name aloud, thank them for their service and sacrifice, and reflect on that person and their life. Over 400,000 wreaths are laid at Arlington National Cemetery, with thousands more laid at over 150 other cemeteries around the country. Williams Realty Partners and Hannaford Host Food Drive NORTH BERWICK Williams Realty Partners (WRP) is excited to announce their partnership with North Berwick Hannaford this holiday season. The two businesses are partnering together on Sunday, December 10, to host a food drive to benefit House of Hope based in Berwick. This is one of many events throughout the month celebrating the WRP Month of Giving. Jordyn Koelker and Tristan Swanson of Williams Realty Partners will be at the North Berwick Hannaford on December 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. collecting nonperishable food and monetary donations. This family friendly food drive includes hot cocoa tours of the WRP Trolley. Swanson details more about the event, “Jordyn [Koelker] and I want to do our part in helping people in need. We had a great turn out at our food drive at Hannaford in York and decided to reach out to Hannaford in North Berwick to do the same thing at their location. They agreed and we couldn’t be happier. The House of Hope is an amazing organization with a great new facility. Our goal is to give them a kick start to helping others! I want to stress that any amount of support is fantastic. If you would rather give your time to the House of Hope reach out to them directly and they can suggest the best way for you to volunteer. Otherwise, please

bring your donations to the event on the 10th and check out the Williams Realty Partners Trolley! The kids will love it! The beneficiary, House of Hope, is a safe place for those with a need to receive nourishment for the body, heart and soul. Their location is strategically situated between two under-served communities – Somersworth, NH and Berwick. “At the House of Hope we served more than 14,000 meals and over 1,000 people shopped in our pantry, just last year alone. I’d like to thank everyone in advance for contributing to the food drive in such a meaningful way, explains Mike Henessey, Executive Director at House of Hope. The ministry operates a fully functional soup kitchen, food pantry and transitional house for men with the intent of growing into a deeper and broader scope as opportunity presents. Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK Introducing Parker, a handsome 2-1/2-year-old boy who came to us from a rural kill shelter that was closing and whose director refused to kill any of the kitties there and reached out for help to spare their lives. Parker, who grew up at this shelter, spent most of his time knowing only a cage and the love of the director who tried her best to shower the animals in her care with affection and attention while trying to get them adopted. Parker could not "free roam" all day at the shelter where he came from like he now can with us. Getting used to being able to free roam in a rescue setting among other kitties has been a learning process. Over time, he has developed a love for wet food, which took some getting used to for him. While not "a lap cat" yet, Parker does love to sit beside you once he trusts you enough and thinks that purring is pretty amazing! He is up-todate on all of his vaccinations, has been fully vetted and is neutered. We feel he'll do best in a quieter calm home where he has humans who understand his past and will work with him to give him reassurances, patience and love! Gradual introductions with other cats would be advised and we're unsure how he would do with dogs. He also seems ok with older children who are re-

Maine Coast Lobster Co. and Independent Health Altrusa of the Seacoast Makes Donation Advantage Partner to Pioneer in Employee Health Benefits YORK Maine Coast, a world-wide distributor of North American lobster, and Independent Health Advantage, a Direct Primary Care (DPC) medical practice, both companies headquartered in York, have created the first partnership in the State to integrate Direct Primary Care into an employer-sponsored benefits package. Maine Coast, having undergone significant growth over the past two years, was awarded a place on Inc. 5000s Fastest Growing Private Companies in America list for 2017. With a growth rate of 125% over the past three years and the company’s expansion into a 5000 squarefoot live lobster warehouse at the Boston Fish Pier in July, Maine Coast founder Tom Adams felt a responsibility to improve upon the healthcare he has been giving his dedicated employees. For this benefit to be affordable to employees and management, Adams collaborated with Independent Health Advantage, a Direct Primary Care practice. “From the employees’ cost perspective, this is a great benefit. There are no co-pays involved. Furthermore, employees will now avoid having to work toward meeting their high deductible; for which many will never hit. This relieves our team members of the burden of paying significant out-of-pocket healthcare expenses. Instead, they get to develop a personal meaningful relationship with their doctor.” George Claassen, expert on Employer/DPC partnerships and Innovated Employee Benefits Solutions consultant for Borislow Insurance based in Methuen, MA, sees such arrangements gaining momentum as small- to medium-sized businesses struggle to retain quality employees and cover the cost of employee health benefits. Claassen explains Direct Primary Care provides business owners an alternative to the frightening cost of employee health benefits. “With average premium increases in the double digits for the last several years, it has become a major challenge for companies to provide their employees with quality benefits. Every year many employers have no option but to water down benefits; requiring their employees to pay higher premiums, deductibles,

