Teens Use Matthew 25:35 Meals to Help Those in Need YORK COUNTY “We give thanks for the food we are about to receive. We are so grateful for this opportunity to be together out of the rain and in this warm place where we can enjoy each other’s company.” A large crowd filled the St. Ignatius parish hall in Sanford on December 10 as Bishop Robert P. Deeley offered a prayer of thanksgiving for a gathering bred of kindness that has become a monthly occurrence thanks to a special group of teens.
On the second Tuesday of each month, teens from Holy Spirit Parish in Wells and Kennebunk and St. Thérèse of Lisieux Parish in Sanford come together to prepare and serve dinner to upwards of 100 community members at the Matthew 25:35 Meal. The meals are free, and everyone is invited to attend. Offering the monthly meals is a way to teach the teens about the importance of service, particularly the Bible verse Matthew 25:35 “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and
you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me...”. “When you give these kids an opportunity to help, they just want to,” said Carolyn Houston, director of faith formation at Holy Spirit Parish. “They want to do something to help serve. This dinner gives them that opportunity, and they are all psyched to be here.” When the two parishes first came up with the idea of holding the dinner in November of 2017, nobody, not even the organizSee MEALS page 4...

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas By Clement Clarke Moore ‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; As I drew in my hand, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound. The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; Had just settled down for a long winter’s nap, A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! Away to the window I flew like a flash, His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow; The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below, The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath; But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer, He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly. With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name; And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, “Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN! Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; On, COMET! on CUPID! on, DONNER and BLITZEN! He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!” And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose; As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky, He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,

deer antlers, holiday hats, and other cheery apparel. Friendships have emerged between the young people from different towns. Some volunteers are younger, some are older, but what unites them is the desire to be a part of something bigger than themselves, displaying a wisdom beyond their years. “The (teens) ran a donation drive for socks, hats, mittens, scarves, and gloves,” said Houston. “They are all set up at the front door so that people at the dinner can grab what they need for themselves or their families. It’s incredible.” Attending his first Matthew 25:35 Meal on Tuesday, Bishop Deeley thanked the young people individually for their contributions as he toured the kitchen and hall as well as collectively when speaking to the crowd prior to the meal. “We give thanks to these young people who have prepared a beautiful meal for us. Their efforts have created an environment in which we can enjoy each other. This is special.” The next Matthew 25:35 Meal is scheduled for Tuesday, January 14. ers, had any idea of what would transpire. St. Thérèse of Lisieux Parish would provide the venue, while Holy Spirit Parish would supply the food. Other than that, it was a leap of faith. “From the start, you had some families, some parishioners, some who were just people looking to get together with others,” said Shelly Carpenter, parish catechetical leader at St. Thérèse of Lisieux Parish. “It’s didn’t take long to become a whole community thing.” The lifeblood of the meals has been the close to 40 teenagers who have helped along the way. Observing them as they welcome each guest, help seniors to their tables, and race around the kitchen to ensure everybody gets a hot meal is inspiring, as is their desire to live out their Catholic faith in part by serving their neighbors. “It feels great,” said Kaitlyn, a teen from Holy Spirit Parish as she scooped ziti onto a plate. “It’s really important to serve the community. Even when it is busy and it feels like work, it feels really good.” The event took on an Advent feel on Tuesday, as Christmas carols played from speakers in the hall which was decorated for Christmas by the volunteers, many wearing rein-

The public is invited to view the exhibit during regular library hours when the gallery is not in use for library programs. “I’m 84, but as an artist I’m only nine-years-old since I didn’t pick up a brush until I was 75... Don’t ever believe that just because you have suddenly become old that your creative, intellectual, passionate life is over. That only happens when you die, so until then just keep on trucking,” said Blayne.

YORK COUNTY U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) recently joined members of his staff, local officials, and Maine people for the ribbon cutting of his new Biddeford office, located at 227 Main Street. The new office, which is centrally located and available via public transit, will improve Senator King’s efforts to be accessible to his constituents in southern York County. “When it came time to look for a new office in Southern Maine, the old adage stuck in my mind: ‘location, location, location,’” said Senator King. “This office is located on the heart of Biddeford’s Main Street,
meaning we’re more visible and more accessible to Maine people. Whether you’re looking to share your opinion on the latest Washington happenings or need help navigating the federal bureaucracy, just know that we’re open

garden bordering their school’s playground. It’s a scene that has played out annually at WES since the fall of 2003. Shortly after lunch, about 115 kindergarteners emerged from school one group at a time to do the planting. Assisting them, and kindergarteners like
them for the past 16 years, was Community Resource CoorSee SPRING page 9...

