to consumers from the company’s website after January 15. The sock will then be available through major retail companies with whom MLTG is co-branding or creating private labels. They include L.L. Bean, Cabela’s, and Bass Pro. The high-tech sock, which has been patented, is made from a proprietary blend of natural and manmade fibers that are chemical-free. The fibers reduce odor, wick away moisture and create a textile that makes it easier to slip in and out of footwear. The sock
is designed for outdoor wear, for work (especially for those who are on their feet all day), and for leisure wear. “I call it the ‘3-in-1 sock’,” Kimball says. “It’s all you’ll ever need.” Kimball (pictured here), who has more than 35 years of experience in business development – in finance, security, investigations and trade – partnered with EZ Glider’s creator, Maine neurosurgeon Lee Thibodeau, in 2017. “I was looking for a project,” Kimball says. He was impressed by Thibodeau’s vision, and the engineering
that went into making this unusually durable and versatile sock. Thibodeau, who works at

York Residents Participate in Energy Conference YORK / AUGUSTA When York residents Rozanna Patane and Stephen Kosacz walked into the crowd in Bangor Savings Bank’s Dirigo Conference Center on December 7, the air was “electric with optimism.” They were there to create Maine’s clean-energy future along with Maine state legislators, Department of Environmental Protection leaders who had barely survived the LePage administration, members of other municipal energy committees across the state, and New England energy policy makers. The enthusiasm was no
doubt fueled by “Gov-Elect” Janet Mills’ published commitment to an ambitious strategy of a Maine clean-energy and

...ENERGY from page 1 Patane, York’s Energy Steering Committee Chair, reported that the transportation session reviewed Maine’s effort already underway to establish a network of electric vehicle charging stations across the state that will hasten the
public’s acceptance of electric vehicles. “When charging stations are more common than gas stations, drivers will be assured they can travel without worry. Buses, trucks and SUVs are now becoming available, and the 5-year cost of operating them beats gas-powered models. We may have to wait for electric heavy equipment
but even that is happening. Kosacz, Committee Vice Chair and Autoworks founder, attended the Energy Efficiency session moderated by Suzanne Watson, American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). Education Foundation of the Kennebunks and Arundel Holds Annual Appeal
KENNEBUNK The Education Foundation of the Kennebunks and Arundel (EFKA) invites the community to ignite the spark of creativity in local students by supporting the Annual Appeal. The appeal, which runs through the end of December, directly supports creative educational opportunities and academic excellence for public school students in RSU 21. Over the past 11 years, more than $1 million in grants has
been invested in local students. “Recent grants include the Leadership School at Camp Kieve for the entire 7th grade at MSK, and the Arts Festival for 3rd, 4th and 5th grades, said James Read, EFKA President. “Everything we do is only made possible by the generosity of our wonderful community. In the 2017-2018 academic year, EFKA’s grants also helped fund new instruments for the band, professional development for teachers, KHS

his operating room staff. Ultimately, Thibodeau came up with a sock that addressed nearly every issue associated with socks. Friction issues were eliminated. A graduated compression weave reduces foot fatigue. The sock’s design and the materials used are intended to reduce blistering. The design also includes targeted areas for moisture wicking, to keep the foot dry. The inclusion of the organic, antimicrobial substance chitosan in the fibers provides an added bonus, with odor reduction. Chitosan, which is made from the outer shells of shellfish, helps keep socks fresh for days. “You don’t have to wash them (even) after wearing them a dozen times, Kimball says. Lastly, the socks are made to have a long life. The fibers in the material, which the com-
pany owners refer to as “intelligent fibers, are rejuvenated after every washing. Kimball says that the socks have extra appeal to outdoor enthusiasts, as they are lightweight and keep feet warm. The company has also made a model that incorporates wool, which is for extreme cold. The makers of EZ Glider also wanted to make an attractive product; these unisex socks are available in seven colors and six designs, and are made for adults and teen. The socks come in five lengths – a “no show model (no sock line is visible); a three, six, nine and a 12-inch model. The EZ Glider is the first of other products in the works for Maine-Lee Technology Group, Kimball says. He says the company’s next product will be a line of bedding products designed to combat dust mites and bed bugs, thanks to the chitosan. As Kimball says, “EZ Glider socks are the first brand revealing that MLTG’s technology works. For more information, visit ezglidersocks.com or mltgllc.com.

