York Hospital Outbreak Update YORK As York Hospital’s Infection Control team continues testing efforts in order to assess its progress containing the COVID-19 outbreak, no new patients have tested positive, while eight new staff members have received positive results. Additionally, there has been one more patient death, bringing that number to three. The eight additional COVID-19 positive healthcare workers, from this third round of interval testing, are all associated with Inpatient Adult Healthcare and bring the cumulative number of positive staff to 45 cases since the outbreak’s discovery on December 6. The total number of COVID-19 positive patients is 13; there have been no new positive results for patients since December 16. Per Dr. Evangeline Thibodeau, lead of the hospital’s In-
fection Control team, “Through our daily communication with Dr. Sears at the Maine CDC, we continue to move forward with interval testing of staff, following their approved guidelines. As we’ve seen from the onset of the outbreak, all staff positive results remain concentrated within the Inpatient Adult Healthcare team; And as directed by the CDC, we will continue to respond and act quickly, expanding testing as needed. Additionally encouraging, as our caregivers who were COVID-positive continue to return from their ten day isolation periods, they join with those who have been previously reassigned to areas of more urgent need. This has allowed us to successfully maintain appropriate staffing levels for all services we offer.” In addition to vigilant testing, York Hospital’s HICS

Berwick Public Library Director Sharon Kelly and Children’s Librarian Shilo Fiel have partnered with Pat Vachon from the Somersworth/Berwick Food Pantry to get books to them. Kelly and Fiel have put together packets for the 240 to 300 children of the families who frequent the pantry. Some of the books are newly-purchased, and those purchases are supplemented with books from the library. Each packet for a young child will include a book, a bookmark, coloring pages and crayons. For the older children, the packets will include a book, bookmark, word puzzles, and a holiday pencil. Kelly said the staff is thrilled to be able to reach children in this way and show the library staff’s commitment to the most vulnerable members of the community at such a difficult time.

(Hospital Incident Command System) team meets twice daily to assess any and all policies which may impact the outbreak, gauging the need to further restrict or address any issues that may arise. Thus far, policies limiting the cafeteria to takeout for staff only, strict workstation practices prohibiting eating or drinking, limiting those activities only to one caregiver per closed room, have been imposed. Proper and thorough masking, along with the use of protective eyewear for all staff at all times continues to be a top priority. Adjustments involving patients, such as restrictive in-person visitor policies and postponement of any elective surgeries requiring post-procedural admittance, continue to be enforced. “This outbreak has been the center of our focus since the moment it was discovered, and we continue to treat it incredibly seriously. KENNEBUNK The 6th Annual New Year’s Eve Kennebunk (known as NYE KBK) will take place on Thursday, December 31. styrene foam disposable food service container ban had been scheduled to go into effect January 1, 2021 however, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is delaying its enforcement of the laws that ban the use of these products until July 1, 2021. The department is taking this approach in response to several practical and logistical effects of the pandemic, since COVID-19 has disrupted traditional food marketing and packaging supplies. Demand for groceries, curbside pickup, and takeout food has increased, while the

demand for paper bags and thicker reusable plastic bags has also increased resulting in substantially less supply of both 4-mil reusable plastic bags and paper bags – the substitutes allowed for single-use plastic carry-out bags under the bag law. Additionally, due to concerns over possible virus transmission, many retailers have asked customers not to bring reusable bags from home, moving consumers back to store-
supplied single-use bags. The pandemic is also causing a similar disruption with alternatives to polystyrene foam disposable food service containers that fall under the ban. In addition to a disruption in available packaging supplies, safety protocols have led to greater caution with handling of food and beverages and increased demand for disposable food service ware. State of Civil Emergency Continues AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills extended the State of Civil Emergency through January 20, 2021. The Governor’s decision to extend the emergency is in line with nearly every other state in the nation which have ongoing emergency declarations, according to the National Governors Association. For example, the governors of New Hampshire and Vermont both renewed their States of Emergency this month. “The biggest gift we can give this holiday season is not a
present under the tree or a hug to a loved one. The best gift we can give, and the best gift we can receive, is good health,” said Governor Mills. “Wearing our masks, watching our distance, washing our hands, and limiting gatherings will keep our loved ones safe and healthy and allows us to celebrate safely together next year. other groups are providing more food in disposable packaging than before the pandemic. Therefore, the department has decided to exercise its enforcement discretion to not enforce both the singleuse plastic carry-out bag ban and the polystyrene foam disposable food service container ban until July 1, 2021. The delay in enforcement of these bans is not intended to downplay the importance of eliminating single-use plastic carry-out bags and polystyrene foam disposable food service containers from the waste stream, but rather to address current concerns related to impacts of the pandemic. The DEP strongly encourages those that use singleuse plastic carry-out bags and polystyrene foam disposable food service containers to use this additional time to focus on procuring alternatives to these products and on depleting current stocks of these products before the enforcement date. NOW ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS
By Jim Fabiano There I stood looking up at a white mountain of snow that seemed to reach the sky. The snow was packed tight with pale blue facets in the crevices and the wind whipped a fine spray from the summit like Everest. I was absolutely awestruck by its size and beauty and I wished like hell it wasn’t in the middle of my driveway. The day after our first major snowstorm began with me trying to open my garage door. It took about half an hour of me chipping away at the ice between the bottom of the door and the pavement that had sealed it shut. When the door finally opened to reveal the spectacular winter vista before me my first thought was how beautiful it was. It was like that scene in The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy’s world turns from black and white to color except in reverse. The world had been transformed into a glittering white wonderland. After a few minutes standing there admiring this view of nature I decided I better start my snow blower. Like my garage doors it wouldn’t budge. It was frozen solid to the garage floor. It took me a good 10 minutes heaving it this way and that, like a team of sled dogs trying to break the runners loose, before I was able to budge it and drag it

