Tim Janis Celebrates Christmas all Throughout the Year

Tim Janis and Paul Mccartney, (seated) with two associates at Abbey Road Studios in England during taping of Music of Hope.

By Nancye Tuttle Contributing Reporter YORK – Musician and filmmaker Tim Janis is filled with the Christmas spirit all year long. His uplifting music promotes peace, understanding and goodwill - and his philanthropic foundation raises hundreds of thousands of dollars to fight cancer, raise autism awareness and support local libraries, hospice and homeless organizations.

It’s what he loves doing. And, while he works with superstars like Sir Paul Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Kate Winslet, George Clooney and Dick Van Dyke, he remains unaffected and committed to sharing his talents for good causes. “Fundraising and creating work that inspires others go hand in hand for me, says Janis. A University of New Hampshire music composition graduate, Janis has loved south-

ern Maine since his college days in the early 1990s, when he had a recording studio on Rt. 1 in York. Today, he and his fiancĂŠe Elizabeth Demmer make their home in York. “Maine has always supported me and my work,â€? he said. Always keen on helping others, a turning point in Janis’ career took place in 2002 when he collaborated with McCartSee JANIS page 5...

Student Boats Launched at The Landing School KENNEBUNKPORT The Landing School successfully launched 12 Student Built Boats as their first December launching in nearly 10 years. The Landing School resurrected the old tradition of launching first semester projects just before the holiday break last Friday, December 18, in Kennebunkport. Students, faculty, parents, and supportive community members gathered to celebrate this tradition. After a welcome from Landing School President, Dr.

Richard Schuhmann, and a traditional blessing by Reverend Charles Whiston of Old South Congregational Church in Kennebunkport, the twelve small crafts were Christened with champagne by the students and launched in the Kennebunk River. The Landing School’s wooden boat-building students built eight classic 12 foot “Yankee Skiffs using lumber harvested in New England. The

WELLS Zeus and Marley and the rest of the kitties at our Adoption Center wish you all a Merry Christmas and thank you for the food donations. Recently two mother cats with their kittens were adopted. Not many people want to add 3-4 kitties all at once, and not everyone can meet our adoption standards. These two families of mother and kittens had long been waiting for their forever homes, but we never considered breaking up the families or lowering our standards. Christmas has been delivered to us daily, by supporters who have brought cans of cat food and donations for our store and shelter. Susan in York amazed us as her elves carried

We were also very touched by a young boy, who delivered a big bag of specially selected cat food and treats that he purchased with money he earned doing chores. A touching story to share: Doreen from Lyman was purchasing a toy chicken marionette at our thrift store, and she told me about a red hen she noticed in her yard recently. It seemed odd, since none of her neighbors had chickens. The hen stayed all day, and when her daughter Rachel came home from school they fed the hen Rice Krispies. agility star! My new family and I will be treated to free mandatory classes here at the shelter after I’m adopted. This will give us a chance to bond and work as a team while learning more about the behavior modification plan AWS has put in place for me. My gentle leader and crate are also two important tools I need for continued success in my training. Luckily AWS will supply you with both for free upon my adoption. Meet Miles, an 11-year old short-haired cat. Miles is a sweet senior looking for a new home to spend his golden years in. He has hyperthyroidism, so he will need to be on a daily medication. Regardless, he is an affectionate and kind-hearted kitty who will enhance any home he becomes a part of. Teagan is an adult Lionhead Mix rabbit. She is a fluffy delight who would make a great addition to just about any household. All she needs is a habitat filled with rabbit necessities and lots of love from her people.

Touched by this hen’s generosity, they filled a cardboard box with leaves and set it under their deck. The hen loved her new “home and nested in it. Again, another egg to say thank you! The next day, Doreen came home to find her kindhearted husband, Todd, busy with hammer and nails, building a hen house just for their new family member, who they have named Penny. This gift of love all started with an egg.