is an inventor who has several patents to his credit. His idea for making a friction-less sock started brewing years ago, as he saw his children struggling to slide their feet into shoes and boots. Thibodeau remembered his own struggles, when he was a child; his mother gave him plastic bread bags to put over his socks, so that he could slip in and out of his boots. He also remembered the wrestling matches he had when he tried to pull his feet out of his ski boots. When Thibodeau started his neurosurgery practice, he became aware of another important element of sock design: compression. Compression keeps blood flowing, and thus combats the fatigue that comes with standing on your feet all day. Thibodeau started to make prototypes of compression socks to support the feet of

WELLS Amber and her kitten Little Bit are seeking a happy home together. Very young and very active, they love ongoing attention and frequent playtime. Amber is a buff-colored short hair with the most beautiful amber eyes (pictured on right). Little Bit is five months old, a short-haired dilute torti with beautiful coloration (pictured on left). Amber is a very young mother with a playful personality, very friendly, and likes curling up in your lap. Little Bit loves to be held and play, especially with her mom. They’ll be happiest living with someone active who enjoys playing with them, in a home where they’ll be the only cats, maybe a gentle older dog, and children who are pet-responsible. Please call our adoption center at 646-1611 for more info and to schedule a time to meet them. They’re so cute playing together. Like most mamas, Amber is quite protective of her baby when other cats are around.

KENNEBUNK Aptly-name Snowball is a sweet and handsome old soul (14 years young) looking to find a new home. He would enjoy it if he could be an indoor/outdoor cat so he can come and go as he pleases. At his age, he likes to take things easy. He’s far more likely to seek out comfy spots to nap in than go running about a room after a toy. He’s happy to receive attention from visitors, but he’s never insistent about it and can be shy meeting new people here at AWS. Snowball is the type of cat you’ll be happy to come home to after a long day as he’ll be waiting in his favorite spot, likely napping, ready for your attention. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, My problem is I cannot open my Dell desktop pc because I don’t know what the password is. Thought I knew it but I was wrong. I haven’t used it for a year because I cant get into it. Please help, and THANK YOU in advance. Suzanne Dear Suzanne, Passwords are important for the security of our computers and information, but when we are locked out of our own devices passwords can be a huge headache. The solution to your problem depends on what type of Windows account you have on your computer, and what type of options the manufacturer provided for your computer. If you have a Microsoft account and you used that Microsoft account to log into your Dell PC, you should be able to go online (using another computer) to Microsoft’s website and reset your password. Then, once the password is reset, make sure your PC is plugged into the Internet and you should be able to log in with your new password. If you are using a local account, you might be able to take it to your local computer repair shop and
have them reset the password for you. Even if they can’t reset the password (It used to be a lot easier to do than it is now) they should be able to get your files off the hard drive for you before doing a fresh install of Windows. If you are using a local account and you don’t have any important files on your computer, you can follow the directions on Dell’s website to reset your computer back to the way it was when you bought it. I hope this helps you put your computer back to use. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have subscribed for many many years to your newsletter and have always found the information to be helpful and concise. However, in your Dec 11 when you gave instructions on how to get rid of Bing, I cant’ get rid of it in Internet Explorer. I have tried several times, and I see the program is removed and my default search engine is supposed to be google, but Bing still is the search engine. I have tried clearing cookies and internet history to no avail. Can you help me please, Marlene
in Internet Explorer. 1. Open Internet Explorer. 2. Click on the Gear icon in the upper-right corner of the window, and click on “Internet Options. 3. On the “General tab of the Internet Options window, check your home page to make sure it is not Bing. If it is, change it to another page that you prefer. 4. Click on the “Programs tab, and then click the “Manage Add-ons button. 5. Check “Toolbars and Extensions for any Bing products. If there are any, remove them. 6. Click on “Search Providers and Remove Bing if it is listed. If Bing is the only search provider, you will have to add another one before you can remove Bing. To remove it, click on “Bing and then click the “Remove button. 7. Close the Internet Options window, and you should be all set. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Please tell me how I can clean all the junk out of my computer for free. I am 86 years old and I know almost nothing about computers but mine is so full of rubbish I have to do something and I cant afford to take it to
the shop. So if you could guide me maybe I could clean it up by myself. I know you are very busy so if you don’t have the time please tell me how to find your archives. Thank you so very, very much, Gladys Dear Gladys, How to go about cleaning your computer depends on what is on it for junk, and if there are any malware infections. Here are some steps you can take. 1. Go to the Control Panel, click on “Uninstall A Program and go through the list of installed programs. You can uninstall any programs that you no longer want or use. 2. Get a free program called CCleaner and use it to clean up your files and registry entries. You can download Ccleaner at: www.ccleaner.com. 3. Do a scan with a good security program like Emsisoft. You can download a free 30 day trial at www.emsisoft. com. Hopefully, this will help clean your computer and speed it up. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I find your information to be valuable. I do have a question,
I use Internet Explorer in Windows 7. How do I delete all of the places I have looked at once or twice? Thank you so much, Valerie Dear Valerie, All you have to do, is open your internet options and delete your history. Here is how: 1. Click on “Startâ€?, then type “Control Panelâ€? in the search box. Click on “Control Panel in the search results. 2. In the Control Panel window, click on the “Network and Internetâ€? category. 3. Click on “Internet Optionsâ€? to open the Internet properties dialog box. 4. In the “Browsing Historyâ€? section, click the “Delete...â€? button. 5. In the dialog box that appears, make sure “Historyâ€? is selected, then click the “Deleteâ€? button at the bottom of the dialog box. Tricks to Extend the Life of Your Smartphone Battery At one point or another, all smartphone users have reached for their phones to look up directions or use an app only to find the phone’s battery power is very low or completely wiped out. Such incidences play out each day, frustrating smartphone users, especially on those occasions when they haven’t used their phones enough to seemingly merit a drained battery. Some smartphone battery issues can only be remedied by replacing the battery or even the phone itself. But many issues can be addressed with a few simple tricks designed to ensure phones aren’t needlessly consuming battery power. • Set up quicker timeouts. Screen timeouts refer to how

