~ News ~ Maine Turnpike Turns 70 STATEWIDE Marking seven decades of safe, swift, and scenic travel, the Maine Turnpike Authority will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the opening of the Maine Turnpike’s first phase, the 47-mile, Kittery-to-Portland superhighway on December 13. Before the Maine Turnpike opened on December 13, 1947, it could take half a day to drive from Portland to Kittery. After the Turnpike opened, only 47 minutes. What began as a vision shared by Maine legislators in 1940 and was then delayed by America’s entry into World War II, became a reality in 1947 as the Maine Turnpike debuted as the nation’s second superhighway and immediately set a number of historic firsts. • Maine’s first mile-a-minute highway The Turnpike was Maine’s first roadway with a posted 60 mph speed limit. Few New Englanders in 1947 had ever driven that fast. • New England’s first and only the nation’s second superhighway The first section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, defined as a superhighway for its double two-lane limited access roadways separated by a wide median strip, opened in 1940. The Maine Turnpike was America’s second

modern superhighway. • America’s first toll highway to pay its own way The Maine Turnpike was financed completely with the issue of revenue bonds purchased by investors and repaid from toll collections. In seven decades, tolls have paid for all of the Turnpike’s maintenance and improvements without ever having to rely on state or federal funding. • America’s first asphalt superhighway

Some experts say that the Maine Turnpike was the first highway in the world to be built entirely with asphalt. Concrete was considered the only way to go before Maine’s superhighway set the new standard. The original smooth, straight stretch of roadway proved to be such a popular success, that in 1953 the Turnpike Authority sought to extend the pike northward. On December 13, 1956, the 66-mile, Portland-

...TURNPIKE from page 3 to-Gardiner extension, including the four-mile Falmouth spur, was added to the state’s transportation infrastructure. “With seventy years of history, more when you consider that the legislature created the Maine Turnpike Authority in 1941, it is important to remember the thousands of Maine people whose hard work is responsible for the Turnpike of today, said Maine Turnpike Authority Executive Director Peter Mills. “From the lawmakers who conceived the original idea to the investors who purchased the bonds to the engineers, contractors, and construction workers who designed and built the roadway and its bridges to the thousands of Maine Turnpike employees who have maintained and managed the roadway across seven decades—there have been so many involved who deserve our recognition and thanks, Mills added. Seventy years later, the Maine Turnpike continues to be a proving ground for new highway engineering, construction, and technological advancement. In recent years, the Maine Turnpike Authority has added Open Road Tolling systems that process electronic EZPass transactions as drivers cruise through at highway speeds. On-ramp and off-ramp

configurations have been upgraded with newer, safer designs. Last year, the Lewiston exit was rebuilt with the state’s first Single Point Urban Interchange, a design developed to move large volumes of traffic more safely and efficiently within a limited space. The Maine Turnpike Authority is a quasi-state agency created by the Maine Legislature in 1941. When the Maine Turnpike opened in 1947, it became the nation’s second superhighway and the very first to be funded exclusively through the sale of revenue bonds. While setting standards for maintenance and improvement, the Maine Turnpike continues to be a self-financed operation and does not receive funding from the state or the federal government. Because of its prominence and reputation, it has been designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The Maine Turnpike Authority thanks all motorists for their patience during Turnpike improvements, and as always, thank you for driving safely.

Holiday Scams on the Rise STATEWIDE With the holiday shopping season in full swing, be reminded that the holidays are rife with fraud and scams. Considering that many consumers remain unaware of some of these crimes, they may be regularly engaging in behaviors which put them at risk of being victimized by con artists. The AARP Fraud Watch Network, with free resources available to anyone of any age, offers tips and tools that can keep consumers safe from these crimes. “While most of us focus on family and friends during the holidays, fraudsters are zeroing in on our wallets and bank accounts, said Jane Margesson, AARP Maine Communications Director. “We’re encouraging consumers to elevate their awareness of some emerging and popular scams, and to also share the information with their families to help keep them safe this holiday season. Beware of deals: If you spot a “hot items at a huge discount, this could signal a problem. Be wary – especially with unfamiliar websites, links, or posts on social media. Carefully read reviews; search the retailer's name with 'scam'; and type in a retailer's website yourself instead of clicking on links in emails or texts. Shop safely online: Do not use public Wi-Fi to check sensitive financial information, or to make purchases using your credit card. In addition, always use a credit card (not your debit card) when making purchases – you are better protected. Skip the rack: Scammers have all sorts of tricks to grab gift card numbers and codes, and especially love when they are within easy reach on racks at See SCAM page 13...

~ News ~ Land Purchase for Town Hall and Conservation Preserve in Arundel ARUNDEL On December 5, the recently-formed Arundel Conservation Trust (ACT) and the Town of Arundel, after each conducting appropriate surveys and due diligence activities for over a year, purchased nearly 48-acres of land on Limerick Road, close to the center of town. The property will become the site of the proposed new Arundel Town Hall and entirely separately, the site of a new conservation preserve to be utilized by ACT for both walking and bike-riding trails and to also host future community events and activities. The Town of Arundel acquired the front ten (10) acres for $200,000 to support a planned new Town Hall and possibly other future municipal facilities, while the rear thirty-eight (38) acres, purchased for $175,000 by ACT, will become conservation land with walking and biking trails, Kennebunk River overlooks and safe parking for easy access to the Eastern Trail. ACT Member Jack Reetz remarked: This critical first step has been accomplished with such a spirit of mutual cooperation and future-thinking and that ACT looks forward to

working on more such community building projects with the Town. One critical transaction actually made this all possible however. Thanks to Arundel’s Phil Labbe (and his family), ACT has been granted a permanent easement across Labbe’s abutting property. This easement will provide the ACT and the community with permanent & safe access to both the Eastern Trail (ET) and the Kennebunk River. “Now the real work begins, commented Joan Hull, the ACT Chapter President. “ACT is a brand-new Conservation Trust and we need help from everyone in the Arundel community! We’ll be actively pursuing grants & fund raising and building our community membership. We hope to start laying out trails and constructing our trail system next spring. ACT is looking for volunteers to help us in everything we do, so please call or email and join us! For more information: 207-9673465, ext. 6 and leave a message; email: info@arundeltrust.org.

WEST KENNEBUNK “Hi guys, Big Mac here. I sure had a great time meeting so many of you at Jingle + Mingle on Saturday! You all were so complimentary of my costume, my good looks and my manners. It made my day (even though I thought I looked ridiculous!) When I got a chance to be with Santa, I told him that I am so thankful for all the kindness I’ve received at AWS. The staff and volunteers spend so much time with me, taking me on walks, playing with me and making me feel so loved. Santa told me that he hears a lot of holiday wishes

from people in the community. So many people are wishing that I have a home for the holidays! Can you believe it? Thank you to everyone who is helping me find my home. Thank you for sharing my goofy pictures and telling all your friends what a cool pooch I am. I know my family is coming along soon. Happy Holidays everyone and stay tuned for my next blog post, or should I say dog post? (Visit animalwelfaresociety.org for Big Mac's blog!) Looking for a last minute gift? Stop by the AWS Adoption Center. We have cards, ornaments, dog biscuits, collars and leashes, and other great stocking stuffers for the animal-lover in your life. We also have tribute gifts such as inscribed granite pavers and kennel sponsorships available.

Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS All the Safe Haven kitties wish you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas! We feel blessed that so many of our “guests have been adopted, and that our cupboard is more fully-stocked than it was a month ago. We’re grateful to everyone who has adopted or donated food and supplies. Some kitties have been waiting for years to be adopted. We take comfort that Safe Haven is such a homelike place to live - no cages! Each kitty’s personality is unique, but some just don’t make a great impression at adoption time. Others are just shy and lack the confidence to endear themselves to potential moms and dads. So allow me to introduce Ariel to you: Ariel actually has an abundance of confidence. She asserts herself in bossy ways around other cats. But she has Kitty A.D.D. and gets easily distracted. You could be petting Ariel and everything is great, then a sudden motion by

There’s nothing like routine and calm to bring out the best in kitties. They love your attention, and will put on quite a show when they know they’re all yours. We hope that Ariel will soon get a chance to live in a home to her own. Please consider her! All the kitties who reside

at Safe Haven’s adoption center have been granted a Christmas wish, a warm, safe, home. Our wish is for each of them to find a home with one of you, so they’ll have the best life has to offer. A real home is a treasured gift for a once-homeless, abused or neglected kitty. One person or a family is a feline’s greatest dream come true. Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK Tyler is a sweet, large, 5-yrold boy who came to us from a home filled with love but whose human sadly had to go into a nursing home and could no longer care for and spoil him. He initially arrived confused, scared and sorely missing his mum. With time and tons of love and attention showered on him by our incredible volunteers, Tyler has become one of our favorite ACAR kitties. He is a curious boy who can often be found in the sink where he enjoys drinking water directly from the faucet or curled up in a spot where he knows he will get belly rubs! He likes to play and boxes are his passion! Tyler is up-to-date on all vetting and does well with respectful children and with gradual introductions would be fine with one or two other kitties as well. Dogs are an unknown. Our kitties current wishlist is for Purina One dry food and Scoopable litter. Sign up for

our "Paws for a Cause" monthly donation program and give the commitment of $10or more if you can. Donations can either be sent via check to PO Box 552, North Berwick ME 03906.

...SCAM from page 8 at many large retailers. It is best to get your gift cards directly from the store they're from – and preferably from the store cashier. Ask them to scan the card to ensure it has the correct balance. Avoid the "package delivery" scam: The convenience of online shopping during the holiday season means you may have lots of packages arriving from different retailers. Scammers take advantage of the busy time by sending convincing phishing emails appearing to be from UPS, FedEx, and the USPS – click those links and you are led to phony sign-in pages asking for your personal information. Check the charity: Be very cautious of unsolicited phone calls, emails, and texts looking

for donations. And before donating to a charity, make sure you know exactly where your money will go – and how much will be going to administrative fees. Verify the organization through Giving.org and Charity Navigator. Thanks to a 2015 law, all Mainers (including minors) can place a freeze on their credit report with all three major credit bureaus for free. Because a credit freeze safeguards a person’s credit report, it is one of the most effective ways to protect consumers from identity theft. People and Business Profiles

Caron Manufacturing Receives Governor’s Award WELLS Governor Paul R. LePage recently presented six Maine companies with a 2017 Governor's Award for Business Excellence during a reception at the Blaine House in Augusta. Caron Engineering, based in Wells was one of the companies selected for the award. Back in 1986, Rob Caron started Caron Engineering in the basement of his home in Wells. Rob had worked in the computer numerical-control machine-tool industry for many years and realized there were few products on the market for monitoring the health of cutting tools-with most of them being inadequate for the task. Caron Engineering's first and most recognized product, TMAC (Tool Monitoring Adaptive Control) was released three years later. Caron Engineering develops advanced hardware and software solutions for more intelligent machining, focusing on unattended operation, machine process diagnostics, cycle time reduction and operator error elimination. The 27th annual awards, administered by the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development and sponsored by FairPoint Communications, recognize Maine businesses that

demonstrate a high level of commitment to their community, employees and excellence in manufacturing or service provision. "It's an honor to recognize these businesses, all of which represent the best of the best here in Maine," said Governor Paul R. LePage. "The businesses honored today are dedicated to quality workmanship, maintaining a loyal and dedicated workforce and giving back to the community. I thank each of them for doing business in our state and for serving as a great example for other Maine businesses." Since 1991, the Governor's Award for Business Excellence has been presented to 152 Maine businesses that go above and beyond normal day-to-day business operations. Previous recipients include Idexx Laboratories, L.L. Bean, GAC Chemical, Mathews Brothers, Jackson Lab and Moody's Collision Center. Others receiving the 2017 Governor's Award for Business Excellence in Maine: First National Bank of Bar Harbor and Damariscotta; Rockport Automotive, Inc., Knox County; International Grand Investment Corporation, Washington County; CRI-SIL Silicone Technologies, LLC, Biddeford; Vets First Choice, Portland.

YORK COUNTY This holiday, SIS Bank is giving the gift of humanity, compassion and goodwill to its loyal business customers by putting their names behind $1,250 worth of donations to area nonprofit organizations. York County Shelter Programs, Inc. (YCSP) and Gather are the local charities receiving the opportunity to pay forward the altruist act. With the bulk of SIS’s business customers centered in Southern Maine, the Bank made a $1,000 donation to York County Shelter, based in Alfred, and a $250 contribution to Gather, the former Seacoast

Lasagna Dinner to benefit the York Food Pantry. The event raised $812, collecting bags and boxes of non-perishables. Special thanks to the Knitting Group at The Yarn Sellar, who

Stonewall Kitchen to Acquire Tillen Farms® Brand Premium Cocktail Garnishes

Food Pantry Raises over $800

YORK Many thanks to all of the family, friends, colleagues, and community that came out in the bitter cold to support the first CENTURY 21 Atlantic Realty

Family Food Pantry in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where SIS also has a branch. YCSP helps community members reach their fullest potential by providing access to various levels of housing, personal growth opportunities and community resources such as vocational training, case management, food pantry, meals kitchens, medical and legal assistance, mental health and substance abuse treatment. Gather serves those in the community experiencing hunger by providing nourishing food through innovative distribution programs, nutrition education and an acces-

donated a big box of scarves. Also, appreciation goes out to Rick’s Restaurant for co-sponsoring the event. Thank you to everyone that volunteered their time to make it a success.

