After a chaotic journey, I eventually bump into an unexpected scenery

May, 2013, Fundamental Design, NCTU Instructor : Wen-Yuan,Peng Description: This project mainly discuss the changes between light and shadow. We will develop our three-dimensional design using white paperboard.

[Concept] In 2012, I traveled to visit a international conference hall in Osaka, which was designed by Tadao Ando. However, the hall was not open, since it was holding a conference that day, I tried very hard to find a way to get into that hall, then I was glad to find an air corridor which connected the hallway, until I noticed there was a warning board saying "no entry." I felt frustrated but I noticed that the scenery was very amazing. In this project, I tried to represent the experience of me in that journey.

6

[Transformation]

I felt frustrated since I couldn't enter the hall, but I also noticed that the scenery was so amazing that I decided to take a picture of it.

The scenery impressed me I used triangle and rectangle by the shadows. When the to represent the arched shapes lights enter the space, it make and straight line. two kinds of shadow, arched and straight line shapes;, therefore, I combined curved and straight lines to create a picture.

Considering how to represent the chaotic jour ney and unexpected scenery by using lights and shadows, I kept the patterns I want, and use those patterns to develop the next model.

model 1 Based on the geometric drawing ,I sketched lines on white paperboard and made a embossment by cutting and folding those lines.

8

model 3 Based on model 2, I connected those triangles to make a three-dimensional volume, simplified model 2, enhancing the two-sided geometric figures.

model 4 The effect of light that penetrated from triangle figures fascinated me; therefore, I remained this effect and developed my next model, by creating a space that’s full of chaotic lights and unable to see the end of the road to represent "chaotic journey".

model 5 Reserves arches, and I arranged those arches from high to low, creating those shadows to represent "chaotic journey."

9

[Construction] Reserved these arches to be the prime element, then overlapped and rotated it with different sizes. Imagining a person attracted to light which is from this building, the person enters, gets lost and after chaotic journey, eventually bumps into an unexpected scenery. I tried 3 ways to oprate it. I tried to represent the experience of this explorer.

[Scenario]

Deciding to represent the experience of my journey reminds me a admiring explorer- Ibn Battua, the great Arab traveler.

Ibn Battua Abu ‘Abdallan ibn Battua has been right celebrated as the greatest traveler of prempdern times. He was born into a family of Muslim legal scholars inTangier, Morocco, in 1304 during the era of the Marinid dynasty. He studied law as a young man and in 1325 left his native town to make pilgrimage, or hajj, to the sacred city of Mecca in Arabia. He took a year and a half to reach his destination, visiting North Africa, Egypt, Palestine, and Syria along the way. After completing his first hajj in1326, he toured embarked upon a sea voyage that took him down the eastern coast of Afica as far south as regin of modern Tanzania. On his return voyage he visited Oman and Persian Gulf and returned to Mecca again by the overland route across central Arabia. In 1330 (or 1332) he ventured to go to India to seek employment in the government of the Sultanate of Delhi. Rather than taking the normal ocean route across the Arabian Sea to the Syria to Asia Minor. After touring that region, he crossed the Black Sea to the plains of West Central Asia. He then, owning to fortuitous circumstances, made a westward detour to visit Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire, in the company of Turkish princess. Returning to the Asian steppers, he traveled eastward through Transoxiana, Khurasan, and Afghanistan, arriving at the banls of the Indus River in September 1333 (or1335). He spent eight years in India, most of that time occupying a post as a qadi, or juge, in the goverment of Muhammad Tughluq, Sulatan of Delhi. In 1341 the king appointed him to lead Tughluq, Sultan of Delhi. In 1341 THE king appointed him to lead a diplomatic mission to the court of the Mongol emperor of China. The expedition ended disastrously in shipwreck off the southwestern coast of India, leaving Ibn Battuta without employment or resources. For a little more than two years he traveled about Southern India, Ceylon, and the Meldive Islands, Where he served for about eight months as a qadi under the local Muslim dynasty. Then, despite the failure of his ambassadorial mission, he resolved in 1345 to go to China on his own. Traveling by sea, he 16

