Wells High School Girls Baskeball Honored for Humanitarian Efforts By Ethan Bukowiec Staff Reporter WELLS Before the Lady Warriors of the Wells High School Girls’ Varsity Basketball team clashed with the Wildcats of York High School in a rivalry game on Tuesday night, coach Don Abbott and his team were honored for their efforts to raise funds for Breast Care Centers at the York Hospital in Wells and York Abbott was named a Paul Harris Fellow and presented with a plaque for the designation by Wells Rotary president, Peter Leon, while the entire Lady Warriors team was given a Service Above Self award for their continued help with the foundation, “Shootin’ for a Cure.” Abbott and the team start-

9, on its long journey from the Worcester Wreath Company in Harrington, Maine bringing over 100,000 wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery and other places where they will be placed at grave sites of U.S. Military Veterans. When the convoy passed by WJHS it was greeted by hundreds of students and staff, who lined both sides of Route 1 between WJHS and Ocean View Cemetery.

Each December for the past seven years, this convoy of tractor trailer trucks, motorcycles, police and other vehicles has made a stop at Wells Junior High School on its trek to the Washington, D.C. area. In the past, convoy members have been able to stop at the school for refreshments and take part in a brief ceremony honoring veterans at Ocean View See WREATHS page 4...

those affected by breast cancer. Leon, whose son Matthew was coached by Abbott during his tenure on the Wells Mens’ Basketball team, was glad that such a prestigious award was given to Abbott. “To have orchestrated a

group of people in such a short time to raise such a huge amount of money to find a cure for such a horrific disease is such a phenomenon,” Leon said. “Abbott deserves to receive the highest award that the Rotary has to offer.” Leon also stated that the Service Above Self award, while presented to the current Lady Warriors’ Basketball team, is in recognition of past, present and future members who will continue to make a difference in their community. To cap off an already incredible evening for the Wells High School Girls’ Basketball, the Lady Warriors beat York by a score of 57-38. It was Abbott’s first victory over York during his tenure at Wells High School.

South Berwick’s Origins Celebrated in Town Hall Exhibit SOUTH BERWICK, As the town begins a year of bicentennial observances, a new exhibit in town hall chronicles the story of this community from 1713, when Berwick separated from Kittery, through South Berwick’s incorporation in 1814. Presented by the Old Berwick Historical Society, the small exhibit, entitled “Becoming South Berwick: Surviving the Revolution,” is situated by the elevators on the second floor. Those viewing the exhibit might be in for a few surprises. The center of town in the 1700s, for instance, was a couple miles from where it is today. The town meeting house stood near the corner of Brattle Street and Old South Road, now a residential neighborhood not far from the Salmon Falls River.
