In Memory of George H. W. Bush 1924-2018
“As Americans, we have no more solemn duty than laying a great patriot to rest. In President George H.W. Bush, here lies such a man.” Photo and quote from Speaker Paul Ryan’s Facebook page.
NATIONWIDE George H. W. Bush, 41st president of the United States, died on Friday, November 30 at the age of 94. Long admired by many as a gentleman and statesman who dedicated himself to serving others, tributes and accolades for the man quickly poured in from around the world. A member of what’s often referred to as “the greatest generation”, George H. W. Bush served in World War II as a Navy aviator and was shot down in combat. After the war he attended and graduated from Yale University and then moved to Texas
with his family where he found success in the oil business. Not long after that he became active in politics and won the election to the House of Representative from Texas’s 7th district in 1966. In 1971, then president Nixon appointed him as Ambassador to the United Nations. Under Gerald Ford, Bush was appointed as Chief of the Liaison Office in China and then made Director of Central Intelligence. Bush ran for president in 1980 but was defeated by Ronald Reagan who then chose him as his running mate and eventually his Vice President for his eight-year
tenure. In 1988 Bush ran a successful presidential campaign defeating Michael Dukakis to become the first incumbent vice president in 152 years to be elected president. Following his loss to Bill Clinton in 1992, George H.W. Bush remained active in humanitarian activities, advising his two sons in their political aspirations, spent time at the family compound in Kennebunkport, and even surprised the public when he skydived on his 90th birthday. Sadly, in his final years See BUSH page 4...
Wreaths Across America Continues Honor Veterans STATEWIDE What began as a pilgrimage by a Maine wreath maker in a single truck to deliver 5,000 wreaths he donated to Arlington National Cemetery in 1992 has become a recognized volunteer effort that honors and recognizes all veterans from the Revolutionary War to present.

Today Wreaths Across America (WAA) places over 400,000 wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery, with thousands more at over 150 other cemeteries around the country. WAA also holds a number of special memorial ceremonies beyond, such as at Pearl Harbor, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, PA. This year, they placed nearly 9,500 Maine-made wreaths on the headstones of all U.S. service members laid to rest at Colleville-sur-Mer in Normandy as
well as each of the five D-Day invasion beaches. This is first time WAA has sent veterans’ wreaths to be placed on foreign soil. This year’s National Wreaths Across America Day is December 15. Before then, a convoy of trucks filled with wreaths and escorted by police cars, fire trucks, and Patriot Guard Riders, will drive down through Maine on their way to Arlington National Cemetery. As part of the journey, there will be several local stops along the
way including one at The Kittery Trading Post on Monday, December 10 at 11:30 a.m. The public is invited to come out and
Mark Rouillard NORTH BERWICK How often have we heard the phrase, “necessity is the mother of invention”? This is certainly the case when it comes to the inspiration behind the VertaStretch. From a young age Mark Rouillard, currently a North Berwick resident, had recurring back problems that were initially thought to be nothing more than growing pains. However, through years of increasing pain followed by subsequent injuries and multiple treatments, there was never any genuine improvement. X-rays and MRIs revealed that all
24 vertebrae in his spine were either fractured or had broken. A doctor explained that he was

My surgeon and the neurologist claimed that my back was in the shape of a 60-year-old man and there was nothing they could do for me.” said Rouillard. “I was 26 years old and discouraged, not able to work and with the outlook looking bleak. Kennebunk and Sanford Teens Use Meals to Help Community
KENNEBUNK “It makes you feel good when you are able to give and make a difference in someone’s life in a small way.â€? The words of Jacob Guillemette, a high schooler from St. ThĂŠrèse of Lisieux Parish in Sanford, capture the genuine purpose of the Matthew 25:35 Meals being hosted by teens at both St. ThĂŠrèse of Lisieux Parish and
Holy Spirit Parish in Wells and Kennebunk. On the second Tuesday of each month, the two parish groups come together to prepare and serve dinner to hundreds of community members in need at the St. Ignatius parish hall on 25 Riverside Avenue in Sanford. All are welcome to attend the free dinners with the next event planned for Tuesday, De-

cember 11, 5:30-6:30 p.m. as the teens will serve spaghetti, bread, salad, and dessert. Offering the monthly meals is a way to teach the teens about the importance of service, particularly the Bible verse Matthew 25:35 (“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me...â€?). “My hope for these fantastic teens is that their experience in serving at these meals plants within them a deep desire to always be involved in service,â€? said Carolyn Houston, director of faith formation at Holy Spirit Parish. The dinners, which began in November of 2017, have involved over 30 teens serving upwards of 100 meals per event. “Afterwards we all have supper and help clean up together,â€? said Emma Perrault, a teen from St. ThĂŠrèse of Lisieux.
“I enjoy being with my friends but, at the same time, I am doing something good for others,â€? said Colby White, a teen from Holy Spirit. St. ThĂŠrèse of Lisieux Parish provides the venue, while Holy Spirit Parish supplies the food. “Bakers from both parishes have created beautiful and delicious desserts for the guests each month,â€? added Houston. The meals have been a wonderful opportunity for Catholic teens in Sanford, Kennebunk, and Wells to get to know each other, but that is far from the only reward. “Some people come there for food, some people come for fellowship, and some come just to have meal out. It’s so enjoyable to see,â€? said Henry Kindler, another teen from Holy Spirit. “I enjoy serving the community and seeing the smiles on people faces as they indulge in a

