable, deplorable Miss Hannigan, the mean-spirited caretaker of the orphans. Struthers, a Playhouse favorite, never fails to delight in performances here. She’s played Hannigan in a national tour and clearly loves the part. She relishes her moments in the spotlight, singing her alcohol-infused “Little Girls” with fervor and making merry in “Easy Street” with the agile, high-stepping, amazingly talented Jeffry Denman and Angie Schworer as the shyster Rooster Hannigan and his gal pal Lily St. Regis. Both Denman and Schworer have appeared in or directed other Playhouse productions, and it’s a treat to see them having fun in these meaty roles. Robert Newman is wonderful as Oliver Warbucks. He’s a New York billionaire (sound familiar), rolling in dough, living in luxury while millions suffer hunger and homelessness during the Depression. Gail Bennett’s lovely Grace Farrell offers a nice counterbalance to Warbucks. Their rendition, along with Annie,

of “N.Y.C.” brings the hustlingbustling city to life. The rest of the cast adds to the “Annie” sparkle, especially Doug Carfrae as F.D.R. and Corey Joseph Masklee as Bert Healy, the radio star who warbles “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile” with the Boylan Sisters. The orphans — many local kids with Playhouse connections — are a delight. So, too, is Macy, the rescue dog, whose portrayal of Sandy, Annie’s mutt, adds heart-warming moments to the show. “Annie” is the perfect antidote to today’s worries and woes. Its all-too-familiar theme of the haves-versus-the-have-nots rang true in the 30s and still rings true today with painful honesty. But “Annie” looks beyond the heartache with appealing optimism, urging us to never give up hope. And that, above all else, is reason to see and savor “Annie” again. Antiques On Nine to Host Book Signing

KENNEBUNK On Friday, December 13, holiday shoppers looking for that unique gift for someone special may want to stop byAntiques on Nine, 81 Western Avenue, Kennebunk, 3-5 p.m. for a local author book signing and sale on select items in the store. “We are so lucky to have three talented local authors who are coming to sign books and chat with our customers,” says Beverly Bangs, owner of Antiques on Nine. “Each book is a different genre, each is beautifully written and each would make an ideal Christmas present.” Author Susan Doherty, a Montreal writer who spends “as much time as I can” at her Kennebunk Beach home, was just awarded QWF’s Mavis Gallant Prize for Non-fiction, 2019, for “The Ghost Garden: Inside the Lives of Schizophrenia’s Feared and Forgotten,” pub-

lished by Random House. Her book reaches into the lives of the most marginalized of our society and offers deep reflection on the fundamental question of how we should treat those whose lives are consumed by schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. “Life List: Field Notes of a Maine Birdwatcher” is the culmination of nearly a decade that Ken Janes spent photographing birds in his back yard at Kennebunk Beach and nearby coastal areas of southern Maine. Published by North Country Press, this stunningly illustrated and informative coffee table book showcases the special talent of Janes, a lifelong naturalist and amateur photographer who retired from a career in surgery in 2011. The third author is Robert Marier, a life-long Kennebunk Beach resident who had just celebrated his 80th birthday when he

decided to write a mystery novel about the area, which he titled “Tidal Pools.” Marier had so much fun, and success, writing his first book, he penned another based on his life-long experience as a low-handicap golfer. “Perfect Fairways — Hidden Lies” is a murder mystery set on the PGA tour and has been enjoyed by golfers of every ability. For more information call 207-967-0626.

KENNEBUNK Free shuttle service will be running this weekend between the Chamber of Commerce on Water Street and Village Marketplace in Lower Village for Prelude festivities both weekends. Shuttle hours are 4-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6 and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7. Kennebunk Rec buses will run between the two stops on a 30minute loop, picking up and dropping off on the top and bottom of every hour. This service offered by Kennebunk Rec and the KKA Chamber of Commerce is free and in lieu of fares, donations will be collected for Ben’s Fight,

which supports local families affected by cancer. Shuttle hours for Prelude’s second weekend, Dec. 13-14, will be 4-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For information, visit www.gokennebunks.com. For Prelude calendar of events, visit www.christmasprelude.com.

After a twenty-seven year tenure at Portsmouth’s Button Factory, Carlisle relocated his studio to a converted six-car garage in the fall of 2010. This will be the third time he has hosted an exhibition of his work there. Carlisle’s wacky collages always made his third floor studio at the Button Factory Open House a popular destination. On display will be new oils sketches, collages and re-purposed PaintBy-Number paintings, along with acrylics, watercolors and prints. We have a great time, and our audiences love the style of our music. It’s uplifting, and people walk out feeling much better than when they came in. Familes now make it an annual tradition to come to our shows.” Songs will range from “roots” versions of familiar tunes such as “White Christmas” and an Aretha Franklininspired arrangement of “Joy to the World,” to the less familiar but no less inspiring “Rise Up Shepherd and Follow.” In contrast to the high-energy sound are introspective carols such as a Temptations-inspired arrangement of “Silent Night” and John Lennon’s “Happy Christ-