Local News

YORK Stonewall Kitchen, a leading specialty food manufacturer, marketer and retailer, announced today that it has entered into an agreement to acquire the Tillen Farms® brand of premium cocktail garnishes, including uniquely-crisp pickled vegetables and delicious Pacific Northwest cherries. The transaction is anticipated to be completed in January 2018. John Stiker, Chief Executive Officer of Stonewall Kitchen said, “We have long admired the premium quality and variety of Tillen Farms’ delicious products, from their pickled asparagus spears and dilly beans to their signature Bada Bing® cherries. The product line is completely complementary to the specialty food categories we currently offer, and provides us with an immediate leadership presence in the cocktail garnish category. We also see great synergies between these two specialty food brands, from innovative product development to expanded distribution, and we are excited about the opportunity to grow Tillen Farms alongside Stonewall Kitchen.” Added Tim Metzger, the Founder and Owner of Tillen

Local Sports

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Tips and Etiquette When Attending the Theater The bright lights of the dramatic stage beckon not just actors, but also the audience members who fill the seats. A night at the theater makes for an entertaining night out for couples, friends or family who enjoy and appreciate live performances. According to a 2016 survey by Nielsen Scarborough, more than 47 million Americans had attended a live theater event within the past month, and around 18.1 million people had seen a symphony concert or an opera performance in person. The famed Broadway theater district in New York City is central to the theater industry in the United States, but touring productions visit theaters across the country. Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, and Minneapolis are just a few of the many cities that boast thriving live theater attendance, while Toronto and Niagara-on-the-Lake

are meccas for Canadian theater audiences. Attending theater is not like going to the movies at a nearby cinema. Show tickets cost an average of $103 apiece, according to Statistica. Live theater is an experience to behold, and adhering to live theater etiquette while also taking a few tips into consideration can further enhance the experience for all theatergoers. • Reserve early. Many popular shows sell out quickly, particularly if a notable actor is in the cast. Shop several months in

advance to secure seats to popular and/or critically acclaimed productions. • Dress up. Although many theaters do not have dress codes, audience members often treat the theater as a special evening. Dress more formally than you might for another occasion, but keep comfort in mind as well. • Arrive well before showtime. If you are picking up tickets at the will call window, a good rule of thumb is to arrive 45 minutes before the curtain comes up. The house typically opens 30 minutes before curtain time, but lines can be very long at will call windows prior to the show. If you get to your seat early, use this as an opportunity to visit the often small restrooms, which will likely be packed at intermission. • Put away phones. Many theaters do not allow photos or videos of live performances. Also, resist the urge to text or update social media during the show. Even a dimmed cell phone screen can be a distraction to others in a dark theater. • Stash tissues and opened cough drops. In advance of showtime, be sure to unwrap tissues or cough drops/sucking candies

so that coughing or sneezing fits can be tamed without being overly distracting to fellow audience members. • Exercise discretion with kids. Some shows are tailor-made for kids, while others may not be. Ask yourself if your child is capable of sitting through a two-plus hour show without getting bored? If so, bring them along and let

them see the arts in person. Attending live theater is an entertaining pastime that attracts people of all ages. Adhering to certain etiquette and heeding some helpful advice can make a trip to the theater that much more enjoyable. $250,000 Grant Received for Hope Woods Conservation Initiative KENNEBUNK – Friends of Hope Cemetery & Woods has received approval for a $250,000 grant from the publicly funded Land for Maine’s Future program toward purchase of a conservation easement on Hope Woods, 75-acres of undeveloped land in the heart of Kennebunk Village. Hope Woods is owned by the Hope Cemetery Corporation. It abuts the Town of Kennebunk’s Wiggins Pond preserve, and contains a series of meandering trails that cross both properties. Hope Woods contains deep mature woods, open meadows, and diverse wildlife habitat, abutting an historic ice pond and 200+ yearold graceful cemetery. It is an outstanding destination for hiking, biking, nature observation, and

reflection. Hope Cemetery has long encouraged public use of Hope Woods. The significant cost of providing ongoing care and maintenance of Historic Hope Cemetery has necessitated the sale of an easement on Hope Woods. “Hope Woods has served as a peaceful enhancement to Hope Cemetery for more than two centuries. Betsy T. Stevens, Hope Cemetery Corporation Board President shared. “We want nothing more than to see it preserved and enjoyed by the Kennebunk community for generations to come. Friends of Hope Cemetery & Woods (FHCW) is leading the Hope Woods Conservation Initiative, in partnership with Kennebunk Land Trust (KLT), to

secure permanent conservation of Hope Woods. George C. Harrington, Friends of Hope Cemetery and Woods Board President shared an overview of the vision for Hope Woods “In addition to the purchase of a conservation easement, the initiative will raise funds to improve and maintain the Hope Woods trail system, including the construction of a universally accessible trail and improved bridge systems to protect vernal pools and prevent erosion. Kennebunk Land Trust and Hope Cemetery Corporation are developing a conservation easement, that will be held and monitored by KLT, to prevent future development and protect wildlife habitat in Hope Woods. “KLT looks forward to joining many others in our community to achieve our shared goal of preSee HOPE page 19...

~ Ask The Computer Lady~ Dear Computer Lady, Love your newsletter, full of so many answers I have questions to. My question is, how do I make a gmail desktop icon, so I can go to gmail quickly? Thank you, Daisy Dear Daisy, How you make a desktop icon for quick access to Gmail depends on what browser program you are using to access the Gmail website. If you are using Internet Explorer, 1. Go to your gmail web page. 2. Right-click on a blank spot of the page. 3. In the context menu that appears, click on "Create Shortcut" 4. In the dialog box that appears, click the "Yes" button. If you are using Firefox or Chrome, 1. Go to your gmail web page. 2. Using your mouse, click on the small lock at the beginning of the address bar. 3. Drag that lock from the address bar to your desktop, and it will automatically create a shortcut to that web page. If you are using Edge, there is not an easy way to create a shortcut to a webpage, but you can still do it following these directions: 1. Copy or write down the web address (URL) for your gmail page. It will be something like https://mail.google.com 2.

Right-click on a blank spot on your desktop. 3. In the context menu that appears, point to "New" and then click on "Shortcut". 4. In the shortcut dialog either type or paste your URL and click "Next" 5. Type a name for your shortcut and click "Finish". Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I recently got Windows 10. One night this week the clock reset itself up one hour. Is there anyway to reset the clock in the bottom right hand corner to the correct time. When I go to the time and click over it I get a planning calendar. Thanks in advance from John down in Georgia. Dear John, It sounds like your computer might be set for the wrong time zone. Here is how you can check for and fix it. 1. Point to the time on your taskbar and right-click on it. 2. In the context menu that appears, click on "Adjust date/time". 3. In the date and time settings window, you can make several changes. A. Make sure you have the right time zone selected. B. You can turn off "Set time automatically" and set it yourself. C. You can turn off the setting to adjust for daylight

saving time automatically and set it yourself. Hopefully one of these options will fix your problem. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, How would I know if my laptop computer has been compromised by a Zeus virus? I had a pop up appear last night with a phone number to call and a code # with Microsoft screen in background. The person on the other end identified himself as a Microsoft employee. He accessed my computer and showed me that my firewall was not working strong enough and that my IPE had been established in foreign countries. He wanted me to purchase(supposedly) Microsoft virus protection. I didn't give out any credit card info. but asked him to send an email with plan prices and I would decide later. I never received the email. I have Norton 360 Premier security protection currently. Should I have my computer checked out? Does Microsoft try to sell their virus protection plans in this manner? Thank you, Philana Dear Philana, It appears that you have been the victim of a scam, and not a virus. There is a fairly common scam going around that displays a screen saying "Windows Detected ZEUS

COMPUTER PRO All the help you need with

Virus". The pop-up displays phone numbers for you to call, but you will not be talking to Microsoft, you will be talking to a scammer who will try to get you to allow him to control your computer so he can make you think your computer is infected and steal your credit card information. Anything that the scammer told you about your firewall, IPE or infections is just a bunch of lies meant to scare you into giving him your money. Yes, you should have your computer checked out to make sure the scammer didn't leave any unwanted programs on your computer. You don't want your computer sending the scammers your passwords or other information. No, Microsoft does not sell virus protection plans in this manner, when you get a pop-up saying to call a number for Microsoft support, IT IS ALWAYS A SCAM! Sometimes, when a victim refuses to give over their credit card information, they will put a password lock on your computer, and you won't be able to get back in. It is good that you didn't give out your credit card information, and I hope that the scammer didn't do any damage while he had control of your computer. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady.