visited Bengal, the coast of Burma, and the island of Sumatra, then continued on to Canton. THE extent of HIS visit to China is uncertain but was probably limited to the southern coastal region. In 1346-47 he returned to Mecca by way of South India, the Persian Gulf, Syria, and Egypt. After performing the ceremonied of the hajj one last time, he set a course for home. Traveling by both land and sea, he arrived in Fez, the the a Moroccan provincial town. He died in 1368. capital of Morocco, Late in 1349. The following year he made a brief trip across the Strait of Gibaltar to the Muslim kindom of Granada. Then, in 1353, he Written in the conventional literary style if the time, Ibn Battuta’s Rihla undertook his final adventure, a journey by camel caravan across Sudan of the is a comprehensive survey of the personalities, places, governments, customs, Eastern Hemisphere, visited territories equivalent to about 44 modern countries, and curiosities of the Muslim world in the dramatic oersonal adventure. In and put behind him a total distance of appro ximately 73,000 miles. the four centuries after Ibn Battuta’s death, the Rihla circulated, mostly in copied manuscript abridgments of Ibn Juzazzy’s original text, among people Early in 1356 Sultan Abu ’ Inan, the Marinid ruker of Morocco, of learning in North Africa, West Africa, Egypt, and perhaps other Muslim commissioned Ibn Juzayy, a young literary scholar of Andalusian origin, to record lands where Arabic was read. Ibn Battuta and Ibn Juzayy collaborates foe about two years to compose their work, the longest and in terms of its subject matter the most complex rihla to come out of North Afria in the medieval age. His royal charged completed, Ibn Battuta retired to Judicial post in 17

[Site]

[Observation]

Touliu City, Yunlin County, National Yunlin Uniersity of Science and Technology.

For me, it seems there is a strength to attract people revolve in and out of the sports field. I observed the activities related to the changing of weather and time on sports ground.

I chose sports field to be my site and observed runners in this place, The reason is because I love jogging, and spend one hour on the sports field almost everyday.

Starry Messenger Oct, 2012, Fundamental Design, NCTU Instructor : Wei-Tseng Description: In this project,we will pick up a green pepper or potato, observe the space inside by cutting it with 3 cuts; eventually, we will create a personal living space.

34

35

[Cut] I observed the inner structure of the green pepper, think how to reveal the green pepper to the best by cutting with 3 cuts.

[Choose]

1st cutting, reveal the inner of stem. Sketch, present the light and shade of the green pepper section.

I chose a cur ved, dynamic green pepper.

2nd cutting, reveal the section of curved portion.

Rubbing, present the dark and light of green pepper section.

3rd cutting, reveal the section of extremity

36

37

[Magnify and change its moderation]

[ Abstraction]

Using 3-points to decide how to use 1 plane to describe the rugged appearance of green pepper.

I decided to erect the skeleton, not just because I like the space, but also I intend to create a space with more than two floors.

Imagining it is a architectural space, then magnify the skeleton to scale 1:20, and it will be permitted to push/pull 3 points to modle a space better or completed.

I pushed a point to model the space to be more varied. 38

39

[Function]

[Scenario]

This living space should contain four functions: bedroom, living room, and bathroom. We can set up a function according to the user.

After erecting the skeleton, set up this space to be a tower, then I associate this with a picture book -Starry essenger which I read when I am a child, described Galileo Galilei's life. At the end of the story, Galileo was sentenced to life imprisonment in a Tower. That scene recurred to me.

40

Ptolemy's Geocentric Theory

According the user - Galileo , I set up an astronomical observatory station for him.

Copernicus' heliocentric theory

41

[Skin]

I chose three kinds of material: transparent, translucent ,and opaque material. I decided the form of skin by function, lighting effects and perception of user,.

According the function and atmosphere that I wanted to create, I decided the form of skin, includes transparency/hardness of skin, and the relation of skin and skeleton.

3F : The 3rd floor is an outdoor space, did not paste skins.

2F: placed bathroom on the left side, and bedroom on the right right, combined privacy and openness, user can see stars while resting.

42

Designed 1st floor to be more private, and added space for stairs.

Placed stairs accordingto my function and the scenario.
