Project Introduction Description/Interpretation
Create a piece of footwear for an activity or sport. Both of the words sport and
activity are used loosely in this context, in that the footwear can be created to fit an imaginary or obscure task. An additional objective for the production of tis piece of footwear would be to incorporate recycled materials in its construction.
Personal Goals • Contemplate the addition of technology to map players positions on fields. • Create a lighter shoe specifically for ultimate frisbee • Create a design that reflects sustainability and durability for consistent on the field performance.

Research Materials/Environment
In researching many different athletic shoes, I noticed that there is not an athletic
shoe specific to that of Ultimate Frisbee. Traditionally when individuals play ultimate, they use the soccer cleat. Continuing to use a soccer cleat to play ultimate, seems slightly ridiculous considering how a soccer cleat is constructed. A soccer cleat is constructed under the assumption the player will need padding on the top and front portion of their feet because they will be kicking objects on the field. When in reality, Ultimate Players need added ankle support and light weight shoe with a significant part of the shoe dedicated to spikes for efficient pivoting and cutting. In researching materials to use for the cleat I wanted to focus on the traits which would particularly benefit ultimate players. When researching materials for this project the key elements that I wanted to keep in mind. First an ultimate frisbee cleat does need to be built for kicking an object and therefore does need to be restricted to cushioning the entire foot in the same manner as a soccer or football cleat. Second, make it light at adaptive through combining materials that reacts to weather and don't hinder performance. Third make it fun, play up the traditional aspects that make frisbee more fun such as the rain in the mud and allow the shoe to react and adapt to those environments quickly.

To gain a better understanding of consistent issues that plague ultimate frisbee players, I
contacted my high school ultimate frisbee coach for feedback on issues which he faces with his cleats for this sport. My teacher described issues which he consistently encountered with his Puma Konstrukt Soccer Cleat. One of the consistent issues that occurred was the excessive wearing of the toe region on his pivot foot due to the pivoting on the field. He also discussed how players choose cleats based on the position they played and the required ankle support for that position. Additionally he noted that it may be advantageous for a frisbee cleat to have the cleats continue on from the bottom to the front of the shoe since there is no need in kicking objects. Additionally, I researched out to other ultimate frisbee forum members and have yet to gain feedback from them.

Cleat Research In order to further my understanding of current cleats which are used for Ultimate, I traveled to Sports Basement to compare and contrast the current soccer and football cleats on the market. My findings after analyzing the cleats shown above was that if the shoe was light, it was made of a hard, uncomfortable material. If the cleat was heavy, it was because there was so much padding it was suffocating your foot. And overall, they all seemed to sabotage any sense of good arch support. So, I think this points me in the right direction.

Concepts and Development First Thoughts Initially, I was struck by two design concepts for this project. First, the creation of a cleat which was actually designed for ultimate frisbee. Secondly, in lieu of the recent football referee discrepancies, creating a football cleat which uses live player feedback and interacts with its environment to increase the accuracy of referee calls. This would allow for real time data collection of player field positioning, as well as, data collection of plays and provide players with live performance statistics. One could also incorporate additional field equipment, such as, markers along the line of scrimmage and end zones to further enhance the recorded movements of players o n the field, which then could be reconstructed as 3D models for replays and player analytics.
Although I find the second concept intriguing being an interaction designer, I find the creation of product that does not exist more engaging and therefore will be pursuing the creation of the ultimate frisbee cleat. Concept and Development / First Thoughts / Table 04

Schematics Form and Ideation Continuing with the flexible form and individual features of the frisbee cleat, I began to brainstorm as to applicable features for the cleat which is preemptively named the Honey Badger, the ultimate frisbee cleat. • Use magnetic coils to generate electricity through the constant movement of the player • An idea inspired by father who works in education, a shoe reacts by changing colors when wet • A reduction in supportive materials in the front and top of the foot and replacing it with more breathable material. • Cleat teeth which adjust to change in weather conditions by having a hydro phobic base which retracts when it becomes wet • Expansion of cleats on to front of shoe to increase pivoting performance • Contemplate a wider heel to decrease stopping distance required when catching frisbee, so that the heal will act as an anchor • Allow the soul interior mesh and exterior section of the shoe to be easily detachable of each other and to replace parts that are worn out. This will also decrease the efforts in recycling. • Relocate the traditional shoe laces from the top arch of your foot to the sides just in front of your ankle support to distribute the pressure on the top of your foot. • Create a cleat which mimics a beaver tooth and consists of two materials in varying densities to allow the cleat to stay sharp as it is worn.

Color Studies The Honey Badger has significant flexibility in coloration opportunities depending upon the desired team colors. For the flagship model, it would consist of a yellow exoskeleton which would form the honeycomb structure and the indentations of mesh would be black. The sole of the shoe would mimic the top with a black sole and yellow cleats. Concept and Development / Concept Sketches / Table 08 1 2 3 4

Model Making Plans and Process After the creation of sketch models from medium density design clay, the decision was made to construct final models from ten pound environmentally friendly foam. The blocks of which the final model was carved from was 12 x 6 x 6 in size. Through the use of a dremel and various sheets of sandpaper and files, the shoe was sculpted from the foam. To ensure a consistent honey comb pattern, I created a card stock cut out of a hexagon to then trace the pattern on to the shoe for consistency. After a final sanding, the shoe was coated with grey primer and then the white laces were glued on after the paint had dried.

Final Product Product Description The Honey Badger, the first in line of ultimate frisbee cleats, has been designed for the position of cutter. This cleat uses adaptive weather technology to improve player performance in various weather conditions. It contains an exo skeleton to wrap the foot and distribute pressure evenly while having the ankle be continuously supported. The ex skeleton also contributes to its light weight and attractive form factor. The angular positioning of the cleats allow for even weight distribution and reduced wear on the toe region of the shoe while improving the stopping and cutting ability of the player. The self sharpening cleats, which mimic the action of a beavers tooth, in combination of the shoe only be constructed in three parts ensures is sustainability and recyclability of the Honey Badger.

Evaluation of Process Conclusion The creation of the Honey Badger has provided me with a better understanding of my own evolutionary process. The final product demonstrates the goals which I had hoped to achieve, although, I feel a few more iterations could truly make it more interesting. Although initially I was tempted to create an interaction design shoe for football, deciding to go with a new category of product was a more rewarding experience.
In the future, analyzing stress points within players shoes as they are playing, as well as, analyzing body movements and weight distribution and cutting abilities within the shoe would be interesting data to collect. Combining this data with data collected when players use the Honey Badger vs other cleats would be beneficial in tweaking features with the Honey Badger to increase its performance and maneuverability on the field.