and out-of-pocket expenses.” Dr. Peter Sacchetti, physician and founder of Independent Health Advantage has been in practice in York County for over 10 years prior to opening Maine’s first Direct Primary Care Internal Medicine practice two years ago. He saw a unique opportunity to bring an affordable employee healthcare option to business owners here in Maine and New Hampshire. In Dr. Sacchetti’s practice, Maine Coast patients will have 24/7 access to his direct cell phone, email and tele-medicine capabilities, and same- or nextday unrushed appointments. An on-site laboratory provides point-of-care results and the private pharmacy offers patients the option to purchase prescription medication at near-wholesale prices. Pre-employment physi-

cals and timely evaluations of work-related injuries eliminates the reliance of outsourcing these services, further reducing the business cost. Dr. Sacchetti explains, “A human being’s most valuable resource is time. Patients do a lot of waiting around for medical care and when they finally get a turn, their provider barely spends time with them. That’s what’s different about DPC – wasted time is replaced with productive time and you get to see a physicianyour physician. This is not only appreciated by the patient, but recognized as an advantage by a business-like Maine Coast, who should see fewer lost employee hours. I’ll meet with patients on their schedule, not mine, for just about anything. This is not a simple nine-to-five operation and I like it that way.”

ate in audiology" says owner Matthew T. Lewandowski, Au.D, CCC-A. "No high-pressure sales pitch. No technicians. We care about our patients and their hearing needs." Dr. Lewandowski earned his doctorate from Central Michigan University in 2013. He obtained a Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC-A) in audiology, which requires completion of a tenuous academic program and passing a national examination. Infinity Hearing is located at 453 US Route 1, Kittery, across from the new Domino's Pizza. Services include, but are not limited to hearing evaluations, otoscopy, wax removal, tinnitus management, hearing aid repair and hearing aid cleanings. Agency. “Tim and Dave have a long history serving the agricultural community in Maine and come with a wealth of knowledge about the USDA programs they are tapped to lead,” said U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Senator Angus King in a joint statement. “With that understanding and experience, they will be exceptional leaders of these USDA programs that are instrumental in assisting rural areas with economic development and supporting agricultural needs across our state. We look forward to working with Tim and Dave as they assume their new roles serving Mainers.” Hobbs has served as the Director of Development and Grower Relations for the Maine Potato Board for the past 15 years. Prior to his service on the Maine Potato Board, Hobbs worked for five years as the Executive Director of the Central Aroostook Soil and Water Conservation District. ~ News ~ Berwick Scouts Collecting for Food Pantry and Coats for Kids BERWICK Scouting for Food Pantry/ Coats for Kids is hosted by Boy Scout Troop 313 and assisted by Cub Scout Pack 313, and Girl Scout Troops of Berwick and more. These Scouts will be covering neighborhoods in Berwick on Saturday, December 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. During this time, scouts will be going door-to-door to collect donations of non-perishable food items such as canned and dry goods for the Community Food Pantry, which is in dire need of assistance at this time of year. The Scouts would like to thank the Berwick community for the 3831 pounds of food collected in 2016 and would like to match or exceed that for 2017. What we collect lasts only a couple of months so the pantry is counting on us for our help again this year! For those who will not be home, the Scouts ask them to please leave a bag on the doorstep for pickup. Donations can also be dropped off at the Noble Middle School cafeteria entrance, 46 Cranberry Meadow Rd until 3 p.m. on Saturday. Based on the amount of volunteers, not all the roads may be covered. So if your food donation is not

picked up by 2 p.m., please drop it off at the school or you can call 603-767-6045 by 1:30 p.m. to have it picked up. Scouts will also be collecting coats, boots, mittens, scarves, hats and other winter clothing items for Coats for Kids and the Community Closet. Donations of winter attire can also be dropped off at Noble Middle School on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Remember kids come in all sizes so adult sizes are welcome as well. For questions, call Boy Scout Troop 313 Committee Member Cliff Schweiger at 207-698-5380.

safety tips in mind for safety and energy efficiency: Dried Christmas tree limbs and hot lights can be a dangerous combination, so if you have a live tree, be sure to keep it fresh. Before you put the tree in its stand, cut its base at a 45-degree angle so it can absorb water. Water the tree liberally — the average tree can consume between a quart and a gallon of water a day. Remove the tree promptly after the holiday or when it becomes dry. Consider miniature and/or LED lights, which produce less heat, reduce the drying effect on the tree, and use less energy. All lights and cords should be factory tested; check for the UL label on the packaging. Carefully inspect light cords, plugs and receptacles for worn or frayed insulation and loose connections. Throw away damaged items. Don’t overload electrical circuits or extension cords; follow the directions on cord labels regarding connecting light strings and extension cords. If a cord feels hot to the touch, it is overloaded and may cause an electrical fire. Additionally, make sure the cords are out of the way so that nobody trips over them. Keep flammable decorations away from the tree's lights.

