YORK First Parish Church in York Village invites the community to join them on a “Journey to Bethlehem, rain or shine, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20. Travel in the comfort of your warm car through a candlelit landscape of seven tableaus depicting the Christmas story beginning with the Angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary that she would bring forth a son to Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem while shepherds and angels kept watch. According to Janet Cassidy, who along with husband Larry, brought the idea of a drivethrough nativity to First Parish

and have served as chairs for 6 years, “It’s a story of love, hope, joy and peace. It has become a tradition not only for those who visit, but also for the more than 130 volunteers who have made and distributed costumes and props, built and assembled sets, strung lights, shared their livestock, provided pots of soup, lit luminaries and offered storage space. Not surprisingly, all would agree that their gift to the community is also a gift to themselves. “It puts the meaning back into Christmas. No entrance fee or donations are requested. For more information, call 207-363-3758 or visit www.firstparishyork.net.

Navy Veteran Speaks About Pearl Harbor Experience WELLS World War II survivor RMC USN (Ret.) Robert Coles of Machias (center) visited Wells Junior High School on December 8 and spoke to students about his experiences in the Navy – especially those memories from the morning of December 7, 1941 when then 17 year-old Coles witnessed Imperial Japan’s sneak attack on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Accompanying Coles to WJHS was fellow veteran and friend Dennis Boyd MM1 Navy

Before coming to Wells, Coles was at Cheverus High School for an observance of the 73rd anniversary of the assault on Pearl Harbor and for a sendoff for the Wreaths Across America convoy bound for Arlington National Cemetery. OGUNQUIT – The Rotary Club of Ogunquit is raising funds that will enable four rural schools in Atlåntico, Colombia to provide breakfast and lunch to over 300 elementary schoolchildren. The provision of meals is expected to improve both school attendance and the nutritional welfare of the children. The Ogunquit club, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Barranquilla, Colombia, will purchase mobile kitchens in which meals will be prepared by the parents of the children. US Peace Corp volunteers will assist by training residents in proper food preparation. To date, the Ogunquit Rotary club has raised 70 percent of the $37,000 required to fund the project. comes to global health, we can no longer afford to be silent. In that spirit, I launched Health eVillages in 2010 with a coalition of business and nonprofit supporters because we believed that a collaborative approach and modern technology could quickly address what fate had not yet done. “The results have been astonishing. For example, through our partnership in Kenya, infant mortality in the surrounding area has been reduced from 100 deaths per 1000 births to less than 35. Just think – for every 1000 births, 70 more babies are alive today because of our partnership with the Lwala Community Health Alliance. Tramuto is also the founder, CEO and Chairman of a mobile health technology firm based in Reading, Massachusetts Physicians Interactive. Under Donato’s leadership, Physicians Interactive has grown to be a leading global provider of online and mobile clinical resources for healthcare professionals and has registered more than 2 million healthcare professionals worldwide in its user network, an industry-leading milestone. It was an educational experience filled with stories, songs, games and celebration. At the end, gold coins were given out to all, a traditional gift given during days of Hanukah.

Imaginative Worship To Benefit YCSA YORK In 1918, the newly appointed Dean of King’s College in Cambridge, England, decided the Church needed more imaginative ideas for holiday worship. What he proposed has become a tradition of Christmas carols, hymns, choir music and bible readings, telling the story of the promise of the Messiah and birth of Jesus. The tradition will continue again this year as Trinity Church in York, plays host to a 40-member choir composed from four different York churches, plus individuals from all over town representing the town’s schools, first responders, medical professionals, artists, and clergy acting as lay readers. Music for the evening will be directed and conducted by Terry Harmon, Organist from Trinity Church; Wendell Purrington, Organist and Choir Director of First Parish Church; and Ivan Stefanov, Minister of Music at St. George’s Church Trinity Church will welcome all on Sunday, Dec. 21 at 4 p.m. Proceeds collected will be donated to the York Community Services Association.

