Jeff & Mandy DeBuigne By Nancy McCallum, Staff Writer ELIOT Talk about a lure – after casting about for a few years looking for the right business opportunity, Jeff and Mandy DeBuigne jumped at the chance to purchase Al’s Goldfish Lures Company. The young couple, both avid anglers, had been working at corporate jobs in the nuclear waste remediation industry. “While they were good jobs, and we appreciated the benefits of a corporate employer, we had a desire to be more in control of our own destiny and to own a business,” says Jeff DeBuigne. “We also wanted to move to Maine, because it’s ‘the way life should be.’” He is a native of the Pacific Northwest, while she is from the Southwest. The couple now live in Berwick, and their

Cast An Alluring Fish Tale company’s headquarters are in Eliot. Al’s Goldfish Lure Company has a storied reputation. Al Stuart of Indian Orchard, Massachusetts designed the lure – also known as a “spoon” – in 1952. The lure is aerodynamic to make casting easy, even in windy conditions. With its goldfish shape, the lure can be pulled to swim naturally, or it can be twitched by the angler to dart erratically. Stuart first sold the lure at his sporting goods store, and over time found distributors and created a catalogue. Besides lures, he also designed hook covers, also known as hook bonnets. The company flourished, selling a million lures annually, from 1953 onward. Stuart ran the business until he died in 1984; his daughter and son-in-law

then took it over. The business was sold in the 1990s to John Occhialini of Massachusetts, who enhanced the lure design by using 22-carat gold-plating. In 2006, Field & Stream included Al’s Goldfish Lure in their list of 50 of “the greatest lures of all time.” The following year, the magazine included it in their list of Top 10 trout lures. Occhialini retired in 2015, and sold the business to Mainer Mike Lee. The DeBuignes bought the company from Lee in February of 2018. The couple are not making any major changes to the company products – they offer seven types of lures, which are used to land freshwater fish includSee LURES page 2...

The couple says it is important to them that lures continue to be manufactured in the United States - the blanks are made in Massachusetts, the paint is applied in Rhode Island, the split rings are made in Wisconsin, and orders are processed in Eliot. “That’s a big deal to us and to a lot of our customers who support domestic manufacturing and job retention,” Jeff DeBuigne says. The couple also want to contribute to their local

communities – one way they do that is by hiring employees through a job program for people with disabilities. A lot of work goes into making a lure. The metal blanks, made of marine brass, are then plated in gold, nickel or copper, then polished, and then handpainted. The lures are then baked (some designs are baked three times) and a clear finish coat is applied. The end result is a nearly indestructible “bait” that will attract fish through

their movement and reflection of light. Mandy DeBuigne says the changes they want to make are about increasing their customer base. “We often say that our flagship product, the Goldfish, is one of New England’s best kept secrets,” she says. “It is our plan to expand the brand into other regions in the U.S.” To that end, they have been busy attending shows around the country. Mandy DeBuigne also says it is a goal to attract more young people and women to this sport. As it is, fishing is one of the country’s most popular forms of outdoor recreation, with an estimated 50 million Americans casting a line in 2017. Nearly two-thirds of the anglers are men; the number of youngsters fishing has been declining for years. “It is our goal to not only encourage women to get involved, but to encourage all people of all ages, backgrounds

and abilities to try it out and get hooked,” DeBuigne says. “Getting out on the water is therapeutic, and it’s exciting to see what kind of treasure you might reel in with every cast.”

Both of the DeBuignes have been fishing since childhood; together they have shared many fishing expeditions. Since moving to Maine they have also taken up lobstering, much to the appreciation of their guests. Their time on the water is rather limited, however, as they tend to business. “So far it’s been a positive, but sometimes overwhelming experience,” Jeff DeBuigne says of their new endeavor. “We have learned so much, and continue to learn more every day. The fishing industry has a seasonal life cycle, and we have now almost weathered a whole year of that cycle and are feeling much better prepared for the 2019 spring season. The downside to manufacturing fishing lures is that we are super busy when everybody else is out on the water fishing and enjoying our products.” Al’s Goldfish lures are sold at several local retailers, and are also available at www.alsgoldfish.com. The DeBuignes are also introducing a holiday gift card on their website.

Kennebunk Announces New Online Citizen Engagement Forum

KENNEBUNK The Town of Kennebunk has launched an exciting, new, interactive platform designed to help the Town better connect with its citizens. Called “Community Voice,” the new feature paves the way for residents to submit ideas and suggestions, respond directly to local government officials through the mu-

nicipal website, and to have detailed and organized discussions around local issues. This is a timely venture since the Town is currently working through a revision to its Comprehensive Plan. “A comprehensive plan is a document that contains information about community resources, creates strategies for develop-

ment based on a community’s wants and needs, and develops Goals, Policies & Strategies to try and implement them. The plan, which contains information generally limited to a 10 year timeframe, will eventually be adopted by the voters,” said Chris Osterrieder, Community Development Director. “Getting feedback from our residents

is vitally important at this stage in the process. We want to hear from as many people as possible in whatever way people are able to participate.” A series of public meetings and forums are scheduled to be held in the coming weeks throughout Town, but the Community Voice feature allows people to log on to the Town’s website and provide comments at their convenience. “Our community has a lot of busy people and attending meetings and forums in-person is not always feasible. Community Voice is another tool in our toolbox to reach people on their terms and engage with them,” said Osterrieder. The Town has created 12 different discussion points under the category of “Comprehensive Plan Update - 2018,” each with their own set of “ideas” with several questions to consider. “We posed questions to generate dis-

cussion around the various chapters of the Comprehensive Plan,” explained Town Planner John Stoll. “Do you think the population spike due to tourism during the summer months is positive or negative for the Town? Do you experience transportation challenges living in Kennebunk? Should the Town be making an effort to explore affordable housing options for families and seniors? Do you believe a user fee based program such as Pay As You Throw (PAYT) can be equitable? These are just some of the questions we’re asking.” Residents wishing to join the conversation can visit: www. kennebunkmaine.us/CommunityVoice, sign in, and create an account. Users can also log in via their Facebook account. Participants can choose to join one or more of the discussions, answer the questions posed, ask new questions, or just provide comments. ~ News ~ Area Women Raise Funds for Causes While Having a Good Time WELLS For the past five years, a group of women in the Wells/ Ogunquit/Sanford/Ber wick area has met on a quarterly basis to raise money for local individuals and families in need and nonprofit organizations, while also enjoying socializing with each other. The group, known as Women Who Drink and Do Good (more on the name a little later), was formed by local residents Susan Kanak, Erin Haye, and Paulette Millette. Today, WWD&DG has grown to the extent that it has raised over $15,000 that has been distributed to local families and organizations. “Our goal was to provide not only financial support, but to go beyond that,” Kanak said.