Ogunquit Chamber Premieres New Logo at Annual Meeting OGUNQUIT In its invitation to its annual meeting, the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce promised the unveiling of the first of many new ideas and delivered on that promise with the premiere of a new logo. “Our Chamber board is dedicated to listening to the needs of our members and our community. We are excited about the new employee team we have, and the unveiling of the new logo defines a new look, and an energized and committed Ogunquit Chamber as a whole,” announced new board chairperson, Scott Vogel, owner of the Front Porch Piano Bar & Restaurant. “Our new logo is clean and contemporary,” added marketing committee chairperson, Brian Crawford, manager of corporate partnerships at the Ogunquit Playhouse. “Our marketing committee shared this with people in a variety of different age groups and target audiences to ensure that it dynamically represented Ogunquit to the full range of residents and potential guests.” Vogel introduced newly hired executive director Alice Pearce, who most recently served as executive director of NH Made, and prior to that, president of Ski New Hampshire. She shared some initial program ideas for the year and presented the Chamber employee team: new operations assistant Dawn Burns, administrative assistant Torri Jandebeur, and event coordinator Julie Twombly. Vogel also presented the 2020 board of directors of the Ogunquit Chamber. In addition to Vogel’s election as chairperson, the Ogunquit Chamber has a new vice chairperson and secretary. Lisa Aubin, vice president & branch manager of Kennebunk Savings Bank in Ogunquit was approved for the vice chair position. Carole Aaron, an Ogunquit resident and political media consultant, was elected as secretary. Rounding out the executive committee is re-elected treasurer, Kirk Lavoie, owner and innkeeper at the Ogunquit Inn. Ogunquit Rotarian and recent American Red Cross retiree, Kerry Ellen Enright, rejoins the board for a new threeyear term after taking some time off for other community activities. Rounding out the board of

directors is Shari Hanson, restaurant manager/owner of Raspberri’s Restaurant at the Gorges Grant Hotel; Joanie Monteith, assistant vice president & branch manager of Bangor Savings Bank in Ogunquit; Brian Crawford, manager of corporate partnerships at the Ogunquit Playhouse; Gary Latulippe, owner of Studio East Motel & Sea Chambers; and Dole Phiri, owner of the Lighthouse Inn & Carriage House. The annual meeting was also an opportunity to recognize a long-time member who is retiring from the board. Carol Brennan, publisher and owner of the

Weekly Sentinel, has served on the board for the past nine years. Her contributions continue to be appreciated and her direct involvement will be missed. Clay Hill Farm hosted the annual meeting and provided two $25 gift certificates as door prizes for attendees. The Front Porch also provided two $25 gift certificates, and the Ogunquit Playhouse donated a pair of tickets for an upcoming 2020 performance of the winner’s choice. Maine Non-Profits Benefit from Bank Employee Wellness Challenge STATEWIDE Each year, Norway Savings Bank employees participate in a Wellness Challenge in an effort to encourage healthy eating, exercise and other positive behaviors. This year’s challenge revolved around improving daily exercise habits with 94% of employees participating. The prize for the top two teams and individuals was a donation of $250 and $100 respectively to the non-profit of their choice. The non-profits receiving donations were: Travis Mills Foundation ($250) – The Travis Mills Foundation benefits and assists post9/11 veterans who have been injured in active duty or as a result of their service to the nation. Veterans and their families are invited for an all-expenses paid vacation to Maine to participate in adaptive activities, bond with other veteran families and enjoy much-needed rest and relaxation in Maine’s great outdoors. Ronald McDonald House Charities of Maine ($250) – Ronald McDonald House is a place for families to call home

when they have a child undergoing treatment at one of Portland’s hospitals. Maine Children’s Cancer Center ($100) – Using worldclass diagnostic and treatment tools, Maine Children’s Cancer Center provides a wide range of services to kids with cancer and blood diseases and their families. The Center, Kennebunk ($100) – The Center is a meeting place for adults 50 and older to explore their interests through engaging programs, social connection, and to make a difference through volunteer opportunities that strengthen the community. “We believe in healthy competition,” said Richelle Wallace, Senior Vice President and Senior Resources Officer at Norway Savings Bank. “This year’s six-week wellness challenge encouraged teams and individuals to increase exercise and form more healthy behaviors. With 94% of the employee base participating, we were able to impact the exercise habits of 252 people. Being able to donate $700 to these worthy organizations was the icing on the cake!”

School Restoration Now Complete

KENNEBUNKPORT Luverne Preble, who once attended the Town House School, cut the ribbon during the Kennebunkport Historical Society’s official re-opening ceremony at the newly restored property on Tuesday, Oct. 29. Luverne was joined by family members, Society members (including Friends of the Town House School,) and the public to celebrate the complete restoration of the school, which was completed by Gary E. Martin Builders this past August. Afterward, guests were invited to trick-or-treat among the seven building on the North Street property and enjoy some interactive local history. “This is an exciting day for the Kennebunkport Historical Society,” said Executive Administrator Kirsten Camp. “We came close to losing the Town House School. Thanks to Luverne

Preble and the other Friends of the Town House School Committee as well as Gary Martin Builders, it has been beautifully restored. We are thrilled that the School House will once again be a gathering place for the community.” The Town House School opened in 1900, and local children in Grades 1 through 8 were educated there until 1951, when Consolidated School opened. The Society acquired the building in 1955 and it served as their headquarters until 1999. It housed the Society’s archives until 2015, when a building inspection deemed it was unsafe because it had fallen into disrepair. The Friends of the Town House School raised the $450,000 necessary to restore it. The School is being used for Society lectures, events, exhibits and is available for event rentals.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, My Start Menu used to be across the bottom of my front page. For some reason, recently it now shows up top to bottom on the right side of my screen. Can you please tell me how to get it to run at the BOTTOM of the page, instead of the right side of my page? Thank you in advance for helping me get my front page looking like it used to. Sincerely, Carol Dear Carol, Normally, your taskbar is on the bottom of your desktop, but you can customize it to be on any side of the screen. You can move the taskbar by dragging it to any side of your desktop, but an easier way is to follow these directions: 1. Right-click on a blank spot on the taskbar. 2. Click on “Taskbar Settings” in the context menu. 3. The Taskbar Settings window will open. 4. Find the drop-down list for “Taskbar location on screen: and select your desired position (bottom, left, right, or top) 5. Click the “OK” button at the bottom of the dialog box (if there is one) to save your changes and close the dialog box. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I bought a Windows 10 Dell computer last September and had techs set it up. So I