SANFORD – Hannaford Supermarkets and the American Heart Association (AHA) recently partnered to help keep kids healthy and active during the Maine winter. The Carl J. Physical Education teacher Kay Wilkins did not have snowshoes for the kindergarten through third grade students for a popular after school snowshoe club. Hannaford Supermarkets stepped in with a donation so that all kids at the school could participate. “We applaud Hannaford and the Carl J. A fraction of these interview with pageant staff and thirty or so teens are invited to the semi-finals that took place the weekend after Thanksgiving in Portland. Each of the participating young ladies supported the other. The girls are chosen based on integrity, community service, confidence, spirit and heart. Sarah chose to pursue her platform of bullying awareness. More so, Holdsworth believed in the support of those who have experienced bullying to begin the process of rebuilding selfesteem and confidence. To this end, she is currently working

with others to develop a presentation concerning bullying and self-esteem with the intention of traveling around the state speaking to young people and parents. Her catch phrase is "Enough” meaning you are enough, pretty enough, smart enough, talented enough and no one can take that away from you. Holdsworth competed and placed in the top three – second runner up. She has been approached by an organizer of an anti- bullying outreach organization as a result of sharing her story during competition and placing and plans to compete again next year and continue her plans to work within the Maine community.

Meet Traip’s James Lawrence… “I love life; Bring it on!” KITTERY Every once in a while someone comes along whose maturity belies his years. James Lawrence is that person. A junior at Robert W. Traip Academy, at 17 James isn’t vague about his future. He’s prepared and readied himself early on to become a welder. A self-confessed tinkerer, James watched and learned skills from his grandfather, a farmer, and his father, a lobsterman. With a rather unconscious laser-like focus, James’ future has been mapped out by the desire to work with his hands. He’s learned how to repurpose and rehabilitate machinery. A favorite project has been restoring his great grandfather’s 1970 GMC truck, passed down in the family, now complete with a homemade flat bed. “It’s real steel, not tin can new metal they use on cars today.” He says with disdain. Every week James spends his school day in two worlds, one at Traip Academy studying English, History, Geometry and Chemistry in morning classes then taking a van with other schoolmates to Sanford Regional Technical Center where his skills in iron work and welding are put to the test. James will be a certified welder, after graduation and will have most, if not all, of the credentials needed to be a journeyman. When not in class, James spends time daily in the weight room preparing to play as

number 66 for the Rangers, as lineman. Having played football since the 5th grade he is glad to hear that the Kittery School Committee recently agreed to reinstate football for the Shapleigh School 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. “This is my 6th year being number 66. Every year everyone takes a new number. Not me, I don’t see the need. I’m number 66! I play nose tackle, nose guard. I’m the man in the middle. I love the game. I read everything I can about it.” When asked about concussion concerns James pauses and firmly says “If they look at the numbers, they’ll see there are more concussions in soccer than football. You’ve got to protect your body as best you can. The weight room work is used to gain strength and a secondary reason is to build muscle. BUSINESS & FINANCE The Force is Strong with Social Security’s Online Services “There’s been an awakening. Have you felt it? This winter, Americans of all generations are awakening to the newest film in the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Many readers probably remember seeing the first Star Wars film in theaters in 1977. Audiences watched with fascination at the advanced technology used by the Jedi and Sith in a galaxy far, far away. We still don’t have interstellar travel, personal robots, or holographic communication, but we now use technology in our daily lives that would have seemed like science fiction in 1977. At that time, it would still be years until the modern Internet and smart phones would be part of our lives. Now, many of us can’t imagine life without such technology. Many people who need to do business with Social Security are finding an awakening of sorts in how easy it is to use our online services. We continually expand our online services to reflect changing customer needs, and to provide you with world-class service that would even have interplanetary traveler Han Solo saying, “Chewie, we’re home. Our online services are convenient and secure, and allow you to conduct much of your business with us from the comfort of your home, office, or space freighter. (Not all services are available in all galaxies).

