Wells Chamber to Host 34th Annual Christmas Parade WELLS The Wells Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the 34th Annual Christmas Parade scheduled for Sunday, December 15. The parade steps off at 2 p.m. from the Wells Plaza and proceeds north on Route 1 to the Wells Junior High School. The theme is “Christmas Vacation”. The Grand Marshal this year is Bob Subilia of the Car-

riage House Motel & Cottages. Bob is the winner of our “Above and Beyond” Award, an award created to recognize members of the Wells Chamber of Commerce that truly go “above and beyond” their normal membership – based on their dedication, commitment, sense of community and support to the chamber throughout the year. Bob regularly and unselfishly offers his time and resources to

help make the chamber events and programs successful. York Hospital in Wells will be serving hot cocoa and cookies in front of the Junior High School gymnasium at the conclusion of the parade. There is no charge to participate. For more information, call the Wells Chamber of Commerce at 207-646-2451 or visit www.wellschristmasparade.com.

For those who will not be home, the Scouts ask to please leave a bag on the doorstep for pickup. Based on the amount of volunteers, not all the roads may be covered. So if your food donation is not picked up by 1:30 p.m., you can call 603-767-6045 to have someone pick it up or you can drop it off at the Noble Middle

School cafeteria entrance, 46 Cranberry Meadow Road, until 3 p.m. on Saturday. Scouts will also be collecting coats, boots, mittens, scarves, hats and other winter clothing items for Coats for Kids and the Community Closet. Donations of winter attire can also be dropped off at Noble Middle School on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call Boy Scout Troop 313 Committee Member Cliff Schweiger at 603767-6045.

Kennebunk Savings’ Kim Brooker and President & CEO Brad Paige present a check to Lydia Goodwin, Director of the William Fogg Library, to support the Library’s three-year capital campaign to expand the services.

ELIOT In November, Kennebunk Savings delivered a $75,000 check in support of the William Fogg Library expansion project, an ambitious redesign that creates additional space for future enrichment programming for children and adults. Driven by a 25-year history of giving to regions it serves through its Community Promise program, Kennebunk Savings stepped up with the largest donation the capital campaign has received so far. The donation will be paid out

over the next three years. Lydia R. Goodwin, Fogg Library Director, hopes the generous contribution inspires others to join the cause, too, because like many libraries, “this library provides more than just books for the community.” Last year, 5,000 people attended 617 different programs hosted by the Fogg Library— but thousands more had to be turned away due to lack of space. The expansion project will change See FOGG page 5...

complete, the expansion will increase capacity to 150 people and improve accessibility to the volumes. Apart from programming for children and adults, the library also serves as a place for speakers to present work or a meeting space for local groups. Yoga, crafts, and tutoring all happen here, because the town of Eliot lacks a dedicated community service building. The increased assembly capacity planned for in the expansion accounts for these types of events, plus enables the library to better serve local non-profits in need of space. It even generates new revenue through rentals. Goodwin says the library as-is provides a “real ROI for the entire town,” and this project will only enhance its potential. With a listing on the National Register of Historic Places and much of the original furniture from 1907 still in place, Fogg Library’s historical significance distinguishes it from other libraries in the area, and increases its popularity even more. An average of 63,264 annual visitors come through the doors — impressive for a town with a population of just 6500. Once the expansion is complete, Kennebunk Savings will be a part of the new history of Fogg Library, because a new wing will bear its name as a show of thanks for the donation.

220 Clay Hill Rd. | Cape Neddick | 2 Miles W. of Ogunquit

PORTSMOUTH, NH Broadway’s Ruth Gottschall has returned to the seacoast to step into the role of Miss Hannigan in the Ogunquit Playhouse production of Annie now on stage at The Music Hall in Portsmouth, NH. Gottschall replaces Sally Struthers who is recovering from surgery for a broken leg which was caused by a fall on an ice covered walkway earlier this week following the recent snow storms. Gottschall will take the stage the week of December 9, and through the end of the run. “Our Dear Sally will need to step out of Annie for the rest of the run to get herself back on her feet. But she will be nearby – so don’t be surprised if you see her sneak in to watch to the show! We are grateful that Sally is resting comfortably and feeling great right now. While we will miss her very much in this role, we want her to continue to rest and to enjoy time with her family and friends over the holidays. We of course look forward to welcoming Sally to our stage in 2020. With Sally’s blessing, the Ogun-