“We wanted to do more than money alone and give people and organizations an idea that they were valued and respected in the community.” Kanak got the idea from her niece, Karen Calandrelli of Burlington, Mass., who participates in a group of women there, known as Womenade, that supports families experiencing financial, health, or other challenges. As a first step, Kanak contacted a neighbor, Erin Haye, about establishing a similar group in the Wells area. Paulette Millette, a colleague of Haye’s at York County Community College, expressed interest in the idea as well. The trio met in Dec. 2013 and decided to launch the effort. Their idea was to invite women

to an occasional cocktail party at which donations would be accepted toward a local cause, either a family in need or an organization that targeted a cause the group supported, preferably a small, grassroots agency. They also decided to keep the organization informal and not incorporate, thus eliminating administrative costs. Everything is done voluntarily. Determining their name was the first order of business, though. After a lengthy discus-

~ Library News ~ ...BILL from page 6 Services Act of 2018 renews and builds on the $240 million commitment to the federal museum and library programs administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), an independent federal agency that helps museums and libraries across the country advance their educational missions, deliver services, preserve history, and make their collections more accessible. The U.S. Senate sent a strong bipartisan message on the importance of robustly supporting the federal agency that helps museums and libraries better serve their communities. IMLS supports programs at more than 120,000 libraries and 35,000 museums nationwide. “Public libraries and museums are central community institutions in Maine and throughout the country. Increasingly, libraries have emerged as hubs not just for literacy and Internet access, but for workforce support and access to important information. The bipartisan Museum and Library Services Act represents a commitment to supporting libraries and museums that do more than accumulate artifacts – they tell stories that enrich our communities and inspire the minds of future generations,”

said Senator Collins. “Our bill would bolster that commitment, and I will continue to work with Senator Reed to ensure that libraries and museums across the country receive this vital support.” This bipartisan bill highlights the role of libraries and museums as community hubs equipped to meet ever evolving community needs. Updating the law to help museums and libraries improve their technology, enhance collaboration, and better serve the public and communities, the reauthorization bill will: Strengthen the use of data driven tools to measure the impact and maximize the effectiveness of library and museum services, build capacity, and better tailor local services to address and meet community needs. Enhance IMLS’s collaborative efforts with an expanded number of federal agencies to fully leverage the role of libraries and museums in supporting and meeting the needs of Americans. Increase the reservation for Services for Native Americans to more closely match appropriations. Recognize the roles of libraries as community hubs, serving evolving and diverse community needs (including those

Support Needed for Fort Foster Signage Project

KITTERY Fort Foster, Kittery’s popular public park, has many stories to tell. There are points of interest everywhere you look – from the historic fort, to the sweeping panoramas of Kittery Harbor with its lighthouses and life-saving station, to the abundant wildlife and marine life found within the park. However, information about these intriguing places and animals is scarce. As a result, the Fort Foster Committee seeks to raise funds for a comprehensive signage project which will enhance the park experience for locals and visitors alike, while conveying key information. These large, full-color interpretive signs will be placed at

key points around the park and made to withstand the elements. The goal is to have these signs installed by late spring of 2019. To make the sign project a reality, the public is invited to contribute. Those donating half the cost of a sign, or the full cost of a sign, will have their names tastefully presented on the sign. Donors can pick the sign they wish to sponsor. A list of signs is available from the Fort Foster Committee. Please contact Gale Turner, project chair, at 207-4390550 to learn more. People can support the project by donating any amount through the Kittery Maine Improvement Fund. This nonprofit fund is set up to accept donations

~ News ~ Coalition to Promote Computer Science Education for all Maine K-12 Students PORTLAND A Maine coalition supporting computer science education for all Maine K-12 students launched at Educate Maine’s 2018 Education Symposium in Portland. Computer Science for Maine (CS4Maine) formed to ensure computer science is a subject area offered to all Maine K-12 students. Founding organizations of the coalition include the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, Microsoft, Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance, Code. org, and Educate Maine. Additional coalition members currently include 13 business, non-profit, and higher education entities with more organizations joining each day. In today’s ever-increasing digital economy, computer science is a basic skill needed by all students for success in the future. Hadi Partovi, the founder of Code.org said in an interview with Recode, “Whether you want to become an accountant, a doctor, a lawyer, a politician, you wouldn’t not study biology because you’re going to become a lawyer. You still learn the basics about everything, and learning computer science and coding is about as foundational a skill you can

learn in the 21st century.” In addition, computing occupations are a part of nearly every industry including healthcare, manufacturing, and information technology. According to Code.org, computing occupations are the number one source of all new wages in the U.S. and make up 58 percent of all projected new jobs in STEM fields. Maine currently has more than 1,000 open computing jobs with an average annual salary of over $79,000, significantly higher than Maine’s average salary of $45,300. Salaries from these job openings total $85,377,720 each year. Despite the high number of open computing jobs in Maine and that computing jobs are a part of nearly every industry, fewer than 30 percent of Maine’s K-12 schools offer computer science education. Maine also does not count computer science courses toward high school graduation requirements. Only 23 Maine high schools offered an AP Computer Science course in the 2016-17 school year. In 2017, 246 Maine students took an AP Computer Science exam, fewer than any other STEM subject area. Maine also has low levels

of participation in computer science education among traditionally underrepresented students, such as females and minorities. CS4Maine’s five key objectives to ensure computer science is a subject area offered to all Maine K-12 students are: Fund computer science professional development for Maine teachers, Offer computer science in all Maine high schools by 2022, Offer computer science learning opportunities in all grade levels by 2025, Allow computer science courses to count toward high school graduation requirements in schools See COALITION page 11...

The American Alliance of Museums reports that there are nearly 850 million visits per year to American museums, and that U.S. museums inject approximately $21 billion into the economy each year. ...FORUM from page 4 “I have the good fortune of working with many citizens and stakeholders on various projects and initiatives. By far the biggest challenge I am faced with is not in finding the solutions, but finding ways to engage citizens so they are collectively sharing their views to help formulate the best solution for them and the community. Community Voice changes that and lets the citizen share their views, thoughts and ideas to help us serve the community better,” said Osterrieder.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I have a Win 10 desktop that no longer has the square icons when it opens. How do I get them back? When it opens it just has my background and my little icons for the programs I use most often. I must have done something wrong. I hope there is an easy fix. Thank you for your time, Geri Dear Geri, It sounds like you might have hidden the desktop icons. Here is how to fix the problem.

