Berwick Students Fulfill Toy Wishes for Twenty Years SOUTH BERWICK – For twenty years, Berwick Academy students have participated in the Toys for Tots program, raising money during Upper School assembly and using the funds to purchase gifts for local children in need. This year, our students set a record by raising $2400, enough to fulfill eight of the twenty-four requests from the stars on the tree in downtown South Berwick. Led by Upper School history teacher Brad Fletcher, students raise money, shop for toys, wrap them in Brad’s classroom, and deliver them to the Town Office. The town itself has ex-

pressed gratitude to Berwick’s participation in the program, “Without Berwick, we would have a much harder and bigger

job to fill the need for toys. For Brad, this activity is more than just helping children in need; it is also a great reflec-

tion of the students’ character and their commitment to community. “When we were buying toys at Toys “R Us a few years

ago, a woman approached me, asking who we were and what we were doing. I explained, and she said that she wanted her kids to grow up to be like our kids. It was a great moment. Founded in 1791, Berwick Academy is an independent, coeducational day school located in South Berwick, Maine. For over 200 years, the Academy has pursued its mission of promoting “Virtue and Useful Knowledge through a purposeful blend of strong academics, arts, and athletics. Berwick serves nearly 600 students in grades PK-12 from the seacoast area of southern Maine, New Hampshire, and northeastern Massachusetts.

STATEWIDE – Senator Ron Collins (RYork) would like to invite local students to take part in the Senate’s honorary page program during the first session of the 127th Legislature, which convenes in January. As an honorary page, students take part in the legislative session by distributing documents and assisting legislators. “Serving as an honorary page is an excellent way for students to get a close-up, hands-on understanding of state government, said Sen. Collins. “They are able to get to know the folks who represent them, and gain a new level of enthusiasm for civic engagement. Parents or teachers can call the Senate Majority Office at 207287-1505 to sign up a student or group of students. Please have the name, grade, hometown, and school name for each student. In addition, have in mind a few different dates that would work well. For January and February, the Senate will largely be in session only on Tuesdays and Thursdays with more days of the week added in March, April, and May. ...PLUNGE from page 1 community to bring an end to domestic violence in York County by providing essential support and safety planning services to individuals whose lives are affected by domestic violence and abuse. program and the apprenticeship program. Bonnie Bushnell, current Director of apprenticeships, explained the process. Students can work in their apprenticeship for one or two semesters and earn credit. They need to come to her with an idea of a business with which they would like to work. It is their job to contact that business and secure a mentor there. They are responsible for showing up every other day at the apprenticeship, being fully involved there, and keeping a daily journal in which they record the activities they do. Bushnell reads the journals, stays in touch with students and observes them in their apprenticeship at least once per semester. She requires a positive evaluation from the mentors with which the students work. Senior David Parker, interested in sports management as a career, works in an apprenticeship with the Portland Pirates hockey team. He has assisted the equipment manager in a diversity of jobs, having painted the walls of the equipment storage room, cleaned equipment, put visors on helmets, and helped transport equipment from away games back to Portland. Parker has learned through direct experience how many things are involved in getting a team ready for a season. Emily Ferrick visits Kennebunk Elementary School every other day in her apprenticeship. She works in a first grade classroom with her mentor, teacher Sharon Sirois. When Ferrick steps into the classroom she does whatever is needed that day, from reading to groups of kids to helping individual students with subjects they might be struggling with. “I wanted to see what it was like to be in the classroom with the kids, to be certain I was choosing the right college major and to gain some experience See INTERN page 9...