quit Playhouse is thrilled to announce that Ruth Gottschall, the brilliant Broadway actress who delighted Ogunquit audiences this past summer in Agatha Christie’s Murder On The Orient Express, has arrived in Ogunquit to take over the role of Miss Hannigan,” stated Executive Artistic Director Bradford Kenney. Gottschall made her Ogunquit Playhouse debut as Helen Hubbard this past summer in the critically acclaimed mystery, Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. On Broadway she has performed in Mary Poppins, The Music Man, Laughing Room Only, Cabaret, and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas among others. At regional theatres she has portrayed Aunt Eller in Pittsburgh CLO’s Oklahoma!, Maggie in Bucks County Playhouse’s 42nd Street, and Mrs. Tottendale in Goodspeed Opera House’s The Drowsy Chaperone. Annie is on stage now through December 22 at The Music Hall. Annie is the story of a spunky, red-headed orphan who lands a holiday stay with

Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks, a billionaire trying to do good. This delightful musical has become a worldwide phenomenon and is the winner of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. To purchase tickets, call The Music Hall box office at 603-436-2300 or visit www. themusichall.org.

Open House at the Museum OGUNQUIT Join the Ogunquit Heritage Museum (OHM) for its Annual Open House during Christmas by the Sea, Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15, 1-4 p.m. It’s the last chance to see the wonderful exhibits of 2019! The exhibit on tuna fishing brought many of the fishermen and family members in to tell a few fish tales, and to reminisce about “when we would fish we had to...!” The display on the original

Ogunquit Playhouse on Shore Road garnered a lot buzz, possibly even a book deal. People also shared stories of going to the Ogunquit Square Theatre back in the day. The museum was loaned paintings by Henry Strater that you won’t see anywhere else as they are from private collections. Henry is also a catalyst for tuna fishing becoming a big business in Perkins Cove and the Cove eventually being dredged. Henry made countless contributions

to Ogunquit that are still there today. The Ogunquit Museum of American Art being one of them. OHM is beautifully decorated for the holidays under the direction of Curator Carole Lee Carroll. Her attention to detail is exquisite including Christmas trees, crèches, menorahs, and more. Please stop by, have a refreshment, and spread good cheer! The Ogunquit Heritage Museum is located at 86 Obeds Lane in Ogunquit. For more information, call 207-646-0296.

Winter Solstice Celebration KENNEBUNK The First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church of Kennebunk (FPUU) will offer a Winter Solstice celebration at 7 p.m. on Saturday, December 21. Inspired by the Ancient Celts, this day of the year has had profound significance to humankind. Before the Pyramids of Egypt were built, the people of Ireland built a great temple in honor of the return of the sun after the longest night. The inspiration for this event is drawn from two sources: the archeological site from northeastern Ireland known as Newgrange, and the spiritual traditions handed down through the ages in the Celtic culture. FPUU will present its vision of what might have been a ritual that took

place at this ancient temple. The Winter Solstice at the FPUU has been a well-attended holiday season family event for many years. Around the world, through the ages, human beings have celebrated the season of the loss and return of the light of the sun. Each year, the wider community is invited to share, explore and honor these traditions. Admission is free and all are welcome. Those who attend are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for local hunger relief and a finger-food item for the sharing and fellowship that completes the evening. First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church is located at 114 Main St., Kennebunk. For more information, see www.uukennebunk.org.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, How do you feel about Windows 10? I have been told that it is a problem and causes trouble with their computer. I have been wanting to upgrade to a new PC but I am a little afraid of having problems with Windows 10. I would like your opinion as I trust you and I thank you for all you do. Wilma Dear Wilma, I think Windows 10 is a great operating system. With a few tweaks, it will fit the needs of just about any user. You will be able to transfer your data from your current computer to the new computer with Windows 10, but you will not be able to transfer programs. Those will have to be installed from your original install media. That might be from a CD or DVD if that is how you purchased it, or if you bought it online and downloaded it, you should be able to install it from the file that you originally downloaded. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I want to know how external hard drives work. I bought one (WD) several years ago to protect my files, but instead of storing them in the unit itself, I think it stored them in the computer somewhere. What good would that be if something happened to that computer? Are there any external hard