For instance, you can use our website at www.socialsecurity.gov to apply for retirement, spouse’s, or disability benefits online. You can also apply for Medicare and Extra Help with your Medicare prescription drug costs on our website. We also have online benefit planners to help you estimate your future retirement, disability, and survivors benefits. You can open a free personal online my Social Security account, where you can keep track of your annual earnings and verify them. Why is that important? Because your future benefits are based on your annual earnings. With your account, you can also get an estimate of your future benefits if you are still working; or, if you currently receive benefits, you can use your account to manage your benefits, and get an instant letter ...STEP from page 14 The newly enrolled employers represent 7 counties, 21 towns, and over 3,000 employees. Congratulations to local new Next Step Maine Employers: GWI, Biddeford, York County; Hannaford, Saco, York County; Patriot Subaru, Saco, York County. Enrollment in this statewide initiative is free and once enrolled employees are automatically eligible to receive educational benefits from our Next Step Maine Educational Partners. Learn more at www. nextstepmaine.org.

with proof of your benefits. You can also request a Medicare card replacement. “The force is calling to you. Just let it in. This winter, check out our online services and join the millions of other Americans who have already awakened their own personal my Social Security accounts. A “My Social Security Account is a force to be reckoned with. And you don’t need to be a Jedi to have one. By Elizabeth Newport, Social Security Public Affairs Specialist in Portland.

Parker Receives Maine State Grange Educator of the Year Award NORTH BERWICK David Parker, teacher at Noble High School in North Berwick, received the Educator of the Year Award from the Maine State Grange. The award was presented to him on November 7 by former student Chaley Machado at Riverside Grange #475 located at 488 Little River Road in Lebanon, along with a check in the amount of $100 which Parker donated to the Hurd Backpack Project. Machado sent in the nomination back in August 2015 with a very impressive write up as to why Parker deserved such

an award. Machado stated that not only was he a great teacher who involved the children in work and made a subject such as Physics fun, he made a statement that has lasted until this day. Parker apologized to his students for “His generation depleting the natural resources for the generations to come and his goal is to help improve those resources now. Machado stated, “That statement has stuck with me throughout high school and now into college. After the nomination was submitted to the Maine State Grange Community Service

Committee a panel was assembled to review all the entries. The board panel consisted of Maine State Grange Master Victoria Huff, CS Board Member Cassandra Corliss, Bath Police Officer William Andrew, Bath Fire Chief Brent Libby, and Maine State Grange Community Service Director Christine Corliss who stated there were 5 entries, and Parker was voted unanimously to receive this award. Parker’s entry has now been passed on for consideration of the Northeast Regional Grange. If he is voted to receive the award for Northeast Region he will be asked to attend the Northeast Leadership Conference of Granges to receive the award. Christine Corliss, who is also a member of Riverside

Grange #475 stated, “It was a privilege to be a part of presenting this Award to Mr. Parker. Machado stated, “This was more than a privilege for such a deserving man to receive this

Harrison of Kennebunk, was the stage manager for "Marie and the Nutcracker," the fall 2015 mainstage theater performance at Bates College. The play was written and directed by Martin Andrucki, the college's Charles A. Dana Professor of Theater, who put a modern twist on German writer E.T.A. ...LAWRENCE from page 14 brain. Lobstering in summer with his Dad and snowplowing in the family business during stormy winter months, not much time is left for other pursuits but James golfs and also enjoys hunting. “I do target shooting, I hunt and got my first deer last year. With this interview taking place shortly after the terrorist attacks in Paris, James was asked how he felt about guns and background checks. Again, measuredly, he answered, “I see life as it is. We should have defense. Do a background search, pass the background check and then you should have a gun safety course for pistols. You should be trained how to shoot. But he earnestly added, “Everybody in Kittery I trust. With hopes ultimately to remain in Kittery and find employment at the Portsmouth Ship Yard, James doesn’t feel any need to break away, leav-

ing home to experience a ‘right of passage’. “I don’t need that. I can’t imagine being any other place than Kittery. It’s just home. I don’t ever want to leave. You get lucky to live here. I’m not moving any time soon. With a wide grin, James continued, “I told my Dad ‘Guess who gets to live with you for a while?’ Laughter followed. In a more serious vein when asked if he’s been preparing for his future for a long time, James answered, “I’ve been preparing for it all my life. Life is not given to you. You’ve got to work for it. You just don’t get things. That’s the driving force for all that I’ve done. Think what you want to think. If you’re yourself, you’ll be happy. Submitted by Lois Cosloy, a Kittery resident and a retired educator who has a special interest in showcasing the talented students in the Kittery School Department.