nice hot meal,â€? said Perrault. “It’s very humbling to know that we are helping to serve God’s people,â€? said Tommy Guillemette of St. ThĂŠrèse of Lisieux. “It’s nice to be able to come together with another local youth group and work together for the same cause and have a good time doing it. It’s also rewarding to get to know the people that we are serving every month and to interact with them also.â€? The guests also get more out of the meals than the tasty food. They get to see the present and future of the Church in action. “This service of the teens teaches how to be the Body of Christ and how to see Christ in others,â€? said Houston. “The guests often remark on how joyful, attentive, and helpful the teens are while they are serving meals, cleaning up, and welcoming them.â€? And as the crowds increase in size, so does the collective passion of the teens to serve. “It’s great to see how much it has grown in the last year and to see how appreciative everyone in the community is,â€? said Emma White, a teen from Holy Spirit Parish. “I look forward to continuing it!â€? Berwick Scouts Collecting for Food Pantry and Coats for Kids
BERWICK Scouting for Food/Coats for Kids is hosted by Boy Scout Troop 313, and assisted by Cub Scout Pack 313, and more. These Scouts will be covering neighborhoods in Berwick on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. During this time, scouts will be going door-to-door to collect donations of non-perishable food items such as canned and dry
goods for the Community Food Pantry, which is in dire need of assistance at this time of year. The Scouts would like to thank the Berwick community for the 4191 pounds of food collected in 2017 and would like to match or exceed that for 2018. What we collect lasts only a couple of months so the pantry is counting on us for our help again this year!
For those who will not be home, the Scouts ask them to please leave a bag on the doorstep for pickup. Based on the amount of volunteers, not all the roads may be covered. So if your food donation is not picked up by 1:30 p.m., you can call 603-767-6045 to have someone pick it up or you can drop it off at the Noble Middle School cafeteria entrance (46 Cranberry
Meadow Road) until 3 p.m. on Saturday. Scouts will also be collecting coats, boots, mittens, scarves, hats and other winter clothing items for Coats for Kids and the Community Closet. Donations of winter attire can also
be dropped off at Noble Middle School on Saturday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Remember kids come in all sizes so adult sizes are welcome as well. Thanks again for all your support! For questions, call Boy Scout Troop 313 Committee Member Cliff Schweiger at 603767-6045.
Emergency Management and Preparedness: Are You Ready? ELIOT The Eliot Aging in Place Committee and Baran Place are sponsoring the second in a series of community education opportunities for all Eliot residents. “Emergency Management and Preparedness” will be held at 4 p.m. on December 12 at Baran Place, located at 150 Beech Road, Eliot. Parking is available on-site and attendees should enter the door at the flag pole. Join speaker, Arthur Cleave, Director of York County Emergency Management Agency, to learn more about how to be ready. Emergency management personnel recognize that one of the great-
est challenges is getting citizens to be prepared for an emergency. Mainers are known for their resilience and ability to “tough out “a storm, but there are specific actions all of us should be taking to be fully prepared for any incident. You will learn the hazards in our area, how to sign up to receive alerts and warnings about local emergencies, what to include an emergency kit, and how to create a family communications plan. Did you know that you should text family members during an emergency rather than call? Join us to find out why and to learn more steps on how to be prepared.
...BUSH from page 1 Parkinson’s disease would force him to use a wheelchair or motorized scooter to get around and he would have to endure the loss of this wife, Barbara, in April of 2018 who he had married in 1945. This week, Wednesday, December 5 was designated as a national day of mourning and President Donald Trump has directed that American flags be flown at half-staff for 30 days to honor the memory of former
President George H.W. Bush. In addition to the many career highlights featured by the media when covering the funeral services, it was George Bush’s yellow Labrador service dog, Sully, who gained spotlight attention when photographed lying next to Bush’s casket. It has been reported that Sully will now go back into service to help other veterans and is going to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

~ News ~ For Nearly 25 Years District’s Volunteers Continue to Play Key Role WELLS The Wells-Ogunquit Community School District (WOCSD) has had its current school volunteer program in place since 1994. During that time, several thousand community volunteers and students have worked in one or more of the District’s three schools to fill important teacher, student and overall school needs by performing various tasks ranging from mentoring a small reading group of kindergarteners, coaching junior high students to performing clerical work. Based on need, the majority of these volunteers have worked at Wells Elementary School (WES). “The WES staff are extremely grateful to our volunteers, commented Wells Elementary School Principal April Noble. “Having these teens and
adults in our building enrich connections to the community and teach our children about service learning. “We couldn’t do it without their help! commented WOCSD Superintendent James Daly. “We are truly lucky to have such supportive community members to work with our kids. For nearly 25 years, Community Resource Coordinator Maryanne Foley has coordinated the program. Each year she instructs and places volunteers of varying ages and backgrounds into grades K through Adult Education classrooms or elsewhere. “With the hundreds of volunteers we recruit each year, we are adding man-hour support to students and programs, pointed out Foley who says new volunteers are always welcome.
However, new volunteers first need to register, have a quick security check and attend a one-time, 45-minute training seminar. Volunteers may then decide if they want to work daily or a few times a week and what they would like to do based on the expressed needs of school staff. Supervised assignments could be in a classroom, computer lab, school library, office, on school grounds during an