1. Right-click on a blank spot on your desktop. 2. In the context menu that appears, point to “View”. 3. A sub-menu will drop down. In that sub-menu, click “Show Desktop Icons”. Your desktop icons should now be visible. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, I have a brand-new Lenovo AIO-330 computer -- it runs slower than my old laptop! I used Edge browser as it recommended and reviewed programs to be sure nothing strange is on the

Dear Peggy, Adding more RAM to your computer would probably make it faster, but there are a couple of things to ask yourself first. 1. How much RAM does the computer currently have? I usually tell people that they should have at least 8GB of RAM, and I usually have more. My current computer has 32GB. A quick way to tell how much RAM is on your computer is to open File Explorer and Right-Click on “This PC” in the left column. Click “Properties” in the context menu and a page will open up with information about your computer including the amount of RAM. 2. Is the hardware on your computer in good condition? While it is rare that a hard drive would be bad on a brand new computer, it is not impossible. A classic symptom of a failing hard drive is a slow computer. I would get the hard drive tested to make sure that it is not a problem. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, Can you help me get BING completely off my computer? I hate it and the way it just takes over your computer. Thanks, Lynda

Dear Lynda, Bing is a product of Microsoft, so of course they want it to be part of your life. You can, however, get rid of it completely. Lets start by removing any Bing toolbars or search items in the Control Panel. 1. The easiest way to get to the Control Panel in Windows 10, is to tap the windows logo key on your keyboard, then type, “Control Panel” in the search box, and click on Control Panel in the search results. 2. Once in the Control Panel, click on, “Uninstall a Program”. 3. It might take a minute for all your installed programs to load, but once they do, find any Bing products, click on it once, then click, “Uninstall” in the toolbar at the top of the list. 4. Repeat if there is more than one Bing product in the list. Once you have removed products there, it is time to remove Bing from your browser. 1. Go back to the Control Panel, and click on, “Network and Internet”. 2. Click on “Internet Options”. 3. In the Internet Properties dialog box, start on the, “General” tab and make sure your home page is set to a page you want. Change it if necessary. 4. Now, click on the, “Programs” tab and click the button that says, “Manage addons”. 5. Look through the list of toolbars and extensions and disable any unwanted items. 6. Click on, “Search Providers” in the left column, click on “Bing” in the right column, then click

Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am starting up a homebased business and need to find an inexpensive [free is good] online contact manager software. All I need are the basics of contact management including quick contact entry and retrieval, a to-do list, that could possibly link to something like Gmail. For very many years I have been enjoying and learning a lot from your site. Thanks, Steve Dear Steve, Since you mentioned Gmail, I thought why not use Gmail contacts as your contact manager, and Gmail Tasks for your tasks. To access your contacts in Gmail, look in the upper-right corner of your Gmail page. You will see a square made up of 9 smaller squares. Click on that icon, and from the drop down list, click on, “Contacts”. While viewing your Contacts list, you can click on “Create Contact” and fill out the information for you contact. You can also double click on any contact in your list to add or change information for the contact. You can create groups (Google calls them Labels) and assign a contact to one or more groups. Once you have your contacts set up, you can move on to Tasks. To access your tasks go back to your Gmail page and look at the very right-hand edge of the window. You will see several very small icons going down the side of the page. If you point to the blue-round icon, you will see the word, “Tasks” appear. Click See COMPUTER page 13...

Local Author Announces Release of New Robert Fulton Biography YORK People often speak of creating a business guided by principles of faith — the kind of company setting where employees can grow, develop and flourish. But just how does one do that? In “Called to a Different Purpose: The Story of Robert Fulton and His Vision for Web Industries” (published by WestBow Press), award-winning author Kevin Belmonte shares the inspiring story of entrepreneur Robert Fulton, who built a company based on Christian tenets which flourished under biblical ideals.

Fulton’s approach to building a successful company stands in contrast to often-told stories of corporate greed. Belmonte demonstrates how Fulton, with no template for how to foster a work culture that values corporate philanthropy, worked tirelessly to establish model principles when he founded his company, Web Industries, in 1969 — effectively drafting the blueprint for future Christian business leaders to follow. “So many wonder what it’s like to live out one’s faith in the marketplace,” says Belmonte.

“For all the days of his life in business, Robert Fulton did just that. There are many lessons to be learned, many rich moments to be discovered, in following his story.” Kevin Belmonte has twice been a finalist for the John Pollock Award for Christian Biography, and in 2003, he won that award for his biography of William Wilberforce. His other books include literary biographies of G.K. Chesterton and John Bunyan, and in 2014 his widely acclaimed biography, “D.L. Moody,” was hailed as a “New and Noteworthy Book” by Christianity Today. For several years, his biography of Wilberforce has been required reading for a course on character and leadership at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. On several occasions, he has served as a script consultant for the BBC, and also for the PBS documentary, “The Better Hour.” For six years, he was the lead script and historical consultant for the critically-acclaimed film, “Amazing Grace,” working closely with Oscar-nominated screenwriter Steven Knight. “Called to a Different Purpose” is available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble in both hard and soft cover. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Grammy Winning Cellist to Perform at The Dance Hall KITTERY On Saturday, December 15 at 7 p.m. The Dance Hall in Kittery presents Mike Block a cellist, singer and composer who is a Grammy Award-winning member of the Silk Road Ensemble. Block’s solo show features a mixture of original compositions and songs, arrangements of traditional folk music, and classical selections that draw inspiration from his diverse collaborations with artists such as cellist Yo-Yo Ma, fiddler Mark O’Connor, Indian tabla player Sandeep Das, and pop stars such as will.i.am, Stevie Wonder, and Bon Iver. Mike Block is a pioneering multi-style cellist, singer, composer, and educator, hailed by Yo-Yo Ma as the “ideal musician of the 21st-Century,” and acclaimed by the NY Times for his “vital rich-hued solo playing”. While still studying at the Juilliard School, Mike joined Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, with which he has toured extensively throughout the world, and won a 2017 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. Mike is also an active recording artist of original material, folk music, cross-cultural collaborations, and he has an ongoing project to record all of the Bach cello suites in acoustically glorious bathrooms of famous concert halls, via BachInTheBathroom.com. As one of the first wave of cellists to adopt a strap in order to stand

and move while playing, Mike was the first standing cellist to perform at Carnegie Hall, using a cello strap of his own design, called the Block Strap, a performance which the NY Times called “Breathless... Half dance, half dare.” Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door and can be purchased at www.thedancehallkittery.org. Concert opens at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Wanted: Music Director and Pianist for 26th Annual Production of “To God be the Glory” YORK In what has become an annual Lenten tradition for many local Catholics, “To God Be the Glory,” the musical depiction of the life of Christ held at St. Christopher Church in York, is preparing for its 26th edition in 2019. The production, featuring over 100 musicians, singers, and actors, has become an institution in the area since its first performances in 1994. The 2019 performances are scheduled for April 4 - 6 at 6:30 p.m. and April 7 at 3 p.m. The show runs around 90 minutes. In 2019, most of the cast is expected to return, but organizers seek a music director and a pianist to join the team. “This could be one person or two people,” said Kathy Leroux, daughter-in-law of the show’s founder, Rita Leroux. “Cast and choir ensembles consist of mainly non-professional, talented individuals assisted by professional sound and lighting.”