drives that store the information right there on that unit, a super size USB drive so to speak? Thanks for all the years of teaching. I have learned a lot from you over the years. Sincerely, Diane Dear Diane, You are right, a backup stored on your computer itself would be useless in the event of virus infection, theft, fire or even hard drive failure. You need to store your backup on a drive that can be physically disconnected from your computer. Just make sure your backup drive storage capacity is larger than your hard drive size and you should be all set. Any external hard drive with adequate space can be used

to store a backup copy of your files. You just need to setup your backup software correctly. In fact, the #1 reason backups fail is that it was not set up correctly in the first place. Most external hard drives come with their own version of backup software (some only come with a trial version) and they each work a little differently, so I can’t give you step by step directions. One thing to keep in mind though is that those backup programs save your files in their own format, and you will need that same backup program installed on your computer in order to recover the files again. For those reasons, I prefer a universal backup program like Acronis True Image. You can

Welcome Home to Annie’s!

New & Used Books Arriving Daily • Since 1985

install the program on your current PC and if you need to restore to a different computer, you can download and install it on the new PC as well. You can learn how to set up

several different kinds of backups following the directions in the downloadable user guide. You don’t have to learn a new backup program every time See COMPUTER page 22...

Over $2.5 Million for Head Start Programs in York County WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Angus King (I-Maine) announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Administration for Children and Families has awarded $1,398,216 to York County Community Action Corporation in Sanford, and $1,113,626 to Downeast Community Partners in Ellsworth for Head Start and Early Head Start pro-

grams. The programs provide free early childhood education and childcare to low-income families. “Head Start programs provide a safe, educational, and enjoyable environment for Maine’s children to make connections and learn from their caregivers and peers – and every nickel spent is a judicious investment in Maine’s future,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “In order to attend school

or participate in the workforce, parents need assurances that their children are being well cared for. This funding provides muchneeded resources to support early

childhood development in York and Hancock County, giving Maine’s kids the strong foundation they need to grow.” Head Start was established in 1965 to promote school readiness and provide a comprehensive array of health, nutritional, and

social services to eligible fourand five-year-old preschoolers and their families. Head Start services include early learning, health, and family well-being. This funding supports local agencies that provide Head Start services across the country.

What is SPF? When shopping for sunscreens, consumers will no doubt notice each bottle lists its SPF number. Numbers tend to be as low as 4 or as high as 100. But what is SPF? And what does it have to do with protecting the skin from the sun’s harmful rays? According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, SPF, which stands for sun protection factor, is a measure of a sunscreen’s ability to prevent the skin against ultraviolet B, or UVB, rays from the sun. The Skin Cancer Foundation notes that SPF works in a way that might surprise even the most devoted of sun worshippers. If it takes 20 minutes for unprotected skin to start redding, then a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 will theoretically prevent redding for 15 times longer than that — or about five hours. While that’s impressive, the Skin Cancer Foundation notes that the SPF model does spark some concern. For example, no SPF sunscreen, regardless of its number, should be expected to

remain effective for longer than two hours without reapplication. In addition, reddening of the skin is a reaction to UVB rays alone and indicates little about any damage caused by ultraviolet A, or UVA, rays. To protect themselves against both UVB and UVA rays, the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends consumers

use only broad-spectrum sunscreens with an SPF of 15 or higher. Wearing protective clothing, staying out of the sun between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and reapplying sunscreen after sweating or going into the water are other ways to protect the skin from the sun’s harmful rays. York County Shelter Programs’ Holiday Fundraiser Underway ALFRED York County Shelter Programs is announcing its annual holiday fundraising drive. “As the holidays approach, and many of us consider the gifts we will give to our families and friends, we are asking folks to consider giving the gift of a donation to York County Shelter Programs,” says Clay Graybeal, YCSP’s Acting Executive Director.

