Santa’s Alive — and Living in Wells!

David Banks

Nolan Mottor, 8, and his sister Marissa Mottor, 5, of Wells tell Santa their Christmas wishes.

By Nancye Tuttle Contributing Reporter WELLS – Santa listens carefully to Marissa Mottor and her brother Nolan as they perch on his lap and whisper their Christmas wishes to him. Marissa, 5, wants an Elsa nightgown, while Nolan, 8, craves a Wii U gaming system. Santa smiles, tells them to be good and listen to their mom, Jackie, who stands nearby, smiling back at him. This gentle scene played out

repeatedly last Friday evening as Santa, David Banks of Wells, greeted dozens of children who came to meet the jolly old elf at Santa’s Village at the Wells Recreation Park on Branch Road, a yearly family activity sponsored by the town’s Parks and Recreation Department. “We do it every year and we love our Santa. He’s the real one — just look at him, says Tina LeBlanc, recreation department director. Indeed, his beard is real and so is his plush Santa suit

and those bells on his wrists that really jingle. Minutes later, Caitlin and Mike Tenney plop Lucy and Madisyn, their 14-month-old identical twin daughters, onto Santa’s lap, hoping for that perfect photo op. And Santa keeps smiling and talking gently to the babies when one little girl crinkles her face and erupts into tears. It’s all a part of being Santa Claus, says Banks, who has See SANTA page 14...

of a Maine child. Since the Maine Chapter of Make-A-Wish opened in 1992, the cause has granted over 1,200 wishes to children with lifethreatening medical conditions. Since 2009, Dean Goodman and the staff at the Old Village Inn in Ogunquit have helped grant four-and-a-half wishes. The Old Village Inn's yearly Make-A-Wish Christmas Ball fundraiser started in 2009, and has raised about $30,000 in the last five years. This year, Goodman hopes to raise $20,000, which is enough to grant a whole

wish. The Inn will open its doors on December 19, at 7 p.m. and will feature an evening of great food, libations, music and raffles to benefit a child in Maine who is in need. “We really like that all of the money goes to Make-AWish Maine and that they use every penny to grant a wish for a child, Goodman said. While the Inn's Christmas Ball is only one night, Goodman and his staff have been working for the past three months to put the event together and raise

Berwick Scouts Collecting Dec. 12 for Charities

BERWICK – Scouting for Food/Coats for Kids is hosted by Boy Scout Troop 313, and assisted by Cub Scout Pack 313, and Girl Scout Troops of Berwick and more. These Scouts will be covering neighborhoods in Berwick on Saturday, Dec. 12th, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. During this time, scouts will be going door-to-door to collect donations of non-perishable food items such as canned and dry goods for the Community Food Pantry, which is in dire need of assistance at this time of year.

The Scouts would like to thank the Berwick community for the 2980 pounds of food collected in 2014 and would like to match or exceed that for 2015. The pantry is counting on us! What we collect lasts only a couple of months. For those who will not be home, the Scouts ask them to please leave a bag on the doorstep for pickup. Donations can also be dropped off at the cafeteria entrance of Noble Middle School (46 Cranberry Meadow Road) until 3 p.m. on Saturday. Based on the amount of volunteers, not