~ News ~ MSAD 60 Backpack Program Helps Chronically Hungry Students

BERWICK/NORTH BERWICK/LEBANON An ambitious effort is underway in Maine’s S.A.D. 60 to help alleviate child hunger by providing local, needy children with nutritious and easy to prepare food at times when other resources are not available, such as weekends and school vacations. Spearheaded by teacher Andrew Elwell and his students at the Mary Hurd Academy in North Berwick, the MSAD 60 Backpack Program is already on its way to becoming a reality. In collaboration with parent volunteers, school staff and administration, Elwell and his students have been busy collecting, sorting, and packing bags with food to provide for approximately 100 identified students in MSAD 60, which includes the towns of Berwick, North Berwick and Lebanon, Maine. The first distribution of backpacks is anticipated prior to the December holiday

break. Thereafter, the MSAD 60 Backpack Program will distribute bags monthly, and when resources allow, weekly. According to the organization Feeding America, the State of Maine has the highest rate of childhood food insecurity in all of New England, with nearly 25 percent of all Maine children affected. This means that 1 in every 4 Maine children frequently worry about where their next meal is going to come from, and whether or not it will be enough. Chronic hunger affects children’s ability to function at home and at school and can lead to excessive absences due to sickness, aggressive or withdrawn behaviors, and an inability to concentrate. In order for this program to succeed, the MSAD 60 Backpack Program is seeking help from the community in the form of monetary donations and food (canned – no glass,

simple to prepare items such as soups, canned fruits and vegetables, instant oatmeal, cereal bars, peanut butter, etc.). Donation drop boxes built by students are located at the Eric L. Knowlton School in Berwick, the Hanson School in Lebanon, Noble High School, and at the MSAD 60 Central Office located at 21 Main Street, 3rd Floor in North Berwick. Monetary donations made payable to the Mary Hurd Backpack Program are also greatly appreciated, and will allow the program to partner with food banks, local merchants and other organizations to purchase foods in bulk and stretch your donation dollars. Genealogy Group Meets On Saturday, Jan. 3 at 10 a.m., Pam Eagleson, CG will present "Confronting Conflicting Evidence. In genealogical work it's almost a given that researchers will encounter conflicting evidence. This lecture examines ways to analyze and resolve such evidence. "Genealogy is my passion and I feel fortunate to be able to follow it wherever it takes me. I teach, lecture and write and enjoy mentoring beginning genealogists. Dividing my time between personal research focusing on the mid-Atlantic, mid-West and Germany, and client work in New England, I utilize the resources of several Maine, New England and national repositories."

Celebrate the New Year with First Day Hikes at Maine State Parks STATEWIDE The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s Bureau of Parks and Lands (MDACF) will host free, guided hikes in five state parks on New Year’s Day as part of America's State Parks First Day Hikes initiative. That initiative, held in all 50 states, offers individuals and families an opportunity to begin the New Year rejuvenating and connecting with the outdoors by taking a healthy hike on January 1, 2015 at a state park close to home. “Last year, nearly 5 and a

half million people visited Maine during the winter season, many to enjoy the outdoors,” said Governor LePage. “We have some of the best skiing in New England and Maine is the premiere snowmobiling destination in the eastern US. We also have some of the most beautiful State Parks, which remain open all-year long. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, Can I download Windows 8.1 on my computer which has Windows XP on it? I read your newsletter every time I get it in my e-mail. Thanks, Sonny Dear Sonny, The answer to your question is, it depends. Actually, it depends on a couple of different things. First, does your XP computer have enough hardware power to run Windows 8.1. If your computer is more than 4 or 5 years old, chances are it does not. According to Microsoft's website, you need AT LEAST a 1 ghz processor, 2 GB of RAM and 20GB hard drive space along with a graphics card that supports DirectX 9 or greater. These are the minimum requirements to run Windows 8.1 and while it will run, if your system just barely meets these requirements, it will run very slowly and probably be a bit frustrating for you. If your system does have the hardware power to run Windows 8.1, you still can't

just download and install it, you have to purchase it. Since prices for Windows 8.1 range from over $90. to $150, you have to take that into consideration when deciding if you want to upgrade or purchase a new computer. In addition, you will need to backup your files, since upgrading from XP to 8 requires a clean installation. This means you won't be able to keep and files, settings or programs when you upgrade. I hope this helps you as you transition from your old XP computer to Windows 8.1. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a 3 year old HP laptop with Intel I-7, a 2 year old desk top with Intel I-5 and a 2 year old HP Officejet 6700 all in one printer. Both computers are connected wirelessly to the printer and for 95 percent of the time, everything is fine. However, every 5 or 6 months, the printer goes offline all by itself and I am unable to print. In the past a friend was able to come over and resolve the issue within