org/moses. The state of Maine offers a wide range of hunting and fishing opportunities. Maine is nearly as large as all the other New England states combined, with over 17 million acres of forested land, 6,000 lakes and ponds and 32,000 miles of rivers and streams. All proceeds from the sale of hunting and fishing licenses stay at the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. IFW also offers additional gift items in our online shop such as IFW logo apparel, The Maine Way cookbook, season passes to the Maine Wildlife Park, or the opportunity to support conservation efforts with the purchase of a Maine Birder Band or Heron Sticker. Dear Computer Lady, I read all of your newsletters and find them very helpful and written for the non-technical minds. Thank you. I have a question about FaceBook tags. Is there a FaceBook setting so that I will not be included in my friends' tags and still follow my friends? Thank you, Linda Dear Linda, When your friends make a post, or post a picture, they can tag you by mentioning your name, or tagging you in the picture. While there doesn't appear to be a setting to stop your friends from tagging you (sometimes simply asking them to not tag you will be the best solution) you can turn on a setting in Facebook that will allow you to manually approve posts that you have been tagged

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ in before they show up on your timeline. It is important to note that this will only stop them from showing up on your timeline, not other peoples timelines. There is also a setting where you can control who can see posts and photos that you have been tagged in. Both these settings are found in the same place. 1. Click on the small triangle located at the top-right corner of your Facebook page. 2. Click on "Settings" in the drop down menu. 3. When the Settings page loads, click on "Timeline and Tagging" in the left column. 4. The first timeline setting has a section where you can review posts friends tag you in before they post to your timeline. Just turn this setting on. 5. In the next sec-

tion, where it says, "who can see things on my timeline?" you can change the settings to "Only Me" so that others can't see the posts. You can change as many settings as you want in this section, in fact if you change everything to "Only Me" you will be almost invisible on Facebook. I hope this helps. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I upgraded to Windows 10 and I hate it. How can I go back to 8.1? Thanks, Linda Dear Linda, Microsoft will actually allow you to go back to your previous operating system for 30 days after you upgrade. Please remember, you should have your data files all backed up before starting this process. You don't want to lose all your documents and pictures. To go back to your previous operating system (In your case Windows 8. 1) just follow these directions: 1. Click on the start menu, and click on "Settings." 2. Click on "Update & Security." 3. Click on "Recovery" in the left column. 4. You should see an option that says, "Go back to Windows 8.1 in the right column. Click the "Get Started" button and follow the prompts to go back. Elizabeth Hello Computer Lady,

I have tried Windows 10 and don't like it. I want to stay with Windows 7 Professional. Is there a way to remove the Icon in the tray that is constantly asking me to install Windows 10? Thanks for your very interesting weekly emails. I look forward to each one. Harlan Dear Harlan, The prompt to upgrade to Windows 10 is actually the result of windows update, KB3035583. All you have to do to remove it, is uninstall the update. Here is how: 1. Open the Control Panel. You can either click on "Start" and "Control Panel", or click on Start and search for the Control Panel. 2. Under "Programs" in the control Panel, click "Uninstall A Program." 3. In the left column, click on "View Installed Updates." 4. In the list of updates, find the update named, KB3035583 you can use the search box in the upperright corner of the window to make it easier. 5. Click on the update, then click, "Uninstall" to remove the update. Your computer will need to restart to finish the removal. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I love reading your newsletter. It Ăs so full of information. Would like to know how

to shorten the URL for webpage links. I know there Ăs software to do this but not sure how it works and which one is the best one. Thanks for your useful newsletter. Teresa Dear Teresa, It is actually very easy to create a shortened URL and there are a few online services out there that will do it for you. First, copy the URL of the web page you want to link to. Next go to one of the online URL shortening services. I like to use TinyUrl.com, but there are quite a few out there Google has one and Bitly is quite popular. When you go to the website, just paste in your long URL, click the button and you will be given a shorter URL to copy and paste into your email message, facebook page, tweet, or whatever you want to use it for. The Google URL shortener at https://goo.gl/ keeps track of the short URLs you have created and even tells you how many times it was clicked on. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. ~ News ~ USCGC Reliance Returns Home

