The land remains in private hands and on the tax rolls, yet is protected from threats of subdivision or development for non-farm purposes. The easement will be monitored and enforced by Great Works Regional Land Trust. “Anna and I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to run this business and provide food for the people of Wells, and we

Michael Wright, President of Great Works Regional Land Trust, praises the Spillers for their dedication to land conservation and the health of their community. ‘’Bill and Anna took these steps because they love their farm and the Town of Wells. Nearly 4.47 million New England residents are expected to travel at least 50 miles away from home during the holiday period, a 2.5 percent increase compared to 2015. Eighty-eight percent of travelers, or 3.96 million New Englanders, will travel by car to their destinations – a 2.6 percent increase from last year when

Nationally, AAA projects 103 million travelers over the Christmas/New Year holiday, topping last year’s 101.5 million end-of-year travelers by 1.5
percent. This marks the eighth consecutive year of growth for end-of-year holiday travel. “This holiday period is the longest one of the year and the most popular one for travelers because so many make it a priority to reunite with family and friends, said Pat Moody manager of public affairs for AAA Northern New England. The increase in holiday travel this year is being driven by additional consumer spending, a result of improvements in the labor market and rising wages. Additionally, low gas prices and increased consumer optimism See TRAVEL page 9...

Senate Passes 21st Century Cures Act, a Bipartisan Bill WASHINGTON, DC The 21st Century Cures Act, milestone medical innovation legislation that was championed by Maine Senator Susan Collins, was signed into law in December. The new law will spur the advancement of biomedical research, improve our mental health system, and help combat the opioid abuse epidemic. “All of us know someone who courageously faces the struggles of living with a debilitating chronic illness or rare disease, or who received a devastating diagnosis and was gone too soon. Through the strong support of research and development, the 21st Century
Cures Act will help us achieve our dream of conquering disease, said Senator Collins. “The 21st Century Cures Act will also make the most significant reforms to our mental health system in more than a
decade and help direct $1 billion in much-needed funding to address the heroin and opioid epidemic in this country, which has hit Maine communities particularly hard. Senator Collins, the Chairman of the Aging Committee and a member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, authored five provisions contained within the See CURE page 5...

showed great patience in working with us for almost three years while sufficient funds were raised and the conservation process was completed. Spiller Farm provides more than fresh apples, berries, corn and other crops. It supports stable farm jobs and creates economic activity to benefit the community at large. It delivers fresh, healthy food for the Wells-Ogunquit Community School District. And each year, for many years, the Spillers have donated thousands of pounds of produce to local food pantries for neighbors in need. The Town of Wells Conservation Commission was a critical partner in the success of the project. “The people of Wells should be proud to know that they have supported this land with their votes and their tax dollars, says Owen Grumbling, Chair of the Conservation Commission. “It’s a wonderful thing to know that our town will have a place to grow food forever. In November 2014, the residents of Wells voted in favor of appropriating more than $150,000 from the town’s Land Bank Reserve, by a 75% majority. Keith Fletcher, a Wells resident and Project Manager for Maine Coast Heritage Trust (a statewide land conservation organization) managed this project on behalf of the local land trust, helping draft documents and offering critical technical assistance to make the project happen. “People talk about the great quality of life in Wells. Well, folks like Bill and Anna are the ones who make it great. Their hard work, generosity, and gifts of fresh food, improve the lives of those in need. And now, by having the vision and taking the steps to preserve their farm, they have given a great gift to all of us, and to future generations, said Fletcher. Funds for the conservation agreement, called an Agricultural Conservation Easement, were provided by the Federal Farm and Ranchland Protection Program, administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture; by the Town of Wells Land Bank; and by dozens of private donors to Great Works Regional Land Trust. One in five Americans—nearly 44 million people—experience