Dear Computer Lady, I'm new to this computer stuff. I would like to find out what is an icon, what is a cookie, URL, what does default mean? How can I educate myself? Hope u can steer me. thanks, Margaret

when you double click on it. Another icon example is the blue e which leads to Internet Explorer. A cookie is a small text file that helps websites remember your settings. You really don't need to worry about cookies, and you will not see them in your normal computer usage. A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is a unique address for a file on the internet. For example, if you want to go to Google, you could type in their URL (http:// google.com) to get to their website. Default means the choice that is made if you don't specify a different choice. A good example would be if you have several printers hooked up to your computer. One printer is set as the default printer. When you click print, the default printer is automatically chosen, and unless you select a different one, your document will print on the default printer. A good place to start learning about your computer (besides my website at www.asktcl.com) is actually a Goodwill Community Foundation site at www.gcflearnfree. org/computerbasics. Hope this helps you get started. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, Two or three years ago you gave us one of he best free dictionaries that I have found. You pulled it up by depressing the ctrl key and right clicking with

a matter of minutes and some computer strokes. Then I would be OK for 5 or 6 more months. Unfortunately, he never left me his procedure in writing. I have gone on HP's web site, on You Tube, etc. with no success. The responses on You Tube seem to indicate this is somewhat common. Can you help? Thank you in advance. Dave S Dear Dave, This is a fairly common problem with some printers. I am usually able to fix it by reinstalling the printer. Just get out the disk that came with the printer and run the installation program again. Sometimes, you need to remove the printer from the control panel first, but not always. This might not be the exact method your friend used, but this is the easiest method to use. Elizabeth

I always like to have a good dictionary on hand, in fact, one of the things I love about my Amazon kindle is the ability to easily look up any word in whatever book I am reading. The new version 7 of WordWeb gives me that ability on my computer as well. All you have to do is hold down the Ctrl Key on your keyboard, and right click on a word, and the definition pops right up on my computer screen. This is a great program, that I love to use. A “Quiet Hour” Writers Group SOUTH BERWICK In 1908 Sarah Orne Jewett wrote to her friend and budding author Willa Cather, “Do not hurry too fast in these early winter days - a quiet hour is worth more to you than anything you can do in it.” She advised her friend to “keep and guard and mature your force, and above all, have time and quiet to perfect your work.” On the first Monday of each month, beginning at 7:30 p.m. on January 5 through May

...INTERN from page 4 in the field,” explained Ferrick. “Mrs. Sirois has taught me that teachers need to have a tremendous amount of enthusiasm, energy and patience. Whether I become a teacher or not I will try to carry with me such enthusiasm for any job.” Sydney Douston is taking advantage of two senior options. She is enrolled in an Architecture class at York County Community College and apprentices with a designer at Douston Construction and independent architect David Graham. Her apprenticeship has, in part, followed the syllabus for her Architecture class, her mentors together helping her to go into more detail on class topics like design elements and spatial planning. Douston’s mentors also meet with her to study designs

for their building projects. Right now they have assigned her the job of creating her own dream house. They have given her a virtual piece of land, a budget and a deadline. Sydney believes she has learned more in the apprenticeship than she could learn in a classroom. “My mentor designer and architect show me how they work and how they think. It’s hands on.” Seniors apprenticeships span a broad variety of occupations including Lawyer and Law Enforcement areas, Horse Therapy, Radiology and Digital Video. The list continues to expand as students choose areas of interest. The program has generated a lot of excitement at Kennebunk High School and continues encourage students to learn beyond the classroom.