“Historic Preservation Then & Now Installed at Sarah Orne Jewett House Visitor Center SOUTH BERWICK – This fall and winter will be a busy time at the Sarah Orne Jewett House Museum and Visitor Center in South Berwick. Along with a full slate of programs, the museum is piloting winter hours with tours offered from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on first and third Saturdays, November through May. Museum admission is free for town residents and Historic New England members, and $5 for non-members. A new exhibition in the visitor center is on view for free during museum open hours. In ‘The Preservation Movement Then and Now’, discover the history of the preservation movement in New England. This engaging panel exhibition, developed by Historic New England, highlights the unsuccessful effort to save Boston’s Hancock House in 1863, which was the early catalyst for preservation in the region. Wash only full loads in the dishwasher - and use the shortest cycle that will get your dishes clean. If operating instructions allow, turn off the dishwasher before the drying cycle, open the door and let the dishes air dry. 3. Set your refrigerator between 36-40 degrees Fahrenheit. The freezer can be set between 0-5 degrees. Check that the energy saver switch is in the ‘on’ position. Defrost your refrigerators and freezers before ice buildup becomes 1/4-inch thick and causes the appliance to work harder to keep cold. 4. Keep your stovetop clean and shiny. Believe it or not, when burner pans become blackened from heavy use, they can absorb a lot of heat, reducing burner efficiency. You want them to remain shiny so they reflect heat up to the cookware. 5. Limit your light usage. Plug your indoor and outdoor lighting displays into a timer set to run during the earlier evening hours. If you don't use timers, unplug your lights when you go to sleep or leave home. 6. Try LED lights for your holiday display. Old, incandescent holiday lights are very inefficient. This year, save money by replacing them with ENERGY STARŽ qualified LED light strands. YCCC Announces New Winter Session WELLS – York County Community College (YCCC) will offer a 2-week Winter Session which will begin January 5, 2015, and gives college students the chance to complete a course quickly during their winter break. YCCC students, as well

On December 10, event organizers, The ‘Pink Pals’, officially presented a $150,000 check to York Hospital's Breast Cancer Living Well Fund. Through their generosity, along with hundreds of donors, businesses, attendees, volunteers, many cancer patients at York Hospital will be able to utilize supportive programs and services to soften their breast cancer journey. Over 300 guests attended the sold-out event, emceed by WCVB-TV, Channel 5's Randy Price, along with Susan Wornick and organized

by "Pals" Ellen Baldwin, Cathy Barnhorst, Barbara Conda and Leslie Ware. Celebrities attending included singer-songwriter and TV personality Kara DioGuardi, who donated two cocktail parties, along with PBS “Ciao Italia Chef Mary Ann Esposito, who gave a “Roman Holiday themed dinner. Maine Author Releases “Out of the Woods: A True Story YORK – Maine-based musician Kevin Farley, best known as the Irish Music Guy, recently released his new eBook, “Out of the Woods: A True Story, with Amazon Kindle. The book focuses on Farley’s life-changing experience with Stephen Sondheim’s legendary musical, “Into the Woods, as the approaching release of the Meryl Streep/Johnny Depp Disney adaptation brings the show back into the spotlight. The story focuses on a father (Farley) who takes his six-year-old daughter to see a production of “Into the Woods, thinking in his ignorance it would be appropriate for children because it’s about fairy tales. The only problem is that the child’s mother died when the she was three weeks old. Seeing the show opened the floodgates to almost seven years of unresolved grief for both of them. Next morning, daughter wakes father and begs him to take her to see it again. And the same thing happens the next morning, and the next after that. And so begins a three-week journey into their own dark and scary woods. “Out of the Woods: A True Story is about the power of music, theatre and storytelling to open doors and cast light into

dark corners. And the power of trust and friendship, as cast members of the show embrace their journey and show how true, life-changing catharsis can happen when you least expect it. The book can be downloaded to any computer, tablet or smart phone. For more information, visit www.amazon.com.