over to the open doorway. Then it wouldn’t start. When you’re shoveling the snow a snow blower seems like a great idea until you spend $1,800 on one and discover the dirty little secret about snow blowers that you expend about the same amount of energy getting them to start as you would shoveling 20 feet of driveway. Another 10 minutes passed with me yanking on the cord trying to get it to start. I began with a few earnest prayers and sweet encouragement to the machine and descended rapidly into abuse and threats. I wondered if the pain in my shoulder was the first warning of a heart attack. Yanking on the cord for the 20th time the machine spoke to me. I think it was: ‘What are you trying to do - make scrap iron out of me?’I told it that its mother was an Edsel and its father a Pinto and that worked because it coughed loudly into action. I was so excited I shoved it out into the snowy wilderness and began throwing a huge white plume of snow over my head. Unfortunately I had forgotten to point the chute in the right direction and the torrent of snow poured deep into my garage. I swear the sound of the snow blower engine had a chuckle in it. I grabbed the chute to point it in another direction and it swung around and blasted a jet of freezing snow right into my face, filling my eyes, nose and throat and pouring down my neck and inside my clothes. I opened my mouth to scream and took a couple of pounds of snow into both lungs before snapping my mouth shut and then my whole face went numb.
I smacked the chute away from me and wiped the hard packed snow out of my face. It actually took a couple of seconds to pry my eyelids apart and when I forced air through my nose two little white plugs flew out into the snow bank. At last the machine seemed to have got its revenge and began going in the direction I wanted, clearing a nice, neat white pathway through the three feet of snow in my driveway towards the main road. And I have to say, when it was up and running and doing its thing, it did a good job until it reached the barricade at the end of my driveway that the Town snowplow had left for me. The snowplow had shoved about 50 feet of accumulated snow on my half of the road into the entrance of my driveway creating a wall about five feet high and 20 feet thick. The machine took one bite at it and stalled. It took me another 10 minutes to coax it into starting again and I think I heard it sob when I pushed it back into Mount Fabiano. Back and forth I pushed it, nursing and coaxing it, a few inches at a time, firing a high arc of snow over my head and moving forward about an inch at a time. As I inched forward the wind picked up and began blowing snow back into the path I had cleared until I disappeared in the middle of a blizzard that deposited more snow behind me than I was able to clear. Now it was a challenge. The Fabiano blood was up. I wanted to clear a thoroughfare through that sucker then climb up and stick a flag on top and proclaim See FABIANO page 6...

...FABIANO from page 4 my triumph to the world. I had weathered too many New England winters to be defeated. At last I broke through and gave the kind of manly cheer that makes women shake their heads at how little it takes to make us happy and turned back up my driveway to begin widening my breakthrough. Then I heard a distant rumble. I paused and the rumble grew to a roar and I saw the amber flashing light of the town plow as it began another sweep up my road. It barreled up
my road with unstoppable force, throwing a tsunami of snow in front of it and all I could do was stand there and stare in horror as it bore down on me. The beast roared past and in a microsecond myself and my snow blower were completely engulfed in a tidal wave of snow. I spat snow from my mouth, waved my arms and yelled “avalaaaanche” at the top of my lungs and as the snow plow roared away I know I heard its driver give a wild maniacal laugh. I began digging upwards in

my silent, snowy tomb and after a few minutes broke through into daylight. I then clawed my way, one hand at a time, out of the newly formed snow bank, trudged back up to my garage and retrieved the snow shovel to dig out my snow blower. After about half an hour I had it clear and pulled it out into the street so I could begin cleaning snow out of all its vital organs, promising it that I would never insult it again, change its oil regularly and only fill it with premium gasoline. It took me a good two hours to clear enough snow from my driveway to get just one of our cars out of the garage. Under the thick coating of snow that clung to my outer clothing I was drenched in sweat. I felt like a worm in a cocoon hoping to once again develop into a human being. But, I had finally freed my family and myself from one of the first big storms of winter. I cleaned my snow blower, changed its oil, Simonized it and put it under the garage stairs. It’s still early in this winter season and I know I am going to be pulling it out of its home many times before I see the first daffodils of spring. I then had a thought I had not had since I was a kid. I hadn’t seen this much snow in years. Why not jump off one of the high mountains that now surrounded my driveway, fall on my back and make a snow angel? Why not indeed? I deserved the fun. I did just that. I went back out into the snow, climbed the