Also make sure that electric window candles do not touch drapes or other flammable objects. Keep wires away from toddlers and pets. Push wires toward the center of the tree, and clip them securely to the branches. Never use electric lights on metallic trees. Avoid using plastic trees unless they’re flame resistant. Always turn holiday lights off before going to sleep and when you leave home, or consider using a programmable timer to turn lighting displays on and off automatically. While decorating the outside of your home: Look up and around the area first to identify overhead lines and other hazards; Never raise ladders, poles or other extended objects into or near power lines; Use only outdoor-approved lights that can withstand cold temperatures; Check to make sure that tree limbs aren’t near power lines. Remember that no power line is safe to touch, ever. In the kitchen, keep close watch on your stovetop, grill, and oven while in use, and never use them as a heating source. Customers can monitor their holiday energy use during the holidays or year-round by enrolling in CMP’s free Energy Manager service. For more information, go to www.cmpco.com.

OPA to Show “The Shop Around the Corner”

OGUNQUIT Ogunquit Performing Arts continues its 2017-2018 Classic Film Series with a screening of Ernst Lubitsch's romantic comedy, "The Shop Around the Corner" on Sunday, December 10 at 2 p.m. at the Dunaway Center, 23 School Street, Ogunquit. Admission, parking and popcorn are free. "The Shop Around the Corner" is a 1940 American ensemble comedy film produced and directed by Ernst Lubitsch, and starring Margaret Sullavan, James Stewart, and Frank

Morgan. The screenplay was written by Samson Raphaelson, based on the 1937 Hungarian play Parfumerie by Miklos Laszlo. Set at Christmastime, "The Shop Around the Corner" tells the story of the assorted employees of a notions shop in Budapest. The main characters are head clerk Alfred Kralik (Stewart) and new employee Klara Novak (Sullavan), who can barely stand each other, not realizing they’re falling in love as anonymous correspondents through their letters. The film is also a true

ensemble piece, delving into the lives and personalities of each employee, including the crusty, ill-tempered boss Matuschek (Frank Morgan), a kindly family man Pirovitch (Felix Bressart), and a good-looking but vain salesman Vadas (Joseph Schildkraut). German-born Ernst Lubitsch achieved great renown as a film-maker in the early part of the 20th century. His sophisticated style of subtle, nuanced humor, incisive and witty visual detail, and impeccable timing, became widely known as “the Lubitsch Touch”. Lubitsch’s film inspired many adaptations and remakes including the musical film "In the Good Old Summertime" with Judy Garland and Van

KITTERY “Christmas Songs and Their Stories You Didn't Know”, a presentation hosted by the Kittery Historical & Naval Museum at the Kittery Lions Club, 117 State Road, on December 12 at 7 p.m., is free and open to the public. Presented by Ramblin' Richard, this interesting and entertaining program recalls the beloved secular songs of the Christmas season. Sing along with classics like Holly Jolly Christmas, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Richard asks questions such as: What popular holiday song came from a highly successful book promotion sponsored by the Montgomery Ward Department store chain? Which song is one of the most beloved Christmas songs but never mentions Christmas, and was first performed in Savannah, GA on Thanksgiving! Which holiday song echoed the hopes and dreams of thousands of GIs during World War II? Richard, a member of the New England Foundation for the Arts, is a retired professor who studied Gospel and American folk music, and is an active musician who makes more than 300 performances each year. He tells the stories and sings the songs while accompanying himself on guitar, five-string banjo and baritone ukulele. Donations of non-perishable food items will be gratefully accepted for Foot Prints Food Pantry. For more information, visit www.kitterymuseum.com.

“Irving Berlin’s White Christmas The Musical is the perfect present for Christmas fans — or anyone else, for that matter — who love a good romance wrapped up in holiday cheer. The delightful musical, a refreshing remake of the vintage 1950s movie starring Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Danny Kaye and Vera Lynn, is on stage now through December 17 at the Music Hall in collaboration with the Ogunquit Playhouse, its producer. From the moment the curtain rises, following the lively overture, the audience is in for one treat after another from fabulous dancing to raucous comedy to a marvelous score of great Berlin tunes. The story stays true to the movie’s plot as it follows show biz big shots Bob Wallace and Phil Davis’ budding romances with the pretty Haynes sisters – Betty and Judy — an aspiring sister act and the younger siblings of one of their old Army buddies. The girls are booked for a holiday gig at the Pine Tree Inn in Pine Tree, Vermont. So Phil, determined to find a girlfriend for Bob, transfers their train tickets from Miami to Vermont. On arrival, they discover that the inn’s crusty owner is

their old Army general Henry Waverly. And instead of frigid temps and three feet of snow, it’s a balmy 70 degrees. They hatch a plan to help the general by rehearsing and opening their new show at the inn over the holidays, snow or no snow. The romances hit a few snags along the way, but, just as in the movie, love conquers all. And it snows, of course, on Christmas Eve. The wonderful production, directed by Jayme McDaniel, is especially satisfying since several of the numbers in the movie have been eliminated — notably the boring “Choreography piece and “The Minstrel Show. Instead, we’re treated to a rousing rendition of “Blue Skies in the first act and a