grams: Marine Systems, Yacht Design, and Boatbuilding, both Wood and Composite. The Landing School’s wooden boat building students are building eight classic 12 foot “Yankee Skiffs using lumber harvested in New England. The crafts’ stem, keel, chine, and rails are built with local White Oak. The lapstrake planking, seats and floorboards are constructed with durable Eastern White Pine, while the breasthook and the knees are made from Black Locust. The Landing School’s president and alumnus, Dr. Richard Schuhmann, is committed to supporting the New England economy by encouraging our programs to work with locally sourced materials which, in turn, reduce our carbon footprint as doing so minimizes greenhouse gasses associated with transportation. With this initiative, the Landing School strives to, “Build Locally and Act Globally. Assistance from the public is being sought to help combat the destructive moth through use of a simple on-line survey to report winter moth sightings. “The total economic impact of Maine’s forest industry is $8 billion with direct and indirect employment of 38,789 workers, said Governor Paul R. Public involvement will help professionals combat and minimize the destructive potential of this and other invasive species. Commissioner Walt Whitcomb stressed that filling out a simple online survey set by the Department to report winter moth sightings is very important. “These reports are critical to building the bigger picture of this insect’s distribution, said Whitcomb. “A healthy forest is key to Maine’s forest economy. Citizen involvement in monitoring invasive pests is important to the future of rural Maine. The survey can be accessed online at: http://www.maine. gov/dacf/wintermothsurvey. Reports of moth flights can also be made by phone at 207-2872431. Why Look For Moths in December? December may seem like an odd time to set up traps for a defoliating forest pest. However, during the first week of December, DACF staff will set up traps along the coast and inland in southern Maine. Towns in the study region are cooperating by allowing traps to be hung on municipal property. nightly counts of the moths trapped in their yards. Winter in Maine is quite suitable to getting winter moth observations from the public. The moth flies when it is dark— this time of year many people are still out after dark. Even if people are inside and glance out their windows, they may notice if there are small tan moths attracted to lights. The winter moth was introduced into North America from Europe in the early part of the last century. It was first seen in Nova Scotia in the 1930s and then in the Pacific Northwest (British Columbia, Oregon and Washington) in the 1970s. Winter moth showed up in eastern Massachusetts in the early 2000s and has since spread westward in MA, into Rhode Island and now coastal Maine from Kittery to Bar Harbor. It was first reported in Maine in significant numbers in December 2011. The larvae (caterpillars) of winter moth defoliate deciduous trees and shrubs such as oaks, maples, apples and blueberries, in early spring. Heavy defoliation for several consecutive years leads to branch dieback and tree mortality. Winter moth defoliation has contributed to tens of See MOTH page 21...

“The Journey to Bethlehem Drive-Through Nativity

YORK On Saturday, December 19, from 5 to 7 p.m., the congregation of First Parish Church in York Village invites the community to join them on “The Journey to Bethlehem. Ride in the comfort of your warm car through a candlelit landscape of seven tableaus depicting the Christmas story beginning with the Angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary that she would bring forth a son to Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem while shepherds keep watch and a multitude of angels proclaim “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will to all. It has become a tradition not only for those who visit, but also for the more than 130 volunteers who have made and distributed

costumes and props, built and assembled sets, strung lights, shared their livestock, provided pots of soup, lit luminaries and offered storage space. Thom Kearns, a co-chair for the event and one of First Parish’s newest members, admits, “our gift to the community is as much a gift to each of us who participate. In the midst of the holiday bustle, it is a time for reflection on the true meaning of Christmas. Follow the star

and join us on the journey, back to Bethlehem, where the story began. “The Journey to Bethlehem will take place, rain or shine, at First Parish Church, 180 York Street, York. No entrance fee or donations are requested. For more information, call 207363-3758 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; email office@firstparishyork.org; or go to the website at www.firstparishyork.net.

FBI Recovers Last of the Six N.C. Wyeth Stolen Paintings STATEWIDE The FBI, the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Maine and the Portland

Police Department are proud to announce the successful recovery of the remaining two N.C. Wyeth paintings that were stolen from a Portland, Maine businessman in 2013. The paintings are identified as “The Encounter on Freshwater Cliff and “Go Dutton, and That Right Speedily. To date, no reward money has been requested and no additional arrests have been made. However, the FBI’s investigation into the theft remains active and ongoing. The FBI recovered both of the paintings on Friday, October 9, 2015 when a third party surrendered them to retired FBI agent Jim Siracusa in the greater Boston area. That individual, who wishes to remain anonymous, directed Siracusa to turn the artwork over to the FBI, which for months has been aggressively working towards its successful recovery. Both paintings were found in good condition, inside cardboard boxes, and in their original frames. The four other paintings that were stolen were recovered by the FBI in Los Angeles last December. The criminal investigation into the robbery was initiated in June 2013 after the Portland Police Department requested the FBI’s assistance in investigating the theft of six N.C. Wyeth paintings. It is believed to be one of the most significant thefts in

Choir Presentation at South Congregational Church KENNEBUNKPORT – During the Sunday morning worship service at 10:30 a.m., on December 20, the Adult Choir of South Congregational Church, along with a string quartet and organ, will present a special musical presentation of the powerful “ Magnificat by Giovanni Pergolesi. The Magnificat is also known as the “Canticle of Mary. It is one of the eight most ancient chants and early Marian hymns. The opening words, “Magnificat anima

mea, Dominum (My soul doth magnify the Lord) are the words spoken by the Virgin Mary in a prayer of praise to God for the inestimable favor bestowed on her. The work has six movements and is a skillful combination of the Baroque polyphonic style and the emerging Classical style of the time. The first and last movements unify the work with use of the same rejoicing musical theme. This is an uplifting musical work most appropriate for the Advent Season.