I rolled down the biggest snow pile onto my back and lay there, sweeping my arms in the deep snow, making a snow angel. I closed my eyes and let the bright sun melt the crumbs of snow in my beard. It felt good to be a kid again. I then heard a soft fluttering sound, a shadow passed across my closed eyes and something warm settled on my face. I jumped up and a seagull squawked and flew off in a cloud of white and once again I swear I heard the sound of laughter. OGUNQUIT At the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce’s recent annual meeting, Ogunquit Playhouse and the chamber hosted a tribute to Norm “Pop” Hebert, Norm Hebert Jr., and their team at Bintliff’s for their numerous
contributions to the community of Ogunquit during their 17 years in business. To thank the Heberts for their generosity, the chamber offered to make a $200 donation to the nonprofit of their choice, and the Heberts selected Ogunquit Playhouse.
Decorate the Winter Wildlife Tree! KENNEBUNK The public is welcome to bring a wildlife-friendly ornament to the Winter Wildlife Tree at Kennebunk Land Trust’s Mousam River Wildlife Sanctuary, a 38-acre preserve with over 2,400 feet of frontage along the river. The Winter Wildlife Tree is located on the left-hand side of the trail, just a few hundred yards from the trailhead. Kiosk information, created by KLT’s student-volunteer, shares fun facts about Maine birds who might visit the tree! Ornaments must be placed in the tree or attached to a branch with biodegradable string. Artificial string and metal/plastic hooks are harmful to birds and other wildlife and should not be used. Pine cone feeders covered with peanut butter and birdseed,
small suet balls, suet cakes, and un-salted popcorn are great ornament ideas. This is a fun opportunity to get outside, recreate locally, and learn about wildlife. The program will run through the New Year. Directions to the sanctuary: From Route 1 in Ken-
nebunk, turn onto Water Street and proceed .30 miles to the parking lot on the left side of Water Street, directly after the Kennebunk Treatment Plant’s Administrative Building. KLT parking spaces are identified with a white sign and green letters. The trailhead is approximately 100 feet further down Water Street on the left.

First Parish Church Re-Imagines Christmas Eve YORK Rev. Eric Dupee, Senior Pastor at First Parish Church, 180 York Street, York, reflects, “One of my fondest memories as a kid is worship on Christmas Eve. For me, there has always been something special about crowding into a house of worship, singing carols, hearing the story of the birth of Jesus, and seeing candles light up the darkness. After serving as Senior Pastor at First Parish Church for less than three months, I would like nothing more than to have that experience with the York Community. However, on account of the pandemic, we will not crowd into pews and sing carols this year but I’m excited about the ways we have re-imagined our cherished traditions to
safely celebrate Christmas Eve this year.” There will be a familyoriented virtual worship service available on the First Parish Church website (www.firstparishyork.net) and on the church’s Facebook page (firstparishyork) by 5:30 p.m. There will also be a meditative virtual worship service available by 8 p.m. There are also two opportunities for those looking to get out and experience lights and a bit of the Christmas story on Christmas Eve. Throughout the evening hours, the public is invited to stroll the luminaria-lit church grounds and reflect on the meaning of Christmas while music from this year’s virtual “Christmas in the Village” concert plays in the background.

Dear Computer Lady, I have a 32GB flash drive connected to my hard drive for automatic backups. Now I’m getting a message that my flash drive doesn’t have enough space. When a computer does automatic backups doesn’t the new replace the old info? Do I need to get a new and larger flash drive, erase the current one or what? Thank you for all the great info you share with us in your emails! Bonnie Dear Bonnie, The answer to these questions depends on a few things. First, when a computer does automatic backups, it might replace old backups with the new one, it might not. It really depends on what backup software you
~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ are using, and how you have it setup. When using either Acronis True Image, or the Windows 10 backup, you have the option to keep older backups, or not. You can also keep a certain number of older backups, say the five most recent backups. This can be valuable in the event that you accidentally lose data in a document, or get infected with ransomware. Next, do you need a new, larger flash drive? The short answer is, yes, but the reasons go beyond just the size of the flash drive. 32GB is a fairly small backup size in today’s world of saving your documents, photos, music and videos. I backup files for my customers almost every day and most of these backups are larger than 32GB. Flash drives are great for short term storage, but if you
are using a flash drive for daily or weekly backups, I would suggest you buy a new one every six months or so. At the very least, replace it every year. The packaging on your flash drive might say that it will last a lot longer, but flash drives don’t usually fail because of their age, but because they have a limited number of write cycles. This means that the more often you backup and replace files on the flash drive, the shorter it’s lifespan will be. If I was backing up to a flash drive, I would buy myself two identical flash drives and swap them out every week. That way if the drive attached to your computer fails, or is compromised by ransomware, you have another copy that is only a week old. I would also start each year with two brand new flash drives to backup to. I hope this helps with your backup plans. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have been a long time reader of your newsletter and have learned any number of useful things about computers. I consider myself to be an “experienced newbie” but still have questions in many areas. I get a little bent out shape when the advice is always given: back up all your files before reinstalling Windows or doing a new install or similar. What does that actually mean? I know I can go to “My Documents” where most people likely keep all their personal files and save that. However if you are the techie that I bring my computer to in order to do some major overhaul – what specifically do you do in your backup of my computer to avoid losing my
data? There must be more than just copying “My Documents” folder. Where else do you search and what for – drivers, settings, etc.? Thanks in advance, Arthur Dear Arthur, Only the owner of a computer can tell me exactly what needs to be backed up on their computer. Backing up all your data might mean a lot of music and videos to one person, while it could be thousands of photos to someone else, or letters and spreadsheets to another. My secret to a good backup is communicating with you. The first and most important thing that I do to backup your computer is ask you some questions. I want to know things like what you use your computer for, if you keep any files in unusual places, what type of email program you use, etc. Your answers to these questions tell me what I am looking for when I go to backup your data. After our interview, I find that I can usually back up most computers by simply backing up the “Users” folder. This saves your documents, pictures, videos, music, favorites, Windows contacts, and most other types of user data. If there is anything out of the ordinary that you are concerned about, I will do a full image of the hard drive so that all the files on the computer are saved. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I suddenly am having strange problems with my e-mail. When typing a note, sometimes (not always) when I get to a word with a “T” in it... the letters following the t will have jumped
somewhere in the prior lines or even prior paragraph. I have to look for the cursor to find it, backspace to get rid of whatever letters I had typed and then go back to the word I intended to write. Obviously when this happens with every third or fourth “t”, I give up. How do I fix this? Thanks for your help. I’ve been reading your column for years and years and always at least one item that helps me or explains things. Please keep up the excellent work, Mary Dear Mary, While I would have to take a look at your computer to figure out exactly what is wrong, I strongly suspect that the problem is with your keyboard. Perhaps there is a stuck letter, or the letter T has a short in it. Maybe even reaching for the letter T is causing your palms to brush against the touchpad and moving your cursor. Try plugging in a new keyboard. If you have a desktop computer, you can just unplug the current keyboard and plug in a new one. If you are using a laptop, just plug in a USB keyboard and type on that instead of the built in keyboard. That will probably fix this problem. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I had Windows 10 updated to my Windows 8 and I actually like it. I had a virus and sent my computer out to be fixed but when I got it back it defaulted back to eight. The company who fixed it said they cannot put 10 back on. Is that true? Is there another way I can get 10 back for free again? See COMPUTER page 9...

AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills announced that her Administration has awarded $5.6 million in CARES Act Coronavirus Relief Fund (CRF) monies to fund the construction of permanent internet infrastructure that will bring high-speed broadband to more than 730 students across rural Maine.

The awards are the result of a new Mills Administration initiative called ConnectKidsNow! that brought together State government, school superintendents, and several of Maine’s Internet Service Providers in a public-private partnership to improve internet access and to build it out to new rural locations. “Internet access is no longer a luxury, it is a necessity, and no child in Maine should be left out of the classroom because they can’t get online,” said Governor Mills. “This public-private partnership will make a significant difference by bringing broadband to more kids in more rural communities so they can stay connected to their teachers and to one another. Still, there is more work to do. As long as any Maine child struggles to learn because of a lack of internet access, I will continue to push for expanded broadband across the state of Maine.” ConnectKidsNow! is a new initiative by the Mills Administration to further connect Maine students to high speed internet access amidst the pandemic. In
response to the pandemic over the past several months, many school districts across Maine have developed and implemented a hybrid-learning model that divides students into cohorts, with one cohort attending school and the other cohorts engaged in remote learning from home. Some models also allow for schools to teach fully remotely, if deemed appropriate. The Administration and Superintendents then partnered with Internet Service Providers who, in turn, evaluated where they would be able to build the necessary infrastructure to connect students to high speed internet before the end of this year, the deadline for using the CARES Act Funds established by the U.S. Treasury Department. As a result, the Mills Administration awarded a total of $5.6 million in CRF monies to seven Internet Service Providers to bring high-quality broadband to Maine students and rural communities. Comcast was awarded $77,000 to extend service to students living on unserved roads in Berwick and Kittery.