...VOLUNTEERS from page 5 Volunteers also make up support groups such as the Athletic and Music Boosters. There are times when an elementary teacher can’t cover “all the bases educating their students. An example is in the kindergarten classroom of Marcia Millian where she needs to break her class into groups for individualized math and reading attention. Millian estimates that volunteers provide about 200 combined hours each year with her students. “I have been so lucky to have the support and help of

‘Elf: The Musical’ Celebrates Holiday Spirit in Lively Playhouse Production
By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Writer OGUNQUIT / PORTSMOUTH, N.H There’s a real live Elf spreading holiday cheer this Christmas season. His name is Buddy, and he’s a far-cry from that “elf on a shelf’ impish doll that parents drag out each December to bribe the kids to behave so they’ll end up on Santa’s “nice list” come Christmas Eve. Buddy, of course, is the singing, dancing, rambunctious star of “Elf: The Musical,” produced by the Ogunquit Playhouse and on-stage through December 16 at the Music Hall in downtown Portsmouth. And as
brought to life by the amusing, lithe and limber Steven Booth, he’s reason enough to trek to the seaside city to see the family-friendly show. The musical is based on the 2003 Christmas comedy “Elf” that starred Will Farrell and James Caan. With a score by Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin and a book adapted by Bob Martin and Thomas Meehan, it tells the story of Buddy, a human who was orphaned as a baby. After crawling into Santa’s sack, he’s transported to the North Pole, where he’s raised by the elves and thinks he’s an elf, despite his grown-up body and inability to crank out toys at a

feverish pace. The lively show starts slowly at the North Pole, where Santa, Buddy and a whole passel of elves, including several local kids who look adorable in their elf outfits as they help the adult cast members belt “Happy All the Time,” the cheerful opening number. The pace picks up when Santa (an amiable Blake Hammond) tells Buddy he’s human and that it’s time for him to head to New York to meet Walter Hobbs (an overwrought Christopher Russo), the dad he never knew. Besides Hobbs, an overworked exec with little time for his family, Buddy discovers he’s got a nice step-mom Emily and an engaging half-brother

YORK On Saturday, December 15 from 5 to 7 p.m., the members of First Parish Church, 180 York Street, York Village will present “The Journey to Bethlehem,” the 10th anniversary of its annual gift to the community. Experience the retelling of a familiar story from the comfort of your warm car while driving through a luminaria-lit landscape of seven staged scenes. The story begins with the Angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary that she would bear a son and call him Jesus, followed by Mary and Joseph’s trip to Bethlehem. Along the way, you encounter Caesar Augustus, other travelers, the inn-keeper and a familiar camel. As you join the three wise men following the star, you will hear angels proclaim “Glory to God on the Highest,” and watch shepherds tending their sheep. Just ahead, in a humble stable, the baby Jesus lies in a manger

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Gordon Carlisle Open Studio Exhibition ELIOT Join Eliot artist Gordon Carlisle for an open studio of his artwork on December 7 and 8. A former resident at Portsmouth’s Button Factory, Carlisle relocated his studio to a converted six-car garage in the fall of 2010 and this will be the second time he has hosted an exhibition of his work there. Carlisle’s wacky collages
always made his third floor studio at the Button Factory Open House a popular destination. Known for his humor as well as artistic prowess, his open studio event will showcase a wide variety of artwork. On display will be many new oils, collages and re-purposed Paint-ByNumber paintings, along with acrylics, watercolors and prints. All are priced to sell.
Gordon Carlisle has been actively involved as a visual and theatrical artist on the Seacoast since 1982. A graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, Carlisle was a member of Portsmouth’s Mural Works for ten years before
starting his own mural painting business in 1994. He currently makes his living as a commissioned muralist, painter and illustrator. Now in production is a large landscape painting for the new Waldo Justice Center in Belfast. His studio artwork has been exhibited across the U.S. Gordon Carlisle’s Open

Open House at Heritage Museum OGUNQUIT All are welcome to the Annual Open House at the Ogunquit Heritage Museum during Christmas by the Sea, Saturday, December 8 and Sunday, December 9, 1-4 p.m. It’s the last chance to see the exhibits of 2018. The exhibit on Life Guards, starting with Bette Davis in 1926, got the attention of WCSH out of Portland. They did a segment on it for their show “207. Over 70 lifeguards attended their reunion in June and visited the museum. So many came to see the Arnie Ginsburg display to reminisce, listen to the music, and share the significance he had on them during their teenage years. Ginsburg was awarded Outstanding Citizen in September 2018 by the Town of Ogunquit. The museum was loaned artwork painted by Norman E. West, DeWitt Hardy and George Burk, that you won’t see anywhere else as they are from private collections. They are magnificent and remind us that though the artists themselves are gone, they will live on forever in their work.
The museum is beautifully decorated for the holidays under the direction of Curator, Carole Lee Carroll. Her attention to detail is exquisite including Christmas trees, crèches, menorahs, and more. The museum is located at 86 Obeds Lane, Ogunquit. For more information, call 207-6460296.