fabulous second act opener “I Love a Piano. Both showcase the great choreography and fabulous dance talents in this cast. Another treat is Sally Struthers’ great performance as Martha Watson, the general’s busybody inn manager and right-hand helper. Struthers, a Playhouse favorite, brings down the house time and again with her raucous performance and funfilled rendition of “Let Me Sing and I’m Happy. The four leads — David Elder as Bob, Jacob ben Widmar as Phil, Kate Loprest as Betty and Vanessa Sonon as Judy — take some getting used to for “White Christmas movie fans (like me) who can’t get Crosby, Kaye, Clooney and Lynn out of their minds when they think of their favorite holiday film. But their performances are good and grow on you. Widmar and Sonon dance fabulously and showcase their talents in “The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing and “I Love a Piano. Elder’s voice is wonderful, particularly in “Count Your Bless-

ings and “White Christmas. And Loprest shines in “Love You Didn’t Do Right By Me. The supporting cast is excellent, notably Steve Brady as Gen. Waverly, Bunny Baldwin, Susan in some shows, and Ryan Steer as Sheldrake. And local Irish singer Kevin Farley adds levity as the slow-moving stage hand Ezekiel Foster. The show’s design elements are wonderful — especially Carrie Robbins’ vintage1950s costumes. I loved all of the mixed plaids the cast wore in the train scene as everyone sang “Snow while they chugged along the tracks heading north. “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas is the perfect way to spend a December afternoon or evening leading up to Christmas. If you love the holidays, it’s the ideal way to wrap yours up. And if you’re feeling a bit “bah-humbug this year, it’s a sure way to banish the blahs. And don’t slip out before the end. The final scene will give you goosebumps, I promise. Merry White Christmas! For tickets, call 603-436-2400 or visit www.themusichall.org. ...RUSSIAN from page 11 at no charge. Goodman expressed, “Our little town of 4.1 square miles does amazing things for our state.

~ Ask The Computer Lady~ Dear Computer Lady, I hope you can help me, I have somehow copied my photos from my phone to my computer multiple times, and now have duplicates of almost every picture in different locations. I know I need to clean them up, but this is going to take forever! Please tell me there is an easier way. Thank you, Dakota Dear Dakota, I actually have a great way to speed up the process of cleaning up your files. Some time ago, a reader sent me a link to this free program: www.auslogics. com/en/software/duplicate-filefinder/ and I have been putting it to use. Sometimes when I am working on a project, either learning or teaching a subject, I make copies of files as I go, and I have been using this program to

clean things up. One helpful hint for this program though, is to narrow the results down to just the specific folders you are working on, otherwise you might be overwhelmed by the number of results. The files you remove can be sent to the recycle bin so that you can restore a file later if you desire. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Since I upgraded to Windows 10, I cannot figure out how to change my default view of files to 'List'. When I attempt to change it folder by folder (which takes hours!), I often find it has reverted back to the default 'Details' view. Is there a way to change to 'List' view universally? Thank you for all you do! Best Wishes, Stephanie Dear Stephanie, The first step to setting the

default view for all your folders is to set up one folder exactly the way you want all your other folders to look. When you have it set up, click "View" in the ribbon, then click, "Options" (located on the right side of the ribbon). This will open the "Folder Options" dialog box. In the Folder Options dialog box, click on the "View" tab. In the "Folder Views" section, click the button that says, "Apply to Folders". Click the, "Yes" button in the confirmation dialog box. Finally, click the "OK" button in the Folder Options dialog box to save your changes and close the dialog box. Your might have to repeat this process for different types of folders (folders with music or pictures are treated differently) but this is much faster than doing one folder at a time. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I've heard that LibreOffice can be used to open files created years ago in MS Works (WPS files, DOC files, Spreadsheets, etc.). I am running Windows 10 Home edition. Under system type, it says that it is a 64-bit operating system with a X64-based processor. When asked to choose which Windows download I want at the Free Office site, the choices are Windows X86 or Windows X86_64. Which one is the appropriate choice for me?

There are also two LibreOffice versions available: the 5.4.3 'fresh' version and the 5.3.7 'still' version. Which one would you recommend? Francis Dear Francis, Let's go to www.libreoffice. org/download/download/ and take a look at the options. In the "Choose your operating system" section, there are two options for Windows. The Windows X86 version is actually the 32-bit version of Windows. If you had an older computer, or were not sure if you had a 64-bit operating system or not, you would select that one. Since you already know you are running the 64-bit version of Windows 10 on your computer, you can select, Windows X86_64 which is the same as your 64-bit operating system. As for which version of LibreOffice you should select, the first one is the newest version. It might have more features, but it might not have all the bugs worked out yet. The second one is a little bit older, but is more stable. You can select whichever one you want, but if you want the version that has had the bugs worked out of it, go with the second one. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I'm becoming very frustrated, because my cursor has a mind of its own and jumps