157-Acre Conservation Project in Ogunquit Nearing Completion
...COMPUTER from page 8 Thank you for all your help in all your newsletters. Linda Dear Linda, Since you already had Windows 10 installed on your computer, you should be able to install it again, Microsoft will recognize your hardware and automatically activate Windows 10. When you upgraded to Windows 10 originally, Microsoft generated a license certificate that is linked to the hardware of your computer. It stores that certificate online in a database. If you need to install Windows 10 again on that same hardware, it will check and find that certificate and automatically activate Windows 10. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? OGUNQUIT Opportunities for large acreage conservation projects are rare in Ogunquit. Great Works Regional Land Trust is working to conserve the Old Boston Land, the largest tract of undeveloped land in Ogunquit, with 157 acres of wooded land and historic farm foundations. It has more than 2,000 feet of frontage on the Ogunquit River, abuts York Land Trust’s HiltonWinn Preserve, and will add to some 6,000 acres of contiguous conservation land at Mt. Agamenticus. The conservation organization is asking for donations to complete the project. Thanks to grant funding and overwhelming support from the citizens of Ogunquit, Great Works is well on its way to completing this significant conservation project. A grant of $860,000 of the $1.215
million needed was received from the Maine Natural Resource Conservation Program (MNRCP), an unprecedented amount, demonstrating the project’s high level of support. In addition, the Town of Ogunquit placed a warrant article for $300,000 on the November Town Warrant, which received an 88% positive vote. Great Works is raising the remaining $55,000 needed for long term stewardship of the Old Boston Land, including establishing a parking area, building trails, and contributing to a permanent stewardship endowment for the property. Community members recognize the importance of this project and are contributing to a crowd funding campaign on the organization’s website. It’s “great to be able to enjoy open space now and preserve it for the future,” said
Ogunquit residents Larry and Sally Carlson. $37,000 of the $55,000 has been raised to date. Conservation of this property will forever provide valuable benefit to water quality and wildlife habitat, as well as provide recreational opportunities such as hiking, birding, hunting, and snowshoeing. With its frontage on the Ogunquit River, the Old Boston Land plays an important and enhancing critical ecosystem services such as water filtration which is so important for healthy beaches. “This land has been with the same family – the Bostons and their descendants – for more than two hundred years,” says Keith Fletcher, a project manager for Maine Coast Heritage Trust, the coordinator of the project. “So, the opportunity to conserve it is quite literally an historic opportunity. Fortu-
nately, the family has long stewarded the land well and trusts Great Works Regional Land Trust to do the same.” Anyone wishing more information or to donate to the project is encouraged to visit www.gwrlt.org or contact Great Works Regional Land Trust at 207-646-3604. Donations may be made online at www.gwrlt. org, or by check to GWRLT, PO Box 151, South Berwick, ME 03908. Since 1986, Great Works Regional Land Trust has conserved and protected over 6,000 acres of land within the towns of Berwick, North Berwick, South Berwick, Eliot, Ogunquit, and Wells. The membership-supported organization also maintains trails and offers outings on eighteen preserves, open to the public from dawn to dusk.

1 cup of butter 2 jumbo eggs 1 cup of molasses or 1/2 cup of molasses and 1/2 of real maple syrup 2 cups of finely chopped mission figs 1 tsp grated fresh lemon rind 1 cup of buttermilk 2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking soda 2 tsp of baking powder 1 tsp of salt 1 tsp of cinnamon 1 tsp of nutmeg 2 cups of a good Brandy Cheesecloth, about 3 sq.ft.
Directions: Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease a 9” Bundt or tube pan. Beat butter until soft then add eggs and molasses or molasses and maple syrup and beat until fluffy. Add chopped figs, grated lemon rind and buttermilk. In a second bowl combine the rest of the ingredients (dry ingredients) blend well. Pour
the dry ingredients into the fig mixture and stir well. Pour into the greased pan and cook for about an hour or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool for 15 minutes, and then run a knife around the edges of the cake pan to dislodge then let cool completely. Place the Figgy Pudding in a nice serving plate. Soak the cheese cloth in brandy and wrap the sides and top of the pudding like cake. Add the extra brandy to the pudding a bit at a time over the next 24 hours keeping the cheesecloth moist at all times. Keep in the refrigerator during this time of soaking the Figgy Pudding. Remove the cheesecloth when serving. When serving, heat a small metal ladle filled with a couple ounces of Brandy. Now light up the brandy with a lighter. Pour the bluish flames of brandy slowly over the top of the pudding and serve Enjoy!

FINANCE & CAREER Employee Wage and Paid Leave Info for 2021 STATEWIDE In 2016, Maine voters approved an increase to the minimum wage from $7.50 to $12 in four steps. There was also a provision that once this was completed that the wage would increase annually adjusted by the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers or CPI-W for the Northeast Region. This is the first year of the CPI adjustment. That number has been calculated for 2021 and it is $12.15 per hour starting on January 1, 2021. Also starting on Jan-
uary 1, 2021, the earned paid leave program begins. This was passed in the first year of the biennium or 2019, but implementation was delayed until 2021 due to a variety of factors including that the law needed to go through a rule making exercise. That occurred through the early stages of the pandemic in virtual meetings. Highlighted Items: Includes all industries except for seasonal industries for employers with more than 10 employees in Maine for more than 120 days in any calendar
year; Includes all employees: full-time, part-time, temporary, per diem, etc.; Employees accrue 1 hour of Earned Paid Leave for every 40 hours worked, up to 40 hours in a defined year; Employers may use their discretion to frontload Earned Paid Leave at the beginning of the year; Employees can carry over up to 40 hours from one defined year to the next; Employees can use up to 40 hours in any defined year; Employers can apply a
MaineCF Grants Available STATEWIDE The Maine Community Foundation’s Community Building Grant Program is open and accepting applications from nonprofit and public organizations seeking funding for projects that strengthen communities. The 2021 Community Building Grant Program will focus on funding to build community resilience during the pandemic, with changes to program criteria, priorities, and types of funding. Priority will be given to projects or organizations that support people at higher risk to be negatively impacted by COVID-19. Informational Zoom sessions for grantseekers will
review program changes for community-building grants: Thursday, January 14, 2021, 12-1 p.m. Email events@mainecf.org to sign up. The deadline for applying is February 15, 2021. A volunteer committee of York County residents and community leaders reviews grant applications and makes recommendations for funding. Application, guidelines, and a list of 2020 grants are available at www.mainecf.org. In 2020, the York County Committee awarded $71,785 in grants to 13 nonprofit organizations or communities, including: MapleStone, Acton, to increase the school’s instructional skill and capacity to effectively work with students who have
experienced trauma or Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) Town of Kennebunk, to improve the existing, aging skatepark and engage the community in the process of creating a safe, inclusive, recreational space for all to enjoy; York County Shelter Programs Inc., Alfred, to contract with an organizational consultant for board governance trainings, facilitation of strategic planning, and professional assessment/support for re-stabilizing YCSP. The York County Fund is built through donations from the community. For more information, contact Gloria Aponte C., MaineCF senior program officer, at 207-412-0847 or gaponteclarke@mainecf.org.
New Identity Protection by IRS WASHINGTON, D.C. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced recently that, starting in January, the Identity Protection (IP) PIN program will now be expanded to all taxpayers who can properly verify their identities. This expansion was prompted by the Taxpayer Identity Protection Act, bipartisan legislation authored by U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Doug Jones (D-AL) to thwart identity theft tax refund fraud and prevent American taxpayers and seniors from falling victim. This legislation was signed into law last year as a provision in the Taxpayer First Act. “Each year, tens of thousands of Americans are victims of tax refund fraud, and seniors are particularly vulnerable,” said Senator Collins, the Chairman of the Aging Committee. “Having an IP PIN has
proven to protect against identity theft. This expansion by the IRS is an encouraging, concrete step to help protect taxpayers from being ripped off by criminals and ensure that they receive the refunds to which they are entitled.” The IP PIN is a six-digit number assigned to eligible taxpayers to help prevent the misuse of their Social Security number on fraudulent federal income
tax returns. An IP PIN helps the IRS verify a taxpayer’s identity and accept their electronic or paper tax return. Taxpayers who obtain an IP PIN should never share their code with anyone but their trusted tax provider. The IRS will never call to request the taxpayer’s IP PIN, and taxpayers must be alert to potential IP PIN scams. For more information, visit www.irs.gov.