YCSP provides emergency shelter to homeless adults at its Alfred shelter and homeless families at its Sanford shelter. The agency, which was created 40 years ago, works to help people change their circumstances so that they will no longer be homeless. “We offer resources such as therapeutic services, counselling and treatment for substance abuse, job skills training and connections

to other community resources,” Graybeal says. “We help people transition into permanent housing.” Last year YCSP gave shelter to 700 people. The agency also operates a food pantry that feeds about 3,000 people every month. As a non-profit, YCSP relies on grants and donations in order to operate. “We feel fortunate that we have had continual

Tips For Making Braces More Comfortable Many children and adults wear orthodontic braces. Braces can straighten teeth and improve bite health. While adults who wore braces years ago as youngsters likely recall being apprehensive about their appearance back then, thanks to advancements in braces technology, today’s orthodontic braces are less noticeable than braces of yesteryear. In addition, modern braces even feature more effective wires and brackets that can reduce the duration of treatment. According to Harvard University Health, the science of orthodontics and braces involves placing constant pressure on teeth. The root then presses against the underlying alveolar bone, forcing a portion of the bone next to the root to dissolve, allowing the tooth to incrementally move into the direction it is pushed. After the tooth migrates, new bone will replace the spot where the tooth vacated. Due to the pressure braces exert, it is common for people who wear braces to experience discomfort. Soreness and discomfort typically occurs when braces are initially put on the teeth and then after various appointments if adjustments are made. The brackets and wires of the braces also may rub the gums or irritate other areas inside the mouth. Thankfully, there are ways to make wearing braces more comfortable. Check for comfort before leaving. During each orthodontist visit, use a finger or your tongue to check for any areas that are poking cheeks or rubbing gums. Bring this to the orthodontist’s attention so that wires can be clipped very short. Invest in orthodontic wax. Use the wax to cover up brackets or wires that are causing irritation. Over time, the

support from the people living in our communities all these years,” Graybeal says. “That support has changed lives.”

BUSINESS & FINANCE Top Financial Resolutions for Generation Z

Financial goals are likely top of mind for the oldest members of Generation Z — those born after 1997 — with 72% of them feeling stressed about money, according to the 2019 Future of Money Study. “For those just getting started in their careers, personal finances can seem overwhelming, but they don’t have to be,” said Michael Sullivan, a personal financial consultant with Take Charge America, a national nonprofit credit counseling and debt management agency. “Taking the time to fully understand their financial situation and set realistic goals will help young adults build confidence — and have fun — with their money.”

Sullivan shares four financial resolutions for Generation Z: Create (and Follow!) a Budget: Hands down, the most recommended financial tool is a budget. To budget effectively, you need a complete picture of what’s going out and what’s coming in. Track every expense – down to the penny – for 30 days to get a realistic sense of spending. Use this information to allot how much money should go toward each budget category, noting your personal goals such as building an emergency fund or paying off debt. You can use a good ole spreadsheet or variety of mobile apps. Find the right student loan repayment plan: Upon graduation, federal student loan bor-

rowers are transitioned to a standard repayment plan, which may not be the best solution. Graduates need to identify the right repayment option for their individual circumstances – typically an income-driven plan. For guidance, connect with a nonprofit student loan counseling agency. Build an emergency fund: An emergency fund serves as a buffer between you and credit card debt, reserving funds that are solely for emergencies, such as car repairs or medical expenses. We recommend saving three to six months’ worth of monthly expenses in a liquid savings account. That might seem difficult, but saving about $20 a week for a year will net you $1,000 – a big boost to that fund. Start retirement savings: If you have access to a 401(k), be sure to sign up and start saving. Your age is a huge asset when it comes to retirement — take advantage! If you don’t have a 401(k), consider opening an IRA. Contributing just $25$50 a month will pay dividends down the road. For more financial tips and guidance, check out Take Charge America’s Financial Education Center or take a free online debt review.