I am an artist and want to send photos to someone who is running an art exhibit. My jpeg photos can be no larger than 2 MB. All of the jpeg photos on my computer of my art are larger than that. I understand there is a way to compress them but I don't know how. My operating system is windows 7. Can you help please, Thanks Margaret Dear Margaret, What you need is an image program that can resize or resample your images. Make sure you save a copy of your photo in the smaller size as you don't want to lose the clarity and details in the original. My preferred program for resizing is Irfanview at: www. irfanview.com/. Once you have downloaded and installed Irfanview, start the program, and click "File" then "Open" to find your photo and open it. To resize your photo, click on "Image" in the menu bar, then click on "Resize/Resample". This will open a dialog box where you can set the new size you want your picture to be. Make sure there is a check mark in front of "Preserve aspect ratio" then change the larger dimension. The smaller dimension will automatically resize as well. If I am trying to quickly reduce the size of a picture, I will simply click on the "Half" button once or twice and then save it as a new image. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Medicare and Medicaid to Provide a Special Enrollment Period for Mainers Affected By Storm STATEWIDE Recently, Senator Angus King (I-Maine) received a response to his November letter to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, in which he urged CMS Administrator Seema Verma to extend the 2018 Affordable Care Act Open Enrollment Period for Maine following the severe storm that caused more than

400,000 Maine people to lose power. In the letter, Administrator Verma agrees that “individuals who were unable to enroll in coverage due to the impacts of the severe wind-storms and resulting power outages across Maine, should qualify for an exceptional circumstances [special enrollment period]. The letter does not describe the criteria for attributing the inability to enroll

to the wind storm, and does not define how much longer affected Maine people will have to enroll. “First and foremost: if you are a Maine resident who has yet to enroll in the 2018 Open Enrollment Period, it’s not too late to sign up today, Senator King said. “I know this posed a challenge for many in Maine: With an already shortened Open Enrollment Period, October’s

letter does leave several questions open: notably what information is required to qualify, how the determination will be made, and how long the special enrollment periods will be available. Regardless of this possible option, I once again urge the people of Maine to secure coverage for 2018 before today’s deadline. Administrator Verma’s letter comes on the final day of the 2018 Open Enrollment Period. Per the letter, any resident of Maine who has not secured coverage by the end of the Open Enrollment Period and was affected by the storm should contact the Marketplace Call Center at 1-800-318-2596 to speak with a Marketplace representative. Additional information related to natural disasters is available on HealthCare.gov at www. healthcare.gov.

storm and the resulting power outages that affected hundreds of thousands in Maine caused a large number of people to lose valuable days that could have been used to explore the different plans available and secure healthcare coverage for 2018. While I’m pleased CMS will consider special enrollment periods for those affected by the storm, Administrator Verma’s

3 Ways Stress Can Steal Your Health – and Your Holiday Joy Stress doesn’t take holidays off. In fact, the opposite is often true: Stress saps the joy out of the season for many people. Stress is manifest in many forms of poor health or bad lifestyle habits during the holidays, when people typically put a long list of errands, shopping, baking and parties ahead of being good to their own bodies. They might get sick as a result – or expedite a path to long-term health problems. “Stress is often more pronounced during the holiday season, and the effects it can have on our health are widespread and potentially very damaging,â€? says Dr. Sanda Moldovan, a board-certified periodontist and nutritionist with practices in Beverly Hills and Manhattan, and author of the upcoming book “Heal Up!: How to Repair, Rebuild and Renew Naturally.â€? “The holidays are such a hectic time, and people need to slow down a bit, realize how susceptible they are to all kinds of problems, and what they can do to avoid them.â€? Moldovan lists different ways stress materializes and how to avoid or lessen the associated problems: • Teeth grinding. Also called bruxism, this can cause

cracks in the teeth that can lead to tooth loss. Teeth grinding also causes wear, which can collapse the bite and cause pain in the jaw. Cutting back on certain foods and drinks that contain caffeine – colas, coffee, sweets – can help stop teeth grinding. For persistent grinders, two things that help, Moldovan says, are a custom-made mouth guard and mouth yoga. “Take the time to stretch your jaw muscles in the morning,â€? Moldovan says. “Five minutes go a long way. Open your mouth wide and massage the sides of your jaw.â€? • Migraines. Migraine sufferers really have to watch it during the holidays, Moldovan says. Triggers include processed and fried meats, too much caffeine or alcohol, and chocolate. “Lack of sleep and lessened physical activity are also culprits,â€? Moldovan says. “Six to eight hours of quality sleep is recommended to help prevent headaches, but so many people run themselves ragged until late during the holidays. And too many people stop exercising. Being sedentary invites problems.â€? • Overeating/poor nutrition. Stress often manifests in folks stuffing themselves, relying on comfort foods or holiday junk. “It’s easy to say, ‘Well, everyone overeats during the

holidays and consumes lots of sugar,’ Moldovan says. “But that doesn’t have to be you. Don’t let the holidays be a food free-for-all. Overindulging adds to stress and can bring all sorts of health issues. Among them: obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and dental woes such as periodontitis, cavities and oral

ulcer. “People are overfed and undernourished and this wreaks havoc on their bodies inside and out, Moldovan says. “It also leads to accelerated aging and a lesser-performing immune system. “Too many people let the See STRESS page 37...