WELLS – Art exhibit “Color, Light, Cows” by Wells artist, Claire Bigbee will be on exhibit at Daunis Fine Handmade Jewelry, 616 Congress St. in Portland. The opening and artist reception will be at the Jan. 2 Art Walk and the exhibit will continue through March 3. “A colorist of atmospheric depiction, this semi-abstract artist demonstrates her command of light in an intriguing and confrontational way. Cows, birds. The fields and marshes

surrounding the ocean and land in southern Maine are subjects of her paintings. She strives to enhance each painting using flat areas of pure vivid color to evoke an emotional feeling.” Bigbee paints in her studio and lives in Wells. Epiphany Concert at Christ Church KENNEBUNK On Epiphany Sunday, January 4, at 2 p.m., Christ Church will close out the Christmas season with a joyful concert of Christmas favorites and singalong caroling. Celebrated on January 6, the "twelfth day of Christmas" we sing about in "A Partirdge in a Pear Tree," the Epiphany celebration remembers the three Magi's visit to the Christ child, affirming his divinity. The name "Epiphany" comes from the Greek word Epiphania, and means "to show, make known, or reveal." Organist and pianist “Maestro” Warren King will accompany several virtuoso musicians - flutist Rachael Barter, violinist Margaret Hopkins, and trumpeter Thomas Kremser. The program will include opportunities for sing-along carols. Suggested donation for the concert is $12; $8 for seniors and children, or whatever one chooses to give. Young children are welcome at no charge. Warren King is Music Director at Christ Church and has been presenting concerts in various genres throughout the Kennebunks and beyond since his 2004 arrival in Maine. Along with his musical talent, King brings great energy and joy to everything he does. There is always an element of fun to his concerts. As leader of the band “Coastal Sound,” he provides upbeat dance music for wedding receptions, anniversary parties, and public events; and as half of the duo “Top-Hatz,” he brings music of the 1920’s-1950’s to area seniors, keeping their toes tapping and hands clapping. For more about King and his musical adventures, see www.livemusicmaine.com. Accomplished flutist Rachael Barter is a native of Kennebunk, mother to two young daughters, and she manages a full schedule of flute students in her private studio. Her students have been invited to participate in prestigious musical events at the New England Conservatory of Music, as well as top-level venues throughout Maine. Master trumpeter Thomas

Kremser was born and raised in Pennsylvania. He grew up in the Moravian Church, where he studied trumpet from the age of ten. Currently, Thomas shares his gifts with several local churches, as well as performing for weddings, musicals and other events. He is a founding member of the Seacoast Brass; a local brass ensemble. Christ Church is a Federated congregation, United Methodist Church and United Church of Christ. Regular Morning Worship is at 10 a.m. Sunday morning. For more information, visit www.christchurchkennebunk. org or the office at 6 Dane Street, or call 207-985-4494.

BUSINESS & FINANCE One Easy Decision On “Make Up Your Mind Dayâ€? STATEWIDE On December 31, the nation celebrates National Make Up Your Mind Day. The timing is perfect to coincide with those pesky New Year’s resolutions. Some decisions are big and you might need time to plan before you make up your mind. Other decisions are small, but they matter all the same. You might say to yourself, “Someday‌ I’ll dust behind the television. But getting back there is a pain and have you seen the spaghetti of power cords?â€? You might say to your-

self, “Someday‌ I’ll stop eating that one cookie a day. Someday‌ someday‌â€? But that one cookie a day could save you more than a thousand calories a week — depending on the cookie. That could potentially allow you to lose a pound of body weight a month. But hey, cookies are good. And it’s the holidays, so everyone you visit is offering up fresh-baked cookies! We all have our own personal somedays. Just out of reach. Just over the horizon. But you don’t have to wait for someday to plan for your retirement or make up your mind to sign up