Modular Origami at Kennebunk Free Library

KENNEBUNK Geometry and crafts unite at Kennebunk Free Library, 112 Main St. in Kennebunk, on Saturday, Dec. 12. Eva Szillery of Maine Mathematics Science and Engineering Talent Search will present modular origami to students from grade three through adult. Middle school and high

school students interested in engineering careers will especially enjoy the hands-on learning opportunity. Participants at the workshop can choose to create one of two different three-dimensional stars, combine multiple stars to create a wreath, or build a threedimensional 2016 desk calendar.

Instruction will be given at 10:30 a.m. and repeated at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Preregistration for a particular time slot is required. Reservations for earlier times are strongly encouraged to enable time to complete more complicated pieces. pieces. No tape, glue or other adhesive is needed. In addition to being beautiful, origami has been shown to be useful in teaching math concepts. “I got to origami from mathematics, Szillery said. “I realized that it is extremely useful in teaching math. Many have a problem learning math because it is an abstract concept. Using modular origami, the student walks away with a product in his/her hands. According to Szillery, the art of folding things has applications in the real world. For example, “scientists devise ways to fold instruments to be sent into space. Medical science uses folding techniques in order to insert devices into the body during surgery. The automobile industry uses folding to pack air bags into cars. MIT teaches classes using modular origami in their Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Department. Szillery is a member of the Maine Junior Engineering Technical Society, and founder and Director of the Maine Mathematics Science and Engineering Talent Search Program. In 2005, she received the University of Maine Educator Recognition Award for Programming Excellence for her work with the MJETS/MMSETS Programs. The program is free and wheelchair accessible. individuals, Lawrence Estrella, Oscar Leroy Roberts, and Dean Coroniti, have been charged in connection with this investigation. Estrella, 65, of Worcester, Massachusetts, pleaded guilty to Interstate Transportation of Stolen Property on February 20, 2015. He was sentenced in the United States District Court in Portland, Maine to 92 months in prison to be followed by 3 years of supervised release. According to court records, Estrella transported four of the six stolen paintings to California in an effort to sell them. Law enforcement officers in California located his vehicle in the parking lot of a hotel in North Hollywood. Estrella’s room at the hotel was searched and a firearm was located, but no paintings were found. Roberts, 37, of North Hollywood, California, the man who used the stolen paintings to secure a loan from the Beverly Hills pawn shop, pleaded guilty on February 2, 2015 and was sentenced on April 29, 2015 to serve

28 months in federal prison. Coroniti, 55, also of North Hollywood (and formerly of Boston) also pleaded guilty to possession of stolen property on March 19, 2015. He is scheduled to be sentenced in December. At the owner’s request, the recovered artwork will remain in possession of the Portland Museum of Art for visitors to enjoy. For more information about the upcoming exhibit, call 207-775-6148 or visit www.portlandmuseum.org To recover stolen items and prosecute art and cultural property crime, the FBI has a specialized Art Crime Team of 16 special agents supported by special trial attorneys. The team investigates theft, fraud, looting, and trafficking across state and international lines, with estimated losses in the billions. The FBI also runs the National Stolen Art File, a computerized index of stolen art and cultural properties that is used as a reference by law enforcement agencies worldwide.

...SANTA from page 1 played Santa for over 30 years and relishes his role. “There’s nothing you can do when they cry but smile at the camera, says Banks. “Sometimes I sing ‘Jingle Bells’ softly to the little ones and that settles them down. Banks, who lived in Littleton, Massachusetts before retiring to Wells five years ago, became Santa when he was in his 40s, thanks to a prematurely white beard and a request from his boss at the telephone company. “I had a short beard and the fellow who played Santa at the Christmas party had passed away, so they asked me to do it, said Banks. One thing led to another and soon he was donning his red suit, hat and boots for Boy Scout events and local tree lightings. Over the years, he joined several professional Santa organizations, including the International Brotherhood of Real Bearded Santas, the New England Santa Society, Northeast Santas and Red School Santas. And he’s been to Santa school too, earning a degree from the International University of Santa Claus. These days, he makes over 30 visits each year to children’s hospitals, corporate events, private parties and tree lightings in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. For some, he is compensated. But he makes many visits for the sheer joy of being Santa to kids. Proud to wear his plush Santa suits — he owns three — throughout the Christmas season, he knows how important his job is. “It’s important to make it the best experience for every child you talk to. Bringing the magic of Christmas to kids is something they’ll never forget. It’s a lot of fun and I love doing it, says Banks, no, Santa Claus. “Ho, ho, ho — Merry Christmas. Note: Santa Claus - aka David Banks - will visit various Rotary events throughout the area and will be stopping for breakfast at the York Hospital Dining Room on Friday, Dec. 11 between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. That will be his final local appearance this Christmas season.