“Choir rehearsals are scheduled to begin in late February or early March,” said Theresa Palumbo, one of the show’s organizers. “And there are six full cast rehearsals scheduled to

Knights of Columbus Raise $40,000 to Fund Ultrasound for Pregnancy Center YORK COUNTY An initiative that launched on Mother’s Day Weekend this past May will compassionately help expecting mothers in the area for years to come. Knights of Columbus councils in Kennebunk, Wells, Biddeford, Sanford, and Springvale teamed up to raise $40,000 for a new ultrasound at the Alpha Pregnancy Resource Center in Sanford. Knights distributed empty baby bottles to parishioners who wished to help the cause. Individuals and families then filled the bottles with change, checks, or paper

money, and returned them to their church. Over $28,000 was raised. The knights then petitioned the organization’s supreme council for $12,000. The petition was approved, and an ultrasound machine will be purchased for the center to provide for the health of mothers and their unborn children. “Our goal was to raise $20,000,” said Bob Marlowe, a member of the Knights of Columbus in Kennebunk. “This is overwhelming. The supreme council helped us to the finish line with money from the Culture of Life Fund that all knights contribute to with dues each year.”

A new report, released at the hearing, found that the individuals are providing roughly $14 billion a year in voluntary, uncompensated care, and that these spouses, parents, friends and other loved ones transform their lives to provide daily, essential care for those who have protected and served our nation. Health & Fitness December is a Leading Month for Home Fires NATIONWIDE Festive meals, flickering lights and holiday decorations are all hallmarks of the holiday season. However, Christmas trees, candles, electrical decorations, and cooking all contribute to an increased number of home fires during December, making it one of the leading months for U.S. home fires. To help everyone enjoy a fire-safe holiday season, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is encouraging everyone to be aware of potential fire risks, and to take steps to minimize them. “Fire can quickly turn this festive time of year into a tragic one,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of NFPA’s Outreach and Advocacy division. “Fortunately, when decorating your home and entertaining guests, following some simple safety precautions can go a long way toward enjoying a fire-safe holiday season.” Following are NFPA’s holiday-related fire statistics: Christmas tree fires are not common, but when they do occur, they’re much more likely to be deadly than most other fires. One of every 45 reported home Christmas tree fires results in a death, compared to an annual average of one death per 139 reported home fires. December is the peak time of year for home candle fires. In 2016, the top three days for candle fires were Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and New Year’s Eve. More than half (56%) of the December home decoration fires were started by candles, compared to onethird (31%) the remainder of

the year. Holiday decorations: Between 2012 and 2016, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 800 home fires per year that began with decorations (excluding Christmas trees). These fires caused an annual average of two civilian deaths, 34 civilian injuries and $11 million in direct property damage. Onefifth (19%) of these home decoration fires occurred in December. One-fifth (21%) of decoration fires started in the kitchen; 15% started in the living room, family room or den. While cooking fires are the leading cause of U.S. home fires and injuries year-round, Christmas Day ranked as the second-leading day for home cooking fires in 2016 (behind Thanksgiving Day.) On Christmas Day in 2016, there was a 73% increase in the number of home cooking fires as com-

...COLLINS from page 16 Appropriations Committee, announced that the Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill that was signed into law in September provides $181 million for the National Family Caregiver Support Program. The funding includes a $300,000 investment for the creation of a Family Caregiving Council to implement the RAISE Family Caregivers Act, a new law Senator Collins authored that will establish a coordinated strategy to support family caregivers. In addition, following Senator Collins’ advocacy, the FY 2019 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs (MilCon-VA) Appropriations bill that was

signed into law in September includes $865 million – an increase of $369 million over the amount requested in the administration’s budget – for the VA Caregiver Program. This program, which supported caregivers of post-9/11 veterans, will be expanded in the coming years to include pre-9/11 veterans and their caregivers with the enactment of the VA Mission Act, which was championed by Senator Collins. we made room for these dear seven year-old siblings. Once they settled in, both kitties went from grieving and withdrawn, to relaxed and happy. Their friendly personalities resurfaced and they were adopted by a wonderful family. Sadly, it turned out family members were allergic to cats. They tried everything to make it work because they fell totally in love with Missy and Big Boy, but they had no choice. After several weeks the family had to return them. Missy and Big Boy are now back at Safe Haven. Because they’ve twice endured emotional loss, we’re determined to find them a home in time for the holidays! These healthy, friendly short-haired kitties are sweet and sociable. Please tell your family, friends and co-workers about these kitties and help us find them a great home. Thanks! FMI 207-646-1611. Our shelter has many other wonderful kitties waiting for a great home and new start in life. Each has quite a story, and each deserves their own happily-everafter. Please consider being a part of it. It was wonderful to see everyone, and we appreciate all our volunteers and supporters who made this a success! Our thrift shop is still unwrapping treasures for the home and Christmas decorating. training and companionship. Puppies are housed directly with their student handlers, with pet daily care, socialization, crate training and house training becoming important responsibilities. AWS canine trainers offer weekly classes on basic obedience, showing the student dog handlers positive reinforcement techniques to teach good behavior, basic commands and tricks. “Our long-running Paws in Stripes program, run in conjunction with the Maine Correctional Center, has graduated hundreds of puppies over the years. We hear time after time from adopters how well trained and well socialized the puppies are,” explains Karen Robinson, Animal Care Coordinator, who oversees both programs. “When the opportunity arose to partner with Long Creek, we didn’t hesitate; it’s a great way to teach empathy and compassion to students while also preparing the puppies for life with their new families.” In addition to the training component of the program, AWS’ Humane Educator teaches workshops that reinforce important life skills. Topics include empathy to animals of all kinds, careers in animal welfare, and animal advocacy. She leads lively discussions on topics such as breed-based discrimination, animal cruelty, proper pet care and more. By offering humane education in addition to dog training, this program provides ongoing reinforcement of social, career and life skills in a positive environment. When the puppies graduate from the program, they return to AWS for adoption. Each adopter is presented with a journal, kept by their student handlers, which outlines the six weeks the puppy spend at Long Creek. “It’s a winwin for all,” Robinson points out. “The puppies receive great training and the students learn important life skills.” To learn more about the recent puppy graduates,, visit www.animalwelfaresociety.org.