Health & Fitness Senate Committee Unanimously Passes Bipartisan Bill to Fight Alzheimer’s
WASHINGTON, DC The Senate Health Committee unanimously passed the Building Our Largest Dementia (BOLD) Infrastructure for Alzheimer’s Act, legislation authored by U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) to create
a public health infrastructure to combat Alzheimer’s disease and preserve brain health. Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (DNV), Shelley Moore Capito (RWV), and Tim Kaine (D-VA) joined Senator Collins in introducing this bipartisan bill.
Senator Collins is a founder and Senate co-chair of the Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer’s Disease. “Alzheimer’s disease is one of the greatest and under-recognized public health threats of our time. Five and a half million

Americans are living with the disease, and that number is soaring as our overall population grows older and lives longer,” said Senator Collins. “After decades of increasing investments in biomedical research for Alzheimer’s, we are ready for the next step: to translate research into practice. The BOLD Act takes a multi-pronged public health approach that would create a modern infrastructure for the prevention, treatment, and care of Alzheimer’s and related dementias.” More than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, and the United States spends more than $277 billion per year, including $186 billion in costs to Medicare and Medicaid. Without further action, the number of Americans with Alzheimer’s is expected to triple to as many as 14 million by 2050, costing the nation more than $1.1 trillion per year. This legislation would apply a public health approach to reduce risk, detect early symptoms, advance care, improve data, and ultimately change the trajectory of this devastating disease. Headed by the Centers of Disease and Prevention (CDC), it would authorize $20 million annually over the next five years to establish: Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias Public Health Centers of Excellence dedicated to promoting effective Alzheimer’s disease and caregiving interventions as well
as educating the public on Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive decline, and brain health. Health & Fitness Court Rules in Favor of Medicaid Expansion PORTLAND The Maine Superior Court ruled that the governor cannot refuse to implement the Medicaid expansion law approved by voters more than one year ago. “The court has handed a huge victory to 70,000 Mainers who have been unfairly denied health care,” said Robyn Merrill, executive director of Maine Equal Justice. “This is also a victory for the Maine voters and for the rule of law. The executive branch has a duty to carry out all the laws, not pick and choose, and today’s ruling holds them accountable.” In her opinion, Justice Michaela Murphy strongly affirmed Gov. Paul LePage’s duty to implement the law. “Although the Governor may believe implementation to be unwise and disagree with the Act as a matter of policy, he may not ignore the will of the people and refuse to take any action toward accomplishing the policy objectives of the Act,” Murphy wrote. In addition, Murphy found that there was nothing preventing the Maine Department of Health and Human Services from funding Medicaid expansion. “The Commissioner can point to nothing in the factual record which supports her position that a lack of available funds prevents her from beginning implementation of the expansion act,” Murphy wrote. Jack Comart, litigation director for Maine Equal Justice said, “This is tremendous
news for anyone who applied for or was terminated from MaineCare on or after July 2 who meets the eligibility requirements for the expansion group. The court now says that these people should receive MaineCare right away, whether or not the federal application for funds has been approved. We see no impediment to Maine receiving that approval, but as the court said, it will not hold up care for people who have already waited a long time.” The court agrees that people became eligible for coverage on July 2. The court has ordered the commissioner to adopt rules to implement Medicaid expansion by Dec. 5 and the rules must ensure that people are enrolled for and eligible to receive MaineCare services as of July 2. The court also found that there are sufficient funds in the Medicaid ac-
Drivers Needed For Road To Recovery
count to enroll these individuals. “The governor’s excuses and obstructionism did not hold water with the courts,” Merrill said. In August, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court ruled against the LePage administration, requiring that the Maine Department of Health and Human Services submit a State Plan Amendment, which is the first step in implementing the expansion law. The ruling also directed the Superior Court to resolve remaining issues in the case, which resulted in today’s ruling. The pro bono legal team in the expansion case was led by James Kilbreth and David Kallin of Drummond Woodsum, and includes Jack Comart and Pat Ende of Maine Equal Justice and Charlie Dingman of PretiFlaherty.

