York Boys’ Hockey Continues Community Tradition YORK York High School Boys’

Hockey Team is known for its volunteerism and community

service. In keeping with tradition, the team held their annual

collection for Toys for Tots. The boys have been participating in the Toys for Tots campaign for approximately 18 years. For a few weeks before the fill-a-fire truck event, hockey players placed drop boxes in local businesses around town, as well at York High School and York Middle School. The team was able to collect donations such as toys, books, stuffed animals and games. The team held their Toys for Tots game against Cape Elizabeth on Friday, December 10. York Wildcats asked fans to bring a new unwrapped toy to the game. The team also asked

families who were able to support the cause. Families did so, adding to the already successful collection from the community. On Sunday, December 12, York Boys’ Hockey attended the fill-a-fire truck event at Hannaford in York. The team had initially set a goal of trying to collect 125 toys. This year the team successfully collected over 350 toys for families in the York area! Experiences such as this show high school students the importance of community service and the positive impact they can make, helping others in-need.

Submarine Squadron 2 Established by Navy at PNSY KITTERY The U.S. Navy established Commander, Submarine Squadron (COMSUBRON) 2 in an official ceremony on Friday, December 10, at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery. The move revives a tradition tied to the original Submarine Squadron 2, which was established in New London, Connecticut, in the late 1930s. In 1941, the Navy sent SUBRON 2 to the Pacific, where it operated during World War II.

After the war, in October of 1945, the squadron was back in New London, where it garnered the nickname “The Armada” because of the wide range of submarines under its oversight. The squadron oversaw some of the first and last built in the Los Angeles class fast attack submarines as well as the Navy’s only nuclear powered deep submersible research vessel, NR-1.

STATEWIDE The rise of online marketplaces and expedited delivery services is a convenient service for many consumers across the nation, allowing holiday purchasers to search out the perfect gift for friends and family. Unfortunately, purchasing and having the item delivered to the proper address does not guarantee you will receive it. According to market research firm C+R Research, package theft continues to be an issue for many Americans, with approximately one-quarter (23%) of consumers experiencing package theft in 2021. They will often target houses that provide a quick in-and-out route, especially if the porch or area where packages are delivered is within 25 feet of the street and are easily visible. Over the past five years, internet searches using the keywords “package stolen” nearly doubled during December, demonstrating the impact of this crime on households across the nation. As a crime of opportunity, preventing or discouraging package theft can be accomplished in

several ways, depending on the location of your residence, type and community. For instance, preventing package theft at an apartment complex in the middle

of the city differs from a suburban residential community. However, consumers can use specific strategies to discourage the act no matter where they live. The Better Business Bureau provides the following tips to prevent package thieves from affecting your holiday plans (and the rest of the year): Check with neighbors. Sometimes, your package may not be stolen at all, just simply at the wrong address.