~ Pets & News ~ Cold Weather Safety Tips for Our Furry Friends STATEWIDE With bitterly cold temperatures forecasted for the next few days, it is important pet owners keep their furry friends safe during the severe winter weather. The cold weather is difficult on our pets and the American Red Cross in Maine has steps people can follow to help ensure their pet’s safety over the next few days and throughout the remainder of the winter season. “Pet owners should bring their animals inside to protect
them from the severe winter weather forecasted for the region, said Dave Sheehan, Regional Disaster Program Officer for the Red Cross in Maine. “Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas and make sure they have access to non-frozen drinking water. Other tips pet owners should be aware of include: Salt and other chemicals used to melt snow and ice can irritate a pet’s paws. Wipe their paws with a damp towel before
your pet licks them and irritates their mouth. Antifreeze is a deadly poison. Wipe up spills and store antifreeze out of reach. Signs of frostbite include discoloration of the frozen area, pale or even blue skin, no pain or lots of pain. The pads of the paws, tail and tips of the ears are most susceptible. If your pet has frostbite, bring them out of the cold immediately. Spray the affected area with warm water. Lightly apply
a warm compress to the area. Do not rub or apply pressure. Take your pet to your veterinarian immediately. If pet owners would like additional information, download the American Red Cross Pet First Aid App: The app provides dog and cat owners with resources on how to maintain their pet’s health and well-being and what to do during emergencies until veterinary care is available. Doodle is gentle, loves everyone, great with other cats, dogs and children. His only request is an indoor only home for his long term safety, health and longevity. His amended request is a few simple kitten toys to keep him amused, lots of love, and lap time for nap time. Doodle will be interviewing for a new family next weekend and he really would like to meet you. In addition to Doodle, we still have an extremely small
number of young kittens, a few teenage kittens and a limited number of young and older adult cats also looking for new families to love in the year 2017. Our goal is still to place all of our furry little clients in to loving families before the holidays and year 2016 ends. Please stop by to meet these wonderful needy loving pets that are so hoping to meet you. Currently our cupboard is getting pretty low. ~ Ask The Computer Lady & News ~
Dear Computer Lady, Carbonite has a post that Word Press has been hacked and customers have been receiving ransomware. Have you seen this? Thanks, Cindy Dear Cindy, I did not see this specific message from Carbonite, but I don't doubt it. WordPress is a blogging platform that has been installed on millions of websites around the world. I use WordPress on the question and answer part of my website, it is a great way to organize the many categories of questions and answers I have written over the years, and has search functions so that you and others can easily find what you are looking for. Since WordPress is installed on so many websites worldwide, it is a prime target for hackers. If they can get into a popular website and install their malicious software and trick people into downloading it, they can spread that software. My WordPress site has been hacked before, which is why I now have it protected with SiteLock. What you need to do to protect yourself from sites that might be infected is to make sure you have a good antivirus/antimalware program installed on your computer and make sure it is kept updated. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a 32GB flash drive connected to my hard drive for automatic backups. Now I'm
getting a message that my flash drive doesn't have enough space. When a computer does automatic backups doesnĂt the new replace the old info? Do I need to get a new and larger flash drive, erase the current one or what? Thank you for all the great info you share with us in your emails! Bonnie Dear Bonnie, The answer to these questions depends on a few things. Lets take a look. First, when a computer does automatic backups, it might replace old backups with the new one, it might not. It really depends on what backup software you are using, and how you have it setup. When using either Acronis True Image, or the Windows 10 backup, you have the option to keep older backups, or not. You can also keep a certain number of older backups, say the 5 most recent backups. This can be valuable in the event that you accidentally lose data in a document, or get infected with ransomware. Next, do you need a new, larger flash drive? The short answer is, yes, but the reasons go beyond just the size of the flash drive. 32GB is a fairly small backup size in today's world of saving your documents, photos, music and videos. I backup files for my customers almost every day and most of these backups are larger than 32GB. Flash drives are great for short term

storage, but if you are using a flash drive for daily or weekly backups, I would suggest you buy a new one every 6 months or so. At the very least, replace it every year. The packaging on your flash drive might say that it will last a lot longer, but flash drives don't usually fail because of their age, but because they have a limited number of write cycles. This means that the more often you backup and replace files on the flash drive, the shorter it's lifespan will be. If I was backing up to a flash drive, I would buy myself two identical flash drives and swap them out every week. That way if the drive attached to your computer fails, or is compromised by ransomware, you have another copy that is only a week old. I would also start each year with two brand new flash drives to backup to. I hope this helps with your backup plans. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady. I am an artist and want to send photos to someone who is running an art exhibit. My jpeg photos can be no larger than 2 MB. All of the jpeg photos on my computer of my art are larger than that. I understand there is a way to compress them but I don't know how. My operating system is windows 7. Can you help please, Thanks Margaret Dear Margaret, What you need is an image program that can resize or resample your images. Make sure you save a copy of your photo in the smaller size as you don't want to lose the clarity and details in the original. My preferred program for resizing is Irfanview at: www.irfanview. com/. Once you have downloaded and installed Irfanview,