Maine Home Sales and Values Up in November AUGUSTA Low for-sale inventory and high demand for Maine’s lifestyle has driven real estate sales and values into double-digit gains. Today, Maine Listings reported that 1,965 single-family existing homes changed hands in November—a rise of 31.17% compared to November 2019. Values also increased 20% to a median sales price (MSP) of $270,000, comparing November 2020 to November 2019. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. “Residential real estate activity in Maine is vigorous,” says Tom Cole, 2020 President of the Maine Association of Realtors and Broker with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate The Masiello Group in Brunswick. “In most markets across Maine, Realtors are reporting multiple offer situations on move-in ready listings. The increased competition for historically low for-sale inventory availability is resulting in price appreciation.” “January through Novem-
ber sales are 7.9% ahead of the comparable time period for 2019—Maine’s best year ever. One-third of November’s sales involved out-of-state buyers, compared to one-fourth during November of 2019.” Nationally, sales of single-family existing homes rose 25.6% in November 2020 compared to November 2019. According to The National Association of Realtors, values also increased 15.1% to a national MSP of $315,500. The regional Northeast witnessed a sales jump of 25.7%, and the regional MSP of $354,100 represents a 17.4% increase comparing November 2020 to November 2019. “Maine’s reputation as a safe place is fueling interest,” says Cole. “With tight market conditions, buyers and sellers should partner with a Realtor for expert counsel around inventory availability, marketing and pricing, and negotiating strategies to successfully achieve their real estate needs and goals.”