Dear Hugh, This is probably the most commonly asked question I get asked, and when I start to answer it, people usually try to argue with me saying that I am wrong, but I have not had a person come back yet and show that I was wrong. While you are typing, your hands are going over the touchpad on your laptop to touch the letter keys. When this happens, the touchpad detects movement either because your palms brush against the touchpad, or if the touchpad is really sensitive, it just detects the motion. When the touchpad detects movement, it moves the cursor on your screen. To test and see if this is what is happening on your computer, tape a small piece of cardboard, (or one of those credit cards from the offers that come in the mail) over the touchpad and start typing. I'm willing to bet the cursor will stay where you want it. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. Ten Holiday Tips for Families of Children with Special Needs The holidays can be fun, but they can add stress to the lives of children with special needs. The Episcopal Center for Children (ECC), a nonprofit organization serving children with special needs ages 5-14 in the greater Washington, DC area, offers the following tips to help. “Children with special needs enjoy the holidays but they are especially sensitive to the changes in routines that the holidays bring,” said Dodd White, president and CEO of ECC. “Making a plan and adjusting your expectations can go a long way to creating a positive holiday experience for the entire family.” Tip #1 – Make a plan for the holidays and share it with your family. Create a schedule for your family’s holiday activities and post it for your child to see. You may find it helpful to use pictures to help a young child. Talk about the schedule with your child, so he or she can anticipate what will happen. Tip #2 – Remind your family about holiday plans. Review the schedule weekly. Discuss the schedule with others in your home, so they understand what is going on and how they can best support your child with special needs, so everyone can have a fun holiday. Tip #3 – For holiday gatherings, give your child a job and a plan. Ask your child to help collect coats, give out treats, or greet arrivals. Rehearse the plan. Give your child a schedule or plan for a festive occasion so he or she

d are th ! r fo C 26 n Sa k-In ec. al g D W nin pe O

knows what to anticipate. Tip #4 – Maintain routines as much as possible. There may be special activities for the holidays, but try to keep your child’s schedule as close to “normal” as possible. Tip #5 – Eat healthy foods and consider how new or special foods impact your child. During the holidays there are all sorts of fun foods and treats to enjoy. Some children are more affected than others by dietary changes. Pay attention to your child’s moods and how diet and situational changes may be impacting him or her. If you are at an event, bring along food that is familiar to your child if you think it may be needed. Tip #6 - If your child is sensitive to unfamiliar smells, help manage them. Cinnamon is a common holiday fragrance. You can add a little cinnamon to play compound to help a child experience this smell minimally (and gauge reaction to it). Ask guests visiting your home to not wear heavy perfumes if your child is sensitive to them. Tip #7 – Get your child into the spirit of the season through gift giving. Gift giving provides an opportunity to practice social skills. Help your child make a gift for someone else, and practice how to give the gift to that person. Tip #8 – Take breaks when needed. Sometimes children need a break from the hubbub of holiday activities and busyness. Fill a bag or backpack with a few favorite toys, games or activities. If you see your child is getting stressed, get out the bag and find a quiet spot to

play. Tip #9 – Do not allow

presents to be a hindrance to enjoyment. Toy packaging

This particular CrossFit event was held at Great Bay CrossFit, a premier strength conditioning facility serving the greater New Hampshire seacoast. Working as a team, the McIntyre’s split up the 95 pound sled, with Joelle carrying 45 pounds, Thomas 25 pounds with Faith pulling the remaining 25 pounds to the halfway point, where they replaced the weights and cheered Thomas on as he pulled the 95 pound sled

the remaining distance! Cancer has struck close to home for the McIntyre family, with four family members lost to this disease over the years, three of whom, including Joelle’s Dad, were veterans (having served in the Navy and Army during WWII and/or Korea and Vietnam). To support their efforts in completing this challenge, members of the Post #79 donated $180 to the

McIntyre team. We all look forward to the day when there will be a cure for all types of cancer, so that no one, especially veterans who survived combat, loses their life to this rampant disease. In the meantime, it’s comforting to know that warriors like the McIntyre’s are doing whatever they can as a family to help win the fight against cancer.