This will open a dialog box where you can set the new size you want your picture to be. Make sure there is a check mark in front of "Preserve aspect ratio" then change the larger dimension. The smaller dimension will automatically resize as well. Dear Linda, When your friends make a post, or post a picture, they can tag you by mentioning your name, or tagging you in the picture. While there doesn't appear to be a setting to stop your friends from tagging you (sometimes simply asking them to not tag you will be the best solution) you can turn on a setting in Facebook that will allow you to manually approve posts that you have been tagged in before they show up on your timeline. It is important to note that this will only stop them from showing up on your timeline, not other people's timelines. There is also a setting where you can control who can see posts and photos that you have been tagged in. Both these settings are found in the same place. 1. Click on the small triangle located at the top-right corner of your Facebook page. 2. Click on "Settings" in the drop down menu. 3. When the Settings page loads, click on "Timeline and Tagging" in the left column. 4. The first timeline setting has a section where you can review posts friends tag you in before they post to your timeline. Just turn this setting on. 5. In the next section, where it says, "who can see things on my timeline?" you can change the settings to "Only Me" so that others can't see the posts. You can change as many settings as you want in this section, in fact if you change everything to "Only Me" you will be almost invisible on Facebook. I hope this helps. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Steve Hrehovcik Launches eBook “Rebel Without A Clue – A WayOff Broadway Memoir KENNEBUNK Local writer/artist Steve Hrehovcik announces the launch of his eBook “Rebel Without A Clue – A Way-Off Broadway Memoir on January 2. Blending a candid confessional with a sense of humor, Hrehovcik’s memoir illustrates how, with persistence and patience, he became an expert on survival. In 27 chapters, he describes his turbulent, often farcical, journey in a desperate search for a career in the theater. After suffering countless heartbreaking disappointments, he discovered the bright lights of Broadway, became littered with burned-out bulbs and the drama, on stage and off, made a not-so-funny second act. Never giving up, his story also reveals how he managed to carry on with some semblance of dignity and achieve a few surprising triumphs along the way – most important, a marriage of 51 years, three remarkable children and a wonderful grandson. At the
end of each chapter Hrehovcik includes a cartoon drawing adding fun to the theme of his story. The eBook will be available on most internet outlets. If preordered before January 2, 2017 it is available for $3.99. Hrehovcik will be making several readings of “Rebel at local venues, including the Kennebunk Free Library on February 1 and the Brick Store Museum at a date to be announced.

Excerpted from “J.K. Lasser's Your Income Tax 2017, here are some simple steps you can take right now to decrease your 2016 tax bill. Hurry: These must be done before the ball drops in Times Square. The holiday season is in full swing, and you're probably in a last-minute-gift-buying, party-planning frenzy right now. The last thing on your mind? Taxes. For most people, sparing a thought for the upcoming tax season is the ultimate "bah