Church Food Drive Helps York County Food Pantry KENNEBUNKPORT First Church has long supported the YCS Food Pantry by collecting non-perishables in its entryway throughout the year. The food collection process was interrupted entirely because of COVID-19. To make up for lost time and donations, the church scheduled a food drive. The church and surrounding communities were obviously ready to pitch in and help! The drive succeeded beyond expectations collecting 605 lbs. of food and $1000. This accomplishment can be attributed, in no small part, to the inspiration of the late Paul Gauthier, church member and longtime advocate for those in need. It was a satisfying way to honor Paul, help our neighbors and work together as a church family at a time when many are feeling isolated. First Church extends a heartfelt thanks to all who helped make this project a success. The First Church congregation welcomes all to attend Sunday worship service on the church Facebook page (First Congregational Church Of Kennebunkport) which begins at 9:30 a.m. The service will also be posted on www.firstchurchkport.org and YouTube for viewing any time.
York County Shelter Food Pantry received a $1,000 check and 605 pounds of food from First Congregational Church of Kennebunkport, the result of the church food drive.
MARR’s Training Portal Launched with Help from Kennebunk Savings Grant PORTLAND Kennebunk Savings was pleased to award a $5,000 grant to the Maine Association of Recovery Residences (MARR) for the development of an online training portal and courses for peer recovery supports. “Our friends at MARR like to say that ‘recovery is contagious.’ And the efficacy of peer-based recovery supports is strongly supported by the data,” said Bradford C. Paige, the bank’s
Sig Bo n O nu n s!
President and CEO. A person with experience navigating their own recovery can in turn be a great help to others seeking it. According to the Recovery Research Institute, people in recovery with these “peer supports” experienced improved relationships with medical providers, reduced rates of relapse, increased satisfaction with overall treatment, and increased treatment retention. An important peer role is that of the peer leader, sometimes referred to as a “House Manager.” Typically, a person in a recovery residence develops naturally and gradually into such a lead-
VA Maine Healthcare System Begins COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution AUGUSTA VA Maine Healthcare System will begin COVID-19 vaccination with the Moderna vaccine following the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Emergency Use Authorization for this vaccine. “VA Maine is eager to offer the Moderna COVID19 vaccine to health care personnel and community living center residents,” said Medical Center Director, Tracye B. Davis. “Receiving the vaccine is like having hope delivered. As vaccine supplies increase, our ultimate goal is to offer vaccination to all veterans and employees who want to be vaccinated.” VA Maine Healthcare System is one of 113 VA Medical Centers across the country to receive the first limited supply of the Moderna COVID19 vaccine. Sites were identified based on need for the vaccine according to CDC’s 1A prioritization and capacity to store the vaccine at -20 degrees C.
The vaccine was 94 percent effective in clinical trials in preventing COVID-19 disease. The vaccine is administered in two doses, 28 days apart. The side effects appear similar to those of other vaccines and are short-lived. Thirty-seven medical centers began offering the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to health care personnel and Veterans on December 14. Fifteen additional VA facilities will receive an allocation of the vaccine the week of December 21. Even after receiving COVID-19 vaccination, employees and Veterans should continue wearing face coverings, practicing physical distancing and washing hands often. As vaccines become available for more groups of Veterans, VA care teams will reach out to eligible Veterans to schedule vaccinations. There is no need to preregister or come to a facility to sign up.
ership role among a population, and learns on the job. But with their new training program, the first course of which is now available, MARR hopes to help aspiring peer leaders get a jump on the roles and responsibilities of such a position. “We love empowering people to lead,” said Paige. “We’ve been coming at substance
use disorders from many angles for the last several years, and we get particularly excited about programs which spread critical knowledge and experience among the people who can then directly apply that knowledge in their community.” Kennebunk Savings’ Spotlight Fund focuses a portion of their charitable giving toward alleviating a single community issue. In 2020, the bank has committed to donating $150,000 to programs aimed at community education and reducing barriers to social determinants of health for those in recovery from substance use disorder. MARR’s first training course, “So You Want to Become a Peer Leader in a Recovery Residence,” is geared at persons currently living in a recovery residence interested in becoming or better understanding and appreciating the role of peer leader. It covers the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed, and several experienced Peer Leaders share their personal thoughts and feelings. Future programs will cover specifics like the administration of naloxone, mental health first aid, and proper testing for alcohol and drugs. Health & Fitness YCCA To Distrubute Vaccine to EMS Providers ALFRED The York County Chiefs Association (YCCA) is pleased to announce it will take an active role, in collaboration with numerous partner agencies, in distributing the COVID-19 vaccine, beginning with emergency medical service (EMS) providers. In partnership with the State of Maine, Maine Emergency Medical Services, the fire and rescue departments of York County and York County EMA, the York County Chiefs Association is working to ensure that EMS providers

This remains an extremely challenging time for us and for our dedicated caregivers; as it is for all hospitals and long term care facilities, due to COVID-19’s higher level of community spread. Healthcare providers will face an ongoing struggle with the virus, and with outbreaks, until the community prevalence of this virus decreases, or until vaccines become widely available.” Additionally and as planned at 8 a.m. yesterday, the hospital was pleased to join in the country-wide vaccination of its frontline caregivers. With 800 doses of the recently “approved for emergency use” Moderna COVID19 vaccine arriving Monday, York Hospital’s Vaccination Implementation team was ready to inoculate staff who provide patient care in the highest risk situations, including our ED, ICU and Inpatient Adult Health units. York Hospital Pharmacy Director, Marian Reilly, RPh and YH Physician Practice Resource Nurse, Tracy Colburn, RN agreed, “This implementation has been both exciting and rewarding. Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Hubert Linwood Reeves, 93 WELLS -– Hubert Linwood Reeves of Tatnic Road, was called home to be with his Lord, Sunday, March 15, 2020. He was born October 20, 1927 in Wells at his family farm to John and Lois (Bedell) Reeves; the fourth of nine children. He attended Wells Schools and enlisted in the United States Army in 1945. He married Pauline Gordon on August 2, 1947; married 52 years and raised three children. Linwood was the eldest member and Deacon of the South Berwick and Wells Christian Church. He and his wife were faithful servants to the Lord throughout their lives. Linwood worked for over 43 years at Hussey Seating Company and was the first person to be given the position of Supervisor. He enjoyed many years spending time at his son’s campground on Chesuncook Lake, hunting and fishing. THANK YOU ST. JUDE: May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world now and forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, helper of the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer 9 times a day, by the 9th day your prayers will be answered. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised and done.