thought I had Panda Anti-virus. Then when it ran out I bought the latest version of Panda and I could not install it. So I called the Panda Company and according to their tech, I found out that my computer was in terrible shape with over 55,000 errors. So they said they had a partnership with Advanced Tech Support and I turned over the computer to them and for $250 they fixed everything. However I was told to call a number and the gal said we needed Malware protection which started at $500 until I yelled and came down to another $250. I have no idea if that is really necessary for two old people who only use online for email and to surf the net (also buying). Thank you for your wonderful column and help. Sincerely, Carol Dear Carol, It sounds like you have been the victim of a scammer. I am going to guess that when you looked up the phone number for the Panda company, you went online and searched for Panda tech support, and dialed the number you found as a result of that search. The only problem with searching online for tech support numbers is that anyone can make a website that looks like a certain company and put their phone number on it. Then, when you or I call looking for support, they start out making you think they are from the

company, but quickly try to convince you that you need to pay them large amounts of money to remove problems that you really don’t have in the first place. What can you do now? There are really two problems that need to be resolved, first is that you gave your credit card information to scammers. Contact your bank or credit card company and explain the situation. Hopefully, you will be able to reverse the charges, and you will probably need to get a new card. The second problem is that your computer has been compromised. When you let them take over your computer, it was like giving them access to every document, user name and password stored on your computer. As if that wasn’t bad enough, there is no way to be sure that they didn’t install additional tracking software while they were pretending to remove the problems that didn’t really exist. You will probably need to take your computer to a local repair shop that you can trust, and have them go over your computer. They should be able to clean out your computer and set up protection for far less than what you thought you were paying to the scammers. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us; especially those of us up in years

who have trouble with many concepts of computing! My question is this: My hard drive failed on my Dell computer, Windows 7, but I had backed up all my files on a WD external hard drive. When I try to transfer those files to my new computer, Windows 10, I cannot. When I try I am asked which app I wish to use. Of course, I have no idea what app to use. Is there a way to run the .bkf files to recover my data? Thanks in advance for your help, Thomas Dear Thomas, Yes, there is a way to run those files, all you need is the original program that you used to back them up. A quick search for the .bkf file format only showed a backup program that came with Windows XP, which doesn’t sound like your situation. A possible solution would be to try a program called, NTBackup available from Microsoft. It is possible that you used the Western digital software that came on your external hard drive, if that is the case, you will need to install that backup program on your new computer and then recover your files. This is one of the reasons that I like to use a commercial backup program like Acronis True Image. You only need to install the same backup software

WS

on your new computer in order to be able to restore the files. This is also the reason that I backup files for my customers manually, the files are not encrypted in a backup file, instead they are in folders and accessible just like they would be on your computer. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, Thank you for all of your kind, clear answers in your column! I have one more: I would like to use a cloud back-up system for my files and photos and audio recordings, but I am not sure how to select one that would work in my situation. I use two PC laptops for my work, a larger one and a smaller, more portable one, both with Windows 10. I save files identically to both computers by a rather laborious process: When I edit File A on one computer, I save it manually to a folder on Dropbox, from which, the next time I use the other computer, I copy it into the other computer, overwriting the older version of File A. I then delete File A from Dropbox so I won’t be confused. In effect, each computer acts as the back-up for the other now. I would like to have an automatic cloud back-up as well, for greater security. But I don’t know how to use the cloud systems and still keep downloaded up-to-date copies of each file on each comSee COMPUTER page 35...

Two Local Non-Profits Receive $1,000 in Community Spirit Grants KENNEBUNK Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation announced that two Kennebunk non-profit organizations were awarded a total of $1,000 from the Foundation’s Community Spirit 9/11 Mini-Grant program. The organizations receiving funds are: Animal Welfare Society, Inc., West Kennebunk ($500) and The New School, Kennebunk ($500). To commemorate those Harvard Pilgrim members who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, Harvard Pilgrim and the Foundation created the Community Spirit 9/11 Mini-Grant program. This program allows each Harvard Pilgrim employee to award a $500 grant, completely funded by the Foundation, to the local charity of his or her choice each calendar year. Since this community grants program

began in 2002, Harvard Pilgrim employees have directed more than $6.5 million to thousands of organizations throughout Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. “We are so fortunate to have generous and dedicated employees who enrich our company and the communities in which we all live and work,” said Karen Voci, President of the Harvard Pilgrim Foundation. “The MiniGrant program is a wonderful way to support our employees as philanthropists and to help them make an impact in their own cities and towns.” In 2018, 96% of Harvard Pilgrim employees participated in at least one form of service or giving through volunteering, the Mini-Grants program, or Harvard Pilgrim’s annual Employee Fundraising Campaign.