their continued yearly success and sold out event. They plan for the event and begin fundraising months in advance and all of their hard work pays off. Certainly, a great deal of work goes towards making Old Village Inn's Christmas Ball a success, but all of the work done now will lead to the play that comes on December 20. Goodman expects in excess of 100 people to attend the event that will feature a local band, and an abundance of terrific prizes. “We try and make it fun for everyone, Goodman explained. “We like to have it set up so that people can show up in a tuxedo or in a sweatshirt and jeans and have the same great time. And while it is the work done by the team at Old Village Inn that makes this successful annual event possible, Goodman is quick to credit his surrounding community for the help they lend. “We don't ask for a lot, but the people in this town always give us what they can, Goodman said. “This town does a lot for people in need on any level. While Goodman likes to direct the praise in other directions, Leaming and the staff at Make-A-Wish Maine are sure to give credit where credit is due. “It has been fun to watch how the Inn has grown and continue to improve, Leaming said. “We are so grateful to have their support, both in fundraising and raising awareness for the community. As Goodman and the Old Village Inn staff continue to help grant the wishes of children in Maine with life-threatening medical conditions, you can get involved too. WELLS – Missing Kitty Found! Lacey, Safe Haven’s missing kitty, zapped our holiday project plans when she escaped from our thrift shop through a suspiciously opened rear window. For 25 days and nights, we’ve searched for this little Torti. We looked everywhere: under porches, in sheds, we endured stakeouts in unheated cars for 12-hour shifts monitoring traps, set up game cameras, and talked to dozens of neighbors. With the onset of winter our tiny team of volunteers had to ignore everything but catching her and bringing her back into our care. All that work and talking and posters paid off when a hero/ angel named Ann ran into our shop, convinced that the cat on her property was our missing Lacey. Sure enough, the next night, we gathered around a TruCatch trap in Ann’s nearby home. Safe inside the trap was the little escapee who had turned our world upside down.

She’s a 9-year old short-haired cat who is currently residing with our Volunteer Coordinator Marie in her office. Luna has been with us for quite some time, in fact November 18 will mark a year she has been available for adoption at our shelter. Everyone who has met her will agree that’s far too long for such a darling cat. She’s quite often a lovable, social gal. She even enjoys being picked up and held for a little while. She has taken very well to office life and loves having plenty of places to nap in and call her own, which of course includes taking over the keyboard. It has made her far happier than spending time in a kennel. Luna fancies herself a Queen at time and would very

much prefer to be the only cat in a new home. She would be happy to share a new home with cat savvy dogs and respectful children. Luna is diabetic; her condition is maintained by a steady diet of wet food as well as regular insulin injections. Maintaining See AWS page 34...

Tips for Saving Big Money During the Holidays It’s the most wonderful time of the year – and it’s also the most costly. Consumers often overspend during the holidays, and while most people intend to pay off holiday debt in January, it’s much easier said than done. It’s not uncommon for debt to linger months after the presents are unwrapped. “The hysteria of the holidays can impact even the most frugal among us, said Mike Sullivan, spokesperson, Take Charge America, a national nonprofit credit counseling and debt management agency. “The holidays are a time for making memories with friends and family – but you don’t have to spend a lot of money to enjoy the season. Conscientious giving, combined with willpower and creativity, will make a huge difference for people trying to keep their

costs in check. Sullivan offers five tips for saving money during the holidays: Make a list, and check it twice: Holiday giving is a big expense, and it’s hard to stick to a budget if you’re scrambling to find gifts at the last minute. Determine the right present for each person on your list ahead of time, and avoid the frantic overspending resulting from poor planning. Join the DIY movement: Do-it-yourself projects are all the rage. If you have the time and inclination, consider making gifts for loved ones. For grandparents, this could mean framing a child’s artwork, while coworkers might enjoy a handstamped mug and homemade hot cocoa. It’s an opportunity to give a fun and meaningful present without spending a fortune. Make a “batteries-not-

...HOMES from page 16 ventory problem. The minor dip in units sold during a 30-day period doesn’t indicate a trend. Flaherty added, “Today’s buyers are well-informed and have high expectations, so they will often overlook a home that’s presented poorly or priced above the market. Sellers must understand the importance of this to appropriately capture a buyer’s attention. Maine Realtors have been training on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s (CFPB) “Know Before You