long a screen stays lit after receiving input. A lit screen is consuming battery power even if the phone’s user isn’t using the phone. Choosing the shortest available screen timeout time, which is 15 seconds on many smartphones, reduces the amount of time the screen is lit and using battery power. Go into your phone’s settings to adjust the screen timeout duration. • Dim the screen brightness. An especially bright smartphone screen also consumes significant battery power. If your phone has it, utilize the auto-brightness feature, which automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen based on the lighting in the room you happen to be in when using your phone. This ensures your screen isn’t needlessly bright in rooms with adequate ambient lighting, saving battery power as a result. • Disable and/or delete apps you don’t use. Chances are strong that right now your smartphone is runnings apps you aren’t using and aren’t even aware are on your phone. Access the device maintenance menu on your phone to see which apps

are currently running and consuming battery power, and turn off any you aren’t using, even deleting those you never use. In addition, access the settings menu on your phone and make sure that background apps aren’t automatically running each time you turn the phone on. • Turn off wireless services. Wireless services, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS, consume a lot of battery power, even when you aren’t using them. That’s because, unless they’re turned off, they’re constantly looking to connect. By turning them off when you aren’t using them, you can extend your smartphone’s battery power by a significant margin each day. No one wants to deal with a drained smartphone battery. Thankfully, a few simple steps can reduce the likelihood that smartphone batteries needlessly consume power throughout the day. KENNEBUNKPORT Need an escape from the holiday chaos!? The Kennebunkport Conservation Trust’s lighted labyrinth at the Grist