Walking in, you can see the tremendous effort and detail put forth by The Pink Pals, not to mention the support from sponsors, attendees‌the entire community. And every one of them realizes it all comes down to a story, like Kara’s and Sherrie’s‌ each of our patients has one. And all together, we’re doing our best to help give each one some great chapters and a happy ending. Sponsors for the event were led by Bangor Savings Bank, Portsmouth Harbor Events, Stonewall Kitchen, Coldwell Banker Yorke Realty, Kittery Trading Post, TJX Companies, Anchorage Inn and Anchorage by the Sea, Victor and Mary Linda Zonana, Tide Run Development, Maine Coast, Anthony's Food Shop, ELC and many more. She lost her entire litter of babies to the bitter cold, nearly starving as a stray and slept on a frozen towel on a hard doorstep, hoping it would open to let her inside. It never did. BUSINESS & FINANCE

Give Back Without Going Broke Nonprofit organizations often depend on financial donations to stay afloat. Donations can be used to fulfill a mission statement, pay staff or raise awareness of events sponsored by the organization. Though financial donations are how many people support causes near and dear to their hearts, such gifts are not affordable for everyone. But prospective donors who can’t reach into their pocketbooks can still support worthy causes by giving back in other ways. The following are a handful of alternatives to financial donations for people who want to give back to their communities. Offer your services. Working professionals

have their own unique skill sets, and organizations are always in need of people who can bring something unique to the table. Offering your services is different from traditional volunteering because volunteering projects typically do not require anything more than a willingness to pitch in on a project or lend a hand at an event. When offering your services, you are offering something more than a typical volunteer. For example, attorneys may be able to provide legal advice pro bono while contractors may be able to design projects instead of just pitching in when it comes time to turn those designs into something tangible. Offer your expertise and you will no doubt find numerous organizations ready to accept your offer.

Donate your belongings. It may not seem like much on the surface, but donating old clothing or appliances can make a big difference to a local charity. Charities may be able to sell your donations to generate money, or they may put them to use serving the less fortunate. Find an organization that accepts such donations and, depending on how substantial your donations are, ask for a receipt so you can earn a tax deduction if you qualify. Coach or teach local youth. Another way to give back to the community is to volunteer to coach or teach your youngest neighbors. If you decide to coach, choose a sport you have experience with, especially if you decide you want to coach older children with more advanced skill sets. Adopt a similar approach if you decide to teach or tutor, choosing a subject, per-

haps one that’s affiliated with your profession, that you feel comfortable with. Create an internship. If you own your own business or work for a company that could use a helping hand, create an internship (or propose the idea to your employer and offer to oversee the program). Internships are often invaluable opportunities for high school and college students, so creating such a position can be a great way to give back to the young people in your community. Raise awareness of a good cause. Many nonprofit organizations sponsor community events in an effort to raise awareness for their causes. Such events may include a 5K, a walk for charity or a local vendor showcase where the entry fees go directly to the or-

ganization sponsoring the event. If you want to give back but can’t afford to make a donation, then participate in such events. Races and charity walks often encourage participants to form teams made up of friends, family members and coworkers, so enlist the help of others and ask them to share their participation via social media so they raise awareness for a good cause. Giving back does not have to break the bank. Charitable men and women who can’t afford to cut a check can give back in other ways that can benefit their favorite charities just as much as financial donations. SANFORD – The New England Patriots’ streak of high-scoring victories in October was good news for fans; it was also good news for the York County Shelter Programs (YCSP) and the families and individuals it supports. As part of SIS Bank’s “Touchdowns for Good campaign, the Bank has announced a donation of $700 to YCSP. Prior to the 2014 season, SIS Bank pledged to donate $50 to a local nonprofit organization for every touchdown pass thrown by the Patriots during the team’s 2014 regular season schedule. Each month features a different nonprofit recipient. “Touchdowns for Good gives us another great reason to cheer for the Patriots. We’re very excited that they had such a high-scoring month and that we were able to assist the York County Shelter, said SIS Bank President and CEO Mark T. Mickeriz. “Everyone deserves a warm, safe place to sleep during the winter months, and we’re honored to partner with such a wonderful organization. After the Patriots threw four touchdown passes in September, SIS Bank donated $200 to Waban Projects. Touchdowns for Good will support the Grahamtastic Connection in November and YMCA’s of Maine in December. A running tally of Touchdowns for Good donations can be found at BankSIS.us/touchdowns-forgood.

Senior Housing Facility Model For KeepME Home

Maine state Rep. Roberta Beavers, D-South Berwick, and House Speaker Mark Eves, D-North Berwick, at the groundbreaking celebration for Young Street Apartments held at the South Berwick Public Library on Wednesday.