~ News ~ Wells Elementary School Recognizes “Core Value” Champs WELLS On November 15, Wells Elementary School held its first Breakfast of Champions event for the 2019-20 school year. At that time, 24 first through fourth-grade students were recognized for demonstrating one or more of the school’s core

values of honesty, responsibility, respect, and compassion. In alphabetical order, students selected were: Blake Barker, Halle Bohn, Nia Borberg, Jordyn Chadbourne, Mason Colbeth, Michael Colbeth, Joshua Corbett, Colin Cournoyer, Logan Desper,

Molly Firmin, Antwan Green, Annaliese Latulippe, Hannah Levy, Cameron Lucey, Lucas Madsen, Liam Moody, Riley Pendergast, Tim Perry, Robert Roche, Rusty Rousseau, Jasper Roy, Michael Sargent, Levi Soucie-Libby, and Joshua Tarabia. According to WES Principal April Noble, any WES

staff member observing a student who often employs one or more of the school’s core values in interaction with others can select that student to attend the breakfast and be recognized for their accomplishment. One can also be nominated for even one “above and beyond” instance of employing a core value.

After she calls each nominee to the stage, Principal Noble reads aloud why that student was selected from a statement written by the staff member who nominated them. Then, before they leave the stage for a group photo, honorees are presented with a Certificate of Achievement by WES Assistant Principal Theresa Curran.

For example, a message from a Camp Pendleton family read, “Thank you for our beautiful Christmas tree! We weren’t sure what we were going to do this year… Trees for Troops was an answer to our prayers.” Anyone can help support Trees for Troops by making a tax-deductible donation at Great Works Christmas Tree Farm, and they will match your donation, or donate can be made online at www.treesfortroops.org. Great Works Christmas Tree Farm, 392 Oak Woods Road, North Berwick, planted

their first trees in 2010 and are now in their third year cutting trees with thousands of 6-10 foot trees available. John and Linda Archambault wanted to create a farm where families can gather, step away from daily routines while enjoying the fresh sent of 16,000 Christmas trees in one location. At the farm visitors can choose and cut their tree, enjoy the warmth and comfort of the large selection of antiques, Christmas ornaments, hot beverages and apple cider donuts in the cozy Christmas barn. There are also animals to visit and a kid’s play area. Visitors are encouraged to bring cameras as the beautifully decorated old farm buildings and yard provides many festive photo spots. The farm is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday through December 15.

Health & Fitness #GiveWithMeaning by Supporting Red Cross Services STATEWIDE As a year of disasters affecting thousands of people draws to a close, the American Red Cross of Maine asks the public to help provide hope and relief in future crises by donating at redcross.org/gift throughout the holiday season. “Every eight minutes, someone affected by a disaster in our country turns to the Red Cross for support,” said Neela Mukherjee Lockel, interim CEO of the Maine Region of the American Red Cross. “When people’s lives are upended by

home fires, flooding, severe storms and other crises, your support through our Holiday Campaign can provide necessities like emergency shelter, hot meals and blankets.” This year, Red Cross volunteers have helped families affected by large events like wildfires in California, Hurricane Dorian in the Southeast, tropical storm flooding in Texas, and tornadoes and floods in the Midwest. On average, the Red Cross responds to a new major disaster every 14 days in the United States. That’s in addition to the tens of thousands of

Red Cross responses to smaller local disasters like home fires. So far in 2019, Maine Red Crossers have deployed 67 times to major out-of-state disasters. Each year, they also respond to about 300 home fires, helping to meet people’s urgent needs like lodging, food and clothing and providing emotional support and casework services. People can #GiveWithMeaning throughout the holiday season by donating at redcross. org/gift:

Health & Fitness Five Weight Loss Myths Debunked

Successful weight loss requires hard work and patience. Still, many myths abound, and people may think there are quick fixes to shedding a few extra pounds. Debunking some of those myths can help people adopt more realistic weight loss strategies. Myth #1: Avoid carbs to lose weight. A healthy diet is comprised of a mix of foods that include carbohydrates. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans indicate that carbohydrates, such as those found in vegetables, fruits and whole grains, are a foundation of healthy eating. Carbs also provide much-needed fiber. Myth #2: You can target specific fat loss. Exercising and eating healthy can produce overall weight loss and diminish fat concentrations in certain parts of the body, indicates the healthy

eating source Eat This, Not That. But each body is unique, and where people lose fat varies. Gender is one factor that can affect people’s figures. Exercise can tone muscles in key areas to help make a person appear thinner in those regions, but it will not necessarily make fat go away in one place over another. Myth #3: Eating fat makes you fat. Fat is very calorie-dense and common in junk foods, which is why it can get a bad rap. However, as long as calorie intake is within a healthy range - even if some calories are from fat - weight gain will not occur from fat alone, says Healthline. The body needs healthy fats to function properly. Myth #4: Crash diets will make weight fall off. Dramatically cutting calories can lead to nutritional deficiencies and have an adverse effect on weight loss. The body may slow its rate of metabolism to conserve calories, as a crash diet may fool your body into thinking you are

starving. It’s better to stick to a gradual decrease in calories while still consuming the daily recommended amounts based on your age and other factors. Myth #5: Tons of exercise will make the pounds disappear. Research has repeatedly indicated that exercise can help boost weight loss. However, the real way to shed pounds is primarily linked to diet. According to Shawn M. Talbott, Ph.D., a nutritional biochemist and former director of the University of Utah Nutrition Clinic, weight loss is generally 75 percent diet and 25 percent exercise. People see the biggest short-term results when they eat smart. If losing weight is your New Year’s resolution, get the facts before adopting a weight loss regimen.

