CANDY CAMPUS - BROADWAY JUNCTION STATION OFFICE CAMPUS
12 Weeks Master 1st year studio, Feb. 2018 - May. 2018 Site: New York , Brooklyn, United States Selected Work in University of Virginia Published Work in NEXT CITIES: NEXT NEW YORK We noticed that there was an astonishing number of adults without a high school education. We also learned about the history of manufacturing work that took place and is still taking place around the site. We also learned about the five train lines that intersection and stop at Broadway Junction – where there are coming from and where they are going. We learned about the high number of passengers that move through our site daily. The city of New York has been wanting to move their Human Resources Administration offices to Broadway Junction. We also read about the high rent cost in downtown Brooklyn, especially compared to costs at and around our site. Due to the low rent cost, the need for jobs at Broadway Junction and the easily transportation access, we decided to bring 50,000m2 of office to the site and rethink about the "office space". Plus programs are just like candys and were inserted into every building in this block.
NEW OFFICE CAMPUS IN BROOKLYN According to the research, the office area in Manhattan is in short supply in this decade. More and more companies cast their attention on Brooklyn area. Unfortunately, the rent price in downtown Brooklyn booms in these years as well. The site, as a traffic junction, is convenient enough to be a new large office campus.
OFFICE SPATIAL PATTERN Traditional office buildings tend to place public space and functions at the bottom of the building. Comparing to a traditional pattern, this project explores the different possibilities of space composition.
OPEN SPACE & RAILWAY This diagram shows the open space around the site, including the park, playground, and parking lot. Some interesting relationship is found between railways and open spaces.
CITY GRID This area is divided into three parts by two main city roads. The site is located at the junction of different city grids.
EDUCATION MAPPING With few highly educated people in the area, education institution such as community schools, part-time school, and adult college is one of the right choices.
COLLAGE The northern side and the southern side of the site has totally different space conditions and experiment.

Due to the low rent cost, the need for jobs at Broadway Junction and the easily transportation access, we decided to bring 50,000m2 of office to the site. Because it is such large amount of office space, we decided to re-think office space and the working environment in this square footage. Designers have been trying to make offices great again by designing open f loor plans and creating spaces that encourage collaboration. However, we are thinking of incorporating “candy programs” throughout the offices. These “candies” improve office moral and encourage continuing education. At the ground level, the campus is completely open to the public. This is just one part of the candy program. It grows to the second level, which is a series of connecting elevated platforms. The platforms or bridges connect from certain buildings and first f loor rooftops. It grows with the infrastructure.

OFFICE PLUS PROGRAM This is a workshop space for my office. It changes based on what activities we have going on per month.
LOCAL PLUS PROGRAM I take the subway from Broadway Junction to meet with friends anywhere in the city!
SECTION A 1:200
It is so nice to sit in shade while we wait for our friends coming from the subway. The view is cool too!
We use natural ventilation when the weather is nice. The offset facade allows us to do so without excess light.
I am an artist and this is my studio. I often have shows in the gallery below with local students.
As a local student studying art, I love coming here to work after school.
I like to hang out here on the weekends. I love indoor gardens! The plants are so beautiful.

SECTION WITH CANDIES People in the nearby neighborhood can use The little candy spaces inserted into every office building will provide more diverse office life. The candy on the second floor can be shared with the residence of the local community, such as galleries, restaurants, and etc. The candies above can be only used by company staffs inside the building. For this reason, the candies on the upper floor are more private space such as lab, VR rooms and so on.
OASIS - A FUTURE OASIS MAKING PEOPLE CLOSER TO NATURE
12 Weeks Master 2nd year studio, Feb. 2019 - May. 2019 Site: Santa Monica , LA , United States Selected Work in University of Virginia In the very near future, with the development of computer and digital technology, the tight between people and digital device will become stronger and stronger. Monitors, VR glasses, and the cellphone will dominate human's life at that time. On the other hand, people will meet the problem that they will not have insufficient contact with nature. Feelings, such as touch, smell, hearing, humidity, temperature, cannot be acquired by all forms of computers. However, the requirement of these feeling is essential for people. Because of the excellent weather in Los Angeles, California, this project has the opportunity to blur the boundary between exterior and interior, and free people from similar architecture cages. A coherent circulation will string the large open space and the small box related to open space together. Meanwhile, The project also provides different circulations to the people with relaxing and researching needs.

FREE SPACE - CITY PARK AND SOUND FORUM DESIGN & SOUND STUDY
12 Weeks Master 1st year studio, Sep. 2017 - Dec. 2017 Site: Charlottesville , VA, United States Exhibition Works of Martin Luther King Exhibition in Charlottesville Selected Work in University of Virginia
I redesigned Emancipation Park where the riot took place to convey the history as well as everything it brought through architecture and audio devices. I changed the unoccupied place where sculpture was moved away into a “void” that can be seen and heard. People look up and listen to the history. Then, they come to an absolutely quiet place to think about what is the real “Emancipation”.

lee’s statue
The Emancipation park is a small hill, and the old Lee’s statue was on the top of the hill. People can only see it by looking up. This upper and lower relationship is something needs to be broken.
emptyness
After moving the Lee’s statue, the emptyness was born. The emptyness does not means nothing, it means a lot.
sounds of removing statue
To let visitors notice that there was something here before, a frosted glass box was built. Speakers around it play the sound of moving statue( such as wraping and moving it) to indicate the past statue and the void now.
A completly silent basement is built under the frosted glass box and the roof is glass too. People can feel the light above it but can not hear anything, It is a good place to think about Emancipation.