Community Colleges Launch New Training Initiatives STATEWIDE A $3.6 million grant from the Harold Alfond Foundation to The Foundation for Maine’s Community Colleges (FMCC) will enable Maine’s seven community colleges to expand and strengthen shortterm training for both incumbent workers and those seeking to enter the workforce. The Alfond Foundation’s gift, together with a $420,000 grant from KeyBank to The Foundation for Maine’s Community Col-

leges in May 2018, will support new short-term training initiatives in four key Maine industries: health care, information technology, construction, manufacturing and the trades. “Our community colleges are key to addressing Maine’s workforce challenges,” said Greg Powell, Chair of the Harold Alfond Foundation, in announcing its latest grant to FMCC. “They are leading the way, opening the door to opportunity for more Maine people through innovative edu-

Tax-Advantaged Investing Investing has always been a means for people to grow their wealth and make their money work for them. Investors know that protecting investment earnings is important, and that often can be achieved through tax-advantaged investments. Tax-advantaged investing, also called tax-efficient investing, allows investors to maximize the profits they can keep after taxes are filed. Investment selection and asset allocation are important factors affecting returns, but minimizing taxes and other costs is also crucial, according to the Schwab Center for Financial Research. There are some ways for investors to keep more of their assets. A qualified financial advisor can help navigate the waters of the best tax-advantaged options. When investing on an annual basis, there are some general accounts people can use to their advantages. A 401(k) or 403(b): These accounts are an ideal way to get “free” money. Funds in these accounts are put away pre-tax. Because your adjusted gross income is lowered, so is your federally taxable income. In addition, some employers may match contributions up to a certain percentage. Companies also may offer Roth 401(k) plans, which differ from traditional plans in regard to when you pay taxes. With Roth plans, you pay taxes up front. When the money is eventually withdrawn, those withdrawals are tax-free. IRAs: Individual retirement accounts are similar to 401(k) plans in that they’re taxdeferred. However, they generally offer greater freedom in investment choices. Roth IRAs, like the Roth 401(k) plans, must be paid with after-tax

dollars. But the advantages are higher contribution amounts, withdrawals that are tax-free and no mandatory withdrawals when a person reaches a certain age. Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA): Canadian investors can explore TFSAs. These are accounts that do not tax any contributions, interest earned, dividends, or capital gains, and can be withdrawn tax-free. It is available to individuals ages 18 and older in Canada and can be used for any purpose. College savings accounts: Investing in a 529 plan can be wise for parents. While money is invested after tax, it is tax-free when withdrawn for qualified higher education purposes. Health savings accounts: To get a tax deduction on health expenses, an HSA is the way to go. HSAs are linked to high-deductible health plans and allow account holders to use the funds for qualified spending. Working with a financial planner can help investors maximize their investments to be as tax-efficient as possible. cation and training that meet both the immediate and longterm needs of students and the state. We are pleased to continue to partner with them in this important work.” The funds will also support the development of new educational pathways that lead from short-term training to college credits and credentials. These will include the introduction of industry recognized badges, awarded in recognition of the specific skills gained through short-term

training modules that address workforce needs in key Maine industries. “The Alfond Foundation’s gift recognizes the critical role our community colleges play as engines of economic growth and upward mobility,” said John McKernan, former Maine Governor and Chair of The Foundation for Maine’s Community Colleges. “This grant provides critical fuel for the engine and will allow the colleges to speed delivery of new training programs and partner-

ships at a time when they are so badly needed across the state.” The Alfond gift brings to nearly $39 million the amount raised by The Foundation for Maine’s Community Colleges since it was established in 2009. The Harold Alfond Foundation has been a major contributor to the Foundation. Its gift of $10.85 million in 2012 funded the establishment of Kennebec Valley Community College’s Harold Alfond Campus in Hinckley.

What it Costs to Raise Kids Today A generation ago, it was common to see families with four or more children. But things are a bit different today. Pew Social Trends indicates that parents now have 2.4 children on average, a number that has remained fairly stable for two decades. In addition, since 1976, the share of mothers at the end of their childbearing years who have one child has doubled, from 11 percent to 22 percent. While shrinking families may be based on many different factors, including postponing having children until later in life, the rising costs of raising kids may have something to do with it as well. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the cost of raising a child today has climbed to

$233,610, which excludes the expenses of college. A 2011 article that appeared in the Canadian publication MoneySense estimated childrearing costs to be $12,824 per year, which adds up to $243,656 by the time a child reaches age 18. It’s also well documented that more adult children are living with their parents for longer than kids used to stay with mom and dad. Pew Research has found that roughly one-third of women and half of men between the ages of 18 and 34 are still living at home, surpassing records set in the 1940s. This means expenditures on child-rearing may continue long after kids reach adulthood. As a result, it is easy to see how having multiple children can be a major source of financial stress for the average middle-income

family. The financial planning resource NerdWallet estimates that the cost of raising a child today is higher than the DOA figures, coming in at roughly $260,000 – and that is just for the basic essentials. Throw in tiered levels of care, including everything from more expensive choices for food and clothing, and extras for early childhood care, sports lessons, music instruction, and electronics/gaming, and the cost can get as high as $745,634. Many different factors impact the size of modern families today, and the rising cost of raising children may be the most influential of such factors. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.

Morris Joins Williams Realty Partners YORK It is with great excitement that Williams Realty Partners (WRP) announces that Realtor Jane Morris has joined the WRP team. “Jane is one of the more ‘seasoned’ professionals on our team, having been in the real estate business for 16 years. She is a highly respected and successful broker in the Seacoast area and is always willing to help other colleagues and new agents with her insight and experiences. Her clients always comment on her common sense, knowledge and kindness — to say nothing of her humor at times!,” states Troy Williams, Owner of WRP. Jane Morris has been in the real estate industry for nearly two decades and is well known and respected throughout South Maine. Prior to her real estate career, Jane was a Vice President of Marketing for Europe and The Americas at Arthur D. Little in Cambridge, MA and Amsterdam, Netherlands. “I greatly value the relationships with my clients and I am positive this transition will benefit my existing and future clients. Ultimately, this decision was made with them in mind, as I am always look-

ing for ways to broaden my ability to provide them with unmatched service. They will get the same personal and responsive service from me, with the addition of a proven support staff working alongside us. This full-service, specialized approach, in addition to an innovative marketing strategy, has helped Williams Realty Partners to become the #1 team in New England,” exclaims Jane Morris. ~ Obituaries ~ Miltiades C. Vargelis, 74

Roger Arthur Noel, 89 SCARBOROUGH – Roger Noel passed away on November 29, 2018, at the Gosnell House in Scarborough. He will be missed by many friends and relatives, including his immediate family, daughters Cheryl Noel Ernst of Kennebunk, and Colleen Hill of Ctr. Conway, NH, their husbands David Ernst, and Chad Hill. His grandchildren are Marie, John, Christine, and Michael Jarowicz of Kennebunk, and Katherine and Helen Hill of Ctr. Conway. He is also survived by his sister, Rita McGlincy of Brentwood, TN, nephew Lloyd “Mac” McGlincy of IN, Donna McGlincy Jorde of CA, Susan McGlincy Caldwell of TN, and Peggy Cassanos of Kennebunk, and his former son-in-law, Richard Jarowicz of Kennebunk and NY. Roger was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Lydia Noel, and his sister, Doris Cassanos, and brother-in-law Lloyd Mc-