“One, Two, Three to be Screened OGUNQUIT “One, Two, Three is a 1961 brilliant American comedy film directed by Billy Wilder, and written by Wilder and I. A. Diamond. The film will be onscreen at the Dunaway Center, 23 School Street, Ogunquit, on Sunday, January 6 at 2 p.m. Legendary actor James Cagney gives a dazzling performance in this rapid-fire comedy satire that also stars Arlene Francis, Horst Buchholz, Pamela Tiffin and Lilo Pulver. It was filmed in West Berlin and Munich in the summer of 1961 and set primarily in West Berlin during the Cold War, but before the construction of the Berlin Wall. It is known for its extraordinary fast pace, taking satiric aim at communism, capitalism, post-war Germany, corporate America, previous Cagney films, alligator shoes, and a host of other targets. Billy Wilder wrote and/ or directed a wide variety of pictures during his renowned career but he’s probably best known for the stunning comedies he created with screenwriter I. A. Diamond. “One, Two, Three is a prime example, with a mile-a-minute script pitting Coca-Cola against Communism. James Cagney’s performance is a tour de force, delivering pages of script at dizzying speed. Cagney plays C.R. MacNamara, Coca-Cola’s ambitious head of bottling in West Germany, who is determined to cut a deal to distribute Coke to the Russian market while at the same time desperately trying to prevent his boss’s visiting flighty daughter (Tiffin) from marrying a card-carrying communist hippie (Buchholz), while under the disapproving eye of his own neglected wife (Francis). Then in his early sixties,
Cagney was not initially certain he should take on the part. On reading the script, he understood that the bulk of the film rested on his abilities and stamina. And indeed, Wilder’s insistence on breakneck, rat-a-tat-tat timing to each and every scene soon began to wear on Cagney, - especially on those occasions when the actor received pages of script only the night before, and then was expected to spit out a steady stream of complex dialogue while handling equally complicated stage direction. Cagney was genuinely irked that Wilder demanded word-for-word perfection and wouldn’t accept even the slightest bit of paraphrasing. The film is shown on a full wall-size screen; admission, parking, and popcorn are free! For more information, visit www.ogunquitperformingarts.org.

The Confection Conspiracy By JimFabiano A conspiracy is threatening our nation and no-one has the power to stop it. I am not talking about the military industrial complex or foreign terrorists bent on the destruction of the United States. I am talking about a conspiracy of much greater magnitude between the confectionery industry and the weight loss industry. Ever since Thanksgiving reared its head with pumpkin pies, chocolate covered lollipops in the shape of pilgrims and those evil yellow peepers the sugar industry has inundated our lives with tons of holiday delights. They could be found everywhere. When one woke up in the morning they were next to our breakfast cereal in the form of clover shaped green marshmallows. Our coffee went from bitter and black to sweet and creamy. Driving to work, little bags of crispy treats were found on the front seat of the car and even the toll booth attendants gave out little foiled wrapped kisses along with their morning greetings. Upon arrival at work everyone seemed to have their own sweet little treat. The exchange of candies and holiday cakes continued through lunch. At least what most of us used to think was lunch. The midday meal used to consist of a plastic wrapped tuna salad sandwich stuffed under a two-month old apple or pear. If you were real lucky you might find a brown spotted banana in a brown paper bag. The holiday lunch consisted of jellied ham sandwiches, fruitcake, Christmas cookies and walnut laden chocolate brownies smothered with powdered sugar to the point where you expected to see a small plastic man skiing down its slopes. This insanity went on for an entire month, only to come to a crescendo during Christmas week. It seemed as though every-
one was locked into some kind of mad contest to see who could bring in the most sugar filled delights. You might think this insanity would wind down after Christmas but no chance - not with New Year exactly one week later. This meant a continuation of the sugar binge with alcohol thrown in. It was only at the stroke of midnight on New Years that it all came to a halt. The bright colors of the holiday season were put away and the confectionery pipelines shut down as if the world had finally run out of sugar. Early the next morning you could almost hear a sigh sweeping across the country followed by an agonized scream as the nation wiped off its steamed bathroom mirror and took the first good look at itself in six weeks. This is where the conspiracy becomes evident. Overnight the multi-million dollar confectionery industry morphed into the multi-million dollar health industry. The morning breakfast was replaced by a foil wrapped piece of wood filled with fiber that promised to eliminate itself from your alimentary canal seconds after ingestion. It had the taste and con-