The space between the glass wall and concrete wall can store rainwater or fallen leaves, which enable this architecture to have a facade can be decided by weather and season.
This project is trying to convey the respective toward history. When audiences are under the historical relic, they will respect history and look upon history naturally. This project wants to let them remember the accident the sculpture brought in 2017's summer and rouse their introspection.
THE INTERSECTION - URBAN DESIGN & SUBWAY HUB DESIGN
16 Weeks 5th year studio, Mar. 2017 - Jun. 2017 Site: Hongkou District , Shanghai, China Excellent Graduation Design
In the face of the city gap problem brought by different city function of near blocks, this project used the strategy that insert inter-founction between the olf differnt city funcions to connect the divided city again. The underground hub connects sites and functions in different places and heights together. It plans people’s circulation again. Meanwhile, it keeps connectivity of view, and let people from different places be together here.

SITE The site was divided into two parts by the light rail and high-speed city road. The function of them is different. The north part was a sports block. The professional stadium, Hongkou Stadium was in this block, and it was surrounded by a series of sports and relaxing area( including the park, tourist center, sports schools,etc.). The southern part was a residential block. Markets and hotels surrounded it. The result of function gap was that the peak time of people amount in two parts of the site was different, which led to a waste of city resource.

SECOND GROUND - MUMBAI EAST COAST AREA URBAN DESIGN
12 Weeks Master 2nd year studio, Aug. 2018 - Jan. 2019 Site: Mumbai , India Flood, traffic and land use are three main problems which Mumbai is facing in these decades. To solve these problems, cable car, as a new layer of ground, is inserted to this area.In this project, The cable car ease the traffic pressure in Mumbai. This urban design project presents a new possibility that makes the traditional India street mode 3D. By moving the main street above, which is the new cable car system, the land of the ground level is free to build the canal on it. Flooding problem will be solved by the plants inside and around these canals. The 3D block also happens in a single high-rise building. The street plaza is moved to the center part of a building and combined with the cable car station. Keeping the same relationship between different programs as what they were now, every building is a vertical street block, which solves the housing shortage in Mumbai as well.

BLUE COMMUNITY
8 Weeks 4th year studio , Nov. 2015 - Jan. 2016 Site: Hongkou District , Shanghai, China Group Work , Team Leader The site is the only remaining Waterfront traditional Lilong neighborhood in Shanghai. Compared to reforming this block to a tourist spot, this project retains the original function of the site and keeps the original residents in this block. This project studied the differnet possibility between the river and the city. This kind of new possibility gives Meanwhile, from a city's point of view, this project will bring new residents to this old area and promote the activity of this block , even of the whole Hongkou district.
The site not only located in the center of Shanghai City but also is the only area in Shanghai which have waterside space and Shanghai traditional housing in the meantime. The historical buildings and the sight toward Hongkou River and Huangpu River, which is the largest river in the city area valuable asset of this area.

DIFFERENT POSSIBILITIES Because of the close relationship between land and water, more and more kinds of possibility can be explored in this block. Land can be above the water, surrounded by water, under the water, etc.
WATERSIDE ART COMMUNITY Related to the art college in the adjacent neighborhood, more and more graduates will come to this area and finding an apartment is a significant problem for them. This block is transferred into a gallery community while keeping the facade of Shanghai traditional single-family house. The ground floor will become, and the young artists will live in the upper studio floor. The community art hall in the southern part of the block will give them more opportunities. The art material market on the north side will make their life easier.

THE NEW TASTE OF FLOW - A POP-UP DINER FOR STUDENTS IN UVA
48 Hours Competition , Jan. 2019 Site: Charlottesville , VA, United States AIA Virginia Prize Hornorable Mention In our perspective, eating is considered as consumption of energy. However, eating can also be transformed as a way to generate the development of the mind and body health. In this pop-up design, the foldable and moveable tables become the generator of thoughts and interaction between different cultures. In architecture schools, the diversity of cultures can be embraced during the lunch and dinner time. Everyone can bring their traditional cuisines and share with others. One typical feature of the design is the curio box which concludes all the spice from different countries. This curio box contains our cultures and memories. More importantly, some portable heat pumps are designed to improve outside eating conditions. These heat pumps are supplied by the waste which is produced in this kitchen. The energy can be recycled and reused in a positive way. In term of the space design, we have the flexible waffle design which the ceiling can be pulled from the wall and pop up several waterproof tents. These can be worked as a space divider and a private or public oasis for students. At the same time, the Japanese Byōbu can provide flexibility to students and they can decide whether they will pull down the screen to have more privacy. The landscape design is closely related to our site which is close to the backyard of the school. The small Japanese garden can become a nice rest place for students.