How Senior Donors Can Avoid Scams Con artists masquerading as charities can victimize anyone, but seniors are especially vulnerable to such criminals. Men and women who perpetrate charitable fraud often target older men and women, feeling that seniors are more likely to have a significant amount of money in their bank accounts and less likely to report crimes for fear of embarrassment. But even if seniors are prime targets for charitable fraud, they still can take steps to safeguard themselves from scammers looking to exploit their generosity. Never donate over the phone. No reputable charity will insist on a donation over the phone. When a person calls and says they represent a charity, they should be willing to send you information in the mail so you can further explore their organization before making your final decision. If a caller attempts to pressure you into donating over the phone, hang up. Keep a list of organizations you have donated to in the past. Many people who perpetuate charitable fraud reference a past relationship or donation history between their victims and the charity the criminal is claiming to represent. Maintain a list of your donation history,

SOUTH BERWICK House Speaker Mark Eves joined community leaders Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 29 Young Street in South Berwick for a groundbreaking ceremony for new affordable housing for local area seniors. The project, Young Street Affordable Housing For Seniors, is designed to provide assistance to seniors and to help grow local jobs. Speaker Eves, D-North Berwick, has proposed a $65 million bond to create 1,000 units of affordable housing for seniors in every county of the state as part of his KeepME Home plan to help seniors live independently longer.

“The Young Street housing facility for seniors is great for our community and it is an excellent model for communities across the state to follow, said House Speaker Eves. “We will be watch-

including the organizations you have donated to and the amount of those donations. This can help you verify if the person calling, emailing or visiting you is telling the truth. Do not feel obligated to give. Many charities send gifts to their donors as a token of appreciation for their support. Some criminals masquerading as charities will send gifts to potential victims in an attempt to fool them into writing a check. Whether a charity is legitimate or not, seniors should not feel obligated to donate simply because they received a gift. If you receive a gift and want to donate, confirm that the organization that sent you the gift is legitimate and not an imposter organization that is baiting you with a gift. If the gift was accompanied by a donation form, do not fill out that form, choosing instead to make a direct donation via the organization’s website, a site you should find independent of the mailer/gift you received, or mail a check directly to the organization after you independently confirm its address, be it through your own research or by contacting the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org). When a person laughs, his or her pulse and blood pressure increase, and people tend to breathe faster when they laugh. Maine is the oldest state in the nation, with 50 people turning 65 each day. Winter Weather A Trigger For Cold Sores

&ƾůĨĹ?ĹŻĹŻ zŽƾĆŒ dĆŒĆľÄž WŽƚĞŜƚĹ?Ä‚ĹŻ

Although cold weather is not entirely to blame for the colds and flu symptoms that seem to be more common from November through March, cold sores do seem to be linked to the temperatures outdoors. Cold sore season An increase in cold sores is possible because the winter season tends to reactivate the HSV-1 virus responsible for the sores, according to Abreva. Exposure to cold temperatures as well as drastic temperature shifts, like moving from the cold outdoors into a warm house, can be traumatic enough to trigger a cold sore outbreak. Several different factors contribute to why cold sores are more likely to surface in the winter than during other times of the year. Harsh, winter winds can dry out the

lips and make them more hospitable to the virus that causes cold sores. Dry, warm air in heated homes can encourage the virus to spread and break out more often. In addition, less vitamin D in the body and an immune system weakened by winter can increase a person’s risk of developing a cold sore. Other notable cold sore triggers can be elevated in the winter. Planning for holiday celebrations can elevate stress, which is a trigger for HSV-1 outbreaks. The longer a person is feeling stressed, the more likely he or she will develop a cold sore. Illnesses, such as colds, flu and bacterial infections, that seem to pop up when the weather is cold also can trigger cold sores. When the body is busy fighting one invader, it is more vulnerable from attacks by other bacteria and viruses.