sistency of dry wall and I swear I still have the splinters embedded in my gums to prove it. The post holiday lunch consisted of a thin piece of not-soreal cheese smeared with a mustard substitute in a roll that contained more air than bread. The roll was generally so dry that you had to have a cup of water ready in order to replace the saliva it sponged up the moment you put it in your mouth. Beneath the pseudo-sandwich laid another foil wrapped piece of wood that promised a quick retreat to the nearest rest room. The most memorable part of this particular lunch was the brown bag that, on some occasions, had been imbibed only beSee CONFECTION page 20...
WASHINGTON, DC U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) announced that the Parity in Animal Cruelty Enforcement (PACE) Act is included in the 2018 Farm Bill. The legislation, which passed both the Senate and the House of Representative with overwhelming bipartisan support, was signed into law. In May, Senator Collins led a group of 27 Senators in introducing the PACE Act and in August, they sent a letter to the leadership on the Senate Agriculture Committee urging them to include the PACE Act in the 2018 Farm Bill. The PACE Act would protect animals from vicious cruelty, protect communities from criminal activity often linked to animal fighting such as drug trafficking and gang violence, reduce public health threats from bird flu and other diseases, and enhance enforcement of the federal animal fighting law across the United States. “Animal fighting is a cruel activity that pits animals against each other, with animals often
drugged to heighten their aggression and forced to keep fighting even after they have suffered grievous injuries, said Senator Collins. “The PACE Act will clarify federal prohibitions on animal fighting activity and ensure they are extended to all U.S. jurisdictions, including U.S. territories. “We are grateful Senator Collins worked in a bipartisan fashion to lead efforts to include the Parity in Animal Cruelty Enforcement (PACE) Act in the Farm Bill, Humane Society Legislative Fund President Sara Amundson said. “This provision will ensure that current federal prohibitions on animal fighting activity are consistently applied in all U.S. jurisdictions including the U.S. territories, where cockfighting is often still openly displayed, and thereby protect animals from vicious cruelty, protect communities from other criminal activity often linked to animal fighting, and reduce threats to public health and the food supply from the transmission of bird flu and other diseases.

AUGUSTA The start of a new year marks a fresh beginning, and as Americans prepare to ring in 2019, the American Lung Association in Maine offers five tips on how to improve your lung health all year long. 1) Quit Smoking: Quitting tobacco is the best thing you can do for your lungs, and your health. What makes it so dangerous is that it’s invisible, odorless and tasteless, and can also build up in homes and buildings to dangerous levels undetected. One in