62,085 Estimated Firefighter Injuries Lowest Rate since 1981 NFPA Analysis NATIONWIDE The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) released the latest edition of its “U.S. Firefighter Injuries report, which highlights data on injuries sustained by firefighters on duty in 2016. The statistics were collected from fire departments responding to NFPA’s annual U.S. Fire Experience survey. There were 62,085 U.S. firefighter injuries in 2016, reflecting an 8.8 percent decrease from 2015, making this the lowest rate of injury since 1981, when NFPA began analyzing firefighter injury data. Of those injuries, 19,050 (30.6

percent) resulted in lost time. The leading injury types in 2016 were: Strains, sprains and/or muscular pains (52.6 percent), and wounds, cuts, bleeding, and bruising (15.2 percent) Firefighters were more likely to be injured on the fireground resulting in 24,325 (39.2 percent) of the firefighter injuries. The leading cause of injury during fireground operations was overexertion and strain (27.1 percent). Injuries also occurred off the fireground. Other types of duty that resulted in firefighter injury were: Non-fire emergency incidents (20.6 percent);

Other on-duty activities (18.2 percent); Training activities (13.7 percent). While responding to or returning from an incident an estimated 15,425 collisions occurred involving fire department emergency vehicles resulting in 700 firefighter injuries (8.4 percent). There were also 9,275 documented exposures to infectious diseases (e.g., hepatitis, meningitis, and HIV) in 2016, along with an estimated 36,475 documented exposures to hazardous conditions (e.g., asbestos, chemicals, fumes, and radioactive materials). 3 Ways to Help a Loved One Receive Proper Nursing Home Care It’s an almost weekly occurrence across the country. Nursing homes face lawsuits over patients who develop severe bedsores that in some cases lead to death. One week it’s a now-closed nursing home in California dealing with its third such lawsuit. Another week it’s a New Jersey nursing home sued by the family of a woman who died after reportedly suffering from a bedsore that wasn’t properly monitored and cared for. For families, such situations lead to heartache and tragedy. For the nursing homes, they lead to costly litigation and damaged reputations. They also raise questions about what family members can do if they suspect a nursing home resident isn’t receiving proper care or is in danger. Part of the answer, patient advocates say, is to understand the kinds of problems that might crop up and be on the lookout for signs during visits. For example, one reason many residents develop pressure ulcers, commonly known as bedsores, is that they wet themselves and must wait for someone on staff to change them. If there’s a delay, what begins as a minor rash can

become severe. “It’s a serious concern for nursing home residents, says Nigel Parker, founder and CEO of RashEndZ Inc., a company that developed a skin-aeration liner for incontinence garments that prevents and treats those rashes. Just how serious? Pressure ulcers affect up to 2.5 million patients annually, according to the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research. Complications include pain, scarring, infection, prolonged rehabilitation, and permanent disability. About 60,000 patients die as a direct result of pressure ulcers each year. “The patient’s well being is the primary reason this needs to be addressed, Parker says. “But if that’s not incentive enough for health-care providers, pressure ulcers also result in 17,000 lawsuits a year, so nursing homes and other health facilities are risk liability if they don’t handle the problem. Although the residents’ care is the nursing home staff’s responsibility, friends and relatives should do their part to make sure proper care

is happening, Parker says. The National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care, a patient advocacy group, offers a few suggestions on monitoring and reporting problems: Make unannounced visits. Visits are an important time to look for changes in your loved one’s health and mental status, but those visits don’t need to be predictable. Vary the times and days you visit to see the care your loved one receives when no one expects you. Don’t delay in reporting problems. Document and report concerns and problems to staff members directly involved as soon as they arise. If nothing changes, report your concern to staff supervisors in writing and in a meeting. Seek outside help. If the facility fails to address your concern, you might want to seek a third party’s assistance. Contact your local ombudsman, who advocates for nursing home residents. You can find an ombudsman at www. ltcombudsman.org.

“It’s critical that family members educate themselves about the issues that occur in nursing homes or other health facilities,” Parker says. “It so often falls to each individual to act as their loved one’s advocate.” Nigel Parker, founder and CEO of RashEndZ Inc. (www. RashEndZ.com), is a senior management and systems engineer professional with more than 25 years experience in aerospace, medical simulation and other high-tech industries. While working at Honeywell from 1984 to 2001, he worked on the space shuttle, military aircraft and commercial aircraft, among other projects. Parker is the inventor of REZair, a skinaeration liner that can be inserted inside a diaper, incontinence garment or wound dressing. The liner connects to any air/ oxygen source and circulates air or oxygen on rashes, helping to keep the skin dry and speed healing. serving Hope Woods.” Gordon Collins, Executive Director, Kennebunk Land Trust recently told a gathering of KLT supporters, “We are proud to be a part of this great project. “ The Kennebunk Land Trust was founded in 1972 to preserve and protect significant natural spaces in the Kennebunk/Arundel Region. As one of southern Maine’s oldest working land trusts, KLT has preserved over 3,400 acres of forest, fields, and waterways, including 1,600 acres of the Kennebunk Plains. Of these preserved lands, more than 300 acres are conservation easements managed for private landowners. Hope Woods aims to benefit the Kennebunk community and is attracting wide support. Michael Pardue, Kennebunk Town Manager recently spoke of the tremendous public value of Hope Woods, “The Town of Kennebunk welcomes the opportunity to work cooperatively on a planning initiative aimed at securing the future of these open space lands and exploring new ways that they can benefit the

public.” Robert Metcalf, Chair of the Town of Kennebunk Comprehensive Planning Committee, described the area as “a jewel hidden in the middle of downtown Kennebunk,” and stated that “sustaining it long into the future as a public asset is very important to the community.” (Photo from hopecemeterykennebunk.com)

5 Tips To Help End Your Spouse’s Snoring If your spouse snores, you may have just endured another sleepless night. But it doesn’t have to be that way. There are steps you can take – or at least have your spouse take – that could end the snoring and perhaps even save your spouse’s life in the process. “A lot of people think of snoring as something that’s just annoying because, with couples, it can cause the nonsnorer to lose sleep, says Dr. Gene Sambataro, DDS, author of the book Stop the Snore: Dental Solutions for Healthy Sleep. “But it’s also possible that

something serious is going on. When someone snores, it means that for some reason their breathing is being obstructed while they sleep. So if your spouse snores it’s important to let them know, not just to complain about your sleepless night, but because their health may depend on it.â€? Dr. Sambataro’s suggestions to help your spouse end the snoring include: • Get tested for sleep apnea. The National Sleep Foundation reports that about 18 million American adults suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, which can be a dangerous condition. “People have literally choked to death or died in their sleep

because of sleep apnea,â€? Sambataro says. If a patient has sleep apnea, one potential solution is an oral appliance that a dentist can provide. But many people never even know they need to take care of the problem because it’s estimated that about 90 percent of obstructive sleep apnea cases are undiagnosed, according to a report from the National Institutes of Health. • Change sleeping positions. “Sleeping on your back will increase snoring and, in addition, worsen your sleep apnea if you have that,â€? Sambataro says. Try sleeping on your side instead. • Watch your weight. Yes, extra weight can lead to snoring. Weight gain can cause a person to develop a thicker neck, which contributes to a narrowing of the airway. That narrowed airway can cause snoring as well as wake the person up several times a night as the tongue obstructs the airflow, Sambataro says. Also, obstructive sleeps apnea itself can lead to weight gain, he says. • Practice good sleep hygiene. You might expect a dentist to talk about oral hygiene, but sleep hygiene isn’t a phrase that typically comes up for most people. “Sleep hygiene is really about getting better sleep by

creating a welcoming environment in which to sleep, and then by having habits throughout the day and evening that prepare your mind and body for a peaceful night’s sleep,â€? Sambataro says. Poor sleep habits, such as staying up too late, can lead to more snoring. • Dust. It may be time to clean house – or at least the bedroom. Not only will you get rid of clutter, you could get rid of snoring. Sometimes people have trouble breathing through their nose because of an allergy, and so when they sleep they breathe through their mouth and they snore. The culprit behind the allergy could be dust, which collects on books, papers and other items. “When it comes to health, there’s a tremendous amount of information out there about good nutrition and exercise, but for some reason sleep and snor-

Health Sayings and Their Origins Language is shaped by many different influences. Over time, certain phrases become part of the vernacular and are spoken to signify how one acts or feels, including phrases about health and wellbeing. Some phrases may inspire curiosity as to their origins. The following health-related phrases have some interesting backstories. “Fit as a Fiddle The phrase “fit as a fiddle is often used to describe someone who is very healthy and full of energy. But what does fitness have to do with an instrument, anyway? Actually, very little. According to The Phrase Finder, “fit didn’t originally mean healthy. It was actually used to represent the words “suitable and seemly. Therefore, something that is fit as a fiddle would mean it was suitable for its purpose. Now “fit frequently refers to one’s physical shape, and the phrase has evolved.