for your own personal my Social Security account. Planning for your retirement is one of the most important things you will do in your life and we’ve made that decision as easy as pie. (That’s something else you may want to give up someday!) Put the cookie — or piece of pie — aside and go to www.socialsecurity.gov/ myaccount to create your personal account. It only takes a few minutes. Once you’ve made that decision, life gets a little easier. It really does. When signing up for my Social Security, you can see whether you’ve earned enough credits to apply for Social Secu-

rity benefits and verify that your earnings history is correct. It’s very important that you verify your earnings, because we base your future Social Security retirement benefits on your lifetime

earnings. You can also estimate how much money you will receive when you start collecting cash benefits. If you’re already reSee ACCOUNT page 30...

...WORK from page 10 greatest opportunity lies in bridging that disconnect. The inherent challenges of continually enhancing the quality of Maine’s workforce require a focused effort by all stakeholders. Broadly, the recommendations in “Preparing Maine’s Workforce do not call for the creation of new infrastructure and organization, but for tighter alignment and coordination of efforts under five key themes: stakeholder collaboration and integration; targeted marketing; incentives to catalyze individual and institutional behaviors; competencies and workplace readiness; and, metrics and data-driven decision making. “MDF’s strategic focus is a productive workforce that is educated, healthy, innovative, and engaged in the economy and their community, said Harold Clossey, president and CEO of the Maine Develop-

ment Foundation. “Ensuring that we have enough skilled workers for the jobs of today and tomorrow is critical to Maine’s economic growth. “There is already some excellent work being done in this area by some great organizations, said Ryan Neale, program director at the Maine Development Foundation. “We’ve had the opportunity to work with many of them in developing this report and look forward to moving these efforts forward in the future. Funding for the workforce reports was provided by Kaplan University, the Maine Community Foundation, Unum, Saint Joseph’s College of Maine, the University of New England, Anthem BlueCross BlueShield in Maine, Bangor Savings Bank, and Hannaford. As you start to finalize your list of New Year’s Resolutions, don’t forget to make the commitment to live a healthier lifestyle by learning more about how your body functions. And, there’s no better way to start than getting to know your endocrine system. Made up of a network of intricate glands that secrete hormones into the bloodstream, the endocrine system impacts almost every aspect of your body functions, from how well you sleep, to how your body grows and develops, to digestion, handling your stress levels, and even how energetic you feel each day. After all, like the old adage goes: knowledge is power. Read on to learn more about the important functions of your endocrine system. Knowing how your body works is the first step in learning how to stay health

gland, this gland is no larger than a pea but highly influences other organs in the body, and is vital to overall health. Some of its functions include controlling growth in children, stimulating milk production in nursing women, sexual development in teens, helping you handle stress, adjusting metabolic rate, and regulating estrogen levels in women and testosterone in men

1. Pituitary gland Referred to as the master

4. Pineal gland Located deep in the center of the brain, this gland releases melatonin, a hormone that helps the body recognize when to go to sleep. It also influences the body’s reproductive hormones and conversion of nervous system signals to endocrine signals

2. Adrenal gland This gland helps to maintain normal blood pressure and sugar levels, and allow optimal response to stress. 3. Pancreas This gland is located in the abdomen behind the stomach, and works to keep the body supplied with fuel for energy by maintaining a healthy level of sugar in the bloodstream and assisting with digestion.