Some of the reasons behind the change include a shift in media depictions, a new body ideal of lean and toned rather than “skinny, and because a greater number of people in North America are simply larger. Women can boost their self-esteem and reverse negative feelings about their bodies by introducing new thinking pat-
terns. • Don’t always believe what you see. Some companies use very small models for their marketing efforts and through digital photo manipulation whittle down bodies even further. Some models dubbed “plus-sizedâ€? do not actually meet that classification. Models are considered plus sized if they wear between a size eight and 12, with some as small as size six. The average American woman wears a size 16, according to the International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology and Education, and that’s at the lower end of “plus sized.â€? • Shop fit not size. What’s appearing on racks may be subjected to “vanity sizing,â€? where everything from jeans to swimwear is cut small. Rather than focusing on sizes on the tags, women should choose items that fit well and feel comfortable. • Make a list of positive attributes. Health & Fitness American Red Cross Offers Holiday Season Safety Tips NATIONWIDE The holiday season is here, and the American Red Cross wants everyone to stay safe from home fires as they decorate their homes for the upcoming festivities. Decorations like trees, lights and candles increase the risk of home fires during the holidays—with Christmas, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day being the top three days for home candle fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. The Red Cross wants people to stay safe from home fires—the nation’s most frequent disaster—by testing their smoke alarms and practicing their home fire escape plan with free resources at redcross. org/homefires. In addition, you can follow these 10 simple safety tips as you put up lights and ornaments: Check all holiday light cords to make sure they aren’t frayed or broken. Don’t string too many strands of lights together—no more than three per extension cord. If buying an artificial tree, look for the fire-resistant label. When putting it up, keep it away from fireplaces, radiators and other sources of heat. If getting a live tree, make sure it’s fresh and water it to keep it fresh. Bend the needles up and down to make sure no needles fall off. If using older decorations, check their labels. Some older tinsel is lead-based. If using angel hair, wear gloves to avoid irritation. Avoid breathing in artificial snow. When decorating outside, make sure decorations are
for outdoor use and fasten lights securely to your home or trees. If using hooks or nails outside, make sure they are insulated to avoid an electrocution or fire hazard. If using a ladder, be extra careful. Make sure to have good, stable placement and wear shoes that provide good traction. Don’t use electric lights on metallic trees. Don’t forget to turn off all holiday lights when going to bed or leaving the house. Keep children, pets and decorations away from candles. If hanging stockings on the fireplace mantel, don’t light the fireplace. Every eight minutes, donations to the Red Cross help someone affected by a disaster—most often, home fires. Sadly, these events take more lives each year than all other natural disasters combined in the U.S. To prevent these tragedies, the Red Cross
launched the national Home Fire Campaign in October 2014, working with volunteers and community partners to install free smoke alarms and help families create escape plans. Through the campaign, the Red Cross and its partners have reached more than 1.6 million people and helped save at least 474 lives, including those of at least eight Mainers, across the country by: Installing more than 1.5 million free smoke alarms Making 623,000 households safer from the threat of home fires Reaching more than 1.2 million children through youth preparedness programs You can help save lives by making a financial donation to support our mission, signing up to become a volunteer or taking steps to protect your own family from home fires. Visit redcross. org to learn more.
...OPINIONS from page 12 pertain to more than their appearance. • Choose positive friends. Women can surround themselves with positive-minded people who do not compare their bodies to others’. Female self-esteem and positive body images are improving as more women and industries promote body positivity. BUSINESS & FINANCE How To Hone Your Time Managment Skills
Ours is a busy society where everyone is moving from place to place quite rapidly, whether at school, home or work. As a result, many people may feel that there simply are not enough hours in the day to get it all done. Quite often people delay certain tasks until the late hours of the night as a way to catch up. But that can be detrimental to health. The National Institute of Health warns that lack of adequate sleep can affect mood, adversely affect relationships, increase anxiety, and possibly contribute to depression. Inadequate sleep is also associated with increased
risk of high blood pressure, obesity and heart disease. Rather than tapping into precious hours of shut-eye, men and women can learn how to manage their time better so they complete more tasks during the day, leaving more time to relax and sleep at night. Effective time management begins with these strategies. • Set priorities. Begin by setting priorities. This involves making a list of all the tasks that need to be completed, and then putting them in order of most essential to least essential. Once you understand where to first devote your attention, address items on the list in order of their
priority. • Develop goals. Goals do not have to be far-off ideas for the future. They can be easily reached today. Simple goals such as, “I want to remove all nonessential paperwork from my desk” can be tackled quickly and without much effort. Goals give a person something to work toward and are important ways to steer you in the right direction. Without goals, you may wander aimlessly. Accomplishing goals of all shapes and sizes gives a feeling of accomplishment. 3. Avoid distractions. Distractions can pull attention away from important tasks at
hand. Distractions can be phone calls, text alerts, personal issues, people in the room, and many other things. Figure out how you work best and minimize distractions so that you can fully focus on your priorities. 4. Stop multitasking. Unfortunately, multitasking is not the key to getting more things done. In fact, it could actually be hurting performance. Research conducted at Stanford University discovered that multitasking is less productive than doing a single thing at a time. You simply cannot put full effort into multiple things at once — and something will be shortchanged if you try.
5. Write things down. Keeping information floating around your mind is ineffective and can lead to stress. Put things down on paper or make digital notes to keep track of what needs to get done. Set your targets and break each task down to manageable pieces. Physically cross items off your list as they are completed. Time management is a skill that can be learned with practice and focusing on elements of success. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by thirdparty sources.
6 Options For Funding Your Home Improvement Project Before starting a home improvement project, either on one’s own or with the assistance of a professional contractor, homeowners must first consider the costs involved. According to the home improvement resource HomeAdvisor, more than one-third of homeowners do not understand what hiring a professional will cost, and then cannot successfully budget and secure financing once they have set their sights on a renovation project. HomeAdvisor says that some of the more popular projects, such as remodeling a kitchen or bathroom or building a deck, can cost, on average, $19,920, $9,274 and $6,919,
respectively. Homeowners may find that the more expensive renovations require them to secure some type of financing. Those who have never before sought such financing may want to consider these options. 1. Cash-out refinancing: With cash-out refinancing, a person will begin the mortgage process anew with the intention of paying off the current mortgage balance, and then taking out additional funds for other purposes. Cash-out refinancing is a way to tap into a home’s existing equity for use on improvements or other expenses, such as college tuition. 2. Home equity line of