...TIPS from page 19 ping some gifts frustrating. You can adjust packages to their comfort level by loosening ribbons and paper, or pre-cutting fasteners. Ask others who give your child gifts to be aware of his or her needs when it comes to wrapping them. Some children with special needs find it dis-orienting to unwrap things that are new and unfamiliar to them. If that is the case for your child, wrap a few favorite toys for your child to unwrap. Tip #10 – Give your child the gift of your attention. Holidays can be busy for grown-ups and children. Make sure you spend a few minutes of quality time with your child. Give your full attention. Practice active listening, where you listen to

what your child is saying and then repeat it back to them to demonstrate that you were listening. The Episcopal Center for Children (Center) is a nonprofit, nondenominational school and treatment program for children contending with emotional challenges from the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Accredited by the Joint Commission, the Center serves children who are 5-14 years old in grades K-8. More information is available at eccofdc.org and on Twitter and Facebook @ECCofDC. Health & Fitness “Demystifying Climate Risk” Released by Local Author YORK COUNTY What does a scientist who served as a Highly Qualified Expert (HQE) for the Defense Department due upon retirement? Move to Maine and write about the experience of course! Dr. Carole LeBlanc's books are distillations of the “First Annual International Technical Workshop on Climate Risk” hosted by the former HQE and now editor in Wells held in October 2016. The first book covers environmental, health and societal

impacts while the second book focuses on industry and infrastructure. Dr. LeBlanc's premise is that, long before the 2015 Paris Agreement, many professionals from diverse fields were working to solve the problems of humancaused climate change. The 1987 Montreal Protocol, the world’s most successful treaty for atmospheric protection, is now in support of some of the Agreement’s key emission reduction goals. It was time for the seasoned leaders who implemented the Protocol to share their knowledge and

wisdom with the next generation before that expertise was lost. According to LeBlanc, the purpose of bringing these communities of practice together was to: leverage the many successes to date to inspire future innovations through ‘lessons learned’; ensure that new or updated regulations are timely communicated and economically executed; and identify opportunities for related sustainable development. The “Second Annual International Technical Workshop on Climate Risk” was held October 25-26, 2017 in Kennebunk.

CAPE PORPOISE – Daan Troost, 85, of Cape Porpoise, died on Thursday, November 30, 2017 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. He was born in Wageningen, The Netherlands, on October 16, 1932, the younger son of Laurens and Martha (Versluys) Troost. His formative years in The Netherlands included living under the German occupation from 1940 to 1945. Following high school he immigrated to the United States to attend M.I.T. where his father was chair of the Naval Architecture department. Daan graduated in 1957 with a double major in business and metallurgy. Daan married Morven Donald after graduation, and following a short stint in the U.S. Army, he started his first job as a metallurgist with Fafnir Bearing Company in New Britain, CT. The family moved to Maine in 1966 where Daan worked as a project engineer until his retirement in 1986. Early in his retirement years Daan spent some time at Ocean National Bank. For many years Daan enjoyed his small sail boat, moored in Cape Porpoise harbor. He also enjoyed canoeing, hiking and camping with his children. In later years he walked in Cape Porpoise almost every day. Daan was an active Scottish Country Dancer for many years. They made many friends in the Scottish Country Dance community in New England and beyond. When their elder daughter Ellie was tragically killed in 1995, they found in this group, great support and compassion. After thirteen years as empty nesters, they became parents again to Ellie’s son Will. Daan served on the board

of the Maine M.I.T. Alumni Club as well as the Arundel Cemetery committee for many years. Daan enjoyed many years of traveling with his wife, Morven. Music was another interest they shared. He had a deep affection for Cape Porpoise and for the “fixer upper which they bought in 1971 and lived in for 46 years. Daan was predeceased by his wife, Morven, his elder daughter Ellie, and by his brother Marius. He is survived by his son Neil of Portsmouth, NH, his daughter Karen Bragdon of Wells, and his grandchildren, Will Jennes of Rochester, NY, Ian Troost of Portsmouth, NH and Ben and Hannah Bragdon of Wells. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk. Should friends choose, donations in Daan’s memory are encouraged to: Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, PO Box 7004, Cape Porpoise, ME 04014; or The Alzheimer’s Association: Maine Chapter 383 US Route One, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074 (www.alz.org/ maine). To share a memory or leave a message of condolence, please visit Daan’s Book of Memories page at www.bibberfuneral.com. Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk.

BUSINESS & FINANCE Staying Off the Naughty (Spending) List

The holidays are upon us, bringing all those personal and family images and sensations we cherish. But for many of us, there are a few not-so-joyous holiday sights (overflowing boxes and bags from our purchases) and sounds (email notifications of our latest orders and purchases online and the ca-ching! of retail cash registers marking our escalating debt). These negatives can easily outweigh all that we love about the holiday season. "Overall, the 2008 finan-

cial crisis and recession brought about a renewed dedication to saving," says Tyson, author of Personal Finance in Your 20s & 30s For DummiesÂŽ. "It's very important that you not let your holiday spending zap all of the saving progress you made during the year. "Whether it's a dedication to the gift-giving tradition, a sense of obligation, or a feeling that the holidays entitle us to have a little more fun than usual, too many of us seem to turn a blind eye to the budget-busting