Glincy (then of CA). He deeply missed his wife of over 56 years, Rita Ross Noel, who passed away in 2009. They both grew up in Sanford, Maine, where they started dating in high school. Both Roger and Rita had very strong work ethics. When still in grammar school, Roger delivered milk for his grandfather’s dairy (Sanford Dairy). After graduating, Roger enlisted in the service. He was a very proud Marine, and served four years in the Korean War, stationed most of that time in Japan. In Oct. 1952, he and Rita were married. It was then that he attended Nasson College in Springvale, earning his bachelor’s degree. He then began a life-long career of salesmanship starting at the Van Sickle Insurance Agency in Bound Brook, NJ. In 1962, they moved back to Maine and lived in Wells for the next 50 years. Roger enjoyed being a salesman for Fuller-Brush, and then Electrolux for many years. During those years going door-to-door selling and repair-

OGUNQUIT / WELLS – When asked “what do you want in your obituary?” Milt said “Why waste the money. Just tell one person in Ogunquit, and everyone will know!” Milt wasn’t “big” on talking about death and dying. A private man when it came to his personal life, he asked that no one know about his valiant pursuit to stay alive. True to his unique character, Milt procrastinated for as long as he possibly could before leaving us. Sometime in the morning on November 28, 2018, Milt quiing vacuum cleaners, he started buying antiques from those houses. Rita had expressed a desire to have her own business, and this is how he started their shop, Noel’s Antiques, which they ran by themselves and very successfully from the mid-1970s until about five years ago when he sold everything in Wells and moved to Aroostook County. Roger lived his last years very contentedly in the quiet, friendly town of Sherman. He boasted how much he loved living there with so many good friends, especially the ones he made and talked with every day at Brenda’s Restaurant. A funeral mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 15 at Holy Family Catholic Church of Sanford. Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Service – Sanford, Springvale. To leave a message of condolence, visit www.blackfuneralhomes.com.

etly passed away with his devoted friend Angel at his side. We were in my home in Wells, where we celebrated every Holiday together and where Alana and Christian Kelley grew up. The two children (daughter and son) he proudly raised as his own. This is where we all learned the true meaning of family. Milt loved to travel when he could be pulled away from his true passion, “work”. A long time resident of Ogunquit, Milt made his mark as the owner of Charlie’s Restaurant and The Neptune Inn at Ogunquit Beach. Those who truly knew him will remember his generosity, dedication to his patrons, faithful employees and friends, and his trust in his son in law Marko, not only to take his first “time off” ever from work, but to guide his granddaughter who will arrive in January, on earth, as he guides us all from above. Oh, and… The Best French Fries anywhere! He is predeceased by his mother and father Dionesia and Constantine Vargelis and survived by his brother Jim, sister Niki and their children. ...WANTED from page 15 “It’s been wonderful,” said Rita, who wrote the show in 1993 and continues as its producer. “Just doing it for love, I think that’s what makes the play special to begin with, putting in all the work and really making something beautiful for God.” Though “To God be the Glory” was written by Rita, the script is pulled heavily from Scripture, chronicling the life of Jesus from the Annunciation to the Resurrection. It begins with children singing and signing “We Believe,” and continues with the appearance of the Arch-

Leeward Charitable Foundation Donates $60K YORK The holidays are a particularly difficult time for area food pantries to meet surging demands. This Thanksgiving season serves as a reminder of our responsibility to give back, especially to those who do not have enough food to eat. A recent study by feedingamerica. org suggests that nearly 25,000 people suffer from food insecurity in York County Maine alone. With this in mind, The Leeward Charitable Foundation has once again helped to address the critical needs of the community by donating $60,000 to York County Food Pantries. This donation will provide over 50,000 meals for our neighbors in need. Leeward Vice President Shauna Werner and other Team Members spent several days last week delivering donation checks to area food pantries. Upon re-

ceiving a $5,000 donation check, Karen Brown, Executive Director of FootPrints Food Pantry said while holding back tears, “Wow! This money will really help our growing client base this year”. “We are so grateful to receive this donation from Leeward,” explains Michelle Surdoval, Executive Director at YCSA Food Pantry in York. “This money will help us to feed approximately eighty families a week”. The Leeward Charitable Foundation operates thrift stores in Maine and Massachusetts. Donated goods from community residents and businesses are processed and sold through the thrift stores. Throughout the year, the organization donates proceeds from its thrift store operations to local food pantries and home heating assistance programs including; Fuel

and More (Kittery), FoodPrints Food Pantry (Kittery), North Berwick Food Pantry, Saco Food Pantry, Sanford Food Pantry, Stone Soup Food Pantry (Biddeford), Table of Plenty Food Kitchen (Berwick), York Community Service Association Food Pantry, York County Community Action Corp., and other deserving charities. If you would like to help, you can either donate by dropping off gently used clothing, household items and furniture at the Leeward Landing Thrift Store, 90 US Route 1 York, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays or call 207-361-4085 to arrange a furniture pick up. You may also volunteer. You will meet new friends and be part of the Leeward team directly impacting the lives of family, friends and neighbors and making a real difference in your community.

Stonewall Kitchen Opens Cooking School in California YORK Award-winning specialty food producer Stonewall Kitchen announced the opening of its first retail locations on the West Coast, with a new Stonewall Kitchen Cooking School and Café in the Macy’s South Coast Plaza location in Costa Mesa, CA. The Café will feature the same classic New England fare made famous at Stonewall Kitchen’s flagship York location. The Cooking School will offer a variety of demonstration classes for lunch and dinner with chef instructors also similar to those taught at the York location. “We’re incredibly excited to expand our partnership with

Macy’s with the launch of our new Cooking School and Café in California,” said John Stiker, Stonewall Kitchen’s Chief Executive Officer. “The launch of our new Cooking School and Café inside their Costa Mesa location represents a logical and exciting evolution of our relationship, as we both look to create interesting and interactive retail experiences for our guests that can’t be found anywhere else.” “We’re thrilled about the addition of a Stonewall Kitchen Cooking School and Café at our Costa Mesa location,” said Sue Graham-Sparks, the Vice President and Store Manager of Macy’s at South Coast Plaza. “We’ve worked closely with