Inflammation in the body, like that which accompanies chronic arthritis, may overproduce the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol can suppress the immune system and trigger a cold sore attack. Those with arthritis and other inflammation issues may find winter weather exacerbates their symptoms. Some people may counteract dark days of winter by visiting tanning salons and exposing themselves to artificial UV rays. This can irritate tissues around the mouth and also lead to a cold sore outbreak.

riasis, his or her skin cells are produced at an accelerated rate, resulting in red, raised and scaly patches on the skin known as plaques. Plaques are well-defined and typically appear on the scalp, lower back, face, palms, and soles of feet. About one-third of people with psoriasis have a family member with the disease. Studies show the emotional and social effects of psoriasis are more significant for women than men, but both can be affected negatively by symptoms. There is no cure for psoriasis, and some people are affected more severely than others. In addition, certain factors can aggravate psoriasis and lead to flare-ups. Understanding these triggers may help those affected by the disease better manage their symptoms. Although some of these triggers are not backed up by firm scientific evidence, many

people with psoriasis attest to their accuracy. Overexposure to sunlight Exposure to sunlight and other forms of ultraviolet rays can be beneficial in reducing symptoms of psoriasis, and some dermatologists may even prescribe UV treatment. However, overexposure to the sun can worsen symptoms, particularly if men and women get a sunburn. There is a fine line between what is too much sun and enough sun, which is why those with psoriasis should only undergo UV treatment under the care of a dermatologist. Stress Doctors don’t know exactly why, but psoriasis and stress seem to be linked. As stress escalates, flare-ups of psoriasis may become more common. In turn, flare-ups can lead to additional stress. Finding ways to reduce stress may result in clearer skin. Deep breathing, yoga and meditation may help alleviate stress. Hot water Bathing or washing in very hot water can worsen symptoms of psoriasis. Use lukewarm water and a moisturizing soap. Some dermatologists recommend colloidal oatmeal or Epsom salts in a bath to soften skin, relieve itching and help slough off scaly patches. Additionally, avoid situations that will lead to dry skin, such as exposure to hot or cold weather. Use moisturizer and reapply as needed. Certain foods Some people with psoriasis note that certain foods and beverages trigger their flareups. Tomato- and pepper-based products and acidic or alcoholic beverages may cause flare-ups. Infections After a bout of strep throat or an ear infection, people with psoriasis may find their condition takes a turn for the worse. Thought doctors don’t quite understand why, certain infections and medications to treat those conditions can cause psoriasis to act up. Discuss your psoriasis with your physician before taking any medication.

~ Where To Dine ~

Delectable: A Wine App That Could Revolutionize Drinking By David White Alexander Niehenke began to appreciate wine ten years ago. But for the first four years, it was simply a beverage he enjoyed with dinner from time to time, especially when cooking at home. And then he put his nose in a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon from Justin, a winery based in Paso Robles, California. He was at a bachelor party, where few attendees were paying any attention to the wine inside their glasses. But for Niehenke, the aromas were intoxicating. Something clicked. So he promptly dove into the world of wine. For the next five years, Niehenke's passion for wine grew steadily and predictably. As a resident of San Francisco, weekend trips to Napa Valley and Sonoma were easy - so he started driving north regularly. He began attending tastings, reading wine publications, and even collecting. And then he discovered Delectable, a mobile wine app. Since downloading the program last fall, Niehenke has been moving towards oenophilia at lightning speed. "The app has taught me about new producers, new regions, and even new varieties," he explained. "I actually just learned about orange wine -- and tried my first one -- thanks to it." An orange wine is made by treating white wine grapes as if they're red -- in other words, soaking the skins

and seeds alongside the juice during fermentation. Orange wines have become quite popular among some of the nation's hippest sommeliers, and thanks to Delectable, Niehenke can see what those sommeliers are opening each night. Delectable traces its roots to 2011, when Alex Fishman was working in Dubai for Palantir, the data analytics firm best known for its work with the U.S. intelligence community. Shortly before returning home, Fishman and his girlfriend came upon a wine they'd enjoyed on many occasions. Wanting to remember the bottle so they could purchase it in the United States, they looked to the label for information -- but were overwhelmed. Fishman recalled this experience a few months later over breakfast with in New York with Aaron Vanderbeek, a videogame designer. The two were old friends, and Fishman was detailing his desire to launch a mission-focused company -- ideally, one that would "make the world a more delicious place." In short order, they realized that there weren't any good mobile apps for wine enthusiasts. So Fishman and Vanderbeek began building Delectable. Today, the app identifies all a wine's details from a photo and allows users to review and purchase wines. It also helps users discover industry professionals -- winemakers, sommeliers, and critics -- and see what they're drinking. It's no wonder why Delec-