Owe changes, which became effective for financing as of October 3. Realtors continue to offer valuable resources and trusted counsel during changes in the home buying process. Source: Maine Real Estate Information System, Inc. (d/b/a Maine Listings). Note: Maine Listings, a subsidiary of the Maine Association of REALTORS, is a statewide Multiple Listing Service with over 4,200 licensees inputting active and sold property listing data. Statistics reflect properties reported as sold in the system within the time periods indicated.

included fund: It’s often the little things that blow the budget – like buying batteries for toys and electronics, picking up lastminute accouterments for a holiday party or buying a gift for a neighbor you accidentally left off your list. No amount of planning will help you avoid these expenses altogether, so set aside a slush fund to cover the costs. Draw names: As families grow, so do expenses and this is especially true over the holidays. Instead of purchasing gifts for every last niece, nephew and cousin, draw names and find the perfect present for just one

person. You will be less stressed – financially and otherwise – and so will the rest of your family. Be careful how much you’re “saving: It’s simple to justify purchases when every last retailer is offering holiday discounts – and it’s easy to get swept up in the fun and excitement of scoring good deals – but you’re not really saving money when you buy things you don’t really need or even want. Second-guess every unplanned purchase to root out and avoid unwise spending. For more financial tips,

Roland was a member of the Bethel Christian Church in North Berwick. He had a deep love for his family and enjoyed the time he spent with them. He

was joyfully proud of his grandchildren. Roland is survived by his son, JonEthan LaChance and his wife, Shawnna, his grandchildren, Caitlin, Megan and Aarron and step grandson, Justin; his brother Thomas (James) and sister, Donna, and his nieces Lori and Audrey. Roland is also survived by his church family and friends at Bethel Church in numbers too numerous to count. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him. An hour of visitation will be held on Thursday, December 10 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Bethel Christian Church, 129 Lower Main Street in North Berwick, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Oceanview Cemetery in Wells. Friends who wish may contribute to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123 or by visiting www.cancer.org. Arrangements are in the care of the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick, Maine. Condolences may be made at www.JohnsonFuneralHomeME.com.

true for critically and chronically ill children. Last winter the Dream Factory of Maine, York Chapter received an email from Katherine’s physical therapist recommending her for a Dream. Shortly after that, Dream liaisons, Doris Winn, Margaret Scamman and Norma Clark went and met with Katherine her parents and two brothers in South Berwick. This was the Dream Factory of Maine – York Chapter’s 100th Dream. Katherine is 11 years old and has Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. At times it is difficult for Katherine to walk and she has to use a wheelchair. Kath-

erine wanted a tree house; she and her brothers came up with a design and gave to Doris, Peg and Norma. Who looked at it and said “how are we going to do this. Norma owns Norma’s Restaurant in York and was talking about it at work. Norma’s husband Curt, son Curt Jr and some other local contractors were sitting at her counter and said “we want to help. And so it began. These wonderful guys got in touch with Dan Remick at Eldredge Lumber and Hardware in York Maine and showed them Katherine’s drawing. Things went from there. Dan had an Eldredge Lumber Architect draw up a set of plans and Eldredge Lumber donated a majority of the materials, and along with donations from George Drew and Curt Clark, Jr., the building of “Katherine’s Playhouse began. Over a period of four to five Saturdays these Dream Angels gave up their weekends and donated their time to work on Katherine’s Playhouse. They decided she needed electricity. Brian Newcombe stepped right up and added electricity. Bean bag chairs, curtains, a panda bear

and other homey touches were added to make Katherine’s Playhouse a “home. With materials and labor this Playhouse would have cost $13,000, but with the generous donation of materials from Eldredge Lumber and the donation of time, labor, materials and love from; Brian Newcombe, Jesse Rutherford, Ken Marchand, Curt Clark, Sr., Curt Clark, Jr., Marty McShane, Adam Hilbourne, George Drew and Dan Remick the cost of this Playhouse to the Dream Factory was around $3,200. On Sunday, November 15, the Dream Factory had the Dream Party at Katherine’s and with a majority of our Dream Angels there to celebrate with the Dream Factory members as well as Katherine and her family and friends. A big thank you goes to Manager Heather Trodella of Hannaford in York for donating a cake and the South Berwick House of Pizza for giving a discount on pizza. Health & Fitness ...MOTH from page 8 thousands of acres of oak mortality in Massachusetts. Winter moth defoliation was first recorded in Maine in 2012. This year the annual Maine Forest Service aerial survey picked up moderate to heavy defoliation in the Cumberland County towns of Cape Elizabeth, Chebeague Island, Harpswell, Portland (Peaks Island) and Scarborough with over 10,000 acres mapped. On the ground, light to heavy defoliation could be seen in scattered locations from Kittery to Rockland. Adults are active from late November to January whenever the temperature is above freezing. Males are small, light brown to tan moths. They are attracted to lights and a chemical released by the females. Adult females are small, gray and look like a mosquito wearing a fur coat. They have reduced wings and are flightless. Females are most commonly found crawling on the trunks of trees. So if you see moths flying in December, let the Maine Forest Service know.