humbug." But this mindset could cost you big when April 15th rolls around, warns tax and business attorney Barbara Weltman. "There are some very simple steps you can take right now, before the end of the year, that can make a big dent in your tax burden," says Weltman, who is the spokesperson for J.K. Lasser's Your Income Tax 2017 (Wiley, October 2016, Paperback and e-book, ISBN: 978-1-119-248200, $24.95). "It's crazy that people miss so many opportunities to save money just because they're disorganized or have procrastination issues." The book Weltman represents is written to help the average taxpayer successfully navigate the filing process. With full coverage of all changes and adjustments to the tax laws—including new deductions and credits—it provides clear, plain-English explanations that help readers decipher the tax code and reduce what taxpayers owe.
So step away from the gift wrap, pour yourself a cup of hot apple cider, and start checking off this end-of-the-year tax-relief list: Make charitable contributions if you're an itemizer. Charging gifts by credit card or mailing a check before the end of the year nails down a charitable contribution deduction for 2016. Pay outstanding medical bills. If you itemize, you can deduct amounts charged this year or checks mailed before the end of the year. For those age 65 and older, 2016 is the last year for a 7.5 percent adjusted gross income threshold (it's set to go to 10 percent of AGI next year). Take your required minimum distribution (RMD). Those who are required to take distributions from IRAs and qualified retirement plans but fail to do so face a 50 percent See TAXING page 11...

...TAXING from page 10 penalty. Those 70½ and older can transfer from an IRA up to $100,000 directly to a public charity; it satisfies the RMD and is tax-free. Use up your FSAs. If you have a medical FSA or dependent care FSA at work, use up your 2016 contributions. For a medical FSA, check whether you have a grace period or any carryover. Check eligibility for making a contribution to a health savings account. As long as you're covered by a highdeductible health plan for all of December (and continue in such plan), you can make a full year tax-deductible contribution for 2016; no itemizing is required. Take losses on securities. The stock market is open on December 30. Losses can offset gains and then up to $3,000 of ordinary income; excess losses can be carried over. Watch the wash sale rule. Maximize your retirement savings. Check with your employer about contributing to your company plan (maximum 401(k) contribution is $18,000, or $24,000 if 50 or older). Prepay college tuition for a semester starting in the first three months of 2017. This will allow you to claim an education credit on your 2016 return. Discuss deferred compensation arrangements for yearend bonuses. Lower tax rates in the future can mean big savings. Increase tax payments to cover anticipated taxes. This can be done by asking an employer to take a lump sum from the final paycheck or make/ increase the final estimated tax payment in January. "Do as many of these steps as you can right now," urges Weltman. "When April 15th rolls around—and it will be here before you know it—you'll be glad you took the initiative." Barbara Weltman, J.K. Lasser's spokesperson, is an experienced media professional, ready to lend her expertise to print, online, and broadcast segments and is available for interviews and year-end tax questions. ANNE DONNELL Psychic Medium
Psychic Medium Demonstration Those looking to experience and/or witness the process of connecting to the “Other Side are invited to attend Anne’s Monthly Demonstration. Each gathering will hold the intention of connecting with our loved ones that have passed over, as well as connecting psychically with attendees. *Please note, not everyone attending the demonstration will receive a message. As many know, the energy during a demonstration brings forth different energetic frequencies each time and no two demonstrations are ever the same.

It’s common for people to think about putting their mark on the world and leaving it a better place than when they arrived. But in many cases people fail to put those thoughts into action – possibly because they’re hesitant to step outside their comfort zones. “Too often we’re taught to be fearful and that hampers the actions we take and the decisions we make, says John C. Neyland, author of How to Live the Life You’ve Yet to Dream. “We need to be taught to be courageous. He experienced his own challenges growing up, suffering the wrath of an abusive father and trying to overcome obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) that left him burdened by stress. “I know what it’s like to need help and not have it, Neyland says. “But that has given me the impetus to want to help and make a difference in the lives of others – whether those others are family members or strangers. And there’s no time like the present to begin, he says. As people make their resolutions for the New Year, he suggests a good place to start for having a positive impact on family and others is to vow to:
• Be the kind of spouse you would like to have. Neyland grew up watching his father abuse his mother and he vowed things would be different for him. “If I accomplish every goal I have in life but if I don’t treat my wife the way I should, then for me my life would have no purpose,â€? Neyland says. He suggests an unusual benchmark – eulogies – for setting the standard for how you treat your spouse. People usually speak with great respect of the deceased in eulogies, Neyland says, but why wait until then to show someone how much you honor them? “Why not treat your loved ones as if you honor them every day?â€? • Be the kind of parent you would have liked to have had. Think back on your childhood and consider what your parents did right and what they did wrong. You can learn from both. Everyone understands the value of loving parents who invest time in their children and set a good example. “There have been times I haven’t measured up,â€? Neyland says, “but I truly give it my all.â€? • Enable others to have a life they otherwise would not See LIFE page 17...