Foley, who organizes this annual event, first spoke to each group of students about the nature of bulbs and planting them in the holes that the volunteers had pre-dug. As in past years, the bulbs were purchased by the school’s PTSA. “It’s sometimes difficult for kindergarten students to understand that they have to wait until spring to see results,” observed Foley. “One little boy wanted to stand by his hole and wait for the bulb to grow. (There is) no immediate gratification with bulb planting!” Foley added.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, I read your column every week and find it to be very helpful and written for the non-technical minds. Thank you. I have a question about FaceBook tags. Is there a FaceBook setting so that I will not be included in my friends’ tags and still follow my friends? Thank you, Linda Dear Linda, When your friends make a post, or post a picture, they can tag you by mentioning your

name, or tagging you in the picture. While there doesn’t appear to be a setting to stop your friends from tagging you (sometimes simply asking them to not tag you will be the best solution) you can turn on a setting in Facebook that will allow you to manually approve posts that you have been tagged in before they show up on your timeline. It is important to note that this will only stop them from showing up on your timeline, not other peoples timelines. There is also a setting where you can control who can see posts and photos that you have been tagged in. Both these settings are found in the same place. 1. Click on the small triangle located at the top-right corner of your Facebook page. 2. Click on “Settings” in the drop down menu. 3. When the Settings page loads, click on “Timeline and Tagging” in the left column. 4. In the “Review” section, turn on the setting that says, “Review posts you’re tagged in before the post appears on your timeline”. 5. In the Tagging section, where it says, “who can see posts you’re tagged in on your timeline?” you can change the settings to “Only Me” so that

others can’t see the posts. You can change as many settings as you want in this section, in fact if you change everything to “Only Me” you will be almost invisible on Facebook. I hope this helps. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I love reading your column. It’s so full of information. I would like to know how to shorten the URL for webpage links. I know there’s software to do this but not sure how it works and which one is the best one. Thanks for your useful newsletter. Teresa Dear Teresa, It is actually very easy to create a shortened URL and there are a few online services out there that will do it for you. First, copy the URL of the web page you want to link to. Next go to one of the online URL shortening services. I like to use www.tinyurl. com, but there are quite a few out there Hootsuite has one and Bitly is quite popular. When you go to the website, just paste in your long URL, click the button and you will be given a shorter URL to copy and paste into your email message, facebook page, tweet, or whatever you want to use it for. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a 3-year-old HP laptop, a 2-year-old desktop and a 2-year-old HP Officejet printer. Both computers are connected wirelessly to the printer and for 95% of the time, everything is fine. However, every 5 or 6 months, the printer goes offline all by itself and I am unable to print. In the past a friend was able to come over and resolve the issue within a matter of minutes and some computer strokes. Then I would be OK for 5 or 6 more months. Unfortunately, he never left me his procedure in writing. I have gone on HP’s
web site, on You Tube, etc. with no success. The responses on You Tube seem to indicate this is somewhat common. Can you help? Thank you in advance. Dave S. Dear Dave, This is a fairly common problem with some printers. I am usually able to fix it by re-installing the printer. Just get out the disk that came with the printer and run the installation program again. Sometimes, you need to remove the printer from the control panel first, but not always. This might not be the exact method your friend used, but this is the easiest method to use. Elizabeth
you click print, the default printer is automatically chosen, and unless you select a different one, your document will print on the default printer. A good place to start learning about your computer is actually a Goodwill Community Foundation site at www.gcflearnfree.org/computerbasics. Hope this helps you get started. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth (pictured below) has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. To submit a question, email her at elizabeth.boston@ gmail.com.
Dear Computer Lady, I’m new to this computer stuff. I would like to find out what is an icon, what is a cookie, URL, what does default mean? How can I educate myself? Hope u can steer me. Thanks, Margaret Dear Margaret, An icon is a symbol on your computer. A good example is the little picture of the trash can on your computer. It is an icon that leads to your trash when you double click on it. Another icon example is the blue e which leads to Edge. A cookie is a small text file that helps websites remember your settings. You really don’t need to worry about cookies, and you will not see them in your normal computer usage. A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is a unique address for a file on the internet. For example, if you want to go to Google, you could type in their URL (http://www.google. com) to get to their website. Default means the choice that is made if you don’t specify a different choice. A good example would be if you have several printers hooked up to your computer. One printer is set as the default printer. When