Take Charge America, Inc. is a nonprofit agency offering financial education and counseling services including credit counseling, debt management, student loan counseling, housing counseling and bankruptcy counseling. I have also noticed that good backup programs like Acronis have more powerful features than many of the programs that come with external hard drives. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am using WIN 10 on my laptop and wonder if you can suggest a free program similar to MS Word that I can use for document/letter writing, etc. I don’t want to have to pay the price for MS, and I don’t need all the other things like Excel and the others in Office. I think I remember you suggesting some replacements a while back, but can’t remember the names of them. I am a senior and not very computer-savy, so if you could also tell me how to download and get such a program up and running it would be a big help. Thank you, Bob

Dear Bob, The simplest thing to use would be WordPad which is already installed on your Windows computer, all you need to do is find it. Here is how: 1. Tap the windows logo key on your keyboard, or click on the start menu button. 2. Once you have opened the start menu screen, type the word, WordPad and a search will appear on the right side of the screen. 3. WordPad will be listed in the search results. Click on it to open the program. 4. Once you have opened WordPad, you can keep a shortcut to it on your taskbar. Just right click the icon on your taskbar, and click to select, “Pin This Program To Taskbar”. Now, when you close WordPad, you can open it any time by clicking once on the taskbar icon. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Could you please tell me how to convert a biz file from my old Creatacard gold 8 to a file my friends can open in their mail? Thanks you, you are so helpful! Carol

Richard M. Chase Sr., 83 WELLS – Richard M. Chase, Sr. born December 12, 1935 in South Berwick passed away on December 3, 2019 in Wells. He was a graduate of Wells High School. He and his devoted wife of 62 years, Elizabeth (Earls) Chase, were also childhood friends and often talked of the many fond memories attending the Division #9 school in Wells. Dick was a direct descendent of the first settler in the town of Wells. He pridefully lived, farmed, and logged the Littlefield-Chase Homestead for many years just as his ancestors did. Dick and his wife owned and operated Pine Tree Gardens and Gifts together for 35 years. He then helped build and operate Chase Farms with his son until his death.

His biggest joy was his six children and their families: Rhonda and Keith Falconer, Richard, Jr. and Belinda Chase, Brenda and Bruce Topol, Eric and Caroline Chase, Matthew and Sophia Chase, and Betsy and Charles Vanner; grandchildren Haven, Linsey, Marty, Sarah, Merle, Olivia, Anya, Matthew, Kolby, and Alexis. There will be a private family service at a later date at the Littlefield-Chase cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick. • • • • • • • • • •

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, December 15, at the Ogunquit Baptist Church, 157 Shore Road, Ogunquit, with Reverend Jeff Patnaude officiating. A reception will following immediately

he was surrounded by his loving family, sister and devoted friend Dennis Lepene of Farmington, NH. Edward was born on January 10, 1953 to his loving parents Edward Mros Jr. and Elizabeth Currier Mros of Farmington. He graduated from Farmington High School in 1971 followed by a short time at UNH before proudly serving the U.S. Navy (1972-1978) and marrying his beloved wife Christina Trafton of South Berwick. Ed dedicated his last 40 years of hard work to Salmon Falls Nursery and Landscaping where he became well-known and a familiar face to many other hard workers across New England. He enjoyed all things nature, with a special passion for hunting and fishing with his sons, grandsons, nephews, and friends. He especially loved spending time teaching his grandsons Austin, Kaden, and Hunter, the skills and traditions of fish and game. Ed’s other favorite pastimes included being surrounded by family, listening to music, shooting the breeze with his friends and reminiscing about the good ole days, telling a wise joke or two, reading war stories, and he had a special affinity for drawing and sketching cartoons, animals, landscapes, buildings, and logos for friends and family. E.J. is survived by his loving wife Christina Mros of 41 years; beloved children and their partners, Rebecca Mros and Craig Langill, Jesse Mros and Mandy Perry, Korie (Mros) Rego and Cody Mros; cherished

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Wells on the marsh. She loved Maine. She was surrounded by the beauty of the ever changing marsh from the emerald green in the spring and summer, the purple beauty of the sea lavender to the oranges of fall. She enjoyed the snowfall that covered the marsh like a white blanket in the winter. The sunrises, deer, osprey, bald eagles, which she watched from her scope, and the moon’s glow over the high tides added to her joy of living in Maine. Linda also enjoyed sitting on the bench in the front yard. Many conversations were had from wildlife to people and anywhere in between. Even when she returned to California Linda spent time looking at the Wells web cams. She loved grabbing lunch and heading to the beach with her beloved Solo to watch the waves roll in and out. She was a people watcher and could easily strike up a conversation with any passerby. She belonged to a book club in Wells and enjoyed their gatherings at local restaurants. She loved spending Thanksgiving with friends in Wells. She felt blessed during these times. She will be missed by her family, friends and especially her beloved Solo and her “Team”. Linda will be buried in Florida near her husband Olen who passed away in 2012.