Care in the comfort of home “Home takes on greater meaning for patients as the holidays unfold. Receiving care at home is more personal and allows patients to participate in holiday traditions while receiving the most advanced end-of-life care available. We never waver in our commitment to care, in the comfort of home. Extending warm holiday wishes to you and those you hold dear.

ing get overlooked, Sambataro says. “It’s important, though, for anyone who snores to get evaluated by a qualified professional. Also, anyone who knows someone who snores should urge that person to get checked because there’s a good chance they don’t even realize they snore. Gene A. Sambataro, DDS, FAGD, (www.juliandentist.com/Ellicott-CitySleep-Apnea.asp) has been a leader in the field of dentistry for more than 35 years. He is the director and clinician at the Julian Center for Comprehensive Dentistry, where he and his team treat sleep-disordered breathing issues, like sleep apnea. He is also the author of Stop the Snore: Dental Solutions for Healthy Sleep. The Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third party articles.

“Survival of the fittest Again, the word “fittest initially did not represent physical strength or well-being. Rather, in this phrase, attributed to Herbert Spencer and later to Charles Darwin, fittest referred to those who were best suited to their environment, or more plainly, those who were best able to survive. Today, it

can mean anyone who is able to rise above the odds against them or beat the competition. “Strong as an ox The idiom “strong as an ox has long represented a person who is unusually strong and able to persevere. Because oxen are large beasts of burden that were used instead of horses by American settlers before railroads were created, anyone compared to an ox would have to be someone capable of strong physical labor and ability. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away Many believe this phrase to be a helpful rhyming device to remember to eat healthy food to maintain good physical health. However, according to Snopes, the first known version of this proverb comes from Wales in 1866 and stated, “eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread. Other sources trace the phrase to ancient Rome. Apples can have many health benefits, but no research has confirmed that eating an apple daily will safeguard individuals from any particular illness. A 2015 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine did find that people who ate an apple required fewer prescription medications than those who did not. BUSINESS & FINANCE How To Decide Who Merits Your Money

Not long ago, Jeff Bezos took to Twitter to ask the world for charitable-giving ideas. The Amazon.com founder sought a charitable strategy that looked at the long term and soon he was inundated with suggestions. Of course, Bezos has plenty of money to give, but you don’t need to be a billionaire to reach a point in life when you start feeling the charitable urge. "There comes a time when many of us want to do more than just accumulate money and property," says Patrick Renn, a financial professional and author of the bestselling book, “Finding Your Money’s Greater Purpose. "You want to distribute the bounty. You want to enjoy what you worked to acquire, of course, but part of the change in attitude is looking to see how you can do more than just take care of yourself." But who should your wealth – whether abundant or meager – go to? Should all of it be kept in the family when you

die? Should it go to your church? A favorite charity? The college that educated you? Ultimately, only each individual can answer that question, Renn says. But there are steps that can help you prepare for making that decision. They include: Be aware that circumstances change. When you die, whatever you accumulated can end up in the hands of family, other beneficiaries, charities – or Uncle Sam. "A lot of people I talk to think they have it all worked out and that the IRS is going to get nothing," Renn says. "But often, when I examine their documents and analyze the numbers, I discover that’s not true. It’s not always because they did a bad job. More than likely, it’s because tax laws changed since they did their calculations, or something about their personal situation changed." Realize that fair doesn’t always mean equal. People often divide an inheritance into equal shares. If there are three children, for example, then each

gets one-third. Renn says people should sometimes reconsider the automatic urge to do that. For example, both children may be hard working, but one might be well off financially while the other is struggling to make ends meet. One sibling might be more adept at handling money, while the other will quickly blow any inheritance. Understand that even small gifts can help. Many people think that leaving something to charity is for the very rich only. But Renn says anyone, regardless of net worth, can find something they care about and include that charity, organization or cause as part of their legacy. A financial professional might even be able to help you leverage your resources so that your gift accomplishes more than you would have imagined. "We can contribute to the greater good with our time, our efforts and our money," Renn says. "In giving financially, we are, in effect, giving all three, since money represents the fruit of our time and effort. When we share our money, we

Considering Personal Bankruptcy? For people struggling under a mountain of debt, bankruptcy may seem like an opportunity for a fresh start. However, few understand what it really means to declare bankruptcy, or the long-term repercussions. “Bankruptcy should be the last possible option, said Michael Sullivan, a personal finance consultant with Take Charge America, a national nonprofit credit counseling and debt management agency. “The financial and credit implications are considerable, so it’s best to exhaust all other options first. Sullivan offers five points to consider before pursuing bankruptcy: It kills your credit. Nothing has a more negative impact on your long-term credit than bankruptcy, which stays on your credit report for seven to 10 years, making it difficult if not impossible to qualify for an auto loan on reasonable terms or for a mortgage. You may have trouble renting an apartment or getting a job since credit is often a reference point for landlords and employers. It’s complicated and

costly. It’s not easy to file bankruptcy. First, you have to determine whether you’re filing for Chapter 7, Chapter 11 or Chapter 13. Then, the federal government requires a Pre-Filing Bankruptcy Credit Counseling certificate from an approved credit counseling agency, and a course in financial management prior to discharging any debts. After you file, you must obtain a PostFiling Bankruptcy Debtor Education certificate. You’re also on the hook for filing fees and any attorney expenses for completing the bankruptcy process. It doesn’t clear all debt.