KITTERY – The 81-member crew of the Coast Guard Cutter RELIANCE returned to their homeport at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, Maine on Sunday, December 20, following an eight week patrol, in the Coast Guard’s First District. During their most recent deployment, the crew of the 210-foot RELIANCE was primarily responsible for conducting fisheries boardings to enforce fisheries regulations enacted by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. U.S. Domestic Fisheries is a $24 Billion industries that the Coast Guard helps regu-

late to enhance stewardship of marine ecosystems, assisting in preventing the decline of marine protected species populations and their habitats. RELIANCE served as the Northern New England Search and Rescue response cutter, acting as the first responder for offshore emergency operations. Seaman Apprentice Brandon O’Sullivan who qualified as a Helmsman and lookout said “I’ll remember my first deployment as being really busy, but I really enjoyed the port calls and learning deck seamanship and damage control. First Class Petty Officer Jeff Gehrke said “I’ve never seen a

unit come together through adversity like RELIANCE does, there is compassion and a unity of teamwork that allows us to complete the mission. During RELIANCE’s 54 day deployment, the cutter sailed over 4,000 nautical miles and conducted 47 boarding’s while operating throughout the Northern Atlantic and Gulf of Maine. The cutter conducted training and exercises with Air Station Cape Cod and Coast Guard Cutter TYBEE, a 110 foot Patrol Boat homeported in Woods Hole, MA. The crew enjoyed port calls in Manhattan, NY, Boston, MA and Portland, ME.

After a very successful and rewarding patrol, crewmembers are excited to return home to their loved ones for the

holiday season. RELIANCE is scheduled to be in port for approximately two months before the crew deploys again.

~ News ~ ...JANIS from page 1 ney, Joel, Ray Charles, Andre Previn, Emmanuel Ax, Maya Angelou, the New York Philharmonic and London Symphony to produce Music of Hope, a fundraising CD for the American Cancer Society. “The artists were great to work with and raising money to fight cancer was important to them, he said. The album rose to #1 on the Billboard classical charts. Janis, who produced the album, contributed $100,000 to the ACS and created his non-profit Music of Hope organization to benefit and raise awareness to important causes through music, film and performance. Janis also mentors young musicians through his Celebrate America project, a collaboration with school music teachers who bring their high school choirs to local PBS stations to tape a performance. Janis supervises and edits each program. Over 30,000 students have participated in Celebrate America, with this winter’s programming planned in Montana and Salt Lake City, Utah. “Students have the opportunity to work in a television studio and showcase their musical talents, said Janis. “I am glad that PBS stations do this for their communities. Janis celebrates each holiday season with his American Christmas Carol concert, featuring a large chorus, orchestra and celebrity guest performers,

at Carnegie Hall in New York City. This year’s 10th anniversary concert on December 4 was ranked one of the best holiday shows in the city by CBS television. Over the years, Sarah McLachlan, Kate Winslet, Ioan Gruffudd, Zachary Levi, Loreena McKennitt, Andrea Corr, Hayley Westenra, Jackie Evancho and Neil Sedaka have performed. Proceeds help such organizations as Winslet’s Golden Hat Foundation for autism awareness and the Sarah McLachlan School of Music, which gives no-cost music lessors to at-risk, underserved kids. “The show is joyous and hopeful. I hope to broadcast it nationally in 2016 to inspire people and make them happy, said Janis. Locally, Janis recently performed a benefit holiday concert at Saint Mary’s Church in Wells to raise funds for hospice. His friend Bill Thompson organized the concert in honor of his wife Jackie, who passed away this year in hospice care. Besides the concerts, Janis and Demmer joined Dick Van Dyke for his 90th birthday celebration at Disneyland. They became friends with Van Dyke after he appeared in Janis’ first film, The Button Girl, shot locally and in California in 2014. “Dick is a national treasure and I hope to make more movies with him, said Janis.. The movie, also starring Jane Seymour and Charles Shaughnessy and narrated by

Winslet, is due to air nationally on PBS in 2016. On February 28, a ticketed sneak preview of the film will be shown at the Music Hall in Portsmouth, N.H. For info and updates, visit www.buttonsthemovie.com. Janis is grateful that his healing music helps others. “There’s a lot of hope in America, and I am glad to help with my music, he said.