BUSINESS & FINANCE Holiday Shopping: How to Stay Under Budget
If you’re concerned about spending a lot over the holidays, you’re not alone. According to the National Retail Federation, consumers plan to spend a total of $1,048 on average for items such as decorations, food and gifts as well as other purchases for themselves and their families. Here’s how you can find the best last-minute finds and stay within budget: Use personal finance management tools. For example, digital tools help banking customers improve their financial wellness by creating
highly personalized plans that allow them to set financial goals, track spending and keep track of savings. These tools are particularly helpful during holiday seasons when spending can derail even the most carefully designed budget. Account alerts are another helpful tool. They can let you know when you exceed your spending budget or when your accounts hit a certain level so that you know when to say “when” instead of continuing to shop. Alerts can be sent via text message or email. Stack Your Savings. Be-
sides finding a great end-of-year deal, stack your savings by using a coupon on top of the discount. Then, use a credit card to score cash back rewards or reward points that can be used for gift cards or merchandise. This will help you save even more. Another thing to consider is an automatic saving programs which automatically transfers money to your savings account every time you make a purchase with your debit card, so you can effortlessly set aside money to pay down debt. Stick to Your List. To stay under budget, stick to your list
Common Signs of Giving Scams Many people are excited by the prospects of supporting causes they care about. Charitable donations are how millions of people across the globe express such support, and many charities would not be able to function without donors. Taking advantage of an opportunity to help others is fulfilling and exciting. It can be easy to get caught up in the emotion of giving let your guard down. Doing so opens prospective donors up to charitable fraud, which makes victims of both donors and the people and organizations they want to help. The Federal Trade Commission notes the following are some potential indicators of giving scams. Poor reports and ratings: Various organizations report on charities, sharing information about how they use donations and how successful their programs are. Give.org, guidestar.org, charitywatch.org, and charitynavigator.org are some examples of organizations that vet and/or rate charities. Reports are accessible online, and donors should utilize these before giving to ensure their dollars do the most good. Unusual payment requests: It’s a big red flag if charities ask for donations via gift card or wire transfer, or if they insist donations be made over the phone. When making donations, the FTC strongly advises donors only submit payment via credit card or personal check. In addition, donors should simply hang up the phone if organizations insist on immediate payments. Look-alikes: Some perpetrators of charitable fraud are successful because they
set up charities with names that are only slightly different from reputable, widely recognized charities. Before making any donations, donors should make sure the charity they’re giving to is the one they intend to help, and not a look-alike, fraudulent organization. Evasiveness about where donation dollars are going: Transparency is a good sign when it comes to gauging the reputation of charitable organizations. Reputable organizations should be willing to indicate exactly where you’re donation dollars go. In fact, many take a proactive approach and include such information on their websites. Reconsider donating to any organization that appears hesitant to share how donation
dollars are spent. Online donations: While most organizations allow donors to submit donations via their websites, before donating online, check the fine print to determine how much of your donation is going toward fees or other charges. Excessive fees is not necessarily indicative of fraud, but they can divert money from the cause you’re hoping to help. Donating via personal check or over the phone using a credit card may ensure more of your money goes to the cause and not the cost of maintaining a website and processing online donations. Recognizing signs of charitable fraud can help donors donate wisely. More information about charitable fraud is available at www.consumer.ftc.gov.
of giftees, and get detailed with how much you’ll be spending on each person. Besides listing specific items to gift, think of general interests and categories to explore that will make it easier to find something at a discount. Shop at Brick-and-Mortar Stores. Because stores are eager to get rid of their inventory, you’re more likely to find marked-down items by stepping inside a store. If you’re going the brick-and-mortar route and want to avoid running around town looking for the best deals, stick to just a few major retailers to do the majority of your shopping. You can also check to see if a particular item is in stock, and then reserve it, online. Look for Free Standard Shipping. While this depends on just how last minute your shopping is, you might also be able to take advantage of a free trial that includes standard shipping. You can also save on shipping by having items sent directly to those on your gift list. Or, have your gifts shipped to someone other than the giftee and ask a helper elf to assist in the gift wrapping. Don’t forget to ship in the fewest batches possible.
Lower Your Gift Per Budget. If you’re cutting it pretty close to your holiday budget, consider lowering the amount you originally allocated for certain people on your list. Then get creative by finding items to meet that budget. To maximize deals, snag several smaller gifts at a discount, then bundle them together during shipping. Combine Gifts. For instance, instead of buying something for every coworker in your department, consider buying something everyone can enjoy such as an assortment of baked goodies. If you’re shopping for entire families, think of getting a single gift for couples or donate to a charity on behalf of a family. As far as holiday shopping goes, it’s definitely possible to get everything done on time and under budget. All it takes is being savvy with how and where you spend your hard-earned dollars during this stressful time of year. Survey Shows 28.7% of HS Students Use E-Cigarettes AUGUSTA The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention released the results of the 2019 Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey, showing that more Maine high school students are using e-cigarettes than the national average. In response, Lance Boucher, Senior Division Director of State Public Policy for the American Lung Association, issued the following statement: “This morning, the
Maine Center for Disease Control & Prevention reported that 28.7% of Maine high school students are using e-cigarettes, which is higher than the national average. Unfortunately, this news is further evidence that bold and urgent action is needed to address the epidemic of youth e-cigarette use, and that we must do more to implement policies that prevent and reduce tobacco use for people of all ages. The state of Maine should address this epidemic by passing legis-