Yes Santa, There is a Virginia
By Jim Fabiano I rounded the mall for the fifth time. Or was it the sixth? This is a tough time of year for people who have no clue how to shop efficiently. The days before the big day were running out so I had to storm the stores to find the perfect gift. I now know in my heart that this concept is a myth. I met some old friends from past lives walking out of Macys. They were all carrying bags of ornately decorated gifts. I discretely hid the small brown paper bag filled with dental floss I had just purchased for my wife’s stocking gift. We exchanged greetings and openly observed how many of us were a lot larger in width and how we all decided to wear hats even though we were in an enclosed mall. The conversation evolved into questions of what we did for a living. When it was my turn I told my friends from the past that I was still a teacher. “How can you stand it?” was asked by one of my oldest friends from college. I had to ask him what he meant? He continued by asking me how I can stand working with the unmotivated
and unruly young students of today. You see my friend used to teach but he opted to go into business instead. Of course, this meant he tripled my salary. This fact also explained why he was carrying more gifts than I had ever hoped to afford. I must have had a queer look on my face because all conversation stalled for the next few minutes. The lapsed time was probably seconds but it seemed like minutes to me. All I could see in my mind’s eye was a large group of high school aged children spending their afternoons collecting, boxing, and labeling food baskets that were to go out the day before Christmas vacation. I remembered groups of these same students collecting old clothes from their neighborhood so that the poor amongst us would not be cold for the upcoming winter months. I saw older and younger students in my school volunteering for programs like Peer Outreach and DARE helping each other fight off the temptations of drugs and alcohol. They were fighting for a better life.
“Why do you continue to teach?” was asked again that interrupted my day-dream-like trance. I answered abruptly by stating that teaching was all I ever wanted to do. I continued by telling him that I work with the most motivated and enthusiastic people I could ever hope to work with. These same people perpetu-
ally work hard trying to become. I, and many like me, feel privileged to be allowed to work with today’s students. It was my friends’ turn to get queer looks on their faces. I don’t think I convinced them of anything. I just surprised them. We bid our adieus and continued on our way. As I walked down
the long halls of the mall a fantasy came to my mind. I imagined myself talking to Santa Claus. I told him not to worry because there still is a Virginia. In fact, there are many of them. Jim Fabiano is a teacher and writer living in York. You can contact him at james.fabiano60@ gmail.com.
try, with low-income and minority persons and those living in outlying communities suffering the most from disparities. Transportation programs are vital for these patients to get the treatments they need and deserve. The Road To Recovery program not only helps patients, it’s also rewarding for the volunteers.” The Road To Recovery program provides transportation options for patients in these situations and currently is in need of volunteer drivers in Maine, especially Cumberland, Kennebe, Penobscot and Aroostook counties. Volunteer drivers donate their time and the use of their vehicles so patients can receive the cancer-related treatments they need. Drivers sometimes
also provide encouragement and support. To volunteer, you must have a valid driver’s license, a safe and reliable vehicle, and proof of automobile insurance. Drivers must be at least 18 years old and have a good driving history. They arrange their own schedules and can commit as many or as few hours or as many hours as their schedule allows. The American Cancer Society provides free training to drivers and conducts criminal background, driving record and vehicle checks. For information about the Road To Recovery program, to volunteer as a driver or to request a ride, call 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org.
...DRIVERS from page 17 to 30 trips to treatment over the course of six weeks. A patient receiving chemotherapy may need weekly treatment for up to a year.” Many cancer patients don’t own a vehicle or can’t afford the extra gasoline. Some patients may be elderly and unable to drive or have no family members or friends who are able to provide regular assistance with transportation. Some patients don’t have access to transportation at all, and public transportation is not ideal for those who are in treatment and who are fatigued, sick, and often at risk of infection. “Even the best treatment can’t work if a patient can’t get there,” said Madore. “Access to care is a big problem in our coun-
Health & Fitness ...INVENT from page 1 fix my own situation.” Rouillard sought advice from his chiropractor because it was the only thing that gave him temporary relief. He suggested that Mark try lying on the top landing of a staircase and allow his feet to hang down the stair treads. He indicated that this position would simulate pelvic traction and give him immediate relief of back pain. The advice was correct and for the first time his pain was under control without
the need for medication. After a couple of months using the stairs, Rouillard decided to design and build a bench to replicate the position. “I added a cross brace as a locking mechanism for traction and grab points for doing passive stretches. This allowed for better body positioning in relation to the angle of the bench. Six months later, I had developed a passive rehabilitation and exercise program that gave me better mobility and I was back on my feet.” The results were so grat-

ifying that he knew this was something that could benefit many others with serious back issues. He applied for a patent on the invention which was granted by the USPTO – and so the VertaStretch was born. Dr. William Meade endorsed and recommended the bench to several of his patients which resulted in the first sales to a major insurance company. “To my surprise, they covered 80% of the cost for its policyholder.” Rouillard said. The word spread about the merits
of the device and benches were purchased by doctors, physical therapists, hospitals, therapy clinics, individuals, and a dance studio. The University of New England even used it for Nordic training purposes! Over time, additional benefits of the product were discovered. “We found that doing shoulder pendulum exercises on the bench improved conditions to treat both shoulders at once with no obstruction. It also worked well for neck injuries.”

The VertaStretch was the first to demonstrate to the medical community the benefits of side lateral flexion with trunk rotation as part of the rehabilitation process. In fact, the product inspired Dwayne Saunders, with the Saunders Group, to develop the 3d Active Trac. This was the most advanced development in years for a chiropractic table. The VertaStretch has even been referred to as a simplified Cox table by several doctors. Dr. James Cox is the leading authority in flexion and distraction. The Cox Technique is the gold standard used by thousands of physicians worldwide for the treatment of back and neck pain. Through 28 years of testing and customer feedback, success has been backed up with medical studies and continued improvements to the product. Mutual MEMIC Mails $22 Million to Maine Employers PORTLAND As a mutual insurance company, MEMIC is owned and governed by the employers who buy workers’ compensation policies from it. Maine Employers’ Mutual Insurance Company (MEMIC) is not a publicly traded company. Its policyholders are like its shareholders, so MEMIC shares its financial success in the form of dividends with the employers across the state that are its customers and owners. “Being a mutual company is at the heart of what MEMIC is all about, said MEMIC President and CEO Michael Bourque. “In fact, ‘mutual’ is our middle name. Being a mutual means we are all in this together. If everyone does their part to make work-
places safer and avoid injuries then we all succeed. Employees, employers and the Maine economy thrives. Since 1998, MEMIC has returned more than $263 million back to policyholders in every one of Maine’s 16 counties. Since MEMIC opened its doors 25 years ago, injuries in Maine have been reduced by more than 40 percent and the cost of workers’ compensation insurance has dropped by 60 percent. “We are so excited to be delivering $22 million worth of dividend checks to more than 17,500 Maine employers this week, said Bourque. Bourque said the company, which has been celebrating its 25th anniversary, has had a great year. It started with being named the top workers’ compensation