Due to his childhood passion for flying, Linwood earned his pilot’s license at the Sanford Airport. He owned his own plane and enjoyed flying with his brother Paul. He was a selftaught guitarist; always singing country and gospel music with a special request for “The Old Tin Cup.” Linwood always took the opportunity to share his faith not only with his family but with everyone he met. He will be dearly missed by his children, Linwood Peter and Pamela Reeves; Beverly and Wayne Hasty of South Berwick; Billy and Sandra Reeves of Millinocket; nine grandchildren, Jill Streeter, Bobbie Reeves, Corenna Reeves, Candice and Michael Gagnon, Karie and Thomas Lee, Kelly and Julian Black, Ryan and Jennifer Reeves, Kimberly and Benjamin Bate, Jason Hasty and Jennifer Wheeler; 14 great-grandchildren, Cody, Brody Aliyah, Zackery, Tyler, Finson, Ashtin, Gavin, Ava, Kayla, Madison, Victoria, Coralena and Wesley. Linwood was pre-deceased by his wife Pauline; siblings, Herbert, Paul, Forest, Stanley, Lois and Wayne Reeves, and Ruth Welch; daughter-in-law Janet (Coombs) Reeves; and great-grandsons, John and Leo. A Celebration of Life was held on March 21 at the South Berwick and Wells Christian Church, 612 Emery’s Bridge Road, South Berwick. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South Berwick and Wells Christian Church, 90 Thurrell Road, South Berwick, ME 03908. Arrangements entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home in North Berwick. Condolences may be expressed at www.johnsonfuneralhomeme.com. ...PPE from page 15 Rep. Pingree. ~ Sports & Classifieds ~ Eliot Rower Excels at McGill University ELIOT The cancellation of fall varsity sports due to the coronavirus pandemic, has created an opportunity for Canada’s McGill University to profile two student-athletes every week. Meet rower Katherine Mercer of Eliot (shown on right in photo). A 21-year-old arts senior, her academic concentration is Ecological Determinants of Health in Society. “It’s been a pretty crazy year,” says Mercer, who spent the fall semester at her studio apartment in the McGill student ghetto but just returned home to the U.S. – after receiving a negative result on a COVID-19 test – for the holidays. For the uninitiated, rowing is not a sport for night owls. “It’s like a part-time job that involves about 30 hours a week,” says Mercer, who plans on returning for a fifth year next fall in order to have another season of competitive rowing. “We normally have to wake up around 5 a.m. in order to get to the basin. We return from practice around 8:30 a.m., then it’s off to class and we usually (regroup) for a second practice in the late afternoon. And that’s every day. Then we typically have five weekends of travel to our meets. In the off-season, I still train twice a day but it’s easier ...HAVEN from page 18 memories your children will cherish. because everything is in the (Currie) gym, near where we’re all living, so there is no travel time to the basin.” The 2020 rowing season was supposed to be a promising one for Mercer, who was coming off a solid 2019 campaign, which began with a gold medal performance in the women’s double (with teammate Eddy Taguedong) at the season-opening Head of the Rideau regatta in Ottawa, and was capped by a race victory in the B-final at the OUA championships on the Royal Henley course near St. Catharines, Ontario. This year, she was expecting to be in a competitive lightweight eight racing shell but the crew season was cancelled and the team couldn’t hold tryouts and were unable to recruit new members, typically walk-ons from the campus. “It was disappointing not to row (at meets) in the fall because we had a really good plan for the women’s team this year and were excited about that. We also had a spring race planned and that has been cancelled as well… A bunch of us rowed in single boats, pretty much every day, at the Montreal Rowing Club. Right now, there are ergometers (rowing machines) set up at the (Olympic rowing) basin and we’ve been able to train there with some social distancing guidelines. I also have an “erg” at home with me here in Maine and a (station-

It’s really weird not seeing the entire team on a daily basis because we are a very close group and normally spend a lot of time together, especially in the fall. However, I do see a few of them because we had morning training sessions and would do some socially-distanced running in the park. We would also do some training sessions on Zoom.” Mercer opted to study at McGill in a roundabout way. “I graduated from (Marshwood) high school a year early and ended up taking a gap year,” recalled Mercer. “I took a French program in Quebec City and kind of fell in love with Quebec. At that time, I was applying to various colleges (in the U.S.) and decided to look up the options here. Coming from a small town and going to a big city, I was expecting not to know anybody and initially I felt a little intimidated by the size but McGill is such a tight-knit community, especially in Athletics, that I found, anywhere I went, I ran into people that I knew and

Annual Lobster Dip/Roll for Special Olympics Going Virtual STATEWIDE Due to the pandemic, most Special Olympics Maine programs and fundraisers have been suspended and too many Special Olympics athletes remain on the sidelines. But even though athletes are not on the field, Special Olympics Maine continues to engage participants through virtual activities that focus on physical fitness, healthy habits and mental health while also providing a social platform where athletes, unified partners, coaches and volunteers can stay connected. Therefor, the annual Lobster Dip/Roll for Special Olympics Maine scheduled for January 1, 2021 will now be virtual. Instead of coming to the beach for a chilly New Year’s dip on New Year’s Day, participants can support Special Olympics Maine by taking a roll from the safety of their own homes! Participants can roll in their front yard, backyard, on a porch or patio. Get the entire family to roll! Add a water balloon fight or squirt each other there were always people that I recognized on campus, so it feels much smaller than it really is. I would really like to work for an NGO (nongovernmental organization) or perhaps the United Nations, doing something with the environment or public health.”