Enjoy More Time Outdoors (Even When It’s Cold) The amount of time people spend outdoors has dramatically decreased, as the Environmental Protection Agency now reports the average American spends 87 percent of his or her time in a residence, school building or workplace. may not come into contact with surface germs or develop various illnesses spread as often as those who spend a lot of time indoors. Cold weather can make the desire to be outside less appealing, but it is important for one’s mental and physical wellbeing to get outside. The following activities might coax people outside for some crisp air. Create snow critters. Why do snowmen and women get all of the fanfare this time of year? Just about any living or fictional creature can be molded from snow and embellish landscapes. Use food-grade coloring in spray bottles to added even more creative flair to snow designs. Go on a nature hike. While many plants and animals hibernate in winter, there is still plenty to see. Bring along a sketch book or camera and capture nature in winter. Whitewashed hills can be beautiful to behold, and many small animals and birds look even more vivid against the white backdrop of snow. Make an obstacle course. Turn an area of the yard or

park into a homemade obstacle course. It’s much more difficult, — and a great workout — to try to jump over snow mounds or run down paths when decked out in warm layers. Engage in lighthearted competitions with friends and family members. Build a bonfire. Children can set off in different directions to gather up firewood to craft a bonfire with adults in a safe location. S’mores taste equally delicious whether it’s warm or cold outside, and in winter they can be accompanied by toasty mugs of cocoa. Get sporty. Sledding, skating, snowshoeing, and ice hockey are just a few of the winter sports that can get the heart pumping and muscles working outside. These activities are entertaining and also great exercise. When venturing outdoors in winter, dress in layers. This way clothing can be put on or taking off to reduce the likelihood of hypothermia. ...HAVEN from page 21 other pets, but always do so carefully and gradually. It’s also the perfect time to choose a name and teach your kitty to know it! This can simply be done by positive reward with a scratch behind their ears and verbal praise when your kitty comes to you as you call their name. These young adolescents are already expert with playing games like laser mouse and batting at wand toys. Some, like Houdini, have special skills such as escaping whenever an opportunity presents itself. Smart and sharp these young kitties are, and by playing with them you not only grow a bond but help them learn new skills and talents! Santini, Tot and Tucker are beautiful black short haired females and have just a locket of white on their chests and some on their belly. Houdini, a male, is also short-haired but black and white. All are beautiful, healthy and love to play with each other. Each one is the other’s BFF after their rough and tumble antics come to a lull. They curl up nestled with the others and drift into a happy, relaxed sleep. A comfy bed that accommodates two might be a great gift. Thanks to all the TLC these kittens have received from Safe Haven’s devoted volunteers,

these kitties trust people and love being held and fussed over. They will add so much joy and love to your home. These fully bonded young kitties must be adopted in pairs. Our adoption fee for kittens is $100 each. Please call 207-6461611 or 207-229-8314 to arrange to see them at our shelter and to apply, or you may apply online at www.safehavenhumanesociety.org. Our shelter is still temporarily closed to the public but appointments can be made to visit the kitties to consider adoptions by calling 207-646-1611. Because cat care is all the more needed during a quarantine, we’re seeking additional volunteers who want to lend a helping hand during this difficult time. During winter our team is smallest, and now is the time our need is greatest. Please help us do all the laundry, cleaning and sanitizing that’s needed. We also need socializers to volunteer now. Socializing involves working with kitties to boost their confidence. Socializers are also asked to participate in necessary tasks such as scooping and replenishing water bowls, etc. Many hands make light work keeping our shelter maintained and operational. If you truly love kitties and are willing to lend a helping hand, please call today!

...BRACES from page 15 thodontist will recommend that you avoid certain foods that can damage or get caught in the braces. Eating these foods can make it even more uncomfortable to have braces on. Practice good hygiene. Braces create more crevices and spots where bacteria can accumulate, which could lead to dental caries. Be sure to floss and brush thoroughly to keep the teeth clean to avoid painful cavities. Having braces means experiencing some discomfort along the way. However, pain and soreness can often be alleviated using a few simple strategies. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.