table has been described as "the Instagram of wine." Thanks in large part to this feature, Delectable could revolutionize consumption. As Fishman told me, "the wine market is broken because of a lack of information. That's why consumers buy points. But the point system is flawed because people have radically different tastes." As consumers discover other enthusiasts on Delectable with similar tastes, they'll discover new wines worth drinking. After all, it doesn't make any sense to take the advice of a critic who has slapped "98 points!" on a bottle unless one shares that critic's preferences. Delectable solves what Fishman calls "the matching problem" consumers face with wine critics. Niehenke is certainly drinking better thanks to the app. "When looking for new wines, I used to call my knowledgeable friends. Now, I can just open up Delectable to see what they're drinking," he explained. "When I realized I could follow pros, too, wow -- that was cool. I love seeing what my favorite winemakers -- people like Ross Cobb and Cathy Corison -- are drinking. Now, I follow people with similar palates to mine and un-follow people with different tastes." Fishman is convinced that his app will fulfill its mission. "If we do this right," he concluded, "the amount of global happiness that's derived from wine will go up. People will drink better and better wines, since our sugges-

tions will be tailored to individual users." David White is the founder and editor of Terroirist.com,

which was named "Best Overall Wine Blog" at the 2013 Wine Blog Awards. His columns are housed at Grape Collective.

...TRAVEL from page 12 pet...this means walks. Ask hotel personnel about the best places to walk your pet. Treat the hotel room with respect... this means covering any furniture and beds that your pet may be allowed on. If traveling with a cat, place their litter boxes in the bathroom. This will make clean up much easier. It's recommended to not leave your pet unattended in your hotel room. Even the best-behaved pets can bark and become destructive when in new surroundings. If you must leave your pet alone, be sure that it's for a very short time. Alert the front desk that your pet is alone in the room and try putting on the TV or a radio to make your pet more comfortable. If your pet travels with a crate or kennel, place them in it when leaving the room. In addition, place a note on the hotel door indicating that your pet is in the room. Don't leave any pests behind. Before leaving home be sure to give your pet a good cleaning and de-flea and de-tick them. This means a good flea and tick bath along with utilizing preventative flea and tick control. Leaving behind a stinky

smell, or worse, fleas or ticks is the kind of thing that makes accommodations change their pet friendly policy. In addition, if a deposit is required, these types of things could very well prevent you from getting it back. Accidents happen! Even pets that have never had an "accident" indoors may do so under stress. Bring along a disinfectant as well as a rag in the event that you have to clean up after your pet. Not doing so could also cause a loss of deposit. To ensure that you're welcomed back, keep your pet on a leash and avoid taking them into dining rooms and other restricted areas. Following some common sense rules will help ensure that you and your pet have a happy and safe trip. TripsWithPets.com offers resources that ensure pets are welcome, happy, and safe while traveling. The website features a directory of pet friendly hotels and accommodations across the United States and Canada, as well as airline and car rental pet policies; and other pet travel resources. Berwick Academy MILLBROOK SCHOOL – DEC. 13 The Berwick Academy Boys Varsity Hockey Team dropped a tough game to the Millbrook

The Tour de France began in 1903 as a publicity stunt. French journalist Geo Lefevre initially conceived the idea of the grueling cycling competition in an attempt to boost the circulation of L’Auto, the daily sports newspaper where LefeSchool from Millbrook, NY this Saturday at the Eaglebrook School. Brent Phillips, Rochester, NH, opened up the scoring for the Bulldogs, but after that it was Millbrook (2-2-2) answering back with a pair of their own in the first period followed by another pair in the final period. Goalie Joe Lazzaro turned away 42 shots in the loss. Berwick drops to 2-4 in this early stage of the season but hopes to right things with a two away games this week, Pingree and Exeter.

vre worked. Together with his editor, Henri Desgrange, Lefevre developed a 1,500-mile clockwise loop of the country that began in Paris and continued through Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, and Nantes before returning to Paris. While today’s race includes 21 stages, the initial race included just six, though each stage averaged 250 miles. By contrast, none of the 21 stages that make up the current Tour de France exceed 150 miles. Those six stages included the especially difficult first stage, which stretched almost 300 miles from Paris to Lyon. But the distance of stages was not the only See TOUR page 38...