University of New England Prepares Students for Number One Job In America STATEWIDE – As the only dental school in northern New England, The University of New England College of Dental Medicine is uniquely positioned to prepare its students for rewarding careers in what U.S. News & World Report recently ranked the “Number One Job in America: Dentistry. U.S. News & World Report compiled a list of 2015’s 100 bestranked employment options, rating each job based on factors such as salary, stress-level, employment rate, job prospects, work-life balance and future job creation. Dentistry took the top slot overall, and in the healthcare industry as a whole. The report also noted that 23,300 new dentist jobs will be created in the next seven years, illustrating the necessity to educate future experts in the field.

Through its state-of-theart Oral Health Center, which offers hands-on experience for students and quality care for community members at affordable rates, the University of New England is consistently working to provide innovative opportunities for its students. Supervised by licensed dental faculty members, students are able to build beneficial relationships with the public, helping them form strong ties within the community that could influence them to continue practicing in underserved areas upon graduation. Not only will UNE graduates be fully poised for satisfying careers, but they will also be addressing a distinct need for dentists in the State of Maine. “UNE is the only dental school in the area, which means we have both the opportunity and responsibility to provide as many

2 cups of white sugar 1 ½ sticks of unsalted butter softened 4 jumbo eggs 2 mounded cups of fresh pumpkin meat 1 tablespoon grated orange zest The juice of 1 large orange about 3/4 cup 3 1/3 cups unbleached all-purpose Ă&#x;our 2 teaspoons baking powder 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon of salt ½ teaspoon baking soda 1 ½ cups of walnuts, chopped 1 ½ cups of dried cranberries

Directions: 1} Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease two 8 by 4 inch pans with butter. 2} Beat the sugar and softened butter

in a large bowl until Ă&#x;uffy. Add the eggs, pumpkin, and zest. Add to the sugar mixture and continue beating until well blended. 3} Sift the Ă&#x;our and add the baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and baking soda into the pumpkin mixture. 4} Fold in the nuts and dried cranberries. 5} Divide the batter between the two pans. Bake 70 to 80 minutes, or until a tooth pick inserted into the middle comes out clean and the top is golden brown. Cool on a wire rack for 10 to 15 minutes before removing from the pan. Cool completely before slicing. Serve with butter. You can also freeze this bread when wrapped in plastic wrap and placed in freezer bag for up to 3 months. 6} You can use canned unsweetened pumpkin, but I like this bread better with fresh pumpkin. Quarter your sugar pumpkin, remove the seeds and Ăžlaments, and cook in your microwave for 5 to 7 minutes with the skin down. When you can pierce the meat of the pumpkin easily, scoop it out to a 2-cup measuring cup mounded and mash well in a mixing bowl and enjoy the Ă&#x;avor. Enjoy! Submitted by Paul Parent

a small wine shop. In 1983, he took over the operations at Domaine de Chevalier after his family purchased the historic estate in Pessac-LÊognan. And he has been president of the Union des Grands Cru, the promotional body for Bordeaux's top producers, since 2012. So it's telling that Bernard's estate in Sauternes, Clos des Lunes, focuses almost exclusively on dry wines. Sauternes, of course, is the famous sub-region in Bordeaux where botrytis cinerea -- the fungus known as "noble rot" -- attacks grapes almost every year, leaving them desiccated, shriveled, and covered with fuzzy mold. Out of these beastly grapes comes the world's most famous sweet wine. Why would one of Bordeaux's most passionate ambassadors make dry wine in Sauternes? Soil and climate play a role, to be sure. But the market, no doubt, plays a larger one. Sadly, Sauternes is out of fashion. Over the past 40 years, U.S. imports of Sauternes have declined almost 70 percent. Between 2004 and 2013, according to Liv-ex, auction prices on wines from the region's top châteaux -- Coutet, Climens, Rieussec, Suduiraut, and Yquem -- dropped between 19 and 37 percent. In part, this drop is explained by changing preferences. Most of today's wine enthusiasts just don't take sweet wines seriously. Changing dining culture has also impacted sales. Structured, leisurely dinners were once more common --