Many believe that filing bankruptcy will give them a fresh, debt-free start, but that’s not the case. Student loans cannot be discharged in bankruptcy, and neither can child support, alimony, criminal restitution or debts resulting from fraud. You may have alternatives. Two of your other options could include debt settlement or debt management. Debt settlement has a downside. It seems like a smart alternative to bankruptcy, but there’s an ugly side to debt set-

share ourselves." Patrick Renn, author of Finding Your Money’s Greater Purpose, has been a Certified Financialll Planner for more than 35 years and holds a bachelor’s degree from in business administration from Villanova University and an MBA from Loyola College. BUSINESS & FINANCE MCCS to Train New Workers for Positions at General Dynamics Bath Iron Works

STATEWIDE The Maine Community College System (MCCS) will partner with General Dynamics Bath Iron Works (BIW) to deliver technical training to up to 90 trainees, providing BIW the skilled workers it needs to help fill hundreds of critical jobs. The new training, a partnership between the MCCS Maine Quality Centers program, Southern Maine Community College (SMCC), and BIW will provide training for up to 60 manufacturing technicians and up to 30 welders. Participants who successfully complete the training will then be interviewed for positions at BIW. Those who are hired will receive additional, job-specific training in the shipyard’s Trades Learning Center. Bath Iron Works, a business unit of General Dynamics, is among the largest private employers in Maine with about 5,700 employees. With many of its most experienced workers nearing retirement, BIW needs more employees who are trained in specific skills in demand at the shipyard. The company’s training partnerships with SMCC and other Maine community colleges have played a vital role in addressing its workforce needs. “Our training partnership with BIW helps the company address its ongoing need for skilled workers and helps prepare more Maine people

for high-paying careers, said MCCS President Derek Langhauser. “This is an excellent example of the kinds of workforce training that Maine’s community colleges are providing across the state to help businesses build a skilled workforce and a stronger Maine economy. The training is scheduled to begin in January and take place at SMCC’s Midcoast Campus in Brunswick. The training in-

cludes: Welding. SMCC will offer a 120-hour class covering welding fundamentals and safety to three groups of up to 10 trainees per group. Manufacturing Technician. SMCC will offer a 120hour technology training program to three groups of 15 to 20 trainees in each group. The training serves as an introduction to shipfitting, pipefitting

and general laborer trades and covers topics from blueprint reading and power tool operation to tool safety and math. SMCC’s Workforce Development Department will oversee the training. Last year, the college provided customized skills training to more than 1,350 Maine workers. The Maine Quality Centers is part of the Maine Community College System and pro-

$373,170 Awarded to Protect Maine Wetlands STATEWIDE The Maine Department of Environmental Protection Biological Monitoring Program was awarded $174,597 for using wetland biomonitoring results to support agency decisionmaking. The biological monitoring program proposes to develop and refine the State’s wetland program in accordance with the Maine Wetland Program Plan. The overall goal of this project is to improve the ability of water quality protection agencies and programs to access and use biological monitoring and assessment results to inform regulatory and management decisions. Major components of the project include: 1) Developing and refining numeric aquatic life use criteria, including com-

forested wetlands and aquatic macrophytes, 4) Refining the process and criteria for identifying high quality reference (minimally-disturbed) wetlands throughout the state for use in a long-term monitoring network and 5) Identifying appropriate restoration/mitigation/protection sites to evaluate based on state aquatic life use criteria. In fact, that may be true for most of them. The Gallup organization, which regularly measures employee engagement across the country, reports that just 32 percent of employees say they are enthusiastic about and committed to their work and workplace. It doesn’t have to be that way, though, says Kerry Alison Wekelo, author of “Culture Infusion: 9 Principles to Create

and Maintain a Thriving Organizational Culture. With the right approach, she says, business leaders can improve their corporate culture and motivate employees to perform at their highest capacity. “Successful leaders are the ones who intentionally use their behavior as a positive example, Wekelo says. “If you expect employees to work overtime for important deadlines, for example,

they are much more inclined to do their best if you also stay and work the overtime.â€? To really get those employees engaged, a leader also must commit to supporting the growth of people and not just systems, products or processes, says Wekelo, who is managing director of human resources and operations for Actualize Consulting. Here are four ways she says leaders can do that: • Insist on a healthy work/life balance. Work and home used to have clearer boundaries, but these days work is always a mouse click or text message away. That can make it tough for both employees and corporate leaders to balance their lives, but Wekelo insists it’s important that they do. “When your life is well balanced, you will be more satisfied, more motivated, happier and healthier.â€? Baking Shortcuts For Time-Pressed Entertainers

‘Tis the season for baking cookies, cakes and other treats. However, during the holiday rush, it’s easy to get sidetracked or tired, and perhaps even a little bit overwhelmed by all the things to do in such a short period of time. Holiday baking doesn’t have to add to seasonal stress. With these tips and shortcuts, there will be plenty of sweet treats for the family. Stick with tested recipes Although holiday bakers may want to branch out a bit

with their culinary creativity, recipes that have previously been prepared with great success can take some of the work out of holiday baking. Preparing recipes you recall preparing in the past is much easier than trying something new. If you’d like, add sparkle to old standards, such as decorating oatmeal or chocolate chip cookies with colored sprinkles. Cookies are fast-baking Did you know that cookies were originally made to test oven temperatures? Culinary

historians say that cookies were first made to test if an oven was hot enough to bake other goods. Today, cookies can be whipped up in mere minutes. Make a batch of dough and then freeze or refrigerate it, thawing it when the time comes to bake. Also, think about baking one day and decorating the next if pressed for time. Embrace colored candy melts Icing can be tricky to master. Simply heating colored candy melts and pouring over cakes or painting onto cookies

can add festive appeal to desserts. Candy melts even come in many different colors and can be combined to achieve the tint desired. Keep ingredients in top form Don’t let poorly performing ingredients or a lack of supplies be your undoing. Butter can be softened quickly in the microwave when needed for recipes. Eggs can be brought to room temperature by allowing them to sit in a bowl of warm water. Ensure that brown sugar stays soft by putting a piece of sliced bread in the container. Don’t forget to stock up on other baking staples, such as vanilla and almond extracts, baking powder/soda, molasses, and confectioner’s sugar. Don’t bake from scratch Not all recipes need to be made from scratch. Boxed cake mixes can be embellished and turned into delicious desserts without much fuss. Substitute

melted butter for oil, buttermilk for water, and add an extra egg for a rich cake. Mix in chocolate chips or nuts or experiment with garnishes for a festive look. Parchment paper is key Line cookie sheets or cake pans with parchment paper for easy dessert release and quick cleanup. Parchment paper and even foil can help lift cakes or cookie bars out of pans so they look neat and do not stick. Holiday baking can be made much easier by employing a few tricks of the trade. The Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.

Weekly Recipe: Homemade Apple Sauce Ingredients: Roughly 5 pounds apples: 1/3 McIntosh, 1/3 Cortland, and 1/3 Red or Golden Delicious. If you prefer other varieties, use what you enjoy eating, as long as they are cooking apples. 1 cup of water 1 cup of granulated sugar 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract 3 Tablespoons of Lemon juice

Directions: 1} Peel, core, and thinly slice apples. 2} Place cut up apples in a medium size pot with cover and add water. Bring to a boil and reduce the heat. Simmer uncovered and stir occasionally, until

apples are soft, about 10 to 15 minutes. 3} Break up the soft apples in the pot with a potato masher if you want your applesauce chunky, or use an emersion beater or food mixer to the texture you desire for smooth apple sauce. 4} Add sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice and vanilla extract to the mixture and bring to a boil again for 1 minute. Let cool or refrigerate until you’re ready to serve. 5} If you’re planning to freeze the apple sauce, put the sugar in it but “do not add the other ingredients as they will lose their flavor when frozen. Add them when you’re ready to serve, mix well and enjoy!