Clearing the market of flavors could help to immediately reverse this alarming trend of skyrocketing use. Tobacco remains the #1 cause of preventable death and disease in Maine and the nation.
The American Lung Association supports Governor Mills’ effort to raise awareness of the risks and dangers of tobacco use, including e-cigarettes, especially among parents and children. We look forward to working with the administration and the legislature to commit to stronger protections for Maine’s youth by fully implementing the state’s Tobacco 21 statute and considering other evidenced based policies such as restricting the sale of flavored tobacco products, in-
December a Leading Month for U.S. Home Fires Glittering decorations, holiday meals and treats, enjoying the warmth of home on a wintry day – these are hallmarks of the holiday season. However, these traditions and festivities also present an increased risk of fire, making December a leading month for U.S. home fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Christmas Day and Christmas Eve are two of the top three days for home cooking fires and the top two days for home candle fires. “While the threat of fire does increase during the holiday season, there’s no need to let that put a damper on your holiday plans,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “Once you know where potential hazards exist, taking some simple steps to minimize them can help ensure a festive, fire-safe season.” Home fires that began when
decorations caught fire caused an average of three civilian deaths, 34 civilian fire injuries and $12 million in direct property damage per year from 2013 to 2017. In 44% of these fires, the decoration was too close to a heat source. Ensure that decorations are kept at least three feet away from heat sources, especially candles. 57% of December home decoration fires were started by candles, compared to 32% in January through November. In addition, December is the peak month for candle fires. 60% of home candle fires started because a flammable item was too close to the candle. In 13% of the fires, the candle was left unattended or abandoned. Christmas trees - Christmas tree fires are not as common as fires started by other decorations, but when they do occur, they are much more likely to be serious. An annual average of 160 home fires began with Christmas

trees. On average, one of every 52 reported home Christmas tree fires resulted in a death, compared to an average of one death per 135 total reported home fires. Electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in more than two of every five (44%) home Christmas tree fires, with decorative lights the leading type of equipment involved. Cooking - Cooking is the leading cause of U.S. home fires year-round; unattended cooking is the leading cause of these fires, accounting for 31% of home cooking fires. Christmas Day is the second-leading day for home cooking fires, with 69% more fires than the average daily number. Christmas Eve is not far behind, with 58% more fires than the daily average. Heating - Heating equipment is the second-leading cause of U.S. home fires, with nearly half of all home heating fires occurring in December, January and February. The leading factor contributing to home heating fires (27%) was failure to clean, principally from solid-fueled heating equipment, primarily chimneys. Most home heating fire deaths (86%) involved stationary or portable space heaters. In the majority of these deaths, something that could catch fire was too close to the heater. Health & Fitness Funding Secured for Homelessness Prevention WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Susan Collins, the Chairman of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee, announced that the fiscal year (FY) 2020 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Bill includes more than $2.8 billion to help communities design and implement local solutions to end homelessness. The legislation now awaits a vote by the full U.S. House of Representatives. “This important funding will bolster Maine’s efforts to assist our state’s most vulnerable citizens with additional resources and promote their health, independence, and overall wellbeing. I am particularly pleased that this bill supports new housing vouchers for veterans who have sacrificed so much to protect our freedoms as well as initiatives to find permanent housing for homeless and runaway youth,” said Senator Collins. “As the Chairman of the Housing Appropriations Subcommittee, I have championed funding for these important programs, and I will continue to work to prevent and end homelessness in Maine.” Provisions authored by Senator Collins that will benefit Maine homeless programs include: Homeless Assistance Grants: The bill includes $2.4 billion in order to fully meet the renewal needs of the Homeless Assistance Grant program and provides an additional $290 million for Emergency Solutions Grants. Homeless Youth: The bill includes $80 million in funding for efforts to end youth homelessness in both urban and rural areas. In August, Senator Collins announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded $3,354,677 to the Maine State Housing Authority (MaineHousing) to combat youth homelessness throughout the State of Maine. Victims and Survivors of Domestic Violence: The bill includes $50 million for new rapid rehousing projects that serve victims and survivors of domestic violence. Section 8 Vouchers: The bill includes $25 million for