credit: The financial experts at Bankrate indicate that a HELOC works like a credit card, with the house as collateral. There is a credit limit, and borrowers can spend up to that limit. The interest rate may or may not be fixed. However, the interest may be tax-deductible if the financing is used to improve, buy or build a home. 3. Home equity loan: Individuals also can borrow against equity in their homes with a fixed interest rate through a home equity loan. Most lenders will calculate 80 percent of the home value and subtract a homeowner’s mortgage balance to figure out how much can be borrowed, according to the financial advisory site The Simple Dollar. 4. Personal loan: Homeowners can shop around at various financial institutions for competitive personal loans to be used for home improvement purposes. Funds may be approved within one business day, which can be ideal for those who want to begin their improvements soon. 5. Personal line of credit: A personal line of credit allows borrowers to borrow only the
money needed at the time, and offers a variable interest rate that is generally lower than fixed loan rates. Again, like a credit card, PLOC gives a person a maximum borrowing amount and is ideal for ongoing purchases.

AUGUSTA Values are increasing for Maine’s single-family existing homes. According to the Maine Listings, the median sales price (MSP) for homes sold in November reached $219,000—a jump of 9.5% compared to November 2017. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. Sales statistics held strong with a 2.9% rise comparing November 2018 to November 2017. “Overall, real estate continues to be a good investment, as steady long-term increased value is outpacing the volatility found in other investment options,” says Kim Gleason,

2018 President of the Maine Association of REALTORS® and Broker/Owner of McAllister Real Estate in Hallowell. “Through November, Maine’s residential real estate sales volume is 2.7 percent ahead of 2017. The monthly 2018 statewide median sales prices are higher than each comparable month in 2017.” According to the National Association of Realtors, sales dipped 6.7% nationally comparing November 2018 to November 2017, while the MSP rose 5.0 percent to $260,500 over that same time period. The regional Northeast experienced a 2.6% decrease in sales and a 6.5% rise in the MSP to $291,400 comparing November 2018 to November 2017. “Consumer confidence in home ownership remains high in Maine and owning a home is a good financial decision,” added Gleason. “If your 2019 plans involve selling or buying real estate, your local REALTOR® has the most accurate, up-to-date information on market conditions to maximize your investment.”