...GIVE from page 17 Help disaster victims: A gift of $50 can deliver hot meals for five people or provide blankets for 10 people after a disaster, or a larger donation of $100 can provide a family of two with a full day’s worth of emergency shelter, including meals, snacks, blankets, cots and hygiene supplies. Help military members and veterans: Meanwhile, a donation of $50 can help connect veterans and their families to critical community services, such as food, housing, mental health support and rehabilitation. A larger gift of $145 can provide hospital kits, filled with toiletries and other essentials, for 20 service members. - Help save lives internationally: People can also help save lives through our work with the Measles & Rubella Initiative, which provides vaccinations for children and educates families about the dangers of measles and rubella. A gift of $100 can help provide lifesaving vaccinations for 100 children facing an increased risk of measles and rubella around the world. The holidays are a difficult time to collect blood because of busy schedules and inclement weather. Still, the need for blood is constant to help accident victims, cancer patients and others who rely on lifesaving blood products every day. Make an appointment to donate blood or platelets by visiting redcrossblood.org. Health & Fitness What is Occupational Wellness? Wellness is a broad term that can refer to various aspects of daily life. Disciplines like yoga and meditation might be the first things to come to mind when people think of wellness, but focusing on wellness at work can have positive, lasting effects on overall well-being as well. Occupational wellness is not necessarily a familiar term, but it’s something that most professionals strive for. According to the Student Health and Counseling Services at the University of California, Davis, occupational wellness inspires people to find work from which they will gain personal satisfaction and find enrichment. Occupational wellness promotes the exploration of various career options and the pursuit of those opportunities that most appeal to each individual. While it may seem like common sense to aspire for an engaging, enjoyable career, the effect that finding such a career can have on overall well-being might not be so apparent. In an analysis of a recent Gallup World Poll, a survey that asks

hundreds of thousands of workers across the globe about their jobs and their job satisfaction, Harvard Business Review found there is a correlation between job satisfaction and life evaluations. People who report being satisfied with their jobs seem to be happier overall. So how can one embrace the concept of occupational wellness? UC Davis offers individuals the following suggestions as they begin their journeys to occupational wellness. Perform some self-reflection. Reflect on yourself and what you need out of a job. Are there certain occupational tasks you enjoy? Are there some you find burdensome? Identifying those you enjoy and those you feel are onerous can help you narrow down your options to careers you will find engaging and rewarding. Consider unpaid work and volunteer opportunities. Even though they don’t pay, unpaid work and volunteer opportunities can still enrich your life and provide personal satisfaction. Such opportunities should not be overlooked.

WDH19502-Portsmouth-WeeklySentinel_PRINTAds_10x7-FINAL-OL.indd 7

Practice open communication and proper conflict management with colleagues. Negative working environments can be stressful, leading to dissatisfac-

tion on the job. Openly communicating with colleagues and resolving conflicts in a proper, professional way can foster a positive working environment, po-

tentially contributing to greater job satisfaction. Prioritizing occupational wellness can help people live happier, more fulfilling lives.

IRAs are retirement investment vehicles that can be used in place of or in conjunction with 401(k) plans. Many investors like IRAs because they give them a certain measure of choice in regard to their investments while allowing investors to postpone paying taxes on gains until money is withdrawn during retirement.

One common misconception about IRAs is that there are only two types, when there actually are many more. Depending on which definitions and resources you go by, there are as many as 11 types of IRAs. Financial advisors can help people choose the appropriate IRA based on their needs and goals. Here’s a look at just a few of the more popular IRAs. Traditional IRA Traditional IRAs are very popular, according to data from the Investment Company Insti-

tute. Classic features include a tax break of up to $6,000 initially, and investment earnings are not taxed as long as the money remains in the account. Money Management International says one advantage of a traditional IRA is that contributions can be taken as tax deductions in the tax year they are made. This type of IRA might be good for someone who anticipates being in a lower tax bracket upon retiring, since taxes are paid when funds are withdrawn. Roth IRA A Roth IRA is different than a traditional IRA in various ways. Contributions to a Roth IRA are not tax-deductible, but funds will grow taxfree. Also, with a Roth IRA, the taxes are paid upfront, so account holders will not pay taxes when the money is withdrawn. This is beneficial for those who expect their income tax bracket to rise after retirement. SEP IRA This type of IRA is a traditional IRA, but one set up and funded for employees by an employer. SEP stands for simplified employee pension. Employers must contribute equally

to all employee accounts, and personal contribution limits are much higher for these accounts than on other tax-favored accounts. Spousal IRA The financial resource The Motley Fool notes that spousal IRAs are either traditional or Roth IRAs funded by a married taxpayer in the name of his or her spouse who has less than $2,000 in annual compensation. The couple must file a joint tax

Education IRA (EIRA) Not all IRAs are strictly for retirement funds. EIRAs help pay for higher education. ~ Where To Dine ~ How To Diet in the Holidays – Eat It All By Jim Fabiano Since the early part of this year I have been trying to lose weight and to keep off whatever weight I have lost. This is mostly because my wife has always retained her perfect weight and I do not care to represent a local version of Beauty and the Beast. But, the holiday season represents a particular kind of dieter’s hell in that the most incredible types of food are thrust in one’s face. At any other time of year, work represents a time and place where one can stay on a low calorie diet that includes dry turkey sandwiches on a bun which have more air in them then bread. On a good day it includes a bag of “Pirates’ Booty” that looks and tastes like the kind of packaging you would use to protect something that has to be mailed. I still bring this same lunch with me every day but during the holidays, as soon as I arrive at work, I am bombarded by every type of goodie made for and by mankind.