reality of all that spending over just a couple of months," he adds. "Don't let excessive holiday spending cause unnecessary financial stress for you and your loved ones." What if you could have a wonderful, memorable holiday and avoid the financial hangover afterwards? Tyson provides great tips on how to keep your holiday spending in check. Find an alternative to gift-giving during the holidays. Many people feel they have to give gifts during the holidays, either because it's a family tradition or because they know their friends and relatives have gotten gifts for them. There are plenty of great ways to trade in this tradition for another one that is even more meaningful, and chances are your family and friends will be happy to save giftbuying dough as well. "Instead of exchanging gifts, your family members might want to pool their money and spend it on a holiday outing," says Tyson. "If you have kids, you'll probably want to get them a little something, but set strict spending limits. Instead of piling up the toys, let each child

choose an outing or event that he or she gets to spend with you one-on-one." If you must buy gifts, cut your expenses elsewhere as necessary. Perhaps you'd rather dine out or go to the movies less, or maybe you can forego that new pair of shoes you've been wanting for yourself in order to afford gifts for the grandparents. "It doesn't matter where you make cuts, just that you make them," says Tyson. "Keeping your other spending under control while you're out there doing your shopping can be a challenge, but just keep repeating to yourself the importance of not over-spending." Set a budget and keep tabs on what you are spending. While you're doing your holiday shopping, your new best friends should be your bank account and credit card records. It's easy to get into a spending rhythm when shopping for yourself or

others, and that's why you need to keep track of every purchase you make and make sure you don't go over your budget. "When you start to add up everything you're spending, you may be shocked at what all those expenses from this store and that store add up to be," says Tyson. "And don't forget about all those 'necessary' holiday extras. Most people don't budget their shopping and don't realize that by the time you buy all the presents, plus wrapping paper, cards, decorations, etc., it's added up to a ridiculous amount. " Plan what you are going to buy, and don't get any extras! Particularly during the holidays, companies pull out their most appealing packaging in hopes of snagging the eyes of shoppers. Don't go shopping for someone's gift until you See SPENDING page 27...

~ News ~ Students Welcome and Serve Seniors at Annual Holiday Feast WELLS Eighth grade students and staff at Wells Junior High School presented the 23rd Annual Thanksgiving Dinner for area seniors on November 19. According to an organizer of the event, Vicki Aldridge, well over 400 were served a traditional holiday dinner this year. This event, which takes several days preparation beforehand, is not only a gesture of goodwill offered to the community but considered “service learning for 8th grade students, many of whom work as wait and kitchen staff. In addition, the holiday dinner is the culmination of a “Genera-

8th grade students who attended and worked on the 23rd WJHS Annual Thanksgiving Dinner on November 17. (A.J. Dufort photo)

tions unit of study in 8th grade ELA classes. There, the subject of aging in modern society is studied including student visits to

Sentry Hill in York to interview residents. As in past years, members of the WHS Student Council offered valet parking for dinner

guests. “As always, our students were amazing, commented WJHS Principal Robert Griffin

before you go to the store to make the purchase." Leave the plastic at home. Many of us can explain away spending so much on gifts because we simply charge everything and reason that we can pay it off gradually after the holidays. This is a great way to create a never-ending cycle of consumer debt for yourself. It only creates unnecessary financial stress for you after the holidays. "Use your budget to figure out how you can purchase the gifts you want to purchase without putting them on your credit card," says Tyson. "If you are so cash-strapped that you think it will be difficult to avoid charging gifts, then you may want to sit down with other friends and family and propose a limit on how much gifts can cost this year—or propose no-adult gift exchanges at all. Far from being disappointed, it's likely they'll view this reprieve from gift-buy-

ing as a gift in its own right." Invest in your kids' financial futures. It may not seem as exciting to your kids as a new iPod, but a contribution to their financial well-being will be appreciated long after such expensive "toys" are obsolete. "Have the grandparents contribute to a college tuition fund or savings account rather than buy them more stuff they don't need," suggests Tyson. "Or make one of your gifts to your kids a stock fund portfolio that can start accruing now. Also, make them aware of the budgets and tools you are using to keep your spending in check. The holidays are a great time for them to truly learn that money doesn't grow on trees." Give the gift of time to your kids. Often, parents buy gifts for their kids with the best of intentions. Either you don't want to deprive them of the toys and gadgets all of their friends have, or

you want to give them the things you didn't have as a kid. Remember that meaningful gifts don't necessarily have a big price tag. "Sure, it might be nice to give your mom a brand new TV, but there are other things out there that will be even more meaningful and enjoyable for her," says Tyson. "Money can easily become the focus of the holidays when it should be the last thing you are thinking about," says Tyson. "By keeping your spending under control, you can have a great holiday and avoid the sick feeling in the pit of your stomach that occurs when you start getting those January credit card bills. If you prepare properly, you can achieve a happy balance of spending and saving during the holiday season. " For more information, visit the book's page on www. wiley.com. The Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third party articles.