...CONFECTION from page 11 cause of its superior taste. What used to be a festive atmosphere at work became a place where stomachs growled and toilets flushed. The rosy red cheeks on everyone’s face, caused by the sugar induced increase in blood pressure, were replaced by the pallid gray complexions of people who spent too much time in the bathroom. Nightly TV commercials continued with artificially enhanced celebrities promoting only healthy and active life styles. Gone were the cooking shows, replaced by svelte and beautiful people who must have been isolated on some remote desert island for the entire holiday season. Dinner went from feast to famine. Gone were the colorful treats around the dinner plate, replaced by wafers and crackers around bowls of thin
soup. A conspiracy is threatening our nation and no one has the power to stop it. It will take us many weeks and many millions of dollars to become what we once were. The confectionery industry and the health industry have obviously joined forces to control our lives and empty our pockets. We will struggle in vain over the next few weeks to regain control of our lives and our appetites only to watch the confectionery industry rise up again in the form of a giant chocolate heart. Valentine’s day is only weeks away. Jim Fabiano, a retired teacher and writer who lives in York, is a past recipient of the Maine Press Association’s award for Best Weekly Column. ~ News ~ Senate Passes Legislation to Protect Energy Grid from Cyber-Attacks WASHINGTON, D.C. The U.S. Senate passed the Securing Energy Infrastructure Act, a bipartisan bill introduced by U.S. Senators Angus King (IMaine) and Jim Risch (R-Idaho). Both Senators are members of the Senate Intelligence Committee and the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources (ENR). The legislation would defend the U.S. energy grid by partnering with industry to utilize engineering concepts to remove vulnerabilities that could allow hackers to access the grid through holes in digital software systems. “For years we’ve seen the danger of cyber-attacks grow as bad actors pursue larger and more sophisticated incursions on our vital systems, but the federal government’s response has not matched the severity of these threats,” said Senator King. “This commonsense, bipartisan bill is an important step in the right direction, and will help protect America’s critical infrastructure from devastating attacks before they happen.” Senators King and Risch first introduced the Securing Energy Infrastructure Act in the 115th Congress in January 2017, and the legislation has gained momentum in the months since. In March 2017, the ENR Committee held a hearing on the legislation, and in September 2017 the Western Governors’ Association endorsed the proposal. In October 2017, a companion bill
was introduced in the House of Representatives by Representatives Dutch Ruppersberger (DMd.) and John Carter (R-Tex.). In March 2018, the legislation was passed by the ENR Committee. Senators Martin Heinrich (DN.M.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), and Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) are also original cosponsors of the legislation. Critical infrastructure within the United States is an enticing target to malicious actors. Notably, these include industrial control systems, which are operational technologies used to measure, control, or manage industrial functions (e.g., supervisory control and data acquisition systems). Industrial control systems are used in oil and gas pipelines, in electric power generation, transmission, and distribution, in the energy sector, and across other sectors such as water management and mass transit. Top officials within the intelligence, defense, and power communities have warned that the United States remains vulnerable to cyber-attacks on these systems, which could result in catastrophic damage to public health and safety, economic security, and national security. The bill was inspired in part by Ukraine’s experience in 2015, when a sophisticated cyber-attack on that country’s power grid led to more than 225,000 people being left in the dark. The attack’s severity was limited by Ukraine’s use of less complex technology
Mills Invites People of Maine to Inauguration AUGUSTA Governor-elect Janet Mills announced recently that tickets for the inauguration are now available to the public and can be reserved at www.janetmills.com/rsvp/public. The Inauguration – which will consist of a joint legislative session, the swearing-in ceremony and the governor’s inaugural address, among other celebratory events – will begin at 6 p.m. on the Constitutionally set day of Wednesday, January 2, the “first Wednesday after the first Tuesday in January” at the Augusta Civic Center. “An inauguration is about
the people of Maine and honoring our heritage, our traditions, and our future,” said Governor-elect Mills. “I invite people across the state to join us for this time-honored tradition as we look to lead Maine in a new, better direction.” Tickets are required for entry. The website will prompt the ticket-seeker to enter their name, address, and email, and, once completed, the ticket will be available to print in PDF format, emailed to the recipient, and can also be held at will call on site at the Civic Center. Those unable to reserve a ticket online can call 207-209-4270
to reserve one. Tickets are reserved on a first come, first serve basis until the Civic Center’s capacity is reached. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Guests should be seated by 5:45 p.m. For security reasons, no backpacks or large bags will be allowed. Carpooling to the inauguration is highly recommended. In addition to the Augusta Civic Center, parking will be available at the University of Maine Augusta and Maine Municipal Association after 5 p.m. Additional information about parking and hotel options can be found at www. janetmills.com.
to operate its grid, a concept that helped inspire the bill. The legislation would establish a two-year pilot program within the National Laboratories to partner with industry and develop ways to utilize cyber-informed engineering concepts to simplify and isolate automated systems and remove vulnerabilities that could allow hackers to access the grid through holes in digital software systems. Senator King has been a leading voice on the need for a national emphasis on cyber deter-
rence, and has repeatedly pressed officials in both the Obama and Trump Administrations on the importance of deterrence. During an ENR Committee Hearing in June, Senator pushed for leadership on a cyber strategy, saying in part, “We know that a cyberattack is coming at some point… shame on us if we’re not prepared for it.” In March, he highlighted the topic in both the ENR and Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC). In February, Senator King questioned Admiral Mike
Rogers and other top national intelligence officials on the importance of a national doctrine on cybersecurity. ...PROJECT from page 14 balance is not paid in full by the time the bill comes due. However, for funding smaller projects and maximizing rewards points through home improvement retailers or specific credit card company promotions, credit cards can be a way to earn various perks in addition to the benefit of improving a home. Homeowners looking to finance their next improvements should speak to a financial advisor and shop around for the best types of funding for them. People and Business Profiles SIS Bank Recognizes Star Lender for 2018 YORK COUNTY SIS Bank is proud to announce that its VP Commercial Banker John Tanguay has received this year’s Star Lender of Maine award from the Small Business Administration (SBA). The Star Lender of Maine award is given out annually at the SBA Lender Awards to recognize a local lender who has gone above and beyond to help a customer (or customers), using the SBA’s programs. Tanguay was chosen as the honored recipient for 2018, for having taken on an especially complicated deal by using an SBA loan guaranty program. Tanguay employed the SBA’s CAPLine Program because of how well it fit his customer’s needs, even though the program is not often used in Maine.