new family unification vouchers of which $20 million will be used to prevent youth exiting foster care from becoming homeless. Housing for Veterans: The bill includes $40 million for new HUD-VASH vouchers to reduce veterans’ homelessness. Since the HUD-VASH program was first established in 2008, Maine has received 238 vouchers to support homeless veterans. Senator Collins’ efforts have contributed to homelessness among veterans declining by 50 percent since 2010. In April, Senator Collins hosted Secretary Wilkie in Maine to visit a veteranowned small business, participate in the groundbreaking for a new veterans residential care facility, and tour an organization that provides housing for homeless veterans.

Senate Unanimously Passes Resolution Honoring First All-Female Spacewalk
WASHINGTON, D.C. The Senate recently unanimously passed a resolution led by U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and cosponsored by all 23 of their female colleagues congratulating astronauts Dr. Jessica U. Meir and Christina H. Koch for the historic accomplishment of completing the first all-female spacewalk. The bipartisan resolution also supports the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) efforts to fully integrate women into the astronaut corps and ensure that one of the next humans to walk on the moon will be a woman. On October 18, Dr. Meir and Koch conducted a seven hour and seven minute spacewalk to replace a power controller — the first all-female spacewalk in history, and the 14th
and 15th women, respectively, to conduct a spacewalk. “Dr. Jessica Meir’s and Christina Koch’s completion of NASA’s first all-female spacewalk marked an incredible moment in our nation’s history and will be venerated for generations to come,” said Senator Collins. “This bipartisan resolution, supported by all 25 female Senators, recognizes Jessica and Christina for their extraordinary accomplishments. They continue to inspire students throughout the country to pursue their dreams.” “Jessica Meir and Christina Koch made history this year when they completed the first all-female spacewalk. This important milestone will leave a lasting impression on our space program and on young women across the country. Jessica and Christina have showed us what
the future looks like and I look forward to following their careers and the careers of other women as they continue to make our nation proud,” said Senator Stabenow. Dr. Meir is a native of Caribou. She has a degree in biology from Brown University, a master’s in space studies from the International Space University, and a Ph.D. in marine biology from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Jessica is the first woman from Maine — and only the third person from Maine ever — to go on a space flight. Koch is a native of Grand Rapids, MI. She has a degree in electrical engineering and physics, as well as a master’s degree in electrical engineering from North Carolina State University. In 2013, Dr. Meir and Koch
were among the four women and four men selected from 6,100 applications for NASA’s 21st class of astronauts and began training for future space flights. NASA first began to admit women into its astronaut program in 1978. Last month, Senator Collins talked with Dr. Meir on the phone to congratulate her on completing the first all-women spacewalk. In October, Dr. Meir spoke via a live video with hundreds of Caribou students in
grades 3-12 and answered questions. In June, Senators Collins and Angus King and Representative Jared Golden sent a letter to NASA in support of Eastern Aroostook RSU 39 and Caribou’s request to participate in this videoconference with Dr. Meir while she was in orbit. In 2016, Senator Collins and Dr. Meir were two of the six inaugural inductees of the Caribou High School Alumni Hall of Fame.