...SPENDING from page 24 know exactly what you are going to buy. "Watch out for deals that seem too good to be true. Retailers and websites run all sorts of specials to induce consumers to buy now, and the holidays offer these companies easy prey in the form of deal-seeking, cashstrapped consumers. For example, furniture stores frequently offer that if you buy now, you don't have to pay a thing for a year, and you might even get free delivery. "This is just one example of how stores coax in shoppers," says Tyson. "Always remember that free financing for, say, a year is not a huge cost to the dealer, but it is a cost, and if you forgo it, you should be able to negotiate a lower purchase price. Retailers find that buyers are less likely to negotiate the price if they are getting a short-term financing break. Read the fine print on any deal you are considering taking

who was part of the dinner crew. “The day was an example of our students stepping up to serve their community, while also enjoying the company of our senior citizens. Many guests commented about how wonderful our students were. A guest who was here for the first time said to me ‘Seeing these wonderful students today, and enjoying this meal, makes me so glad we decided to move to Wells for our retirement." Those that helped make this event possible along with the students included Wells IGA Super Food Market (for donation of turkeys) Congdon’s Doughnuts Family Restaurant and Bakery (cooking the turkeys), Roger and June Messier (carving the turkeys), WJHS School Nutrition Services staff, Dunkin’ DoughnutsŽ in Wells (donation of coffee and napkins), Chase Farms (pumpkin gourds for table settings) and various WJHS staff members including Julie Esch, Linda Gaidimas, Assistant Principal A.J. Dufort, Kerry Georgitis, Alyse Trainor, Susie Dugovic, Rhonda Falconer, Lauren Rivera, Carroll Crouch, Leah LePage and former WJHS staff member, Beth Cilluffo.

~ News & Classifieds ~ failing in my war with ant-land and decided to place any food she was making in our microwave convinced they would attack any food she dared to place on the counter. She also made me totally responsible for the attack on her kitchen. I will never tell her I actually found one of the black assaulters in my microwave. I literally watched it explode. This made me feel whole. I was finally forced to use a professional spray to poison every inch of my home. I did this late at night in the hopes the smell would dissipate before my wife woke up. This worked

The Year of the Microscopic Ant my lawn I decided to poison it. Hopefully this did not take too many of my years of life away. Another year was the year of the “the sons of beetles. The first thing I could see was the damage. I couldn’t eat as much as they ate in one night and I have to tell you eating is something I am really good at. Most of my trees had their foliage half eaten off dead stems that were once covered with greenery smothered instead in the metallic colored insects from hell, voracious little Samurai warriors protected inside their perfect, shiny armor. . I tried to shake my trees of them but they wouldn’t move. It was as though their feet had special grips that allowed them to stick to anything they wanted. The few that fell to the ground looked up at me and dared me to step on them. So I did. My flowerbeds were next. They took the stems and leaves of my geraniums and left behind only the red flowers like the bloodied corpses of a horticultural rampage. Turning to my vegetable garden I noticed a brownish cloud hovering over my zucchini and green beans. It was as though they were circling for the kill. And kill they did.

“For the past four decades I’ve lived on the southern coast of Maine. Some sort of pest defined every one of those years. This year, the formidable foe is defined as some of the smallest creatures I’ve ever seen. Most of the time I can’t see them but having a wife who keeps an immaculate home gives me the capacity to know when every one of them dares to attack her kitchen. I am not talking about an infestation even though, if left alone, this could happen. I am talking about a dozen of the little ant-holes that appear every day. In the past I’ve battled multiple pests. I clearly remember the year of the voles. These appeared as multiple runways that connected tiny openings in my lawn. They must have lived beneath the three-foot snow pack of the past winter that decided to make its own neighborhood with all of its streets and alleys in my backyard. It was bad enough to view this carnage in my lawn but I actually watched it grow. At the peripheral of the lines of lawn that had been ground up were trails I watched pushing out into what little lawn I had left. This pest never came back because instead of fertilizing

Within seconds the entire airborne armada had descended on my garden and I could hear them munching through the fruits of my labors. In past years I’ve battled mosquitoes that took most of my blood, pigeons that decided to cover my roof with their excrements, and ticks that left viruses behind. There is no doubt this year is the year of the ant. Attempting to purchase the best mixture to combat them, I met an elderly woman at Home Depot who was in tears because she never had a pest problem before. There were few choices because most were sold out. The assistant tried to help her but saw there was little he could do for her. At first I tried to spray them. All this did was bring more on. I watched as dozens of the little tanks ran over their dead in hopes of acquiring some crumb of food I dropped after wiping the crumbs of multiple snacks off my shirt. They were tough to kill. My last attempt was to sweep them up into my garbage disposal. I assumed that would work but all it did was give them a hiding place to survive and later appear. My wife decided I was

for a couple of days but a few hours ago I observed one of the creatures actually attempt to arise from my drain. I will win. I may not survive into my seventies but I will win. For the past four decades I’ve lived on the southern coast of Maine. Some sort of pest that drives me crazy defined every one of those years. I just hope the pests from my past don’t form some sort of alliance that will be difficult, if not impossible, to defeat.