Dear Elizabeth, Thank you for your great tips and emails. Re: How File attributes become Read-only. I have discovered one way this happens: I backup my folders and files to Read-only CDs or DVDs. During this process, the backup program (I use Nero) automatically marks these folders and files as Read-only. Later I copy and paste these files to my current computer (or a new computer). Changing this attribute can be done in batches: Select the folder, click on Properties, then click on Read-only (to remove checkmark). When you click on Apply, it asks if you want to apply changes to this folder, sub-folders and

Dear Computer Lady, I recently bought a new HP Desk top computer to replace my old HP. My old computer had pin connectors on the mouse and keyboard the new has a different type of connector making my old mouse and keyboard useless. My question is do they have an adapter to go from the pin to the new connector? I am 78 yrs old and not to computer smart but I read your post all the time and thought

if anybody knows you would. Thank you for any help you can give me, Al Dear Al, The short answer to your question is, "no". You will have to purchase a new keyboard and mouse for your new computer. There are adapters that convert ps2 connectors (the round ones with pins) to USB (which is what your new computer uses) however those only work with a mouse and/or keyboard that are made to support both the ps/2 and USB interface. Since your old mouse and keyboard probably don't support both interfaces, they won't work with the adapters. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, When I used Windows XP years ago I learned how to TILE, that is - to place 2 photographs side by side or 1 above the other on the computer screen. It was

very handy to compare 2 similar photos of the same scene or object to decide which 'shot' was the best to keep. Now that I have Windows 7 I don't know how to accomplish that procedure. Can you give me the steps to perform for this operation? Steve

I find your information to be valuable; however, I have not been on this list very long. I do have a question, I have Windows 7, how do I delete all of the places I have looked at once or twice? Thank you so much, Valerie

Dear Steve, In Windows 7, you can tile two windows side by side quite easily. Using your mouse, drag the title bar of one window to the left side of your screen. When the cursor hits the edge of the screen, the window will automatically fill just the left half of your desktop. Next, drag the other window to the right edge of your screen. Again, when the cursor touches the right edge, the window will automatically fill just the right half of your desktop. Have fun comparing your photos. Elizabeth

Dear Valerie, I'm guessing that you are asking about places you have looked at online. All you have to do is open your Internet options and delete your history. Here is how: 1. Click on "Start", then click on "Control Panel". 2. In the Control Panel window click on the "Network and Internet" category. 3. Click on "Internet Options" to open the Internet properties dialog box. 4. In the "Browsing History" section, click the "Delete..." button. 5. In the dialog box that appears, make sure "History" is selected, then click the "Delete" button at the bottom of the dialog box. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? ...COLD from page 17 more dangerous HSV-2. According to the National Institutes of Health, HSV-1 infects more than half of the United States population by the time they reach their 20s. The Mayo Clinic Says about 90 percent of adults worldwide — even those who have never experienced symptoms of an infection — test positive for the virus that causes cold sores. Cold sores, also called fever blisters, are fluid-filled lesions that occur on and around the lips. Cold sores are contagious and can be spread through close personal contact. There is no

cure for HSV-1 infections, and blisters may appear sporadically. Cold sores are most contagious when they have fluid present, but infection also can occur when blisters are not visible. Once the herpes virus is contracted, it remains in the body forever. Preventing cold sores A key way to prevent a cold sore outbreak is to avoid people who experience cold sores. Don’t share utensils or food and avoid physical contact with the areas where a sore is present. If you have had cold sores before, look for ways to lower

your stress levels, work to maintain a strong immune system, avoid harsh winter weather by wrapping your face in a scarf and keeping your lips moisturized to reduce your risk of another outbreak. In addition to prescription medication treatment for cold sores, supplementation with vitamin C, vitamin E and l-lysine may help. This article was provided by MetroCreative. Unlike today’s cyclists who compete as teams, those who competedin the initial Tour de France rode as individuals and were not allowed to receive any assistance once the race began. As a result, many riders rode with spare tires and tubes attached to their torsos so they could address any tires that flattened during the race. In addition, riders who participated