Rodney A. Shain, 89 YOR K C OU N T Y – Rodney A. Shain Sr. of Sanford and Acton entered into Heaven’s Glory on Wednesday, December 11, 2019, at the Newton Center in Sanford, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Hallowell on August 28, 1930, the son of Harry and Ethel Shain. Following high school graduation, he entered the Navy and proudly served on the Aircraft Carrier U.S S. Wasp. While stationed at Norfolk,
VA, he met Barbara Taylor, a registered nurse, who became his wife and mother of their five children. They settled in Maine where he worked for Hood Dairy while attending Gorham State Teachers College and earning a B.S. degree in Education. He later earned a Masters Degree in Education at the University of Maine in Orono. Rod ended his teaching career in 1980. He began a new venture when he started making ice cream. In 1984 Shain’s Restaurant, Ice Cream Shop and Vegetable Stand, was established in Sanford. This business grew and flourished and is now known as Shain’s of Maine, serving and distributing ice cream over a large area of New England. Following the death of his first wife in 2002, Rod found new love and in 2005, married Judith Brazier. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Eric Brazier Memorial Fund, RiverRidge Brain Injury Facility, 3 Brazier Lane, Kennebunk, ME 04043 c/o Cynthia Buzzell. Visitation was held at CarllHeald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale on December 16. The funeral service was held on December 17 at the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church, 10 Pleasant St., Springvale, followed by a private burial with military honors at the family cemetery on Grammar Road in Sanford. Sam Davies Vaught, 83
OGU NQUIT – Sam Davies Vaught died peacefully at York Hospital on Sunday, December 8, 2019 after a lengthy illness, with his long-time partner and husband, Sumner Nystedt, by his bedside. Born in Charleston, WV, Sam found his way North, first working at Salem Hospital, and then Tufts Medical Center. In the early ‘60s, Sam discovered Ogunquit, operating the wellknown Country Shop in Perkins Cove, first with his partner Donald Berglund, and later as a sole proprietor, until retiring in 2002. Sam continued being a presence in Perkins Cove, residing in the building that had been the shop. Even though the business had closed, tourists would still come by to admire his gardens, flowing down to The Cove. Over the years, Sam was a supporter of the Ogunquit Museum of Modern Art, and in particular, The Ogunquit Playhouse. Sam was fond of saying, See VAUGHT page 30...

We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

He’s very intelligent and figures things out. His sister, Santini is just as wonderful, just a little more reserved than her brother. This pair balances one another perfectly. Santini is very lovable and sweet and beautiful with her all-black shiny coat. The other pair are Tucker

to the tips of oak and fruit tree branches. If you see a web, clip it out and destroy it by dropping it in a bucket of soapy water and soaking it overnight; do not leave it on the ground. The caterpillars become active as soon as warmer weather arrives, so do this task as soon as possible. It is also important to clip webs before midApril because of the increased risk of toxic hair exposure. Browntail caterpillar webs are found throughout Maine and New Hampshire. For more than 100 years, Maine people have known that “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” when it comes to browntail moths. Learn how to recognize browntail moth webs by visiting the websites below, then go and check your trees for their presence. If you find them and can reach them, clip and destroy them. If they are out of reach, now is the time to call and schedule professional help. If you think you have found webs, but are not sure, contact the Maine Forest Service for help. Additional advice may be obtained from your nearest Cooperative Extension office or Soil & Water Conservation District. A video showing how to clip the webs, a list of arborists who can prune webs out of your reach, and a list of licensed pesticide applicators can be found at www.maine. gov. For more information, call 1-866-811-5695 or text your zip code to 898-211.

HELP WANTED
STATEWIDE Entomologists from the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry are reminding everyone that now is the best time to remove browntail caterpillars from trees. Browntail caterpillars cause a poison ivy-like rash and they are impacting a broad swath of Maine. Contact with this caterpillar’s hairs can cause severe reactions for some individuals. Browntail caterpillars spend the winter webbed in silken wrapped leaves on the tips of hardwood branches, especially oak and fruit trees. Now through mid-April is when to look for the bright white silk tying a few leaves

...VAUGHT from page 23 “The music from the summer productions kept him going throughout the long winter months”. The last fifteen years of Sam’s life, he became “a friend of Bill’s”, touching many of its members. His quiet kindness and generosity will be missed by his long-time friend Terry Shallow of Wells, and the many others who came in contact with him. In the final months of Sam’s life, he was very grateful to the staff of York Hospital, the Visiting Nurses, and especially, Dr. Mary Richmond. A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, January 11 at 11 a.m. in the First Parish Church, 180 York St., York. Sam and Sumner have asked that remembrances in his name be made to: The Ogunquit Playhouse Children’s Theatre PO Box 915, Ogunquit, ME 03907.