Safe Haven Humane Society
WELLS There is no place like home for the holidays, and that’s exactly where Safe Haven wants all of our kitties to be. We don’t believe animals should ever be given as gifts, but we know that families who are prepared and approved by our organization can enjoy a very successful holiday adoption. People who are retired or widowed often find themselves apart from loved ones during the holidays. An animal companion is an ideal cure for loneliness and depression. A quiet, peaceful home is best for a new kitty to settle into, and the rewards of a new loving relationship is so rewarding. Shy kitties, especially, benefit from a quiet home during their transition. Our shy kitties often are ignored at adoption time because out of fear they shrink away and hide. Joe (photo) is beautiful, brown tiger with an adorable face. He was a feral, but he’s come a long way. He’s still reclusive but aches to overcome his fear and relax. Time and again we’ve seen shy, fearful cats blossom once adopted into a home. Environment is crucial! Joe would be happiest with a kitty companion in the home, so if you have a kitty who’d be friendly to another kitty, Joe could be a great new friend for you and him. We rescued Spirit from a holding facility up north, where she’d lived in the bottom row of a bank of cages for over a year. She spent a year frightened, confused and depressed, surrounded by barking dogs 24/7 and the occasional stranger peering in to look at her. She had a skin condition that required her to be in confinement for months before she could finally join the other kitties. But she’s still a “loner, not a kitty who joins the crowd. Quiet and sweet, Spirit likes being brushed and petted and talked to, but she has her limits. New owners must provide veterinarian documentation of current rabies vaccination and a neutering/spayed certificate if applicable. If a license is not renewed by January 31, 2019, a $25 late fee
will be assessed. Licenses may be requested by mail if a rabies certificate and neutering/spayed certificate is sent along with a self-addressed stamped envelope and a check made out to the Town of Kittery with the corresponding fee for your dog(s). Licence requests should be addressed to: Town Clerk, 200 Rogers Road, Kittery, ME 03904. For a breakdown of dog licensing fees, as well as access to online license renewals with the State of Maine Online Dog Licensing Service, go to www. kitteryme.gov.