The teachers’ room is filled with cakes, candy, and colored morsels I can’t categorize. The people who bring in this food make it harder by coaxing people into trying what they must have spent hours producing. If I ever make the statement: “No thank you” I am condemned to cold stares for the rest of the New Year. Another problem with this time of year is that my wonderful and talented wife makes sugar coated cashews, pecans and peanuts to give out to friends and family. She also makes her own brittle that overwhelms any other type of confection to be found in the stores. The scent of my house during this time of year keeps me in a perpetual state of salivation. It is so rich that I swear all I have to do is inhale deeply and I put on a couple of pounds. When I finally surrender to my cravings I am reminded that one sugar coated nut is too much and all the sugar coated nuts in the world are not enough. The holiday season is

also a time when many people come over to visit. It is one of the reasons I actually enjoy this time of year. But, because of the holiday, they always bring something else to eat – and it is never diet foods. The foods they bring are filled with more calories than the entire population of Slovenia could imbibe in an entire month. Like my colleagues at school if I would ever dare not to enjoy what they bring I would never see these people again. Not that this would be a bad thing for some of my relatives but that is another story. Presents are usually something that you can eat. Chocolate is a favorite. Especially Christmas chocolate. The kind of chocolate that oozes with oils and melts in your mouth to coat your insides with sugars that will soon be synthesized into fat. Spirits are another favorite gift this time of year. This is not a bad thing unless you consider that low calorie wines and cordials do not exist. In fact, the

only alcohol I can think of that does not put on weight is rubbing alcohol. Festive drinks are invariably thick with sugar and taste like liquid milkshakes and melted candy. One can’t taste the alcohol but one can definitely feel what it does to you the next day. And yes, I have to confess, egg nog is just one of my weaknesses. Not just regular egg nog. It has to be filled with brandy or rum. It is the only concoction I know that you can watch inflate your love handles the minute it reaches your stomach. Parties and dinners are held throughout the holiday season. As soon as Thanksgiving is over one has little time to lose any added bulk before the capacity to acquire new bulk is ringing the doorbell. There are Christmas shopping parties, office parties, let’s-visit-ourrelatives-that-we-haven’t-seenin-a-year-and-eat-more-of-theirfood, parties, Christmas week parties, Christmas Eve parties, Christmas Day parties, Christmas leftover parties. Christmas is over by barely a microsecond when the

WS

cycle begins again immediately with New Years celebrations. These come on quick and are culminated by the grandfather of all parties at the turn of the New Year. This is the most difficult of all eating frenzies of the past few weeks. This Fellini style banquet not only includes leftovers from the previous week but also has new and even more addictive foods produced from the kitchens of people who consider it a challenge to see whose dish will be devoured first. Of course, being the husband of one of the competitors, or I should say combatants, I quickly overload my dish with my wife’s creations of highly calorific foods of the Gods. But, since we are a close family I am also committed to trying all of the other foods and desserts that fill the table. By 10:00 everyone at the party is usually so filled with food and beverage that the possibility of staying awake for the new year is the same as seeing a waist size of 32 again. In fact, the last time I was awake during the crowning of a New Year was sometime during the Nixon administration.

Joanne Elizabeth Ferguson, 56 ELIOT – Joanne Elizabeth Ferguson died on Friday, November 22, 2019 after a relentless battle with cancer. Born on December 27, 1962 in Nashua, NH, Joanne was raised in Manchester, NH.

Advent Retreat for High School Teens in Kennebunk KENNEBUNK An Advent retreat for young men (ages 14-18) will be held at the Franciscan Guest House in Kennebunk from December 13-15. “This is a weekend of prayer and community that emphasizes the theme of hope rooted in the promises of Jesus,” said Fr. Seamus Griesbach, vocations director for the Diocese of Portland. Fr. Griesbach and area

priests will serve as the hosts of the weekend that is designed to help young people who are serious about their faith and discerning a possible call to religious life. Participants will arrive at the Franciscan Guest House, located on 26 Beach Avenue in Kennebunk, on Friday, December 13, at 5 p.m., with departure set for Sunday, December 15, at 12:45 p.m. For more information about the retreat, contact

Fr. Griesbach at 207-321-7805 or seamus.griesbach@portlanddiocese.org. For more information about discerning a vocation, visit www.portlanddiocese.org/ vocations. The website features a variety of helpful resources including information about the life of a priest in Maine, the path to the priesthood, the history of the presbyterate in Maine, vocation stories, and answers to frequently asked questions.

Joanne spent most of her adult work life at nonprofit organizations in the Seacoast area, in administrative and fundraising roles. She was most proud of her contribution to establishing Fair Tide, a nonprofit in Kittery that provides long-term solutions for homeless individuals and families. In 2018 due to side effects of her cancer treatment, she reluctantly retired as the Parish Administrator at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth in order to spend the rest of her life being connected to those most important to her. Joanne’s family includes her husband Jeff Tavares of Eliot; son Kyle Ferguson of Greenfield, MA; siblings Sandra Ferguson of Beasley, TX, Kathryn Strand of Seal Harbor, and Rich Ferguson of South Berwick, along with several nieces and nephews. Her parents are Judith Ferguson Kimball of Kittery and Richard Ferguson of Manchester, NH.