5. Thymus gland This gland is located behind the breastbone and produces substances that stimulate development of antibodies that control the body’s immunity and produce T-lymphocytes (T cells) or white blood cells that help fight off bacteria, viruses, and abnormal cell growth or cancer. The thymus is special in that, unlike most organs, it is at its largest in children. Once you reach puberty, the thymus starts to slowly shrink and become replaced by fat. Fortunately, the thymus produces all of your T cells by the time you reach

puberty 6. Thyroid gland Butterfly-shaped, this gland is located in the front of the neck. The primary function of this gland is to create two iodine-rich hormones – T3 and T 4 – which help regulate blood pressure, body temperature, energy level, heart rate, metabolism and even how your body works with other hormones. 7. Parathyroid glands Located behind the thyroid gland and the size of a grain of rice, the body’s four parathyroid glands regulate and monitor the calcium levels in blood – important for proper bone development, as well as maintenance of bone strength. 8. Ovaries Found in women, the ovaries have two functions: to produce eggs for fertilization and create the reproductive hormones, estrogen and progesterone, which help regulate a women’s menstrual cycle and prepare the lining of the uterus for pregnancy 9. Testicles Found in men, the testicles produce testosterone, which stimulates sex drive and promotes sexual development in men including body and facial hair. Testosterone also increases muscle strength and bone mass. The testicles also produce sperm under the influence of the testosterone and pituitary hormones. The glands that make up the endocrine system help control many important body functions and are essential for good health. Health & Fitness New Year’s Resolution from The Skin Cancer Foundation: Don’t Tan The new year is around the corner, and with it comes the opportunity to start fresh and ditch unhealthy habits. The Skin Cancer Foundation encourages everyone to resolve to stop tanning in the New Year. Avoiding tanning is more important than ever since tanning bed use, particularly among young people, is an alarmingly widespread behavior- in the U.S., over 35 percent of adults and 55 percent of college students have tanned indoors. This anti-tanning message is particularly relevant for college students. Millions of college students nationwide have immediate access to indoor tanning salons. According to a recent study, nearly half of the nation's top colleges offer indoor tanning facilities on or near campus despite the definitive link between indoor tanning and the development of skin cancer. "While indoor tanning may seem like an easy way to achieve glowing skin, it comes with consequences," said Perry Robins, MD, President of The Skin Cancer Foundation. "It causes permanent damage and plays a significant role in the development of skin cancer, so getting in a tanning bed can put your life in danger." UV radiation, both from the sun and through using a tanning bed, is directly linked to skin cancer-just one indoor tanning session before the age of 35 increases melanoma risk by 75 percent. One session also increases the risk of the basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma by 29 percent and 67 percent, respectively. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the two most common forms of skin cancer. Whether "laying out" or visiting a tanning salon, there is no such thing as safe tan. In addition to increasing skin cancer risk, tanning leads to premature skin aging, including wrinkles, leathery skin and age spots. The Skin Cancer Foundation advocates embracing one's natural skin tone and its Go With Your Own Glow™ campaign encourages women to love and protect their skin, whatever its natural hue. However, those who can't resist the bronzed look but won't sacrifice their health to achieve it should consider sunless UV-free tanners. They are available in many different formulations, including creams, lotions, gels,

Health & Fitness Consider Safe Medicine Storage

Over 60,000 children every year end up in hospital ERs because they have ingest-

ed medicine that was not properly stored. Most of these incidents happen in the home. Here are

a few tips to keep children safe and healthy, and medicines out of reach.

Never store vitamins or medicine where children can reach them. Find a safe spot and return your bottles to that same spot after every use. Children love to explore, climb, and put objects in their mouths. It only takes a few seconds when your back is turned for something to happen. Find an area in your home that is out of reach and out of sight. After every use, make sure you return bottles to the same safe spot. Talk to your children about medicine safety. Never call it “candy” or any other term that may appeal to children. Have a basic, age-appropriate conversation about what medicine is, what it does, and that you must be the one to administer it. Make sure guests know about placing medicine “up and away.” Guests may forget that they have medicine in purses, coats, and other places that could be easy for children to access. Remind them and offer to store bottles in your safe spot during

their visit. Despite safety measures, sometimes accidents happen. Make sure you have the Poison Help number (1-800-222-1222) programmed into your cell phone and leave the number with any babysitters or family members who will be caring for your children. They are available to help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For more information about safe medicine storage, please contact Michelle Mason at mmason@yorkhospital.com or 207-351-2669. Choose To Be Healthy is a community health coalition in Southern York County. Coalition members and partners work to create a culture of health living. The coalition supports policies and community changes that promote tobacco and drug free environments, eating well, and active living. Funding comes from the federal Drug Free Communities program, the Maine Office of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services, and tobacco settlement money from the Fund for a Healthy Maine. Additional support comes from York Hospital and local and state grants. For more information, visit www. ctbh.org and the Choose To Be Healthy Facebook page.