NORTH BERWICK Noble Adult & Community Education is pleased to congratulate the six graduates of the Fall 2016 Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.) Program. On Thursday, December 15, this year's cohort celebrated their achievement at an evening graduation ceremony with about 35 family and friends. The 180-hour program consists of a 90 hours of class theory, 20 hours of skills lab, 70 hours of clinical practice, and a state certification exam. Brenda Gagne, the Director of Noble Adult & Community Education, and Alison Bourn, R.N. the C.N.A. Program Instructor, recognized the six graduates for their commitment to the program. We are proud to
say that all of our students gained employment in the healthcare field. Brenda and Alison encouraged the graduates to continue their healthcare education and training, enhance their skills and increase their value to future employers. The graduation ceremony concluded after the presentation of certificates and C.N.A. pins. A reception followed the graduation ceremony where everyone enjoyed cake and punch. The C.N.A. Program trains healthcare professionals for exciting careers in the healthcare industry. The certificate is evidence to employers of completion of the required training and an employee’s willingness to avail themselves to career development opportunities. Noble
Adult & Community Education partners with Varney Crossing Nursing Care Center to provide clinical practice for our C.N.A. students, as an example of one of these partnership programs. Noble Adult & Community Education offers the C.N.A. program throughout the year. The next course will start Tuesday, January 31. Interviews will be conducted January 9-19. Students must provide proof of high school completion or be a senior in good standing, a driver’s license and social security card, two letters of recommendation, and a reading level of at least 9th grade. For more information about the C.N.A. Program: www.noble.maineadulted.org or call Karen Forni, C.N.A. Program Coordinator at 207676-3223.

Wedding Celebrated at Village Gazebo at Christmas ELIOT The wedding of Lisa O'Connor and James (Jim) Kroening took place on December 9 at 6 p.m. in Eliot. The ceremony took place under the village Gazebo by the decorated Christmas tree. It was perhaps the coldest night of the new winter season but hearts were warmed as Lisa and Jim repeated their vows as led by their officiant, Ms. Andrea Rohde. In attendance were Judy and Todd Luttio of Black River Falls, Wisconsin, Jason Basden and Tim Greer of Charlotte, North Carolina and Ted and Joan Feldmeirer of Eliot. Lisa and Jim met one year ago at a local restaurant in the seacoast area. After the winter nuptials, the wedding party progressed to the Wentworth By the Sea for
dinner at the Salt Restaurant. Lisa and Jim left the next day for their honeymoon in Cancun,
Mexico. The new Mr. and Mrs. Kroening reside in Eliot. (Jill Brady Photography)

Pushing Back the Dust of our Pasts to Enjoy and Survive our Future Submitted by Jim Fabiano of York This is the time of year everyone seems to slow down. For the past few months all we’ve thought about was preparing for Thanksgiving Dinner and getting out to the shopping areas in order to show how much you love someone by how much you spend on them. The Christmas rush is over, the New Years Eve celebration is a hangover you'll want to forget, and all you have left is figure out where you are heading into the future before it happens. The election of 2016 seems to have lasted forever. In fact, it feels as though it is still going on. Our nation is split in two with political ideologies having little conversation in order to lead our nation to a better place. The weather cooperated this year (so far) by laying down a thick white blanket of snow displaying a kind of clean slate. This new whiteboard has the tendency to sweep away the dust THANK YOU ST. JUDE: May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world now and forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, helper of the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer 9 times a day, by the 8th day your prayers will be answered. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised and done.
of the past. I have a favorite saying that fits perfectly during this time of reflection. I am in no way taking credit for it and have no concept as to where I picked it up. But, it fits and it always goes to the front of my mind during this time of year that defines new. The saying starts out by stating “the past is history.” This seems like a simplistic statement but it becomes relevant when you look back and regret some of things you did in the past. Everyone knows you can’t change the past and even if you could you should be wary of what would take its place. This year was a tough year for regrets. I am aggravated with the fact I did not tell my wife the truth all the time. Now I am not saying I did anything appalling or horrific but sometimes little things have a tendency to become big things if you don’t pay attention. I also regret I felt hate during the election of 2016. Hate is such useless emotion that always ends in regret. I regret certain comments I made to my colleagues, friends, and students. I didn’t make these remarks maliciously but after they left my mouth it was obvious they never traveled