A celebration of Joanne’s life will be held at St. John’s Church, 101 Chapel Street, Portsmouth, NH, on Saturday, December 7 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joanne’s honor may be made to Fair Tide at www.fairtide.org, St. John’s Episcopal Church at www.stjohnsnh.org, or the Seacoast Cancer Center at WentworthDouglass Hospital at www.wdhospital.org/wdhf. Care of the Ferguson family has been entrusted to J.S.Pelkey and Son Funeral Home. • • • • • • • • • •

(Jim Emerson), Sean (Alaina), Randi, Tim, and Christina; grandfather to Brady; brother to Pris LeBlanc, Jackie Wood, Roger LeBlanc (Frannie), and Charlene (Roy Theriault). Ron also leaves behind a large and loving family and cherished friends. He was predeceased by his parents Clifford and Florence, and his brother Bob. Born on September 5, 1952 in Biddeford, he attended St Lewis High School. Ron was a skilled welder at Saco Defense, Genest Concrete, and The Baker Company. He continued to live in Southern Maine, where he loved playing softball with his friends, golfing with his wife, and watching his children play their own sports as they grew up. He never missed a chance to make a new friend, make someone laugh, or enjoy a good conversation. Ron’s humor and dedication to his family will always be remembered fondly by those who were fortunate to get to know him. He will be greatly missed. A celebration of life was held on Saturday, November 30 at the Ramada Inn at 377 North Street, Saco. If you would like to express your sympathy in memory of Ron, please donate to the Sam L Cohen Center, 30 Barra Road, Biddeford, or at www.smaaa.org.

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Friskie’s person died and for several years, she simply hid out in the basement and lived a life of loneliness without him. Eventually the family surrendered Friskie to Safe Haven. She was sad, unhappy, and withdrawn when she first arrived. But after a few months at our adoption center, she’s found that life is worth living after all, and can even be lots of fun! Friskie is a very beautiful black and white tuxedo kitty with an adorable pink nose. Thanks to our dedicated volunteer socializers, Friskie learned to relax, to trust, to be confident and most important, be happy! She’s now an expert at laser toy games, and cherishes a good backrub. This wonderful kitty is ready for her forever home. She’ll bloom even more in a quiet home with gentle people who will show her the love she craves. Please call 207-646-1611 and schedule a time to meet Friskie. As you probably know, our Adoption Center has been closed for weeks and we still aren’t sure when we can reopen. Still, our volunteers are working hard, caring for our kitties and treating those who need medication. If you wish to adopt, make an appointment by calling and leaving a message. Despite being closed, we’re thrilled about some very special adoptions we’ve made. Midnight, a 19-year old kitty who was the gentle little lady of our lobby and kitchen, has been adopted in our assisted adoption program to a family in NH who are very committed and thrilled to bring her into their home. Midnight’s medical care will continue to be paid for by Safe Haven, but she will be their kitty and enjoy all the benefits of being a family

member. Another special kitty from our assisted adoption program, 19-year old Pumpkin, left the shelter this week and will be living with a kind gentleman and a big happy dog. We’re thrilled to see our older kitties find great homes. As director of Safe Haven I wish to extend a special thankyou to our volunteers who have been working so hard cleaning, medicating and staying committed to our organization and mission, during this difficult time. Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK We’re kicking off our “Home For The Holidays” campaign to try to get as many of our Rescue Kitties homes in time for the holiday and 2020 year ahead. Our motto “Every Animal Deserves Another Chance...” is so true and no kitty should only know the love of our rescue volunteers who make their time as wonderful as they can. Every one of our kitties deserves a home of their own where they can know they’re safe, valued and cherished. We have MANY kittens who will make their rescue debut straight from foster homes to specially planned events, along with some kittens, young adult cats around 1-3 yrs of age and additional older, more mature cats and “elderfurs” who are already at our rescue and seeking their furever families. Give them the gift that keeps giving long beyond

nesses and supporters. The event culminates with each tree and wreath going home with a new family, just like Lucky Pup Rescue’s mission of matching dogs in need with their forever families. In addition to the magical Adopt-a-Tree festival, there is a full array of activities and events for locals and visitors to enjoy. This year’s activities will also include Pet Pictures with Santa Paws/Claus, decorating Gingerbread Dogs, Holiday Face Painting, Ornament Making, and a Hot Cocoa and Cider Station. Lucky Pup will offer educational opportunities through their “Awareness Station” which will feature adoptable dogs, success stories, and opportunities to sponsor a holiday gift for a Lucky Pup in foster care. There are also opportunities for shopping for the pet lover in your life, including a new commemorative ornament celebrating this year’s event.

Lucky Pup Rescue President Sue Richardson said, “The Adopt-a-Tree Festival is magical and it’s a wonderful representation of how businesses and residents work together to support our organization. We are excited to expand the festival again this year at Vinegar Hill with the Santa Paws Fest. There are activities for all to enjoy and great opportunities to support Lucky Pup Rescue. The Santa Paws Fest and Adopt-a-Tree Festival (AATF) support Lucky Pup Rescue, a local non-profit all-breed dog rescue. All proceeds will be used directly for the care of the dogs who are in foster care with the rescue. Lucky Pup Rescue, Inc is a 501c3 non-profit organization. Vinegar Hill Music Theatre is located at 53 Old Post Road in Arundel. For more information, email luckypuprescue@yahoo. com or manager@Vinegarhillmusictheatre.com.