Scalawags Named Winner of Window-Decorating Contest

KENNEBUNKPORT Scalawags This & That for Dogs & Cats has been named the first-ever Window WOW winner of the KKA Chamber of Commerce’s and the Kennebunkport Business Association’s window decorating contest. Part of Prelude, the contest garnered 123 online votes for folks’ favorite festively decorated storefront windows. “Scalawags’ window practically illustrates the song lyrics from “Walking in a Winter Wonderland! Specifically, “in the meadow we can build a snowman...”. Whimsy and wonder combine in a truly unique and beautiful representation of the winter season and simple joys,” wrote auntidi_ann. “Scalawags window has the most originality! It repre-

Batson River Tasting Room Opens in Kennebunkport KENNEBUNKPORT Batson River Brewing & Distilling’s new Tasting Room, located at 12 Western Ave in Kennebunkport, opened on November 28. The Tasting Room provided an early selection of beer, including an IPA, Stout and Pale Ale, from the Batson River Brewery and a shareable menu of food from the kitchen. Spirts will be launched throughout December and January. Tasting Room hours are Thursday and Friday 4 p.m. to close and Saturday and Sunday from noon to close. Happy Hour will be daily from 4 to 6 p.m. and will feature half-off food and drink specials. Enjoy thoughtfully-crafted cocktails using Batson River Distilling’s spirits; from redesigned classics to new-seasonal drinks. Upstairs one can enjoy one of the many hand-brewed beers and spend time with friends playing shuffleboard.

Since 2014, they have grown their own hops and botanicals on a centuries-old farm in Kennebunkport and the distillery lies just up the road, while the Tasting Room is set on a hilltop in historic Kennebunk. Everything they craft pays tribute to the local, one-of-a-kind community they call home but they are also dedicated to giving back — with 4% of their profits benefiting animal shelters here in Maine. The Batson River Brewing & Distilling team is led by Head Distiller Matt Dyer, former Bar Manager at Earth at Hidden Pond, Head Brewer Wade Ritchey, formerly of Temescal Brewing Co. in Oakland, CA, and Tasting Room Manager Molly Nevens, who comes from Liquid Riot in Portland. Tim Harrington of the Kennebunk Resort Collection and Atlantic Holdings, LLC., Kevin Lord, Operations Director, of Lord and

sents what Kennebunkport is — a fun, whimsical and endearing place to come to, not only in the winter but all year ‘round!” said voter jebrigham. “Seems to me that a bunch of shops stepped up their window treatments this year in response to your contest. But my vote has to go to Scalawags Pet Boutique, 3 Dock Square. I think they outdid themselves in theme and overall creativity!” said dmurray19. Also garnering a percentage of the votes were Mail-It Unlimited in Shoppers Village, Kennebunk, and Daytrip Society in Dock Square, Kennebunkport. “Mail-It Unlimited is ‘Simply the Best’ in all of the Kennebunks. Anna Gallant has been treating her customers to the best retail holiday decoration windows for years!!! All her gifts are displayed with so much thought and they naturally appeal to Mail-it-Unlimited customers old and new. The gift selection here is second to none, always a fun time.,” said hatterasme42. “Daytrip Society puts so much effort into their window execution and it always works out beautifully. The items they put in their windows always compliment each other and they’re not afraid to take things to a whole other level like incorporating big props you wouldn’t think would work in a window display but they nail it. Their windows seem to tell a story or give you a certain vibe that peaks your interest whenever walking by and you can’t help but stop in every time you pass by,” said alexismhoward. For information, visit GoKennebunks.com. Thomas, and Matt Dyer, Head Distiller, of Batson River Brewing and Distillery are the founding partners. To learn more, visit www.batsonriver.com.

Gifts of Christmas Past By Jim Fabiano The leaves are off the trees, the raking is finished and the countdown to Christmas has begun. Shopping catalogues the size of telephone books arrive daily in the mail and fill up our inbox to the point one doesn’t know what is real and what is spam. Weight gain is also one of our greatest fears. Yes, the Christmas season is finally upon us with all its beauty and wonder. For me this time of year also begins the countdown to the inevitability of old age. Each year my wife tries and fails to find the perfect wardrobe that will make me look thinner and younger. Each year my wife tries to buy me the gift that will finally induct me into the ranks of the stylish. For me, this is saying a lot because the last time I attempted to join the fashion world was when I started buying flannel shirts. In order to discourage her from her quest, I always remind her of a particular gift of Christmas past. It was a time when the classic trend-setting style was the belt-less and fly-less elastic-band pants. This fashion promised to be the wave of the future because it shortened the time it took to put on one’s pants. At first, I enjoyed these pants because I always felt comfortable no matter how much I ate or drank. In fact, because of this, I decided to wear the pants to a Boston Celtics basketball game one January night. The old Boston Garden was a fabulous stadium to watch a basketball or hockey game. First, because there is always a great chance of seeing a victory,

(until the final few seasons), and second, the beer vendors were always close to all the ramps. Nobody worried about how much beer they drank at The Garden until halftime. Then everybody in the stadium realized that it was time to lose some of that newly added weight. Remember one only rents beer, they never really buy it. My experience in the men’s room that night was more interesting and bizarre than any Fellini film could ever be. First, the encounters in the lines were a psychologist’s dream. Nobody dared look at the person nearby. If your eyes met it would immediately designate you as “strange”. No matter how much I had to go, I was damned if I would ever look at the guy in front or behind me to check my position in line. Of course, no one would ever look to their right or left either. It simply was not done. I was doing a great job until it was my turn to position myself in front of that most sought after destination. With great pride I reached for the front of my pants and was momentarily mystified by what wasn’t there. My beloved wife’s present to me from the past Christmas; the zipper-less pants. I had encountered the ultimate dilemma. Sweat beaded on my brow. Even today, I try not to remember how my insides felt at that moment. After a couple of seconds of panic I realized I had three choices. First, I could pull my pants down to my knees and do what I had to do. But, I figured that if I did that, I was destined to become a headline for the, “National Inquirer” or even worse, “The Boston Herald.” Second, I could have mumbled something about not having to go. But, if I did that, I would be considered a total maniac. Who in their right mind would want to join hoards of men to the men’s room at The Old Garden at halftime for no apparent