and always ended with dessert wines like Sauternes or Port. Today, such indulgences are rare -- and drawn-out meals are more likely to end with coffee than sweet wine. Consumers have also moved beyond Bordeaux. Everyone still recognizes the region's significance, obviously. But for all intents and purposes, today's consumers have unlimited choices -- and are responding accordingly. The average upscale supermarket carries more than 1,500 wine selections from across the globe. Those who do drink sweet wine have plenty to choose from. To survive, many producers in Sauternes have turned to dry whites. Most major estates have always produced at least a bit of dry wine; Château d’ Yquem has produced a dry blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc -- simply called "Y" -- since 1959. But today, more producers are producing more dry wine than ever before. Producers have also worked to convince consumers that their wines needn't be pigeon-holed as dessert. Aline Baly, the Parisian-born, American-raised, third-generation proprietor of Château Coutet spends much of her time trotting the globe showing off the versatility of her wines. Indeed, this past week, I received a holiday card from Baly suggesting I pair this year's Thanksgiving turkey with Coutet. Some producers have tried to up the region's cool factor. Earlier this year, for example, three producers teamed up with Perrier, the bottled

water company, to create a wine for French nightclubs. It's designed to be mixed with sparkling water and served over ice. Other producers, targeting the same audience, have packaged their wines in 100-milliliter vials. The move towards dry wine makes sense. It's what the market is demanding and, as Olivier Bernard explained in a recent conversation, "all great sweet wine in the world once had the potential to be a great dry wine." The push to highlight the versatility of Sauternes also makes sense. Food is more varied and exotic than ever before -- and sweet wines often make the most sense. The move to sell wine through gimmickry, though, seems at odds with the tradition that distinguishes Sauternes. Few regions can match Sauternes' history. And no wines of such consequence are a better deal. So long as one is willing to forgo Yquem, savvy consumers can purchase half bottles from virtually every top producer -- many with a decade or more of age -- for less than $30. Wines from other regions of such significance cost multiples more. One must root for today's efforts to sustain the region -- and hope that serious consumers continue to find at least some space for Sauternes. SPORTS Up for A New Winter Sport? Winter sports like skiing and snowboarding are wildly popular across the globe. Athletes from both sports compete every four years at the Winter Olympics, while millions of their fellow athletes take to the slopes each winter for recreational purposes. While skiing and snowboarding may dominate the outdoor winter sports landscape, there are plenty of off-the-radar outdoor sports that are growing in popularity among people looking for something a little different. Snowkiting Much like snowboarding appeals to surfers and skateboarders, snowkiting has found a fan base among people who enjoy kiteboarding when the weather is warm. Snowkiters use kite power to glide across the snow or ice. Foil kites once dominated the snowkiting landscape, but many snowkiters now prefer inflatable kites. Snowkiting can be very dangerous, so it’s important that men and women interested in snowkiting learn the proper techniques, which can be difficult to master. Fat biking Though its name might leave much to be desired, fat biking is growing in popularity among athletes who love riding bikes but have traditionally had to put their bikes in the garage once the temperatures dip. Fat bikes are similar to traditional bicycles, but they come with oversized tires and wider rims that make it possible for the bikes to handle unstable terrain, including terrain covered in snow. Mountain biking enthusiasts may favor fat biking, as the sport allows them to traverse snow-covered trails their mountain bikes are typically unable to traverse. Ice boating For those who simply love to be out on the water, ice boating is a great way to fulfill your winter fix for sailing. Ice boats are similar to sailboats, but they are typically fitted with runners, also called skates, or skis and designed to run over frozen waters instead of through water. Ice boats tend to sail across ice-covered surfaces at high speeds, and that can make already cold conditions even colder for ice boat sailors. But many ice boat sailors find the sport is even more fun than traditional sailing. Skijoring Skijoring may be a less accessible winter sport, as it involves people on skis being pulled by a dog, horse or vehicle. The sport originated centuries ago in Scandinavia as a way for military

members to speed up the process of sharing messages. Skijoring with dogs typically involves men or women being pulled by one to three dogs, each of which is wearing a sled dog harness (men and women wear skijoring harnesses). Dogs are not controlled by reins, but rather must be motivated to keep moving by their own desire to run. A single horse is typically enough for equestrian skijoring, and horses are typically guided by a rider. Small motorized vehicles, such as snowmobiles, are typically used in motorized skijoring. Athletes need not sequester themselves indoors when temperatures dip below freezing. In fact, there are several lesser known outdoor sports athletes can enjoy this winter.