...HOURS from page 22

Denise Louise Sopchyk, 69 WELLS – Denise Louise Sopchyk died November 24, 2019 in the loving care of her sister, Diane Kovacic, and dear friend, Barbara LeBlanc. Denise was born March 5, 1950 in Chicago, IL, a daughter of George and Bernadine (Ernst) Kovacic. She graduated from Niles North High School in Skokie, IL. Denise enjoyed people and worked in retail for many years, most recently in Kittery at Hanna Andersson. Denise also owned and operated the Captain’s Quarters Motel in Ogunquit for many years. Denise loved animals and volunteered at the Animal Welfare Society in Kennebunk. She fostered many animals for them over the years and would help in fund raising for the agency.

She was an avid bird watcher and enjoyed feeding them. She was also active in the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce and volunteered for them as well. She enjoyed attending plays at the Ogunquit Playhouse. She enjoyed cooking and dining with friends. Denise is lovingly remembered by her sister, Diane Kovacic; her half-sister, Janet Jacobson; and many friends, including Barbara LeBlanc. Services will be private. Should friends desire, dona-

sioner Saul said. “The hiring of a thousand new employees to provide service through our National 800 Number and an additional 100 hires to process people’s Social Security benefits at our processing centers around the country are steps in the right direction in our mission to greatly improve the service we provide.” Currently, a field office is generally open to the public from 9 a.m. to Noon on Wednesdays. tions in her memory may be made to: Animal Welfare Society, PO Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094. To share a memory or leave a message of condolence, please visit Denise’s Book of Memories Page at www.bibberfuneral.com. Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk.

Beginning on January 8, 2020, offices will remain open until 4 p.m. on Wednesdays, with typical field office hours from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. While the agency continues to improve both the access to and the experience with its services, it is important to note that most Social Security services do not require the public to take time to visit an office. People may create a my Social Security account, a personalized online service, at www.socialsecurity. gov/myaccount. Through their personal my Social Security account, people can check personal information and conduct business with Social Security. If they already receive Social Security benefits, they can start or change direct deposit online, and if they need proof of their benefits, they can print or download a current Benefit Verification Letter from their account. People not yet receiving

benefits can use their online account to get a personalized Social Security Statement, which provides earnings history information as well as estimates of future benefits. Currently, residents in 40 states and the District of Columbia may request a replacement Social Security card online if they meet certain requirements. The portal also includes a retirement calculator and links to information about other online services, such as applications for retirement, disability, and Medicare benefits. Many Social Security services are also conveniently available by dialing toll-free, 1-800772-1213. People who are deaf or hard of hearing may call Social Security’s TTY number, 1-800325-0778. ...ACAR from page 31 ...COMPUTER from page 15 puter so that I can work with my files offline. I worry that automatic backup systems will confuse me, and that I won’t be able to keep track of whether I am working on the latest version of a particular file. Can you advise me? Thank you, Jo Dear Jo, I was going to suggest that you save your files in a OneDrive folder on your hard drive so they would automatically sync, but when I did a little bit of research on Dropbox, I found that they have the same kind of automatic sync feature. When you install the dropbox desktop application on both computers, and login with the same username on both, any file that you save in the drop-

box folder will automatically be saved and updated in the dropbox folder on the other computer. This actually saves your file in three locations. One on each computer, and one on Dropbox servers. Essentially a built in cloud backup. Dropbox is programmed to check the folder and automatically make sure your files are the same on each device you use. Since you are using Dropbox for your work, I would suggest that you upgrade to the business edition of Dropbox. That will provide you with increased security and file recovery options. SPORTS

Winter Runners Ready for Shipyard Seaside Santa Dash KENNEBUNK The Shipyard Seaside Santa Dash will be running along the

beaches and roads of the Kennebunks on Saturday, December 14 for the 5K Run/Walk, 10K

and Elf Dash. All events will be originating out of LIVE Cafe, 169 Port Road.

Boot camp is approximately eight weeks and all enlistees into the U.S. Navy begin their careers at the command. Training includes physical fitness, seamanship, firearms, firefighting and shipboard damage control along with lessons in Navy heritage and core values, teamwork and discipline. More than 35,000 recruits are trained annually at RTC and begin their Navy careers. Sandler is assigned the rate of intelligence specialist. After graduation, Sandler will

attend Intelligence Specialist “A” School at Dam Neck Naval Base, Virginia Beach, VA. Intelligence Specialists assist in every phase of the planning, collection, processing, analysis, and dissemination of intelligence information. They assemble and analyze multi-source operational intelligence in support of all warfare areas, assist in support of intelligence briefings, reporting, and analytical programs. Submitted by Alan Nunn, Recruit Training Command Public Affairs.

...SHANDLER from page 1 The toughest part of Sandler’s boot camp experience was learning to ask for help. “I have always been the kind of person to complete tasks by myself,” Sandler said. “When I’m confused or unsure about something, I usually tried to figure it out on my own. It took me a few weeks to realize that I have shipmates who can help me. When I struggled with an evolution, my shipmates always had my back to help me through it. I eventually learned that it’s OK to ask for help.”

Packet pick-up is at LIVE Cafe on Friday, December 13, 4-7 p.m. or 7-8:30 p.m. the day of the race. There will also be a Toys for Tots collection taking place and participants are encouraged to please bring a small “unwrapped” toy to contribute. Race Fees and details in-

clude: Shipyard Seaside Santa Dash 5K Run/Walk - Start time 9 a.m. along the beach and back roads of Kennebunk. $35 race fee + $2.50 sign up fee; Seaside Elf Dash - Start time 10 a.m. on the sand of Gooch’s Beach. $10 race fee + $2 sign up fee; Shipyard Seaside Santa Dash 10K - Start time 10 a.m. $35 race fee + $2.50 sign up fee.