Dennis L. Crocker Sr., 66 WELLS – Dennis Crocker, Sr. went to be with the Lord on December 2, 2018, his 66th birthday. He was born December 2, 1952 in Damariscotta, son of Chester and Isabelle (Lewis) Crocker. Dennis graduated from Wiscasset High School where he excelled in basketball and baseball. He was offered a full scholarship to the University of Maine, turning it down to pursue his lifelong career with Central Maine Power, retiring after 46 years. In 1980, he married Marilyn Dickinson and relocated to Wells. Dennis was a blackbelt in karate, teaching classes at Messiah Christian Church in Wells, where his son, D.J. was his student. He was very active in the Trailblazers Family Club where he was the current Trail Master, board member, bar manager and organized the weekly Cribbage Tournaments. Dennis was an avid hunter, golfer and fly fisherman. He was a member of Sanford Country Club and participated in the Wells Alumni Golf Tournaments, CMP Annual Golf Tournaments. He enjoyed annual fishing trips to Pierce Pond Camps in North New Portland, ME with his dad, brother Bob and dear friend, Marty Ryan. Grand Lake Stream trips with Marty were also special to him.
Dennis will be remembered as a wonderful and dedicated husband, father, brother, uncle and friend. He had outstanding work ethics, beginning his career with CMP at just 16 years old. He would do anything for anyone in need and had a deep commitment to the Lord, his family and community. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Marilyn (Dickinson) Crocker; his son D. J. Crocker and his wife Justyna, all of Wells; two brothers, Robert Crocker and his wife Nancy of Washington, MA and Johnny Crocker of MN; a sister, Sherri Franklin and her husband Stuart of Ocala, FL as well as nieces and nephews whom he adored dearly. A celebration of Denny’s life will be held on Monday, December 10, 5-7 p.m. with a brief service at 6:30 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter, 383 US Route 1, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074. Johnson Funeral Home in North Berwick is caring for the family. Condolences may be expressed at www.johnsonfuneralhomeme.com.
A lifelong resident of Bucks County, Rich was born in Trevose, the youngest of five children born to James Cephas and Marie Elizabeth (Hediger) Guthrie. After graduating Valedictorian of his class at Lower Moreland High School where he also excelled in sports, he served in the US Army. While in boot camp in TX, he enjoyed playing ball with Willie Mays. Stationed in Korea, he had the honor and opportunity to chauffer Marilyn Monroe when she went to entertain the troops. In February of 1956, he married Phyllis Jane Ludlow, also of Trevose. Sharing a great sense of humor, they raised their three children and numerous furry and feathered friends on Kelly Road. Employed by Standard Press Steel, Rich had a long career in the tool and die business, retiring from the Jade Corp in 2001. He played on ball teams and enjoyed coaching his children’s sports. A member of SPEBSQA (Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America), he had a beautiful tenor singing voice, and also enjoyed playing the banjo and harmonica. Since the passing of his wife in 2007 Rich became a “Dr. Doolittle surrounded by counltess critters, numerous cats, dogs, raccoons, deer and vul-
tures until earlier this year when he moved to Maine to live. His last five months were spent at the Maine Veterans’ Homes in Scarborough where he received excellent care, for which his family will be eternally grateful. Rich leaves behind a daughter, JoAnn (Steve Godin) Beaudette of South Berwick, sons Jim (Deb) Guthrie of Phoenix, AZ and Rich (Trudi) Guthrie of Elliottsburg, PA, nine grandchildren, Jennie (Amit) Cuchhadia, Sarah (Pete) Lajoie, Jim (Emily) Guthrie, Tim (Buffy) Guthrie, Jackie (Mike) St.Onge, Chris Guthrie, Gabe Guthrie, Emily Beaudette, and Lily Guthrie, and nine great-grandchildren, Amisha and Ajay Cuchhadia, Zoey Lajoie, Hayden Guthrie, Lexy, Brandon and Jason Guthrie, Brayden and Addie St.Onge, one sister, Joan (Fred) Shahan of Warrington, many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends, among them, Anita and Don Kaiser to whom we feel more gratitude than words can convey. The family wishes also to recognize and share their sincere appreciation to the Maine Veterans’ Homes of Scarborough for their respect and high quality care and service to our father. Dustin W. Mracek, 36 YORK – Dustin Mracek of York left us suddenly on Tuesday morning, November 27, 2018 after a brief battle with a systemic blood infection. This unimaginable heartbreak is shared by our family and his extensive family of friends.
The staff at York Hospital, Maine Medical Center, and the emergency transport team were so amazing and we are truly grateful for everything they did to try to save our sweet boy. Dustin was known by all as a sweet, kind, gentle giant with the warmest bear hugs even the most stoic of people could not turn down. A man who shared his life freely with his many friends, always the first to offer a helping hand, putting the needs of others before his own. When not at work with his “other family at Georgia Pacific, he could be found at Odiorne Point fishing with friends, making music, or singing a whole heck of a lot of karaoke. Dustin is survived by his parents, Bill and Wendy Mracek of York; sister Holly Mracek of Kittery; grandparents, Robert and Katherine Moulton of York; grandfather, William Mracek Sr.
of Sequim, WA; and his many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. During this time of grieving we should take his lead in caring for one another, reach out to those in need, and also do what he did not find so easy: ask for help and graciously receive it, as we will all find ourselves in want of a kind friend. On December 9, we will be having a celebration of Dustin’s life at New Frontiers Church, located at 1 Gosling Road, Portsmouth, NH. We welcome you to join us during these times to come and go freely, knowing we all grieve in our own way. A service of guided remembrance with comments from the family will be held 3-3:30 p.m. Visitation will be held 3:30-6 p.m. as a time to eat, share stories, laugh, shed a tear, and hug a neck. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Dustin
Mracek Scholarship Fund, Portsmouth Music and Arts Center, 973 Islington St, Portsmouth, NH, 03801 (www.pmaconline. org/ways-to-give), to honor his love of music and those in need. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home in York is assisting with arrangements. Visit www.lucaseatonfuneralhome.com.
Rosemary Garrity Thompson, 72 ELIOT – Rosemary Garrity Thompson, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by family on Thursday, November 22, 2018. Rosie was born on July 17, 1946 in New York City. As a child she loved ballet dancing. Rosie and her family moved to Long Island when she was ten years old. There she happily grew up with her large, loving and hilarious family. Rosie made
wonderful friends and memories on Long Island including the Drum and Bugle Corp. Rosie eventually moved to Boston with friends where she met her husband Peter Thompson. They married, putting roots down in Kittery. There together they lovingly raised their two daughters Kate and Emi. Rosie loved her lifestyle as a domestic engineer. She enjoyed volunteering at the Kittery See THOMPSON page 31...
~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, My problem is my SD card is not being recognized when i insert it in the SD card reading slot on the computer. I have pictures to download. Thank you for your help, Betsy Dear Betsy, The first thing you need to do is determine if the problem is with your SD card, or with the card reader. To do that, I would suggest you try a different SD card in the slot. If that
one doesn’t work either, the problem might be with the card slot. You should be able to purchase a USB SD card reader and plug it into a USB port on your computer. If the second SD card works in the slot on your computer, you might have a bad SD card. They do go bad after a while. If that is the case, simply purchase a new SD card and start using that for your pictures. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady,

If I am a victim of a computer scam who do I contact? Fortunately, I caught the scam in time where I was able to stop payment on the check. But I want to report the company that scammed me. Thank you, Robert Dear Robert, There are a lot of different kinds of computer scams out there, so sometimes who you report it to depends on the details of the scam. Here are some good guidelines to get you started. You can always file a report with your local police department. In addition to filing the report, they will usually be able to help you figure out what other agencies you should report the scam to. Contact one or more of your state consumer protection offices. You can look up your specific state at www.usa.gov/ state-consumer. You can learn