From noon to 1 p.m. the members also attended the regular December chapter meeting and were given a lovely luncheon by the staff. At 1 p.m. the program began and the members were happy to present the residents with 398 pairs of both women's and men's socks. They were donated by chapter members and were decorated with red ribbons and handmade gift tags made by local chapter members. Earlier in the month, chapter members reached out to Line Elementary School in Newfield, Maine as a community project to involve the students. They spent the afternoon with them putting tags and ribbons on the socks donated by the students. USDA Awards $6 Million to Road Infrastructure and Fish Habitat WASHINGTON, DC U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King and Congressman Bruce Poliquin shared a recent announcement that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is awarding a $6 million grant to a Maine partnership led by the Nature Conservancy that will help private forestland owners reduce the impacts that flooding has on road networks and restore more than 250 miles of fish habitat in northern and eastern Maine. Senators Collins and King and Congressman Poliquin wrote a joint letter of support for the initiative, called the Maine Aquatic Connectivity Restoration Project, in September. “By restoring and reconnecting waterways and improving roads and bridges, this project will help improve fish habitats and enhance the forest economy in northern and eastern Maine,” said Senator Collins. “I commend The Nature Conservancy for partnering with local landowners and others on this
collaborative effort that will help protect our environment, improve fishing, and benefit communities throughout the region.” “This project represents the very best of Maine – environmental stewardship combined with economic growth and driven by innovative collaboration – all of which once again shows that, in Maine, preserving our environment and building our economy can go hand-in-hand,” Senator King said. “I commend the Nature Conservancy for bringing this group together with the shared goal of improving fish habitats while also strengthening our forest roadway infrastructure, and appreciate the significant investment in Maine’s future from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.” “Our State’s fisheries and coastal habitats are treasures and key parts of Maine’s identity, providing for thousands of jobs through tourism, harvesting and other critical industries,” said
pasts you have the older you feel. Does anyone ever remember growing old? You live your life and get busy to the point you forget about time. Then all of a sudden something happens forcing you to slow down and think about the days of your life when you were too busy to pay attention. In other words, the present becomes the past before you give yourself time to enjoy it. So, here I sit in my office enjoying what I consider one of my favorite days. I look out my window and watch snow and ice mix in the air only to fall to the ground in what looks like an ocean of white gelatin. One of my favorite sayings continues by stating “the past is history” by reminding all who dare to think the future is a mystery. Thinking back to where I was a year before I realize I had never had total control over what my future would be. Of course now that my future evolved into my past I wonder
what happened to my present. I should write down what I think I’ll be doing a year from now but that seems dangerous because if I wrote it down I would be forced to view my own failings in trying to do what I thought I would do. Sure I would love to be selling my new book, have my students become successes, have my wife continue to become more beautiful than I thought anything could be, and maybe even find a way to become all that I dreamed I would be. Before I concentrate on the mystery of my future I remember the last part of my favorite saying. In its entirety it states, “The past is history, the future is a mystery, and there is a reason they call today a present.” Jim Fabiano is a teacher and writer living in York, and was awarded by Maine Publisher's Association Best weekly column award for 2004. ...FUTURE from page 18 through my brain. Looking down at my forever-growing gut I remember another regret. Last year, I promised myself I would go on an exercise regiment. I did well for the first few months but found more excuses during the year as to why I would miss a certain day on the treadmill or why I wouldn’t do quite so many sit-ups in the morning. All this did was erode what I was trying to do in the first place that was to live a bit longer and hopefully a bit better. Other then these few transgressions I think I’ve lived a good life. I wish I wrote better and read more. I wish I could have answered more of my student’s questions about today’s technology and where it is taking us. I wish I had fought harder defending political and social values I know are right. I wish I had more courage to do so. I wonder if I’m the only one who thinks about the concept of growing old. The more