Safe Haven Humane Society

WELLS Last Saturday’s Open House was a great success. Santa was a big hit! Customers found great bargains as they shopped for our great cause. Everyone wore smiles as they enjoyed the holiday refreshments and good cheer. With everything else happening at our open house, Santa still made time to listen to the Christmas wishes of our kitties. Each one asked Santa for the same thing: a home of their own, and humans to love them. Please adopt from Safe Haven and become a part of our happy No-Kill family! Gary and Bonnie Everbeck are Safe Haven’s newest “Top Cats, contributing $5,000 toward our building fund and choosing which room will bear their tribute plaque. Gary, owner of “All Kinds of Signs in Peabody, MA, and Bonnie, who is secretary of Safe Haven’s Capital Campaign, have contributed generously all along. They’ve not only provided financial support, but Gary has been handson, helping re-build and renovate our new adoption center with Rex Lambert, our contractor/campaign chairman/angel. Bonnie has not only hosted board meetings at their Wells condo but also they drive from Peabody to Wells twice weekly to show their support and lent their capable hands. Bella and Barney, two kitties adopted from Safe Haven, have also become “Top Cats by pledging $5,000 to Safe Haven’s capital fund. Their mom, who prefers to remain anonymous, says she knows our new adoption center will help other kitties find wonderful lives, just like Bella and Barney did. She insists that this generous contribution is actually from her kitties, with lots of love. Thanks to all three of them for their generosity and kindness.

Put your name on our adoption center! Every window in our adoption center is available for naming rights for a $125 donation. Imagine how much sunshine and stimulation your contribution will provide Safe Haven kitties. Please consider sending a check now and let the world see your support for our no-kill cause! If we’re going to reach our goal of moving into our new center by the end of February, we really need your financial support now. We need $16,000 to buy a new heating system and supplies to keep the hammers swinging and the drywall hanging. Please consider a donation so we can reach our goal. Your contributions, no matter the size, can be mailed to PO Box 1842, Wells 04090, or donate online at SafeHavenHumaneSociety.org.

Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK – Meet Acorn Acorn is a 1-year-old Pit Bull Mix who is an active, energetic boy who can’t help but be happy and loving, even if he is a little in your face about it. He is very social and outgoing, though he will need help polishing his manners and obedience skills. Because of this, we will be requiring he attend the obedience course we offer at the shelter. His adopter will pay for the course at the time of his adoption, and then after Acorn has completed the 6-week course, the class fee will be refunded. He would be happy to share a new home with other dogs, dog savvy cats, and rugged children who can handle his energetic nature. Meet Pounce Pounce is a 4-year-old short-haired cat. Don’t fret about the name, the last thing this fellow would do is pounce all over you or furniture. In fact, Pounce is quite the scaredy cat. Pounce can get quite overwhelmed in new surroundings and with new people. However, his means of seeking comfort is by burrowing into the nearest area or person, making him an inadvertently great snuggler. After a little while, Pounce will come out of his shell and enjoy

his surroundings and all those who visit him. He would be happy to share a new home with other feline friends. Meet J.P. J.P., an adult Californian rabbit, an adorable gal who enjoys getting visits from people. She is quite fluffy and a joy to lavish attention on. She would love to find a new home where she can get a habitat filled with grass, toys, treats, and regular attention from her people. That would make her the happiest rabbit she can be. She has spent some time on a foster farm, so she is used to living in a horse barn. J.P. recently had a harmless cyst removed from her back, so she still has some visible stitches. Calendar of Events January 6 - Furry Tales, Stories and Adventure Hour Begins and continues every Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. Preschoolers are invited to discover the exciting world of animals with stories, playtime, crafts, songs, movement and animal time. The event is free, though any donations are appreciated. January 24 - The Mobile Adoption Team will bring adoptable dogs to the Portland Planet Dog Store on January 24, 2015 from Noon – 2 p.m. The store is located at 211 Marginal Way.