Educate Maine’s Annual Report Identifies Progress and Problems PORTLAND Educate Maine, a business-led education advocacy organization, released its sixth annual “Education Indicators for Maine” report Wednesday. The report is an in-depth examination of Maine’s entire education system beginning in early childhood and continuing through postsecondary education. It details where Maine students stand within ten education indicators, compares that to where they stood in the report’s first year (2013), and identifies goals for each indicator going forward. This year’s report finds progress in key areas, such as the number of Maine people achieving a post-secondary credential of value, a workforce development priority for Educate Maine which is a partner in MaineSpark|60% by 2025. A top concern identified in the report is the on-going achievement gap for Maine’s economically disadvantaged students. Lower income students are less likely to participate in early childhood education programs, less likely to be proficient

in reading and math, less likely to graduate from high school, and less likely to successfully pursue a postsecondary education or career. Educate Maine recommends targeting greater funding to school districts with high percentages of students who are disadvantaged and more likely to fall behind. “The achievement gap is a real problem and continues to grow the divide between students in communities with resources and those in communities without,” said Educate Maine Executive Director Ed Cervone. “We have a responsibility to create opportunities for all students to succeed, and we need to close those gaps by directing investment and support to those communities with the greatest need.” The ten indicators measured in “Education Indicators” follow the path of Maine children beginning in early childhood educational programs, continuing from first grade through high school and postsecondary education. reason. Being called stupid was just a step below being called strange. So I decided to exercise my third and final option. Fake it. To my surprise I was really good at it. I gave that all-too-familiar relieved look as I stared into the dirty wall in front of me. I even swayed my hips back and forth to prove to all that no tell tale stain would threaten the front of my now hated pants. I was successful in my charade. I turned around, not daring to look at anybody around me, left the bathroom and returned to my seat. At this time I thought it best not to pick up my second half beer that I always brought back with me after my excursion

to the rest room. My bladder would not stand for that. I then waited until well into the middle of the third quarter to return to the men’s room, where I found an empty stall just in the nick of time. My wife was asleep when I arrived home. I quickly got undressed and went to bed. About five minutes later my wife was awakened by an odd smell emanating from our fireplace. She was at first alarmed by the smell. I comforted her by explaining that is was only one of those gifts from Christmas past. Jim Fabiano is a retired teacher and writer living in York. You can contact Jim at james.fabiano60@gmail.com.

SPORTS Allaire Selected as Student-Athlete of the Month WELLS Wells High School junior Griffin Allaire has been named Student-Athlete of the Month for October of 2018. This award is in recognition of his academics and sportsmanship on the Warriors boys cross country team. “I was surprised, nice to get,” said Allalire of the award. “Certainly an honor,” Allaire also participates on WHS’s outdoor track and field team. Presenting him with a Student-Athlete of the Month plaque on November 15 was Wells-Ogunquit CSD Director of Athletics 6-12 Pierce Cole, Pam Moody-Maxon, and John C. Kreie. Also present was Coach Robert Winn, Allaire’s running coach. “I think he is going to be the best that has ever come (through WHS), said Coach Winn. “He’s got another year to prove it…” The coach added, “He is going to have a lot of records before he leaves. He is talented.” Allaire’s running in the fall of 2018 reflected Winn’s

opinion. In October, Allaire finished third in the 5K (3.1 miles) event at the state meet in Belfast. “(There were) a lot of good runners there who I have been competing with for a while,” said Allaire. In November, at the New England Interscholastic X-C Championship meet, he ranked 6th among the runners there representing Maine. Winn said that the trail was “really muddy and nasty” at the New England’s this year. He pointed out that cross country is “off road” and that trail

and weather conditions can vary. “That’s the nature of cross country,” he said. “Griffin has been a great asset to the Warrior Cross Country Team for a couple of years…,” commented John Kreie of the Cole Harrison Insurance Agency. “He comes from a very athletic family who all enjoy distance running. So it’s certainly in his blood and he’s a super good kid! I’m happy for him and his family,” When asked how he gets psyched up to run long distances, Allaire added that he has

Bowl Games and New Year’s Day New Year’s Day is rife with tradition. Perhaps no such tradition is more exciting for fans of college football than the handful of New Year’s Day bowl games featuring some of the sport’s best teams. New Year’s Day bowl games can trace their origins back to the 19th century. According to History.com, on January 1, 1890, members of the Valley Hunt Club in Southern California paraded through the streets of Pasadena,

California, engaging in various contests, including tug-of-war. While no collegians competed on the gridiron that day, the parade served as a precursor to the Tournament of Roses Parade, which immediately proceeded athletic contests that included polo matches and greased-pig catching. In 1901, the president of the parade, seeking to gain publicity for the town of Pasadena and its floral festival, sought to stage a

sporting event that might attract more interest than pig-catching and polo. Festival organizers ultimately chose college football, deciding to initiate a matchup between a team representing the western United States and the eastern United States. On January 1, 1902, the football teams from the University of Michigan and Stanford University battled in the inaugural East-West football game. Michigan, which had not allowed a point all season long, steamrolled its way to a 49-0

victory. In fact, the game’s lack of competitiveness temporarily nixed plans for an annual New Year’s Day game, which was not played again until 1916, when Washington State University defeated Brown University 14-0. Interest in the game continued to grow from there on out, and in 1923, the game was moved to a large stadium known as the Rose Bowl. The game itself soon adopted the name of that stadium, See GAMES page 36...

~ Sports ~ The Origins of Popular Winter Sports Many people spend winter huddled indoors. For winter sports enthusiasts, however, the arrival of snow and chilly temperatures means the start of a season of outdoor fun. Those who see winter as a time to embrace their love of sport may appreciate learning more about some of the sports that are most popular during the colder months of the year. Ice hockey Hockey is one of the most popular winter sports. In 1994, Parliament passed the Canada’s National Sport Act, which declared hockey the official national winter sport of Canada. The origins of ice hockey are somewhat uncertain, though some historians claim the first set of rules to govern the sport were written by students at Montreal’s

McGill University in the 1870s. Downhill (Alpine) skiing SnowSports Industries America indicates that, in the 2014-2015 season, more than nine million American Alpine skiers took to the slopes, and the sport continues to attract new devotees each year. Historians state that skiing evolved as a method to cross the landscape in the winter when marshlands froze over. Cave drawings suggest that man used skis during the last Ice Age in the Palaeolithic period. Yet the birth of modern downhill skiing is often traced to the 1850s when Norwegian legend Sondre Norheim popularized skis with curved sides and made skiing a sport instead of just a mode of transport. Skiing ultimately became quite popular in Russia,

Finland, Sweden, and Norway. Today there are various types of downhill skiing, including mountain skiing, extreme cat skiing and heli skiing. Curling Curling may now be seen as a largely Canadian sport, but it is widely believed to be one of the world’s oldest team sports, tracing its origins to Great Britain. The World Curling Federation states paintings by the 16th Century Flemish artist Pieter Bruegel portrayed an activity similar to curling being played on Scotland’s frozen ponds. The earliest known curling stones came from the Scottish regions of Stirling and Perth, dating all the way back to 1511. Ice skating Speed skating and figure skating are derivatives of early

ice skating, which is believed to have started in Finland more than 3,000 years ago. Skates were sharpened, flattened bone strapped to the bottom of a shoe and glided on top of the ice. The Dutch added edges to steel blades around the 13th or 14th centuries. Eventually, skating was brought to England from the

Netherlands. Winter sports draw millions of participants each year, giving people a reason to leave the house even when temperatures dip below freezing. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.