When I scroll down or to the side, it seems to never end. Thank you, Teresa Dear Teresa, There is a quick and easy way to highlight all the cells in an Excel worksheet. Click in the upper-left corner of the worksheet. It is located above the number 1 (in the rows column) and to the left of the letter A. Clicking that little square will highlight the entire worksheet. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Excel 2016 - How do I automatically add a darker line after each 5th line? Thanks, Conrad Dear Conrad, What you will need to do is use a function in Excel called
Conditional formatting. 1. Select all or the part of the worksheet you want to add the lines to. 2. Click on the “Homeâ€? tab in the ribbon, find the section labeled, “Stylesâ€?, click the drop down arrow next to “Conditional Formattingâ€? and click on “New Ruleâ€?. 3. Click to select, “Use a formula to determine which cells to formatâ€? 4. Now you will have to enter a formula for your rule. It should go something like this: =MOD(ROW(),6)=0 The number 6 can be changed to any desired number of rows. 5. Click the “Format...â€? button and select the color you want to darken each line with and click “OKâ€?. 6. Click “OKâ€? and your worksheet should have the new formatting applied. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? ~ News ~ ...THOMPSON from page 30 public schools as well as attending all her girls’ sporting events. Rosie loved becoming a Grandmother. She found no greater joy then rocking the babies, especially alongside one of her best friends, Lisa Glidden. Recently she lived one of her dreams by taking Kate and Emi’s families with her to Disney. Rosie is predeceased by her parents Claire and John as well as her husband Peter. She is survived by her siblings John Garrity and wife Kim, Eileen Wimsat and husband Greg, Kathleen Garrity and partner Holly Horn, Deetzie Downing and husband Glenn, Tommy Garrity and wife Debbie, daughters Kate McDaniel and husband Erik, Emi and husband Chris, and her grandchildren Elle, Ryen, Maeve, Nova, Peter and Keira, as well as her many loving nieces and nephews. Per Rosie’s request there will be no services. The family would like to thank Dr. Barbara Civiello and all of the amazing staff at the Seacoast Cancer Center for their incredible care and compassionate support. In lieu of flowers donations in Rosie’s honor may be made www.wdhospital.com/ wdhf/giving/donate-now under “Donate Now” for the “Seacoast Cancer Center”. To leave online condolences, please visit www. jspelkeyfuneralhome.com. Care for the Thompson family has been entrusted to the JS Pelkey Funeral Home.
Winter Tips for Ice Safety STATEWIDE Although many lakes and ponds are just starting to freeze and may be snow covered, Lifesaving Resources warns that these venues are extremely dangerous this time of year. They warn that the snow layer actually insulates the ice and prevents it from continuing to freeze, compromising the integrity of the ice. To stay safe when on or near the ice, Lifesaving Resources recommends: Make sure there is 4-5” of
new, clear, hard ice before venturing out. Carry ice picks that can be used to claw your way out of the water in the event you fall through. Carry a pea-less plastic whistle to alert others in the event of an emergency. Wear a life jacket or float coat if venturing on ice over deep water. Keep pets, especially dogs, under control and off the ice. Last year, 75% of the ice
emergencies occurred as a result of an animal falling through the ice and the incident escalated when humans attempted to rescue the animal. In an emergency, call 911 and only attempt to assist by performing a shore-based rescue by extending or throwing something to the person or animal from the safety of the shore. Lifesaving Resources trains first responders throughout the United States and internationally in ice and water rescue and reminds everyone that most
first responders are trained and equipped to safely and effectively respond to these types of emergencies. For more information, visit the Lifesaving Resources’ website at www.lifesaving.com or call 207-967-8614.

Tyler Bridge – Student Athlete of the Month at WHS
WELLS Wells High School senior Tyler Bridge was honored as “Student-Athlete of the Month. He received this distinction for a combination of his academics and sportsmanship as a running back and cornerback with the WHS Warriors Football team, winners of the 2018 Class D State Championship. “It feels pretty good, said Bridge about receiving the award. On November 17 in Orono, the Warriors won the state title against Foxcroft Academy 55-20. In that game
Bridge scored a game changing five touchdowns and tossed for another TD. “Tyler is the best football player in the state of Maine, commented Warriors Head Coach Tim Roche. “He set school records for rushing 2390 yards and 45 touchdowns. He was an outstanding defensive player with four interceptions. On top of all that he is 5th in his class and a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council and Interact. Roche summed up Bridge as an “All around great kid. Presenting Bridge with the Student-Athlete of the Month
plaque was WOSD Director of Athletics 6-12 Pierce Cole, Pam Moody-Maxon, and John C. Kreie. The Student-Athlete of the Month program is sponsored by the Cole Harrison Insurance Agency and Moody Maxon Real Estate. John Kreie represents Cole Harrison in co-presenting the Student Athlete of the Month Award at the school. “Tyler was the leading force behind yet another State Championship Football team,â€? commented Kreie. “His numbers this year are mind boggling‌â€? Kreie added, “He’s an

According to the Journal Tribune of November 23, 2018, Bridge is now in the running with another to receive the Fitzpatrick Trophy for 2018.
“Wolfie