Anita Serven Engle, 94 KENNEBUNK – Anita Serven Engle, 94, died November 16, 2017, peacefully, with loved ones by her side in Kennebunk. She was born April 29, 1923, in Ramsey, NJ. There, she grew up on a poultry farm where she enjoyed horseback riding (her birthday gift at 90 was a ride!), met her loving husband Philip, had two daughters and lived happily. Upon retirement in 1982, she and Philip moved to Conway, NH, where they enjoyed skiing, gardening and fishing. They rescued greyhounds, and loved all dogs and animals (at 91, she got to enjoy staying at the Disney Animal Kingdom Lodge!). Anita volunteered at the local animal shelter for years and at Memorial Hospital in North Conway, NH, in varying capacities. She had many close friends who enjoyed lunches out and glasses of wine with her.

THANK YOU ST. JUDE May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, gloriďŹ ed, loved and preserved throughout the world now and forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, helper of the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer 9 times a day, by the 9th day your prayers will be answered. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised and done.

Anita enjoyed cooking, baking, knitting, sewing, traveling (she went in the ocean at 89 in Bermuda while on a cruise!) and long walks with her dogs. Anita was preceded in death by her husband Philip (1997) and daughter Nancy Spaulding (1999) of South Berwick. She is survived by her daughter Pam Wheeler and her husband Charles of Cleveland, TN; son-in-law Gary Spaulding of South Berwick; as well as four grandchildren, Amanda and Billy Carestio of Golden, CO, and their three children: Jasanna and Allen Sequeira of North Berwick, and their two children; Jeff and Katie Spaulding of York, and their son; and Charlie and Wendy Wheeler of Cleveland, TN, and their two children. “Say not in grief she is no more - but live in thankfulness she was. - Hebrew proverb Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Leaders should practice this themselves and then help their companies facilitate it for employees. • Practice effective communication. Communication isn’t just about what you say, it’s how well you listen, Wekelo says. “You want to be an active listener,â€? she says. “That means you not only hear the words the other person is saying, but you try to understand the complete message that’s being sent.â€? To achieve that, you should practice empathy, focus your attention, show you are listening through both verbal and nonverbal responses, suspend judgment, ask questions and verify that you correctly understand the other person’s message. • Focus on your people. If employees are happy, customers will have a better experience, Wekelo says. Three key factors to achieving that, she says, are hiring the right people, providing a robust and generous benefits package, and prioritizing wellness efforts that encourage employees to exercise and eat right. • Regularly conduct employee surveys. It’s important to ask employees about what’s working and what’s not working. “But remember that surveys that only gather information are not useful,â€? Wekelo says. “To make them effective, your organization must also provide detailed results back to your team and create an implementation plan that includes some of your

A Brief History of American Football According to Nielsen, 111.3 million people tuned in to watch the Super Bowl in early 2017. Almost two-thirds of adults in the United States say they currently watch National Football League games. But American football is no longer relegated to the boundaries of the United States, as it is becoming a global sport. According to the International Federation of American Football, there are 80 countries with organized federations governing the game. Plus, thousands of youth and adult leagues exist all over the world. Even though soccer has long been a global sport, it

seems the other kind of “football is quickly catching up. The sport known as American football was borne out of the English sports of association football (soccer) and rugby. During the late 19th century, elite Northeastern colleges took up the sport, playing a soccer-type game with rules adopted from the London Football Association. Intercollegiate matches began to spring up at schools such as Rutgers, Princeton, Harvard, and McGill University. Rugby-type rules became preferential among players and spectators. Walter Camp, known af-

fectionately as the “Father of American Football, transformed the rugby-style game into the one that resembles American football today. Camp brought two key innovations to the game. The opening “scrummage was eliminated, and a rule was introduced that required a team to give up the ball after failing to advance down the field a specific yardage. Camp also developed the quarterback position, lines of scrimmage and the scoring scale used in football today. Early games were controversial because of the high rate of injury. ~ News ~ an only child. Dad is survived by his twin brother, Richard (Dick) Yeskoo, his cousin, Betty Myers, and several nieces and nephews and their families. Mom is survived by several cousins and their families. Both are survived by us three children, their granddaughter, Hana Yeskoo, three step-grandchildren Sarah, Matthew, and Valerie, and seven step-great grandchildren. We want to emphasize that based solely on their trust in salvation through Jesus Christ, our parents are in Heaven, and we will reunite with them someday and spend eternity together. This is because each of us also made that decision to accept Jesus Christ as our personal Savior. A double burial and memorial service will take place in the spring on a date yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, gifts in their memory may be made to Word of Life Fellowship, Inc, P.O. Box 600, Schroon Lake, NY 12870 (www.wol. org); Authenticity Book House (abhbooks.com);Truth for Life (truthforlife.org). Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale. To leave a message of condolence please visit www.blackfuneralhomes.com.

Through the years Mom also enjoyed several jobs in the workplace; she especially enjoyed working for Dr. Elliot Ginchansky, an Asthma Allergy Specialist in Dallas, Texas. One of the highlights of Dad’s retirement was working with Rear Admiral Richard Rybacki to bring the tall ships to Portland, during OpSail 2000. At that time he also celebrated his 71st birthday aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Eagle. Our parents ultimately retired in Wells, Maine, and we think we can safely say they enjoyed every minute of their lives there. Dad had a larger-than life personality, while Mom was quieter and enjoyed reading, quilting, and her Bible study with dear friends. Since childhood, dad loved airplanes, studying the Bible; and he was particularly proud of his Dutch heritage and the relatives he found in The Netherlands. Both of our parents enjoyed church work and, as we grew up, we all enjoyed annual New England vacations. Dad was predeceased by his parents and three older sisters- Dorothy Vink, Ruth Eck, and Lois Kendall. Mom was

tlement. With debt settlement, you stop sending money to your creditors and send a new, lower monthly payment to the debt settlement company instead. Once your accounts are a few months past due, the company works to negotiate a settlement with your creditors. In the interim, creditors report your late payments. Often, the debt settler can negotiate a settlement that’s considerably less than your original debt, but the costs are still significant. Late payments remain on your credit report for up to seven years. Debt management may be an option. You might consider working with a nonprofit credit counseling agency on a debt management plan, which combines multiple creditor payments into a single monthly payment. It reduces the time it takes to repay credit card debt while lowering the total amount of interest paid. It also eliminates collection calls, late fees and over-limit fees. to gain traction with the public. The American Professional Football Association was formed in 1920. That league would later become the National Football

League. The first televised NFL game occurred in 1939. Eventually, American football’s popularity would explode. Cheerleaders were introduced to the game in the 1960s. Currently, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders are the most famous squad. Six teams in the NFL do not have cheerleaders: the Chicago Bears, the Cleveland Browns, the Detroit Lions, the New York Giants, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Green Bay Packers. Football games typically last around 3 hours. Average attendance for an NFL game is 66,957 spectators. American football has become a multibillion-dollar industry. What developed on college campuses has grown into a worldwide phenomenon.