The plan is for this to be the first of many visits to the Morrison Center.

~ News ~ Maine High School Students Invited to Participate in Congressional App Challenge 1st DISTRICT MAINE Congresswoman Chellie Pingree has invited high school students in Maine’s 1st District to participate in the Congressional App Challenge. Students have until January 15, 2016, to develop and submit their apps, which will be judged by a panel of experts convened by the Maine Technology Institute. A winner for Pingree’s District will be announced in February. “I applaud how Maine schools are using STEM education to prepare our students for the jobs of tomorrow. This competition is an exciting opportunity to put those skills to

the test while learning how to develop the smartphone apps we use every day, said Pingree. “I hope students give it a shot - I can’t wait to see what they come up with. My thanks to the Maine Technology Institute for their help in connecting Maine’s tech community with the competition. Students must live or attend a high school in Maine’s 1st District to be eligible for the competition. They can participate as individuals or in a team of up to four. In addition to the app, students must also submit a 3-4 minute video explaining their app and how it works.

The apps can cover any topic. They will be judged on 1) the creativity and originality of the app idea; 2) user experience and design of the idea’s implementation; and 3) quality of coding and programming. Information about the competition—including links to coding resources and submission instructions—can be found on Pingree’s website, www.pingree. house.gov/appchallenge. This is the second year Congressional offices around the country are participating in the challenge, which is coordinated by the Internet Education Foundation.

...DRIVE from page 7 ing fatalities in 2014, 69 percent (6,852) were in crashes in which at least one driver in the crash had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .15 or higher. This was nearly twice the set limit in every state. The rate of alcohol impairment among drivers involved in fatal crashes in 2014 was almost four times higher at night than during the day. The percentage of drivers involved in fatal crashes with BACs of .08 or higher was 23 percent among males and 15 percent among females. In December 2014, 788 lives were lost due to drunk driving – one death

every 57 minutes. It is against the law in all 50 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico to drive a vehicle with a BAC of .08 or higher. The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” holiday enforcement crackdown includes more than 10,000 participating police departments and law enforcement agencies. Americans can avoid adding to the toll of drunk driving by following the law, planning a safe ride home, designating a sober driver, or use NHTSA’s SaferRide app to call a taxi or a friend so they can be picked up. The app is available for Android devices on Google Play and Apple devices on the iTunes store.

~ News ~ Students Among Nominees to US Service Academies STATEWIDE Congresswoman Chellie Pingree has announced her office’s nominees to the United States Service Academies—the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York. To be considered for an appointment to a service academy, applicants must be nominated by an autho-

rized nominating source, which includes Members of Congress. “This group of students represents some of Maine’s best and brightest. They have all demonstrated exceptional leadership, high academic standards, and a passion for helping others, said Pingree. “Whatever happens from here, they should all be proud of themselves. We are lucky that they have chosen to offer their talents in service to the country, and it’s an honor to

nominate them. The nominees were interviewed by a panel of six on their academic record, test scores, leadership ability, involvement in extra-curricular activities, and exemplified commitment to serving their country. Local students nominated include: US Naval Academy: David Stansfield, Berwick, Noble High School; U.S. Military Academy: Jacob Connors, Kennebunk, Norwich University, Kennebunk High School (prior); U.S. Airforce Academy: Abby Runnells, Saco, Thornton Academy High School.

‘Bessie’ Perkins’ Letter to Santa YORK A special holiday treat from the archives of the Museums of Old York. This is a letter written by Elizabeth Perkins to Santa Claus. We assume she was perhaps 4 or 5 years old, making the year about 1874. Elizabeth Perkins grew up to be a powerful woman who traveled the world, worked to preserve history, served for years in war-torn France, was an philanthropist and active fundraiser, and who helped to establish and endow the organizations that are now the Museums of Old York.