earned their spot in the SMYFL Mountain Division Championship game for the first time in 17 years! The Nov. 1 game placed the Squires in the Championship when they defeated Falmouth in overtime. The Berwick Academy girls’ varsity basketball team won their home opener, 52-24, on 12/2 against Hebron Academy. Berwick came out with a quick 8-0 run, and continued to push the ball for the remainder of the game. Reagan Kelly led the team with 16 pts and 4 steals, while Lauren Leidemann-Smith added 10 pts. Nevertheless, Noble Squires were defeated by the Gorham Grizzlies. To take part in the Championship was a great accomplishment for the team.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, Thank you for all of your kind, clear answers in your newsletter! I have one more: I would like to use a cloud back-up system for my files and photos and audio recordings, but I am not sure how to select one that would work in my situation. I use two PC laptops for my work, a larger one and a smaller, more portable one, both with Windows 7. I save files identically to both computers by a rather laborious process: When I edit File A on one computer, I save it manually to a folder on Dropbox, from which, the next time I use the other computer, I copy it into the other computer, overwriting the older version of File A. I then delete File A from Dropbox so I won’t be confused. In

effect, each computer acts as the back-up for the oter now. I would like to have an automatic cloud back-up as well, for greater security. But I don’t know how to use the cloud systems and still keep downloaded up-to-date copies of each file on each computer so that I can work with my files offline. I worry that automatic backup systems will confuse me, and that I won’t be able to keep track of whether I am working on the latest version of a particular file. Can you advise me? Thank you, Jo Dear Jo, I was going to suggest that you save your files in a OneDrive folder on your hard drive so they would automatically sync, but when I did a little bit of research on Dropbox, I

found that they have the same kind of automatic sync feature. When you install the dropbox desktop application on both computers, and login with the same username on both, any file that you save in the dropbox folder will automatically be saved and updated in the dropbox folder on the other computer. This actually saves your file in three locations. One on each computer, and one on Dropbox servers. Essentially a built-in cloud backup. Dropbox is programmed to check the folder and automatically make sure your files are the same on each device you use. Since you are using Dropbox for your work, I would suggest that you upgrade to the business edition of Dropbox. That will provide you with increased security and file recovery options. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Love your weekly advice . I am 67 and my win. 8.1 computer is always asking me to download win 10 for free. My questions are: will classic shell start menu still work, will libre office work and do I also need to re-install my AVG anti virus.

Your data is the most important thing on your computer! Photos and videos are irreplaceable, music and movies are expensive, and you have invested hours of work in your documents.

Thank you again for your wonderful advice. Tom Dear Tom, If all goes well with your Windows 10 upgrade, you will still be able to use Classic Shell, Libre Office and AVG. You might need to re-install Classic Shell, but it should automatically prompt you. Before you upgrade to Windows 10, be sure to backup your data like pictures, documents and music. While most upgrades do go smoothly, it is always best to have a backup plan just in case. Elizabeth Hi Elizabeth, Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us; especially those of us up in years who have trouble with many concepts of computing! My question is this: My hard drive failed on my Dell computer, Windows 7, but I had backed up all my files on a WD external hard drive. When I try to transfer those files to my new computer, Windows 8.1, I cannot. When I try I am asked which app I wish to use. Of course, I have no idea what app to use. Is there a way to run the .bkf files to recover my data? Thanks in advance for your help. Shelia Dear Shelia, Yes, there is a way to run

those files, all you need is the original program that you used to back them up. A quick search for the .bkf file format only showed a backup program that came with Windows XP, which doesn’t sound like your situation. A possible solution would be to try a program called, NTBackup available from Microsoft. It is possible that you used the Western digital software that came on your external hard drive, if that is the case, you will need to install that backup program on your new computer and then recover your files. This is one of the reasons that I like to use a commercial backup program like Acronis True Image. You only need to install the same backup software on your new computer in order to be able to restore the files. This is also the reason that I backup files for my customers manually, the files are not encrypted in a backup file, instead they are in folders and accessible just like they would be on your computer.