Born in Ogunquit, ME on June 17, 1932, he was a son of the late Erborn and Lizzie (Martin) Hilton. Fred met and married his loving wife Phyllis of 61 years and together they built a home and raised a family in York Beach. As a young man, Fred worked at Chases Garage for many years as one of the heavy equipment mechanics for Seward Construction, retiring in 1989. Later in life Frederick enjoyed time with his family at their home or at camp on Swan Pond in Lyman. He loved to be with his family, and most recently he and his wife were

daily visitors to the Nubble Lighthouse. ~ Sports ~ Varsity Hockey Berwick Academy EXETER ACAD. – Dec. 18 The Berwick Academy boys varsity hockey team (3-5) lost a tightly contested game against New England Prep School powerhouse Exeter Academy (10-0) on Thursday. Exeter built a 3-0 lead midway through the second period, but Berwick answered back with a pair of their own. It was Byron Welch banging home a rebound after a strong net drive from Brent Philips, and then it was Conor Tully burying one of his own after Connor Ronan took it hard to the net. Midway through the final period, Berwick finally managed to tie the game on a goal from Phillips, but with Exeter on their heels, the hosts were put on the power-play. With just 33 seconds remaining in the game, a shot from the point eluded Joey Lazzaro, who was tremendous on the evening turning away 36 shots, giving Exeter the 4-3 win. Berwick heads into break, but will return to the ice over the New Year’s holiday at a tournament at Tabor Academy.

PINGREE SCHOOL – Dec. 21 The Berwick Academy Boys Varsity Hockey Team traveled down to South Hamilton, MA to take on the

Pingree School, hoping to rebound from a pair of losses last week. Berwick controlled much of the first period, playing long stretches of the period in the host's end of the ice, and it was only some fine goaltending that kept that game at 1-0 in the first period with the goal going to Chris Michaud. Berwick added to their lead in the second period as Garrett McDonald picked up a goal. Pingree made things interesting by closing the score to 2-1, but then it was MacDonald centering a pass to fellow senior Shane Napolitano who banged home the third goal for the visitors. The third period saw three more goals coming from the newly inspired forwards. Post-grad Brent Phillips added his second in as many games, and then it was Byron Welch finding the top corner, before freshman Jackson Sidford closed out the scoring. Goalies Joey Lazzaro and Rafe Gaughan combined for the 6-1 win. On Thursday, Berwick crosses the border to take on Seacoast foe Exeter Academy.

Donato Tramuto Returns from Ripple of Hope Award Ceremony OGUNQUIT – In recognition of his threedecade commitment to creating social change through the advancement of healthcare and human rights across the globe, Donato Tramuto, Ogunquit resident, was honored in New York on December 16 with the 2014 Ripple of Hope Award from the Robert F Kennedy Center For Justice & Human Rights. “While this award was given to me as an individual, I accept it on behalf of all the people at the business and philanthropic organizations I have had the privilege of leading, without whose contributions

I wouldn’t be standing here today, said Tramuto. “I am humbled by their dedication and commitment to helping me make the world a little better for so many. As Senator Kennedy said, ‘Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events.’ Those words inspired me as child attempting to overcome my own disabilities, and they continue to inspire me today. I am honored to be recognized for trying to live up to Senator Kennedy’s ideals. For more information about the Ripple of Hope Award, visit www.RFKcenter.org/2014Gala.
